Record numbers take Polar Bear Plunge
■ O VER T HE E DGE
Katie Bartel The Progress Lance Marais was thankful for several things as he plunged into Cultus Lake on New Year’s Day. Notably, that there wasn’t snow on the ground for his already cold, wet feet to freeze in following the dip. But more importantly, the number of fellow plungers around him. This year’s Polar Bear Plunge at Cultus Lake had roughly 120 participants diving into the frigid waters, and between 300 and 400 total people at the event. It was the most the annual plunge has seen in six years. “People wise, we had definitely at least double, probably triple the number from previous years,” said Marais, network and provincial outreach coordinator for BC Teen Challenge, organizers of the Polar Bear Plunge. “It was fantastic, it was unbelievable, it was so overwhelming.” It was exactly what BC Teen Challenge had hoped for. Six months ago, when organizers started putting together the event, they wanted to make it bigger than previous years. They wanted to attract more participants in hopes of creating more awareness in the community for their programs. BC Teen Challenge is a 12-month, residential, outreach program, with a men’s centre in Yarrow, for adults trapped in addiction. This year’s plunge raised approximately $3,300, which will be shared between the men’s centre in Yarrow and the women’s centre in Abbotsford. Of that, 92 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the centres. This was about growing the event and getting to know more people in the community. “I’d never seen half of the people who came out; they were strangers, people from our community,” said Marais. “I hope to see everyone again next year.” Participants were thanked with free parking, free bowls of chili, free hot dogs, and free mugs of coffee and hot chocolate.

Opposition continues over waste facility Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Opposition to a riverside waste recycling plant in Chilliwack continues in 2014, with an inaugural meeting of an ad hoc group set for Jan. 14. ACT Chilliwack will be a “platform for public engagement” on topics including the potentially toxic waste site, said organizers about plans for the meeting. Last month First Nations, environmental and sport fishing reps gathered near the Fraser River to express concerns about the proposal by Aevitas Inc. for a waste recycling and transfer station on Cannor Road to recycle hazardous materials like mercury and PCBs.

It was a unanimous decision by council on Dec. 3 to rezone property on the Cattermole Lands from its M4 heavy industrial designation, to M6 special industrial zone to allow the construction of a waste recycling plant. Mayor Sharon Gaetz stressed that Chilliwack specifically opted for the M6 ‘special industrial’ designation to give council the ability to introduce extra environmental restrictions and conditions they wouldn’t otherwise be able to impose. So far the ACT Chilliwack group has not publicized its meeting location, or invited local media or city officials, but the poster says they encourage “full transparency and thorough consultation.” They are still concerned about the
waste plant location, and the potential for toxic substances leaching into the river. “ACT Chilliwack is a citizens’ group in formation seeking people from the local community who want to do more than talk,” reads a poster that appeared on a Chilliwack-related Facebook page. “We are not a society or a club. We are individuals coming together, hoping to do more collaboratively than we can, individually,” it continues. Organizers say they will use a loose, informal and consensus-based approach. “We’re interested in creating a means for the people of this city to speak to issues which concern them in an organized, Continued: WASTE/ p4

FVRD aims to block waste incinerator permit renewal Province urged to make Metro resume testing of soil, crops Jeff Nagel Black Press If Metro Vancouver wants to build a new garbage incinerator it claims will be state-of-the-art it should first outfit the existing one with the best possible pollution scrubbing technology. That’s the position the Fraser Valley Regional District is taking in opposing the renewal of the operating certificate for Metro’s current Waste-To-Energy Facility in south Burnaby. The FVRD argues the proposed permit doesn’t go far enough in lowering the limit on allowed emissions toward international bestpractices levels already identified by the provincial government. FVRD board vice-chair Patricia
Ross said Metro has failed to improve emission controls as fast as it could have at the existing incinerator. “They could have upgraded it to the very best technology but they didn’t because they thought it was too expensive,” Ross said. “They could have and they should have. How are we to believe them when they say they will operate the next one at the best of standards?” The decision on renewing the permit will be made by the provincial environment ministry. Soil and vegetation tests for pollutants linked to the incinerator were only conducted for two years after it opened 25 years ago. The FVRD wants those tests reinstated to check contaminant levels it says could concentrate in crops, fish, livestock and people, noting much food is grown just downwind in Richmond and Delta. “It is not acceptable to assume that no impact has been had on
soil, vegetation, water, food products or public health without rigorous monitoring and evaluation to confirm,” the FVRD paper says. “The long-term impacts of the Burnaby incinerator, in operation since 1988, can and must now be evaluated in a detailed manner.” Ross also said Metro’s disclosed emissions are misleading because there are a variety of pollutants – including antimony, selenium and magnesium – that are not tested for because there’s no requirement to do so. “There’s a lot of junk coming out that they’re even telling you about – they’re not required to,” she said. “What they’re reporting they’re emitting and what they’re actually emitting are two very different things.” The FVRD’s response paper filed with the province lists 48 requested amendments to the proposed permit’s requirements, including calls for bolstered testing
on a range of front and improved disclosure. Ross said the province’s reaction will offer an early test of how seriously the government will take the air quality concerns of Fraser Valley residents in making an ultimate decision on whether Metro Vancouver can build a new wasteto-energy plant. Metro is currently in the midst of selecting potential sites for a new plant, which could be operational by 2018. A new plant would burn 370,000 tonnes of garbage per year, in addition to the 280,000 tonnes already burned in Burnaby. Ross was also critical of the “under the radar” permit renewal process. Neither the FVRD nor affected local municipalities were notified, she said, and FVRD staff scrambled to respond by a Dec. 21 deadline after learning of the 30-day comment period in early
December. Metro Vancouver board chair Greg Moore said the province has full control of the process. “We have continually upgraded the Burnaby facility and have plans for continuous improvements,” Moore said. The latest upgrade underway will reduce the plant’s nitrogen oxide emissions from 0.9 per cent of the region’s total to 0.4 per cent in 2014, he said. The plant’s emissions of lead, chromium, mercury and cadmium are each 0.1 per cent of the airshed’s total, Moore said, while emissions of dioxins, furans and fine particulate are “so low they are almost undetectable” at 0.001 per cent of the airshed total. The incinerator, which generates electricity to power 16,000 homes, is in line for another $20 million in further environmental upgrades over the next decade, he added.
E-Comm releases Top 10 absurd non-emergencies Jeff Nagel Black Press Do not dial 911 to ask for a morning wake-up call. Or to discipline your children. Or to ask permission to use the HOV lane to get to an important meeting. Those are a few fresh examples of jaw-droppingly inappropriate 911 calls made by Lower Mainland residents in 2013 that offer strong evidence some people are too dumb to possess a cellphone or at least discern what’s a real emergency. The list was released Monday by E-Comm and is just a taste of what staff regularly field at southwestern B.C.’s emergency communications centre. In the number one spot this year was a call E-Comm’s Matthew Collins received from a caller wanting to rent a fire truck to block off a street for a party. “My son won’t give me the remote control,” another caller reported as an emergency to a 911 call-taker. “Can an officer come over to tell my kids to go to bed?” asked another. E-Comm spokesperson Jody Robertson said people who make nuisance calls to 911 are tying up valuable resources for people with real life-and-death emergencies. “There are many documented cases of children as young as two and three years old properly making emergency calls,” she said. “Little ones seem to get it. Others among us seem to require a bit more help.” Robertson wasn’t able to say how many of the 2,500 daily emergency calls fall into the nuisance category but added far too many calls come in seeking information about power outages, what time it is, when to turn clocks back or about local or international events. “I think if you ask our staff they’d say it’s gotten worse,” she said. “It happens way too many times and it happens every single day.” Robertson said the one she found remarkable was the caller who asked for the OK to drive in the HOV lane because traffic was backed up and they were late for a meeting. calls tweeted regularly by E-Comm staff from @ EComm911_info. A huge problem for E-Comm remains pocket dials by cellphone users or calls otherwise made in error. About 100,000 of those calls come in each year or nearly 10 per cent of total volume. E-Comm recommends using keylocks, protective cases and not pre-programming 911 into phones to help cut down on the problem. Some people quickly hang up when they realize they dialed 911 by mistake. “That’s actually the worst thing you can do,” Robertson said, adding call takers must then make repeated attempts to call you back to make sure there’s no emergency. If the call came from a land line, she added, police will likely be dispatched to ensure you’re okay. Non-emergency calls – like reporting vandalism to your car – should go
through the 10-digit nonemergency police number. E-Comm’s top-ten 911 nuisance calls for 2013: 1. “I’d like to speak to someone about renting a fire truck to block off a street for a party.” 2. A caller phoned 911 to get their date’s contact information so they could confirm details of their plans. 3. A caller phoned 911 to report a missed newspaper delivery. 4. Caller asks 911 if they can get the ‘OK’ to drive in the HOV lane because “traffic is backed up and they are late for an important meeting.” 5. Caller dials 911 to activate voicemail on his cellphone. 6. “I threw my phone into the garbage can and can’t get it out.” 7. Caller dials 911 to ask for a morning wake-up call. 8. Caller dials 911 to ask how to call the operator. 9. “Can an officer come over to tell my kids to go to bed?” 10. “My son won’t give me the remote control.”

Chipping of Christmas trees set to begin The Progress At this point, Christmas trees in Chilliwack are done lighting up the season. Here are options for residents looking to have their holiday trees recycled in Chilliwack in the next week or so. Anyone with curbside waste collection can simply drop their Christmas tree at the
curb or in the alley on their regular garbage collection day, from Jan. 2-11. Folks are asked to ensure they’ve removed the tinsel, ornaments, stands and flocking from the evergreen trees before leaving them at the curb. Two trees will be picked up per residence. Woman escapes vehicle fire The new year ended badly for one Chilliwack motorist after her vehicle burst into flames just after noon on Dec. 31. Firefighters were quick to extinguish the blaze, but damage to the Hummer was extensive. Yale Road was shut down briefly near Chilliwack middle school as firefighters hosed down the vehicle. There were no reports of injuries. The driver of the vehicle was helped to safety by passersby.
One arrested in stabbing case A Tuesday morning stabbing has left one man in hospital and another in custody. The stabbing took place at 1:25 a.m. Tuesday morning near the 5800block of Vedder Road. RCMP Cpl. Cynthia Kershaw said the victim was lucky to not have any major organs damaged, but he’s being kept in hospital for observation. One man was arrested and RCMP are investigating.

to 4:30 p.m. Finally, for one day only, they can go to Minter Country Store to drop off their trees for chipping. It’s on Saturday, Jan. 4, and the service is being provided by RIM Tree Services, with every donation of two nonperishable items or cash to the local food bank. It runs from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. in the store parking lot on Young Road. Donations go to the Salvation Army Food Bank. More at mintergardens. com/cg_events. html#chip. Trees must be free of stands, tinsel, ornaments and plastic bags.

R AESIDE
A healthy new year After a season of over-indulging, many Canadians woke up Jan. 1 saying this is the year they get heart-healthy. That wake-up call to become more active and eat better can’t come a moment too soon, according to the Canadian Medial Association. The CMA’s latest report on the nation’s heart health says we’re not doing very well — in fact, we’re almost on life support. Across the nation, fewer than 10 per cent of Canadian adults meet the criteria for “ideal” cardiovascular health, which means most still don’t get enough exercise (at least 30 minutes of walking per day), and most don’t eat properly (consuming five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day). People are getting heavier and we see this everywhere, and in our own waistlines, which seem to expand with each passing year. But adults aren’t alone in risky health behaviours. According to the study, only about 20 per cent of kids between 12 and 19 years are making lifestyle choices to keep them healthy — including being active for an hour or more a day. Where is all this heading? The bad news is unless people’s habits change, there will be more incidences of diabetes, hypertension, cancer, heart attacks and stroke. If you think our hospitals are crowded now, imagine what the wards will be like a few years from now. The sad part is that many baby boomers are planning for long lives. Unless they make changes now, however, they will be sick or disabled for 10 of those years, according to a Heart and Stroke Foundation report released in 2013. Ironically, most boomers think they are healthy but in fact many are stressed, sedentary, eat poorly and drink too much alcohol. Could this be the year Canadians change those statistics and turn this unhealthy ship around? Pass the veggies while we think about it. ~ Black Press

It’s been another weather year for the record books Environment Canada issued its Top 10 weather events for 2013 and British Columbia made it to 10th place for all the best reasons - a perfect summer. But it was still a year of extremes. “With 2013 summer (July to September) mean temperatures at 19.56 degrees Celsius (2.33 degrees above normal) it was the hottest on record and the 13th consecutive summer with above normal mean temperatures, a trend never previously observed since Chilliwack temperature records started in 1895,” said Roger Pannett, volunteer weather obser ver for Environment Canada. “(Then) the passage of an active Pacific frontal system on Sept. 28 produced a record rainfall of 42.8 mm exceeding the previous record for the day of 41.1 mm in 1961.” The wind blew hard here but it sure howled at Estevan Point
where it gusted at 122 km/hour. The wind and rainfall event put the total for September at 148.9 per cent above normal. After the drenching September of 2010 (221.7 mm) this September was the second wettest in the past 41 years. Then in another swing of extremes, October rains were a mere 44 mm, 76 per Margaret cent below norEVANS mal which left the month the driest since 2002. According to Pannett, as at Dec. 30 the year’s precipitation was 19 per cent below normal and the year has been the driest since 2008. After 11 months of above normal mean temperatures, December was a degree cooler than normal, making it
the coolest December since 2009. The mean temperature for the year was some 1.l6 degrees above normal making it the warmest year since 2004. With the vastness of Canada, the variety of weather events is endless. At the top of the 2013 list is the Alberta super flood which washed across 25 per cent of the province and inundated Calgary. Then came Toronto’s raindrenching event in July while, in the west, farmers were enjoying bumper crops they only dreamed about. And that in itself was amazing given the very long (sevenmonth) winter that delayed seeding and soil warm-up. The rain that came did so at the right time and in the right amounts. Stats Can forecasted that farmers harvested a record 30.5 million tonnes of wheat last summer. The Red River threatened to flood, a cool northern summer slowed

Arctic sea ice melt while the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence saw 13 per cent more rain. Globally, the long, cold, snowy winter spread across the U.K., Eurasia and Russia. The severe cold weather in the U.K. resulted in spring being so late it delayed the return migration of birds and the germination of plants causing anxiety among farmers. Here in Canada this winter, prairie temperature and wind chill forecasts have touched -55 degrees. Together with Health Canada, Environment Canada is working on a new program to warn people when the weather is predicted to be dangerously cold even in the absence of wind. And conditions that produced Eastern Canada’s ice storm in December lead to falls, soft tissue injury and broken bones. Cur rently Environment Canada issues warnings when

temperature and wind speeds together dip to health-threatening thresholds. However, the new program will issue Extreme Cold Warnings based on plunging temperatures alone. People forget that Canada is actually the second coldest country in the world after Russia. At the other end of the scale, Australian meteorologists have devised new colour codes for the hottest readings. Temperatures over 50 degrees Celsius are shown in purple while those over 52 degrees are in pink. The 20122013 “Angry Summer” saw 123 weather records broken over 90 days. Then, on June 30, Death Valley, California, hit 54 degrees, the hottest June temperature ever recorded on Earth. National and global extreme weather events make Chilliwack’s weather pretty mild by comparison.

Lighting up Cultus Lake  I am writing to you as a resident of Richmond who had the pleasure of visiting Chilliwack in the last two days. I was fortunate to be taken for a walk in the evening beside Cultus Lake. The lighting display on the
trees was so beautiful I felt I must write to commend the city, the designers and the lighting people who made it all possible. It is truly a breathtaking display that embraces the spirit of the season. I intend to forward this letter to the city to extend my
thanks to all concerned. Sandra Lynn Smith and family P.S. Â Â We will return and bring friends to see the lights and the area.....
Editor’s Note: In fact, the light display was organized by local volunteers, with the support of local businesses and individuals.
Rising gas prices offer no holiday Knowing I would be doing lots of travelling over the holidays I chose to fill up my tank on the 23rd. As I live in Chilliwack I paid $1.149 per liter, not a bad price considering. The next day, doing some last minute errands I
noticed the prices had now jumped to $1.239 per liter. That is about 40 cents per imperial gallon. Hmmm, could this be because of a huge increase in the price of a barrel of oil? I think not. It seems to be a com-
plete greedy cash grab by the oil companies, knowing we all have lots of travelling to do over the holidays. I wonder out loud what response the oil companies would have if a reporter called to ask them why the huge increase. They
would all be frothing with eggnog coming out their nostrils. Could this be a scene from “How the Grinch stole Christmas. Shame on you big oil, have you no heart? Tom Duncan Chilliwack
Pipeline benefits worth the risk of a spill Some taxpayers are not thinking of the positive sides of what pipelines can do for them financially. If the pipelines do go ahead, large royalties will be paid to the B.C. government, which is really us. B.C. taxpayers could have a few options: eliminating the provincial sales tax or medical premiums or even receiving an
annual royalty cheque. In Alaska, the Alyeska pipeline has provided the average citizen an annual cheque of $1,108.45 a year for 30 years. It’s better than buying lottery tickets. Some people ask, what’s the risk of an oil spill, which is real. But these same people get up every morning and do not know what will happen to them.
Going on a vacation? What if the plane goes down? You might have a car accident. Some of us have jobs that can end in an accident. Our health can suddenly deteriorate. In summary, we all take chances every day. So why not take the benefits of the pipelines? Joe Sawchuk

Cancer survivor shares ‘the spice of life’ Katie Bartel The Progress Raj Bining’s hands are a whirlwind of activity, mixing chana flour, cumin, an assortment of vegetables and other spices into the bowl before her. She dips a spoon in for a taste; squints her eyes; wiggles her nose. “Needs more spice,” she says, a smile of satisfaction creeping across her face, teaching the secrets of Indian cuisine. Watching Bining – smiling as though she didn’t have a care in the world; playing out her own version of Guess How Much I Love You with her young, bilingual daughter; cooking her traditional Indian fare as though it were the most relaxing activity in the world – it’s hard to imagine the sickly woman she was not long ago. Two years ago Raj Bining was given two months to live. She had an aggressive brain tumour. Her doctors had exhausted all resources. But Bining refused to give up. She had two daughters, one just six months old – they, alone, were reason to live. When one doctor gave up, she went to another. She saw oncologists, specialists, naturopaths. She underwent numerous chemotherapy treatments, and when that failed, expensive alternative treatments not covered by medical. But when one doctor suggested she start taking turmeric pills, her eyes popped. “Why would I do that?” she asked. “I eat it all the time.” Turmeric, a bright yellow, pungent, Indian spice, contains curcumin, a powerhouse ingredient that’s been clinically proven to slow the progression of various cancer cells. And it’s not the only one. Several Indian spices contain

cancer-fighting qualities – fennel, saffron, cumin, cinnamon – all of which were common ingredients in Bining’s kitchen cupboards. Bining, now a Chilliwack resident, was born in a small village in India; she grew up with a mixture of Indian spices, masala, incorporated into everyday eating. When her doctor enlightened her on the health benefits of Indian spices, though, she wasn’t comfortable taking it in pill form. Instead, Bining immediately got on the phone with her mom, and requested an assortment of recipes from
her earliest eating memories. She also increased her intake of turmeric, now going through at least one cup a week. For more than a year, Bining has kept strict to a wholesome, healthy diet heavily featuring Indian spices. As of her last brain scan, the tumour had significantly shrunk. She’s now in remission. “I’m still alive,” she laughs. “I personally believe I was healed by these spices.” And now, Bining wants to help introduce Chilliwack to the magic of Indian cuisine.
www. CHILLIWACK chilliwackford .com 30309
Bining recently started a home business called Spice Me Up in which she will be conducting cooking lessons on Indian fare and selling authentic Indian spices. Either in her kitchen or yours, Bining will be teaching a variety of courses that include such foods as samosas, sabji, aloo gobi, pakora, butter chicken, curries and more. Cooking Indian isn’t just in her blood, she says, it’s in her heart. “I’ve been cooking since I moved out,” and before that helping her mom in the kitchen, she says. “It just feels so natural.”
For those not yet versed in Indian cuisine, “it will wake up your taste buds, it will make them say ‘Wow!’” she says. One hour in Bining’s kitchen, before even taking one bite, the strong, mouth-watering scent that’s filled her house, through the halls, down the stairs, into the front foyer, will surely have you begging for more. For more information, contact Raj Bining at 778-881-5505 or by email at rajbining@gmail.com. She can also be found on Facebook under rajspicemeup.

Looking forward to a happy and healthy new year Happy New Year Chilliwack! We’ve said farewell to 2013, as we welcome 2014 with open arms and, perhaps, a glass of bubbly. 2014: untainted and full of opportunities. We make Tanja audaSHAW cious promises, since 2014 is a clean slate; a chance to start over. We say, “this year I will get healthier, be happier, spend more time with family, make more money” and so on. Unfortunately, it’s not quite that simple. The switch to a new year is not a clean slate; it’s a simple turn of a page in a calendar. You bring your habits and circumstances right into the new year with you. My point is not that we should give up on new year’s resolutions and goal setting altogether. But if we want to make a change in 2014, we have to start with 2013. Reflect on 2013: As I mentioned above, a new year is not a clean slate. You have roles (mother, husband, career person etc.), habits (good and bad) and circumstance (living situation, finances, etc.) that are accompanying you into 2104. Before moving forward, now is the time to reflect on the past year. What did you accomplish? What stands out? What didn’t go so well? What is your overall feeling about the past year? I recently did this for my business and shared it on my website. Make your goals specific: Once you’ve reviewed the past year and determined your start point, it’s time to convert general feelings into specific goals. For example, if you want to be fitter this year, a goal may be to run three times per week, or race in five 10K runs. If you want to spend more time with your family, a goal may be to schedule a meaningful activity to do with your entire family once per week and to eat at least four dinners at home together during the week. Your goal can be simple and
small. Maybe you want to write in a journal once per week, read six books this year, or to spend one week abroad. Pick one to three goals
NEW HOURS!
and write them down. Make a Plan: Antoine de SaintExupéry said ‘a goal without a plan is just a wish’. Think about
what you need to do to achieve each of your goals. For example, if you want to race in five 10K runs, you’ll need to pick your races, have
a training plan and schedule in your runs If you want to have four dinners with your family each week you’ll need to have a meal plan, and
make sure to be home by dinner time. I wish you a healthy, successful, and joyful 2014. Tanja Shaw is the owner of
Ascend Fitness Inc., a private training studio. Tanja and her team of expert fitness professionals works to inspire and educate Chilliwack residents to make positive and power changes in their lives through physical fitness and

Memorable bl moments You never expect a team to score 13 goals, something the Chiefs had done once over 23 and a half seasons, writes Jacob Bestebroer
Ali Renwick’s team went 4-3 to place third at the Tim Hortons Junior Women’s Curling Championships, held at the Chilliwack Curling Club. Chilliwack’s Renwick — joined by skip Dezaray Hawes, second Gabrielle Plonka and lead Casey Freeman — had wins over the Briana Egan rink from Coquitlam, Corryn Brown rink from Kamloops, Mariah Coulombe rink from Juan de Fuca and Shawna Jensen rink from Victoria. But an 8-1 semi-final loss to Nanaimo’s Kalia Van Osch kept them out of the final. Van Osch beat Brown in a thrilling final, scoring one in the 11th end to take a 7-6 decision. The men’s side had Langley’s Tyler Tardi rink facing Victoria’s Cameron de Jong rink in the final, with de Jong winning10-5. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS
Chiefs face off against divisional foes They still lead the Mainland division with an overall record of 22-121-4, but Prince George is just three points back with three games in hand. The Rivermen hold the upper hand in the season series with Chilliwack, taking three of the four meetings. Chilliwack beat Langley 3-0 in mid-October, but the Rivermen have taken 4-3, 4-0 and 4-2 decisions since then. Chilliwack and Langley will see a lot of each other in January, facing off four times.
The Prince George Spruce Kings (21-11-2-2) provide another divisional foe Sunday night, with a 5 p.m. start. The Sprucies pummeled the Chiefs thrice before Christmas, taking 4-1, 8-5 and 7-2 decisions over a span of five days between Dec. 15-20. The teams met three times previously, in midSeptember. Chilliwack won one, 2-1 in overtime. PG took the others by scores of 2-1 and 7-1. They’ll face each other

one more time before the regular season is done, meeting Feb. 22 in Chilliwack. After beating Surrey’s Eagles 5-3 and 5-2 last weekend, Chilliwack comes into this weekend with a record of 10-26-1-2. They trail Surrey by 10 points for the Mainland division’s fourth playoff seed, with the Eagles holding one game in hand. If Chilliwack can keep that gap from widening, they’ll have four head-tohead games against Surrey left on the schedule.

Home of the
minutes dominating the Chiefs. That led to the strangest moment of the year when Chiefs head coach Harvey Smyl called a time out. Has that everr happened before? It made perfect sense. The Chiefs had lost 11 straight and had to be a fragile group. Smyl needed to settle his team down and that’s what he did. The most disappointing and best moments both occurred during lastt spring’s first round playoff series versus Prince George. The Chiefs were a much better team than PG. Winning the best of five series quickly was veryy important and not doing so really hurt the Chiefs in their second round series versus Surrey. They lost to the Eagles in three straight. As disappointing as thatt PG series was, it did sett up the best moment of the year, a win in game five to give Chilliwack hockeyy fans their first hockeyy playoff series win in seven years. There is nothing like the feeling of that final and deciding game in a playoff series and Chiefs fans were ready for thatt one and played a big partt in the Chiefs moving on to round two. Happy New Year everyone.

Fresh off two massively important wins over the Surrey Eagles, the Chilliwack Chiefs try to knock off Langley and Prince George in BCHL action this weekend. The Rivermen are in town Friday night, facing a Chiefs team that’s won three straight. Chilliwack faces a Langley team that’s lost three straight. The Rivermen limped into the Christmas break with losses to Nanaimo (3-2), Coquitlam (6-5) and Coquitlam again (3-2).
With 2013 in the rear vview iew mirror, I’d thought it’d be a good time to look at some of the best, not so best, strangest, most disappointing and most unexpected moments for the Chilliwack Chiefs over the last twelve months. Let’s get the not so best out of the way first. Prior to thumping the Trail T rail Smoke Eaters 13-5 on Dec. 21 the Chiefs had lost a franchise record 11 straight games. The previous high was eight during the 1996-97 season. The most unexpected moment had to be that record-setting win over T rail. You never expect Trail. a team to score 13 goals, something the Chiefs had only done once previously over 23 and a half seasons. Even more unexpected than that was the seven goal first period outburst. Never before had a Chiefs team scored that many goals in one period. That leads us directly to the “I’ve never seen that before” moment of the year. With the Chiefs leading that game 7-1 after one period I wondered at the time what the message would be to each team from their respective coaching staffs. Whatever was said in the Trail dressing room certainly worked as the Smoke Eaters quickly scored to make it 7-2 and spent the next few

Sports Silver stars Chilliwack’s A3 Bruins became the first local rep team since 1995 to win a final at the Peewee Jamboree, downing the South Delta Storm for the silver division crown. Chilliwack trailed 3-2 heading into the third period but rallied for a 4-3 win. The Cowichan Valley Capitals took top spot at Chilliwack’s flag-ship tournament, beating Nanaimo’s Clippers 5-2 in the platinum division championship. The Campbell River Tyees blew out the Coquitlam Chiefs with a 7-1 win in the gold division final. The bronze division went the Langley C2 Phantoms. Two Chilliwack goalies won development packages from Langleybased Magic Hockey; Kolton King (C6 Snipers) and Dawson Pelletier (A1 Bruins).
Lancer losses The UFV Cascades women’s basketball went 1-2 at the Lancers Holiday Classic, held in Windsor, Ontario. The Cascades, ranked seventh nationally, tipped off against the host Lancers and University of Guelph Gryphons. UFV lost their opener Dec. 28, falling 66-39 to Windsor. The Lancers pulled away with a 17-2 second quarter run and forced the Cascades to commit 24 turnovers. UFV bounced back with a dominant 82-66 win over the Gryphons. Leading 23-7 after one quarter, the Cascades watched Guelph whittle the lead down to nine. But Chilliwack’s Kayli Sartori answered back with seven straight points to put the game away. UFV’s final game was a rematch with Windsor Dec. 30. The final score favoured the Lancers 63-43, but the Cascades put up a formidable fight. UFV gets back to regular season Canada West action Jan. 10, visiting the University of Winnipeg. Get info online at ufvcascades.ca.
Four BCHL grads suited up for Team Canada at the Spengler Cup hockey tournament in Switzerland. Travis Roche (Trail) and Geoff Kinrade (Cowichan Valley) played D while ex-Vernon Vipers Glen Metropolit and Ryan MacMurchy skated up front. Canada fell 6-5 to Swiss club HC Geneve-Servette in a semi-final.

Children Linda (Bill) Uren of Edmonton, Gary Aitken of Hope and Janie (Murray) Campbell of Kamloops; grandchildren Chris (Alison) Uren, Julia-Lin (Jason) Ding of Edmonton, Erin (Marcel) Chenier of Morinville and Heather Campbell of Toronto and 7 much loved greatgrandchildren. She had four brothers, Carl (Doris) Bueckert, Peter (Barbara) Bueckert, Frank (Sarah) Bueckert and Hank (Joyce) Bueckert and one sister Agnes (Alvin) Janz. Susan was a strong, independent and classy lady, a wonderful role-model for her children and well loved by all whose life she touched. She adored her grandchildren, and was a hero to them all. They admired her for her strength & honesty and she was always proud of every one of them. Susan’s faith was strong and her faith saw her through many difficult times, not the least of which was her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. She was proud of her volunteer roles within the church and formed many life long friendships within the different churches that she was involved in. She spent most of her adult life in Chilliwack, moving to Kamloops in 2000 to be closer to family. Susan was a loving and caring mother and grandmother and demonstrated her love with a touch, a hug or a kiss. She especially loved children and enjoyed quietly watching them with a smile on her face. She made friends and admirers where ever she went. A Service of Remembrance will be held in the spring when all family members are able to attend. The family looks forward to seeing all of her friends at that time. In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made in mom’s honour to the Alzheimer’s Society.

can be You can shed tears that she is gone Or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back Or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she’s gone Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. Marianna was taken from us suddenly and much too early and much too young (54). Marianna was one of those people that once you met her you never forgot her. She had a natural warmth and connection with everyone she met. She was a devoted wife to Don and a dedicated and loving mother to her only son Jason. She was the family “glue”. She was born in Chilliwack, BC, and spent her early years living at Cultus Lake where she worked at the riding stables. Her natural warmth and love of all God’s creatures made her a favourite of every horse that she worked with. Marianna worked as a bookkeeper or “bean counter” as she often said. Her career spanned from School District #33, ICG, Superior Propane, TyCrop Manufacturing to her last position at R&R Biz Solutions. At all her work places she was a dedicated employee. Marianna loved to travel and was always searching and looking forward to that next adventure. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing video games and loved to read her beloved Harlequin romances. She also loved doing crossword and word search. Marianna also enjoyed square dancing, round dancing and anything that made her twirl. A phone call to Marianna always solicited the proverbial “hang on a sec I have to turn my tunes down” and spoke of her love for music. Marianna was an avid cook and a baker of the best oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip cookies. A member of the Kiwanis Club of Chilliwack, Marianna dedicated her effort to the Super Reader and Read To Me program for many years. Left to mourn her loss are her brothers: Bill and Rob Sheridan; best friend of over 43 years and she called the “sis” she never had, MaryAnne Kaiser, and her other friend Brenda Bosman whom she had also known for over 40 years; brothers-in-law, Ken Neuls (Doreen), Rick Neuls (Roxanne); sisters-in-law Vivian Charles (Archie), Patti Nault (Phil); nieces and nephews: Drew (Michelle, Kaylee and Daniel), Tom (Andrew, Ashley, Kaiden), Sarah (Shane and Athena), Robbie (Sarah, Jake and Aliya). Also left to mourn her passing are the extended families Charles, Thompson, Shingler and Neuls. Marianna was predeceased by her father, Peter John Sheridan; mother, Angela Sheridan; sisters-in-law Marlien Sheridan, Lois Sheridan, June Shingler, Shirley Thompson and brothers-in-law Fred and Bob Neuls. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 1:00pm at the Salvation Army Chilliwack Community Church located at 46420 Brooks Ave., Chilliwack, BC, V2P 1C5. In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated to The Salvation Army” in Marianna’s name.
