Fees persuade majority of smart meter holdouts to switch over By Tom Fletcher
BC Hydro’s imposition of manual meter reading fees has persuaded most holdouts to accept a wireless smart meter. BC Hydro imposed a $35 monthly fee starting Dec. 1 for customers who refuse to part with their mechanical electricity meters, after offering the 68,000 customers who still had them the option of accepting the new meter with the radio transmission function on or off. BC Hydro reported the results this week to the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC), which is reviewing the fees. More than 48,000 customers chose the smart meter to avoid the meter reading fee. Another 450 chose the
radio-off meter, which comes with a $100 setup fee and $20 a month starting April 1 to cover costs of collecting readings. Another 6,270 customers chose to keep their mechanical meters, and 13,110 more did not respond to BC Hydro’s letters, so they will have the $35 fee added to their bills until they choose another option. BC Hydro reports that 99 per cent of its customers now have the wireless meter. Most of those have been switched to automated billing, and have their daily electricity use displayed on their online account pages. Claims of health effects from wireless meter transmissions have been rejected by health authorities, and

Arts council workshop takes flight
Local children help save Candy Cane Lane
Due to a sell-out of the workshop in November, instructor Steve Bondy hosted another introduction to origami workshop Saturday 14th December at the Cranbrook and District Arts Council (CDAC). Students came between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. to get to grips with this ancient paper folding art form. People came from as far as Kimberley to participate and create. Gretchen Whetham (pictured with her creations) who attended the class admitted “I am not a creative person so origami appealed to me because there is a huge repertoire of shapes to make and lots of books and websites with instructions. However, unless you know what the various symbols mean, it can be very frustrating to learn on your own. Steve Bondy was very patient and showed us very basic shapes step-by-step. He also showed us a sample of his creations, which has inspired me to practice and sign up for his next workshop”. You can see for yourself one of Steve’s beautiful modular swans in the accompanying photograph. “This is the first workshop I’ve attended at the Arts Council.”, Gretchen said. “Helen (the CDAC administrator), and other volunteers made everyone feel welcome and even provided tea and treats”. Steve’s workshops have been so successful at the arts council that he is already booked in for two intermediate classes for 2014. The first is Saturday 25th January and the second is Saturday 22nd February both between

Just some of the origami creations by instructor Steve Bondy and students from a successful workshop held at the Cranbrook and District Arts Council. 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. For $25 you’ll receive all the materials you require and two hours of professional instruction. This course acts as follow-on from the introductory course, but is also suitable for people with previous origami experience. In this class Steve moves on from the simpler models from the introductory course to more complex models including an angel fish and, at special request of one of his younger students, a dragon! Students taking this class have had nothing but praise for instructor Steve Bondy, as evidenced in the words of Terry Lynn and Gretchen, and confirmed by student and CDAC board member Tessa McGregor “Steve’s creativity and enthusiasm for this ancient art form was infectious. I can’t wait to sign up for his next workshop which will take us to the next level of origami con-

struction”, she goes on to say “I had such fun at the Steve Bondy origami workshop. His step by step, patient instruction of basic shape construction had the participants, many of whom had never done origami before, turning out butterflies, page markers, pianos, Japanese cups, star boxes, and the ultimate challenge, at least for me, cranes. I will be making several page holders to insert into books that I will be giving at Christmas. I can make them from the beautifully patterned paper that Steve supplied, (as)… in addition to the origami treasures that we took away with us from the workshop, we were also supplied with a stack of various origami paper and easy to follow instructions to continue to hone our new found skills at home”. of the Kootenays took the workshop and paid it forward right away by sharing her newfound knowledge. “I took my origami pieces home and immediately spent over an hour having fun with my two granddaughters, teaching them what Steve taught us,” she says. “They were excited to discover how many fun things can be made with one pretty square of paper”. Steve Bondy’s consideration of his students and what they want to learn makes him a wonderful educator. If you’d like to experience one of his classes, please register in advance to avoid disappointment. If you would like to request the introductory workshop run again, you can do so by calling 250-426-4223 or sending an e-quest to cdac@shaw.ca or via the workshop page on the CDAC website at: www.cranbrookanddistrictartscouncil.com

On December 1st the residents of Candy Cane Lane awoke to find their annual Christmas displays had been vandalized overnight. Zoey and her family always have come to Candy Cane Lane each year on Christmas eve and enjoy the lights and decorations. When 7 year old Zoey heard what had happened she felt sad and decided that her Christmas wish this year was to “fix Candy Cane Lane after the people had wrecked it”. Zoey took $30 of her own money and then challenged her older brother William to match it which he did, their parents Adam and Ramona then matched the kids
donations. Zoey’s Mom who is at Shivers in in Western Financial Place also donated $1 from bags of popcorn sold on December 13th and 14th, then David the Manager at the superstore added a $50 gift card to their cause. The kids then purchased a number of decorations including extension cords and brought them to us. When they were dropping off the items Zoey’s mom remarked to my wife that while she and her family were doing this Zoey said she felt all warm inside, funny after this generous and amazing act we feel kind of warm inside too! On Monday night after I got home from work I wrote out a little explanation about this wonderful act, attached
it to the various items and then got to play Santa by going to each of the neighbours on our street. I had to tell them to read the note as It was very hard to explain without becoming quite emotional. The items purchased now have added at least one new and very special decoration to every display on the street. I would also like to thank Mary who lives across from the hospital for finding the pile of decorations thrown over the fence at the golf course and then taking the initiative to find out where they had come from and then trying to get them back to the original owners. Yes Santa Claus the spirit of the season alive and well in Cranbrook, even more so on Candy Cane Lane and two rotten Grinches in a little pickup truck will not change that one bit. Merry Christmas!
Christmas is for children Submitted
Saint Aidan Orthodox Church, Cranbrook, is pleased to welcome Fr. Andrew Applegate and his wife Sonia to our community. Fr. Andrew is from Calgary and prior to becoming a priest worked for Canmark, a roofing company. He and his wife have one son and two grandchildren who live in Colorado Springs. In the rush of preparing for the Christmas holidays, we hear often that Christmas is just for children. In a recently published book Meditations for Advent: Preparing for Christ’s birth, Fr. Vassilios Papavassiliow, writes; “Every year as Christmas approaches, we hear a great deal made about the meaning of Christmas, in a society that persistently is trying to shake off its Christian identity.
Shannon Stewart CirCULAtioN
During such a debate about the meaning of Christmas, one particular comment struck me, Christmas is a feast for children. Although the person who made this comment intended for it to be taken in a negative sense, I found surprised though to be agreeing with him. Christ said become as little children. What do children have that we adults are missing. First of all they have a capacity for wonder and innocent joy, which in adults is tainted by sinfulness and cynicism. Secondly they are capable of complete trust that ends up being choked by the thorns of adulthood and thirdly they possess absolute humility. These childlike characteristics of wonder, joy, faith and humility should be our response to the nativity. Christ comes to be born not in a haughty palace decked with jewels and

precious stones but a humble manger. So too He will not enter the hearts of the proud but only in those who are humble and poor in spirit. Christmas is indeed a feast for children. Only when we become as children will we be able to truly rejoice in the wonder of Christmas, the eternal and almighty God coming to us as a defenceless and vulnerable baby. It is the mystery by which we should be humbled. It is the strange wonder in which we should rejoice as children do.” Saint Aidan’s parish invites you to join us in celebrating Christ Jesus’s birthday with joy and wonder. Nativity services are planned for December 24th, including a Candlelight Carol Sing and Nativity Readings at 11 p.m. and a Midnight Divine Liturgy Service.

Recycling Tips That’s a Wrap
Paper based wrapping paper can be recycled in any of the yellow bins in the East Kootenay and in the curbside recycling programs in Fernie and Invermere. From cards and envelopes to wrapping and tissue paper, please recycle as much as possible.
Recyclable: ✓ Paper based gift wrap ✓ Cards ✓Envelopes ✓ Gift tags ✓ Tissue paper ✓ Cardboard boxes ✓ Brown shipping/packaging paper
Not Recyclable ✕ Foil based wrapping paper ✕ Envelopes or gift tags with foil lining ✕ Bows and Ribbons
If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks.
To find the holiday hours at RDEK transfer stations and landfills, visit
www.rdek.bc.ca
Recycling 101 The yellow bins in the RDEK and curbside programs in Fernie and Invermere take the following: ✓ Mixed paper – including Christmas cards and envelopes (as long as they’re not foil) ✓ Aluminum and tin cans – please rinse well! No aluminum foil, pie plates, etc. Only cans are accepted ✓ Cardboard – all types; boxes must be flattened. Cardboard covered with wax, foil or soiled with grease or food waste cannot be recycled ✓ Plastics – Grocery bags (garbage must be removed from grocery bags) and plastics #1 - #6 (except Styrofoam)
Plastics NOT accepted:
✕ Styrofoam (even though it's marked as a #6) ✕ Unmarked plastics – if it doesn’t have a number on it, it can’t go in the bin. Often the lids are made out of different plastics than the containers, so you have to check carefully ✕ #7 plastics
What You Need to Know About Glass
No Styrofoam
Styrofoam is NOT recyclable in the East Kootenay, even though it is a type of #6. If it can't be reused, it's garbage.
Foiled Again
Please Keep it Clean Our yellow recycling bins are often on private property and it is so important that we keep them clean. Please put all recyclables in the bin. Over the holidays, the bins see a huge increase in volume. While our contactor will be working hard to empty the bins more frequently, sometimes they will be full. If you encounter a full bin, please look for another bin in the area or come back. Never leave recyclables on or around the bins. Thank you for helping us keep our recycling areas clean!
Cranbrook: • Cranbrook Photo • Staples • The Source (in Tamarack Centre) • Kootenay Communications Kimberley: • Kimberley City Hall
For details, visit electrorecycle.ca
These containers must be well rinsed with lids removed.
Metal lids cannot be recycled in the yellow bins. Please make sure you remove the lids before putting glass containers in the recycling bin. Metal lids can be recycled for free at Columbia Recycle in Marysville.
Both alkaline and rechargeable batteries are recyclable. Drop off locations include:
The following items can be dropped off FREE OF CHARGE for recycling: ✓Computers – desktop and laptops ✓Monitors ✓Keyboards and Computer ✓Mice ✓Printers ✓Televisions ✓Fax Machines ✓Scanners ✓DVD and VHS players ✓Stereos and MP3 docking stations ✓Radios ✓Discman, Walkman, MP3 players ✓Earphones ✓Microphones ✓Speakers ✓Cable, satellite and PVR boxes ✓Vehicle audio and video systems
On December 25th alone, over 30 million bags of garbage will be thrown out of Canadian households.
Batteries Included
Electronics recycling depots are located at the Cranbrook, Invermere and Fernie Bottle Depots. These depots are for small volumes only.
Products are divided into categories including: kitchen countertop, time measurement, weight measurement, garment care, air treatment, floor care and personal care.
That means only container glass that holds food and beverages. Some examples include: ✓ Jam jars ✓ Pickle jars ✓ Cheez whiz jars ✓ Olive oil jars ✓ Iced tea or wine bottles
Flip Your Lid!
Electronics are often a hot holiday gift item. Old electronics that are still in good working condition can be taken to an RDEK Reuse Centre; however, if they’re no longer working, they may be able to be recycled.
The Cranbrook and Fernie Depots (not Invermere) also accept more than 120 small electrical appliances, ranging in size from electric toothbrushes to countertop microwave ovens.
The glass recycling bins in the East Kootenay are for container glass ONLY.
The following are NOT accepted in the glass bins: ✕ Dishes of any kind (clear drinking glasses, pyrex dishes, corel ware, pottery, plates, etc). No dishes! ✕ Shower doors, windshields ✕ Lightbulbs ✕ Picture frame glass ✕ Glass trinkets (like candlestick holders and tree decorations)
Electronics Recycling Expands

Tin pie plates and foil roasting pans cannot be recycled. Consider non-disposable options or rinse & reuse them.
Fluorescent Light Recycling The LightRecycle program accepts compact fluorescent and tube fluorescent light bulbs free of charge. The recycling program is for residentially generated lights only. There are currently three LightRecycle Depots in the East Kootenay: Cranbrook Home Hardware, 1901 McPhee Road Skyway Distributors, 304 Slater Road NW Fernie Home Building Centre, 300 Manitou Road
Elk Valley: • City of Fernie • Fernie Aquatic Centre Columbia Valley: • Selkirk TV & Appliance, Invermere
Reuse Comes Before Recycle Over the holidays many people will receive gifts that will replace perfectly good older items. Instead of throwing good items away, please consider giving them away so they can be reused. There are Reuse Centres at the Cranbrook, Kimberley, Elkford, Fernie and Sparwood Transfer Stations and Columbia Valley Landfill. The Reuse Centres accept household items in good working condition.

Everything in the Reuse Centres is available at no cost. Some examples of items that are accepted in the Reuse Centres include: ✓ Chairs ✓ Pictures Televisions ✓ ✓ Small dishes ✓Light fixtures ✓ Tools Items that cannot be accepted include large appliances, tires, mattresses, automotive parts, scrap metal, wood and clothing.

OBITUARY R.J. (Rod) Watier March 1941-Dec. 2013 It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of R.J. (Rod) Watier. He died of cancer on December 10, 2013 in East Kootenay Regional Hospital. R.J. had a life long passion for music. From playing in bands as a young man to customizing his own sound system in his current home. He also laughingly called himself "Scooter Trash on a Harley" for many years. All who knew him heard the stories about his years living in Whitehorse. He had an undying love for the Yukon. R.J. married Kate in 2003. These were the most content years of his life. He was a proud member of the Teamsters Union and worked numerous pipe line jobs. In later years he spent long hours customizing trucks, meticulous in the details. R.J. had a restless spirit, always wanting to know what was around the next bend of the highway or what's on the other side of the mountain. His journey is done now, rest in peace old friend. R.J. is survived by his wife Kate of Cranbrook, family in Saskatchewan and more friends than he knew he had.

'Tis the Season
There is good evidence that moderate alcohol (one drink a day) can be healthy, helping to protect your heart, improve circulation and reduce the risk of diabetes and gallstones. It is generally accepted that, at most, one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men is healthy. On the flip side, alcohol can cause harm if abused, including causing weight gain. Consuming alcohol actually turns off your body’s ability to burn fat from your last meal and preferentially stores fat on your belly. There are ways, however, that you can drink moderately and stay slim. Top of the list is to always eat when you have a drink. Alcohol is high in carbohydrate and a night of drinking can cause your blood sugar to skyrocket then plummet, causing you to feel hungry and likely end up at the bottom of a bag of chips or tub of ice cream. Eating protein along with healthy fats like nuts and seeds or avocado and some fiber (from vegetables) will balance out the carbohydrates from
the alcohol and stabilize your blood sugar. Simple drinks like wine, beer and spirits, vodka and gin in particular, are low calorie compared to drinks with pop, juice or liqueurs. The sweeter and more syrupy the drink, the more hungry it will likely make you feel and the more empty calories it will have. If you have several drinks a day, your body has to metabolize hundreds of calories before it can get back to burning fat from food, possibly leading to unwanted weight gain. To make matters worse, being tipsy does nothing for making good dietary choices and you are more likely to order the plate of nachos that you will still be working off next week. Alcohol is also a diuretic and you might confuse hunger for dehydration. So, be sure to drink water and keep yourself well hydrated, you will feel better for it at the time and in the morning. At this time of year it is particularly important to be conscious about what, and how much, you drink.

‘Twas the night before Christmas - the children were dreaming Of a Ford in their future-smart, swanky and gleaming; And Mother and I grinned, for we knew That this wonderful dream was about to come true. Then out in the driveway wheels crunched on the snow And the ford dealer gave us a cheery “Hello” He wasn’t the Santa Claus type - he appeared Without any reindeer, a pack, or a beard, But when he drove up in that elegant Ford You bet he was Santa, in person, to us. “Merry Christmas,” he said, with a smile that was pleasant, “The Ford in your future is now in your present.”

Santa looking to swap outdated ride for super economy sleigh NORTH POLE - Driveway can exclusively reveal that Santa Claus has been visiting local dealerships kicking tires—ahem, rails—in his search for a new ride. Ever conscious of the increasing cost of gas and effect his multi-million-kilometre Christmas flight has on the environment, Santa seems to have opted for 2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon for his next sleigh. The wagon promises a fuel economy of 7.84 L/100 kms fuel economy, which means the sleigh will be kinder to the environment than his current means of transporting gifts to the world’s children. As an added benefit, the EcoBoost engine – which is finely tuned for high-speed performance – would offer speeds much faster than Santa ever travelled in his former 36-hoofpowered sleigh. The expected upgrade comes as a record number of children earn spots on the “nice” list, increasing the payload weight of his bag of gifts beyond the normal tow rating of his nine-reindeer team. Santa told me that changing his mode of transportation will not compromise his ability to remain true to his mission. “My goal is and always has been

allow him to keep a close eye on his gifts in the second and third row. From its 60/40 three-passenger second-row bench seat through fold-flat second- and third-row seating with third-row independent fore-and-aft sliding capability, the wagon quickly adapts to accommodate multiple combinations of elves and presents. The MyKey programmable ignition key restricts maximum speed should a mischievous elf get behind the wheel while Claus is down a chimney leaving gifts. With eight cupholders, Claus and his elves would have plenty of space to take along a few glasses of milk as they continue through their busy night. Rain-sensing wipers would keep Claus on the move, as there’s always a chance he’ll encounter nasty weather. “As always, we are busy making toys and checking long lists,” says Santa. “That said, Merry Christmas to all!” Of course, Mrs. Claus will have the final say on this purchase because, as any dealership owner will tell you, women make the final decision in 80 per cent of new vehicle purchases. Keep your eyes peeled Tuesday night to see if Santa got his Christmas wish.

2014 GMC Acadia Denali: full-size luxury At first, I was ‘‘a little sceptical
about this vehicle but...after the first few kilometres, I found it to be a very comfortable and fun to drive vehicle.
’’
Ian Harwood
The 2014 GMC Acadia Denali is truly a full-size crossover vehicle. That’s right, an eight-passenger crossover that is big enough to haul eight adults and still have room to store your gear.

Saturday is my usual run around day; picking up things, dropping off people, some of whom I don’t know but someone in my family has volunteered me to drive them anyway. You know the kind of day, the one that finds me buying things that we don’t need but can’t live without, returning things that apparently we can live without, and providing hourly updates to my wife on what I have accomplished thus far. Hectic and stressful. Well, this particular Saturday I had the Acadia Denali and with a few hours driving this vehicle I was actually relaxed. Luxurious seating and a premium Bose stereo system with steering wheel controls that drowned out all the chatter from the back seats. It also came in handy for when they tried to include me in the conversation; with a simple push of the volume button I could yell back “sorry, I can’t hear you”. see Denali page 5

All three rows receive the same level of luxury. French stitching on all of the leather seats with a choice of colors, Ebony or Cocoa Dune. The second row seats are a SmartSlide flat-folding 60/40 split bench while the third row is a 60/40 split bench that folds flat as well. The third row is surprisingly comfortable and enough leg room for adults. The steering wheel is leather wrapped with mahogany wood grain trim; it also features a tilt and telescopic steering column. The centre of the dash is the location for the colour touch Radio/Navigation screen with IntelliLink. A 165 mm (6.5”) colour touch screen display, AM/FM stereo with CD player, auxiliary audio input jack, Bluetooth streaming audio, hands free calling, and a rear seat entertainment system. If you’re excited about cup holders then hold on to yourself, this vehicle has twelve. I know because I had to clean each one. Twelve in an eightseater, go figure. The Acadia comes standard with driver and front passenger airbags, seat mounted side impact bags and side curtain air bags. Traction control and stability control with roll stability control are also standard. Forward collision
alert, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, and side blind zone alert are some of the latest technologies that have gone into this vehicle. Power: The 3.6 Litre V6 engine puts out 288 horsepower @ 6,300 rpm with 270 ft pounds of torque. The transmission is a 6-speed automatic that can be shifted into manual mode. Pump frequency: 13.3/ 8.8 L/100 km (City/ Highway) Warranty support: Basic 3 year/ 60,000 km Power-train 5 year/ 160,000 km Roadside assistance 5 year/ 160,000 km At first, I was a little sceptical about this vehicle but after the first few kilometres, I changed my mind and found it to be a very comfortable and a fun to drive vehicle. Although there is lots of room inside it does not give the impression of a big SUV, and it manoeuvres quite well. With the latest technologies added, I found it easy to use and very useful. Shoulder checks are something I do by habit, but with the side blind zone alert feature it is like having someone else take a second look, which is comforting.

Car and motorcycle goodies for Christmas
A die cast model car is a great gift under the tree By Alexandra Straub Looking for the perfect gift for the car lover in your life? – I am too. In the search for some cool swag, here are a few places you can stop by or check out online for some unique pieces of automotive goodness. Blipshift.com ($15.00 + shipping) Direct from the website, it says, “Blipshift brings you high quality, limited edition autoenthusiast focused shirts for just $15. Each shirt is available for only a few days before it is towed off to the crusher, never to be printed again.” If you wan to torture yourself
Reach
and see some amazing designs from weeks past, you can do so by scrolling through the different pages. Sometimes, there are extras in specific designs so might just be in luck. blipshift.com Carry all for the Motorcycle: Ogio Rig 9800 Rolling Luggage Bag $250 (approx.) For anyone carrying motorcycle gear frequently, this is a fabulous bag. I recently purchased one and I love it. It fit both my motocross gear (big, chunky boots), pants, shirt, elbow and knee pads and my one-piece leather racing suit, track boots, gloves AND a helmet. Yes, there’s a specific area
to put your helmet. I checked it in at the airport and there were no issues. It’s heavy duty, and has handles at very convenient sports. The kicker? It can stand upright by itself. It’s pricey but worth the investment. ogio.com Wilkinson Automobilia (Various prices) Need a book, DVD, poster or die cast model? Chances are Wilkinson Automobilia will have it. With unique items in store every day, it really is a place where any car lover could spend most of their pay cheques. Should you not live in the Lower Mainland, fear not, they have an online store, which is eautomobilia.com There are items there that appeal to both four and twowheel enthusiasts. A Visit to the Spa (for your Car. Various prices) It’s a good feeling when you’re feeling clean. And we all know that winter is not a season that promotes spotlessness. With salt on the roads, grime hanging around, and foreign objects getting stuck to your vehicle, you’d wonder how a bath can even help. Well, it does. Washing it cleans off the salt that covers the roads and can help prevent
corrosion. And on the inside, think of what your boots bring in. A trip to the spa prevents stains from totally setting in and can leave your car smelling good, too. Whether getting just a quick treatment or the full shebang, your ride will thank you for it. Build a Racecar in 158 Pieces ($24.99) Building a racecar can be done in 158 pieces thanks to Lego. If you’re young, or young at heart, surely you’ll have a good time assembling this “toy!” Plus, it looks cool.
shop.lego.com Steering in the Right Direction (From approx. $240.00) Want to spice up your ride? Perhaps add a sporty element? Sparco makes steering wheels for both street and race cars. Then again, it’s kind of a onestop shop. They also sell race attire, seats, shoes and more. If nothing else, they make some very comfortable hats! sparcousa.com alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

In Loving Memory of Matthew Curtis Memories of you at Christmas and times throughout the years. Remembering your smile and laughter brings us a silent tear. Handing out the Christmas gifts wrapped so nice beneath the tree. Stockings in the morning full as if it would always be. Places to go, people to see, running into the house with haste. Going to the Kings Lodge in England soon, basically no time to waste. Full of energy, full of life, encouraging us each new day. Sensitive to all of us, let’s go to the King you would say. Raising your one eyebrow high, the twinkle in your eye. We think of you each passing day, there was no time to say goodbye.

DORATTY: With loved ones at his bedside, 97 year old Robert Owen Doratty was called to his eternal rest on Monday, December 16, 2013. He was born in Natal, BC on December 3, 1916 to parents Benjamin and Teresa Doratty. Bob graduated from the MichelNatal High School and in 1940, enlisted with the Canadian Scottish Regiment. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, Bob was one of many Canadian soldiers that stormed Juno Beach on the coast of Normandy; the victory that became the turning point for WWII. At war’s end, Bob returned to Canada and began employment at the Michel Colliery. He met his soul-mate, Marie Larson, and the two were married in 1947. Bob was very disciplined in his life and loved to go for walks outdoors, surrounded by nature. His family was the joy of his life, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren brought him a lot of pleasure. Molly was the love of his life; he knew from the moment they met that she was the one for him. They enjoyed 66 wonderful years together and raised five children. His son and four daughters adored him and what he represented in their lives. They will cherish many fond memories of their time together. Bob is survived by his beloved wife Marie (Molly) and their children: Bob (Rose) Doratty, Lorna (Roland) Perri, Judy (Roger) Berdusco, Kathy (Andy) Wilson, and Nancy (Rob) Roulston, 13 grandchildren: Russell (Annie), Robert, Lauren (Christian), Alana (David), Diana (Brett), Kirsten (Rob), Jeff (Tegan), Dan (Melanie), Jillian (Zoltan), Kayla, Cara, Brett and Pearce, 9 great grandchildren: Zoe, Desmond, Hazel, Gus, Chase, Sydne, Julius, Mia and Seren, his brother Brian Doratty and his sister-in-law Sheila Little as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Teresa and Benjamin, and his brother Jack Doratty. Bob’s life was celebrated during a Memorial Service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Saturday, December 21st with Father Bart van Roijen, Celebrant. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Elk Valley Senior Housing Society for the Lilac Terrace Building Fund. The family would like to thank Dr.'s Michal & Clark for their kind care for Dad over the years. We would also like to thank all the wonderful staff at Lilac Terrace in Sparwood; his home for the last four years. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.cherishememoriesfs.com Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.

If you have them, you might not know what to do with them, and if you don’t have them, you might wish you did. If they’re done right, there’s nothing quite like exposed beams to enhance the cachet of a room. Would you love to incorporate this archi tectural feature in your home but don’t have the grandiose budget to match? Here’s the solu tion. First of all, you can find fake wood beams on the market. Made of polyurethane or poly styrene, they are much more affordable than a solid wood beam. Even better, you can create a false beam at a fraction of the price by using MDF (fiberboard) pan els. The first step in mak ing a false beam is to cut three strips of MDF of the same width; typically, they range from 15 to 20 cm. Next, glue and nail them on 5x7cm wood uprights. The goal is to build a

Now all you have to do is paint or stain the beams according to the look you want to give the room: pale, dark, or natural. It is possible to give your beams the look of natural wood by creating a grain with a woodgraining tool or
rocker. MDF with a wood grain finish is also available in stores. The addition of false beams should be done sparingly in order not to give the room a heavy look. Of course, the ceiling should also be high enough to lend itself to this imposing architectural style.

Decorative bricks (or faux bricks) are more affordable than regu lar bricks and are gai ning in popularity as a decorative element for homes. And best of all, you don’t have to be a qualified stone mason in order to lay them. PreParation Decorative bricks are usually laid on ply wood or plasterboard. Clean the underlying surface thoroughly and apply a primer if ne cessary. In some cases, the addition of a layer of wire mesh may be necessary. It goes without saying that the wall surface
or floor should be level before you begin work. inStallation Spread the glue with a notched trowel over one small area at a time, starting at the bottom of the wall. Place the bricks, leav ing an equal space between each of them and ensuring that the joints are offset from one row to the next. Check frequently to ensure that the row of bricks is level. Use a miter saw fit ted with a ceramic blade for cutting the bricks at the end of the rows. Recuperate the remnants to start a new row. Brick cor ners, used to cover the
corners of three dimen sional objects, such as those on a mantel piece, are also avail able on the market. Now all that’s left to do is to fill the joints with mortar according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apart from the tradi tional red brick, many models and colors of decorative stones are available in stores. To
find the best product for your project, as well as the appropriate installation technique, be sure to ask a profes sional for advice.
