Hundreds packed Surrey City Hall to speak to Gateway’s proposal for 168 Street and 10 Avenue, a process that took two nights and 11 hours. Representatives from the Clover-

dale Chamber of Commerce and Cloverdale BIA spoke in favour of the proposal, after initially voicing concerns that it would draw business away from Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino. Their stance changed after meeting with B.C. Lottery Corp. and provincial government officials. When Surrey council splits 4-4 on whether to proceed, Mayor Dianne Watts casts the swing vote, killing the proposal.

Kindness is alive and well Most people walk away from someone who appears to be down on their luck. Not here in Cloverdale To the editor; In this day and age, the bulk of the news is about wars, gang killings and who wronged who. Faith in humanity can become quite thin when this is all you hear about, but here in Cloverdale there is kindness, concern and compassion for fellow man. Our father/grandfather was the recipient of these emotions. His name was Bill Leopold and he looked homeless walking around the community pushing his shopping cart in his dirty and tattered “work clothes”. He collected discarded bottles and cans to return for money towards his granddaughter’s college tuition, and he diligently combed the neighbourhood every day. The walking kept him healthy and strong, but the people he met along his travels enriched his soul. This story is not about Bill, who passed away on Dec. 22, 2013 at the age of 85, but about the kindness he experienced over his 12 years of collecting bottles. Most people walk away from someone who appears to be down on their luck, or don’t even see the unfortunate person to start with. Strangers assumed Bill was

homeless and they showed their compassion by giving him things like a cup of hot coffee, a Tim Horton’s card, dry food items,

money or clothes. He was offered hot meals and even actual homeless people offered to share what little they had. He would tell people he didn’t need these things and explained the bottles were for his granddaughter but many people didn’t believe him and wouldn’t allow him to refuse. So he said, “Thank you,” and the items he received were donated to help others who were in need. Bill made many friends over the years along his collection routes and felt an obligation to collect from his regular “customers” on specific days. People would save their bottles for him and worry if he didn’t show up on the scheduled day. He would talk of his friends but didn’t always know their names but through his description we would like to thank you all. Thanks Bob, Kim, Eva, the Scottish ladies, the man on the bottom corner apartment with the two dogs, and of course to our neighbours who all supported Bill’s cause. Thank you Cloverdale for being so compassionate and kind.

– Submitted by Bill’s family, who will be gathering to remember him this Friday.

Surrey School Board Chair Shawn Wilson at the proposed site of a new secondary school at 73 Avenue and 184 Street in North Clayton. In February, the provincial government announced it will commit $10.1 million towards the $16-million project, with the Surrey School District paying the rest.

sode said a rec centre makes sense for an area experiencing such unprecedented residential growth, adding she also asked staff to look at the feasibility of including a library in the plan. A group of community-minded people approached Rasode last fall, citing a desperate need for activities for local youth.

City ponies up for schools The Surrey School District says it will put up $5 million of its own money to get the ball rolling on two new schools and two school expansions in hopes the B.C. government will pay it back. “We owe it to our students and our parents to move quickly, said trustee Laurae McNally. Residents in fastgrowing neighbourhoods have been “incredibly frustrated” by school overcrowding, McNally said, adding it’s not longer an option to wait for the provincial government to dole out capital budgets. The money will be used to hire architects to start the design process for new secondary schools in Clayton and Grandview Heights, and additions for elementary schools in Cloverdale and Grandview.

will commit $10.5 million towards at $16.7 million school in north Clayton. The Surrey School District is paying for the remainder. The province has secured an 18-acre property at 73 Avenue and 184 Street for the school, expected to have a capacity of up to 1,200 students. Speaking at the funding announcement at the proposed site, Surrey School Board chair Shawn Wilson said it’s great news that means a great deal to the residents of Surrey.

MARCH Anti-theft initiative launched A new anti-crime initiative is launched in downtown Cloverdale, where the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association, Chamber

of Commerce and the RCMP are asking merchants to report suspicious activity as part of a business alert program being set up. The Heads Up! initiative will be initially restricted to the 200-plus members of the Cloverdale BIA, but it’s hoped to expand. The alert is in conjunction with Surrey RCMP’s District 4 office in Cloverdale. Tips are sent to Staff Sgt. Martin Blais, district commander, and shared with local businesses, giving them a “heads up to be on the look out. The initiative is a response to long-standing concerns from local merchants who have grown frustrated with opportunistic criminal activity, including fraudulent transactions, shoplifting and costly break-ins. “These offenders are well known by mer-

Read the panel on your pets food to see if any of these ingredients are listed. “Meat Mealâ€? – anonymous source that is actually a product rendered from tissue. The problem is that it is not from any specific animal and could contain spoiled grocery store meat, roadkill, dead, diseased or dying livestock. “Animal by-product mealâ€? – a dry rendered product of slaughterhouse waste. It’s the left-overs of a slaughtered animal and could contain feet, beaks, undeveloped eggs, etc. “Wheat, corn, corn gluten mealâ€? – or really any combination including these words. An inexpensive and controversial cereal grain that has no real proven nutritional value to your pet. It causes increased and unnecessary stool volume and can be the root of allergies and skin/bowel conditions that plague your furry family member. These are just some of the ingredients that should raise an alarm bell‌.if you are unsure or would like some help in choosing a food that meets a higher standard, come in and talk to us. There are great choices out there for every budget‌it

Going to a lender to ask for a mortgage can be a nerve-wracking experience when you’re not sure what to expect. Before you go looking for credit, take a few minutes to understand what lenders are looking for: the five “Cs of credit. How might you stack up in a lender’s analysis of Feisal Panjwani, AMP the five C’s of credit? Capacity: Be prepared to show a lender that you can afford your payments. The lender will look at your income from all sources, and compare that with your monthly financial obligations. Capital: Your down payment demonstrates that you can save and accumulate assets, and that you are more likely to do all you can to keep up with your mortgage payments. Collateral: This is the lender’s assurance that the mortgaged property is marketable and can be re-sold to recover the investment. Credit: Your habits in meeting your debt obligations will be evaluated. Do you consistently pay your debts on time? Character: Are you sufficiently trustworthy to meet your obligations? Your education and work experience will be factors, along with length of time at your current residence and job. Good communication is essential to credit success. You want the lender to see that you and your business are a good investment. Let us show you how!

Q: What can I expect from a is fitness or self defence. Although these are both great benefits of Taekwondo, the skills that will endure are dedication, confidence, perseverance, courtesy and respect. As the Karen Bennett student’s physical health improves so does their mental well being. Students become more confident as the training intensifies and they begin to see that working hard is fun and has great rewards. One part of our test to Black Belt is an endurance test. Once completed, the students realize that they are capable of much more than they imagined. They are able to push themselves farther than they ever have in the past. Years from now, it is not the forms and techniques that they learned that will endure, but the self confidence and commitment that they learned along their martial arts journey that will prevail and assist them with success in their future!

A: Provided interest rates stay where they are (and that is what the Edith Katronis Bank of Canada is forecasting) we will have a very steady year. Prices are a function of demand and this is coming from first-time buyers taking advantage of the lower rates and immigrants that arrive in Canada with funds to purchase resale homes. Traditionally our buyers for homes came from the townhouse condo market. As these properties appreciated the owners were able to move up to a single family home. Until townhouse prices rise significantly, this part of the market is very slow. This will hold back any great price appreciation for the year.

Feeling the squeeze Cramped school woes in North Cloverdale prompt a meeting between parents, residents, City of Surrey and Surrey school district officials. The meeting was organized by the Adams Road Parent Advisory Council, with the help of city councillor Barinder Rasode, who was one of the speakers at the meeting. “The speed of development in our area is outpacing the speed of community resources, including community centres, pools, libraries and parks,” said Jennifer Cocks, co-president of the school’s Parent Advisory Council. Residents and parents are also concerned about the rapid pace of development in the neighbourhood. “There are 130 new homes going in,” she said. “Why are we pushing ahead with development when there’s physically no room for them at school?” Adams Road’s school population has doubled to 430 students since it opened in 2011 and has 10 portables.

Falcon lands at Anthem

2014

B.C.’s former finance minister and longtime Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon is leaving politics for real estate. Falcon ended months of speculation when it was announced he’s going to work for Anthem Capital Corp., becoming executive vice-president May 16, two days after the provincial election. He represented Surrey-Cloverdale for 12 years, and served in a variety of highprofile cabinet positions. In 2011, he ran for the leadership of the B.C. Liberal Party after Gordon Campbell resigned, losing to premier Christy Clark. Anthem Capital Corp is a member of the Anthem Group of Properties, the Vancouver-based real estate developer behind such Surrey projects as Brick Yard Station, a shopping plaza in Cloverdale.

Stephanie Cadieux tops the polls in Surrey-Cloverdale on election night. She claims her new seat by a wide margin as part of a B.C. Liberal tidal wave that upended any predictions of an NDP majority. On May 14, the former MLA for SurreyPanorama claims 16,392 votes, or 60 per cent of the popular vote, putting her well ahead of challengers Harry Kooner of the NDP, with 8,120 votes (or 29 per cent), Conservative Howard Wu with 1,922 votes (7.04 per cent), and not affiliated candidate Matt Begley, in the rear with 862 votes (3.16 per cent). Former Langley City major Peter Fassbender won Surrey-Fleetwood for the Liberals, while Liberal incumbent Mary Polak beat out B.C. Conservative Party leader Jim Cummins in the riding of Langley.

former MLA, tourism minister, and community leader is remembered as a leader, mentor, friend and irrepressible champion for Surrey, and Cloverdale. Premier Christy Clark recalls his unparalleled love for his province and “incredible graciousness to everyone he met.” In June, more than 500 people, including a veritable who’s who of B.C. cabinet ministers, Surrey politicians, and an honour guard of pipers, turn out to the Cloverdale Rec Centre for a celebration of life that is as colourful as the man himself.

alongside Stowe and his family at a packed viewing party at Cactus Club Cafe was his former high school culinary arts instructor, Guy Ethier. “It’s because I took that course that I’m here today,” Stowe told Black Press. “I can’t thank him enough.”

All abord the Interurban again

After more than half a century and thousands of hours of volunteer effort, the dream to return a restored Interurban to the original line through Surrey comes true in Cloverdale. On June 23 the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society launches weekend passenger runs out of Cloverdale Station. Passengers crowd onto Car 1225, originally built in 1909, for the round trip to Sullivan Station. The entire operation is run by volunteers. – Compiled by Jennifer Lang
