Honda’s contemporary on a dying breed 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6 t’s fascinating to watch trends in the auto industry play out over time. Some changes happen quickly, with one manufacturer coming out with a feature, hen the rest of the industry following suit. Backup cameras would be a good example of this. Other trends are much slower, changing because of demographic fluctuations. One example of a slow-moving trend is he two-door coupe falling out of favour and its replacement by sedans and crossovers. This trend is greatly affected by baby boomers getting older and buying more for practical reason, rather han styling. n the 1980s, and even the beginning of the 90s, there were plenty of coupes o choose from and they sold well. Verdict When I started reviewing cars back in the early 1990s, cars like this were common: a mid-sized sedan with a V6 engine and a manual transmission. I can clearly remember driving a Toyota Camry, Nissan Maxima and Accord equipped this way. While most companies are moving away from this design, Honda is sticking with it for now. Soon Honda will have smaller turbocharged 4-cylinder engines available and this big coupe might too be fitted with something more efficient. Chlorination order hard to swallow

No medical pot on ag land, says Chilliwack

The Progress looks back at what made news in 2013 Chilliwack tried to fight the chlorination order. In fact thousands of residents signed a petition last spring against the idea of adding chlorine to Chilliwack’s pristine drinking water in 2013, joining in with city council which also opposed it. But in the end they were overruled by concerns about public health risks and legal liability of leaving it untreated. City of Chilliwack had no choice but to comply with the order issued by Fraser Health’s medical health officer, who signed the order for a secondary disinfectant to be added in March. It was the upshot of an E. coli reading, and the ones logged prior to that, and his analysis of the risk it posed to human health. Dr. Paul Van Buynder, Chief Medical Health Officer and Vice-President Public Health for Fraser Health said there was no other option other than permanent chlorination. “Over the years, Chilliwack’s water system has been compromised on many occasions resulting in fecal coliform and E. coli bacteria entering the distribution system,” Van Buynder said. “After a review of the relevant data and conversations with public works staff at the City of Chilliwack, it is my assessment that ongoing secondary disinfection of the water supply system with chlorine or an equivalent compound is necessary to ensure a safe drinking water supply.” A huge mobilization erupted online, netting more than 5,000 signatures for a petition against chlorination. “Council is extremely disappointed to hear this news, but we have no option but to comply with the Fraser Health Authority mandate,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz at the time. She thanked the thousands of residents who made their voices heard and fought for Chilliwack’s water. Work on Chilliwack’s new $900,000 permanent and full-time chlorination system will be completed in the new year. Update: The good news is that the system upgrading is not going to increase water rates, after all. The changeover to a permanent water disinfection system is expected to be 100 per cent complete by spring of 2014.

Chilliwack was one of the first communities in B.C. to decide what to do when federal laws come into effect for growing medical marijuana. Council chose to restrict the production by com- Top Stories mercial of 2013 gr owers to a “special industrial zone,” and the reasons cited were to prevent irritants like offensive odours, security risks, and bright lights. Council approved bylaws in 2013 regulating medical marijuana grow operations (MMGOs), and prohibiting them in all zones in Chilliwack, except an amended M6 special industrial zone. One of the implications is that the medical grows will not be allowed to grow in agricultural areas. Other types of businesses operating in the M6 zone include abattoirs or slaughterhouses, asphalt manufacturers and sewage treatment plants, and now MMGOs. Although Health Canada will retain responsibility for inspections and enforcing regulations, the city can control specific conditions in the special industrial zone. Update: The city has to be ready in time for when the federal rules kick in on April 1, 2014, hence the new bylaws now in place. Other cities have made similar regulations, some opting to allow the production on ag land, others also restricting it to industrial zones. jfeinberg@theprogress.com Twitter.com/chwkjourno

Transit expansion sees ridership increase

Newly elected MLAs John Martin, left, and Laurie Throness share the applause after their win in May’s general election. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS FILE

Local Liberals share provincial win Chilliwack’s brief flirtation with an NDP representative in the legislature ended in dramatic fashion in May. Just a year after Gwen O’Mahony won a byelection in the riding of Chilliwack Hope, she lost the seat in a general election that surprised pollsters and pundits across the province. Liberal wins, both here and elsewhere in B.C., were part of a stunning turnaround that returned Premier Christy Clark to Victoria with a healthy majority government. But that wasn’t the only surprise. The announced retirement of longtime MLA John Les had earlier sparked a search by local Liberals for another candidate to run in the Chilliwack riding. They found John Martin – the BC Conservative and touted star candidate who ran against the Liberals in the Chilliwack Hope riding a year earlier.

With widespread disaffection in the BC Conservative camp, Martin announced his decision in September of 2012 to join a party he had bitterly campaigned against. “Simply put, I believe there is more that unites us than divides us,” he said at the time. His NDP opponent, meanwhile, was also not without controversy. Patti MacAhonic sought a temporary leave from her position as executive director of the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce as she attempted to secure the party’s nomination. When that was refused, she was forced to resign in January. Laurie Throness, the BC Liberal candidate who lost to O’Mahony in 2012, returned to face her again in 2013. But this

time, he’d find more success. Despite a confident NDP campaign, bolstered by preelection polling numbers that pointed to a crushing Liberal defeat, Clark and her party romped to a 50-seat majority victory. That success including Chilliwak-Hope, where Throness captured 9,533 votes, compared with O’Mahony’s 6,884. BC Conser vative candidate Michael Henshall was a distant third at 2,093. In the riding of Chilliwack, Martin cruised to an easy win. Martin garnered 48 per cent of the vote, easily outdistancing by 20 per cent Patti MacAhonic of the NDP. Said Martin, reflecting his elation election night: “Did we kick some left-wing socialist butt tonight or what?”

The expansion of the Chilliwack Transit System was a bit of an experiment, along the lines of the cinematic “if you build it, they will come.” Indeed they did build a better transit system, and ridership responded in kind by getting on the bus in droves, just as predicted. They added 7,500 service hours to the network in 2013, an increase of 30 per cent including the speedy route along Vedder/ Yale corridor with the #1 bus route. Ridership numbers almost immediately went up after the transit redesign. In fact, April 2013 saw the highest ever one-month ridership total with 34,300 people getting on a Chilliwack bus. Of that, 21,400 were riding on #1, which zips north/south

every 20 minutes. Chilliwack transit riders were stoked to learn they were getting the biggest transit service expansion in the city’s history. The expansion meant higher fares. An adult ticket jumped to $2 from $1.50. Youth and senior fares $1.75 from $1.25. So transit fares went up 25 per cent, or 50 cents for the average one-way ticket, marking the first fare increase in five years. Two new buses came online to handle the extra hours. That allowed Chilliwack Transit to better serve the University of the Fraser Valley in the south, and Chilliwack middle and secondary schools in the north end. The two new routes

brought service closer to homes and malls. Route No. 7 Broadway will serve west Chilliwack and Route No. 8 Tyson will link neighbourhoods in the south. They added longer ser vice hours until 10 p.m. six days a week and statutor y holiday service at Sunday levels. The changes, said BC Transit President and CEO Manuel Achadinha, were expected to make the Chilliwack transit system “more efficient and effective.” Update: For more information on routes call 604.795.3838 or www.bctransit.com/ regions/chw/

Sardis gets its own library

Mayor Sharon Gaetz opens the new Sardis Library.

May saw the triumphant opening of the Sardis library to serve the growing population on the south side of town. “Libraries are also important for fostering a love of books and reading, and for developing curiosity about the world around us,” Mayor Gaetz told the crowd at the groundbreaking. She quoted Dr. Seuss, one of her “favourite” authors, for inspiration: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go.” Gaetz also credited the “tremendous work” on the project by mem-

bers of council, staff, FVRL board and staff, “and of course the countless people in our community who are so passionate about libraries and our city.” The design-build team of Titan Construction and Craven Huston Powers Architects created a sustainable design for the $2.5 million building, geared to conserving natural resources, reducing costs and creating a high-quality environment. The total library project budget was $3.4 million, including costs like brand-new books, and landscaping. Features of the 10,600-square-foot building near Twin Rinks include a

multi-purpose space accessible after library hours. City officials saved up to pay for the library-building project in advance with their pay-as-you-go philosophy, rather than financing it over the long term. Update: It may mean that the Chilliwack budget was feeling the financial pinch this budget year, heading into the first full year of library operations, but it was expected. The brand-new facility has seen solid numbers come through the doors so far, according to city officials. jfeinberg@theprogress.com Twitter.com/chwkjourno

Question: I have noticed that my skin is looking dull and I have some sun spots that have appeared. What can I do?

The Progress It’s a school like no other. This year, after nearly five years of planning, Chilliwack school district finally opened the doors to the new Chilliwack secondary school. The wait was well worth it, said school principal Rick Jones. “Clearly there’s just a different vibe in this building than the old one,” said Jones earlier this month. If you didn’t live in Chilliwack and were to drive by the new building, you wouldn’t be faulted for thinking it was a college campus… or maybe, even something space age. The modern, threestory facility is twice the size of the old building. It has a professional gym, an industrial teaching kitchen, gallery wall mounts for student art, and a murphy bed stage in the cafeteria that’s used, on average, every two weeks for lunch-time

There’s floorto-ceiling windows that look out onto a mountainous view, breakout spaces with bistro tables and chairs, and a park-like setting outside with picnic tables surrounded by classic Chilliwack greener y and a Seawall-like trail for both walkers and cyclists. The interior, so large,

it requires directional cues by way of East and West posters tacked to the wood-slat walls. The school’s WayFinder system was also turned on for the first time last week. A three-dimensional, interactive mapping touchscreen that helps direct students, staff and community to their desired locations. “To me, [this facility] has much more of a college campus feel than

a high school,” said Jones. “You don’t need to go to a Starbucks to sit in a bistro chair and be comfortable – the kids just generally feel more comfortable in this building. We don’t have nearly the number of students leaving at break.” As is shown by cafeteria sales tripling since moving in to the new building.

Answer: Over the years sun damage causes us to have broken capillaries and sun spots which can make us look 10 years older. We have various ways to improve skin texture and tone. We can start by using a combination of physician grade treatment products which include Vitamin A, hydroquinone and sunblock as well as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). Usually 3 - 5 treatments are necessary. If you are interested in a more aggressive treatment we can combine physician grade products, IPL and Fraxel laser – the combination will enhance each others results. You will need to continue protecting yourself from the sun and use sunblocks, hats and sunglasses to maintain the results. Dr. Marianna Snyman

R AESIDE

Taking the easy way out The Conservative federal government recently opted not to address the very urgent and growing problem that is the Canadian Pension Plan. Instead offering any sort of meaningful reform or choosing to adequately fund CPP so that Canadians can expect to be taken care of - after having spent a lifetime of paying taxes - the Conservatives instead opted to do nothing, and presumably hope the problem just goes away. It’s no secret that CPP is underfunded. And given the country’s demographics - with millions of Canadians facing retirement in coming years - this is an issue that can’t be put off any longer. Seniors now make up close to 15 per cent of Canada’s population, totalling more than 4 million people. And with the median age in Canada now over 40 years old for the first time ever, the issue of our aging population and how to take care of them isn’t going away. The issue is clear to see: Canadians are living longer, and as a result, drawing on CPP more than in generations past. As result, we need to do a better job of funding CPP if we want it to work. Finance minister Jim Flaherty needn’t worry about his own financial future, of course. As an MP who has served more than six years in the house of commons, Flaherty has a gold-plated taxpayer-funded pension to draw on for the rest of his life, upon his retirement. The rest of us aren’t so lucky. Adequately funding CPP is the fiscally responsible thing to do, but it is also politically difficult. As a result, the Conservatives have taken the easy way out, opting for the instant gratification of low taxes in the present at the cost of a stable future for our citizens. And isn’t that how we got into this mess in the first place? ~ Black Press

L OCALLY G LOBAL

The news of 2013 made us both laugh and cry No doubt 2013 was a fascinating roller-coaster year of news stories, tragic events, and political dilemmas. Back in Februar y we were watching the skies as Asteroid 2012 DA14 took a close swing by Earth. What made the event unique was that the asteroid’s flyby was the closest ever-predicted Earth approach of an object this size. And that was just days before the 19-metre meteorite strike in Chelyabinsk, Russia. All those rocks spinning so close to Earth took on a whole new meaning not to mention some thoughts about preventive management. The May election saw Christy Clark’s government back in power much to the stunning surprise of everyone after pollsters predicted the Liberal party would go up in flames. Not without some angst, Clark he lost her own Vancouver-Point Grey seat but

solved that issue with a successful by-election, grabbing the safe Liberal seat of Westside-Kelowna. The year made us smile. In London, Kate (Duchess of Cambridge) gave bir th to baby George, adding to the cluster of princes-in-waiting for their time on the throne. Between princes Charles, William Margaret and the new little EVANS George, there’s close to another century of assured British monarchy. And we smiled with admiration at courageous Malala Yousafzai, the (then) 14-year-old shot in the head by the Taliban in Pakistan. They were attempting to silence her opposition to girls being denied an education. She

survived, took her message to a global level and this fall was a contender for the Nobel Peace Prize. But we cried. Remember the tragedies of the Boston marathon in April, the July train tragedy at Lac Megantic, Quebec, the horrendous account of the African rock python that strangled two young boys in Cambellton, New Brunswick, and the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Politics kept us focused, the most glaring topic of which has been the Senate scandal, the removal of senators Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau, Nigel Wright and the infamous $90,000 cheque, and the unravelling of the influence of the PM’s office. Then there was the issue of Harper’s tight control and his maddening policy of muzzling scientists, many of whom

have come forward to express frustration that their research findings are blocked from public access when they are out of step with government policies on environmental protection, climate change, or oil sands development. Speaking of bitumen oil and B.C.’s pipeline future, that whole debacle took a major step forward (or backward for some?) this month with the National Energy Board joint review panel approving Enbridge’s $6.5 billion Northern Gateway Pipeline, but with 209 conditions. It’s all conditional on the federal government’s final approval but you can bet Harper’s reaching for his rubber stamp. Albertans are of course delighted. That land-locked province is desperate to find export pathways for its oil. But folks in B.C. are pretty uncomfortable. We’ll take the brunt of the risk for

pipeline oil spills either on land or on the coast where a major spill into marine waters would be absolutely devastating. The bitter argument has always pitched protection of the environment against potential for employment. Pipelines and power politics will remain high profile and become a 2015 election issue for sure. So too will climate change keep conversations lively. Arctic melt, extremes of droughts and floods (remember southern Alberta?) continue the trend of warmer and dryer times. According to Roger Pannett, volunteer weather observer for Environment Canada “With fall mean temperatures at 11.59 C (0.69 C above normal), it was the mildest September to November period in 15 years.” No doubt 2014 will have much more of the above in store.

The Chilliwack

Progress

Right idea, wrong location Recycling is a good thing, and nothing is more important to recycle than hazardous material like mercury and PCBs. We clearly need facilities such as the one proposed for Chilliwack, but the site chosen has generated a groundswell of opposition for good reason. I drove to the site to take a look for myself on Tuesday morning. It is a bermed-off wetland, a stone’s throw from the Fraser River, drained by a stream and pump station discharging

water into an adjacent Wildlife Management Area. All the surrounding lands are higher, meaning that water is continually draining into the site. The berm will apparently keep overland floods out during the Fraser freshet, but the water will seep under them through the gravelly soils requiring continuous pumping to keep it dry. Why would we site a facility handling some of the most toxic materials our society produces in such a place? Any spill will

seep into the ground and be pumped off site into sensitive wetlands and the Fraser River. The facility itself may be built to a high standard, but the material must still be transported to and from it. Accidents will happen eventually. City council did not think this one through and their failure to consult with the community allowed their error to go unchecked. This facility needs to be on higher ground.

The entire Chilliwack Chiefs organization – players, coaches, management and volunteers – want to say thank you to our great fans who continue to support their team. We are all aware that the cycle of BCHL hockey means we will have some tough years – and this year is one of them – but that never deters the enthusiasm of our

loyal fans who care that Chiefs hockey is Chilliwack’s team. And we all appreciate that every player gives his best effort every night. Also, we enthusiastically wish all our supporters – fans and sponsors alike – a very Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season. We are excited again to give our fans a chance on Sunday, December

Community thanked for helping spread a little warmth The Chilliwack Common Threads Knitting Circle would like to thank our community for making our hat project a great success this year. We always hope to connect with other crafters, and to use our warm woolies to make a difference in the lives of others in our area. Because of The Progress article, and the generous donations of many knitters and crocheters from the Chilliwack area, we were able to collect almost 300 hats to give to those who are struggling this Christmas season. The gift of a handmade item will hopefully make them remember that they are not forgotten. Our goal to have one hat for each guest at the Salvation Army Christmas dinner was met on time. Hats were also shared with Teen Challenge, Central Gateway, Meadow Rose, Ruth and Naomi’s, the Lions, and Chilliwack Community Services. It is a pleasure to make big plans, to share our passion for knitting, and to be blessed to live in such a warm and caring city. Angie McDermid

Happy New Year! We have what you need to make it Henkell Trocken special.

Powerful reminder When the power recently went off, I realized how dependent we all are on technologies like electricity. Without electricity, the lifestyles we have would not be possible. Our everyday lives would not be possible without technologies like electricity and the electric light bulb. What did people do before Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb almost 140 years ago. Before electricity, people went to bed early and arose at dawn. They could only read at night with coal oil lamps or candles. In 1935, Agassiz had an ice storm that shut down the power for six weeks in the village. In those days, everyone heated their homes on wood and coal furnaces and cooked on wood and coal stoves. Clearly, we should not take our electricity for granted. When the power went off, I was cooking supper. Luckily, I had candles for light, until the power went on an hour later. My only inconvenience was to eat supper one hour later. We should all thank the brave and hardy linemen who repaired the lines in fierce winds and freezing temperatures.

Bringing early French immersion to the Chilliwack school district was akin to a tug-of-war. After two years of heavy advocacy from a group of parents desperately wanting their children to grow up learning French in school, the Chilliwack board of education voted against early French immersion (EFI) in April of this year. Only to have school trustee Silvia Dyck do a complete about-face less than a month later. Dyck, who initially voted against the program, suggested the school district free up $600,000 from the reserve to fund the first year of the program – a suggestion that was met with open arms. EFI was approved in June with only trustee Barry Neufeld in opposition. Parents were thrilled. “I’m excited, I’m ecstatic,” said Chilliwack parent Travis Forstbauer, who’s been leading the charge for EFI from the start. “They wanted our full support. Well, they do have our full support.” After reviewing several locations, including rebranding A.D. Rundle into a kindergarten to Grade 9 school, or implementing EFI into a school of its own at the old, now vacant, Rosedale elementary site, the district chose Cheam elementary, one of the few elementary schools in the district with available space.

my community is a healthy community...

Having been involved in the agriculture industry most of our lives has provided my wife and I with the privilege of raising four children on a farm. We have enjoyed the opportunity to involve our kids in a lot of physical activity which is one part of a healthy lifestyle. The Chilliwack Hospital and Health Care Foundation promotes a well-balanced healthy life choices philosophy which is why we whole heartedly support them. CHHCF is doing outstanding work in partnering with different organizations to help educate individuals about healthy eating and exercise. Now that we have four grandchildren, we are very much aware of the need to direct children away from the video screen and couch, which is why we are excited to see the Foundation so involved in our schools. We want to encourage the citizens of Chilliwack to donate to the Chilliwack Hospital & Health Care Foundation to ensure that they remain successful in convincing everyone to make healthy lifestyle choices.”

Chilliwack says goodbye to its beloved gardens It’s been painful for Chilliwack to watch Minter Gardens close its doors for good. It was a huge part of Chilliwack, but revenues never rebounded after the global recession. Minter Gardens was done in by a combination of declining tourism and climate change. The Minter family announced last summer plans to close the doors of the sprawling 32-acre show gardens site at the foot of Mt. Cheam in Rosedale in October. They had mixed feelings about it, but decided to keep the store on Young Road open. “Minter Gardens has been a huge part of our lives,” said Brian Minter. It was “difficult” to make the final decision. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime dream to create one of the most beautiful gardens in the world. Few people have the opportunity to live out their dreams so we consider ourselves truly blessed.” Minter Gardens closed on Monday,

October 14, 2013. The garden decision did not affect the Country Garden Store location on Young Road in Chilliwack. Since opening in 1980, the gardens became a huge international destination site for horticultural fans. “However, in more recent years, the attraction has felt the pressure of declining tourism and a changing climate that offers up more cold, rainy days than the abundantly sunny ones that attract visitors to the grounds,” read the press release of the closure announcement. “Together, these factors have significantly impacted the long-term viability of operating an outdoor destination garden.” Update: The Minters are working on the next steps, exploring options where it could be redeveloped into an environment and community friendly way to make the “best use” of the natural setting and landscape features.

Chilliwack mourns the loss of Dorothy Kostrzewa She had a smile that could light up a room. The death of city councillor Dorothy Kostrzewa in January was widely mourned by many in her beloved community of Chilliwack. Born August 17, 1928 as the youngest of eight children in the Chung family, Kostrzewa was remembered for her generous warmth, enthusiasm, and fierce dedication to her community. Recognized as a trailblazer and an inspiration for women everywhere, she was the first Chinese-Canadian woman to take political office in Canada in 1971 when elected to sit on Chilliwack city council. She served as a Chilliwack councillor for an impressive 31 years, was awarded UBCM’s long service award for 25 years. Kostrzewa worked in accounting at the Chilliwack General Hospital before entering city politics. Her family survived the Fraser River flood of 1948, and stories make it clear she came by her hard-working and tenacious nature, honestly. Dorothy used to tell the story herself of how she and her siblings used

a raft to dive down to retrieve fruits and vegetables from a submerged and flooded garden during the Flood of ‘48. She enjoyed serving the community, and was a champion of many municipal projects from the Chilliwack library, to the Chilliwack Museum, the Cultural Centre and the Piper Richardson statue. “It always amazed me that she led such an active political life but gathered absolutely no enemies, which can’t be said for everyone else,” former mayor Clint Hames said. “I think people acknowledged the fact that she was so sincere, and honest and willing to put the community first.”

She earned the Order of Chilliwack, was named Woman of the Year, and awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from UFV in 2009 for outstanding community service. In 2006 Kostrzewa was named one of the 100 Chinese Canadians making a difference in B.C. Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz called Kostrzewa a genuine “inspiration” who always treated everyone the same. “She treated everyone equally, whether they were rich or poor, brilliant or not. That’s the hallmark of a good politician. Gaetz wrote on the Facebook page: “Rest in peace, grand lady. You are forever loved.” jfeinberg@theprogress.com

Honda’s contemporary on a dying breed 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6 It’s fascinating to watch trends in the auto industry play out over time. Some changes happen quickly, with one manufacturer coming out with a feature, then the rest of the industry following suit. Backup cameras would be a good example of this. Other trends are much slower, changing because of demographic fluctuations. One example of a slow-moving trend is the two-door coupe falling out of favour and its replacement by sedans and crossovers. This trend is greatly affected by baby boomers getting older and buying more for practical reason, rather than styling. In the 1980s, and even the beginning of the 90s, there were plenty of coupes to choose from and they sold well. But where are the Honda Prelude, Toyota Celica, Pontiac Sunfire and Ford Probe coupes? Now gone and many not replaced with newer models. I’m thrilled to report that there are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6. Looks The Accord Coupe is based on the all-new Accord sedan that has been selling very well for Honda. In fact, it won the Canadian Car of the Year this year as decided by the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada. Honda has done a good job of updating this big coupe with a more modern twist. Sold in three configurations from the base EX to the EX-L Navi (L stand for leather and navi is self-explanatory),

which are both 4-cylinder way the radio stores and equipped models. The top retrieves pre-set radio trim is the EX-L Navi with stations. It took a long V6. This top trim level is the time to set the stereo model seen here: it comes up and having to go with LED projector headback and forth between lamps, 18-inch wheels and different screens is not duel chrome exhaust tips. If you like the idea that intuitive. The rest of The 4-cylinder equipped the dash is large, with big models come with halogen of a smart looking car cup holder and plenty of headlamps and 17-inch storage areas. that is well equipped alloy wheels. The EX-L that Honda is bucking, with this Accord is $30,100 for the leather and navi and Coupe, is the inclusion of a 6-speed the V6 premium is $35,500. Not an manual transmission and V6 engine. The inexpensive car but most are very well latest movement is to turbo or superequipped. charged 4-cylinder engines to replace V6

Inside It’s a big and comfortable coupe. The back seat is actually usable for adults and the front seats are very comfortable. The trunk is huge and the back seat folds for extra long items but the seats do not split and fold, plus the opening to the back seat is small. Standard feature on all Accord models is a backup camera and heated seats. Honda, in my opinion, has raised the bar in the mid-sized category and produced the nicest dash I have seen in this class. There are two screens in the centre console, one for the navigation unit and the other for the radio. They are framed in beautiful, high quality satin metal, chrome and soft touch materials. One area that could be improved is the

power plants and duel clutch automatic transmission in favour of a manual. I’m glad that Honda still offers this layout; it shows they are serious about being a true enthusiast’s car company. Granted, most buyers will get the very good 6-speed automatic transmission with the 3.5L V6, but with 278hp and 252 lb.ft. of torque it will be a very lively car in either configuration. The manual is a joy to use and it is like a throwback to drive a V6 equipped manual car. The 4-cylinder models have 185hp from a direct injection 2.4L engine and either a manual transmission or continuously variable transmission (CVT) for added fuel savings. The CVT is capable of 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.7L on the highway. The

V6 uses more at 10.0L/100km in the city and 6.1L on the highway. If you like the idea of a smart looking car that is well equipped and powerful, you might want to move on an Accord Coupe V6 before it follows the latest trend.

The 2014 Toyota Tundra has deep roots in the Wild, Wild West. The 1794 Edition is a tribute to the ranch, founded in the year 1794, on which the Tundra plant is located in San Antonio, Texas. In 2002, Toyota began the search for a US facility to build the second generation Toyota Tundra. The 2,000-acre ranch site was acquired and ground breaking took place Oct 17, 2003. Just like the ranch it replaced, hard work and dedication prevailed bringing production numbers up to 200,000 units. On September 18, 2013, the one-millionth The ride was a truck, a Sunset Bronze Mica colored, 1794 Edition Tundra, perfect combination rolled out. of on-road comfort This truck has a completely and off-road new body design with an aggressive grille that extends toughness. from the bumper to the raised Ian Harwood hood. The fender flares are larger and more defined, and the tailgate has Tundra stamped into the sheet metal. The top of the line Western themed 1794 Edition comes with a unique chrome grille and chrome and silver bumper. It’s almost like a large belt buckle! The inside screams Country music with its exclusive premium saddle tan brown leather seats with embossed and suede accents. Soft-touch materials are found on the center console, the front and rear door trim, and the instrument panel. Rich maple wood-grain covers the steering wheel, dash and shifter. Big improvement to the back seat of the Double Cab and Crew Max where a 60/40 split bench flips up with a one handed latch to allow more cargo space. The Tundra is equipped with Toyota’s advanced display audio system with AM/FM Radio, CD, MP3/WMA capability, USB and auxiliary input, and voice recognition. It also includes standard Bluetooth and an integrated backup camera. A SR model has a 6.1-inch display, while the SR5, Limited and Platinum models feature a 7-inch display with integrated Sirius XM Satellite Radio. Two engines available, depending on the model you choose. The 4.6 L i-force V8 that puts out 310 horsepower and 327 lb ft of torque and the 5.7 L i-force V8 with 32 valve dual overhead cam engine that generates 381 horsepower and 410 lb ft of torque. Both motors are connected to a 6 speed automatic transmission with sequential shift mode. Fuel economy numbers are; 5.7 L: 14.2/10.5 L/100 km (city/highway) 4.6 L: 11.0/13.6 L/100 km (city/highway) Driver and front passenger airbags, roll-sensing, head/side curtain and front mounted side airbags, and the first 1/2 ton pickup to include driver and front passenger knee airbags. Toyota’s star safety system includes electronic brake force distribution, smart stop technology, anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control, and active traction control. The side mirrors have the blind spot monitor system that detects a vehicle in your blind spot. The ride was a perfect combination of on-road comfort and off-road toughness. The truck has exceptional steering response and firm enough not to nose dive in the corners. The seats are spacious and very comfortable; I compare it to a living room couch with seat belts. It has a very quiet cabin, which I found to be true with the previous model, with very little road noise. I am happy they continued with the larger oversized buttons KIA Sportage and2012 knobs, which you can operate while wearing gloves. With the popularity $ of the Tundra growing, I can easily see the twomillionth truck roll out before the next design change. Subaru Forester, 2009 to 2012

The reliable Subaru Forester is a very impressive blend of utility, comfort, handling and fuel efficiency in a compact package.

‘‘

Bob McHugh

A redesigned third-generation Subaru Forester was an early 2009 model year release. A new look, better performance, enhanced safety features and more interior space were all achieved without drastic changes to the exterior dimensions of this popular compact utility vehicle. A “Boxer type engine, with horizontally opposed cylinders (like a Porsche engine), and a symmetrical all-wheeldrive system distinguish a Subaru, as a Subaru. Forester has an excellent history of mechanical dependability and the Subaru essentials are packaged with a practical, utilitarian body. Compared to the previous generation Forester, the ’09 came with a new chassis with a wider track and a longer wheelbase (by 9 cm), plus a new double wishbone rear suspension. The structural changes also yielded extra cargo space and more rear passenger head and legroom. The single overhead camshaft base engine can produce 170-horsepower and fuel economy is rated at 10.6/7.5 L/100 km (city/highway). While reliable, it’s no rocket and flat-out acceleration to 100 km/hour takes more than 10 seconds. Agile handling does help compensate for tame straight-line speed. A turbocharged variant has twin-camshafts and can produce 224-horsepower. However, it likes premium fuel and consumes 10.9/8.3 L/100 km (city/highway). Manual transmission models have an electronic “hill holder feature. When stopped on an incline this feature delays release of the foot brake to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward and gives the driver more time to achieve a smooth take-off. The automatic option was a conventional four-speed.

Charging ahead: with plug in hybrids and all-electric cars The future of cars may be electric but do not expect 2014 to be the dawn of the new age. In fact, I predict there’s a long road ahead for manufacturers trying to woo the driving

public into buying a car with a chord attached. Throw in the sales numbers for all-electric cars, plug-in hybrids and gas-battery hybrids and they don’t come anywhere near five percent

of total vehicle sales. The commercial conundrum is that these (more) ecofriendly vehicles come with a premium sticker price beyond most folks and the only way to bring them in range is to

sell many more! Most provincial governments have incentive rebates for those that make a green choice. While successful to a degree, they alone are going to turn us all on.

If gas prices soar then some more buyers will go the hybrid route but that said there are an awful lot of four-cylinder vehicles out there that are remarkably economical on gas. Let’s get our heads out

of the dark clouds and accept that economy of purchase and operation are what drives most sales. I am not an electric car naysayer, far from it, but we have to recognize that much Keith Morgan

12/13f CV27

needs to happen before the majority buy into this future. Sticker price is one thing but the single biggest challenge has to be the slow pace of infrastructure to fast-charge cars, whose batteries have run down mid-journey. ‘Range anxiety’ is a major mental obstacle for those with the resources to contemplate the purchase of an all-electric car such as the Nissan Leaf or Mitsubishi iMIEV. For that reason, it seems likely that the likes of the Chevrolet VOLT will enjoy more sales success as a main means of transport because an onboard gas-powered generator is ready to kick in to recharge the battery when the juice runs out. The plug-in hybrid, which combines the pulling power of a gas engine and electric motor is the early winner of people’s greentinged hearts. But back to the thorny issue of infrastructure. Many advocates want government to play a lead role but with all the demands made on the public pure that’s a dead end street. Maybe the tax incentives they can offer will encourage the private sector. For instance, the Canadian company Sun Country Highway has announced plans for a charging station network along the length of the Trans-Canada Highway. Other companies operating alongside major highways are extracting planning concessions from local government by installing recharging points. Hats off to BMW and its holistic approach. The German giant is collaborating with small tech companies, who will work with customers to make sure their homes don’t require a major power refit just to own one of the new i3s. And, as Dr. Ian Robertson, a BMW management board member, told me at the LA Auto Show recently there are many other power opportunities right in front our eyes. Urban areas are awash with street lights, which could be used as a source for curbside recharging. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

“The kids are still riding the high, and so is staff,” said Jones. Still, the old school memories are not forgotten. In March, a HelloGoodbye Reunion was held for CSS alumni going back to 1950. More than 5,000 former staff and students toured the old building, poring over yearbooks and grad class photos. Many of the photos taken from those yearbooks and the walls of the old school are now showcased in a mural that takes up the entire wall of the new school’s Alumni Hall. Three touchscreens also feature the alumni grad class photos. “As far as I know, we’re the first school to do this,” said Jones, a 1975 CSS graduate. “And already, I’ve had a number of inquiries from other new schools wanting to see what we’ve done.” In addition to Chilliwack secondary, Fraser Valley Distance Education is also facilitated in the new building. (FVDES moved in last week.) As well, several community groups including Ministry of Children and Family, Xyolhemeylh, Elder’s College, United Way, and YMCA have taken up home there. “We are anticipating in time this building will go seven days a week, 12 hours a day,” said Jones.

The only thing now needing to be complete is the 150-stall parking lot that, due to inclement weather, was about 10 days behind schedule. The lot and bus loop at the south end of the school is expected to be ready for use by the second week of January. The official grandopening of the new school is Feb. 28.

parent and PAC president Corey Neyrinck; the retired school teacher Harold Schmidt; the actor Rob Stelmaschuk; and the political heavy weights Ben Besler and Dan Coulter. It was the race between Coulter’s leftwing side and Besler’s right-wing side that was most heated, mostly coming from those on the sidelines than the candidates themselves. For the month leading up to the byelection, social media sites lit up with back-and-forth between Coulter and Besler supporters. However, come election day, only 2.3 per cent of Chilliwack’s voting population cast a ballot. In the end, Coulter finished with the win. But the celebration started too early. Coulter was prematurely sworn into office the Tuesday following the byelection. The board was notified by the City one week later it had erred, which left Coulter on the sidelines for what would have been his first full meeting as a school trustee. According to legislation, trustees can’t be sworn in until the recount period has passed. But the City, too, had erred; Coulter could have been properly sworn in at the Dec. 10 public board meeting as that would have surpassed the recount period. Coulter wasn’t phased by the mishap. “It’s one meeting,” he said. “I’ll be sitting in on a lot of meetings.” Coulter was officially sworn into office on Dec. 13. His first full public board meeting will be Jan. 21. kbartel@theprogress.com twitter.com/schoolscribe33

Falcons and Storm in New Years Eve showdown Eric J. Welsh, The Progress

Josh Matzek (left), Marissa Ryckman (middle) and Jason Sandhu are three organizers of the Chilliwack versus Sardis hockey game, taking place on New Year’s Eve. ERIC J. WELSH/ PROGRESS

Warriors take title

Evidence that female hockey is alive and well in Chilliwack came Dec. 13-15 as the midget Warriors won the Penticton Fire on Ice tournament. A dominant performance saw the Warriors post four straight shutouts. They demolished Chase 9-0 and Kamloops 7-0, with MVP perfor-

mances from Taylor Allenby and Kristy Ricard. Maddi Krulicki earned player of the game honours in the third game, against Kelowna. Krulicki drew a boarding call, and scored on the ensuing power play as her team won 3-0. The Warriors faced Kelowna again in the title game, winning 2-0. Angelique Basson iced the win with an empty net goal. Netminder and team captain Taegan Ackland-Gaetz recorded all four shutouts and was named player of the game in the final.

A hockey rivalry is renewed New Years Eve as Chilliwack secondary school takes on Sardis at Twin Rinks. Organized by Josh Matzek, Jason Sandhu, Marissa Ryckman and Brock Padgham, this year’s game looks to piggy-back on the success of last year’s. Three students took on this project in 2012, resurrecting a rivalry that was, once upon a time, one of the fiercest in local high school sports. Last year’s game saw CSS rout Sardis 4-1. Josh Matzek played on the winning side. “It wasn’t really rough rough, but it got a little gritty,” said Matzek, a goalie by trade. “It was intense to play in, and both sides felt a strong urge to win.” Ryckman watched from the stands, enjoying the electric atmosphere. “One side of the stands was Sardis and the other was CSS, and everyone dressed up in their school’s colours,” said Ryckman. “It was fun, but Sardis was more cheerful than Chilliwack. They were just louder, but we’re hoping that changes this year.” Fueled by pride in

their shiny new school, Ryckman thinks the CSS cheering section will bring the noise this year. “There’s always been a big rivalry between the two schools and it’s always a lot of fun,” she said. “And the new school has really added to the spirit.” Puck drop is 4 p.m. and ticket pre-sales have been going well. There were no pre-sales last year, but Twin Rinks was still packed to the rafters. One difference this year will be the ability to take debit at the door. Matzek’s dad owns Ricky’s Restaurant and he’s been granted access to a mobile debit machine. Tickets are $7 apiece. The four CSS students are doing this as part of Matthew Ferris’s entrepreneurship class. Other groups are doing different things — including hanging Christmas lights and selling Christmas baskets. Thanks to this project, the hockey organizers have learned how

much goes into organizing even a small-scale event. “We’ve had to book the ice, get uniforms, get insurance for the players and arrange for security,” Sandhu said. “The security is mostly our parents, just getting them at the doors to make sure no one’s sneaking in.” “ Wa i v e r forms have to be signed and referees have to be booked,” M a t z e k added. “We’ve got to come up with teams for both sides, and then we’ve got to get word out to get as big of a crowd as possible.” In any good rivalry, the chirping will be key. With bragging rights from last year’s game, and a strong roster for this year’s, Matzek feels the trash-talk will take care of itself. “We’ll get up a couple goals and let the scoreboard do the talking,” he said. “The Storm always takes out the birds, right?” Sandhu added with a grin. A win would be wonderful, but there’s another reward waiting

if these guys do things right. They get to keep any profits from the event. Last year’s raked in roughly $2,500. After costs, the two organizers split $2,000 between them. A similar return would let the CSS four plan a nice little grad trip next spring. They’re unanimously in favour of Mexico. “Whatever happens it’s been a great learning experience and hopefully we can have a great grad trip with all of our friends,” Padgham said. “Puerto Vallarata maybe. Cancun? Not sure where.” The biggest benefit of all goes well beyond dollars and cents, with the carrying on of a burgeoning tradition. “If we didn’t do this it probably wouldn’t have gotten done and the tradition wouldn’t carry on,” Matzek explained. “We’ve got some younger guys on our team this year, and we’re hoping they’ll carry it on next year. We want to make it fun enough where they want to do it again.” Posters have been hung up all over town wherever teenagers congregate. Info is also available online. Search ‘Chilliwack versus Sardis Hockey Game’ to get full details on Facebook.

Chiefs face Eagles in must-win games

The Chilliwack Chiefs come out of the Christmas break to face the Surrey Eagles in a crucial home-andhome this weekend. The Chiefs are in Surrey Saturday and host the Eagles Sunday (5 p.m.), needing to make up a ton of ground if they have any playoff aspirations.

Entering the Christmas break, the Chiefs found themselves 14 points behind their Mainland division rivals, with Surrey holding one game in hand. In a pre-Christmas article, head coach Har vey Smyl said he wasn’t ready to wave the white towel yet, pointing out the schedule and the fact Chilliwack faces Surrey six more times. But if his team can’t narrow the gap in head-to-head play this weekend, even the ever-optimistic bench boss would have to reevaluate.

The Chiefs should be feeling good about themselves after a bizarre game to end the pre-Christmas schedule. Chilliwack hosted the Trail Smoke Eaters Dec. 21, coming away with a 13-5 win. NOT a misprint. 13-5. The team equaled a franchise mark for goals in a game, wearing out the goal-horn at Prospera Centre. Chilliwack led 7-1 after one period, setting a franchise mark for goals in a period. Mathieu Tibbet and Ben Butcher had two apiece with Jaret

Babych, Andrew Silard and Blake Gober picking up singles. Gober’s was on a penalty shot. Trail’s starting netminder, Adam Todd, was yanked twice before the game was half over. He surrendered the first five goals before giving way to backup Kai McDonald. Trail coach Nick Deschenes put him back in to start the second period, but yanked him again after the Chiefs scored two goals on two shots. Tibbet had two more in the second period with Zach Diamantoni

and Jake Hand also lighting the lamp. Austin and Mitch Plevy had third period goals. Mitch’s was his first BCHL goal, with his big brother drawing the only assist. The Chiefs come into this weekend with a record of 8-26-1-2. The Eagles are 16-191-0. For all of their troubles, the Chiefs are 2-1 against Surrey this year. The Chiefs beat them 3-2 in October and split a pair of November games, losing 7-6 and winning 6-4. See bchl.ca for more info.

● The Sardis senior boys basketball team made a run at sports story of the year with a fantastic season. The Falcons advanced to the provincial basketball tournament and finished eighth overall. Stars Hayden Lejeune and Eric Rogers fueled the best high school basketball season in recent memory, with teammate Cam Servatius turning in a breakout season. There is a very good chance the Falcons become the 2014 Sports Story of the Year. A torrid start to the season has them 1-0 in league play and 13-0 overall. They sit seventh in the most recent AAAA rankings but face a tough schedule in January. A titanic test awaits as the Falcons face two Abbotsford powerhouses. Sardis visits W.J. Whatever the 2014 GW Graham Grizzlies end up doing, they’ll have a tough act to follow after 2013’s sports story of the year. The junior varsity Grizzlies were an easy choice after a historymaking season that saw them win Chilliwack’s first ever provincial football title. The Grizzlies beat the Ballenas Whalers 23-20 in a thrilling final under the big top at BC Place Stadium, giving the school its first provincial title in any sport. In its first year, GWG’s varsity team didn’t fare as well, missing the playoffs after a 2-5 season. But there’s reason to believe they could be 2014’s story of the year. Several members of the junior team, including star quarterback Jordan Breuker, will graduate to the senior squad, and the infusion of talent could make next year’s Grizzlies a AA contender.

Laufenberg, Paula Maria (nee Stommel)

Life... Love... Loss... Legacy To Place Your Message call 604.853.1144

Passed away peacefuly on December 17, 2013 in Chilliwack, B.C.. She was predeceased by her husband, Hans, on January 6, 2013. Paula was born on January 11, 1922 in Siegburg, Germany. After immigrating to Canada in 1959, Hans and Paula settled in Victoria, B.C. to start a new life. With Han’s building skills and Paula’s training as a seamstress they created a warm and loving home for their family. They sang in several choirs, both in Victoria and later the German choir in Vancouver’s Alpen Club. Over the years they took many trips through B.C., the US, Europe, Australia, Hawaii and cruises. Paula was a woman of inner strength, calm demeanor and dignity. She will be greatly missed by her family, daughters Annelene(Otto), Wilfriede(John) and Astrid(Michael), Grandchildren Michelle, Denise, Andria, Jason, Shaun, Jasmine, Andrew, Danielle and nine Greatgrandchildren. The family would like the thank Dr. John Hamilton and the staff at the Bradley Center for the care and respect given to their mother. Service to be held at St. Mary’s church in Chilliwack on January 4, 2014 at 1:00. Henderson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. 604-792-1344. On line condolences may be left at www.hendersonsfunerals.com

Lois adored and loved unconditionally her many nieces and nephews. She had a place in her heart for every single one of them. Her many dragon boat friends on Harrison and Cultus Lakes will remember her wonderful smile and glowing presence and her fierce determination as she sat at the front of the boat urging her paddlers to work just a little bit harder because “they were in a race”. Lois lived her life with love and joy and all of those who were around her will carry that love and joy with them forever.
