Richmond Steveston MLA John Yap recently released his final report on the Liquor Policy Review and he endorsed liquor sales in grocery stores throughout the province. Yap said this recommendation was consistent with support voiced by three-quarters of respondents during the review. He recommended the B.C. Liberal government move “forward on developing and implementing a retail model that

meets consumer demands for greater accessibility, “while maintaining British Columbia’s high standards for protecting health and public safety.” While Yap’s report had more than 70 recommendations, one of the key items suggested B.C. should maintain the current cap on the total number of retail outlets (731) in the province. The parliamentary secretary for Liquor Policy Reform also recommended the liquor be separate from grocery products. It must be a store-within-a-store model, which would be staffed separately

from the grocery retail service, and it would ensure continued restricted access to alcohol for minors. This model is already being used in other provinces. Noting she is not opposed to liquor being available in grocery stores, Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett said she is taking a wait-and-see attitude until she sees the remainder of the recommendations, which are expected to be released later this year. Pointing to the recommendation of maintaining the current number of liquor outlets in B.C.,

Barnett added she is worried about what might happen with the small businesses that are already established. “They have provided goodpaying jobs for people in their communities and provided a lot of capital investment, and I want to make sure that isn’t being lost.” Meanwhile, the NDP claimed it was a smoke-and-mirrors announcement to appease the populist ideal of making it convenient to pick up a case of beer or a bottle of wine at the same time they’re picking up groceries. William Sellars may as well have been a brick wall when the Lac la Hache Tomahawks (3-13) faced off against the heavily favoured Quesnel Kangaroos (115) on Dec. 28. The Tomahawks goaltender made 60 saves on 62 shots and the local Central Interior Hockey League team came away with a 6-2 win. A Dec. 30 article in the Quesnel Cariboo Observer mentioned David and Goliath â&#x20AC;&#x201C;

the matchup seemed that uneven and the end that astonishing. It was Quesnelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first loss at home this season and first in seven games. It was Lac la Hacheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third win of the season. It was an upset to say the least. Unfortunately, the heroics didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t carry over into 2014. The Tomahawks were in Smithers to face the Steelheads (8-3-5) on Jan. 4. Smithers scored four before Kyle Crump could get Lac la Hache on the score board and the Steelheads came away on top at 6-1. Matt Brenner was in net for the

Tomahawks and he made 51 saves on 57 shots. Jan. 5 saw Lac la Hache in Houston to face the Luckies (6-5-3). Houston scored five before Wilfred Robbins could answer for Lac la Hache. Crump added one in the second and Walter Schmidt added one in the third. But the Luckies scored five more on their way to a 10-3 win. Next up for Lac la Hache is a home game at Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena on Jan. 11. They host the Luckies on Jan. 18, which is Lac la Hacheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last game of the season.

A number of new attractions are lined up for the 2014 Cariboo Challenge, as organizers make final preparations for the three-day event – Jan. 10-12 – at the 108 Mile Heritage Site. Organizer Ulli Vogler says the 21st anniversary event aims to bring the community together and raises awareness about the pleasures of sled dog racing. “We are so looking forward to meeting the community out there and we’re looking forward to a good race.” A variety of activities are scheduled throughout the weekend. There’s a Musher’s Dinner and Auction on Saturday night at The Hills Health Ranch, as well as face painting throughout the weekend and an art contest on Jan. 11. The theme of the art contest is “sled dogs and winter in the Cariboo.” For submission, children and youth can bring art work – such as paintings, carvings and sculptures – with their names and addresses on it to the 108 Mile Heritage Site, no later than 2 p.m. on Jan. 11. “The kids can be really creative. Whatever they like to do. “They can carve

something, do something out of soapstone, build something or

they can paint. Whatever comes to mind – it’s their artwork.” The awards ceremony for artists will be held at around 2:30 p.m. Judging is based on three different age groups – three to six, seven to 12 and 12 to 18. Dozens of items have been donated for a silent auction that will close at 2 p.m. on Jan. 12. “At this point, I am really happy. We have 72 items and there are more to come.” Auction items include an

accommodation package for two nights in a chalet at a ski resort in Fernie, a number of large gift baskets, sled dog tours and more. A new addition to the race this year are merchant tables for items from local vendors. (Interested parties can contact Vogler at 250-396-4404 or 250398-0841 to sign up.) The 59 Mile Business Centre is running a concession, and there will be a marshmallow roast. There’s a weight-pull competition on Jan. 11. It’s open to anyone and it’s free to enter. Different classes of dogs – small, medium and large – will wear a harness and pull a sled. Whichever dog can pull the most in their weight class wins. The new mascot, named Malamutt, is also

The Love 100 Mile House project is off to a great start, as its website at love100milehouse. com has had great participation from local businesses. The website is a great site for showcasing these businesses, as well as promoting the community and encouraging investment. The Small Town Love program is funded by the Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT), and was founded and headed up by Amy Quarry of Quesnel. Almost four dozen businesses signed up for the new, professional looking website. The project has been deemed a great success. It surpassed NDIT’s initial budget of 25, and ended up with 45 businesses participating. It officially kicked off on Nov. 1, but organizers and project participants celebrated with an open house at the 100 Mile Curling Club on Nov. 27. Quarry says the open house was very successful with a lot of business owners present and people dropping by to find out what it was all about. “[District of 100 Mile House planner] Joanne Doddridge did a great job of planning the event, and it was really nice to see people being enthusiastic about the project.” Quarry adds local business owners have been getting good responses from the website. “The mayor [Mitch Campsall] says he had people coming into his store saying they didn’t know about all of the services he provides until they had seen the website – even though they have known about his store for a long time. “They hadn’t realized the full scope of what the store offered. It’s one of the things we feel is good value from the site – reminding people

Meyer dropped coupons off with Lisa De Paoli, Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre (CFEC) executive director, on Dec. 19. The CFEC distributed the meal coupons to clients.

At 72.6, B.C.’s Business Barometer index is the highest in the country. We are also finding pretty positive hiring plans for this time of year, with 21 per

cent of owners planning to add staff, while only six per cent are expecting to shed staff in the next few months. “B.C. began the year at the back of the pack, in sixth place overall,” says CFIB B.C. director of provincial affairs Mike Klassen. “After steadily climbing back all year, B.C. has the highest small

The B.C. Liberal government is accepting public comments until Jan. 15 on a proposed bill to restrict the number of MLAs to the current level of 85, and to maintain the current rural and northern seats regardless of population. Current law requires an independent Electoral Boundaries Commission to be appointed in May 2014 to consider changes. The government discussion paper is posted online at http://www.ag.gov.bc.ca/legislation/ ebca/index.htm. The last review in 2008 recommended that an urban population shift should result in a reduction of one seat in the CaribooThompson region and one in northern B.C. The government intervened to keep those seats and increase the total constituencies from 83 to 85. The B.C. Liberals and BC NDP agreed that northern constituencies could not get any larger and still be represented by a single MLA. The 2008 review, chaired by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Bruce Cohen, added seats in the Okanagan, Fraser Valley, Surrey, Burnaby-TriCities and downtown Vancouver. It concluded that keeping all the rural seats was not consistent with the principle of representation by population.

A new year, a safer you

Resolve to make safety a priority in 2014. Here are some practical resolutions to get you started: • I will drive sober; I will drive alert. Impairment has many faces – alcohol, drugs and fatigue are just a few examples. Learn how to recognize the signs of impairment and be willing to seek help when needed. There is no excuse for impaired driving. • I will focus on the driving task at hand – and that’s it. Distractions take your attention off the road and that can have dangerous and deadly consequences. Put your Smartphone out of reach. Avoid fumbling with the radio while driving. Pull over to a safe spot if you need to devote your attention to something other than driving. • I will wear my seatbelt. It is estimated that seat belts in passenger vehicles save 1,000 lives every year in Canada, so buckle up. • I will use my head and wear a helmet. Wear a helmet when enjoying activities, such as hockey, skating, cycling, skiing, snowboarding or skateboarding. Pair each activity with the right helmet. • I will routinely check my home for safety hazards. Then, I will address them. Prevention is the key to harm reduction. Clutter on the stairs? Clear it. Have a long, dangling window blind cord? Cut it and put the remnant out of reach of children. Identify risks before injuries occur. • I will take steps to stop fires before they start at home. Fires claim eight lives each week in Canada. Take precautions to protect your home and the people and pets in it. Check that your smoke detectors are in good working order; change the batteries twice a year. Have a working fire extinguisher within reach of the kitchen and fireplaces. Never leave candles unattended. • I will recognize that firearms safety is my responsibility.

Community safety is your responsibility. Get firearms safety training. Lock and unload firearms, and store ammunition separately. Know your options if you inherit a firearm, or have a firearm you no long want. • I will be a courteous, informed and responsible cyber-citizen. Social media and online safety includes guarding your personal information and being thoughtful about the words and images your post online. Think before you comment. • I will speak with my doctor and pharmacist about my medications. Medications can interact with each other to produce unwanted and impairing side-effects. These may affect your driving abilities. • I will develop healthy relationships. I will not be a bully. Bullying happens at home, in the school yard, at work and online. It hurts, and it needs to stop. Find ways to relax, take time to think before responding and find constructive, creative outlets for frustration. Stand up for others who are being bullied.

• I will lead by example. Consistently make safety a priority and become a role model for your children, friends and people in your community. Safety information, activities
