Hutton back on CBC in third season of Arctic Air BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

In the final episode of Arctic Air’s second season, Krista, angered at having been left out of the loop in a kidnapping, is last seen heading for a plane to Bali. She’s just told her business partner and off-and-on love interest, Bobby (played by heartthrob actor Adam Beach), that she doesn’t know when she’ll be back. The implication is that she just might not return. Fans of the CBC-TV drama can rest easy. Krista came back in Tuesday’s season premiere, returning “on a mission” to make some changes to the airline she co-owns with Bobby and her father, Mel. “I’m still in the show and I’m not just appearing via Skype from Bali,” Pascale Hutton, a Prince Charles Secondary School grad and star of Arctic Air, said in a telephone interview from Vancouver. “I guess that’s not a spoiler alert! “Krista comes back and a bunch of drama ensues. Her and Bobby and Mel try and sort out the dynamic of the airline and also the dynamic of their relationships. Krista comes back with a lot of new ideas about what she wants to do with the airline. That kind of ruffles a bunch of feathers and everybody has to kind of get on board because she’s a woman on a mission!” Hutton, who studied drama at the University of Alberta (where she met her husband, Danny Dorosh), is the daughter of retired teachers Elizabeth and Ian Hutton. Thank goodness for moms, she said. Elizabeth visits Vancouver, helping to care for her grandson, Ryu. See HUTTON, page 3

With at least 18 businesses, churches and homes broken into over the holiday season, it appears likely that Citizens on Patrol (COPs) will be reactivated. A group of 20 business people and concerned citizens crowded the coffee room at the RCMP detachment on Monday to discuss their concerns with Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan and Cpl. Charlotte Joa, who was the RCMP liaison with the previous COPs group, which disbanded quietly in 2013. At least four former COPs volunteers attended the meeting. “Until you are formally a COPs group, I can’t say yes or no to your continuing patrols,” Gollan told the group, some of whom have been doing early morning patrols in an effort to stifle the crime wave. “But you have a right to protect your own property.” Gollan told the Advance earlier on Monday that the RCMP has identified a person of interest in the break-ins. Described only as a male, about six feet tall, who wears dark clothing and carries a red backpack, Gollan said the possible suspect is known as an illegal drug user who would be undertaking criminal activity to support his lifestyle. When news of the break-ins spread around the community, a group of concerned citizens began to conduct informal early morning security rounds in their vehicles. At least one was stopped and questioned by police in an unmarked vehicle. See COPS, page 3

Would like to thank all the community supporters, businesses, and volunteers for their contributions.

An ice castle assembled by B-Boys Construction is a colourful beacon in the parking lot of Home Hardware Building Centre. James Blackmore of B-Boys said the crew made one at home last winter, using ice from a nearby pond, and wanted to share something similar with the community this year. Erected on New Year’s Eve, the castle took a half-dozen workers about five hours to assemble.

f you’re still trying to decide how to get rid of your Christmas tree, the Creston Lions Club may have the answer. On Jan. 11 and 12, from 10 a.m.-dusk, you can bring your old tree to the Millenium Park parking lot, where the Lions and Creston Tree Service will be present with a wood chipper and operator. This is an environmentally friendly way to dispose of your tree — no tossing out with the garbage, no leaving in the ditch, but instead the Lions will solve your problem with a minimum of fuss and muss. While there is no charge for this service, Lions Club spokesman and citizen of the year Henry Schoof said that if you make a donation to the Creston Lions Club, all of the monies received will be spent in Creston on various Lions projects. •••

Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program is holding its fourth annual Art Trot Silent Art Auction and Treasures to Buy fundraiser on Feb. 7 and 8 in the Sunshine Room at the Creston and District Community Complex. This has been a quality art show by donation and a lot of fun too. Last year’s event was a huge success, with 40 pieces of art up for auction and several tables filled with treasures to buy. This year’s event will once again feature work by local artists gathered as the Creative Stew, and work by students from Adam Robertson Elementary School and Prince Charles Secondary School. Those items were really popular last year! Consider this an opportunity to create or re-gift a work of art or an interesting craft. Donations are eligible for tax receipts and gratefully accepted at the CDSCL office (205 Seventh Ave. N., 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday to Friday). An opening night reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Feb. 7, with snacks, beverages and the program’s very own Peter Feltham on guitar for entertainment. Congratulations to Heath Berry, who won the Art Trot poster art contest, and now has his winning piece on the event poster.

Greeting cards are being produced with all of the submitted artwork and will be available to purchase at the event. For more information, contact Michelle at 250-402-6793 or mwhiteaway@hotmail.com, or Barb at 250-428-2882 or bmirth@shaw.ca. •••

he Creston Skating Club is pleased to once again offer its CanSkate for Hockey program. This is the ideal place to develop basic skating skills — skating with speed and power, stopping, turning, skating backwards, crossovers, and more — that are essential to being able to play hockey well. It’s also a great way for parents to gain the basic skating skills they need to keep up with the kids during an afternoon at the rink! The CanSkate for Hockey program runs for eight sessions, beginning Jan. 9. The half-hour sessions take place on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m., and the cost for the full eight sessions is $80 (plus a $35 SkateCanada insurance fee, for skaters who are not already registered with the club). For more information or to register, contact the Creston Skating Club at crestonbcskatingclub@gmail.com or 250-428-1650.

“It’s funny, John Reardon and I always joke because in the first season — I think it was the second episode — he and I had to do this, like, nude scene together. We barely knew each other and it was really awkward and uncomfortable. But now we know each other so well, and we’re quite good buddies, we are always debating about if they were to write us a scene like that again, whether it would be more awkward now! Or was it more awkward when we didn’t know each other? It’s hard to say!” The camaraderie that has grown among on- and offscreen personnel makes life easier, she said. Most filming days are scheduled for 12 hours, and she has to allow 90 minutes for hair and makeup before shooting starts. Add in the commute and it makes for a long day. “You put your head down and you just do it — you do the best you can,” she laughed. Hutton remains firmly grounded despite the success that has made her a nationally recognized TV star. “Any time I go back to Creston or even up the lake I always feel that the community that I was a part of when I was growing up, and that I’m still connected to through my parents, really, really supported me and informed where I’m at now,” she said. “I feel that from them — that there is this true investment in me as a person and where I’m at now.”

Gollan cautioned volunteers that until Citizens on Patrol is formally recognized by the provincial government, it has no insurance or access to resources, such as radios and compensation for fuel. COPs volunteers have to go through a security check. “But as a COPs group or as citizens, you provide eyes, ears and a

beautiful time for us to go up there and capture that on film.” She is clearly pleased with the way the hit series is progressing. “I really think this season the storytelling is head and shoulders above where we were in seasons one and two. It’s always hard when you’re starting a series and you’re trying to sort out what works and what doesn’t work, what people respond to and what they don’t respond to. I just feel like our creator, Ian Weir, and one of our new head writers, John Cooksy, the two of them put their heads together — went back to basics and wanted to refine what the show was — keep all the good stuff that was happening in the first seasons and make it more concise. It’s more of the emotional journey of the characters with the action-adventure journeys. There’s a marriage between the two. One informs the other and vice versa. “I don’t want to say anything about our mid-season episode (number 6), but when I first read that script my heart was beating — it was so intense and so alive with what was happening with my character and Bobby’s. The intensity of the situation they’re in — it’s really life and death — and they deal with that head-on. It amps up the drama of the show to a whole new level.” While Hutton describes the cast and crew as “just like a family”, the familiarity brings its own challenges.

voice,” he said. “We will work with Kevin to ensure that all volunteers conduct their security rounds safely.” Gollan said that police will be attempting to locate their potential suspect as soon as possible in an effort to get more information. “Our efforts to prevent crime haven’t been successful in this matter,” he said. “Now our focus is on stopping it.” Joa encouraged all citizens to take responsibility for their property. “We have also had another series of entries into unlocked vehicles, which we don’t know were related to the break-ins,” she said. “But it would be helpful if people locked their vehicles and their houses for their own protection.” For more information about how to become involved with COPs, call Kevin Smith at 250-402-8420. Pascale Hutton in a scene from Arctic Air’s second season.

Larry Binks says the bitterness that has arisen from his efforts to get certified fire protection to property owners in West Creston has taken him by surprise. “Sadly, this has kind of split the community,” the Regional District of Central Kootenay director for Area C said on Monday. “People who want fire service have organized and people who don’t want it have organized — it’s gotten kind of ugly.” Binks and those who want fire protection have been attempting to get sufficient support — more than half of the properties and more than half of the total property value must be represented on the yes side before the taxation can be implemented. Fire protection would be provided by WynndelLakeview, Canyon-Lister and

Town of Creston fire departments. Binks arranged for a two-week time extension for the petition when he realized that the RDCK offices would be closed for seven of the last 15 days of December. The petition process now must be complete by Jan. 15. “That created a real storm,” he said. “I wanted to make sure that everyone had sufficient opportunity to get their petitions in if they want fire protection — this is about making sure all taxpayers have their say.” With less than a week remaining to garner sufficient support, he estimated that 42 per cent of property owners representing 48 per cent of the total property value have signed in favour of fire protection. “But I would want to see a clear majority — maybe 55-60 per cent — before I sign a taxation bylaw,” he said.

From page 1 When Hutton signed on for the first year of Arctic Air, she also had recurring roles in a couple of other series. Now she has only one job, but it’s an allconsuming one for seven months a year. “We have my mom and a nanny living with us right now so that’s a huge help,” she said. “Then my mother-in-law is going to come for the last month of filming to help. We call in all the troops. We definitely can’t do it alone. “ Dorosh is a member of the Vancouver Police Department, but the stress of juggling professional and home life is worth it, she said. “I’ve never seen him happier than he is. He’s got a great squad and he’s in a district that he really wants to be in. He’s just so fulfilled and invigorated — it’s really nice.” For the star of television and movies, Pascale’s balance at home comes in large chunks, not in the daily routines of parents with more regular routines. “I had a quieter first half of the year where I was just kind of focused on being at home,” she said. “And then once we started filming it has ramped up to lightning speed in our house. It’s really crazy. The show is really busy this year for me, and it’s fantastic. I love what’s happening on the show and I really think this is our best season. But it definitely makes for a busy household, that’s for sure.” Shooting the third season of Arctic Air (which airs Tuesdays on CBC) started in July and continued into December. “We did it a little bit differently this year. We started here in Vancouver and filmed in the studio for a while. Near the end of August, because of what those episodes required in terms of environment, we ended up going to Winnipeg instead of Yellowknife, only because the episode revolves around a dam and we couldn’t get access to any dams around Yellowknife. “Then we went up to Yellowknife near the end of September. If you’re going to go to Yellowknife, that’s the time to go. It’s really spectacular — the leaves are all turning and the weather is warm but not hot. It was a beautiful,

Break-ins keep RCMP busy over holidays BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

A rash of break-ins to businesses, churches and residences kept Creston RCMP members unusually busy over the holiday season. At least 18 break-ins are suspected to be the work of one male, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. Police responded to a total of 75 calls from Dec. 30-Jan. 5, Gollan said. December 30 •Break-ins to a Canyon Street restaurant and an 11th Avenue North business were reported. •A Simmons Road resident reported the fraudulent use of his credit card. •A bicycle was stolen in a break-in to a Northwest Boulevard business. •“Try Googling for information before you send money for an Internet transaction,” is Gollan’s advice after a Canyon Street resident reported sending money to the U.S. to purchase a vehicle that apparently doesn’t exist. When police received the complaint, they Googled the contact information of the “seller” and found it is connected with numerous fraud complaints. •No theft was reported in a break-in to a Northwest Boulevard business. •Shots were reported in the Devon Street area.

T-Cats win three out of four post-holiday games BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

A 15-day Christmas break didn’t slow down the Creston Valley Thunder Cats — in the four games following their time off break, the Eddie Mountain Division-leading Thunder Cats lost only one game, scoring a total of 25 goals in one away and three home games. Having only a single practice prior to the Dec. 30 game against the Kimberley Dynamiters, “we had a pretty slow start to the game, but got better as the game went on,” said head coach Josh Hepditch. A goal by Carson Cartwright tied the score 1-1 after the first period, but the Thunder Cats were still down 4-2 after an unassisted goal by Maverick Lynes in the second. Only Thunder Cat Brandon Formosa scored in the third period, resulting in a 4-3 loss — despite 46 shots on the Kimberley goal. “Their goaltender played extremely well, and made some unbelievable saves,” said Hepditch. “It was the best goalie performance I’ve seen this year.” With three post-holiday wins, the Dynamiters are closing the gap on the Thunder Cats, sitting five points behind with 43, followed closely by the Fernie Ghostriders, with 40. The Thunder Cats had a better showing in the next night’s game hosting the Ghostriders — Fernie’s fourth game in four days — which they won 7-2. “We wanted to try and get those points and get our spread a little bit higher,” said Hepditch. “They had the mindset to throw everything at

the net and found a way to score some goals.” Logan Styler, Formosa (power play) and Justin Post scored the first three goals for the Thunder Cats, followed by two from the Ghostriders before the end of the first period. Styler and Connor Ward each scored in the second period, with Ethan Rusnack and Marcel Fuchs scoring in the third. “Getting into third period, we had a good lead and you could tell they were low on energy and jump,” said Hepditch. Friday’s game in Invermere saw the Thunder Cats score seven goals in one game again, this time defeating the Columbia Valley Rockies 7-1. “We kind of went in with the mindset that if the season were to end today, that’s who we play in playoffs,” said Hepditch. “They came out strong in the first period, and we matched their intensity and sort of upped it.” The game was scoreless until 9:20 in the first period, when Matti Jmaeff scored on a power play, followed by Trevor Hanna (power play) and Ward (unassisted). Lynes and Styler scored in the second period, and in the third, both scored again after a Rockies goal. Styler earned three points in that game, having assisted with Jmaeff’s first-period goal. “He’s been doing very good offensively, and we think we can get more out of him, and he’s starting to show that now,” said Hepditch. Timely saves — 23 in all — from goalie Kyle Michalovsky also helped the Thunder Cats achieve that victory.

On Saturday, the 100 Mile House Wranglers visited Creston for a game the Thunder Cats won 8-1, their second win over the South Cariboo team. Despite the high score, the win required a lot of effort. “That was probably the hardest another team has come in and played us in a while,” said Hepditch. “They were definitely ready to come in and get two points.”

Property Owner’s Checklist Have you received your 2014 property assessment notice?

SUBMITTED Drawing his inspiration from country and folk legends like Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, Merle Travis and the Carter Family, Steven Palmer will present a joyous blending of original and traditional country, folk, gospel, blues and his own songwriting at the Snoring Sasquatch on Jan. 18. With a voice like a “warm blanket on a cold winter’s night,” according to Jericho Folk Club, or a “shady tree on a hot summer’s day,” according to Scott Cook, Palmer is equally at home on sixstring or 12-string guitar, performing for folk festivals, house concerts and soft seating theatres. After 40 years as a travelling musician covering a lot of road, Palmer is still playing and still touring, grown enough to sing about life

Styler scored within the first minute, and Hanna followed suit before the Wranglers scored their only goal. Goals from Colby Livingstone (power play) and Jaymes Veitch brought the score to 4-1 by the end of the first period. In the second period, Formosa and Lynes each added a goal, while Cartwright and Hanna did the same in the third. Formosa, Collins and Styler each earned three points in the

game, while Michalovsky again proved valuable, stopping 31 shots by the Wranglers. The 17-year-old goalie is now ranked seventh in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. “We definitely had a good team effort in that game,” said Hepditch. “We kept up our pace and they slowly dropped off.” This weekend, the Thunder Cats play three games, visiting the Rockies on Friday, hosting the Revelstoke Grizzlies on Saturday and visiting the Spokane Braves on Sunday. “It’s never easy to go there and win,” said Hepditch of the Rockies, who hold fourth place in the division. “They’ve got a team that plays hard. If we don’t show up, any team can win any night.” Saturday’s game will be the Thunder Cats’ second against the Grizzlies, whom they beat 11-2 in November. “We beat them pretty good up in their arena,” said Hepditch. “We’re definitely going to need good effort to beat them.” As the third game in a threegame weekend, Hepditch expects Sunday’s game against the Braves to be a tough one. “They’re battling with Grand Forks for the final spot [in the Neil Murdoch Division],” said Hepditch.

My week, the first full week of a new year, started with an email that had me smiling and in tears at the same time. The story actually starts more than 40 years ago, when I was a junior and senior high school student in Bowness, a Calgary suburb. I was part of an advanced class that had a number of perks, not least that we always had the very best of teachers (admittedly, there were a few duds, but that’s part of what makes public education a genuine reflection of life in a community). One of the many excellent teachers that made an indelible impression on my memory was Jim Campbell. Now, Jim was not among those with whom I had a close personal connection. He was not like one, a counsellor whom I would later visit at his new school after he transferred from Bowness (he later would become the provincial NDP leader and an MLA — I was a Progressive Conservative and we agreed on nothing, except the fact that we liked each other). Or like another teaching couple, whose home I would visit with friends after we graduated (coincidentally, the male half of the duo would go onto become an NDP MLA, too). No, my connection to Jim Campbell was relegated to the classroom, and to witnessing his interactions with other students and teachers. Jim was a no-nonsense teacher of the sort that could maintain tight control in his classroom without really being thought of as a disciplinarian. A couple of classroom memories returned as I was reminded of him before Christmas. In one of our Grade 10 social studies classes we were required to do a project and present it to the class. One of my friends arrived with a long-play record and launched

into a quite literate discussion of the Doors song, The End. For those unfamiliar, The End is a somewhat apocalyptic tale that uses violence and incest as metaphors for the decline of

I started reading the first book almost immediately, and floods of memories came back — not only of my own childhood in suburban Calgary and summers in Fernie, but of my very good fortune to have had teachers like Jim Campbell as early influences. I sat down last week and wrote him a letter, not knowing whether he was well enough to read it, or even if he was still alive. I hoped that he would receive it in Lorne Eckersley time to hear affirmation not only of what a fine teacher he was, but also that he was a role civilization (my interpretation). Aptly, it later would be used by Francis Ford model of the highest order. “What an incredible letter that Coppola in the final scene of the brilyou have sent,” came the unexpectliant Apocalypse Now. Determining the best term

Choosing the mortgage term that is right for you can be a challenging proposition for even the savviest of homebuyers. By understanding mortgage terms and what they mean in dollars and cents, you can save the most money and choose the term that is right for you. The first consideration when comparing various mortgage terms is to understand that a longer term generally means a higher corresponding interest rate, and a shorter term generally means a lower corresponding interest rate. While this generalization might lead you to believe that a shorter term is always the preferred option, this is not necessarily the case. While you may be paying a slightly higher interest rate for the 10-year term versus a three-year term, you have the security of knowing that your interest rate and payment is going to be the same for 10 years instead of three. The best approach is to tailor your mortgage term to your risk tolerance. For those who need stability in their payments, a longer term is generally the best option. This means that you know exactly what interest rate you will be paying for a longer period. If paying your mortgage each month places you close to the financial edge of

your comfort zone, you may want to opt for a longer-term mortgage, perhaps 10 years, so that you can ensure that you will be able to afford your

Another factor to take into account is the possibility of payout penalties if the term has to be broken. This could happen if you had to sell the home midway through the term. While this can be quite a complicated topic; generally speaking, the longer the term you have, the more the payout penalty is going to be. If you know you are going to be moving in two years, it may be best to have a two-year term. Again, though, this depends on whether you plan on buying another home once you sell because many lenders offer mortgage “porting” options, which effectively allow you to bring your mortgage with you to the next home you buy. It also depends on whether you have a fixed or floating interest rate, and whether rates have gone up or down. Choosing the right mortgage term is a unique decision for each individual. By understanding your personal financial situation and your tolerance for risk, a mortgage professional can assist you in choosing the mortgage term that will work the best. mortgage payments should the interest rates increase. By the end of a 10-year mortgage term, most buyers are in a better financial situation, have a lower principle balance due and, should interest rates have risen, will be able to afford higher mortgage payments. If you are shopping for a mortgage for an investment property, you will likely want to consider choosing a longer mortgage term. This will allow you to know that the mortgage payments on the property will be steady for a long time and allow you to more accurately project your future income from the property. If, on the other hand, you don’t mind taking a bit more of a risk by having a shorter term, you may reap the reward of paying less in interest.

Senior gets licence after $1,000 and year of stress To the Editor: My last letter on DriveAble tests (April 25, 2013) appeared when I was already into the second round of tests. So, I again had the tests in the doctor’s office, and later the computer and the road tests in Cranbrook; these are payable in advance to the Insight Driving Solutions in Vancouver ($420). Seven weeks later, I got the announcement from the Office of Superintendent of the Motor Vehicles (OSMV) that I failed; however, if I wanted to pursue this further, I should take their letter to my doctor, and if he could show improvement in my medical condition they would review my case. The word “medical” does not necessarily refer to the driver’s health; it’s just a word they use along with DriveAble testing system, presumably to emphasize the fact that doctors are involved in this, but DriveAble’s credentials are, even so, rather threadbare. My doctor did write a letter to the OSMV, and because of his letter and my complaints, the reply from Victoria was favourable. It said, in part, “Having reviewed your case as a whole, I have decided to offer you an ICBC road test re-examination, which will assess your functional ability to drive safely. The road test would be conducted in your own vehicle.” At the end of November 2013 I did this on Creston roads — and passed. After one year of continuous stress, and spending over $1,000 on the project, I got my driver’s licence back for two years, but next fall I will have to defend it again with a “routine medical”.

OpiniOn Line

Meantime, I also looked at the letter to the editor by Deputy Supt. of Motor Vehicles Stephanie Melvin (April 18, 2013). She wrote, “We have worked with the province’s physician colleges to ensure doctors refer patients with possible cognitive impairment to the OSMV.” She obviously considers this as something very important and proper. But we see it a little differently. We see that this is actually indirect government pressure on B.C. doctors, and this has been done on behalf of Edmontonbased DriveAble company, which presents itself as a champion of road safety, but is in reality nothing more than a pseudo-scientific money-making scheme that has been widely disqualified, including by the federal CanDrive research team in Ottawa, as something unfit for public domain. In B.C., DriveAble is supported by the ruling party that originally imported it from Alberta. But sooner or later they too will have to recognize that supporting something unsupportable is not smart. According to DriveAble itself, the tests are passed only by a very small percentage of drivers involved; the rest are rejected outright or left in a limbo of indeterminacy. Most of these probably could not put up with the stress, and never got their licence back. And all these lose their driver’s licence for no truly valid reason. It exploits the elderly, who are often poorly qualified to deal with the ways of intimidating officialdom, and also cannot bear the ongoing stress. Melvin added, “The combined results of the in-office assessment, onroad evaluation and the driver’s medical information allow us to make fair decisions about the driver’s ability to continue driving safely.” That would be just great if it were true, but it is not true. The way the tests are put together and the way they are administered guarantees failure of over 85 per cent of participants; this ratio is very important for DriveAble company and its shareholders. Without the high rate of failure, it would soon be out of business — it is as simple as that.

I am sure Ms. Melvin means well, but maybe it is time she had another look and see that all training and testing of young and old drivers can be done through the existing setup of the ICBC, without the dishonest, mean and costly DriveAble. The present arrangement of a parallel testing system at taxpayer expense is the height of fiscal irresponsibility, and when we think of economic difficulties in the province, the sending of B.C. taxpayers’ dollars to Alberta, borders on insanity or criminality. Anton Skerbinc Boswell

Stranded bus riders grateful for ‘angels’ in Cranbrook To the Editor: Thanks and best wishes to the “street angels” in Cranbrook who opened their hearts and home, offering warmth, coffee, juice, fine food and treats, kindness and comfort to a stranded HandyDart busload. We were treated to the true spirit of giving with the joyful, selfless generosity of a potluck, and the sincere hopeful message of the Last Supper: “Love one another.” We did! It was a moving experience for all involved. All the “road angels” (paramedics, ambulance, fire, police, safety crews, two truck drivers, bus drivers, and others) are out there all the time, patiently waiting to help us out when bad things happen, hoping they won’t ever been needed. They will be! All of the other angels make like better, by simply choosing to be kind. George Hodge Creston

Resolutions should include sleep

Wow. 2014. Who thought we would make it this far? Hopefully you had a restful holiday season and a chance to spend time with family (although the stories are starting to surface indicating families and restful might not always be applicable in the same sentence). Perhaps post-holiday, you can work on the restful aspect if you didn’t get the chance during. In a somewhat related angle, I just read an article that said the New England Journal of Medicine indicated that brain conditionrelated deaths are skyrocketing, and between 1979 and 2010, men are up 66 per cent and women 92 per cent. Not great news, especially since studies find that 54 per cent of these could have been avoided. The thinking is that in the future this number will continue to rise, so ultimately, prevention is the key. So, what if you could hire a crew of custodians to keep your brain in good condition? Guess what? You already do have a crew, but they may not be getting a chance to do their job. One of the key factors in those custodians doing their job is simple: sleep. The University of Rochester Medical Center for Translational Neuromedicine released a study showing slumber gives your brain a chance to clear out potentially harmful waste that builds up while you’re awake. This waste includes amyloid beta, a driver of Alzheimer’s.

Essentially, while you sleep your brain takes out the trash, so by cutting back or not having good siestas, we are not providing the time for proper cleaning. This process has been named the

through your brain tissue to remove the waste. When you sleep, your brain cells shrink 60 per cent. This allows the fluid to move faster and more freely; and •The pumping of this fluid takes a lot of energy, which doesn’t seem to be available when you are awake and engaging actively with your environment. The lead author of the study, Dr. Maiken Nedergaard, puts it this way, “You can think of it like having a house party. You can either entertain your guests, or you can clean the house. But, you can’t really do both at the same time.” The researcher point out that nearly all degenerative brain diseases are linked to the accumulation of cellular waste products. Most studies indicate that if you add up all your minutes of sleep for the year and divide by 365, the number should be between seven and nine hours of sleep. So if you haven’t been reaching that number, or whatever number is right for you, make getting the proper amount of sleep your first new year’s resolution toward a healthier lifestyle. Once you land that one, everything else should be a bit clearer. From all the staff at the Creston and District Community Complex: May your 2014 be the best year yet! glymphatic system, which is basically a plumbing system in your brain that opens up when you sleep, allowing toxins to be flushed out via your cerebrospinal fluid. It is 10 times more active when you are sleeping than when you are awake and your brain actually physically changes while you sleep, which allows for the increased flow. While theory on this has been around a decade or two, it was only recently that technology became available for scientists to be able to map it out. Exciting stuff! Of note: •Lack of sleep seems to play a role in dementia and other brain disorders; •Cellular waste is flushed out of your brain cells and into your circulatory system and then to the liver; •Cerebral spinal fluid is pumped

Looks Toyota has always been a logical purchase, based on reliability and durability but now its designs too are capturing buyers with a visual, desirable esthetic. The 2014 edition is 7.5cm longer (mostly in the rear seat and cargo area), 1.5cm wider and 3cm lower. The stance is wide and lower, making more of a visual impact. Combine this with a large grille borrowed from the Tundra pickup truck and the Highlander has a very rugged, yet polished, look that

The cup holder is large and the centre armrest has a massive storage area inside; this is thanks to the removal of the stowaway seat that used to hide under the centre armrest. Now in the second row of seats there are three permanent seats or two captain’s chairs in the top Limited model. The previous hideaway idea was simple but not so comfortable. The biggest change takes place in the third row of seats, where three people can sit rather than just two. In addition,

there is 100L of cargo space behind the third row of seats offering much better functionality. It has all the interior amenities that one expects in a modern three-row crossover, even a system that allows the driver’s voice to be amplified through the stereo for easier conversations with passengers in the very back, but there seems to be a lack of sophistication compared to its competition. Drive The previous Highlander was available with a 4-cylinder engine and front wheel drive (FWD). It’s with a standard 3.5L V6 with 270hp, matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission, also with FWD. The starting price stays at $31,680; factoring in the backup camera there is good value here. When it arrives later this month, the base LE with all wheel drive (AWD) starts at $34,180. I think most people will opt for the LE with convenience package that includes 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, three-zone climate control, satellite radio and leather steering wheel to name a few. This brings the price up to $34,480 for the FWD and $36,980 for the AWD. On the road, the AWD system sends power to just the front wheels as often as possible with only 10 per cent of the torque shifting when cornering. The system has the ability to shift or lock up to 50 per cent of the power for better traction but limiting it to times

Question

when it is truly needed helps improve fuel economy. The other part of the fuel economy story is the all-new 6-speed automatic. The official fuel rating for the most popular AWD model is 11.5L/100km in the city and 8.2L on the highway, which is almost a full litre improvement in combined highway/city economy over the 2013 model. The rear suspension has been modified for a slightly more dynamic drive and improved ride. The steering is rather light and vague but the buyers of this type of product will appreciate the ease of use.

OF THE WEEK:

Verdict The Highlander is a functional vehicle for young buyers with kids and friends that need to get to practice and carry all the sports equipment that goes with it. Overall, a very good family crossover that will get the job done every day.

Safety Tip:

What do you think is the best special feature available in today’s cars and trucks? Please explain why you have made that decision.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK!

Go to drivewayBC.ca to submit your answer.

With challenging road conditions across the province, January is always one of the highest months for crashes in B.C. Take some small steps to prepare your vehicle for the conditions, such as checking your tire pressure – tires deflate more quickly in cold weather – and top up your vehicle’s anti-freeze, windshield washer fluid, and gas.

Signal It was a Christmas Miracle: that’s all I can put it down to. Pulled up behind a new sport-ute at a busy intersection, just a second before the light changed green. Honda Crosstour 2010 to 2013 The Honda Crosstour, introduced for the 2010 model year, is a stylish and more versatile hatchback version of its Accord stable mate. Taller than its sedan counterpart, the Crosstour has more ground clearance, a cavernous cargo area and it’s available in both front-drive and all-wheel-drive editions. A good vehicle match for an outdoor or active lifestyle owner, Crosstour retains the fuel economy and nice riding virtues of an Accord and adds the flexible storage options and the

functionality of a utility vehicle, without the “boxy” design drawback. Prices seem higher than the sedan because every Crosstour comes with a comparable level of equipment as the EX-L (top-line) edition of the sedan. It also comes with a 3.5-litre V6 engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission (no 4-cylinder 2010 to 2012). Called a J-series engine, this 4-valve/cylinder, and 60-degree V6 also has variable valve timing and it’s built at a Honda engine plant in Anna, Ohio.

A unique feature of this clever engine is its Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system that can seamlessly turn off one bank of cylinders when power demand is light, or transform it into a V4 for medium loads. Max power output is 271 horsepower and 254 ft-lb of torque. Its city/highway fuel economy rating is 11.7/7.2 and the all-wheeldrive system adds an extra 0.8 L/100km. A higher roofline translates into a significantly more spacious cabin that provides exra headroom for taller occupants. Handy release levers in its rear cargo area allow users to fold-down the rear seats remotely, when extra cargo space is needed. Seat-up cargo volume is 729 litres (25.7 cu-ft) and there’s another 54 litres (1.9 cu-ft) in a large under-floor storage box. The Crosstour was largely unchanged for the 2011 model year and other than the addition of a standard rearview camera, it was status quo again in 2012. For 2013, changes included a new lower-priced 4-cylilder edition and the V6 engine was coupled with a new 6-speed automatic transmission. Generally very good occupant protection ratings were marred by an IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) roof crush test, which

• Have your chimney cleaned twice a year, and inspect your flue vents regularly. To prevent creosote from building up in your chimney flue, don’t burn cardboard, trash or green wood. Instead, opt for well-seasoned logs and kindling. • Keep a Class A fire extinguisher on hand. Make sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are installed in the proper locations in your home, and test them regularly. • Don’t use gasoline, charcoal starter fluid or other flammable liquids to start your fire. • Teach your children to stay clear of a hot stove or burning fire. Never leave young children unattended when you’re operating

In Memoriam

In Memoriam

Always Louise Jane Choquette (Byrka) March 4, 1947 ~ January 7, 2013

It’s four in the morning and I am alone in our bed, I woke, from my sleep, with these words in my head, “I love you and miss you Sweetheart.”

Katie Kryger

August 9, 1926 ~ December 23, 2013

Leokadia (Katie) was the Àrst born of Edmund and Emma Dot]laf near :arsaw, Poland. They immigrated to Canada in June 1928 and homesteaded in the Gardenview area. She attended school and church and helped on her parents’ farm near the Kristof Kryger farm. As a result, Katie met her sweetheart 2swald (2ssie) Kryger and they married on June 26, 1946. Katie and 2ssie farmed in the Barrhead and Gardenview areas where they raised their four sons and were active in various church ministries. Katie and 2ssie semi retired to Stony Plain and then retired to Creston, BC, several years later. They often visited Kryger family members and friends. After 2ssie’s passing in 1997, Katie volunteered with the Serenity Group and the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS) and was a caregiver to Ed Shannon of Creston. Katie’s calendar was full of events, including the Hot Lunch Ministry at Creston New Life Christian Church. Katie’s Ànal move was back to Barrhead in July 2013 and into the Hillcrest Nursing Home. Katie is survived and will be sadly missed by her four sons 2scar (,rma), Larry (Lynn), Delbert (Helen), and Edmund (Trudy); 12 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren. She was an aunt to many nieces and nephews and sister in law to 2llie, Hilda (Allan), Anna, Josie, and Lily (Herb). Katie was predeceased by her infant sister Elsie; unnamed infant twins; 2 month old son Kenneth Rodney Kryger in 19 3; parents; younger brother Bruno in 1976; and husband of 1 years, 2ssie, on December 3, 1997, whom she dearly missed until her passing day. The family is grateful for everyone’s prayerful support and sympathy. The family thanks staff at BHCC for the care given during her last days. The Celebration of Life for Katie Kryger was at the Barrhead Church of God (5134-46 St.) with Pastor 5yan Sturge ofÀciating, at 1:00 pm on 'ecember 2 , 2013. I love you and need you and there are still tears, as I remember all the good times, we shared over years. I think of your laughter, and can still see your smile, and sometimes comes a memory, so you’re here for awhile. I’ll never forget the time we were allowed to share. You brought light to my darkness, and made hope from despair, Remember Sweetheart, I love you, and although you’re not here, I will relish the life that was ours through the years. In time I hope to see you again, but until that day comes, my life is a reflection of when we were one.

Forever in my thoughts Ron

Film examines mental illness, victims’ rights CRESTON VALLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Creston Valley Public Library film club kicks off the new year on Jan. 14 with Not Criminally Responsible, a feature documentary about violence, mental illness and the rights of victims. Directed by John Kastner, Not Criminally Responsible tells the story of a troubled young man who stabbed a complete stranger six times in a crowded shopping mall while gripped by psychosis. Twelve years later, his victim, who miraculously survived, is terrified to learn that the man responsible for his near-death is out, living in the community under supervision, applying for an absolute discharge, which, if successful, will mean he will no longer be required to take the

anti-psychotic drugs that control his mental illness. With unprecedented access to the patient, the victim and the mental institution, the film looks at both sides of the debate and puts a human face on the complex ethical issues raised. There has been a quiet revolution in recent years in the treatment of people with mental disorders who commit an act of violence. Not long ago, such patients would almost certainly have been considered hopelessly deranged and dangerous, and confined to an institution for the criminally insane for life. Not anymore. Today people declared not criminally responsible are frequently being released back onto the streets, a number of them potentially extremely dangerous men and women, not only

suicidal but homicidal. Most are incurable. In February 2013, Prime Minister Stephen Harper introduced the Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act, which addresses concerns raised by victims of crime with respect to accused persons found not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder. Does the legislation ensure that not criminally responsible accused people found to be too dangerous to release are no longer a threat to their victims or Canadian communities? Are not criminally responsible offenders receiving the treatment they need? This National Film Board production runs at the Creston Valley Public Library at 7 p.m. Jan. 14. Admission is free. Running time is 100 minutes. For more information, call the library at 250-428-4141.

Larger arena will allow riding program to expand THERAPEUTIC RIDING PROGRAM

Folks driving down Erickson Road might notice a cleared area in the orchard about 400 feet east of the Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program’s entrance driveway. Everyone at the Therapeutic Riding Program is very excited about this new project! Thanks to a grant from the Creston-Kootenay Foundation, the program has been able to start work on a new 100-by200-foot outdoor arena. There are several phases to this project and fundraising still needs to be done, but thanks to volunteers Terje Munkerud and his friends, who cut down the trees, and Creston Tree Service, which chipped up the branches, the first steps have been taken. Why is a new arena needed? The therapeutic riding program is growing every year thanks to the incredible support from the Creston Valley and beyond. Volunteer support is amazing, with folks helping out year after year and new volunteers joining the team on a regular basis. The program could not run without these dedicated,

enthusiastic volunteers, and they are much appreciated. In 2009, 26 therapeutic riders a week were participating in lessons. In 2013, 50 therapeutic riding lessons are given a week. That’s quite the increase. Since 2009, most of our resources have grown to meet this demand for more riding lessons: •The number of certified instructors has increased from one to six, with one more who has started training; and •The herd of therapy horses has changed from having five horses with an average age of 16.2 years old to having eight horses with an average age of 12.25 years old. The existing 65-by-125-foot arena is well used and is fully booked five days a week in the after school hours, when demand is highest for lessons. A larger riding arena will offer our riders the following benefits: •An extended riding season. An earlier start to the riding season will be possible as the new arena’s location gets much more spring sun exposure than the current arena. The snow is usually gone from the new location about two weeks before the current arena; •More space for lessons to

be taught. The new arena’s size will allow dividing the arena in two to create two 100-by100-foot riding arenas; •The larger arena will allow for setting up a more challenging obstacle course in a safe area; •The larger arena will be better for group lessons; •The 100-by-200-foot arena will allow for higher level dressage tests to be ridden. Dressage is the equestrian Paralympic sport. Several riders have already competed in Para-Equestrian Canada video competitions and have done well; and •Riders will be increasingly challenged by riding in a larger space. Thanks again to the CrestonKootenay Foundation for getting the arena project rolling. Everyone is looking forward to the new arena being operational by summer 2014. And thanks so much to all of our supporters who have generously helped to lay the foundation of this very successful program. For more information about the Therapeutic Riding Program, contact program director Michelle Whiteaway at 250-402-6793 or mwhiteaway@ hotmail.com, or visit cdscl. com/trp.htm.
