Average local sale prices hold strong AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Despite trying times, Cariboo North, including the Gold Pan City, continues an upward trend in the housing market. While housing sales were slightly down in Quesnel, from 295 in 2012 to 250 in 2013, the average sale price held strong at $183,500; additionally fewer homes are on the market, from 233 in 2012, to 207. Real estate members of the BC Northern Real Estate Board (BCNREB) reported 4,891 property sales worth $1.2 billion in 2013 through the Multiple Listing Service (MLS), up from last year’s 4,696 sales worth $1.08 billion. “The BC Northern area continued its upward trend in sales volumes for the fourth year in a row and the average sale price for the entire area rose by more than four percent,” BCNREB president Gisela Janzen said. By comparison in Williams Lake, 336 sales worth $68.6 million were reported through MLS in 2013, up from 315 sales worth $68 million the previous year. Half of the 118 single family homes sold in 2013 sold for less than $221,500. Thirty parcels of vacant land, 85 homes on acreage, 14 townhomes, 27 manufactured homes in parks and 34 manufactured homes on land were also sold in 2013. At the end of December there were 358 properties of all types available through MLS in the Williams Lake area, up slightly from 352 properties at the same time last year. In the City of Prince George, 1,291 properties worth $314 million sold in 2013, compared with 1,244 properties worth $294 million in 2012. At year-end there were 639 properties of all types available through MLS compared to 620 properties at the end of 2012. “Markets in the Northwest region performed extremely well, mostly driven by large economic projects and developments,” Janzen said. “Markets in the Southern region remained largely unchanged from the previous year mainly due to a poorly performing labour market. Overall, BC Northern appears to be most resilient in this post-recession period when compared to the rest of the province.”

Design Flooring is a family business and thanks to the tremendous support from family and friends and various businesses across the community, the Lefebvre family is back in business in the old Raider Sales building, after a devastating fire Jan. 14. “I was in the building and saw some light smoke,” Jeff Lefebvre said. “I made sure everyone cleared the building and then called 911.” Design Flooring has been in the building since 1985 when they turned a machine shop into a stylish flooring store. “We like that location, like the businesses around us and we plan to rebuild on the same location,” Jeff said. As the fire advanced, Jeff, who is assistant fire chief of the Bouchie Lake Fire Department, knew the building couldn’t be saved. “Once I saw the flames in the ceiling I knew it was gone,” he said. “I told them to concentrate on saving the other businesses in the building.” Jeff’s wife Heather was

at home with one of their daughters who was ill. After Jeff called her, Heather called her other daughters who already knew of the fire. “Video of the fire was on youtube within half an hour,” Jeff said. “My family around the province knew almost that quick. My phone was ringing off the hook.” Even suppliers began calling him almost immediately and Jeff assured them he would be up and running somewhere and told them to start looking for samples. “Everyone’s been great,” Jeff said. During the fire, Service Electric threw their doors open, offering a place to warm up and supplied coffee and pizza to the firefighters and the family. Jeff and his staff began working on re-establishing the business. They started while the fire was still burning, working off Heather’s tailgate then moving to various homes over the next two days. Once they had chosen to open in the old Raider Sales building, local businesses were there for them. James and Sons came

Black Press survey gauges ‘pulse’ of BC North communities

Readers of Black Press BC North community newspapers reaching from Ashcroft to Prince Rupert will have a chance to win a cool $1,000 for completing an online survey that will help local businesses better understand customers in their community. Black Press has partnered with respected research company Pulse Research to bring the Pulse of BC North survey to readers, which looks at the shopping plans and priorities of our readers and their media reading habits. Reader answers will

help gauge the current consumer climate to help local businesses craft new and better ways to serve their clients and customers. Responses will be kept confidential; reader contact information will only be gathered in order to enter the name into a prize draw for one of two, $1,000 cash prizes to be given away across the Black Press BC North region. Readers who submit the survey before Feb. 3 will also have their name entered into the early bird draw with a chance to win one of ten $50 grocery gift cards.

“We are pleased to be able to offer this information and are certain it will be beneficial to both our readers and local businesses.” Lorie Williston, Black Press

The online survey will take about 35 to 40 minutes, erasing the need for readers to spend long periods of time on the phone answering questions. “We are very excited to be a part of this service to the business

community,” Black Press BC North president Lorie Williston said. “We are pleased to be able to offer this information and are certain it will be beneficial to both our readers and local businesses.” The Pulse Research survey has already been successful for businesses. In fact, one client took the results of the research to the bank and was able to secure a loan to expand their business, on the strength of the research. Among the benefits of the study is allowing businesses

to identify niche areas of their business, including showing potential areas for growth or expansion. Pulse Research was founded in 1985 to provide publishing clients with researchbased advertising sales and marketing programs designed to get results. They are able to deliver insight to businesses who are currently faced with an ever-changing mix of products and services, including web, niche, special sections and deals. Check out www. pulseresearch.com/ bcnorth to complete the survey and to enter the prize draws.

TELUS warns of scam increase In recent days TELUS has noted a significant increase in the frequency of a common phone scam. Fraud artists are trying to trick customers out of personal information by posing as representatives of TELUS or other wellknown companies offering free trips or other prizes. The fraudsters ‘spoof’ their caller IDs, using specialized internet services to create false phone numbers to make it appear they are calling from a local number. TELUS

believes they are in fact calling from offshore. People who provide personal information to fraudsters could suffer identity theft or other fraud. Personal information includes names, addresses, birthdates, account numbers, passwords, credit card numbers, etc. TELUS is warning customers to be aware of these frauds, and not give out personal information. Simply hang up when scammers call. If you are unsure about the legitimacy

of an email or phone call and believe you may have given personal information

to a scam artist and need assistance securing your TELUS account, please

call TELUS Fraud Management at 1-877-567-2062.

Estate Considerations for RRSP, RRIF and TFSA Holders

One of the best gifts you can leave your spouse and family is an orderly and well thought-out estate plan. For many Canadians, their Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) and Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) can represent a major portion of their estate. Many may not be aware of the proper way to incorporate these saving vehicles into their estate plan. What Happens to Your RRSP or RRIF? If you don’t have a “qualified” beneficiary named, then the value of your plan immediately before your death is included as income in your terminal tax return. A “qualified” beneficiary named in your will or RRSP/ RRIF plan contract, such as your spouse or commonlaw partner, can receive the funds and then choose to transfer them tax-deferred to their own RRSP or RRIF. Potential Risks and Opportunities Assigning a non-qualified person as beneficiary, such as a healthy, non-dependent child or other relative, may have unintended consequences. It may harm the other estate heirs because an RRSP/RRIF passes over at gross value while taxes owed on it are paid out of the estate. For example, giving an adult child your RRSP and another adult child your equivalently valued non-registered investments may result in the latter receiving less after taxes are settled. Problems also arise when all your children are named as equal beneficiaries, but one predeceases you. His or her own family may be left out from any distribution if the plan document is not specific enough. What Happens to Your TFSA? Interestingly, earnings in your TFSA continue to hold a tax-exempt status upon your death. After that date, though, any additional earnings in that year are taxable so it is important to consider how and when TFSA funds should be distributed. As with RRSPs and RRIFs, a surviving spouse or common-law partner has special status in most provinces and can be named in a will or contract as “successor holder” of your TFSA. This makes it possible to transfer all your TFSA funds without affecting the successor’s contribution room. Potential Risks and Opportunities Not declaring your spouse as the successor holder and naming him or her only as a beneficiary can be a risk. As a mere beneficiary, a spouse can still receive the money tax-free under a special “exempt contribution” rule, but his or her contribution will be limited to the value of the deceased’s TFSA at the time of death. Any excess value will be taxed as income that year. While this would likely not result in a large tax bill today, as TFSAs continue to grow, this could have a significant impact in the future. Whether it’s an RRSP, RRIF or TFSA, perhaps the most common unintended error is not updating or reviewing named beneficiaries. After a divorce or end of a relationship, for example, it’s not uncommon for a former spouse or partner to still be named as a beneficiary. Changes in blended families or other relations can also cause complications.

Council begins budget process

Council approved a new budget principles policy which outlines the principles for developing the annual operating budget, five-year capital budget, the five-year financial plan bylaw and tax rate bylaw. These principles include: • emphasis on providing high quality municipal services; • paying for current operating expenditures with current revenues; • provision for sufficient funding for adequate maintenance and orderly replacement of capital items; • future maintenance needs and costs for all new capital facilities; • strong customer service and productivity improvements with a focus on cost savings; • maximizing grant funding from senior governments, providing they support priority city initiatives; • supporting the activities of Quesnel Community and Economic Development Corporation; • consideration of new revenue generation activities which create or enhance nontax revenue streams;

• moving towards user fee based funding, where appropriate, to lower the pressure on taxation; • moving towards full cost recovery on services provided by the city to Regional District residents; and • analysis of new municipal services requested and how to fund the services. Council took a first look at some preliminary budget numbers. To begin the process, staff prepared what is commonly referred to as a “status quo” budget. This means the budget is prepared based on maintaining existing service levels and taking items such as inflation into consideration. There are many variables for council to consider going forward, such as new cost items and increases to reserves (like the Quesnel Works: Capital Reinvestment Reserve and the General Equipment Reserve), and exploring new revenue ideas. As a result, this initial budget is really just a starting point for council. The first official budget meeting takes place on Monday, Jan. 27 to review the operating budget. The next meeting is on Monday,

Feb. 17 and the formal public input session is on Monday, Feb. 24. All meetings begin at 7 p.m. and the public is encouraged to attend. If you are unable to attend these meetings and wish to provide input on the budget, please contact City Hall. BC Assessment has sent its 2014 assessment notices and an overview of the changes in Quesnel was provided to council. While this information is preliminary (the final numbers are released in March), it provides critical input as the city prepares its 2014 budget.

Other news • Council approved using social media as part of the city’s communication tools. Facebook and Twitter will be launched this week. • Brandee Schutz was officially appointed as a new member to the Museum and Heritage Commission. • Council was successful in their application for an infrastructure planning grant and has been approved for $10,000. This grant will provide an overall sustainability report of current water systems.

Disability in the workplace workshop slated The B.C. government is working alongside the disability and business communities to provide an opportunity for all British Columbians to participate in a public consultation. This is a chance to help come up with solutions to help B.C. become the most progressive place for people with disabilities to live in Canada. Do you have ideas or thoughts on how government, businesses and communities can increase accessibility and decrease barriers for people living with disabilities? You are invited, Jan. 22 to the Best Western Tower Inn, 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Sign up at engage.gov.bc.ca/disabilitywhitepaper/about/community-consultation/ . T

he sentences in the recent sexual assault case involving under-age individuals are as lenient as they are laughable. In September, two 16-year old boys admitted in a Santa Clara County Juvenile Court room they had sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl and photographed the attack. The photographs were then distributed to classmates; she committed suicide a short time later. Another boy, 17, also admitted to the same felonies. Their sentence? The 16-year-olds were ordered to service 30 days during weekends in juvenile detention. The 17-year-old was sentenced to 45 consecutive days. It is absolutely shocking a court system would be so lenient with such an atrocious crime. They raped a young girl, evidenced it with photos, shared those photos and their punishment is a few months of weekends? How does this deter other sickminded perverts? How does this showcase a step in the right direction for our daughters, granddaughters and nieces? By 16 individuals know right from wrong, this is not an example of “kids being kids” or a lack of good judgement. This behaviour is sick, twisted and monstrous. At the very least the courts could have ordered intensive counseling. Even more disgusting and discouraging is the pattern laid out by the courts in similar cases. In September of 2012 Audrie Potts, 16, hung herself after consuming a laced drink, falling asleep and waking up with her pants off and lewd comments written on her body. Potts later found out photos were distributed of her assault, then shared through text message. Two 16-yearold boys were charged and received one and two years respectively in juvenile detention. If we continue in this pattern of increased leniency, courts will be handing out lunch-hour detentions for rape and murder. It’s up to communities to take a stand and speak up against a justice system that seems to have forgotten its purpose. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer

On dragonfly wings, we start again O ur mother’s celebration of life was held on January 11, one month after she passed away, and except for the days immediately following her death, it was the most emotionally draining time my brother and I have ever experienced. It was also incredibly healing. We cried, we laughed, we shared stories and we expressed regrets. But in the end, we felt the love – for her and for us. It’s been said that funerals are for the living and not for the dead. To me, it feels like they exist for both. The honouring of a person’s life is important, whether it’s a formal public gathering or an informal private farewell. The opportunity for friends and family to say their goodbyes and attain some kind of closure seems necessary to most of us. But a public funeral isn’t reserved just for people who knew the deceased. There were people at our mom’s

On A Brighter Note service who had never met her before, but were there to support us. That felt amazing. The subject of death scares many people away, though, so some keep their distance. And a lot of people have no idea what to say, so they might say nothing at all. I understand these feelings completely. When I was in my early 20s, before I had ever lost a loved one, the subject of death was terrifying to me, as was saying the wrong thing. But there’s obviously no way to avoid it. We all eventually die, and

a common belief she had heard, or just a personal one that she felt, but whichever it was, I’ve loved dragonflies and thought of them in that way ever since. Her passing has been extremely difficult, but I recognize that her departure is a new beginning for us. The woman who gave us life no longer exists physically in the world as we know it, but her love will live within our hearts, and it will grow if we nurture it. Every time I see the image of a dragonfly – which will be often since I have several – I will be reminded of our beautiful mother’s love, and the fun, happy lives she wanted us to live. She would have wanted us to fly, and we will. unless we die young, we all experience losing people we love. I think the reason some of us stress out about what to say is because we can’t think of anything that doesn’t sound cliché, or we can’t think of anything that could alleviate the sorrow. From my own personal experience, just a simple “I’m sorry for your loss” feels supportive. It’s not necessarily the words that are comforting, but the acknowledgment. I’m certainly no expert on grieving or death, and I have no idea what’s around the corner for me emotionally in regards to my mother’s passing. All I know is that loss is a part of life, and I just have to feel the feelings as they come and live as fully and fearlessly as I can. Some days I’ll be able to, and some days I won’t. Many years ago our mother told me that dragonflies symbolized new beginnings. I don’t know if that was

Not impressed with HMC

Editor: I read the article regarding recruitment funding to entice physicians to come to areas like Quesnel. What a sad state of affairs when doctors, who supposedly are for patients first, and money second, need to be bribed in order to bring help to outlying areas. The plot thickens Beverly Fox with her latest Christian fiction, Piper in Crisis. Annie Gallant photo

Bev Fox’s latest novel Piper in Crisis is another homerun ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

K

im Piper is back. Author Beverly Fox has published her second, Piper in Crisis, in a trilogy of the life and learning of her main character, a middleaged, recently widowed, Christian woman who struggles to make sense of the best and worst of her life. Throughout the book Kim has conversations with God in an effort to understand why things happen, what they mean and in some cases how could God let such bad things happen. “In the first book Piper’s Call, Kim is coming to terms with having lost her husband who died in

a hunting accident,” Fox said. “It’s a fairly light book but still has spiritual truths which Kim must understand and regain her trust in God.” In her second book, Kim is truly in crisis. The opening chapter brings an evil character from the first book, driven by revenge against the woman who put him behind bars, right into Kim’s home. An ominous beginning. The reader is left wondering how the rest of the book can measure up against such a violent beginning. Fox deftly weaves a story around the trauma Kim experiences, the trauma in her friends’ life, both past and present,

with new elements designed to flesh out the good and bad in the characters. The author, who enjoys her ongoing relationship with God through Bible study, uses the truths she discovers to guide her writing. “I don’t know exactly how the plot is going to develop, but I do know I don’t want a heroine who is perfect. Everyone has flaws and Kim is no exception – we’re all a work in progress,” Fox said. “And life isn’t a fairy tale. Bad things happen to good people. We need to have faith in God. He’s in the business of helping people move from flawed to less flawed.” Kim’s survives her brush

care

with violence but the question is: can her faith survive? Through a series of bad decisions, misspoken words and rash actions, she finds herself in over her head, struggling to know what is the right decision. “I want the reader to like Kim, recognize she isn’t without faults but still a person worth redeeming,” Fox said. “I also wanted to expand on other character’s relationship with God and I think I achieved that in this book. “I want it to be a spiritual journey for the characters just as I’m on a spiritual journey. I don’t just want Bible backups.” I want it to be lessons

with real life teachings and my Bible study takes me to a truth then I create a scene that expresses that truth.” In Piper in Crisis, Fox explores the issue of abuse through various characters, one that left an abusive partner, one that remains with an abusive partner, one that pays the ultimate prize and of course, Kim’s onetime encounter. Each tells something different about abuse. The reader is given a glimpse into some of the plot of book three, Piper Consolidated, with a small child, a love interest for Kim and possibly the resolution of some of the difficulties from Piper in Crisis, along with further development of many of

about your carrier

the characters we’ve come to care about. Piper in Crisis, as with book one, doesn’t use a sledge hammer to deliver its Christian message, in fact, Fox skillfully creates an image of God as another character in her book, providing conversations that not only hit the mark for Kim but give the reader a truth to ponder. Fox has carefully maintained the interest and intrigue of the first book, while introducing new story lines, characters and challenges. Piper in Crisis is available at Cariboo Keepsakes, from the author at piperscall@ hotmail.com, online at essencebookstore.com and other online retailers.

Especially during the winter months when it’s icy, cold, snowy and dark outside, think about the carrier who’s walking the streets to deliver your Observer News. Please take the time to clear a path to your door and leave on an outside light to enable your carrier to safely accomplish their task.

NCCS has grown from a staff of one and 14 students to current levels of 60 students and 11 staff. Contributed photo

The little school that could NCCS celebrates 20 years

From its humble beginnings in September 1994 with one teacher 14 students and a whole lot of faith, North Cariboo Christian School is celebrating a milestone. Twenty years later we are still growing strong supporting more than 60 students, employing a staff of 12 including a principal, administrator, teachers, support workers, a custodian and a bus driver and are located at 2876 Red Bluff Road. It is our vision at North Cariboo Christian School to inspire a generation of children who radiate the light of Jesus Christ. We endeavour to provide children with a quality education that has a biblical foundation which will enable them to know, love and effectively serve Jesus Christ in the world. We aim to empower students to reach their fullest individual potential, academically, spiritually and physically. We believe the Bible is the foundation for all truth and that building a strong foundation in children is about teaching them the wisdom and

character of God in all aspects of their lives. Teachers and staff are Christians dedicated to presenting education from a biblical perspective. We aim to put Christ first in the hearts of our children then to empower them with knowledge so they can serve others in the world around them. As an accredited interdenominational Christian School, we provide Ministry of

Education approved curriculum for Kindergarten to Grade 9 and are currently looking at piloting a high school program in collaboration with an online provider. Within the next five years, we aim to offer a fully classroombased graduation program. “We are extraordinarily excited about the future of this school.” board chair Angela

Zieske said. “This year marks our 20th year in this community and to celebrate we are hosting a three day open house event, Jan. 29 – 31, with guest speakers, dynamic workshops and a community luncheon event. We are inviting people to come and see the difference faith makes to a child’s educational experience!” The North Cariboo

Christian School is governed by a board of elected parents who operate under the authority of the Quesnel Interdenominational Christian School Society. We are accepting applications for all grades (K-9) for the 2014-2015 school year and welcome all interested families to come in for a tour of our facilities. – submitted by Angela Zieske Obituary Tribute

Show your heart at the 48th Annual Show of Hearts Telethon On Jan. 25 – 26, British Columbians will have the chance to show their hearts to children who have special needs. Variety – The Children’s Charity returns to the air on Global BC with the 48th annual Show of Hearts Telethon, its biggest fundraising event. Last year generous donors helped Variety raise more than $7 million. For anyone who grew up in British Columbia, Variety’s Show of Hearts Telethon is a yearly celebration of the positive and far-reaching impact donors have on families with children who have special needs. “The telethon is our signature fundraiser,” Bernice Scholten, Executive Director of Variety said.

“Once a year, we ask viewers to invite us into their living rooms to see firsthand the impact their donations make and ask them to support children who have special needs. “Variety is about families supporting families and there’s nothing more powerful than that.” As with every Variety’s fundraising campaign, all funds raised at Variety and the Show of Hearts Telethon stay in British Columbia. In 2013, Variety provided grants to 1,277 families and also to 32 organizations offering specialized programs and services to children who have special needs. The funding paid for things like new equipment in hospital neonatal intensive

Ex-Thunder player makes noise in BCMML JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter

Jesse Roach as a Cariboo Cougar.

Contributed photo

After a successful year playing with the Cariboo Cougars, former Quesnel Thunder player, Jesse Roach has been named to the B.C. Major-Midget all star game, Jan. 17 in Langley. "It's pretty exciting," Roach said. "All the players are good players." The tournament pits two teams, made up of the top 42 players drawn from the best of the B.C. Major Midget league, against each other to showcase the talent in the league. The teams are decided by chance and as such, Roach, who will play for team blue, will have to

play against team mates Bryan Allbee and Steven Jandric, who were also chosen to play in the game but were put on team white. Roach, who is a rookie in the league, has had his eye on the tournament since he started with the Cougars. "It was a goal I set at the start of the league," he said. The game promises to be a great experience for Roach, who will have new team mates and new coaches to learn from. Though he hasn't played alongside any of his temporary team mates, he said he knows the players from playing against them and is confident the team will gel quickly once they start playing together.

"I just want to enjoy the experience and see what happens," said Roach. His first year with the league, Roach hit the ice at full speed. He said his efforts trying out for the WHL's Vancouver Giants helped him prepare for the season. His time with the Cougars had been good for him. "I fell like I've got my game up to another level," he said. With experience from the all star game and his time with the Cariboo Cougars, Roach has set his sights on the Vancouver Giants once again, hoping to make it into the WHL and one step closer to the big leagues.

Roach leads the Cariboo Cougars in scoring, with 37 points from 15 goals and 22 assists. Those numbers are also good enough to sit him, quite comfortably, in the league’s top ten, slotting in at seventh. The 6’4”, 191 lb forward also has his fair share of penalty minutes, at 42. Roach was named player of the month for the Cougars for December and was runner up BCMML player of the month. The Cariboo Cougars currently sit seventh in the league, with a record of 11-15-2. Roach is back in action with the Cougars Jan. 25 in Prince George, playing the Kamloops Blazers.

Aiming for the top

Quesnel skiers took aim at the top positions in the biathlete BC Cup last weekend, and their aim was true. The Cariboo Ski Touring Club sent seven skiers south to Whistler to take part in the weekend competition, Jan. 11-12. Saturday skiers took part in the sprint race, with the mass start taking place on the Sunday. Whistler received 50 cm of snow on Friday night, and another

“Slip” on in here for Homemade soups, breads and buns. Try our home cut fries, pizza or our famous Donair

25 cm on Saturday, making it impossible for the groomers to keep up. The athletes had to plow through several inches of deep snow, which made skiing difficult, reducing both speed and visibility. The high winds and persistent snow fall, continued to challenge the athletes with their shooting. BC Cup #2 is scheduled for February 1 and 2, in Prince George.

A huge dump of snow, a big breakfast, a band of fiddlers and crowds of people made the annual Hallis Lake Open house a resounding success last Sunday. Though the groomer struggled to keep up with the snow and the rental shop to keep up with all the new skiers, the conditions and temperature were perfect and if you weren’t skiing there was food and, early on in the day, music inside. Even complete neophytes could join in on the fun, as lessons were as free as the passes and the rentals, which is to say it all cost a very reasonable (some might actually say unreasonable) $0. Clockwise from top left: the rental shop doing a brisk business; learning means falling, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun; if there were two things there were plenty of it was snow and people (and breakfast, lots of breakfast); the fiddler strike up a jaunty reel. Next up, the Loppet, Jan. 25. See PAGE A20 for more photos Jonas Gagnon and contributed photos

2014 Infiniti Q50 challenges the old order Infiniti has had a bit of an identity crisis over the past year with a wholesale change in the way it names its products. Gone is the JX crossover, it’s called the QX60 now and the G 37 sedan has been replaced with the Q50 sedan. Q signifies for cars and QX for crossovers or SUVs. The outgoing G37 was already a very worthy on-road performer but a bit too simplistic in the inside. Now, Infiniti has taken things up a notch with the Q50, adding a dynamic look, sumptuous interior and class leading technology. Looks It could be argued that the current BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class are a bit conservative, while this Q50 and the major competitor, Lexus IS, are much edgier. This is especially true with the front grille. The rest of the Q50 is nicely sculpted, with flowing lines and an almost elegant rear end. Sold as a base model, sport trim, all wheel drive (AWD), premium, and even a hybrid, there is a broad market for this sedan. Starting at $37,500 and ramping up to the AWD sport model at $49,950, there is a substantial discount with the Q50 when you compare it to a similarly equipped BMW. The base model comes with 17-inch wheels but most of the higher trim levels are equipped with 19-inch wheels. The car seen here is the AWD premium model starting at $43,400. Five fun coupes for singles ‘‘

Many singles I know decide to get something a little less “practical” in the grand scheme of things.

’’

Alexandra Straub

So, you’re not married. That’s okay! You don’t have kids? No worries. You pretty much have the pick of the litter when it comes to buying a car. Why? Because you don’t necessarily have specific requirements that need to be met when selecting a vehicle. Meaning, you don’t

Dodge Challenger. need to consider having a large enough backseat to fit car seats, unless you want a big back seat for other reasons. Like, you have a dog that weighs as much as an adult. Or you don’t need four doors because you’re pretty much the only one

going to be inside the cabin at any given time. Unless your profession requires you to haul around equipment or gear, you don’t have to buy a crossover, minivan, sedan or SUV if you don’t want to. That said, many singles I

Volkswagen Golf

know decide to get something a little less “practical” in the grand scheme of things. Less practicality is usually spelled with five letters: coupe. So, to those individuals who are the alpha of their one-person wolf pack, here are a few coupes under $30K to consider. Honda Accord Coupe: Base MSRP $26,400 I’m starting off with the Accord because it’s a cool car. The current generation has so much going for it and definitely has developed more personality in the redesign. You have the option of two engines: a more economical 2.4L 4-cylinder or a more powerful 3.5L V6. Either way, you can get them equipped with a 6-speed manual or a CVT transmission. Only the EX-L Navi trim with the V6 has the option of a 6-speed

automatic transmission. No matter how you slice it, you’re getting a great car. Better yet, it has a decent cargo capacity of 379L so you could easily dump your hockey gear inside. The interior is spacious and comfortable, and heck, it looks good. MINI Coupe/Roadster: Base MSRP $25,950/$28,900 With room for two, even the base model of MINI Coupe or Roadster is a hoot. Specs-wise, it has the least impressive engine of the lot (only putting out 121 horsepower,) but that can be overlooked because of via driving dynamics. It has one of the best manual gearboxes for a car of its size and has an abundance of pep. They’re not cheap, though. So it has that working against it in some regards. And you could argue that

a Mazda MX-5 is a better value (you won’t be wrong) but it’s still loads of fun. Dodge Challenger: Base MSRP $26,995 If you’re driving a Dodge Challenger, you’re getting noticed. You don’t even need to have the grunt and roar of the SRT’s 6.4L V8 HEMI to turn heads. Inside and out, this two-door has style and power. The base SXT trim comes equipped with a 3.6L V6 and 305 horsepower. Kia Forte Koup: Base MSRP $20,550 For just over $20K, the Kia Forte Koup is a solid value. And it’s not a bad looking car either. Inside, the interior is well finished and isn’t cheap. Furthermore, you have many great standard amenities that come with the base model like 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights,

Chevrolet Cruze 2011 to 2013: A winner with drivers world wide ‘‘

Big on space, safety and performance, Cruze is probably the best compact car ever made by Chevrolet.

’’

Bob McHugh

The Chevrolet Cruze was already a winner in Europe and Asia, before it cruised

into Canada for the 2011 model year. Cruze continued its winning ways by adding the prestigious 2011 Canadian Car of the Year Award, presented by the Automobile Journalist's Association of Canada (AJAC) to its trophy cabinet. The base LS edition of Cruze comes with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine and the Eco, LT and LTZ editions come with a Ecotec 1.4-litre turbocharged-four that delivers more power at low engine speeds, yet provides similar fuel economy. The transmission choice offered was either a six-speed manual or a six-speed

automatic. Clever aero tweaks, including active front grille shutters, help the Cruze Eco slice through air on low rolling-resistance tires. Weight saving initiatives (right down to the size and location of body welds) also trim 97 kg (214 lbs.) from its total body mass. A taller sixth overdrive gear allows additional highway fuel savings and an impressive official FE rating of 7.8/5.4 L/100 km (city/highway) with the manual transmission. Cruze has one of the roomiest cabins in the compact class. There’s also excel-

lent fore-aft travel on the driver’s seat plus generous head room, making is a small car for big people. Adding to driver comfort, the steering wheel has both a tilt and telescopic feature, in all models. The trunk in a Cruze is also one of the largest in class and only slightly smaller than the VW Jetta. Top-notch safety features include 10 standard airbags, instead of the usual six fitted in its compact competitors. The extra occupant protection comes in the form of knee-airbags for the front passengers and side-impact airbags for the

rear outboard passengers. The head curtain air bags in Cruze also provide rollover protection. A disturbingly high number of safety recalls (see list), however, might make one wonder about overall Cruze quality and safety. Cruze continued largely unchanged for the 2012 model year, other than adding touch-screen navigation and push-button start with keyless entry systems to the list of options available. An infotainment system, with Bluetooth streaming audio, was made standard on all continued on page B13

heated front seats, remote keyless entry, air conditioning and more. VW GTI: Base MSRP $29,375 The 3-door VW GTI is one of my favourite cars. The frontwheel, German engineered bundle of excitement has poise and pizzazz, along with a fabulous interior and a tried and tested engine. What’s great about the GTI is that it works for all ages. You could be 16 and driving it, or 60, and you’d still look good. You wouldn’t look out of place and people would give you nods of approval. Granted, the current generation is on its way out and the seventh generation (2014 model year) is coming soon. So if you want a killer deal on a 2013, now’s about as good of a time as any. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Off-road performance with on-road comforts ‘‘

It has the ability to drive down a gravel road or up to the ski hill but Nissan has made sure it is also as comfortable as a road car and as fuel-efficient as it can be.

’’

Ian Harwood

The 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid is on a quest, to get your family where you need to go on as little fuel as possible. Looks: One of the biggest changes last year was the switch from body-on-frame to a unibody construction. This reduced the overall weight, which makes a big difference on the fuel economy. The shape and design characteristics of this truck have changed, much smoother lines, and

more aerodynamic. I remember the first Pathfinder introduced in 1986 and aimed at capturing some of the Toyota 4runner buyers. It looked promising but never completely took off. I think the focus was more on the off-road when it should have been more on-road with the ability to travel off-road. This version has done this, taking design cues and comfort from the Nissan Rogue and creating a larger crossover capable of transporting seven. In The Cab: My tester was the Platinum edition. It came equipped with leather seats with 8 way power adjustability, 4 way power for the front passenger, EZ flex seating system with 2nd row 60/40 split fold-flat bench seat, and 3rd row 50/50 split fold flat reclining bench seat. The leather wrapped steering wheel is heated and is a nice feature. There is plenty of wood tone trim but it is not overdone, giving it a rich feel. Bose audio system with 13 speakers, AM/FM/CD, SiriusXM, auxiliary audio input jack, USB connection, streaming audio via Bluetooth, steering wheel

but the base LS model, in 2013. A blind spot warning system was also a new optional safety feature. Consumer Reports list the Cruze as a “Recommended” vehicle buy and show it as having an average repair history. It’s currently the best selling compact car in Canada, made by a domestic auto maker. Big on space, safety and performance, Cruze is probably the best compact car ever made by Chevrolet. Safety Recalls: 2011 to 2013 Chevrolet Cruze: 2011- The steering wheel may have been improperly fastened and could loosen and eventually separate. If the joint separates and a loss of steering function would result. Dealers will inspect and ensure that the bolt is fully seated and the shaft is properly assembled. 2011/2012 - Oil spilt during an oil change, or hydraulic fluid expelled from a clutch housing vent hole, could contact

It is larger but feels very similar and that’s a good thing. I think Nissan is heading

a hot engine shield and cause it to ignite and burn. Dealers will modify the engine shield to prevent fluid from contacting the shield. 2011/2012 - Welds may have been omitted from the fuel tank mounting brackets could allow fuel leakage to occur in the event of a severe side impact crash. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, secure the fuel tank brackets using fasteners. 2011/2012 – In vehicles equipped with the 1.4L turbo engine and automatic transmission, a supplemental electric vacuum pump may not function as designed. This could result in an intermittent reduction or loss of brake power assist and increase stopping distances.

in the right direction with this vehicle. If studies show limited use off-road, then why spend money making this an off-road vehicle? It has the ability to drive down a gravel road or up to the ski hill but Nissan has made sure it is also as comfortable as a road car and as fuel-efficient as it can be. Verdict: I think Nissan thought outside of the box on this one and was not afraid to start fresh and create something new. Sticker price: S $29,998 S 4WD $31,998 SV 4WD $35,248 SL $35,698 SL 4WD $37,698 SV Hybrid $39,248 Platinum Premium Hybrid $42,098 Price as tested $50,893 ian.harwood@drivewaybc. ca

Dealers will replace a micro-switch in the power brake vacuum pipe assembly. 2012 - The primary stage of the driver’s airbag may not deploy during a crash and increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Dealers will replace the steering wheel airbag coil. 2013 - In vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, the passenger side halfshaft may fracture and separate, which would result in a loss of motive power. Dealers will replace affected halfshafts. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Road hogs cause motoring mayhem on Texas autobahn Austin, Texas: Road hogs are a common sight at dusk here on the so-called Texas autobahn. I’m not talking about those crazy drivers transported by four-wheeled vehicles but those of the four-legged variety – boars! And just like the two-legged, lead-footed variety, the cloven-hoofed wild pigs cause crashes – four bad smashes on the first night that the high speed State Highway 130 toll road opened back in October 2012. Last week, I wrote about a drive on the no-speed limit autobahn from Munich to Berlin. The piece was prompted by the recent In terms of scenic Insights West/Black Press interest, it is as poll about increasing speed disappointing as a limits on highways in BC. I just had to try out the mild chilli pepper in a North American equivalent bowl of Tex-Mex. of the autobahn with its 85 mph limit (approximately Keith Morgan 137 km/h) and here are my observations. After driving a sporty Audi S6 on the toll highway from Austin on a day trip to San Antonio, I think there must have been more boars than cars on the route for long stretches. It was a lonely daytime drive in the S6 with very few cars passing in either direction. In terms of scenic interest, it is as disappointing as a mild chilli pepper in a bowl of TexMex. It’s not that the tolls are high on the 65-kilometre stretch I travelled on the 210-kilometre route – less than $10, under $30 for commercial trucks. It’s just that the 85 mph limit is just not fast enough to encourage people to use it for what is a fairly short distance between those two major centres. And that’s especially so, when the posted speed limit on the regular toll-free state highways was raised to 75 mph (120 km/h) shortly after the turnpike was opened. The main section is also well to the east of Austin so there was a trek before I could unleash the horses under the hood. It would help to hike the limit another 10 mph (16 km/h): It’s a very well-engineered road and I can’t see that causing carnage. At the risk of attracting the interest of a Texan posse bent on a hanging, I might suggest that a reduction of the limit in the same magnitude on the regular highways might dramatically increase custom along the way. The only positive I can say is that I maintained the top legal speed for the length of the trip, which, as I reported last week, was impossible on the congested no-speed limit autobahn between Munich and Berlin. The growing network of toll roads in central Texas may have the highest speed limits in the nation but unless they ultimately stretch to Houston and/or Corpus Christi on the Gulf coast, it’s hard to imagine the operators emerging from the billion-dollar financial quagmire. The Department of Transportation has ended a rebate that had allowed trucks to use the road for the same price as cars since last April. That disincentive is likely to increase the red ink. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Pic of the week Infiniti has revealed its Q50 Eau Rouge concept at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It’s a high-performance design concept based on Infiniti’s Q50 premium sports sedan, that draws inspiration for aerodynamic design from the technical collaboration between Infiniti and four-time Formula One World Champions Infiniti Red Bull Racing. Major bodywork components have been redesigned with aerodynamics in mind and manufactured carbon fibre. Q50 Eau Rouge is lower and wider – only the roof and door profiles remain unchanged from the production Q50. The Infiniti design team, led by Executive Design Director Alfonso

Albaisa, was influenced by the aerodynamic styling approach taken by their colleagues at Infiniti Red Bull Racing. “From our shared passion for performance with Infiniti Red Bull Racing grew a collective desire to produce a vision of what a

high-performance Infiniti Q50 could look like,” said Albaisa. “The design has a number of distinctive Formula One inspired touches. In particular, the sculpted front wing assembly and the rear aerodynamic packaging take their cues from the RB9 race car,” added

Albaisa. The Driveway team is at the show and will report on the highlights next week. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
