In the final episode of Arctic Air’s second season, Krista, angered at having been left out of the loop in a kidnapping, is last seen heading for a plane to Bali. She’s just told her business partner and off-and-on love interest, Bobby (played by heartthrob actor Adam Beach), that she doesn’t know when she’ll be back. The implication is that she just might not return. Fans of the CBC-TV drama can rest easy. Krista came back in Tuesday’s season premiere, returning “on a mission” to make some changes to the airline she co-owns with Bobby and her father, Mel. “I’m still in the show and I’m not just appearing via Skype from Bali,” Pascale Hutton, a Prince Charles Secondary School grad and star of Arctic Air, said in a telephone interview from Vancouver. “I guess that’s not a spoiler alert! “Krista comes back and a bunch of drama ensues. Her and Bobby and Mel try and sort out the dynamic of the airline and also the dynamic of their relationships. Krista comes back with a lot of new ideas about what she wants to do with the airline. That kind of ruffles a bunch of feathers and everybody has to kind of get on board because she’s a woman on a mission!” Hutton, who studied drama at the University of Alberta (where she met her husband, Danny Dorosh), is the daughter of retired teachers Elizabeth and Ian Hutton. Thank goodness for moms, she said. Elizabeth visits Vancouver, helping to care for her grandson, Ryu. See HUTTON, page 3

With at least 18 businesses, churches and homes broken into over the holiday season, it appears likely that Citizens on Patrol (COPs) will be reactivated. A group of 20 business people and concerned citizens crowded the coffee room at the RCMP detachment on Monday to discuss their concerns with Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan and Cpl. Charlotte Joa, who was the RCMP liaison with the previous COPs group, which disbanded quietly in 2013. At least four former COPs volunteers attended the meeting. “Until you are formally a COPs group, I can’t say yes or no to your continuing patrols,” Gollan told the group, some of whom have been doing early morning patrols in an effort to stifle the crime wave. “But you have a right to protect your own property.” Gollan told the Advance earlier on Monday that the RCMP has identified a person of interest in the break-ins. Described only as a male, about six feet tall, who wears dark clothing and carries a red backpack, Gollan said the possible suspect is known as an illegal drug user who would be undertaking criminal activity to support his lifestyle. When news of the break-ins spread around the community, a group of concerned citizens began to conduct informal early morning security rounds in their vehicles. At least one was stopped and questioned by police in an unmarked vehicle. See COPS, page 3

“It’s funny, John Reardon and I always joke because in the first season — I think it was the second episode — he and I had to do this, like, nude scene together. We barely knew each other and it was really awkward and uncomfortable. But now we know each other so well, and we’re quite good buddies, we are always debating about if they were to write us a scene like that again, whether it would be more awkward now! Or was it more awkward when we didn’t know each other? It’s hard to say!” The camaraderie that has grown among on- and offscreen personnel makes life easier, she said. Most filming days are scheduled for 12 hours, and she has to allow 90 minutes for hair and makeup before shooting starts. Add in the commute and it makes for a long day. “You put your head down and you just do it — you do the best you can,” she laughed. Hutton remains firmly grounded despite the success that has made her a nationally recognized TV star. “Any time I go back to Creston or even up the lake I always feel that the community that I was a part of when I was growing up, and that I’m still connected to through my parents, really, really supported me and informed where I’m at now,” she said. “I feel that from them — that there is this true investment in me as a person and where I’m at now.”

beautiful time for us to go up there and capture that on film.” She is clearly pleased with the way the hit series is progressing. “I really think this season the storytelling is head and shoulders above where we were in seasons one and two. It’s always hard when you’re starting a series and you’re trying to sort out what works and what doesn’t work, what people respond to and what they don’t respond to. I just feel like our creator, Ian Weir, and one of our new head writers, John Cooksy, the two of them put their heads together — went back to basics and wanted to refine what the show was — keep all the good stuff that was happening in the first seasons and make it more concise. It’s more of the emotional journey of the characters with the action-adventure journeys. There’s a marriage between the two. One informs the other and vice versa. “I don’t want to say anything about our mid-season episode (number 6), but when I first read that script my heart was beating — it was so intense and so alive with what was happening with my character and Bobby’s. The intensity of the situation they’re in — it’s really life and death — and they deal with that head-on. It amps up the drama of the show to a whole new level.” While Hutton describes the cast and crew as “just like a family”, the familiarity brings its own challenges.

Larry Binks says the bitterness that has arisen from his efforts to get certified fire protection to property owners in West Creston has taken him by surprise. “Sadly, this has kind of split the community,” the Regional District of Central Kootenay director for Area C said on Monday. “People who want fire service have organized and people who don’t want it have organized — it’s gotten kind of ugly.” Binks and those who want fire protection have been attempting to get sufficient support — more than half of the properties and more than half of the total property value must be represented on the yes side before the taxation can be implemented. Fire protection would be provided by WynndelLakeview, Canyon-Lister and

Town of Creston fire departments. Binks arranged for a two-week time extension for the petition when he realized that the RDCK offices would be closed for seven of the last 15 days of December. The petition process now must be complete by Jan. 15. “That created a real storm,” he said. “I wanted to make sure that everyone had sufficient opportunity to get their petitions in if they want fire protection — this is about making sure all taxpayers have their say.” With less than a week remaining to garner sufficient support, he estimated that 42 per cent of property owners representing 48 per cent of the total property value have signed in favour of fire protection. “But I would want to see a clear majority — maybe 55-60 per cent — before I sign a taxation bylaw,” he said.

Now she has only one job, but it’s an allconsuming one for seven months a year. “We have my mom and a nanny living with us right now so that’s a huge help,” she said. “Then my mother-in-law is going to come for the last month of filming to help. We call in all the troops. We definitely can’t do it alone. “ Dorosh is a member of the Vancouver Police Department, but the stress of juggling professional and home life is worth it, she said. “I’ve never seen him happier than he is. He’s got a great squad and he’s in a district that he really wants to be in. He’s just so fulfilled and invigorated — it’s really nice.” For the star of television and movies, Pascale’s balance at home comes in large chunks, not in the daily routines of parents with more regular routines. “I had a quieter first half of the year where I was just kind of focused on being at home,” she said. “And then once we started filming it has ramped up to lightning speed in our house. It’s really crazy. The show is really busy this year for me, and it’s fantastic. I love what’s happening on the show and I really think this is our best season. But it definitely makes for a busy household, that’s for sure.” Shooting the third season of Arctic Air (which airs Tuesdays on CBC) started in July and continued into December. “We did it a little bit differently this year. We started here in Vancouver and filmed in the studio for a while. Near the end of August, because of what those episodes required in terms of environment, we ended up going to Winnipeg instead of Yellowknife, only because the episode revolves around a dam and we couldn’t get access to any dams around Yellowknife. “Then we went up to Yellowknife near the end of September. If you’re going to go to Yellowknife, that’s the time to go. It’s really spectacular — the leaves are all turning and the weather is warm but not hot. It was a beautiful,

Break-ins keep RCMP busy over holidays BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

A rash of break-ins to businesses, churches and residences kept Creston RCMP members unusually busy over the holiday season. At least 18 break-ins are suspected to be the work of one male, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. Police responded to a total of 75 calls from Dec. 30-Jan. 5, Gollan said. December 30 •Break-ins to a Canyon Street restaurant and an 11th Avenue North business were reported. •A Simmons Road resident reported the fraudulent use of his credit card. •A bicycle was stolen in a break-in to a Northwest Boulevard business. •“Try Googling for information before you send money for an Internet transaction,” is Gollan’s advice after a Canyon Street resident reported sending money to the U.S. to purchase a vehicle that apparently doesn’t exist. When police received the complaint, they Googled the contact information of the “seller” and found it is connected with numerous fraud complaints. •No theft was reported in a break-in to a Northwest Boulevard business. •Shots were reported in the Devon Street area.

He was arrested and held in cells until sober. •Police received a complaint about a female who refused to leave a Cook Street business when asked. •Police mediated a dispute between a mother and son on 22nd Avenue North. •A male was reported to breaking his curfew conditions on Northwest Boulevard. •After responding to a complaint about an erratic red Ford pickup, police found a passenger in the vehicle was wanted on an arrest warrant. He was arrested. •A report was made from the Kootenay Bay ferry landing about a possibly mentally unbalanced male falling off his motorized bicycle, which he was planning to ride to Kelowna. Police determined he had found a place to stay for the night. •Police suspect that “gunshots” reported on Crawford Creek Road at

A 15-day Christmas break didn’t slow down the Creston Valley Thunder Cats — in the four games following their time off break, the Eddie Mountain Division-leading Thunder Cats lost only one game, scoring a total of 25 goals in one away and three home games. Having only a single practice prior to the Dec. 30 game against the Kimberley Dynamiters, “we had a pretty slow start to the game, but got better as the game went on,” said head coach Josh Hepditch. A goal by Carson Cartwright tied the score 1-1 after the first period, but the Thunder Cats were still down 4-2 after an unassisted goal by Maverick Lynes in the second. Only Thunder Cat Brandon Formosa scored in the third period, resulting in a 4-3 loss — despite 46 shots on the Kimberley goal. “Their goaltender played extremely well, and made some unbelievable saves,” said Hepditch. “It was the best goalie performance I’ve seen this year.” With three post-holiday wins, the Dynamiters are closing the gap on the Thunder Cats, sitting five points behind with 43, followed closely by the Fernie Ghostriders, with 40. The Thunder Cats had a better showing in the next night’s game hosting the Ghostriders — Fernie’s fourth game in four days — which they won 7-2. “We wanted to try and get those points and get our spread a little bit higher,” said Hepditch. “They had the mindset to throw everything at

the net and found a way to score some goals.” Logan Styler, Formosa (power play) and Justin Post scored the first three goals for the Thunder Cats, followed by two from the Ghostriders before the end of the first period. Styler and Connor Ward each scored in the second period, with Ethan Rusnack and Marcel Fuchs scoring in the third. “Getting into third period, we had a good lead and you could tell they were low on energy and jump,” said Hepditch. Friday’s game in Invermere saw the Thunder Cats score seven goals in one game again, this time defeating the Columbia Valley Rockies 7-1. “We kind of went in with the mindset that if the season were to end today, that’s who we play in playoffs,” said Hepditch. “They came out strong in the first period, and we matched their intensity and sort of upped it.” The game was scoreless until 9:20 in the first period, when Matti Jmaeff scored on a power play, followed by Trevor Hanna (power play) and Ward (unassisted). Lynes and Styler scored in the second period, and in the third, both scored again after a Rockies goal. Styler earned three points in that game, having assisted with Jmaeff’s first-period goal. “He’s been doing very good offensively, and we think we can get more out of him, and he’s starting to show that now,” said Hepditch. On Saturday, the 100 Mile House Wranglers visited Creston for a game the Thunder Cats won 8-1, their second win over the South Cariboo team. Despite the high score, the win required a lot of effort. “That was probably the hardest another team has come in and played us in a while,” said Hepditch. “They were definitely ready to come in and get two points.”

game, while Michalovsky again proved valuable, stopping 31 shots by the Wranglers. The 17-year-old goalie is now ranked seventh in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. “We definitely had a good team effort in that game,” said Hepditch. “We kept up our pace and they slowly dropped off.” This weekend, the Thunder Cats play three games, visiting the Rockies on Friday, hosting the Revelstoke Grizzlies on Saturday and visiting the Spokane Braves on Sunday. “It’s never easy to go there and win,” said Hepditch of the Rockies, who hold fourth place in the division. “They’ve got a team that plays hard. If we don’t show up, any team can win any night.” Saturday’s game will be the Thunder Cats’ second against the Grizzlies, whom they beat 11-2 in November. “We beat them pretty good up in their arena,” said Hepditch. “We’re definitely going to need good effort to beat them.” As the third game in a threegame weekend, Hepditch expects Sunday’s game against the Braves to be a tough one. “They’re battling with Grand Forks for the final spot [in the Neil Murdoch Division],” said Hepditch.

My week, the first full week of a new year, started with an email that had me smiling and in tears at the same time. The story actually starts more than 40 years ago, when I was a junior and senior high school student in Bowness, a Calgary suburb. I was part of an advanced class that had a number of perks, not least that we always had the very best of teachers (admittedly, there were a few duds, but that’s part of what makes public education a genuine reflection of life in a community). One of the many excellent teachers that made an indelible impression on my memory was Jim Campbell. Now, Jim was not among those with whom I had a close personal connection. He was not like one, a counsellor whom I would later visit at his new school after he transferred from Bowness (he later would become the provincial NDP leader and an MLA — I was a Progressive Conservative and we agreed on nothing, except the fact that we liked each other). Or like another teaching couple, whose home I would visit with friends after we graduated (coincidentally, the male half of the duo would go onto become an NDP MLA, too). No, my connection to Jim Campbell was relegated to the classroom, and to witnessing his interactions with other students and teachers. Jim was a no-nonsense teacher of the sort that could maintain tight control in his classroom without really being thought of as a disciplinarian. A couple of classroom memories returned as I was reminded of him before Christmas. In one of our Grade 10 social studies classes we were required to do a project and present it to the class. One of my friends arrived with a long-play record and launched

Determining the best term

Choosing the mortgage term that is right for you can be a challenging proposition for even the savviest of homebuyers. By understanding mortgage terms and what they mean in dollars and cents, you can save the most money and choose the term that is right for you. The first consideration when comparing various mortgage terms is to understand that a longer term generally means a higher corresponding interest rate, and a shorter term generally means a lower corresponding interest rate. While this generalization might lead you to believe that a shorter term is always the preferred option, this is not necessarily the case. While you may be paying a slightly higher interest rate for the 10-year term versus a three-year term, you have the security of knowing that your interest rate and payment is going to be the same for 10 years instead of three. The best approach is to tailor your mortgage term to your risk tolerance. For those who need stability in their payments, a longer term is generally the best option. This means that you know exactly what interest rate you will be paying for a longer period. If paying your mortgage each month places you close to the financial edge of

your comfort zone, you may want to opt for a longer-term mortgage, perhaps 10 years, so that you can ensure that you will be able to afford your

It also depends on whether you have a fixed or floating interest rate, and whether rates have gone up or down. Choosing the right mortgage term is a unique decision for each individual. By understanding your personal financial situation and your tolerance for risk, a mortgage professional can assist you in choosing the mortgage term that will work the best.
