‘Make Valley pay into TransLink’ Mayor Daykin says eastern cities getting ‘free ride’ by Je f f Nage l Black Press

Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin thinks Fraser Valley residents should be forced to make some contribution to TransLink because they also benefit from Metro’s transit system. He suggested a fuel tax of a few cents per litre imposed in the Fraser Valley would be one way for that region to pay an appropriate amount in the name of fairness. “I think they’re getting a bit of a free ride,” Daykin said, citing the ability of residents there to ride the West Coast Express commuter train to downtown Vancouver from Mission, or to drive to one of TransLink’s park-and-rides that connect to SkyTrain. Mission contributes $770,000 per year to support West Coast Express service, in recognition of the station there, but other Fraser Valley communities pay nothing. See Tax, p5

Ridge motorists face longest grind Average commute time is 35 minutes by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter

Pity poor Maple Ridge motorists, stuck in traffic the longest among Metro Vancouver commuters. According to the 2011 Census, drivers here languish the longest in their daily travels – an average of 35 minutes. That’s more than Coquitlam and

Port Coquitlam motorists, who travel 33 minutes to work, and Surrey residents, who spend 31 minutes behind the wheel. The numbers came from the National Household Survey, conducted as part of Statistic Canada’s 2011 Census. The average commute time in Metro Vancouver is 28 minutes, according to the survey. For Mayor Ernie Daykin, the word ‘average’ is key, because many people spend way longer behind the wheel. “There’s a whole bunch of reasons why people choose to commute,” he

said Wednesday. Longer commuting times could be a result of geography, with Maple Ridge one of the more outlying regions. “What we need to do is get folks out of their cars,” he said. “What needs to happen, we need a direct RapidBus.” Daykin, Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters and Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore are working on exactly that. The trio met in December to see if there is a way to speed up the arrival of a RapidBus service in the area, so it can tie in with the opening of the

sure our citizens benefit from it, as well. We all pay into it. It’s just at the talking stage at this point,” Walters said. Part of the challenge will be finding enough room for a RapidBus lane on Lougheed Highway. RapidBus can have either its own lane or have traffic signal priority and share space with cars. A westbound bus and high-occupancy vehicle lane was added to the north side of Lougheed Highway in 2010, between 200th Street and the Pitt River Bridge.

T

he average Lotto 6/49 draw brings a chance of winning of about one in 14 million, on a single play. Imagine if the chance was one in 24.

That’s the stage two Maple Ridge brothers got to, as finalists in a million-dollar worldwide contest to design a Superbowl ad for Doritos tortilla chips. Graham and Nelson Talbot are up-andcoming cinematographers who run Talbot Twins Cinematography. They created a funny ad, with a pair of canoeists dropping some chips onto the water – at Whonnock Lake – and having a mermaid come out of the water to take their bait. The ad ends with their catch mounted on the wall over a fireplace. “We like dark humour,” smiles Nelson. The online voting has now pared the contest down to the final five, and they have been eliminated. “It’s probably the closest we’ll get to a million dollars,” lamented Graham. “The competition was really stiff,” added Nelson. “Looking at the Top 5 – you don’t feel disappointed in losing to them.” They don’t have a big business yet, at 24 years old and having graduated from Simon Fraser University in 2011. But what they do have is some high-end camera gear, an eye for an impactful shot, and a sense of humor that creates those humorous ads that give you a chuckle. They won $1,000 for their Doritos efforts, and some bragging rights – their ad was chosen from among thousands in the worldwide contest, which garnered submissions from 30 different countries. An ad agency out of Toronto is interested in working with them. They also got some notice from a lumber company that complained the ad was too much like one they produced, which involved a mermaid and one of the same actors from their Superbowl contest ad. But the Talbots said there is no copyright on mermaids, and the fact they used the same actor was just coincidence. They are not being sued. This latest contest also gave them more affirmation that they are on the right track. They have already been getting noticed for their work on feature films, music videos and commercial videos. Their passion for this work goes back to fifth grade, when they cast their friends as Star Wars characters and made like George Lucas. “We did a lot of movie remakes back then,” recalls Graham. Sometimes they could shoot a school project at Langley Fine Arts instead of writing it, and one of the brothers had to be mummified during a study of ancient Egypt. Now the Talbot Twins are wrapped up in their budding careers. They have so far shot three feature films. One, a dark comedy called Lawrence and Holloman, has been winning awards on the Canadian film festival circuit. People from town who see the film will recognize Memorial Peace Park, the former Zellers and other locations around Maple Ridge.

(Above) The Talbot twins, Nelson and Graham, were Top-5 finalists for a Super Bowl ad for Doritos; (below) their other work includes movies, music videos and commercials. Another film is Primary, which has not yet been released, and Patterson’s Wager – an “ultra-low budget Sasquatch film shot in the forests of Maple Ridge and Mission. The latter will be part of the Vancouver Film Festival. They have also done music videos, and they won a Leo Award, for the best in B.C., for the video Jitters, a Dirty ’30s gangster story, for Madchild. It was also nominated for a Muchmusic video award, but didn’t take any hardware. A much darker video, Positronic for Pack a.d., is another of their favourite rock videos. Both appear on Muchmusic and MTV, as well as others they have shot. Seeing it on television for the first time was “pretty awesome.” Both of the videos, and other samples of their work, can be seen on their website (talbottwins.com). When they don’t have paid work, they do spec commercials through the website poptent.com. It is a crowd sourcing website that allows companies promoting a new product to solicit ads. The businesses post a creative brief, and samples of other videos they like, and wait for new creations to come in. The winning entries can take down anywhere from $12,000 to $7,500. There are lesser prizes for runners up. The Talbot twins make them as affordably as possible. They get cheap labour – they buy actors dinner. One brother dates a makeup art-

ist, and the other a production designer. They always go for the laugh, and their comedic entries are popular. It has been a nice little source of income, and they have had seven first-place finishes. Generally, they are up against anywhere from 40 to 300 competing entries.

Their first was for Famous Footwear, and it featured a pair of ratty old shoes walking themselves down the crowded hallways of their alma mater – Langley Fine Arts. They got $7,500 for that one. Then Bud Light liked one that was worth $10,000. But the brewers wanted them to reshoot the commercial with a less portly actor, so as not to leave the impression that beer drinkers gain weight. They got a bonus $5,000 to produce the slimmed-down version. “We’re fairly confident now that we can finish in the money,” said Nelson, noting that

most of the competition is amateurish. “If there are 100 videos, there will be five that make you nervous.” Generally, director of photography is one position on a film, but the twins bounce ideas back and forth like Daniel and Henrik Sedin against the Edmonton Oilers. “We’re so in tune, we can really work well together,” said Nelson. Rarely has there been a heels-dug-in argument. “We always go on the idea: ‘Convince me your idea is better.’” If it appears Maple Ridge’s increasingly famous twins look a bit like the province’s most famous twin brothers, just wait until the Stanley Cup playoffs roll around. That’s when they immerse themselves in their Sedinery, growing their red goatees out, precisely trimming them to resemble Hank and Dank’s matching facial hair, and donning Canucks jerseys with numbers 22 and 33. They have had people stop them and ask for photographs. The twins could work apart. Indeed, either or both could likely draw a steady income in the film industry as a simple camera operator. But they have bigger dreams, and they create some powerful symmetry. As Graham puts it: “Something is gained – and it’s more than just the sum of two parts – when we work together.”

Parents concerned with Canada’s dropping math scores have started a petition to have educators return to teaching basic math skills. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development measures the academic ability of 15-year-olds in 65 countries. Overall, Canada ranked 13th. The Canadian score in math of 518 still ranked above the average score of 494, but it has slipped 14 points in nine years. Tara Houle has started an online petition demanding the end of the Math Makes Sense curriculum in B.C., “and return to common sense mathematics in elementary school classrooms.” “Common sense math has been replaced with discovery based strategies … and our children are failing the grade. As a result, parents are either faced with the dilemma to enrol their children in math learning centres to receive the basic math instruction they need, switch over to private schools, or despair that their children will not learn these necessary math skills that they desperately need

later on,” she says in the petition preamble. The petition sets out that children demonstrate mastery in multiplication tables to 10, adding and subtracting in columns and long division. They should understand basic fractions, and use paper and pencil as opposed to computer games to learn math skills, says the petition, which began Dec. 19. Houle is part of a group of concerned parents from the Western Initiative for Strengthening Education in Math, or Wise Math. That group was started by university professors in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Local parents may not be so concerned. “I haven’t heard that math is an issue,” said Kellie Marquet, president of the Maple RidgePitt Meadows District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC). She has three children in the local school system, in Grades 12, 11 and 8. The youngest went to the Environmental School, which uses activities and natural exploration as learning opportunities. Without desks in rows in front of a white board, there was some question from parents whether the environmental school students would be ready for high school. Her son is in Grade 8, and having no trouble,

said Marquet. “I’m of the ‘happy kids learn’ idea. “I don’t think parents here are complaining about math.” George Serra, president of the Maple Ridge Teachers Association, said there can be a tendency for some parents to want their children to be educated in the same way they were. His parents were educated in a poor region of Portugal, and received only four years of schooling. “But they would comment that they got more out of school in four years than I got in 12.” “There will always be a group who think things are going down the wrong path.” Alberta mother Nhung Tran-Davies, a physician and author, leads the charge in that province, asking the education ministry for changes in how math is taught. “When the laws of physics and mathematics are unyielding, so should mastering the fundamentals,” she said. “Mathematics, a discipline defined by precision, gaining efficiency and proficiency through emphasis, memory work and repeated practice empowers our children to truly appreciate the beauty of numbers in everyday life,” said Tran-Davies. ‘Payment from Valley would be modest’ Tax from front

Daykin said licence plate checks of vehicles at the West Coast Express parking lot in Mission have found 30 to 40 per cent belong to Abbotsford residents. Despite Mission’s contribution, service on the Mission-Haney WCE leg is heavily subsidized by TransLink, which pegs its net cost at $1 to $2 million. Daykin also pointed to the heavily used express bus over the Port Mann Bridge from the Carvolth park-and-ride in northwest Langley to SkyTrain in New Westminster. “I wonder how many from up the Valley drive there, park their car and hop on the bus and have access to all the transit system? It’s hard to be-

lieve it’s all Langley people.” This month’s doubling of Port Mann Bridge tolls to $3 for most drivers may spur even more Fraser Valley motorists to park and ride transit instead, he added. Metro Vancouver households pay hefty amounts to TransLink regardless of whether they use transit. TransLink gets $235 per year in property tax from the average Metro home as well as 17 cents for every litre of gas sold within the region. Fares generate the biggest piece of the $1.45-billion budget. Any payment from Valley communities would be very modest, Daykin said, and would not go far to raising the extra bil-

lions of dollars TransLink needs to expand service. “It’s not going to be tens of millions of dollars,” he said. “I’m not delusional. But there should be an acknowledgement that there’s a benefit of our system in Metro to the Valley.” Daykin said he recently made that pitch to Transportation Minister Todd Stone, but got a “cool” response. Fraser Valley Regional District board chair Sharon Gaetz said there’s no justification. The Chilliwack mayor said studies show few people – about 10 per cent of trips by locals – leave the FVRD to shop, work or play in Metro, and most of them go only to Surrey or Langley. “Given the small num-

bers, it wouldn’t be reasonable to have our taxes go to support that,” Gaetz said. She also called it an “apples and oranges” comparison because of the way TransLink was created in 1999. Metro taxpayers were absolved of the requirement to pay tax to support hospital capital projects in return for them taking responsibility for regional transit costs. The FVRD’s transit costs, in contrast, are mostly subsidized by BC Transit, but Fraser Valley residents still pay for hospital capital. If the Fraser Valley was to pay into TransLink, Gaetz suggested, Metro taxpayers ought to resume paying hospital taxes as well.

Exempt your child from the FSA Dear parents,

We work hard to give your children the best education possible. We celebrate with them when they master a new concept and help them think creatively when tackling a tricky problem. But standardized tests like the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) in Grades 4 and 7 take away from those wonderful moments of learning.

‘Not enough people for WCE train expansion’ “We need density for that to run all day.” Maybe in 10 years, West Coast Express could run a dozen times a day, he added. Walters, though, says mayors have told TransLink they want expanded train service to be part of the negotiations. A consultant helping Maple Ridge with its transportation plan also told council last year that people want more frequent West Coast Express service.

The data is also misused to rank schools, which puts pressure on teachers to teach to the test, instead of to students’ interests and needs. That’s why teachers in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows recommend you send a letter to your school principal requesting that your child be exempted from the FSA.

In Ontario, retired elementary school teacher Teresa Murray stated a petition at the end of December, after her tutoring work left her alarmed with the gaps in student learning. In Manitoba, math professors led a grassroots movement to return to basic math methods. Quebec students lead Canada in math, maintaining PSIT scores on par with Japan. Daykin said he hasn’t advocated, held meetings or written letters calling for expansion of the rail service since he and other mayors lobbied for more following the successful daily trips during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Daykin said Maple Ridge doesn’t have enough people to justify increased West Coast Express service.

won’t have to worry about the cost. Maple Ridge’s own transportation plan, now under review, also includes a RapidBus route on Lougheed Highway to downtown Maple Ridge. That could be a precursor to a light rail line, also in the district’s long-term plan. But Walters doesn’t want to see that allotted to transit at the expense of motor vehicles. Instead, a RapidBus service likely would require two new lanes in either direction. Nor does she want any new RapidBus service to come at the expense of the No. 701 bus, which meanders through Pitt Meadows on its way to Braid SkyTrain station in New Westminster. “That’s something people rely on a lot.” Walters said Port Coquitlam and TransLink will cooperate on a feasibility study this year, meaning Pitt Meadows

THE NEWS/opinion News Views

Reducing the risk Recent reports of death and illness stemming from the start of the influenza season underlines the importance of vaccinations. The most severe cases so far have been in Alberta, where health officials estimate the virus has killed 10 people. In B.C., while the numbers are not as high, Fraser Health reports 30 people in hospital, all suspected of having the H1N1 strain of the flu. One person has died, but it is not confirmed if H1N1 is to blame. To many, H1N1 is a familiar name. They remember the widespread concern when it was first identified as the “swine flu” in 2009. They also remember that despite dire warnings of an impending pandemic, the virus passed without much damage. For health officials, that success was a direct result of the intensive vaccination efforts made worldwide. To skeptics, however, it was just another sign of unwarranted alarm and manufactured panic. Indeed, it is easy to under-appreciate the flu threat. After all, who hasn’t contracted the virus at some point? For many it’s simply part of winter and nothing worse than a nasty cold. What they forget is the fact that influenza is not some static disease. It is constantly changing to undermine the defenses we build. If successful, the consequences can be devastating. In 1918 the most deadly conflict the world had ever seen was nearing its bloody end. But as tragic as the First World War was, more people died in the flu pandemic that struck that year than in the entire war. Estimates put the global death toll at between 50 million and 100 million people. In Canada, the disease claimed 50,000 lives – many of them young and in their prime of life. Many would like to think that the scale of that pandemic is ancient history. But the fact is the only thing preventing its resurgence are the actions we take to contain an outbreak. We have the tools at our disposal to reduce the risk. But it’s up to us to use them. – Black Press

How is prohibition working for us? T

hroughout several decades, various levels of government, supposedly for our own good, have imposed sanctions on various activities and products. Oddly enough, the reality of the foregoing flies in the face of Sidewinder the first precepts of municipal law, which Sandy Macdougall state that the first consideration given to any bylaw must be public health and safety. When it comes to alcohol, drugs and gambling, public health and safety seem to be the last things any municipal council member considers. A question which comes to mind is, how effective have any of these regulations and sanctions been? For centuries the use and abuse of alcohol has had a devastating impact on communities and individuals, but it was largely unregulated. People could make their own wine, beer and other spirits, but governments derived little or no revenue. Eventually it dawned on the wise rulers of various countries that they were missing the revenue boat and began to impose tax sanctions on the manufacture, distribution and sale of alcoholic products. Then along came the self-righteous American federal government, which imposed a total ban on such alcoholic

activities and products. And thus our American neighbours encouraged the speedy development of organized crime and large scale bootleggers, who, along with a majority of American and Canadian citizens, didn’t think much of the sanctions. Prohibition created fortunes in Canada and the United States and also helped establish and fund political dynasties, which still flourish. This was also an era that witnessed the burgeoning of social and public health problems and the attendant public costs related to alcohol abuse. Prohibition eventually ended, but the social and medical costs of alcohol abuse continued unabated. Our sagacious government leaders still cling to the system which created huge revenue streams from the sale and regulations governing alcohol. Those same leaders seem to somehow be unaware of the even greater health care and social costs relating to alcohol use and abuse. The resulting problems stemming from the imposition of poorly considered sanctions on alcohol have been largely ignored by politicians who are now blindly following the same path with drugs. Sanctions and regulations and the current rhetoric about relaxation of those sanctions and the creation of revenue streams from drugs all ignore the gross social and public health costs associated with drugs. Then along came casinos and almost every level of government in almost every political jurisdiction in North America

jumped on the legalization of gambling bandwagon, all the while ignoring the resultant social chaos gambling can and does cause in too many families in too many communities. And all because of the lucrative government revenues derived from gambling. The question remains unanswered, how is all of this working for us? Instead of trying to determine the government’s role in what drives so many people to abuse alcohol and/or drugs, politicians simply lick their lips and dive into the revenue trough that has been created through the legalization of gambling. Governments everywhere are too busy counting the incoming flow of dollars to notice that even greater amounts of money are being spent trying to deal with the social and health care chaos created by the ever-expanding use and abuse of alcohol, drugs and gambling. Recently the Supreme Court of Canada offered its own contribution to the destruction of the social fabric of this country by throwing out most of the legal sanctions against prostitution. Strangely enough, the virtual legalization of prostitution probably won’t find much support in political ranks because too many politicians think it is their sole right to profit from the populace. Again, how’s all this working for us? Sodom and Gomorrah couldn’t hold a candlestick to modern day Canada. Sandy Macdougall is a retired journalist and former district councillor.

Any resident who has the right to vote also has the right (and some might say the responsibility) to make their views known on the key issues facing local government.

‘We pay more’ Curtis Wiebe · University of the Fraser Valley: Re: Make Fraser Valley pay into TransLink, Maple Ridge mayor says. Also people getting on at the Mission station of the West Coast Express already pay a huge amount more for the 28-day pass than any other station. This guy needs to get a clue. A rider from Mission pays $100 dollars more for a 28-day pass than the same rider from Port Haney station. • Collin MacMillan · Chilliwack, British Columbia: Re: Make Fraser Valley pay into TransLink, Maple Ridge mayor says. Fine, expand the West Coast Express and SkyTrain to Chilliwack then. Until we get service, they get no tax money from us.

M

unicipal finance manager Paul Gill has, thankfully, publicly sounded the alarm about sprawl. Maple Ridge needs to change the way it grows. Undoubtedly Mr. Gill has explained this significant problem in more depth to our council members. So far, Cycling however, they’re happily Jackie Chow continuing down the same sprawling path, seemingly oblivious to the horrendous long-term cost they’re saddling the district with. What voters need to understand is that it’s imperative that we put a stop to the way our municipality – as so many others – continues to expand into our forests and agricultural lands. We just can’t afford it. Much of the land now being eaten up by is not terribly suitable for development to begin with, often located on hillsides, with many gullies and fish-bearing streams and other features that make it even more costly to develop, maintain and service. While it’s my role to advocate for and promote cycling, it’s obvious that HUB’s mission is sometimes pretty difficult to accomplish in suburbs like Maple Ridge, where car-dependent sprawl shows no signs of slowing down. Cycling is just part of the bigger picture of creating more livable and sustainable communities, and a well-planned, livable and efficient community is what’s needed to make cycling a more appealing option for most. Nothing works as well as some estimates of possible savings by other municipali-

ties to make people think about how it might be affecting their own property tax bills right now, and even more so in the future. Halifax estimates that by building 25 per cent of new homes in the urban core instead of the present 16 per cent, it will be able to save about $66 million in the next 20 years. Calgary calculated that by building 50 per cent of new homes in the urban core as opposed to the present 16 per cent, it will be able to save about $1,760 million in the next 20 years. In Edmonton, costs related to just 17 of more than 40 new planned developments are expected to exceed tax revenues by nearly $4 billion over the next 60 years. In London, Ontario, capital costs in the case of sprawl are estimated to be $2.7 billion higher, and operating costs $1.7 billion more than for compact growth over a 50-year period. OK, so we know now that we’re all paying for certain costs of sprawl through our property taxes or rents, such as more extensive infrastructure, emergency services, libraries, community centres. But there are many ways other than through property taxes that sprawl is also costing us dearly. The cost of providing gas, electricity, phone and postal service to our homes is also shared by all, which means more subsidies for sprawling developments. Subsidies for cars is a really big one, let’s face it. Only a little more than half of the $29 billion spent on Canadian roads every year is paid by drivers; $13 billion is subsidized. That’s close to $400 for every man, woman and child in Canada, and more than $600 for every road motor vehicle. Some entitled drivers cry foul when a

tiny fraction of that is spent on cycling. Those who drive into Vancouver every day from east Maple Ridge should probably instead be thankful for the contribution made by cyclists to the subsidy they receive for every trip. The subsidy for cars certainly doesn’t end there. Free parking is also a huge one – according to U.S. estimates in the billions of dollars per year in Canada – again making the choice for individuals to live in the suburbs even more appealing. Instead of ‘user pay’, we all pay whether we use it a lot, a little, or not at all. The indirect costs of automobile use (such as emissions, congestion, noise), estimated to be $27 billion per year, is yet another cost that is not just borne by drivers, but by all of society, including and especially by those who live in town centres and don’t drive themselves. Increased numbers of deaths and injuries as a result of motor vehicle accidents constitute another cost, in which case pedestrians and cyclists actually pay a much higher price than motorists. Even though drivers are to blame in at least half of all cases, they’re often the ones loudly blaming the more vulnerable victims. The rise in obesity-related illnesses and deaths due to over-reliance on motor vehicles leads to significantly higher health care costs, which – again – we all pay for. We’re also paying for it through loss of eco-systems and agricultural land. It’s a nation-wide problem. Provincial and federal governments need to change policies and legislation that encourage sprawl and limit the ways municipalities can presently deal with the issue. Jackie Chow is a member of the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows chapter of HUB.

They’ve seen “firsthand that a large amount of the material has not been digitized before it was destroyed. “There’s been no systematic inventory done beforehand.” Neither were scientists consulted before library material was removed. The federal government is in the process of paring the number of Fisheries libraries across Canada from 11 to only four, with one of the four remaining locations to be the Institute of Ocean Sciences in Sidney, on Vancouver Island. However, that’s meant that the library at the Pacific Biological Station is no longer there. “That library is gone. It’s already been disman-

The District of Maple Ridge invites tenders for the following projects:

According to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, consolidating its libraries and digitizing content means minimal change. Fisheries says that’s because most users already access the information online, while those who actually prowl the stacks, make up only two per cent of users. “There will be no changes to the size or scope of the collection,” the department says on its website. But fisheries scientists who use the libraries say the contrary, according

by the department,” Shea said. In 2011, for example, more than 95-percent of the total documents provided to users were provided digitally through self-service or library-staff virtually assisted service. Shea said: “Duplicate materials, including books, from the libraries being consolidated were offered to other libraries and third parties if they wanted them. “They were also offered to the DFO staff on site at the library, then offered to the general public, and finally were recycled in a “green” fashion if there were no takers. It is absolutely false to insinuate that any books were burnt.” Local NDPer Craig Speirs takes the word of the scientists over those of his rival Conservative politicians. “You can’t believe a bloody thing these people say anymore. They’ve lost the trust of the public.” Speirs said the department has digitized only a small percentage of the records lost. Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge MP Randy Kamp, parliamentary secretary to the Fisheries minister, was out of town and unavailable for comment.

tled,” Reynolds said. He has never used the library, but says the type of records it would have contained would be raw data showing baseline information. “That’s the type of material that these types of materials are important for.” He doesn’t want to speculate what is motivating the government. “The intent and what’s happening on the ground are not the same thing. We are not improving access to scientific information. It’s a setback.” He also wondered if it was legal under copyright laws to digitize and make available online non-Fisheries materials. The proper process would have been to put everything online, then show the public the libraries before any dismantling to prove that records were preserved. The controversy prompted Fisheries Minister Gail Shea to say that “serious misinformation” was spread about the library consolidation. However, the release doesn’t directly state that documents have not been destroyed. “All materials for which DFO has copyright will be preserved

Connie Baker doesn’t know how she contracted Hepititis C.

Hope in new Hep C treatment Drug Sovaldi has 90 per cent cure rate by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter

F

or 20 years Connie Baker has lived with Hepatitis C. The virus can cause liver failure and death, but she has maintained good health, and so hasn’t sought treatment. Up to now, the side effects of Hep C drugs, using Interferon and Ribaviran, and the yearlong treatment, made it something to be avoided if possible for many people with Hep C. But the threat of sudden liver failure loomed from a disease Baker calls “the silent killer.” “I’ve seen friends who were so sick – who waited too long [to get treatment], and who have died.” The Maple Ridge woman has made contact with many people who have Hep C, through a support page on social media. They wait to get treatment, she explained, because the side effects, for some people, are comparable to chemotherapy. Fatigue, flu-like symptoms, nausea, diarrhea, rash, anxiety and depression can all manifest, and the treatment goes on for a year. The cure rate has been a farfrom-perfect 60-70 per cent. “The side effects are so rough

that some people don’t even finish the treatment,” she said. “Some have said they have never been the same.” Baker’s blood tests have been good, but a recent biopsy showed that the disease is doing damage. Fortunately for her, there is a new Hepatitis C treatment that has people like Baker believing they can finally be cured. “I’m very excited about it.” In late December, Health Canada approved the new drug Sovaldi (Sofosbuvir) It is touted as having a 90 per cent cure rate, the shortest treatment at 12 weeks, shows minimal side effects, and is taken in a oncedaily tablet. “The implications of that are fantastic,” said Dr. Alnoor Ramji, a gastroenterologist in Vancouver. “It [Sovaldi] is going to change the face of Hepatitis C treatment again.” He said “again” because a breakthrough in treatment two years ago doubled the cure rate from 35 per cent to almost 70 per cent. Those who tried earlier treatments that were not successful will get a second chance at a cure with Sovaldi. Baker said she doesn’t know how she contracted the disease, but notes “I have tattoos.” “It doesn’t really matter how I got it – you can drive yourself crazy ... ” Her experience is typical of many of Dr. Ramji’s patients, and

he says 35-40 per cent of them don’t know how they would have contracted the disease. Medical procedures or cuts from glass or metal with infected blood are possible sources. Ramji said the biggest barrier to eliminating the disease will be in testing. In many people, there are no serious health effects until Hep C makes them sick from liver disease. The Canadian Liver Foundation suggests that Baby Boomers, Canadians born between 1946 and 1965, be tested for Hep C, because it is most common in that demographic.

“You don’t have to be an an active drug user to contract Hep C.” Dr. Alnoor Ramji

“You don’t have to be an an active drug user to contract Hep C,” notes Ramji. Seeing such advances also offers hope for even better treatments in the future, as medical researchers better understand the virus, and Ramji believes more breakthroughs are close. “You’re talking about eradicating Hep C.”

Crown: videos are evidence of accused ‘broader sexual deviance’ by Monisha M ar t ins staff reporter

Crown will not be allowed to enter more videos as evidence during a sentencing hearing for a man convicted of sexual assault and voyeurism. Madame Justice Heather Holmes dismissed an application Friday to tender the additional recordings made by Glen Allen Berry, saying they were not relevant at this stage of the court proceedings. “There is no basis on which to conclude that … the proposed evidence will assist the determination of Mr. Berry’s sentence,” said Holmes. Berry was convicted last October of one count of common assault, two counts of sexual assault and three counts of secretly observing and recording nudity in a private place. During a sentencing hearing in October, Crown prosecutor Janet Dickie moved to enter more videos made by Berry into evidence. They included footage of his common law partner showering; video that contained photographs of a 14-year-old girl and a woman performing a

6

sexual act; video of a six-yearold girl he filmed while showing her pornography; and video footage of children playing in which Berry focused on their buttocks. Berry, 49, was arrested in September 2010 after his ex-girlfriend reported the common assault to police. While investigating the assault, RCMP discovered several video recordings on Berry’s JVC camcorder and his Acer computer. The camcorder and computer contained four videos that showed Berry sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend while she slept. The evidence that lead to the second voyeurism charge included footage of another young woman secretly filmed with a camera placed in the bathroom of his sister’s home during a family birthday party. Berry has since moved from Maple Ridge and now resides in Abbotsford. Dickie told the court that Berry’s recent convictions are just a few examples of his “broader sexual deviance” and a dangerous pattern of conduct. Crown believed the additional video would allow the court to craft an appropriate sentence, one that would rehabilitate Berry and protects the public at the same time. Dickie noted that Berry has stated an intention (to the

Crown, not the court) to seek a conditional sentence to serve in the community, “where risks to the public are of direct relevance and concern.” In denying Crown’s application, Justice Holmes wrote the footage in the video evidence relates to conduct that is not criminal. “They seem to show a fascination for close-up views of male and female genitalia, and arguably a sexualized interest in J.T., who was 14 years of age at the time,” she noted.

“Mr. Berry is not to be sentenced for proclivities or even deviant interests.” Madame Justice Heather Holmes “Mr. Berry is not to be sentenced for proclivities or even deviant interests. There is no evidence from which to conclude that the additional video recordings will help the court better understand the gravity of the offences to be sentenced, or to more accurately craft Mr. Berry’s sentence.” Berry’s sentencing resumes in New Westminster Supreme Court next week. • Read full ruling @ mapleridgenews.com.

Two years for pharmacy robbery spree Text messages key to nabbing thieves by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter

A pair of men from Maple Ridge received two-year sentences for a three-month-long crime spree in 2012 that targeted pharmacies across the Metro Vancouver. Ryan Allan Olson and Luke Stuart Thom Ash pleaded guilty to several counts of robbery and one count each of theft last August, but were sentenced Jan. 2 to a provincial prison term of two years less a day. Olson, 28, confessed to robbing five pharmacies in Maple Ridge, Port Moody, Langley, Surrey and Abbotsford between Aug. 21 and Oct. 12, 2012 to steal narcotics such as oxycodone, Tylenol 3s and

morphine. He hit The Chemist drug store in Maple Ridge twice. Ash, meanwhile, admitted to three robberies. According to a search warrant application, the men used fake guns to hold up the pharmacies and sometimes disguised their faces with surgical masks. Ridge Meadows RCMP nabbed the pair after an extensive, crossjurisdictional investigation that included surveillance. Police also got a warrant for their cell phone records and found several incriminating text messages, boasting about the robberies. After the robberies, Olson would also text out a list of drugs he had stolen to potential customers. “Need to make rent next month,” said one text. “Let’s drive out to Richmond, Vancouver, North Van … whatever.” In a second text, Ash tells Olson they are a “killer team.”

“The funny thing is it doesn’t even phase me doing that … it’s almost fun,” Ash typed in another. Olson, a drug addict, joked in another text: “I’m trying to make my life better that’s why I’m hitting pharmacies.” Ridge Meadows RCMP required the help of Surrey RCMP’s robbery unit, Langley RCMP’s General Investigation Section, as well as both Abbotsford and Port Moody police to build a case against Ash and Olson. Olson will be going to prison while Ash is being allowed to serve his sentence in the community. Both men also received 18 months probation. Ash was a realtor in Maple Ridge for Royal LePage Brookside, but the Real Estate Council of British Columbia confirmed his license was suspended after he was charged.

Medical marijuana home grows set to expire Some B.C. cities are vowing to do what they can to uproot licensed medical marijuana grow operations in homes that will become illegal this spring as federally approved large-scale commercial growers take over. As of April 1, an estimated 11,500 B.C. medical marijuana grow oper-

ations that have been run by or on behalf of federally licensed users are supposed to shut down voluntarily but civic leaders say Health Canada is doing almost nothing to force them to comply. “It’s an absolute gong show,” Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman said. “They’re keeping cities completely in the dark as

to what they plan to do to fix this mess.” Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said his staff will soon pull together an action plan to respond to the estimated 600 to 700 medical pot grows in his city. “I don’t know how realistic it is to expect those people to voluntarily shut down and start ordering

it legally from Pete’s Pothouse,” Daykin said. Medical marijuana users hope a constitutional challenge launched by Abbotsford lawyer John Conroy will strike down part of the new federal regulations on medical marijuana or at least force an extension of the April 1 deadline while the case is before the courts.

the room. A number of the residents need help with walkers and wheelchairs, so the staff help get everyone to the dining room, help serve their meals, then get them all back. It’s about a two-hour process, round-trip. I’d venture to say that while not everyone

Life in care home is all about routine

bathing for those who need it. Some have individual rooms and some are paired in rooms. The days tend to revolve around meals, both for the staff and residents. Getting down to the dining hall is the first activity of the day, followed by breakfast, then getting back to

naps after breakfast, the majority do. There is a quiet time of a couple of hours when the staff do some house-cleaning or medication disbursement, then the cycle begins again for the lunch meal, two hours of transport, eating and return transport. Once again, with lunch eaten, many residents return to their rooms for reading and napping and the staff return to housekeeping duties. Three hours later it’s time for the dinner cycle to begin. A few residents might gather in the common room at various times during the day, but it’s a small proportion of the full population. The television is occasionally on, although there’s little agreement about what to watch, so it’s generally more background noise than anything else. A recreational director, whose job responsibilities extend beyond simply planning activities, sets up the occasional exercise class, or game activity that might last 30 minutes or so during one of the betweenmeal periods. Usually, during holiday breaks, she is on holidays herself so there’s not much happening when she’s gone. Once dinner is over, most residents will retire to their rooms to watch the news and a few other television programs and it gets pretty quiet, pretty early as bedtime routines set in. If I had to summarize the atmosphere in a couple of words, I would pick “quiet” and “sedentary.” Meals are excellent, mostly homestyle cooking; staff is very friendly and accommodating; residents are looked after and checked up on numerous times a day – it’s a safe and secure setting to be sure. My mother seems content, rarely naps, reads a lot, works on word puzzles, and walks about. Although she is 89 years old, she’s in better shape, physically and mentally, than 95 per cent of the resident population. I couldn’t imagine myself being in a home with that much time on my hands, not at this point in my life. But the time may come when I will need both the quiet and the simple routines that such a lifestyle offers. I would consider myself lucky to be in a home such as my mom is in, although I hope it will be more than a few years from now. Graham Hookey writes about education, parenting and eldercare.

Looks Toyota has always been a logical purchase, based on reliability and durability but now its designs too are capturing buyers with a visual, desirable esthetic. The 2014 edition is 7.5cm longer (mostly in the rear seat and cargo area), 1.5cm wider and 3cm lower. The stance is wide and lower, making more of a visual impact. Combine this with a large grille borrowed from the Tundra pickup truck and the Highlander has a very rugged, yet polished, look that

The cup holder is large and the centre armrest has a massive storage area inside; this is thanks to the removal of the stowaway seat that used to hide under the centre armrest. Now in the second row of seats there are three permanent seats or two captain’s chairs in the top Limited model. The previous hideaway idea was simple but not so comfortable. The biggest change takes place in the third row of seats, where three people can sit rather than just two. In addition,

there is 100L of cargo space behind the third row of seats offering much better functionality. It has all the interior amenities that one expects in a modern three-row crossover, even a system that allows the driver’s voice to be amplified through the stereo for easier conversations with passengers in the very back, but there seems to be a lack of sophistication compared to its competition. Drive The previous Highlander was available with a 4-cylinder engine and front wheel drive (FWD). It’s with a standard 3.5L V6 with 270hp, matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission, also with FWD. The starting price stays at $31,680; factoring in the backup camera there is good value here. When it arrives later this month, the base LE with all wheel drive (AWD) starts at $34,180. I think most people will opt for the LE with convenience package that includes 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, three-zone climate control, satellite radio and leather steering wheel to name a few. This brings the price up to $34,480 for the FWD and $36,980 for the AWD. On the road, the AWD system sends power to just the front wheels as often as possible with only 10 per cent of the torque shifting when cornering. The system has the ability to shift or lock up to 50 per cent of the power for better traction but limiting it to times

Question

when it is truly needed helps improve fuel economy. The other part of the fuel economy story is the all-new 6-speed automatic. The official fuel rating for the most popular AWD model is 11.5L/100km in the city and 8.2L on the highway, which is almost a full litre improvement in combined highway/city economy over the 2013 model. The rear suspension has been modified for a slightly more dynamic drive and improved ride. The steering is rather light and vague but the buyers of this type of product will appreciate the ease of use.

OF THE WEEK:

Verdict The Highlander is a functional vehicle for young buyers with kids and friends that need to get to practice and carry all the sports equipment that goes with it. Overall, a very good family crossover that will get the job done every day.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK!

Go to drivewayBC.ca to submit your answer.

With challenging road conditions across the province, January is always one of the highest months for crashes in B.C. Take some small steps to prepare your vehicle for the conditions, such as checking your tire pressure – tires deflate more quickly in cold weather – and top up your vehicle’s anti-freeze, windshield washer fluid, and gas.

Cars looming large in rearview By Alexandra Straub

B

efore looking ahead with hope for a promising new year, indulge me while I check my rearview mirror. My review of 2013 might offer you some thoughts

to ponder for your 2014. I tried to count how many cars I tested last year. I could only come up with an approximate figure – around 102. That doesn’t include motorcycles, ATVs, ROVs and anything else that you could consider some sort or transportation or recreational vehicle. So, within that lot, you have to either be pretty good or pretty bad to stand out. Here are the cars that

stuck with me and still leave me wanting more (or less.) Making the top of my list as the most memorable car that I drove is not what you’d expect. • I fell in love with the 2013 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van – its utility, its practicality and its ability to be a workhorse, even though it only has 131 horsepower. In the city, it fit in underground parking lots and surprisingly had pep.

Visibility is non-existent out the rear and there was no vanity mirror, but it was just an admirable vehicle to drive. And it even fits a motorcycle inside. I’m not a small business owner who could fully make use of its adaptability, but I made Costco runs, helped a friend move and transported audio equipment for a band with which I occasionally sing. I just love it. • The 2014 Ford Fiesta ST makes the list because,

in all the years that I’ve been testing vehicles, I have never been as tempted to impulse buy a car. For under $25K you get a firecracker of a car, a manual transmission, 197 horsepower and an amazing chassis setup. For an everyday driver and a car you could put on the track, it’s just stellar. The smile on your face when driving is included in the price tag. • The least bang for your buck, that I tested, comes

The 2014 Ford Fiesta FC has 197 horsepower for under $25,000. with the 2013 BMW 320i xDrive. At $46,500, that’s pretty steep for a car that doesn’t even have a backup camera or streaming Bluetooth audio. Not to mention, it comes with a humble 181 horsepower engine. That said, it’s a BMW, therefore has some nice touches. Put it in Sport mode, tinker with the throttle and you’ll instantly become a happier person. And for everyday driving, I really had no complaints. • My favourite convertible of the year goes to the Bentley Continental GT Speed drop top. It’s not hard to see why. Yes, I could have opted for the Porsche Boxster S (it came so close and is hundreds of thousands of dollars cheaper,) but I hand the title to the Brits because I love the craftsmanship. After all, that’s what luxury is all about. Getting inside and feeling like you’re in your living room, albeit a posh and exquisitely detailed living room. And one that has 616 horsepower and all-wheel drive. Sign me up. • It’s always a fabulous time when I can be behind

the wheel of a race car. I had two opportunities. The first came when I participated in the Bridgestone Racing Academy at the Driver Development Track at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Two days behind the wheel of a Van Diemen Formula car was heaven. And I learned a thing or two about car control (www.race2000. com). Then, I drove a track-ready vehicle that was super fast and zero emissions. Nissan’s world renowned LEAF was available for laps at the manufacturer’s international event called Nissan 360. But this one was a little more special. It was the LEAF NISMO RC (RC stands for race car) and had been on tracks around the world. It was lightening fast and of course, a very memorable experience. And while I loved most of all the cars I drove in 2013, adding the 2014 VW Touareg TDI to the family was certainly a highlight of my year. alexandra.straub@ drivewaybc.ca

GVHBA ready for exciting, busy year ahead By Kerry Vital

As 2014 begins, the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association is looking forward to some exciting events. On Feb. 5, the GVHBA will hold its Legends of Housing event in Burnaby, featuring Morningstar Homes Partner Dale Barron, Bosa Development Vice-President of Development Eric Martin and former President and Director of British Pacific Properties Ltd. Jim McLean. It will be moderated by

Ledingham McAllister President Ward McAllister. The BC Home + Garden Show will take place Feb. 19 to 23, and will feature the GVHBA Renovation Gallery, a 1,000-square-foot space featuring before-and-after photos of professionally renovated projects as well as free consultations with RenoMark renovators, designers, subtrades and suppliers. You’ll also find the HGTV Main Stage, with appearances from experts such as Bryan Baeumler, Mike Holmes Jr. and Sherry Holmes and Janette Ewen.

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

March will bring the 20th annual First-Time Home Buyers Seminar, taking place at the Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey. “Our experts will help first-time buyers consider all available options and important issues before they take that critical first step onto the property ladder,” says GVHBA CEO Bob de Wit. “Real estate continues to be a hot topic in this region, so seminar attendance is expected to be as many or greater than the 750 young people who attended last year’s event.” A panel of experts will discuss a variety of topics, including the best location, what home type is best matched to wants, needs and financial resources, and legal considerations. Exhibitors will also be available beforehand to answer any questions and provide information to attendees. Pre-registration is required; you can register online or call 778-565-4288 Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a food item for the Surrey Food Bank. For more information and for a full calendar of events, visit www.gvhba.org.

The views from Coquitlam’s Burke Mountain are truly spectacular, below, and Morningstar Homes is taking advantage of this with their view homes at Partington. With all the gorgeous features of Partington plus the amazing scenery, the homes are second-to-none.

Taking in the view on Burke Mountain By Kerry Vital

Morningstar Homes continues to impress with their latest release of amazing View Homes, an extension of Partington on Burke Mountain that combine beautiful homes and a view that’s second-to-none. “This is a really special offering,” says Deborah Calahan, vice-president of sales and marketing for Morningstar. “There is a limited quantity of view homes available on Burke Mountain and they are in high demand.” The spectacular homes include all of the

gorgeous features of Partington, while also including some of the most beautiful views in the Lower Mainland. “It’s like being on top of the world,” says Calahan. “Our Partington homes were designed with incredible views in mind by making the windows the focal point of each home. We could not pass up the opportunity to show them off.” The four-bedroom homes at Partington are available in three different open-plan floorplans, ranging from 3,700 to 3,900 square feet. All of them include an unfinished basement and a large private yard with patio or deck. The kitchens are truly huge, with granite islands, stainless-steel appliances and tons of counter space. Hardwood flooring throughout the main living areas complements the 19-foot vaulted ceiling and floor-to-ceiling linear fireplace. “These homes are very well laid-out” Calahan says. “There’s a sense of grandeur here. People are noting the ‘wow’ of the house; it takes your breath away.”

Partington is perfectly located for homeowners to live the Burke Mountain lifestyle. The neighbourhood has been growing over the years and now includes schools, parks and trails. It is also just a short drive to Coquitlam Town Centre for shopping, dining and transit. You can also find leisure and recreation activities nearby. Partington joins Morningstar’s seven previous projects on Burke Mountain, including Belmont, Avondale and Kingston. “We always strive to be innovative and offer our purchasers the best,” says Calahan. “We never tire of trying to better our designs, with each new project being given its own consideration.” Morningstar was the first developer on Burke Mountain, and Calahan says that they’ve been welcomed with every project they build. She has increasingly seen friends and family members of other Morningstar buyers looking to purchase their own home. Every home at Partington has been selling well, with Calahan noting she is releasing

more lots for sale this weekend. “Demand is high for a quality product by a trustworthy builder with an outstanding view. We’re selling them faster than I can release them!” she adds with pride “The Morningstar brand is becoming a household word on Burke.” View Homes at Partington start at $1.2 million. For more information, check out www.mstarhomes.com, call 604-942-6370 or visit the sales office at 1508 Dayton Street, Coquitlam, open daily (except Friday) between noon and 6 p.m.

Some winter tips for being fire aware By Robert Prince

So that beautiful cut Christmas tree you so lovingly decorated has served its purpose as a source of delight for your family, and as a topper for all those presents. Now, though, we’re past the holidays, and that significant fire hazard should have already been run through a chipper. That’s the word from Mark Smitton, assistant fire chief – fire prevention and communications for the Maple Ridge Fire Department. He says the cause of fire prevention is best served when homeowners dispose of their cut trees as soon as possible after Christmas. Simply dumping it outside the back door for later disposal because it’s convenient is not only an eyesore, but also a potential fuel source for fire. Speaking of fire, candles are a major contributor to residential fires at this time of the year and through the winter because people tend to use them more often than at other times of the year to create ambiance, or as a source of light during blackouts. “Never leave candles unattended, whether they’re for decoration or light,” says Smitton. “And never put them near anything flammable, especially easily combustible materials like curtains.”

“Never leave candles unattended, whether they’re for decoration or light. And never put them near anything flammable, especially easily combustible materials like curtains.” – Mark Smitton The same goes for space heaters, he adds, which are another serious fire hazard if used improperly. Make sure you plug them directly into a wall outlet and not into extension cords or

Assistant fire chief Mark Smitton recommends keeping a fire extinguisher on each floor of your home.

power bars. They draw way too much current, and might cause the cords or bars to overheat and create a fire. Fireplaces aren’t the same hazard they once were, primarily because many now use natural gas, but chimney fires do still occur. In fact, says Smitton, the fire department was recently called out to a residential chimney fire. If you’re using your wood-burning fireplace regularly, get it inspected and cleaned. Ditto for your furnace and any other gas appliances you might have in your home. They should all be serviced and cleaned annually to provide efficient, safe operation.

“These types of calls [chimney, candle, space heater fires] definitely go up this time of year,” the assistant fire chief confirms. “It’s colder and stormier outside, so people use whatever they have for heat and light. We just ask that they do it safely.” Two pieces of safety equipment that will help are a fire extinguisher and a carbon monoxide detector. If your home has neither, you’re flirting with disaster. Carbon monoxide detectors are part of the building code today, and with so many gas appliances in use, they’re really a good idea,

says Smitton. As far as the fire extinguishers go, having one on each floor of your home is a recommended precaution. Once you have them, however, you need to keep them charged and in good working order, so if you haven’t looked at them for a while, now’s a good time to do so. Smitton cautions that fire prevention is all about cutting down on potential hazards, and being smart when it comes to safety. On behalf of the Maple Ridge Fire Department, he wants to wish everyone a safe and happy winter.

Local girls picked for B.C. Games

Oldtimers soccer Martin McGill (left) of the West Coast Auto Witch of Endor Football Club during a game against South Hill out of Vancouver during a men’s over-55 North Division game on Sunday at the Samuel Robertson Technical secondary. The game ended 1-1. There are 28 teams in the over-55 division and the league is always looking for more players. Anyone interested can go to www. bcots.org.

by Nei l Corbe tt Black Press

Two local female hockey players have been named to the Fraser Valley team for the B.C. Winter Games, which are coming up Feb. 20-23 in Mission. Forward and Alexis Kahlert and defenceman Emily Duchak will will both be on the squad, which is a rep team for under-16 girls. There are 20 players per zone, and eight provincial zones in the competition. Zone 3 is the Fraser Valley – a hotbed of women’s hockey in B.C. It takes in all of the Valley’s major centers, including Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Langley, Surrey, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Zone 3 coach Al Wozney said that his Fraser Valley team will be favoured to win the tournament. “On paper, we’re probably the top team. We have a lot of depth.” Competition rules state that the team can’t practice more than once before the Games begin. With just one Feb. 17 ice time to get ready, the challenge will be for the team to find some chemistry quickly. The team was picked from 50 girls in the region who tried out. Wozney said Duchak is part of a talented Surrey Falcons bantam team, and he mined them for six defenders, and 10 players in total. “She’s got great skills, she’s a good skater, she sees the ice well, and she worked really hard in the tryouts.” He expects Kahlert to get in on the forecheck, and win some loose pucks. She plays with the Ridge Meadows bantam A2 boys’ team, and is an assistant captain. “She’s got good energy. She plays hard, and plays strong in the corners.” The coach noted that selectors for both Team B.C. and the national under-18 team will be in attendance at the Games, and so will college scouts. “You get a lot of scouts there. This is an important step for these girls.”

Barracudas offer free hockey sessions by Ne il Corbet t Black Press

The Meadow Ridge Barracudas are trying to bring more girls into hockey. Right now the organization is a healthy size, with eight teams playing at seven levels, from the five-year-old Tykes to a combination Midget/Juvenile team that will take players as old as 21. “We’re in build mode,” said president Terry Passley This Saturday at 7:45 p.m. at the Pitt Meadows Fiat rink the Barracudas will host a Try Hockey for Free session. The goal is to let girls get out on the ice with a stick and puck, and to introduce them to the coaches and some of the senior players on the Barracudas. “There’s a lot of young ladies who are

nervous about trying hockey for the first time, and this would give them a chance to get out on the ice.” Although players can start hockey at the Tyke level, at five or six years of age, he said children aged eight, nine and 10 are still at a good age to start hockey. “They transition very well.” There will three Try Hockey sessions, with two more to follow on Feb. 8 at 7:45 p.m.and another on March 8 at 7 p.m. “They can go to one, or attend all three. Come on out and meet the coaches.” To cut parents a break, the association is offering an introductory rate for new players at the tyke level. Next September, the tykes will pay less than $200. In the past, the cost was $350 for Tyke, ranging up to $725 for the Midget level. Passley said the executive is just acknowledging that starting a child in hock-

ey is cost prohibitive for some parents. “It can be expensive to buy all the gear, and then get going.” The association is also putting a renewed emphasis on skill development. This year, they have one ice slot every Saturday to focus on power skating, stick handling, shooting and other hockey skills. They bring in specialized coaches to offer the more specialized instruction. “Development ice was something we really needed,” said Passley. “It definitely is making a difference.” Passley has already brought two sons, now 23 and 25, through minor hockey. Now with a 12-year-old daughter he is enjoying seeing how girls hockey operates. “With girls it’s a lot of social aspect and socials skills, and it’s about meeting their friends and hanging out with their friends.”

s we gear up for the 2014 spring 10K, fun run and marathon season, there is a common running injury that should be discussed. Shin splints is a wellknown, catch-all term used to describe pain at the front or lower inside edge of the tibia (shin bone). The term doesn’t discriminate the different possible tissue problems occurring. More properly known as medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), this condition occurs during physical activity and results from too much force being placed on your tibia and connective tissues that attach your muscles to the bone. MTSS is common in runners and in those who participate in activities with sudden stops and starts or jumps, such

as basketball and soccer. The overloading is usually a result of improper form when exercising, wearing worn out or improper athletic shoes or more frequently, ‘too much training, too soon’. Sometimes a contributing factor can be the surface of the ground. The slant of the road (called ‘camber’), hillwork or changing the type of surface (going from hard asphalt to soft grass/sand, or vice versa) can also generate extra loading on these tissues. The pain may be caused by an irritation of the periosteum (the sheath covering) of the tibia, inflammation of the tendinous connection from the muscle to the bone, the muscle itself, but this injury may overlap with other conditions that include increased pressure inside the compartment sheath surrounding the muscle,

Every flooring installation regardless of surface type will require more material than the exact surface measurement of the installation area. This is a result of numerous factors: carpet roll width, pattern matching, material units in hard surface packaging and more. When you purchase flooring from Carpet One that we have measured for your installation, we guarantee that the amount of flooring you buy will be only the minimum necessary required for a professional installation by the highest industry standards. We’re experts and that’s what we do. You pay only for what you need.
