Bouwman heading to Dominican on school building mission BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
École Steffie Woima Elementary School teacher Amy Bouwman is looking forward to her participation in building a school in the Dominican Republic next month. She’ll participate in a Lifetouch Memory Mission from Jan. 21-28 with about 50 volunteers to build a vocational school for children in a small, mountainous farming community. Lifetouch, the leading national provider of school and family photography, organized the trip and invited school administrators, principals, educators and PTA members throughout North America to work alongside their volunteers and Dominican nationals on the project. This is the third Memory Mission to Constanza. In 2011 and 2012 volunteers built an elementary school. That school now serves hundreds of children who otherwise would not have had a chance to receive an education. Volunteers will work on a variety of projects, including block and

They will also have an opportunity to visit community members and participate in a day of photography for the children in this village, many of whom have never seen a photo of themselves. Since the inception of the Lifetouch Memory Mission in 2000, Lifetouch hands have helped rebuild a village in war-ravaged Kosovo, repair homes in Appalachia, establish a children’s center in Jamaica, and construct a bridge in the land of the Navajo in Arizona. They have built 11 schools across Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Curling rink to close in April 2014 due to age, structural issues Dear Editor, After all the excitement of the multiplex plans hitting the news, there is one building that has not been mentioned. The town-owned Sylvan Lake Curling Rink ice surface is being condemned as of April 2014 due to structural instability. The curlers have already been locked out of the building twice in one month due to the amount of snow on the roof. The curling club has left a legacy of four parcels of land to the community of Sylvan Lake. The site for the new town office, the site for the town swimming pool, the site of Lions Park — in cooperation with The Knights of Pythias, the Lions and Rotary — and of course the site where the present curling club stands. The present facility was used as a community hall until the present community centre was built. In the earlier years this association also provided a skating rink and tennis courts. It is amazing how much this association has contributed to the town. If you would like more information on the history of the curling club, just contact the club and it will be provided for you, as it is too long to mention here. The town had offered curlers a chance to go into the new multiplex with the reduction from five sheets to three or four. You can’t have a bonspiel on three sheets of ice and four is tough. I wonder if any of the other sports were asked to go smaller. What the town is offering us now is $1.5 million to build a new ice surface and to renovate the lounge and viewing area of the present building. This doesn’t even cover the cost of the ice surface. This is a 60 year old building that is older than the first ice surface for hockey. I extend the invitation for councillors, mayor and anyone who wants to see what is happening inside this building to go down and talk to the man-
ager to see what the problems are with this facility. I have curled in this facility for 27 year. I have watched new facilities being built for many different sports and associations in this town. Curling is one of the few sports, if not the only sport, to not have a building replaced and a new facility that we can show off and be proud of. I have had people tell me they won’t curl in our building because it is too old. I also had people tell me they wouldn’t move to Sylvan Lake because of the rec. facilities including the old curling rink. This facility is open all year round to host other sports and events. We have hosted the 2009 Alberta Scotties, 2011 Investor Cup Mixed, and the 2013 Optimists Alberta Juvenile playdowns. The curling club is a few days away from hosting the Jiffy Lube 2014 Alberta Scotties from January 8-12. We are bringing major curling events and exposure to the Town of Sylvan Lake, as some of these events are televised. This association is economically supporting the community by bringing in out of town customers, just like hockey or any other sport or event that happens in this town. Congratulations to all sports and associations in Sylvan who are enjoying your town built facilities. I would like to know if any of the associations or sports have contributed any funds to their building. If you would like to share this with me please e-mail mjohan@xplornet.com. As of April 2014, curlers in Sylvan Lake will no longer have an ice surface on which to curl on, to enjoy their favourite sport. These are my opinions, they are no way associated with the other curlers or the rink. Lorie Johanson, Longtime curler, Sylvan Lake

On the whole, the province of Alberta has experienced a very fine autumn. This is particularly true of southern Alberta where harvesting was completed in record time. Central and northern Alberta were somewhat delayed by occasional storms. There is
no snow in the south as this is written on Dec. 14th, and very little cold weather has been experienced in this part of the province. ♦ ♦ ♦ Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Nearing end of year, will total be above $500,000? BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The past couple of issues of Sylvan Lake News have been filled with stories and photos portraying the generosity of our community. During Sylvan Lake’s Centennial we’re attempting to quantify the generosity of our community with information and a running tally of donations to various groups and organizations. Below, as well as new donations, we’re also listing those where pictures may have appeared in the last issue or two so we can keep our cumulative total upto-date. We know how giving our community is and we want to emphasize that with this column. Please feel free to add to our list.

WISE MEN WORSHIP Warren Kay, Pastor Sylvan Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church
This Christmas Season we celebrate the birth of Jesus and realize how amazing this gift of God really is. Literally God became flesh and lived among us. That is so remarkable. The Bible recounts what God did, the remarkable way he treated people. He always included those who were left out, always giving hope instead of judgment and condemnation, always eager to take time to talk in whatever setting, be it to the crowd or just one on one. The story begins with the birth of Jesus and shepherds arrive to see if what the angels had told them was really true. Having seen the newborn child lying in a manger they tell the story to all returning to their flocks, glorifying and praising God. Then sometime later the wise men arrive from the long

trek as they followed the star and came to the house in Bethlehem where Mary and Joseph were and before presenting their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh they bowed down and worshipped him, the One who is the King of the Jews. We often describe the three gifts given by these wise men and miss the fourth gift of worship. Their long journey was complete. Their reason for the trek across the desert to find this newborn king had been accomplished. And so they bowed down and worshipped this baby, the long awaited Messiah. The question is who will you worship this Christmas season? To what are you drawn? The pretty lights, the sparkling tree with its many gifts or will you pause to worship the One who left heaven to be born on earth so you and I could live a better life, eternally. Wise men (women and children) still worship Him. 4308 - 50 Avenue 403-887-1401

Community Programs BUSINESS VISITATION PROGRAM (BVP) What is it? The BVP is a confidential one-on-one meeting between the municipal Economic Development Officer (EDO) and an owner or manager of a business that is licensed to conduct business in the Town of Sylvan Lake. What is the purpose? The BVP serves multiple functions: . Provides opportunity for the EDO to get to know businesses and their needs, challenges and issues from a local perspective, . A means of gathering data that will support future investment and business attraction, . A forum to discuss municipal influenced issues that affect the success of your business, . A method to identify human resource or business training requirements and appropriate timing for delivery of workshops and information sessions, . An avenue for the EDO to share small and medium-sized business resources that support retention, expansion, business start-ups or aspiring entrepreneurs …and more! How much time does the business need to schedule? A series of standard questions have been developed in order to gain an overall outlook of the local economy and its drivers. The visitation usually lasts 1 to 1-1/2 hours as information gathered is recorded electronically in a BVP template during the program. How do I set up a meeting date and time? Interim budget approved so town can continue operating BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Youth Foundation based on the portion of the building on 50th Street that is leased by the group and 50 per cent of the adjacent parking lot. The grant would be paid for the four years 2013 through 2016 based on the town receiving certain financial documents from the non-profit society. Incline operates an indoor skate and BMX park at that location. Councillors spent considerable time discussing the issue. The first motion, proposed by staff was lost in a tied vote. Subsequent motions which reduced the amount of the overall grant were unanimously supported. Mayor Sean McIntyre was absent.
During their regular meeting Dec. 9, Sylvan Lake councillors: • approved an interim budget so the town can continue operating in 2014 prior to completion of a final budget. It’s anticipated the 2014 budget will be passed by council in February, after extensive presentations in January. • agreed to conditionally provide an operating grant equal to property taxes to Incline Industries

JONES Viola Violet Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” Viola Violet Jones lived a life that was a gift to us all. Viola Violet Jones of Independence, Missouri passed away on December 1, 2013 in Apache Junction, Arizona. Violet was born on July 31, 1924 to Don Carloss Thomas and Rosie Violet Fisher. She was the oldest of seven children, and the only girl. She often mentioned the trials and tribulations of being “Sis” to six younger brothers. Her brothers adored her and looked up to her for guidance and love throughout her life. Raised during the Depression, Violet’s experiences of doing without and working hard continually shaped her life and personality. She was truly a member of The Greatest Generation. Violet graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1941. After her graduation she attended beauty school and graduated with a degree in Cosmetology. She vividly remembered being on the bus riding to her beauty school classes when she heard the Japanese had just attacked Pearl Harbor. On July 29, 1942 she married the love of her life, Norman Russell Jones. Norman and Violet were married for 49 years until his passing on February 12, 1992. They built a beautiful home and life together at 1230 South Liberty in Independence. In 1949, Violet and Norman converted their garage into a beauty shop, and there Violet ran SouthTown Beauty Shop for over 50 years. In 1956 Norman and Violet welcomed their daughter, Dreama Lynn, into their lives. They were doting and loving parents and their little family of three made their lives complete. Violet and Norman loved to travel and see the country. One of their greatest joys was hooking up their Surburban to their Airstream and heading down the road. Their love of travel eventually led them to spending the winters as Arizona Snowbirds. In Arizona they met a wonderful couple, Edie and Ray Niemela. Who would know that one day when Ray and Violet each found themselves alone after the deaths of Edie and Norman that their romance would blossom!? Ray and Violet were married on January 30, 2000. Violet’s greatest love and joy was her family. She doted on her grandchildren, Emily and Graham, and enjoyed many happy hours “playing Grandma.” She also embraced her new “Canadian” family and they adopted her as well. She cherished the many summer months she spent on their canola farm with a view of the Canadian Rockies. Violet is survived by her husband, Ray Niemela of Benalto, Canada, her daughter and son-in-law Dreama and Fletcher Aldredge of Sedona, Arizona, her granddaughter, Emily Johnson of Denver, CO, her grandson, Graham Aldredge of Flagstaff, AZ, and her brother, Danny Thomas of Independence. She also leaves behind many, many loving relatives and friends. Violet was a lifelong long member of the Enoch Hill Community of Christ Church. Violet’s last few days could not have been more perfect and would have been just what she would have chosen. She spent a wonderful Thanksgiving in Denver, Colorado surrounded by her family, then headed to Arizona for another warm winter. On Sunday evening she enjoyed a lovely dinner with Ray and her lifelong best friend, Betty Olson and her husband, Orbin. She came home from dinner, kissed Ray goodnight, and went to bed. She woke up in heaven with what we all know is many, many stars in her crown - an expression she used frequently in describing the good deeds we should all do for each other each day to earn our reward in heaven. Violet, Mom, Granny, Sis... we will miss you every moment, but we know your crown is loaded with those stars... so many you probably can’t even hold your head up and it’s messing up your hair. Rest in peace. Rest in beauty. Rest in the assurance your life was well lived and you will be forever loved. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence, MO 64055. Burial followed at Mound Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Harvesters or online at Harvesters.org. or to the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be expressed at www.speakschapel.com

Lakusta joins small group when he earned second degree black belt BY KEN SUMNER SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Sensei Grady Lakusta travelled to Red Deer for his second degree black belt test, Dec. 14. This test is one of the more uncommon tests as few students make it this far. Grady, has been doing martial arts now for a number of years. He started training with Arashi-Do while he was young and has continued through his teenage years. He is now 17 and still training consistently.
He has taken a role of assistant instructor, as well as the primary instructor for the competition team. Now, he’s being recognized for his knowledge and dedication to karate. The second degree black belt test is an extension of the black belt karate program. The black belt is not the end but just a stepping stone through the path of karate. The degrees, starting from one and going up to 10, denote further understanding, and mastery of the martial art of karate. The black belt symbolizes the understanding and
knowledge of the basics. The further degrees denote further understanding, further knowledge, and dedication to be martial art of karate. Grady, started out as a young boy, and has now matured into a excellent man. His courage, levelheadedness, and loyalty have grown and been nurtured through his path to the martial arts. As a result Grady was invited to the black belt test in Red Deer. Through the two and half hour technical, and then the two hour Sparring test, Grady showed
poise, grit, and relentless spirits. Then through the ceremony, was awarded his second degree black. He joins a very small group of people from Sylvan Lake who have achieved this rank. The last person before Grady was Sensei Ken, the head instructor of ArashiDo Sylvan Lake. Sensei Ken achieved this rank in 2009. Both Sensei Ken and Sensei Grady continue to train Karate and Brazilian Jiujitsu in Sylvan Lake.
