Directors discuss daylight time issue

Much of the Jan. 7 Creston Valley services committee meeting was spent discussing whether voters should have a say about daylight time. Creston Mayor Ron Toyota introduced a motion to put the issue on a ballot in the Nov. 15 local government elections. Toyota did not speak for or against adopting mountain daylight time (MDT), arguing instead that voters should have the right to make their choice. “This is about getting this issue off the table, and then we’re done,” he said. In the two previous municipal elections, Creston Coun. Judy Gadicke campaigned in favour of MDT. (The Creston Valley and East Shore are currently on mountain standard time year-round.) In both elections, she received more votes than any other candidate for town council. Regional District of Central Kootenay Area A director Garry Jackman, an opponent of daylight time, said there is no economic benefit to changing time to make daylight extend longer into the evening, and that the Town of Creston hasn’t demonstrated why there should be a vote. Arguing that the town “hasn’t done its homework,” Jackman said that there is no evidence that Creston residents want MDT, while a poll of Area B voters showed a 77 per cent opposition to the scheme among the 400 residents who responded. detailed pictures of wildlife after starting out drawing pets. “Anything with fur or feathers,” he laughed. From his original focus on charcoal pencil drawings, Hobbs’ work has evolved into a complex technique that combines the use of coloured pencils, brushes and paints, and an airbrush.
Surprisingly, Hobbs has only been creating wildlife art for three years. Born and raised in England, he and his wife, Kerry, emigrated several years ago, making Castlegar their first Canadian home. “It’s been a fascinating ride,” he admitted. “I’ve been running the design business, too, and that helps to keep things realistic.“ The self-taught artist has developed his own technique for creating finely
Creston Valley artist Guy Hobbs has been named the BC Wildlife Federation 2014 artist of the year for All He Surveys, his close-up depiction of a bald eagle. Hobbs’ work was selected by a jury from three finalists in a field narrowed down from more than 30 submissions by a vote of delegates to the BCWF annual general meeting and convention.

NCC adds land to help grizzly population BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Guy Hobbs was named the BC Wildlife Federation’s 2014 artist of the year for All He Surveys.
Guy Hobbs From page 1 “It’s been a really interesting learning process,” he said. “I was working exclusively in colouring pencil and I hit a road block. I’ve always said I’ve become a wildlife artist to cover up the fact that I’m a really mediocre wildlife photographer!“ He made a decision early on to only work from his own reference photos. “It’s just a personal preference and I think it keeps me honest. As an artist I get to improve on my mediocre photos.” One of the appeals of photography, Hobbs said, is that allows him to play with depth of field — “bringing some things to attention by throwing other things out of focus. That’s virtually impossible with pencil. Pencil can create really fine detail, but not the out-of-focus aspect of a photo.” His early work (which can be viewed at www.guyhobbs.com), demonstrates his deft ability with charcoal pencils. But his pictures took a giant leap forward when he began to experiment with another tool. “I saw people’s work with airbrush and I thought, ‘That looks like fun,’ ” he said. “So I got an airbrush just to deal with background. It achieved some other things I liked. Now, combining the pencils back with it there’s a lot more I can achieve. It really was one of those
light bulb moments. “It was a huge leap forward in what I was trying to achieve and what I was able to achieve.” Astonishingly, All He Surveys is the first complete piece he created with his newly developed technique. “That was a validation of what I was doing.” Raised in the southeast of England, Hobbs is the youngest — “by quite a long way” — of seven children in his family. He had traveled around the world before he met and married Kerry, who is now the manager of the Creston campus of College of the Rockies. “On our honeymoon we did a three-week trip around the U.S. We called it the Rock Tour because we looked at more rock formations than is probably good for a human being — the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, all those things,” Hobbs said. “On that trip it hit home that there was still country with wide open, unpopulated land. “I also noticed how much more polite to each other the Americans were than the Brits, and how much more aware of one another’s existence they seemed to be. “We were both in careers that were going very well but weren’t necessarily fulfilling. We were very much in the rat race so we weren’t spending very much quality time together.” Deciding that they could either continue to have more life adventures or keep doing what they were doing until they retired, they

applied for Canadian visas after making a three-week tour around B.C. Three years, and three more road trips, later they were on their way to a new life in Canada. “Coming to Canada was the best decision I have made — after getting married, that is,” Hobbs laughed. “Creston, funnily enough, had not featured very highly with us because it was more like England. We were looking for a change.” In Castlegar, Kerry got into the hospitality industry, managing hotels. Hobbs kept his design agency going by working online. The agency, which he continues to operate, works with everything from small business startups to international blue chip companies. A job opportunity brought the couple to Creston, and a suggestion by Kerry helped spur Hobbs into a new direction. “You love wildlife,” she said. “You are fascinated by wildlife — why don’t you draw it?” “It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “I count myself very, very lucky.” The BCWF Artist of the Year program was established in 1992 with the goal of selecting an artist whose work exhibits the beauty of B.C. fish, wildlife and habitats. The sale of limited edition art prints supports BCWF conservation projects throughout the province while also recognizing the talent of B.C. artists. This year’s artist of the year art cards and signed and numbered limited edition prints are now available for purchase on line at www.bcwf.bc.ca.
A corridor that will allow for the safer passage of grizzly bears through the Selkirk and Purcell mountains will be facilitated by a 150-hectare land purchase by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. According to an NCC press release, the corridor will help the threatened grizzly bear population in southeastern B.C. to find new mates among the larger grizzly population to the east. One of the two parcels purchased was a Wynndel Box and Lumber (WBL) property adjacent to the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. “We are a significant landowner in the valley but much of the land is not essential to our mill operations,” said WBL CEO Michael Combs. “We are committed to investing in the future of our mill so we are seeking to sell certain of our non-essential lands for that purpose. “We will not sell any lands necessary for our mill operations and we will sell our lands in an environmentally sensitive manner whenever reasonable. Much of our land is home or a corridor used by certain endangered species.” Frogs will also benefit from the land purchase. What is referred to as the Frog Bear Conservation Corridor will also benefit the northern leopard frog population in B.C.’s only known breeding location for the endangered amphibian. The second parcel in the purchase is an 85-hectare property on the Creston flats, which will

continue to be used for agriculture. The total cost for the two parcels is $1.4 million. Nancy Newhouse, speaking for the NCC, said researchers have mapped out the movements of the bears through the valley and know the corridor is vital for the prospects of the south Selkirk grizzly population. “The Creston Valley is an incredible hot spot for conservation,” she said. Experts say connecting the two populations of bears is considered critical for their long-term prospects, allowing the at-risk grizzlies to find new mates. The corridor is also expected to reduce human-bear conflict. “Providing for wildlife connectivity through human environments has become the issue of our times, here in southern B.C. and around the world,” said grizzly bear biologist Michael Proctor in a news release. “Enabling grizzly bears and other species to be inter-connected between mountain ranges and across regions might be the single best thing we can do to provide options for species, ecosystems and nature to adapt to climate change.” Several other rare species have also been documented in the Creston Valley, including the northern rubber boa snake, and birds like the great blue heron, American bittern and western screech owl. “The NCC supports agriculture and sustainable forestry practices,” Combs said. “Our partnership has worked very well for NCC and WBL and we intend to work together in the future.”

The arrest of a male suspected of being behind the rash of break-ins recently hasn’t completely ended the robberies, RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. Gollan reported that one more break-in has been reported since Briaden Rosch was arrested after police executed a search warrant at a residence on Jan. 7. Rosch, 27, faces six charges of breaking and entering and the investigation continues, with additional charges pending, Gollan said. Another break-in was reported after Rosch was placed in custody. Gollan said police have suspected all along that Rosch was working in concert with an accomplice, who could now be working on his own.

Little change seen in this year’s property assessments
BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Property owners in the Kootenays shouldn’t be expecting any major surprises when they open their assessment notices this month. “Assessments in the Kootenay Lake area have, for the most part, changed only marginally in value compared to last year’s assessment roll,” said Dennis Hickson, deputy assessor for BC Assessment said from his office in Nelson. “For example, a typical single family home in Creston that was valued at $267,000 for the 2013 assessment roll is valued at $272,000 for the 2014 assessment roll. In Kaslo, a single family home that was valued at $179,000 for the 2013 assessment roll is valued at $181,000 for 2014. “An exception to the general trend is the rural area of north Kootenay Lake, where assessments increased from five per cent to 10 per cent.” The relative stability of property values is largely a reflection of a flat real estate market. Sale prices in most areas haven’t changed significantly in the past year. It’s too early for property owners to know how their assessments will relate to their taxes. Local governments are just now working to determine their budgetary needs for the coming fiscal year. Overall, the Town of Creston’s assessment roll increased from $694 mil-
lion last year to $706 million this year. The Village of Kaslo’s assessment roll increased from $179 million last year to $182 million this year. The assessment roll for the rural area surrounding Creston and Kaslo, and including the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, stayed steady at $2.1 billion this year. Of the communities noted above, almost $32 million of the assessment change is attributable to subdivisions, rezoning and new construction. Hickson added that commercial and industrial properties in Creston and Kaslo will see changes of plus or minus five per cent. “Property owners who feel that their property assessment does not reflect market value as of July 1, 2013, or see incorrect information on their notice should contact BC Assessment as indicated on their notice as soon as possible in January,” said Hickson. “If a property owner is still concerned about their assessment after speaking to one of our staff, they may submit a notice of complaint (appeal) by Jan. 31, for an independent review by a property assessment review panel,” added Hickson. The property assessment review panels, independent of BC Assessment, are appointed annually by the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, and meet between Feb. 1 and March 15 to hear formal complaints.

Funds needed for Seventh-day Adventist Costa Rica mission BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor Members of the Creston Seventh-day Adventist Church will team up with church members from Cranbrook and Victoria for a 10-day mission trip, during which they will help a family with two physically disabled daughters. Both daughters are in wheelchairs, but their home is currently not wheelchair accessible, so the 29-member group, including 12 from Creston, will add a bedroom and ensuite bathroom for the girls. And if funds permit, they will also redo the sidewalk, roof and windows, and give the home a fresh coat of paint. The group decided in June to make the trip, which starts Jan. 31, and fundraising has been going on ever since, but turning the funds into U.S. dollars is challenging with the current exchange rate — about $2,000 more is needed to complete the entire project. “We’re really hoping to make really big impact and blessing for the family and the community, as well,” said Tammy Molina, whose husband, Josue, is the pastor of the Creston and Cranbrook churches. The mission will take place in Jaco, Costa Rica, a town of
about 4,500. The family had initially asked the town for funding to improve their home, but the money wasn’t available for the project that will likely cost about $15,000 Cdn. The group visiting Costa Rica ranges in age from nine to 68, and will include Vi c t o r i a ’ s Gerald Kazanowski, a former professional and Canadian Olympic basketball player, who will host a basketball camp for youth in Jaco. The visit by the Canadians will end with a revival meeting on the last weekend. “Mission trips serve a dual purpose, at least at the minimum to bless others and to help people who are in a different situation than we are,” said Molina. “You get so much when you do that. You help people where you’re going and get a big blessing in your own life.” And beyond helping out a family in need, Moline hopes the mission will encourage others to help those closer to home. “It might inspire people to get more mission-minded in their own life,” she said. “We believe that’s what Christ has asked us to do.” Submitted For more information or to donate (tax receipts are The exterior (top) and interior of the home being renoavailable), contact Tammy vated by members of the Seventh-day Adventist mission trip. I’ve known RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan long enough to predict that he would embrace the offer of civilians to help out by doing security patrols. No doubt he was disappointed last year when the volunteer Citizens on Patrol group disbanded. Gollan’s decades as a police officer haven’t made him cynical about the community he serves, but they have helped hone a highly practical approach to his job. In a meeting with volunteers last week, he welcomed the additional sets of eyes and ears that the patrols would offer as he encouraged them to re-establish the COPs organization. In a perverse way, it was probably a good thing that another break-in was reported after police made an arrest of a suspect last week. Had he proven to be the only one involved in the 18 or
more break-ins over the holiday season, it might have tempted at least some of the volunteers to step back, considering the problem to have been solved.
Gollan told the folks at the meeting that statistically Creston is among the safest communities in the province. So why would he welcome the surge of interest from this group? No doubt it is in part because the existence of groups like Citizens on Patrol makes safe communities even safer. When residents come together under banners like COPs and Block Watch it heightens the sense that we are all in Lorne Eckersley this together, that we don’t simply sit back and point fingers when there is a crime Gollan is the first one to say problem. that police don’t make safe comAnd, like it or not, Creston does munities, but residents do. Tax dollars should not help CVWMA To the Editor: In the Dec. 12 issue of your paper, a front page headline declared that the four Regional District of Central Kootenay directors from areas A, B, C and the Town of Creston were joining a local committee to deal with issues at the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area (CVWMA). Whether it means anything or not, I wish to declare that this is the best news I have heard in a long time. It means the public will have a form of representation to the management of the CVWMA after years of being shunted out. Having said that, I wish to declare my personal opinion: The taxpayers of the RDCK should not pay one cent to the remedy process of the “historical neglect” that has taken place by the management authorities and the government of B.C. in the past 40-plus years. Unless these RDCK directors are donating their time, that is precisely what is going to happen. If they are not donating their time and all the directors present their normal charge for attending meetings and for travel, costs could run as high as $600 a meeting. I wish to respectfully suggest that the first order of business should be that the committee applies for funding from earned dollars produced by the Columbia River development to cover costs of this committee. Earned dollars are the millions of dollars in downstream benefits contributed to the Columbia Basin Trust to compensate for storage of water. These dollars should be paid to the RDCK to compensate the total cost of the RDCK helping to remedy the historical neglect of the CVWMA. It must forever be remembered that the Columbia River development destroyed a natural wetland, which had to be reclaimed to an artificial wetland. In the process, the powers in charge never put in place a proper management authority and funding to support this important transformation. The results are physically visible in neglected access maintenance, blocking of public accesses and compromising of the river dike by grazing livestock, and so on. Cyril Colonel Wynndel
Choose wisely when donating To the Editor: Hello to everyone of our beautiful world. I am not a philosopher; nevertheless, I appreciate beauty in its nature. Some people will call us different, but I do not care as long as I get my message across in another matter. I have noticed some children go to bed hungry. We in our Western world do not realize the extent of the suffering these people are going through. I can recall looking at a video of a teenaged African who was suffering from hunger, obviously, with tears coming down his cheeks. It just broke my heart that we have plenty and others have so

little. I know I cannot change the world all by myself. I would if I could. So with these thoughts in our minds, let’s give to a proper organization that sees the need to distribute where it should be. I know I am asking the impossible. Take a look at some of these centres. Only 10 per cent goes to the needy, leaving 90 per cent to the administrations. That’s a crying shame. So do we dare ask for some changes? Frankly, I don’t really know. With some supporting ideas coming from the public and our government, it can be achieved, but I am warning you that there will be obstacles to cope with. It seems just about everyone has a love for the almighty dollar. Richard Cote Creston
I invite you to research the meaning of responsible government in a socalled democratic country and ask yourself what it is going to look like in a few years. You might read up on the French Revolution of the late 1700s because, as I see it, there appears to be a similarity between that group and the present route of the poor and overtaxed of today. I am glad I will not be here to see it. In any case, I want you to know my pension cannot afford any more taxation, in particular for an institution that will afford me absolutely not one penny’s worth of good, an institution which, forever and a day, I and others like me will have to pay for forever, year after year, including the costs of misguided engineering and cost overruns. My suggestion for the rec centre was and will remain the same as for the proposed fire hall: Let those who want it pay for it and leave the poor to their subsistence and survival. See you at the sheriff’s sale where the rich get rich and the poor get poorer. F.M. Woods West Creston
Fire service would add to tax burden Deadline should have stayed same
To the Editor: For the record, my vote is no on West Creston fire protection. For the record, my vote for the Creston and District Community Complex to entice new doctors to the area who make somewhere in the area of $350,000 a year was also no, but my taxes got nearly doubled anyway for a facility I cannot afford to use even if I lived closer and had the time. These add-ons to the tax burden seem to appear with some regularity, and it also seems they are the brainchild of those with a cause or the rich with the affluence of a move from Calgary or Vancouver or employment in the North with one of the many corporate gougers. This affluence is not something I am averse to. More power to them; after all, the government loves them, and why not? On the other hand, the community of Creston is comprised of loggers, farmers and service people. These people were first here for the peace, quiet, slow pace and relatively low cost of living. Then in came the migrants from east and west with pocketsful of cash and they readily spend, thinking what they spent is hell of a deal compared with what they left behind. Rest assured that there is an enormous difference between the pay scales of the two different groups, and slowly but surely the latter group is being sidelined into serfdom, unable to negotiate a debt load, cope with soaring corporate greed and government at all levels increasing the tax burden without a thought in the world as to what is driving this garburator or any concerns for who can afford and who cannot afford. The “have” group, now established in the valley, suddenly is on a binge of want: “Get rid of that airstrip because it makes too much noise,” and “Build a rec centre because we need more doctors.” It would likely surprise you to know how many of these folks keep their money offshore and retain professionals who know how to circumvent taxes. The government must be able to see this shift occurring regardless of how subtle it is. The government will also be obligated to witness the downfall of the middle class with somewhere around 10 per cent, maybe less in the final analysis, of the population allocated to the upper class. You can snort if you like, but it is occurring as a direct result of government, corporate greed and the rich.
To the Editor: Time for joy! Time for the thesaurus. Let’s see now: affront, insult, betrayal. One could get a feeling as if spit landed on his face or a well-aimed kick at the shins with a frozen boot was delivered. Of course, it depends whose side you are on. After a protracted period of multicoloured fliers appearing on the mailboxes of West Creston roads proclaiming in underlined letters a deadline of Dec. 31, a miracle has happened. Yes, the unthinkable. Unexpected, out of the blue: a Jan. 15 extension. At this moment, dear reader, friend or neighbour, we can, I hope, sigh in a fresh breath. At least if we can believe the latest promise that this time for sure there will be no more extensions, and never mind the 50-50 count. Oh yes, the blabbering! I am talking about the very long, hard-to-bear fight for getting enough hoses, water, manpower and favourable winds to West Creston if the Lord decides to strike us with a fire. By now the votes have been counted, and if the lucky West Creston Fire Protection Society got its votes, corks are flying and the drawings are dusted off. Either way, I hope there will be no more insults or offending counterpointing fliers, and may the Lord have mercy on a peaceful coexistence. And here I am (a lonely neanderthal) asking Area C director Larry Binks and the Regional District of Central Kootenay: Who empowered you to continue? The clocks in every corner of the world struck midnight just as in Creston. What gall! Could you not stand like a gentleman and say, “Count”? Dang, how many times do have we an extra 10 minutes of hockey when Canada after three periods is losing by two goals to the dynamo, Moscow? And so, Mr. Binks and the RDCK, it is over and you have to bear the wrath of those whom you betrayed. Now that we are finished with the thesaurus, it is time for Fiddler on the Roof: We had an agreement! Frank Belavy West Creston

Avoid engaging in hollow discussion
For the last time, I want to review the eight practices of awakening beings: 1) have few desires, 2) know how much is enough, 3) enjoy serenity, 4) make diligent effort, 5) remember to be mindful, 6) practice meditation, 7) cultivate wisdom and 8) drop

dream of meeting once a month is closer to reality. We have no official name, no affiliation and only one goal in mind: to explore the problems, find solutions and work on implementing the most viable ones. We agreed there is a need to start with several local issues while educating ourselves and the community about bigger ones. The greatest asset coming out of it was people pulling together, taking no side, and with no selfish or narrowminded agenda, putting brains together for the common good in a way that drains nobody, belittles no individual and puts people and community together instead of breaking them up. The meeting brought into the open some fellow citizens with a wealth of experience willing to share how to turn NATO (no action, talk only) into ART (action replacing talk). This great recipe comes from one gentleman in attendance. Want to find out more? Come next time and bring a like-minded, serious, determined friend or a neighbour with you. For those who could not make it due to illness or other commitment, we will meet again at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Erickson Room at the Creston and District Community Complex. It is never too late to join a good cause, put mind, heart and soul to it, and above all, persevere together until it bears fruit. West Creston resident Vladimir Certik can be reached at 250-402-0055.
Fire department, emergency room teams offer great care after accident
To the Editor: I’d like to give out a big thank you to the Creston Fire Rescue team and the staff at the Creston Valley Hospital emergency room. Our kids, Will, Bailey and Cori, along with two women in the other car were involved in a serious car accident on Highway 3 between Salmo and Creston on Dec. 23. The fire department team did a great job getting the kids out of the wreck, stable, into ambulances and on the road to the ER. They gathered up all the personal items they saw and even rewrapped a few of the gifts that were wrecked. The staff at the ER also put in a stellar performance. They got everybody treated to their best abilities and kept us well informed. Thanks, everyone — it was much appreciated on an awful night. Daryl and Heather Forbes Okotoks, Alta.

Chinese garden offers glimpse into culture
Over the Christmas break, we had the opportunity to tour the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver. I have been meaning to get there for quite some time. It was recently named the world’s top city garden by National Geographic and garden of the year by the Garden Tourism Council of Canada.

The classical gardens feature asymmetrical arrangements of water features, rocks, plants, pathways, corridors and vistas. Everything is meant to be in balance with one another, yin and yang. Imported water-worn limestone functions as the backbone of the gardens, creating the feel of false mountains. Thunder Cats add three wins for six-game streak BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Three wins on the weekend — including their first shutout and first overtime win of the season — helped the Creston Valley Thunder Cats stay at the top of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division. A 9-0 shutout of the Revelstoke Grizzlies and a rare 7-2 drubbing of the Spokane Braves were highlights in a weekend that started with a close call — a 5-4 overtime win over the Columbia Valley Rockies. “It was not one of our best games,” said head coach Josh Hepditch. “We definitely got off to a slow start.” The Rockies scored three goals in the first period, which the visiting Thunder Cats responded to with two of their own, by Brandon Formosa (power play) and Jesse Collins, in the second period. Trevor Hanna and Ethan Rusnack (shorthanded) scored in the third period, but the Rockies’ Mitchell Rosko tied the score 4-4 with 2:39 left in regulation time. Collins scored the game-winner with 1:22 left in overtime. “The guys were a little bit excited to go into overtime, but not really because they knew the game should have been won in regulation time,” said Hepditch. On Saturday, the Thunder Cats hosted the Revelstoke Grizzlies, who currently sit at the bottom of the Doug Birks Division with 17 points. They had previously defeated the

Grizzlies 11-2 in November, so “we just wanted to worry about our game and not really worry about them,” said Hepditch. The game got off to a slow start, with no scoring in the first period, but Collins, Connor Kidd (unassisted) and Matti Jmaeff
scored in the second. The third period saw the Thunder Cats add 22 more shots — for a game total of 49 — with goals scored by Nicholas Thompson, Carson Cartwright (at 13:24 and 3:21), Hanna, Marcel Fuchs (unassisted) and Tyler Podgorenko.
“We have four really good lines, and we can just roll four lines and everyone can score,” said Hepditch. “Even the defense were chipping in. It helps in a three-game weekend if we can keep everyone playing and not tire guys out.” The game was a second shut-
out (his first was for the Kamloops Storm) for 17-year-old goaltender Kyle Michalovsky, who stopped 16 Grizzlies shots. For the Thunder Cats’ third game in three days, they travelled south to take on the Spokane Braves, a notoriously difficult team to beat on their home ice. In a game that was relatively disciplined for the Thunder Cats — they took four penalties and Spokane took 11 — Hanna and Cartwright scored in the first period for a 2-1 lead. Justin Post widened the gap with the second period’s only goal. In the third period, Kidd (at 16:0 and 12:09) and Seth Schmidt scored before a second Braves goal, which was followed by Hanna at 7:53 on a power play. On Friday, the Rockies will visit Creston. The Rockies currently hold fourth place in the Eddie Mountain Division with 30 points — well behind the Thunder Cats’ 54 — and this game will mark the third consecutive Friday they’re taken on the Thunder Cats. “We know where they stand and we stand,” said Hepditch. “We’re going to keep trying to play a good 60 minutes.” On Saturday, the Thunder Cats will head to Kimberley, where they will take on the Dynamiters, who currently hold the division’s second place, one point ahead of the Fernie Ghostriders’ 42. “They’re in second right behind us, so that’s going to be a big game,” said Hepditch. “It should be a good game, and we want to get two points and keep the spread we have now.”

Campbell’s offers convenience in West Creston
F
or two-and-a-half years, West Creston residents were without a convenience store — simply forgetting to stop at a grocery store could mean a several-kilometre round trip. “You’d drive by, think ‘I forgot to get milk’, and go all the way back to town,” said Del. But that Story and changed in May photos by 2013, when Michelle and Del Brian Campbell Lawrence opened Campbell’s Corner Store at the corner of Nick’s Island Road and Highway 3, filling a need in the community. “People would go to West Creston meetings and say it needs a store,” said Michelle, who worked at the store during its previous incarnation as Mugwumps. In addition to the canned goods, beverages, cereal and household items you’d expect from a convenience store, they offered seasonal produce in the summer — including organic produce from Brenda Bruns, asparagus and corn from Doug Sutcliffe, and strawberries from Phillip Lawrence — as well as Kootenay Meadows organic milk, Pickle Patch eggs, and Swan Valley Honey. From slightly farther afield are jerky from Cliff’s Meats in Kimberley, Dave’s Hot Pepper Jelly from Invermere. Del and Michelle even bring in their own veggies, which aren’t certified organic, but “anything we bring in from our garden has had nothing used on it for 35 years,” said Del. As if the selection of local products weren’t enough, they even took it a step further. Michelle has always wanted a restaurant, so she offers custom baking, breakfast, lunch and dinners-to-go at the store, which is open 6 a.m.-6 p.m. “I have a theory about food: Food has to be sexy,” she said. Taste is also important, as is
variety — this week’s dinnersto-go included roast beef with mashed potatoes, and perogies with Italian sausage, with each dinner announced daily on the store’s Facebook page. One customer who comes in every day for dinner told Michelle, “You’re the best cook ever. I love all your food.” “You cannot give him a bad meal,” she said. When Michelle was nine, her mother taught her to cook, and prior to that, “I meddled,” she said. “I cooked when my mother wasn’t home and hid my experiments under my bed.” She later taught her own children to cook, and it stuck with them — her oldest daughter was chef at Vancouver’s Pan Pacific Hotel for 10 years and now cooks for BC Ferries, while another daughter is a baker at Overwaitea Foods. And her oldest granddaughter is taking a culinary course at Vancouver
Community College. While food is a large part of the store’s focus, it caters to customers in other ways, too, such as with a lending library, which allows people to drop off read books in exchange for others. “They bring them in and take them out by the bagful,” said Michelle. It’s been a bit of a journey for Del and Michelle — they married in 1984, got divorced and married other people, then got divorced and remarried each other in the late 1990s — but they couldn’t be more pleased with the community’s support. The chairs and tables near the back are often full of their friends and neighbours. “We joked one time about taking the groceries out and putting in chairs,” said Michelle. “Basically, we’re here to have fun,” said Del. “Sometimes there are half a dozen people here, just laughing.”

2014 Infiniti Q50 challenges the old order Infiniti has had a bit of an identity crisis over the past year with a wholesale change in the way it names its products. Gone is the JX crossover, it’s called the QX60 now and the G 37 sedan has been replaced with the Q50 sedan. Q signifies for cars and QX for crossovers or SUVs. The outgoing G37 was already a very worthy on-road performer but a bit too simplistic in the inside. Now, Infiniti has taken things up a notch with the Q50, adding a dynamic look, sumptuous interior and class leading technology. Looks It could be argued that the current BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class are a bit conservative, while this Q50 and the major competitor, Lexus IS, are much edgier. This is especially true with the front grille. The rest of the Q50 is nicely sculpted, with flowing lines and an almost elegant rear end. Sold as a base model, sport trim, all wheel drive (AWD), premium, and even a hybrid, there is a broad market for this sedan. Starting at $37,500 and ramping up to the AWD sport model at $49,950, there is a substantial discount with the Q50 when you compare it to a similarly equipped BMW. The base model comes with 17-inch wheels but most of the higher trim levels are equipped with 19-inch wheels. The car seen here is the AWD premium model starting at $43,400. CURB LANE CRAZIES Did somebody change the curb lane into the fast lane and not tell me? Verdict The benchmark in the premium compact sedan market has been the BMW 3 Series but the gap is narrowing. This new Q50 looks great, has a wonderful interior, power to spare and solid
handling dynamics. On price, the BMW 328i AWD is the closest and starts at $46,200 but is equipped with a 241hp 4-cylinder. The direct competitor on power is the much more expensive 335is AWD. The Lexus IS350 AWD is another premium offering from Japan, and it starts at a very competitive $44,000. As much as the Japanese automakers like to challenge the German makers, they really end up competing with each other. Yes, this is a worthy car but the one thing you cannot factor into the buying decision is the badge appeal that storied brands like Mercedes, BMW and Audi provide.

Secrets of the original Volkswagen Beetle By Rob Sass The original air-cooled VW Beetle lasted an incredible 58 years in production, during which time it was fundamentally unchanged. It’s a record that will likely never be approached, let alone broken. Although nearly everyone of a certain age has at least one Beetle story or fond memory, there are a few things still not generally known about the beloved car. Here are five noteworthy facts: 1. The original classic Beetle didn’t leave production until 2003, although it was last sold in North America in 1979 (by which time the water-cooled
Rabbit had replaced it), the original air-cooled Beetle was produced in Puebla, Mexico, until 2003. It’s essentially identical to the cars produced in Germany for export to the U.S. in the
1970s. 2. The original Beetle was the brainchild of Adolf Hitler. Keen to put ordinary Germans on the newly constructed autobahn superhighways in their own cars, a subsidized savings plan involving a coupon booklet was devised. When a family filled their booklet, they were supposed to get their car. WWII intervened and all pre-war Beetle deliveries were limited to Nazi party officials. Private owners didn’t get their hands on a Beetle until after the war. 3. Germans don’t remember it as fondly as we continued on page 17 do because of its connection with the dictator

who brought ruin to their country. And it serves as a reminder of the lean times before the West German economic miracle took hold meaning post-war Germans don’t have the same warm and fuzzy feelings about the Beetle that American ex-hippies do. 4. The Beetle may have been inexpensive, but it was never cheap. Gaps were tight and doors sealed well. Additionally, it was a unibody car with a very flat floor with few openings. All of this meant that the car would actually float for at least several minutes after hitting the water before turning into a small sub! 5. The Beetle was the subject of one of the most influential ad campaigns of the 20th century. Most recently lampooned on the TV show “Mad Men,” it was among the first national campaigns to utilize irony and self-deprecating wit. A tiny black-and-white photo of a Beetle in a sea of white space with only the headline “Think Small” was the first of the ads introduced in 1959 by the agency Doyle Dane Bernbach. Frechette sharing music in Sasquatch concert SUBMITTED
Winnipeg-based singer/songwriter Dan Frechette is a musical force, with a wealth of musical knowledge and experience. He’s written more than 1,300 songs. He’s been signed to a major songwriting contract and he’s busked on street corners and in subways all over North America and Europe. He’s toured with a First Nations rock band, played solo at several folk festivals and he’s the man who penned well-known songs for the Duhks and
Dervish, among others. And he’s performing Jan. 24 at the Snoring Sasquatch. Frechette’s fascination with music began early. When he was four or five, he recalls, he sat for hours in his room playing his uncle’s Johnny Horton, Buck Owens and Chubby Checker records over and over and over again. “I had a cheap-looking Fisher Price record player,” Frechette says. “I used to put North to Alaska from Johnny Horton on 45 rpm when I was four years old so he sang up in my key.” Frechette grew up on the workingclass side of Pinawa, Man., 60 miles east of Winnipeg. The big city’s oldies station was all he could pick up on the radio, so he schooled himself in the hit sounds of the ’60s and ’70s and read voraciously about the era. “I had the Rolling Stone book, The Illustrated History of Rock & Roll, and I must have read it 50 times by the time I was eight or nine,” he says. “I knew what chart position Just Like a Woman (by Bob Dylan) was in 1966, all that kind of thing.” By the time he was 11, Frechette had filled scrapbooks with lyrics to the songs he heard on the radio — “songs like One Tin Soldier or Lay Lady Lay.” — making his own words up when he couldn’t make them out. His teachers noticed his poetic talents and pushed him to keep writing. At about this time, Frechette had acquired his first guitar and began exploring his Beatles influences. When a next-door neighbour loaned Frechette a few of Bob Dylan’s albums, the 13-year-old’s eyes were opened wide. “The first time I heard Desolation Row I was completely blown away. I thought it was the most amazing saga I had ever listened to,” Frechette says. “It changed my whole life, hearing that song. It had an apocalyptic madness and I’d listen to it and I wouldn’t always understand what he said but I understood the way he said it. Now it reminds me of the stuff that Kerouac or Ginsberg wrote; it’s like a beat poem. “I’ve never heard a song that affected me so much. When I was 14 or 15,
Songwriter Dan Frechette performs at the Snoring Sasquatch on Jan. 24.
nobody understood me because I was going on and on about Desolation Row or Visions of Joanna or whatever. At 17, EMI Music Publishing offered him a development deal, an experience that ultimately soured him on the music business. “I’d be playing the songs on my 12-string acoustic,” he says, “then the producer would bring me into the studio and I’d sit there and play my song and then afterwards they’d put it through some crazy tube amp thing and add big drums and distorted guitars and turn it into some sort of heavy rock song.” But he didn’t give up on music, and began busking, travelling from Arizona through California and up the Pacific Coast, later making a similar trip through Europe. “I started thinking in my own terms about songs, what a song should do,” Frechette says. “To me, songs are powerful; they should have a meaning and they should last a long time. I had to imagine a thousand people on a hilltop singing the lyrics that I was writing. So, I started listening back to myself more critically, with a ‘this is crap’ attitude. Busking also really helped me with that — helping me see my
Submitted
songs from a very cold perspective.” Frechette also began focusing on his craft by reading books about songwriting and by writing little stories that he wanted to tell. His songs, he knew, were getting stronger, and he began writing the material that characterizes — and became — Lucky Day, A Quick Walk With Me and Hitting The Hard Road Straight. Now, with his albums earning plaudits, praise and airplay across North America, Frechette is sharing his songs on tour — and he means it when he says “share”. “If I was playing guitar by myself in my room, just sitting there alone, I’d get bored quickly because something would be missing,” he says. “The people in front of me would be missing and so would the interaction. The feeling that I get when I hear something that moves me is, ‘Man, I wish that musician was next to me so I could tell him/her how that affected me — so I could share the feeling. ’ “To share and to have something be shared, musically, is the ultimate.” Tickets are $12 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books, Buffalo Trails Coffee House and Black Bear Books, and $15 at the door, which opens at 7 p.m.; the show begins at 8.

David (Dave) Melville Phypers Elmer John Racho July 29, 1929 ~ January 2, 2014
David (Dave) Melville Phypers passed away on January 1, 2014 at the age of 70 years. Born and raised in the Creston Valley, Dave lived a full and varied life, but more than anything he did or had, the love of his family, his wife Diane, son David, daughter Melissa and his six grandchildren were utmost in his life. Their whereabouts took him many times across Canada; north to south, east to west. He was always interested in everything his siblings and their families were doing. Love and concern for family was evident by his involvement in their lives, from lending a helping hand, ofÀciating at many of their weddings, providing advice or a listening ear, ‘Uncle Dave’ was there if you needed him. Dave left Creston at the age of sixteen to work in Calgary. In 1962 he went to Surrey, BC to work. There he met and married his wife Diane in 1964. Dave returned to Creston after a 20-year absence to live a more rural lifestyle, which included raising hogs and cattle - something he really enjoyed. Through the years he loved to ride his Harley, enjoying trips with friends and international travel, which included Asia, Europe and tropical destinations. Over the last decade Dave found pleasure in collecting old tractors, often detouring at great lengths to visit other like-minded collectors. He was best known in the valley for being a loyal friend to many and being one of the hardest working men you’ve ever met. To many he was known as ‘Super Dave’ because of his skill, dedication and unwavering work ethic. Above all, he had a Àrm and lasting faith that sustained him throughout his life, especially the last few months. Dave was predeceased by his father George Alfred Phypers in May 2000. Dave is survived by his wife Diane; son Dave (Lee); daughter Melissa Phypers (Gilles Monvoisin); granddaughters Annaliese, Daena, Kacie Shaylagh, Amelie; grandson Ethan; his mother Sarah Mathilde; brothers and sisters Marie (Maurice) Taylor, Dorothy (Ted) Morton, George 'Geordy' (Jean), Elizabeth 'Bessie' (Jim) McGeachy, Ruth (John) Morton, Daniel (Pearl), Phillip (Charmene), Lois Phypers, Stephen (Diane), Eunice (Tony) Mulder, as well as many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held in April 2014. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to the charity of your choice.
With deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Elmer John Racho on January 2, 2014 in Creston, BC.
Elmer was born in Edam, SK on July 29, 1929. At age 11, he moved with his mother and siblings to Richmond, BC. He started working at an early age to help support the family, starting with a chicken and egg farm. When he was 15 he started working for Ridley Ice and Cold Storage in the Marpole area of Vancouver, BC. He delivered ice to businesses and stores, later doing mechanical work on refrigeration equipment and vehicles. July 16, 1954 he married Beverly Louise Racho in Richmond, BC, where they had 4 daughters from 1955 to 1961. He worked at Ridley Ice until 1970 where he did a brief stint of highway hauling to and from the US just before purchasing Riverland Farms and moving his family to Lillooet, BC. There he worked long and hard producing quality hay until 1994. While still operating the farm he operated B & E Trucking with his young family friend Brian Grossler for many years. He also drove fuel truck during some winters for Imperial Oil in Lillooet. In the summer of 1994 Elmer and Beverly sold Riverland Farms and retired to the Creston area. Elmer was predeceased by his parents, Olga Racho and Gustav Racho; daughter Linda; brother Clifford; brother-in-law Allan Forsyth and nephew David Forsyth.
He will be missed by so many.

He will be lovingly and forever missed by his wife of 60 years, Beverly Racho; daughters Pat (Don) Fritz, Creston, BC, June (Dwayne) Miller, Lillooet, BC, Kris (Glad) Kane, Grande Prairie, AB; grandsons Josh Bissat, Max Bissat and Garrett Miller; sister Polly Forsyth, Sechelt, BC; brothers Bill Goll, North Battleford, SK and Bob Racho, Hedley, BC; nieces Carol Forsyth, Barb Morecroft, April Menzies, Debbie Gunderson and nephews Wilf, Victor and Ed Goll. Although Elmer left school at an early age, he was self taught in many things and he completed courses to improve his knowledge. He read books and took courses in TV and radio repair, computer repair, gunsmithing, mechanical repair and horsemanship. He learned to play the harmonica and guitar and his favorite song to play was Beautiful Dreamer - all done without formal training. He was able to Àx anything that moved on 4 wheels, mechanical or anything electronic. He loved being busy even when he retired. He enjoyed camping, Àshing, hunting and riding around the farm on his horse. When he was in Creston he started doing a lot of target practice. He belonged to the Lillooet Rod and Gun Club, Canadian Shooting Sports Association and later the Creston Valley Rod and Gun Club. Elmer was a kind and caring man who loved his family most of all. He was a fantastic father and husband and will always be greatly missed. No Service by request. G.F. With Our Thanks The Ambulance Service for their quick response and care of Elmer Racho on Dec 25th and again on Dec 28th, 2013. Incredible response considering where he lived. The doctors and nurses that cared for him while in Emergency. After being admitted, the nurses for all the care and support they provided to keep our father and husband comfortable and free of pain, with compassion. Dr. John Griffioen, Elmer’s primary care physician throughout the start of his illness in 2007 until the very end. Your kindness, compassion, support and all around help for our family at all times, sometimes going beyond what is probably considered normal. We and Creston are lucky to have you here. Lin at the clinic for all your help and support with our families’ scheduling. Cheryl Taylor for personal support for Elmer and the rest of our family at the very end. Sara Jackson for your support over the last weeks. Wanda Wanek for all your help and being there for us whenever and for whatever we needed. Dennis & Gillian at G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel for their knowledge, kindness and help in a lot of the paper work that comes at a time like this. Everyone else that has called or sent condolences at this time. We would not have been able to handle any of this without everyone’s kindness, knowledge and the various different kinds of help and support.
Thank you all very much. We are very grateful that we live in Creston, BC! The family of Elmer Racho Beverly Racho, Pat and Don Fritz, Kris and Glad Kane, June and Dwayne Miller

Blackfish is a 2013 documentary film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. The film focuses on the captivity of Tilikum, a killer whale involved in the deaths of three individuals, and the consequences of keeping killer whales in captivity. A review by Rotten Tomatoes stated that the film is an aggressive, impassioned documentary that will change the way you look at performance killer whales. According to Wikipedia, SeaWorld refused to participate in the production of Blackfish, and later claimed the film was
inaccurate saying in a statement to CNN that the film is misleading and exploits a tragedy. SeaWorld further claimed that the documentary paints a distorted picture of SeaWorld and they then responded with a public letter rebutting the claims of the film. The documentary has motivated animal rights activists to protest to several high profile bands and singers, including Barenaked Ladies, Heart, and Willie Nelson, causing them to cancel concerts at SeaWorld. Friends of the Cinema will be presenting the controversial film at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Prince Charles Theatre.

Author Valerie Comer is library’s living book CRESTON VALLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY
Valerie Comer ’s life on a small farm in the Creston Valley provides the seed for stories of contemporary inspirational romance. Like many of her characters, Comer and her family grow much of their own food and are active in the local food movement. She only hopes her creations enjoy their happily ever afters as much as she does hers, shared with her husband, adult kids and adorable granddaughters. Comer has always loved to read and write. An early memory is of an attic bedroom, lying side-by-side with her big sister on their tummies while Sis taught her to read out of Dick and Jane books. Though that particular primer left little to wonder about, the spark was ignited. She tried her hand at writing stories as a child, but they never got past a few pages. What did she, a child growing up in northern Manitoba, know of things such as horses and sailboats? Certainly not enough to write stories about them! And so she mostly read. She read every book in the cupboard at the back of her classroom; the three-room rural school did not even have an
entire room for a library, nor did any nearby town. And she asked for books whenever anyone wondered what kind of gift she’d like. A job with built-in downtime gave Valerie the opportunity to pursue her dream of writing. By 2010, she had written eight novels, some of which were even deemed worthy of second and third drafts. She’d begun to tighten up the stories and enter contests. The opening scenes of Majai’s Fury garnered Valerie a finalist position in the 2007 Genesis Contest. She revised the novel further based on critiques and comments by the judges. Then she entered it in a private contest by author Tosca Lee and won first place. In 2008, Off Beat placed third in the speculative division of Genesis. In 2009, the revised version of Majai’s Fury was a finalist in Genesis. In 2011, she sold a contemporary inspirational romance novella to Barbour Books and landed an agent. Today, Comer has two published fiction works under her belt with more on the way. She writes farm lit, where food meets faith, injecting experience laced with humor into her stories. Raspberries and Vinegar, first in her series, A Farm Fresh Romance, released in August
2013. The second in the series, Wild Mint Tea, will be released in March. Snowflake Tiara follows close behind, set to release in the fall 2014. Find out more at www.valeriecomer.com. The Creston Valley Public Library’s Living Books speaker series is a way for community members to learn from each other. Living “books” are real people, your friends and neighbours, volunteering to share aspects of their own “story”. Through living books, the library seeks to encourage the sharing of knowledge and passion between people. Each month the library hosts a gettogether where a member of the community shares their personal experiences. Topics are varied, from art to travel to local history to coping with loss, and everything in between. Attendees of the speaker series learn more about the people in their community and their diverse backgrounds and expertise. Hear Comer’s story of words and wonder at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at the library. Admission is free. For more information on the Living Books speaker series, including upcoming living books or how to become a living book, please contact Gail at 250-428-4141 or email gail@ crestonlibrary.com.
