The City of Trail is ready for a solo flight after landing a deal to purchase the Trail Regional Airport for $1.28 million from the regional district. Trail first approached the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) in January with an official request to purchase the 4,000-foot airstrip after the city and RDKB couldn’t reach a consensus about future expansion of the regional service. “We see the airport as a key element of economic development,” said Trail Mayor Dieter Bogs. “It is very important to the future sustainability of Greater Trail,” he said. “Council believes the City of Trail can take the lead and facilitate improvements expeditiously as the sole owner and operator of the facility.” The city has prepared a business plan to self-run the airport with details soon to be released that will answer the question if Trail taxpayers will fuel the cost of airport operations and future expansion projects. “The business plan suggests the city can operate the airport without a property tax subsidy,” said David Perehudoff, Trail’s chief administrative officer (CAO). He explained that passengers are charged a $7 fee on a flight ticket, and by increasing this charge to $12, the airport
can be run on a self-funding basis without property tax subsidies. Montrose responds to end of recreation agreement
A decision made by three people during a closed meeting left Montrose Mayor Joe Danchuk feeling blindsided and disappointed with the outcome along with many active residents in the village. The three-person Beaver Valley Recreation, Parks and Trails Committee (BVPARTS), comprised of Area A director and chair Ali Grieve, Fruitvale Mayor Patricia Cecchini (alternate director) and Montrose Coun. and regional district director Don Duclos, announced its decision not to renew, renegotiate or extend the recreation services agreement with the City of Trail on Dec. 4. “Montrose was totally in the dark about this decision,” said Danchuk. “The unilateral decision to withdraw from recreation services agreement was made without consulting anyone else,” he continued. “Which has left me and our residents disappointed that the political state in our area is missing the point of recreation for all.” All residents of Montrose, Fruitvale and Electoral Area A will be subject to higher rates under the Trail Resident Program (TRP) in the new year, for facilities covered by the

An early morning emergency call from a convenience store prompted the local detachment to arrest a robber. Thursday morning, just after 5:00, police were alerted to a robbery at the 7-Eleven on Victoria Street in Trail, Sgt. Rob Hawton of the Trail and Greater District RCMP said in a news release. The 28-year old perpetrator acted alone when he brandished a knife to demand and receive cash. The call had police on site quickly to arrest the suspect, who was taken to Hospital (KBRH) for treatment suspected ingestion of a quantity of drugs.

Danchuk said the village has received numerous calls from a cross-section of people who regularly use the Trail facilities, including swim club kids, people who train at the aquatic centre, ball players, pickleball members and gym users. “After listening to all the people and the phone calls we’ve been getting I cannot say how disappointed and saddened I am by the fact that this decision was made without consulting people in the community.”

Nelson: partial 2013 summary
Fire Department “For sure our 100 anniversary celebrations, as well as the BC Fire Chief meeting celebrating the province’s inaugural meeting, in 1907, right here in the fire hall. Our wildfire public education and prevention efforts in some of the interface areas around town this year too.” – Simon Grypma, Fire chief Nelson Hydro “The Rosemont substation construction project. The old station of 50-plus years was demolished and a new station built on the same site. The new station was energized in December. This new station is part of the utility long term plans to
upgrade the distribution system and we expect to get 40-plus years of service life from it. Our EcoSave Program was a highlight too this last year. Over 400 homeowners signed up for EcoSave program so far and the first participants are already enjoying reduced energy bills and improved home comfort, in fact one of the participants is already seeing a 26 per cent reduction in home energy costs.” – Alex Love, Nelson Hydro general manager Library “The library embraced the digital age, with new Sony and Kobo e-Readers to lend and new technology training opportunities. Use of eBooks is up 150 per cent this year. We’ll have a great new technology petting zoo in 2014. We’re ever more people-friendly this year as well, with more places to sit quietly or gather
with others. There’ll be new quiet study areas next year too. We’re also reaching out with more local partnerships, and our community reference desk brings Nelson’s hardworking groups to you. Seventy six per

This year’s theme for the swim is “bring a friend.” Registration on Jan. 1 begins at 10:15 a.m. with the plunge into the Columbia River set for noon. Last year, 171 people showed up for a dip with almost 500 spectators on the shore huddled near the fire in the -2 C winter air. Art Harrison

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week December 27, 2013
Tip of the Week: On the eve of the New Year where January 1st marks the official Gregorian calendar start date of 2014, we find ourselves with many ‘balls in the air’. Comet Ison is certainly one of these and, potentially at least, the one of greatest interest and concern. While not unprecedented, we have not experienced anything quite like it in the modern era. There remain many questions about it. As well, it coincides with an important new theory in Astronomy and Cosmology. I am specifically referring to the Electric Universe theory. It stands to change our understanding of the physics of the cosmos and even provides fresh insights about gravity. The other is a reinterpretation of the constitution of comets, which is theorized to be rock and ores verses ice and dust and this theory is directly linked to the Electric Universe. As for Comet Ison, we should see it in the skies by now. Having virtually risen from the dead 3 hours after the announcement of its ‘death’ by NASA, Ison survived its graze of the Sun. Yet, it did apparently undergo some ‘damage’. The main body has been broken into many smaller pieces. It is also predicted that Earth’s orbit will pass through its tail in about mid-January, the source of a wide array of theories ranging from a delightful spectacle of meteor showers to more dire and sensational catastrophe scenarios. One source even referred to it as a sort of Star of Bethlehem due to its predicted reappearance on Christmas Eve. Astrologically, the planetary alignments do illustrate powerful themes of change and even of transformation. Hopefully these are more linked to the paradigm shift linked to the Electric Universe theory and not to actual physical events, at least regarding Comet Ison…. So, though time waits for no one and 2014 is about to begin, Ison is straddling the year date change and may literally bring it in with a bang, or two. Stay tuned….

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)
With each new day, the drum beat grows louder. You can feel the power and it spells change. From a wider angle you are about mid-stride in this process. While there is an emotional, psychological and even spiritual core theme process underway your focus now emphasizes the material. Acknowledge the reality of all these levels to maintain a healthy balance. You are in a dynamic and determined mood generally. Yet, to achieve your objectives you need elbow room. You may take this in the way of seclusion to focus on your work, projects and ambitions. At worst you may feel estranged and misunderstood by others and them by you. Though your attitude and choices may prove unpopular, you yearn for support and agreement. A rather deep and sober time continues. However, it is also sprinkled with star dust and perhaps some fluffy snowflakes too. You may notice that your perceptions are extra lucid. At worst, you feel more impatient than usual. This may be because you are picking up on other people’s needs and emotions as well as your own. Set healthy boundaries and tend to your own emotional states.
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)
Some of your more important relationships are taking on extra weight and gravity now. Yet, in this case the results stand to be quite positive. Opportunities to gain a clearer reflection of your self are implied. As well, these are likely to be of the more satisfying sort. The main thing to overcome is getting all wrapped up in others at the expense of maintaining your own center.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)
A new rhythm and overall quality of discipline is being established in your life now. This is the ideal anyway because it is the ground of new perspectives, self-concepts and cultivations of personal power. The prospect of acknowledging and integrating these qualities may feel intimidating. To overcome this anxiety, simply take things one sure step at a time.
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)
Your creativity is likely expressed on a variety of fronts. Yet, each one stands to be quite deep and emphasizes the intricate details. The next chapter of your creative life has already begun. As valid and important as it is to help and serve others, it is time to direct more attention now at cultivating your own talents. These will eventually be directed to others anyway.

Certain experiences and encounters of late are striking some deep chords. These contain themes of emotional renewal. Interestingly, both your inner child and parent are being activated simultaneously. Consequently, you want to parent and be parented somehow. This is what happens among family sometimes. Trust this flow. Sometimes it is important that we decipher whether to hold, fold, walk away or run, like now. Yet, it may be difficult to know how you feel about certain people and situations. It may take extra time and effort, but deciphering what you actually feel, need and want is important. To achieve this ask within, with confidence that you will get answers. A process of rebuilding or at least of strengthening the foundation of your sense of security has begun. You have likely come through some trying experiences linked to endings. It is also quite likely that this process will continue. Either way it will feel good and is wise to fortify your sense of security. Focus physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to achieve a whole sense of it.
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)
A growing ambition to get some extra attention is on your mind. To this end you are willing to be assertive and take the initiative. This includes reaching out to people of power and influence. Ideally you are willing to invest some time and energy into upgrading and/or training. Yet, be willing to sample if you can, before making long-term commitments.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)
Balancing outer social activity with inward retreat continues. In the bigger picture, the pace and momentum is probably quite steady and demanding. So, this presents an important window of opportunity to balance the scales. You may still want to get some work done behind the scenes, but moderation is advised at this time. Refill all your tanks.
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)
The time has come to establish a new norm. This includes a steady and consistent learning curve which is destined to continue for the next several years. Compliance with this demand of destiny will produce abundance, health, happiness, confidence and creative prowess. Get clear on the results you want to achieve and commit, and do it now.

Honda’s contemporary on a dying breed 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6 It’s fascinating to watch trends in the auto industry play out over time. Some changes happen quickly, with one manufacturer coming out with a feature, then the rest of the industry following suit. Backup cameras would be a good example of this. Other trends are much slower, changing because of demographic fluctuations. One example of a slow-moving trend is the two-door coupe falling out of favour and its replacement by sedans and crossovers. This trend is greatly affected by baby boomers getting older and buying more for practical reason, rather than styling. In the 1980s, and even the beginning of the 90s, there were plenty of coupes to choose from and they sold well. But where are the Honda Prelude, Toyota Celica, Pontiac Sunfire and Ford Probe coupes? Now gone and many not replaced with newer models. I’m thrilled to report that there are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6. Looks The Accord Coupe is based on the all-new Accord sedan that has been selling very well for Honda. In fact, it won the Canadian Car of the Year this year as decided by the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada. Honda has done a good job of updating this big coupe with a more modern twist. Sold in three configurations from the base EX to the EX-L Navi (L stand for leather and navi is self-explanatory),

which are both 4-cylinder way the radio stores and equipped models. The top retrieves pre-set radio trim is the EX-L Navi with stations. It took a long V6. This top trim level is the time to set the stereo model seen here: it comes up and having to go with LED projector headback and forth between lamps, 18-inch wheels and different screens is not duel chrome exhaust tips. If you like the idea that intuitive. The EX-L that Honda is bucking, with this Accord is $30,100 for the leather and navi and Coupe, is the inclusion of a 6-speed the V6 premium is $35,500. Not an manual transmission and V6 engine. Inside It’s a big and comfortable coupe. The back seat is actually usable for adults and the front seats are very comfortable. The trunk is huge and the back seat folds for extra long items but the seats do not split and fold, plus the opening to the back seat is small. Standard feature on all Accord models is a backup camera and heated seats. Honda, in my opinion, has raised the bar in the mid-sized category and produced the nicest dash I have seen in this class. There are two screens in the centre console, one for the navigation unit and the other for the radio. They are framed in beautiful, high quality satin metal, chrome and soft touch materials. One area that could be improved is the
power plants and duel clutch automatic transmission in favour of a manual. I’m glad that Honda still offers this layout; it shows they are serious about being a true enthusiast’s car company. Granted, most buyers will get the very good 6-speed automatic transmission with the 3.5L V6, but with 278hp and 252 lb.ft. of torque it will be a very lively car in either configuration. The manual is a joy to use and it is like a throwback to drive a V6 equipped manual car. The 4-cylinder models have 185hp from a direct injection 2.4L engine and either a manual transmission or continuously variable transmission (CVT) for added fuel savings. The CVT is capable of 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.7L on the highway. The
V6 uses more at 10.0L/100km in the city and 6.1L on the highway. Verdict When I started reviewing cars back in the early 1990s, cars like this were common: a mid-sized sedan with a V6 engine and a manual transmission. I can clearly remember driving a Toyota Camry, Nissan Maxima and Accord equipped this way. While most companies are moving away from this design, Honda is sticking with it for now. Soon Honda will have smaller turbocharged 4-cylinder engines available and this big coupe might too be fitted with something more efficient. If you like the idea of a smart looking car that is well equipped and powerful, you might want to move on an Accord Coupe V6 before it follows the latest trend.

The future of cars may be electric but do not expect 2014 to be the dawn of the new age. In fact, I predict there’s a long road ahead for manufacturers trying to woo the driving public into buying a car with a chord attached. Throw in the sales numbers for all-electric cars, plug-in hybrids and gas-battery hybrids and they don’t come anywhere near five percent of total vehicle sales. The commercial conundrum is that these (more) eco-friendly vehicles come with a premium sticker price beyond most folks and the only way to bring them in range is to sell many more!
‘‘
Range anxiety’ is a major mental obstacle for those with the resources to contemplate the purchase of an allelectric car.. Keith Morgan
’’
Most provincial governments have incentive rebates for those that make a green choice. While successful to a degree, they alone are going to turn us all on. If gas prices soar then some more buyers will go the hybrid route but that said there are an awful lot of four-cylinder vehicles out there that are remarkably economical on gas. Let’s get our heads out of the dark clouds and accept that economy of purchase and operation are what drives most sales.
STK# 1379
I am not an electric car naysayer, far from it, but we have to recognize that much needs to happen before the majority buy into this future. Sticker price is one thing but the single biggest challenge has to be the slow pace of infrastructure to fast-charge cars, whose batteries have run down mid-journey. ‘Range anxiety’ is a major mental obstacle for those with the resources to contemplate the purchase of an all-electric car such as the Nissan Leaf or Mitsubishi iMIEV. For that reason, it seems likely that the likes of the Chevrolet VOLT will enjoy more sales success as a main means of transport because an onboard gas-powered generator is ready to kick in to recharge the battery when the juice runs out. Similarly, the new BMWi3 while available as a pure electric vehicle can also be purchased with a range extending engine. Other manufacturers are set to follow that same route but in the meantime, the plug-in hybrid, which combines the pulling power of a gas engine and electric motor is the early winner of people’s green-tinged hearts. But back to the thorny issue of infrastructure. Many advocates want government to play a lead role but with all the demands made on the public pure that’s a dead end street. Maybe the tax incentives they can offer will encourage the private sector. For instance, the Canadian company Sun Country Highway has announced plans for a charging station network along the length of the Trans-Canada Highway. Other companies operating alongside major highways are extracting planning concessions from local government by installing recharging points. Hats off to BMW and its holistic approach. The German giant is collaborating with small tech companies, who will work with customers to make sure their homes don’t require a major power refit just to own one of the new i3s. And, as Dr. Ian Robertson, a BMW management board member, told me at the LA Auto Show recently there are many other power opportunities right in front our eyes. Urban areas are awash with street lights, which could be used as a source for curbside recharging. He also pointed out that there are many discontinued public phone sites in today’s cities. They have power wired to them and are ready to be tapped, should the phone company want to make a profit of more than a quarter per call. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

ICBC Safety Tip
Drives-U-Crazy Don’t you hate it when pedestrians step on an off the corner? Don’t you hate it when pedestrians step on an off the corner? You are ready to brake to allow them to cross then they step back onto the sidewalk because they fear you are not going to stop quickly
enough. Meanwhile, cars behind slam on their anchors and hit their horn in protest at your apparent indecision. As you pull away, the pedestrian glares at you! keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
