Bill and Cristina Evanow and their children, Jessica, Matthew, Daniel and Liam, are grateful for the support their have received from the community.

A new place to call home for Christmas

C

S tor y by Neil Corbett ristina Evanow had a garage full of donations that still needed to be sorted, but the woman at her door was insistent – there must be something the family still needed after losing its home in a fire. Evanow thought for a moment, then suggested the family of six didn’t have any end tables or lamps, and two of her teenage sons no longer had ski pants. The woman returned with all of it – two new end tables, a set of four new lamps of different varieties, and two pairs of ski pants. She wasn’t sure the snow gear would fit, so she gave Cristina the receipt, for $200. “It’s unbelievable, the lengths some people will go to, to help,” said Cristina, sitting at a dining room table in her cozy new home on Wicklow Way, reflecting on all of the good things that have happened to her family in the past month. A suspicious fire took the home of Bill and Cristina Evanow on Nov. 13. They were still watching firefighters working at their old place, at 223rd St. and 119th Ave. in the heart of downtown Maple Ridge,

when people started to help. The kids were all standing around barefoot. If they had been in that house another two or three minutes, firefighters told them, there is a good chance some may not have gotten out. A neighbour took notice of 20-year-old Jessica Evanow’s bare feet, went home, and came back with some shoes for her. “They didn’t fit, but they were shoes,” Cristina said.

“The response was immediate,” Bill said. “The fire wasn’t out yet, and we had people offering to help.” Their neighbours – Kim, Pam and Mandy – took them in that morning, at 6 a.m., and gave them a place to collect themselves. Then their hosts started collecting donations. The days after the fire were tough on Bill. The family had no insurance. His daughter went to stay with a friend, but the couple and their three teenage sons were staying at the Quality Inn, as they searched for a new rental house. They had to go through the burned-out place they called home for eight years, rescuing smoky smelling family photos and other mementos. “It was devastating to walk through,” Bill said. It was virtually a total loss. “We were scrambling,” he added. “You’re homeless, and you start to realize how close you were to the loss of life. It’s hard to even focus.” The community they have called home for 18 years came to their rescue. “I’ve been blown away, every day since the fire,” said Cristina.

Bill’s brother Pete took charge of donations. He set up an email account for people to contact the family if they wanted to help, and soon all of the trappings of a comfortable life started to come to the family. Eventually, Cristina started to manage the email account – there were 86 messages from donors for her to respond to. She estimates there were 50 individuals. The family has been given flat screen televisions, two desktop computers and a laptop, a king-size bed and bedroom furniture. A local realtor gave them a $100 cheque. The list goes on. “It’s been absolutely amazing, the support from the community,” said Cristina. “They have donated custom-made couches, incredible dining room tables … One woman asked what I need. I said I really need a vacuum, or an electric griddle. She said, ‘Done. What else?’” “And these are complete and utter strangers.” Save-on Foods put up a display asking customers to “Help the Evanow family,” with a newspaper clipping of their story. The family’s cupboards are now full. See Home, p4

Their new bathroom counter is stocked with bottles of shampoo and toiletries. When Cristina goes to Saveon Foods, a quick trip takes half an hour, because people want to talk about how the family is doing. “I need a disguise. It’s almost overwhelming.” They needed to renovate their new home to create a bedroom for Jessica. Standard Building Supplies of Burnaby had a truck deliver a full pallet of wood, drywall, insulation and materials, worth about $1,000, Bill estimates. Rona gave him electrical supplies at cost. “It’s incredible. You’ve never met them – they’re in and out of your life in seconds,” Bill said “ … it’s just feelings of warmth and gratitude.” Family friend Bill Treen is donating his carpentry skills to help get the new room built. His son went to school with Jessica. One of the Evanow boys, Liam, played football for Samuel

Bill and Christina Evanow look for salvageable items from their kitchen after a suspicious fire. Robertson Technical, and the Titans family came through with furniture, gift cards, school lunches for him and more. The Social Justice Group and the school also came to help. Cristina used to sing in the choir at St. Paul’s Church, and a flood of donations came from there. Daniel Evanow goes to Maple Ridge secondary, and that school

has been collecting donations for the family, as well, and are due to arrive any day. “We’re not really lacking a heck of a lot,” Bill said. The family actually has a choice of furniture, and some will be donated back to local charities. “I’m just so grateful for all the support we’ve received,” said Cristina. All is not perfect,

though. Cristina teaches English as a Second Language, and all of her materials were damaged in the fire. She had accumulated lots of plants – “like a Greek restaurant” – but none survived the fire. Their other boy, Matt, lost his basketball jerseys, fitted hats and electronic entertainment. Jessica lost $4,000 worth of furniture, bought for her room with money she earned working at a fast food restaurant. She used to model, but her portfolio was damaged. Cristina and Bill feel bad for the kids. But they are happy in their new home, as it takes shape. “It’s beautiful – a real comfortable feel to it.” “We’ll have a good Christmas,” said Cristina. “We’re alive, we’re here together, and we’re going to be good.” • Any further enquiries can be directed to evanowfamily@gmail.com.

Poll finds more drivers hate Port Mann Bridge tolls after one year by Jeff Nage l Black Press

A new poll has found Lower Mainland motorists are more opposed to tolls on the Port Mann Bridge now than they were a year ago, when the charge was first imposed. The Insights West online survey found 56 per cent are opposed to the toll, up from 45 per cent a year ago. And dissatisfaction with paying to use the Highway 1 crossing of the Fraser River is greatest among frequent users. Nearly three quarters of those surveyed who use the bridge once a week or more oppose the toll, Insights West vice-president Mario Canseco said. “The issue of tolling remains contentious and opposition to the tolls has intensified.” The poll comes as most bridge users face having to pay even more come January. Half-price discounts

Half of respondents said they will just pay $3 toll when 50 per cent discount ends. for the first year end on Jan. 1, when the bulk of traffic using the bridge will begin paying the full $3 toll, instead of $1.50. The survey found 31 per cent of drivers will actively seek out a free alternative route in 2014 to avoid paying the toll, while 23 per cent said they would drive over the bridge less often. Of drivers who use the Port Mann at least

weekly, 48 per cent said they will continue to use it as usual and just pay the toll. “Some casual drivers have already chosen other routes, such as the Pattullo Bridge, in order to save some cash,” Canseco said. “Still, practically half of heavy Port Mann Bridge users are just going to carry on when the toll goes up.” Canseco noted the number of drivers who

said they did not use the Port Mann Bridge at all in the past 12 months has climbed to 22 per cent, from 10 per cent when the same question was asked a year ago. Although the bridge discounts are ending, provincial government officials say new lanes on Highway 1 through Coquitlam and Burnaby are opening up that will relieve traffic bottlenecks and reduce travel times.

THE NEWS/opinion Letter

Long-lost letter It is disappointing to those who continue to use Canada Post to send and receive mail. However, the Crown corporation’s recent decision to do away with door-to-door delivery in urban areas is anything but a surprise. Canada Post is only the latest in a long line of institutions caught in the technological revolution that is the Internet. Newspaper publishers better than most the challenges the technology has presented. However, the Internet is not going anywhere, so we adapt or die – and that includes Canada Post. While the postal-workers’ union continues to point to the 2012 profit realized by Canada Post, it often neglects to add the fine print found in Canada Post’s 2012 annual report. Yes, Canada Post’s annual report notes a $127 million profit – but it points out clearly that profit would have been a $25-million loss had reductions in sick leave and post-retirement health benefits not been agreed to in the latest collection agreement with its union. And, it adds, those reductions were one-time realizations, not recurring. In fact, the future looks bleak for the venerable institution, with the Conference Board of Canada predicting Canada Post will lose $1 billion each year by 2020. Even with the recent decision, the Conference Board estimates annual losses of about $500 million per year by 2020. Mail delivery is not a growth industry and the continual decrease in revenue and pieces of mail sent and received highlights that fact. If there is money to be made on the existing Canada Post model, surely a private company will step into the breach and realize the profit. As we do with that long-lost letter from afar, we suspect we will all be waiting in vain for such a company to fill the door-to-door role being vacated by the Crown corporation. – Kamloops This Week

Ingrid Rice

Here’s the big union idea of ‘13 VICTORIA – One of Canada’s great entrepreneurial success stories in recent years is Westjet, the Calgary-based airline that is expanding across the country and taking on European routes. Clive Beddoe, the founding CEO of Westjet, was famous B.C. Views for helping the cabin Tom Fletcher crew tidy up the plane before getting off a flight. And the company is also known for its profit-sharing program, with all employees referred to as “owners” who have a stake in the success of the operation. I thought of this management approach when news emerged that the B.C. government was offering public service unions a new kind of contract, with a five-year term and wage increases tied to improved economic growth. The surprising thing is that unions are accepting the idea, even though provincial growth must exceed the government’s independent economic forecast council projections before it can take effect in a given year. The generally non-militant Health Sciences Association was the first to recommend acceptance of a five-year agreement with only 5.5 per cent raises guaranteed. Then they were joined by negotiators for 51,000 health and social services employees, represented by the B.C. Government Employees’ Union and

other unions that have long been adversaries of the B.C. Liberals. John Fryer, negotiator for the BCGEU going back to the epic battles with Social Credit governments and now a professor at University of Victoria, wasn’t impressed when he heard the news. “These deals reflect what happens when public sector unions back the losing party in a provincial election,” he said. “Union bargaining power takes a trip down the pooper.” I think there’s more than that going on. Perhaps today’s union leadership is beginning to accept that its wage, benefit and pension arrangements look pretty good compared to the harsh reality of private businesses competing in a global economy. I asked Premier Christy Clark if this new approach is inspired by privatesector profit sharing. She agreed that is the model. “I think that’s a great principle for all of us to work from,” Clark said. “Until now, the growth of public sector wages has been completely insulated from changes in the private sector. And this is the first time we’ve ever been able to successfully link those two things. At this point it’s still a small increment wage growth, but it’s a big change, and I hope we can continue to build on it.” From an employee perspective, it is indeed modest. If real gross domestic product increases one per cent beyond the independent forecast used in the provincial budget, employees get an additional half of one per cent raise for that year. Contrast this labour relations devel-

opment with what’s happening on the federal scene. A classic confrontation is brewing between the Harper government and the Public Service Alliance of Canada. A key dispute is over sick days, which the government estimates are averaging 18 a year. PSAC currently has 15 “bankable” sick days a year, which the union president refers to as a “negotiated right.”

“These deals reflect what happens when public sector unions back the losing party in a provincial election.” John Fryer, BCGEU

It takes me back to my first union job, where I was warned never to take just one sick day. We negotiated for two at a time, so always take two, the union rep told me. Implicit in this is the mindset that employees should give as little and take as much as possible. Looking through my files each December for the B.C. story of the year, I consider what is likely to matter five or 10 years from now. This partnership approach to building the provincial economy is my pick for 2013. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.
