Polar bear swims test participants’ iron constitution Costumes encouraged for annual dips at Nanaimo and Lantzville beaches By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

Ironman competitors and brave souls will have two opportunities to test their mettle in frigid waters this holiday season. There will be a traditional polar bear swim in Lantzville on Jan. 1 as well as one in Nanaimo on Boxing Day and both are longtime events. The swim in Lantzville, organized by Kim Plumley and John Garenkooper, will take place near Harper Beach at noon and according to Plumley, was started 20 years ago by Garenkooper. She said it’s a fun event despite the cold and there will also be a bonfire going to keep people warm. “I do it with my whole family – except my small daughter now is too smart. She says ‘I’m not doing that,’ – but we always say if we can do

that on New Year’s Day, we can do pretty much anything throughout the year,” said Plumley, adding that it’s “silly fun.” She recommends bringing water shoes. About six days earlier, more specifically Boxing Day, Royal LePage Nanaimo Realty will be hosting a polar bear swim at Departure Bay Beach at Kin Hut beginning at 1 p.m., with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. The Nanaimo swim has been taking place for 54 years, started by former mayor, the late Frank Ney, and as such, is officially called the 54th annual Frank Ney Memorial Polar Bear Swim. “Boxing Day gives us a bit of a jump on everybody else that’s out there,” explained Royal LePage realtor and organizer Buddy McRae. “We find there’s a lot of people that visit family and friends in and around Nanaimo that time of year

and Boxing Day generally can be a bit of a quieter day out there, too.” In addition, the Shriners will be on hand, selling

hot dogs, with proceeds going to the B.C. Children’s Hospital Burn Fund and there will be a 50/50 draw with proceeds

going to the Haven Society in Nanaimo. Both McRae and Plumley say their events are free, a welcome relief

from the stresses of the holidays and are encouraging participants to come in costume. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

End of year common time for many faiths to celebrate family, peace By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN

’Tis the season to be jolly or to light the yule log or dance around the bonfire, read holy scriptures, give presents, share with the hungry or simply spend quality time with family and reflect on what’s really important in life. Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus and traditions surrounding that observance, might be the main theme of the season among Canadian Christians, but there are other traditions celebrated here by various religions. Gift giving and the sharing of food with those less fortunate seems to be universal, but how the season is observed spiritually varies somewhat.

Douglas Headworth, chairman of Interfaith B.C., said his members will ring in the New Year by encouraging people to make Nanaimo a city of compassion, culminating in three days of compassionate action around Valentine’s Day. “That’s what the Interfaith, as a broader community, is looking at this year – just bringing compassion and joy to the midIsland lives of all of our faiths and traditions and remembering the golden rule,” Headworth said. Druids, which Headworth happens to be, celebrated the winter solstice on Saturday by observing the Falling of the Holly King (the Winter King) and the start of the Rise of the Oak King and the transition toward summer. tion includes the ancient Celtic practice of burning a yule log, usually a log cut from holly, that represents winter’s passing into embers. Mistletoe is also hung to celebrate the return of light to the world and to help give expression to true love. Hannukah and the lighting of the menorah is celebrated by the Jewish faith Nov. 25-Dec. 5. The period represents a time of struggle for the Jewish people more than 2,000 years ago when the Seleucids (Syrian-Greeks) who ruled Jerusalem attempted to convert the people of Israel to Greek culture and religion. There really is no religious festival coinciding with Christmas in the Jewish faith other than the lighting of candles for the Shabbat or sabbath, observed every Saturday, which this holi-

day season fall on Dec. 21 and 28, and the reading of the Torah. “It’s a very, very special day,” said rabbi Meir Kaplan. “To be able to stay home – we don’t watch TV – we just sit home with the family and talk about the things are important in life. I think this is a message anyone can take – the idea – especially in the kind of world we have today and at this time of year when everyone is running and rushing and not having a moment to sit and think about what are the important values we live for.” Sikhism also has festivals that happen around the holiday season, but the reasons for those observances are far removed from Christmas. “In the Sikh religion, something goes on every month

because there are 10 gurus,” said Joe Dodd, president of the Vancouver Island Khalsa Diwan Society. “We celebrate almost throughout the year, but most important is the Guru Nanak birthday – the first guru.” Near Christmastime the martyrdom of the 10th Guru Gobind Singh’s children is celebrated followed by the observance of his birth on Jan. 5. Of course some Canadian traditions a have been adopted over the years too, like buying Christmas presents. “In our situation or any family, if you don’t have gifts for the kids or whatever, the kids get upset,” Dodd said. “Whatever goes around … I’m doing it. I live in Canada. It’s a holiday and a peaceful time.” photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Christmas dinners offer place for all

I

charitiES plaN variety of events. By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN

The warm feelings of giving and receiving will come from hot meals, clothing and a chance for people to gather over Christmas and Boxing Day. Organizations have coordinated to spread good cheer over the holidays this year instead of serving it all up at once. The Salvation Army, for instance, served two sittings for turkey dinners Dec. 15, leaving other organizations to have their days of giving and celebration. The Nanaimo 7-10 Club, at 205-285 Prideaux St., is extending its hours for Christmas Day will be open for breakfast 9 a.m. to noon, serving a pancake breakfast. “ I t ’s s c r a m b l e d eggs, ham, potatoes and fruit,” said Gord Fuller, 7-10 Club soci-

ety chairman. The club will reopen 1-4 p.m. “It’s a drop-in for people who just want to stop by and say ‘hi’ or for people who just have nowhere to go,” Fuller said. Nanaimo Seventh Day Adventist Church is opening its doors on Christmas Day for the ninth year running. A pancake breakfast starts at 10 a.m. and turkey dinners with all the fixings will be served starting at 3:30 p.m. “But people can come and spend the whole day because we’ve got Christmas movies showing, we’ll have card games on the tables that people can play, coffee – endless coffee – and treats,” said Darlene van Appelen, church volunteer. The church will also have a room with donated used warm clothing for people who need to ward off the chill outdoors. “We have coupled up with Loaves and Fishes [food bank] again this year, so

we’ll also be giving out bags of food at the end of the dinner,” van Appelen said. The all-day event is for anyone who has no place to go Christmas Day. Rides will be provided for people who do not have transportation, by calling van Appelen at 250-729-5976. Volunteers with Together We Can are taking their goodwill to the corner of Haliburton and Farquhar streets in front of Robinson Rentals on Boxing Day, 3-7 p.m.

“I remember one year when it snowed and there was a girl walking down there. She had just regular shoes on, miniskirt and just a sweater and she looked like she was half frozen,” said volunteer Don Varnier. The group happened to have a parka, jeans and other clothing on hand that fit her. “It’s nice when we’re able to hit the right person and help them out. It’s just a good feeling.” photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Inbrief city scene

Truck crash clogs highway The Island’s main arterial needed bypass surgery, so to speak, after a delivery truck flipped on the Island Highway Thursday. The crash happened just south of the Duke Point interchange at about 3:30 p.m. when a five-tonne cube van, driven southbound by a 20-year-old man from Brentwood Bay, veered off the road to the right and hit a steel lamp standard, police said. The driver then overcorrected his steering and hit the concrete centre median, causing the van to flip into the air and land on its side in the northbound lanes. No other vehicles were involved, the driver was not injured, but was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for observation. Debris from the lamp standard and cement barriers blocked much of the four lanes for about 90 minutes and traffic had to be rerouted along alternate routes. Police are looking at driver fatigue as a probable cause for the crash and the investigation is continuing.

Transit service to be extended The Regional District of Nanaimo signed a community transit partnership agreement with the Snaw-Naw-As First Nation for the provision of custom transit (HandyDart) service. Previously, the HandyDart service made stops around the SnawNaw-As upper village site but did not stop in the village. According to a press release, the two had been working on the agreement since the spring and the service will incorporate the user-pay system with cost determined by the number of rides received by the community. The service will begin in 2014 and the cost will be shared with B.C. Transit.

Doug Martin, left, Jack McGougan, Ian Moore, Big Boys Toys owner Ed McDonald and other volunteers unload more than 4,200 kilograms of food to stack Hamperville shelves Thursday. Big Boys collected more than 6,100 kg of food for Christmas hampers in Nanaimo and Parksville during its annual campaign to fill its motorhome with food for underprivileged families.

Move allows centre to expand programs By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN

Before its move, the Nanaimo Women’s Centre had become so cramped it was meeting some clients in the backyard. People were being counselled among stacks of clothing donations and certain programs had to be held off site. The resource centre was packed with people – many in crisis – according to executive director Lesley Clarke, who said it was starting to feel like the centre was unable to meet the needs of its clients. The organization moved last week with the help of relocation aid from the City of Nanaimo. It will now be housed out of the Archie Johnstone building on Wallace Street, a space more than five times as large as its former home in the Old City Quarter. The move, paid for with a

$165,000 grant, will now allow the not-for-profit agency to expand programs for men and families and offer a one-stop shop of services ranging from healthy cooking classes to counselling, tenancy aid and advocacy. “It’s a huge sense of relief among staff and volunteers and I think clients as well feel the same thing because we aren’t under the stress of trying to offer as many services as we do in a space that isn’t adequate,” said Clarke. The Nanaimo Women’s Centre started looking for a space this fall, recognizing its lease expired in December and it had outgrown its space. Lisa Marie Barron, project development coordinator, said it had never been adequate to provide the services needed in the community and limited what the agency was able to provide clients.

For example, it couldn’t safely house both women in crisis and families with men simultaneously, which meant at times, staff members had to meet families off site or in the backyard. There was also only one counselling room. If the space was booked and a woman under crisis dropped in, the centre “just couldn’t meet their needs,” said Clarke. In the new space, there could now be three counselling rooms, a separate area to store donations and workshop space. Female clients will have a ‘safe space’ separate from an area slated to provide programs and resources for families and men. The move happened last week with the help of volunteers from the Young Professionals of Nanaimo. The new location will open Jan. 2.

Forgotten letters from the First World War are about to get their final delivery to the granddaughter of the woman who wrote them. The postmark will also bring a close to the 30-year quest by a man in Britain who vowed to get them to their author’s descendants. Jeff Coleman, a retired banker in Watford, U.K., contacted the News Bulletin in November requesting help with finding the family of Florence Kilburn who wrote the letters in 1917 and 1918 to her fiancé, Stanley Isaacson, who was with the British Expeditionary Forces in France. When he returned from the war, the couple emigrated to Canada, married in Montreal and eventually settled in Nanaimo. The letters were discovered in a small suitcase in 1980 when the bank Coleman worked at in Watford conducted an audit. The owner of the letters couldn’t be found, and rather than having them destroyed, Coleman took them into his care to find a recipient. Initial attempts in the early 1980s failed, but ultimately a friend with a knack for genealogy applied her Internet informationgathering skills to come up with new leads pointing to Nanaimo in 2013. An article that ran in the News Bulletin in late November generated plenty of response from readers eager to help. Some of them eventually got in contact with Patricia Clanton – Stanley and Florence’s granddaughter – who lives in San Diego, Calif., and sent her copies of the story. Clanton, born in Nanaimo, is a

pediatric nurse who moved to California in 1978. She comes to Nanaimo about three times each year to visit her mother who lives at Dover House. Clanton called from San Diego Monday to say she had been in contact with Coleman and how excited she was about the news she would be receiving her grandmother’s letters. “She was just the nicest person you could ever imagine and I was an only child and an only grandchild, so she spoiled me absolutely rotten, but she was a lovely person and I spent a ton of my childhood with her,” Clanton said of her grandmother. “The picture [of letters] that you put in the paper, that was absolutely her handwriting.” The news of the letters has kindled Clanton’s interest in finding out more about her extended family, some of whom she has never met. “I can’t believe that he held onto them and did so much research,” Clanton said. “What a cool guy [Coleman] is. He’s just amazing.” Coleman is just as thrilled that after more than 30 years he finally has someone to forward the letters to. “Me, I’m more excited for Patricia and just so pleased I kept hold of the letters,” Coleman said in an e-mail. “I’ve always held strong links with my family’s history and treasure many items and places from their past, so to be able to restore, to a muchloved granddaughter, a long lost and unknown (till now) family treasure is just wonderful and very rewarding – knowing in my heart of hearts that I did the right thing. “I feel I should be saying something very profound and meaningful, but that’s not really me,” Coleman said. “I’m more the sentimental family type who just didn’t have the heart to see all those precious letters destroyed.” photos@nanaimobulletin.com

EDITORIAL

You no longer have mail

A recent decision by Canada Post to phase out its home delivery service in favour of community mail boxes has some groups up in arms and even shocked by the announcement. But when you step back and look at the situation on the whole, the writing has been on the wall for years. Statistics have shown that the standard mail process (now unflatteringly nicknamed snail mail) has been rapidly declining. The art of the written word has been quickly replaced by the typed word. In the Internet age, people have the opportunity to communicate with each other all over the world, without having to place their messages in envelopes and sending them off. E-mail, Facebook and Twitter have made the “personal letter” all but obsolete. And more and more utility companies, credit cards or other billing agencies are turning to e-mail invoices and bills, rather than leaving a messy and expensive paper trail. It is more efficient, less costly and it’s even environmentally friendly. However, Canada Post’s announcement still seems a little extreme considering the other options available. Rather than completely ending its home delivery system, which caters to about five million homes at this point, a reduction in delivery would seem like a better first step. Why not deliver the mail three times a week, then eventually downgrade to once a week? That way seniors, or others who have difficulty moving, could still receive their mail at home without the stress or inconvenience of arranging transportation to the proposed community mailboxes. Surprising as it may seem, not everyone is web savvy, or has the money to afford a computer. Of course, with another increase in the cost of stamps, they will soon be unaffordable as well.

But we can’t sink to the constant personal attacks and lies so often employed to deliberately sow doubt and confusion around critical, life-threatening issues like pollution, climate change and environmental degradation. We’re seeing more evidence every day of the damage we’re doing to our only home, the Earth, with our unbridled pursuit of profit and endless growth, and our mad rush to extract all the planet’s precious fossil fuels so that we can burn them as quickly as possible to make money while the market’s hot. We’re seeing increasing instances of the kinds of extreme weather events predicted by climate scientists, from flooding in Calgary and Toronto to typhoons and cyclones in the Philippines, Italy and India to tornados in the U.S. We’re seeing mounting evidence of the consequences of our actions in the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fifth Assessment Report. We’re also seeing where solutions lie. There’s still time to turn around, but we need everyone to raise the bar on discussion and action – in politics, the media and our own lives.

City can do better on tax rates I think sometimes it is good to look at things a little differently. Take for example what our city council has been able to do for us over the past 10 years. They did not waste over $100 million dollars on improve sewer and water because it would appear they believe cost of those basic needs should be paid for by increasing user fees. They spent the tax dollars on the things that are important to all tax payers. The important: convention centre, theatres, public outhouse, old CPR property, a pretty new annex,

changing the council sitting arrangement and the list goes on. We also have to give them credit that we got up to the second highest private property tax city in B.C. With just a few more years on this path of increased taxes, double-digit user fee increases and a few more special levies, we could be the highest in North America. While raising private property taxes, they have lowered the industrial taxes to one of the lowest in B.C. The lower taxes did not give them the business base gains they wanted, so they started offering no tax to many new

companies with limited success. Like a councillor said, the city has lowered the industrial taxes by a great deal to be fair to them and keep them operational and unfortunately the residential taxes had to take up the slack. Is this really the future we want for Nanaimo? There are an ever increasing number of cities that have said no tax and user fee increases. Cities have gone for more than five years with zero or reduced taxes, so why can Nanaimo not be one of them?

To the Editor,

Re: Youth in Politics, Dec. 17. This started as a good article and a legitimate issue. I met George Anderson early in his career. He turned up at

a Conservative party gathering and this signalled a foresight that impressed me. Unfortunately the opinion of an assistant professor of political science was introduced and instead of keeping the focus on the subject, she made the blatantly politically motivated statement, “You see this with Justin Trudeau.” Trudeau, far from being anywhere near the age of Anderson, is middle aged and the criticism he is getting is that by now he should have some knowledge of his profession.

Charles Reid Nanaimo

To the Editor,

Re: Relocate beavers to solve dam issue, Opinion, Dec. 17. Was Chris Bush trying to be #15 sarcastic? Maybe it was a stab at humour. First, the coal was washed near downtown so the waste water went into the ocean. The pipeline was connected to Colliery Dam lake. If bleeding hearts think the park should be ‘naturized,’ how far do you want to go back in time to undo man’s footprint? We could go back just 25 years and bulldoze most of the north end and plant the trees that once thrived there. Go back 50 years, all that would be there is Wellington mine town. If you go back to the time the dam was built, just tear down the whole city and give it back to the First Nations. Just save the dam. Neil Saunders Nanaimo

Re: Youth in Politics: the next generation of political leaders, Dec. 17. Thank you ,Tamara Cunningham, for shedding light on the issue of youth in politics. So very informative hearing what these young councillors have had to deal with and hearing of their determination to rise above. I believe you highlighting their struggles will open some eyes. They are the future, as the cliche goes. Let’s encourage them. And thank them.

Toy zebRA performs at the Queen’s.

By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN

Toy Zebra will be performing at the Queens for three nights beginning on

Thursday (Dec. 26). “[Nanaimo] is pretty much our favourite place to play,” guitarist Cam Wilkison said. “It’s more intimate than the stuff we do in Vancouver. We also got lots of family and friends out here so it’s kind of like a mini vacation for us.”

Toy Zebra originally began under the name Crimson Reign in 2006. They decided to change names in 2011 and have since been performing mainly as a cover band. “We’ve committed our weekends to doing just the cover thing because it keeps us playing and it keeps our chops up,” Wilkison said. “We work on originals during the week but a lot of the clubs and places we play they just want music that people are going to dance to.” Wilkison, along with his brother and fellow bandmate Tanner, became involved in music because of

their grandfather. “When we were young he put a guitar in my hand and a bass in his (Tanner) hands and hoped something would happen,” Wilkison said. “And it did.” The brothers, along with drummer Callum Jackman cover everything from Muse, The Killers, Billy Idol, as well as music from the 1970s and ’60s. Wilkison said they try not to put their own spin or flavour on their covers. “We were pretty

much raised to do songs as they are,” he said. “When you play stuff in front of people and you play it differently they will say something sounds weird and they won’t be able to tell you what it is but they’ll be able to hear it.” Although Toy Zebra is mainly a cover band, they have put out their own original work including a three-song EP. “It’s kind of a modern alternative rock with lots of vocal har-

The band is already booked solid until next December with shows on the Island and the mainland. “We all love doing it but it does get exhausting for sure,” Wilkison said. “Especially when we were working mornings after the night of playing.” Toy Zebra are looking forward to working on and releasing new material in 2014. “That’s definitely our goal,” Wilkison said. “Probably not a full album but another EP. Probably five songs but we haven’t really captured our sound just yet. We are still experimenting and playing with ideas and trying to see what we can kind of capture.” arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Arts initiative receives boost Friday the 13th proved to be lucky for the After School Sport and Arts Initiative as it got a big boost from the B.C. government. Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Coralee Oakes announced that the the initiative would receive $2 million to double the existing number of program spaces to 15,000. “I have seen firsthand what a difference these programs make in the lives of kids who otherwise may not have connections to the community,” Oakes said in a press release. “One child characterized it, literally, as life-changing. … It’s about building confidence and lifeskills that these kids will rely on for a lifetime.” The initiative was created to provide disadvantaged children with opportunities to organized activities in their communities after school.

Welcome to the driver’s seat

There are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6. Zack Spencer

Honda’s contemporary on a dying breed 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6 It’s fascinating to watch trends in the auto industry play out over time. Some changes happen quickly, with one manufacturer coming out with a feature, then the rest of the industry following suit. Backup cameras would be a good example of this. Other trends are much slower, changing because of demographic fluctuations. One example of a slow-moving trend is the two-door coupe falling out of favour and its replacement by sedans and crossovers. This trend is greatly affected by baby boomers getting older and buying more for practical reason, rather than styling. In the 1980s, and even the beginning of the 90s, there were plenty of coupes to choose from and they sold well. But where are the Honda Prelude, Toyota Celica, Pontiac Sunfire and Ford Probe coupes? Now gone and many not replaced with newer models. I’m thrilled to report that there are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6. Looks The Accord Coupe is based on the all-new Accord sedan that has been selling very well for Honda. In fact, it won the Canadian Car of the Year this year as decided by the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada. Honda has done a good job of updating this big coupe with a more modern twist. Sold in three configurations from the base EX to the EX-L Navi (L stand for leather and navi is self-explanatory),

which are both 4-cylinder way the radio stores and equipped models. The top retrieves pre-set radio trim is the EX-L Navi with stations. It took a long V6. This top trim level is the time to set the stereo model seen here: it comes up and having to go with LED projector headback and forth between lamps, 18-inch wheels and different screens is not duel chrome exhaust tips. If you like the idea that intuitive. The rest of The 4-cylinder equipped the dash is large, with big models come with halogen of a smart looking car cup holder and plenty of headlamps and 17-inch storage areas. that is well equipped alloy wheels. Zack Spencer alloy wheels, the price is Drive Another trend almost identical. The EX-L that Honda is bucking, with this Accord is $30,100 for the leather and navi and Coupe, is the inclusion of a 6-speed the V6 premium is $35,500. Not an manual transmission and V6 engine. The inexpensive car but most are very well latest movement is to turbo or superequipped. charged 4-cylinder engines to replace V6

‘‘

’’

Inside It’s a big and comfortable coupe. The back seat is actually usable for adults and the front seats are very comfortable. The trunk is huge and the back seat folds for extra long items but the seats do not split and fold, plus the opening to the back seat is small. Standard feature on all Accord models is a backup camera and heated seats. Honda, in my opinion, has raised the bar in the mid-sized category and produced the nicest dash I have seen in this class. There are two screens in the centre console, one for the navigation unit and the other for the radio. They are framed in beautiful, high quality satin metal, chrome and soft touch materials. One area that could be improved is the

power plants and duel clutch automatic transmission in favour of a manual. I’m glad that Honda still offers this layout; it shows they are serious about being a true enthusiast’s car company. Granted, most buyers will get the very good 6-speed automatic transmission with the 3.5L V6, but with 278hp and 252 lb.ft. of torque it will be a very lively car in either configuration. The manual is a joy to use and it is like a throwback to drive a V6 equipped manual car. The 4-cylinder models have 185hp from a direct injection 2.4L engine and either a manual transmission or continuously variable transmission (CVT) for added fuel savings. The CVT is capable of 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.7L on the highway. The

V6 uses more at 10.0L/100km in the city and 6.1L on the highway. Verdict When I started reviewing cars back in the early 1990s, cars like this were common: a mid-sized sedan with a V6 engine and a manual transmission. I can clearly remember driving a Toyota Camry, Nissan Maxima and Accord equipped this way. While most companies are moving away from this design, Honda is sticking with it for now. Soon Honda will have smaller turbocharged 4-cylinder engines available and this big coupe might too be fitted with something more efficient. If you like the idea of a smart looking car that is well equipped and powerful, you might want to move on an Accord Coupe V6 before it follows the latest trend.

The Lowdown Power: 2.4L 4-cylinder with 185hp or 3.5L V6 with 278hp Fill-up: 7.8L/5.7L/100km (city/highway 4-cylinder) Sticker price: $26,400-$35,500

Subaru Forester kind of like a dependable friend

Charging ahead with plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars The future of cars may be electric but do not expect 2014 to be the dawn of the new age. There’s a long road ahead for manufacturers trying to woo the driving public into buying a car with a cord attached. Throw in the sales numbers for all-electric cars, plug-in hybrids and gas-battery hybrids and they don’t come anywhere

near five per cent of total vehicle sales. The commercial conundrum is that these (more) eco-friendly vehicles come with a premium sticker price beyond most folks and the only way to bring them in range is to sell many more! Governments have incentive rebates for those that make a green choice. While successful to a degree, they alone aren’t

going to turn us all on. If gas prices soar then some more buyers will go the hybrid route but that said there are an awful lot of four-cylinder vehicles out there that are remarkably economical on gas. Let’s get our heads out of the clouds and accept that economy of purchase and operation are what drives most sales.

A redesigned third-generation Subaru Forester was an early 2009 model year release. A new look, better performance, enhanced safety features and more interior space were all achieved without drastic changes to the exterior dimensions of this popular compact utility vehicle. A “Boxer type engine, with horizontally opposed cylinders (like a Porsche engine), and a symmetrical all-wheel-drive system distinguish a Subaru, as a Subaru. Forester has an excellent history of mechanical dependability and the Subaru essentials are packaged with a practical, utilitarian body. Compared to the previous generation Forester, the ’09 came with a new chassis with a wider track and a longer wheelbase, plus a new double wishbone rear suspension. The structural changes also yielded extra cargo space and more

While reliable, it’s no rocket and flat-out acceleration to 100km/hour takes more than 10 seconds. Agile handling does help compensate for tame straight-line speed. The holidays are an uplifting time but also one with a heavy environmental impact. “We collect more garbage in the two weeks after Christmas than at any other time of the year so maximizing food waste collection and curbside and other local recycling opportunities is more important than ever,” said Gary Franssen, manager of sanitation and recycling for the City of Nanaimo.

Choose to make memories instead of waste by taking family and friends to a concert, skating or holiday events. Other ideas are donating to a charity or environmental organization in the person’s name, giving recreation passes, transit tickets or buying locally produced goods that sustain the region’s economy. Save time and money by using reusable gift bags that can easily be stored for next season or wrap a gift in a gift and save ribbon and bows for reuse. HAPPY ENDINGS:

Hamsters, Bearded Dragons, Starsky & Poco Hamsters - We had two dwarf hamsters here that were up for adoption and some times these little guys can take a while to find their own homes. Happily, both were adopted almost right away and are now living in great homes! Congratulations to these little furry guys!

Bearded Dragons - Our bearded dragons were brought to us when they were left behind in an apartment. One of them was in a cardboard box, and one was in a cluttered, dirty aquarium. They were very underweight and needed some TLC. They loved their new terrariums here at the shelter, and they loved spending time with staff and having baths! They were adopted and are now living with reptile savvy people and are doing excellent. What a happy ending to a sad story! Starsky and Hutch - These little guys came to us and were just the sweetest min pins that we have met! They were fun to have here at the shelter and were so funny and comical. They each went to great homes and are doing so well!

Gypsy, Misty, Mom & Robbie

Little Gypsy is a sweet and comical dog! She came to us when her owners could no longer care for her. She is smaller than the photos seem, but she is a lot of dog! She will make an excellent agility partner as she is fast and agile. This little fence jumper bonds quickly with her people and is very easy to train. She will need an active home, and one that can provide her with the mental stimulation that her active brain craves. If you are looking for a dog to work with, consider Gypsy! Misty is a sweet, tiny dog. She came to us with matted fur and an ear infection and seemed sad and scared. Not anymore! This little girl is cleaned up and happy! FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENTS DEATHS

Florence “Bernice” Raffle

April 26, 1924 ~ December 16, 2013 It is with great sadness the family of Bernice Raffle (nee Carruthers) announce her quiet passing on December 16, 2013 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with her family at her side, after years of struggling with heart problems. Born on April 26, 1924 in Nanaimo, BC the daughter of Miriam (nee Maki) and Robert Carruthers. She was married on December 13, 1947 to her husband, Jim Raffle who predeceased her in December 1990. Although an only child, Bernice loved her large extended family and their yearly get-togethers keeping them up to date on the family. Bernice was a member of the Nanaimo Museum who enjoyed talking about the history of this town; that her family had played a part in the Chase River, Southend and Brechin areas and the life-long friends she made. Always referring to herself as a coal miner’s granddaughter/daughter she was proud of the fact that 6 generations of both sides of her family had lived in Nanaimo. As a 44 year member of Branch #10 Legion LA earning the Certificate of Merit and Golden Jubilee medal for her services to the branch; she was also a former CGG leader known to many Brownies as “Fluffy Owl.” As the consummate soccer mom for many years, she was a hardworking supporter of her husband, children and grandchildren’s endeavours, plus the co-convenor of the three Pygmy-Odd-fellows dance reunions and the Brechin School Reunion. Her working years were spent at David Spencers and Canada Safeway as a grocery clerk where she enjoyed chatting with her customers. Bernice is survived by her loving daughter, Joyce (Murray) Wenner; son, Robert (Lynne) Raffle; 4 grandchildren: Kari (Clint) O’Hara Nanaimo, Kristopher (Barb) Raffle Vancouver, Kimberlee Wenner, Victoria and Carly Wenner Vancouver; plus 1 great-grandson, Niall O’Hara - the light of her life. Also left to mourn are her three godchildren: Donald Marks, Gordon Pilling and Kim Wilson, plus numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Always feisty and independent, Bernice managed to stay in her family home till ill health necessitated the recent move to Lakeside Gardens where she lived until her passing. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff, of Central Drugs; Doctors R. Swain, N. Janssen, and K. King; plus Lakeside Gardens and the attendants for all their help over the years. There will be no funeral as per her request but a celebration of her life will be held later in the new year. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the NRGH Hospital Foundation or the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Cremation arrangements by the First Memorial Society.

Nanaimo News Bulletin Tuesday, December 24, 2013

’Tis the night before Christmas… News Bulletin sports columnist Ian Thorpe rhymes off reasons to love Nanaimo sports

’T

is the night before Christmas, and all through the town, Athletes are resting, as leagues are shut down. Teams are enjoying some holiday fun; Reflecting, perhaps, on the year nearly done. It’s that time of the year for my annual ditty To recognize sportsmen who live in our city. My goal is to offer a thank you of sorts, Acknowledging people who take part in sports. Yes, time once again for a Thorpe Report rhyme, Though poetry lovers may think it’s a crime. For sometimes my verses may strike a wrong chord, With rhymes more outrageous than Mayor Rob Ford!

Santa Claus likes the holiday season, but he thinks lacrosse season is the most wonderful time of the year.

There are hundreds of players, on teams of all sorts; Officials and coaches devoted to sports. I’ve made up a list, and checked it with care; My apologies, though, for names that aren’t there…

FILE PHOTO

e’ll start in arenas where athletes are found; W Ringette, for example, brings Christie around. Roller skate derby did feature some games;

Gould and her teammates are Brass Knuckle Dames! or Boas and Lassam, lacrosse is the goal; FBishop Turley and Carter played referee role. and Young, and Merner could cheer;

Ball hockey players did Brzovic find; Campbell and Bartlett had Wilson in mind. Youth Sticking Together showed plenty of pride; They set a new record for game played inside!

Angell was honoured as coach of the year!

Ice hockey action sees kids with great pep; Hodgson helps referee house teams and rep. Bortolotto and Paul provide leadership strong, With Creighton, Borelli, Klymchuk, and Long.

Zuccaro aids youngsters to lace on a boot, With Kozubal, Taylor, Myhrer and Groot. Boulton and Baird will help players to learn; For Sommerfeld’s guidance do referees turn.

McDougall and Cashmore saw field lacrosse grow; With championship medals, Raiders did glow. Magnan and Mousseau for Terris hit mark, With Parker, Chicqueen, Diplock and Clark.

With Silvertip Midgets, Dubyna’s in sight; For Junior B Bucs, coaching is Knight. Levesques as the owners could give a big smile; New dressing room project was finished in style.

Now Merriman, Kang, and Glennie as well, Are VIU coaches, their players will tell. As host of provincials were Mariners spurred; Kostering, Cato, helped men’s team take third.

Giles was the captain for team junior B; For junior A players, Fleming wore ‘C.’ Struggles all year put the team to the test, Though Shires and Mickelson gave it their best.

Games played at Beban attract a large crowd; Usually our Clippers will make the fans proud. Vandekamp’s coaching will give players spark, Boosting the team above .500 mark.

For men in Div. 1, the outlook is fresh; Coach Valentim’s hoping his players will mesh. With Newlands, Mehrassa, Escobar, Greig, United should challenge for top of the league!

At senior B level, Swanson was boss; Playoffs were ended by overtime loss. Maughan and his players then quickly perked up, Receiving a berth at the Presidents Cup!

On Taylor, Brosseau, who take the team higher, On Argue in net, and captain who’s Prier. On Rempal and Brauer, with talent displayed; On Kovacs as well, acquired by trade.

ootball Nanaimo has Faickney in charge; FRasmussen Renton and Strutt are directors at large. and Fletcher keep players in sight,

For senior A Timbermen, playoffs were missed, But future is bright, coach Toth will insist. When Nicholson’s trading sent Ranger away, Bremner and Brebber stepped up with their play!

Brydges and Falk are in old timers’ league; Edwards and Monk never show their fatigue. With Robillard reffing, the players don’t squawk, But Gold’s sudden death was a terrible shock.

As Redmen won title, coach Roden could cheer; Passing for touchdown was Lyle to Severe. Borserio, Vos, Odynsky were key; Linebacker Schulz was the game MVP.

ow back in the summer when weather was hot, NYouth Fields were all busy with balls hit and caught. teams in fastball had Cawthorne set tone;

soccer fields now, where many teams swarm; TFirstoGirls showed their talent on U16 Storm. on the Island, then second in B.C.,

Coach Reid and coach Whiting had reason for glee.

Bulldogs from Barsby are champions too, In double-A playoffs they really came through. Taylor with Rainey and Parker did play; Conversion by Vollet made Stevenson’s day!

Softball for women saw Wells at the plate; Johnson and Nichol with fastpitch relate. Coach Delaronde helped Diamonds to shine; Murray and Rickson with Breakers did fine.

NDSS Islanders went on a roll, With Docherty coaching, and Higgins in goal. The underdog girls created surprise; Provincials resulted in bronze medal prize!

Raiders this year seemed to be on a roll, But finished with loss at Canadian Bowl. Abassi as owner has reason to frown, As Blokker from coaching is now stepping down.

On senior men’s fastball, Belton kept eye; Playoffs saw Wheatsheaf, Palladian vie. Palladian won, with Peters on mound; MVP Lucas of Wheatsheaf was crowned.

U21 Highlanders captured a cup; To Stefanek players like Roberts look up. Youth teams comprise Harbour City FC; Both Johnson and Saywell will quickly agree.

With Largue, Bihari, Taylor and Wright.

Petersen’s women ran leagues of their own.

Frank, the company founder, started the tradition 54 years ago, and the current president Barry Clark has continued the event since Frank’s passing. This event is headed by Fred Maguire and Buddy McRae, who have rounded up their crew of merry pirates to harvest bananas, arrange hot dog vendors, entertainment and ice to cool the waters of Departure Bay. Enjoy the frolic, water skiers and music. Bring your friends and family, young and old. Receive bathtub dollars and certificates at 1pm on December 26th. Sign up at the Kin Hut at 11:30am.

Misty is a sweet, tiny dog. She came to us with matted fur and an ear infection and seemed sad and scared. Not anymore! This little girl is cleaned up and happy! Misty has a neurological issue, so she will always walk with a wobble, and does fall over from time to time. She doesn’t let it stop her though! She loves to run around! She is just waiting for her spay appointment and then she will be ready for her own home! If you are looking for a sweet, little dog, this might be the one! MISTY

Mom is a very sweet girl. She came to us with a broken pelvis and is now healing up and ready for her own home. She will need an indoor only home as her pelvis is still a bit tender. She is a quiet, affectionate cat and we will be offering a discounted adoption fee if we can find the right fit for someone looking for a companion and willing to give her the retirement home that she deserves! MOM We currently have 3 rabbits up for adoption at the shelter. These little guys can wait far too long for their own homes. If you are considering adding a rabbit to your family, please come to see us today!

Robbie has been a stray cat for the past couple years, we tried to find his home but we didn’t have any luck. He has just had dental work and is now ready for his new family. We don’t have any info on his previous life but he has been around other cats and seems to keep to himself. Robbie does have a longer coat and will need to be brushed every couple days to help keep it nice. This kitty has been quite shy so far but is getting a bit more settled, we are still getting to know him. ROBBIE Little Gypsy is a sweet and comical dog! LITTLE GYPSY

We have learned that Daisy would prefer a home where she can be the only cat. Daisy would do best in an indoor/outdoor home as she gets a little stir crazy inside. She has a short low maintenance coat requiring occasional grooming, Daisy loves attention and cuddles as long as it’s on her terms. she may not be suitable with small children.

When you compete, it’s nice to have won, But games for the youngsters should always be fun. So in amateur sport, let everyone play; To win at all costs can ruin the day. No matter what sport, one rule is the same: Always play fair, whatever the game! And try to remember that when you compete, Be humble in winning, show grace in defeat.

thorpe report Ian Thorpe Columnist

Give it your best, whatever you do, But always show class, good sportsmanship too. And now I’ll exclaim to all readers in sight: Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
