A birthday party was hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 24 Cranbrook, for one of Cranbrook’s more noted Aquarians. Bud Abbott’s birthday actually falls on January 26, but the Legion chose today, “Seniors Day” — third Wednesday of the month — to mark the occasion and to honour Bud’s labour of love of leading the Seniors sing-a-long. From all of us, Bud, happy birthday, in advance.

The young woman who hosted a gathering in April 2012 after which Cory Jarock died testified in court on Thursday, Jan. 16. Caitlin Jensen, 21, said she invited a few friends over to “hang out” on April 2, 2012. One of those friends was Brian Panebianco, and another was Cory Jarock; the two men had not met before that night. Panebianco is on trial this week in Cranbrook Supreme Court for the manslaughter of Jarock, who died of hypothermia after the April 2 party. While she could not provide a specific timeline, Jensen said that everybody else was already there when Jarock arrived in the late evening with 15 beers. The group shared the beers, Jensen said. When the beers were all gone, Jensen found a key to her father’s locked bedroom and found a bottle of vodka, which she gave to her friends. Some time later, Jensen was in her bedroom when her friend Emma Cain came in to tell her that Jarock was passing out. Jensen said she and Cain then went into the living room and asked Jarock to leave. Defense counsel Greg Sawchuk later asked Jensen if they
first asked for Panebianco’s help in getting Jarock to leave, but Jensen insisted they didn’t. Jarock did not leave when the women asked him to, instead swearing at them and grabbing Cain’s backside, Jensen testified. Panebianco then approached Jarock, Jensen continued, grabbed him by the throat, punched him in the face and dragged him out of the house. Panebianco came back inside, grabbed Jarock’s jacket and shoes, and put them outside with Jarock. Jensen also testified that Panebianco came back inside with money he said he’d taken from Jarock. The three sat in the living room for about half an hour, and they could hear Jarock speaking outside. Then Panebianco left, and Jensen said that he prodded Jarock with a stick on his way past. About 15 minutes later Cain left, and Jensen locked the door, turned off the lights and went to bed. When asked by prosecutor Lynal Doerksen why she did not call police, Jensen said she figured Jarock would wake up and walk home.

Cranbrook looks at Elizabeth Lake-Prestige connector Arne Petryshen
Cranbrook city council discussed the possibility of a walking
path or sidewalk to continue the trail between the Prestige Inn and Elizabeth Lake.
The correspondence letters were brought up during the Jan. 6 city council meeting.
In the letter, Elizabeth Lake Lodge attributes some of its summer guests’ shorter stays to the fragmentation of the trails. George Freitag, from Elizabeth
Lake Lodge, notes that better connections between the trails and signage would help, as would a sidewalk that connects the Prestige to Elizabeth Lake.

In his response, Mayor Wayne Stetski said the Highway 3/95 Revitalization Committee has identified a connecting trail between the Prestige Inn and Elizabeth Lake as a priority. City staff recommended that Council receive the email correspondence from Dec. 18, 2013 regarding the trail connector and refer it to the Highway 3/95 Revitalization Committee, which is what council did. In his letter, Stetski also advises that council should discuss it as part of upcoming budget meetings. “In order to improve Cranbrook I guess both from a tourism perspective and a hotel perspective and a resident perspective, we should be extending a trail or a sidewalk,” Stetski said. “In essence it would go from downtown to Elizabeth Lake.” He said there is already a trail that goes as far as the Prestige
Inn, but there is nothing from there that leads a pedestrian safely off highway to Elizabeth Lake. The motion was to refer to the Highway 3/95 Revitalization Committee. Coun. Sharon Cross asked whether the city should also talk to ICBC and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure about a safety audit of the area. Stetski said that the ministry is represented on the highway committee. Coun. Denise Pallesen is also on the committee. “Maybe we can get some dollars to do a sidewalk, which would be nice because there’s nothing there now,” Pallesen said. Stetski said from his perspective it doesn’t have to be a sidewalk necessarily, but could be “a well done gravel or hard surface trail; anything you could travel alongside the highway safely.”

RCMP arrested three people for drug trafficking during a road check on Cranbrook Street on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Cpl. Chris Newel of
the Kimberley RCMP said police set up a road check after receiving a tip from the public about individuals involved in drug trafficking. Newel said the
check had been going for over five hours when the suspect vehicle approached. “A search of the vehicle located cocaine, heroin and crystal meth,
along with drug paraphernalia,” Newel said. “Two males and one female were arrested and taken into custody.” The 23-year-old female and the two males,
Province discusses highway speeds at Cranbrook forum Arne Petryshen Townsman Staff
The province is hoping to gauge motorists’ feelings on whether rural highways have adequate speed limits in B.C. So on Jan. 14, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, along with ICBC, met with residents of Cranbrook as part of an open house tour to collect input on the Rural Highway Safety and Speed Review. Representatives from the two provincial bodies were touring Kamloops, Kelowna, Prince George, Dawson Creek, Vancouver, Cranbrook, Nanaimo and Chilliwack as part of the information gathering effort. Mike Lorimer, regional director for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, said they have received some good feedback so far, especially online. “Over 6,000 people have visited the website and we’ve had over 800 surveys completed online,” Lorimer said. He said there hasn’t been a consensus in the surveys for what changes should be pursued, if any, with regards to speed limits. “What we’re trying to do is get the right speed,” he said. “I think when they see that we’re taking the public input and matching it with the technical review that we’re doing, so there is a technical basis to it as well. I think it has helped to reassure folks that we are here to talk to people and to at the end of the day get the right
speed.” He said they are hearing that generally the speed limits are in the right area, with some people saying that in places they need to be higher and other places lower. The open houses began at the start of December and will run until Jan. 16. Feedback can also be submitted online through gov.bc.ca/safetyandspeedreview until Jan. 24 and other avenues such as social media. The government is looking for public input in various aspects of highway safety, such as speed limits, slower moving vehicles, wildlife hazards and use of winter tires. The ministry is also undertaking technical work as a part of the review which will look at research from other jurisdictions and evaluate specific characteristics of highways in B.C. such as travel speed, safety history and the volume and mix of traffic. Lorimer said they have to take into account wildlife, winter conditions and traffic.
“Is there a section of highway that has a lot of commercial vehicles? Because if it does there is no point in raising the speed limit.” He said people seem to be wanting to see small adjustments rather than big changes – things like a 10 km/h increase or decrease rather than a jump to 130 km/h highways. The last time a review was done was 2003. That report identified some areas where speed limits could be raised and others where they could be lowered. The report provides information on our local rural highways as well. For instance, an average of 3,000 cars per day drive the 112 kilometre section between Cranbrook and Creston and 1.68 animals are killed per kilometre annually. The traffic is 19 per cent trucks. The 146 kilometre section from Cranbrook to the Alberta border has 4,500 cars travel it on average per day and 1.86 animals are killed per kilometre annually. The traffic is 16 per cent trucks.

The lifeforce moves through Lopez’s guitar World Beat guitarist plays Key City Theatre Saturday, Jan. 25. B a r ry Co u lt e r
February, 2014, will be an important month in the career of renowned guitarist Oscar Lopez, who is playing Cranbrook next week, Saturday, Jan. 25. In a few weeks, he will be releasing his 12th album, “Apasionado” (Passionate). “It’s a new album that I’m doing, it’s almost done. I’m very happy with it,” Lopez told the Townsman, shortly before setting out on a “mini-tour” of Calgary, Cranbrook and Penticton. “I’m very proud of it — it’s something I’ve done on my own. For so many years, I was recording with a record company … but now I’ve returned as an independent.” “Apasionado” was recorded in Penticton. “I was waiting for when the time would be right (to record this solo project), and it happened to be when I was in Penticton. I have a friend there who has a studio in his basement, and I was very comfortable there. No pressure. Most of the songs were

born in that studio. “Sometimes you fight with the creation process, and you have no idea what’s going to happen — you don’t know what direction you want to take. But it happens. The right time came along.” One of Canada’s greatest guitarists, Oscar Lopez will be performing at the Key City Theatre on January 25 at 7:30 p.m. Known for his intimate live performances, Oscar offers a unique flavour of Latin music that incorporates a mix of jazz, blues and pop. On the new album, Lopez composed and arranged all the songs but one, which was jointly written with a friend and keyboard player who also appears on the record. “I promised myself I wasn’t going to put any pressure on me,” he said of the recording process this time around. “You always have to have a deadline, no doubt about it, but I said to myself, ‘Don’t push yourself,’ do it for the right reasons. Don’t do it because people

Oscar Lopez want you to put an album out, or because you want to submit it to the Junos — just do it. When the time is right, it will happen organically. That’s what’s happening right now.” Lopez said he will showcase a few songs from the new album at his Cranbrook concert. “I think it’s one of the best things I’ve done,” he said of “Apasionado.”
I feel there’s a different direction that’s happening. It’s still me, it’s still Oscar Lopez, but the music is really cool. Lopez was born and grew up in Chile, where he took up music at an early age. In 1979, at age 25 he moved to Canada, where he launched his professional career. He recorded his first album in 1989. He has been
nominated for Juno Awards numerous times, and won twice. “Apasionado” will be his 12th album. Lopez is often categorized as “New Flamenco,” but Lopez rejects that term as it concerns himself. “There’s not much to say. I don’t know why they apply this term to me. Flamenco’s a very disciplined style. I don’t
think what I play is Flamenco, not even close. I would call it more ‘World Beat.’ New Flamenco became a term for record companies to use to put the music in a box. ‘New Flamenco’ is just a word they created, not like ‘Flamenco,’ which has been around for generations. “But you can call my music whatever you want to call it. Just enjoy it, have a good time.” Music is more than just a profession to Lopez. “It’s me,” he said. “It’s my personality, my passion, my emotions, my sensitivity, my imperfections — my life. It has less to do with my musical technique, and more to do with who I am. “The way I project the music I play for you, for everybody who wants to listen, it’s part of me. It’s who I am. That’s the way I am on the stage or off the stage — with transparency, compassion and honesty. I just play it the way I feel it. It could sound different the next time I play.” In the same way, his guitar — named Rosalita — is more than just an instrument. Is Lopez a master of the guitar, or is the guitar master of Lopez? “The guitar is my inner voice,” he says. “It’s a tool of expression, a tool of compassion, it’s a tool that can teach me. It can open the door for me to learn a new language, a new system. It’s been a tool to meet my wife, my
friends, many, many musicians in the world. It’s been a tool to travel. That’s what the guitar has done for me. It keeps doing it for me — opening doors.” Lopez didn’t record or tour for a few years, due to a battle with depression. It was the guitar and music which brought him back, he said. “The most important thing it’s done for me — it’s been the best, the absolute therapy in the world for me. I’ve paid the price, I’ve been there, done that. Music brought me back. “(Without music) I’d be a guy with a gun, shooting somewhere in South America. But I’m here, playing music. I am because of my music, my guitar, which helped me so much. “Once, I even took it for granted. I didn’t want to do it anymore. I was doing it mechanically, I wasn’t doing it from my heart. And the guitar taught me a lesson — it said, ‘Don’t ever do that again, because you’re the one who made me speak. If you’re going to speak mechanically, don’t do it.’ “A guitar is a living thing, with its own personality, soul and character.” Oscar Lopez will demonstrate the lifeforce in his guitar at the Key City Theatre, Saturday, Jan. 25. Tickets are $35 ($30 for members) and are available at the Key City Theatre box office or charge by phone at 250-426-7006.
Trial hears from witness Continued from page 1 “I really thought he would just get up and leave. I didn’t think it would turn into this,” she said. The next morning when Jensen woke up at about 8 a.m., she saw that Jarock was still outside her house, lying in the driveway. She began to call and text friends about it. Late in the morning she took two photos of Jarock from her porch and texted them to friends, saying, “Drunk guy
passed out on my driveway. LOL.” Jensen said she was certain that she saw Jarock move between the first and second times she looked at him on the morning of April 3. “I was stupid and I didn’t use my brain and I am in the wrong for that,” she said. A local realtor called 911 at about 1 p.m. on April 3 when he drove down the street and saw Jarock face down on the driveway.
The jury also heard about a time about six months prior to that fateful April night when Jarock was also drinking at Jensen’s house. Chase Stadnyk testified that he was with the pair on October 26, 2011. Jarock was drunk and wouldn’t leave, he said. When Jarock went outside to smoke a cigarette, Stadnyk and Jensen locked the door behind him. But Jarock stayed on a bench outside, and after two
hours Stadnyk called police. Jensen said that Jarock was angry that the police were called because he received a fine for being drunk and disorderly. Also, Jensen said, her father warned her after that incident that if the police were called to their house again then she would be kicked out of the home. The trial of Brian Panebianco continues in Cranbrook Supreme Court until Jan. 24.

Annie Laurie and the What’s Up? Cranbrook Citizen’s League KIMBERLEY AND CRANBROOK COMMUNITY CALENDAR
UPCOMING
JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now
Jim Cameron Annie Laurie died on August 16, 1950, at the age of 82. Her death certificate states her trade as “housewife.” Understatement. Still, having raised 10 children with her husband John it would certainly be an accurate addition to her list of accomplishments. Annie Laurie — nee Acaster, of Sheffield, England, born Jan. 14, 1868 — struck a mighty blow in the battle for women’s emancipation in the city of Cranbrook. In January 1921, age 53, she attended a ceremony at City Hall to be sworn in as the first woman councillor in the history of our town. In fact, it is safe to say, she was among the first female city councillors in the history of our province, indeed, of Canada. The first (in any level of government) was Hannah Gale, who was elected to Calgary City Council in 1917. That same year, two women, Annie Laurie and Mrs. McKowan, placed their names on the ballot for election to the threeman Cranbrook School Board. Neither lady was elected, placing fourth and fifth respectively in a field of six with Annie missing by 33 votes and Mrs. McKowan by 56. Considering the small voting list at the time it was somewhat more than a narrow margin but certainly an indication that many voters were prepared to accept a co-ed council. Although Cranbrook city councils of the day were not necessarily “old boys’ clubs,” they were certainly the exclusive enclave of male movers and shakers. Conversely, the women’s suffrage movement, ongoing for many years in Canada, had taken a large step forward during the First World War and many women felt it was not only their right to vote in provincial and federal elections but further that they should have an equal say in decision-making in municipal matters. The right to vote in Cranbrook municipal elections was given to female city property owners at the time of the city’s incorporation in 1905, and a fair number of ladies accord-

Laurie Jr. Secondary School shortly after completion in 1962. ingly exercised their right, year after year. Still, until 1917 no woman had attempted to run for civic office. In December 1920, a group of women met at City Hall to discuss local municipal affairs and problems, and further to consider the possibility of placing female candidates in the upcoming civic election (at that time held in early January). The women-only meeting was well-attended and resulted in the formation of the “Cranbrook Citizen’s League,” much to the bemusement of the local menfolk. Mrs. Constantine, president of the local Women’s Institute, delivered a short message and then introduced Mrs. Grevett of Calgary (presumably Mrs. F.W. Grevett who was very active in women’s affairs in that city). She gave an interesting and informative, if not eye-opening, talk on what was expected of women in municipal matters, advising the group
to choose the strongest possible candidates and offer them every support. The Citizen’s League solidified their assembly by electing Mrs. Idella Baxter, president (mother of Muriel Baxter, for whom a local school would later be named); Sarah Shankland, secretary; and Mrs. J. H. McQuaid, treasurer. The local women’s movement was now an organized reality. The group met again the following week in the Methodist Church schoolroom – this time joined by a number of men – and once again took up matters of civic affairs, focusing on local problems and the perceived short-comings of the local police commission (crime being of some issue in the community at the time), consisting of two commissioners elected by the populace. It was decided to place a woman candidate for alderman and another as school board trustee. Although consideration was given to the
Letters to the Editor
possibility of a candidate for the police commission the Citizen’s League decided against it. A nomination committee was formed and the names of Mrs. Annie Laurie (alderman) and Mrs. Helen Jackson (school board) were officially placed on the upcoming voter’s list. The election took place on Jan. 13, 1921. The city council outcome was, in some ways, a moot point. The ballot required the election of one mayor and six aldermen, precisely the number listed on the ballot and thus the entire council was elected by acclamation (a common occurrence in those days). Mrs. Jackson placed second in voting out of a field of four (three of whom were required) and thus became the first woman to hold the office of Cranbrook School Trustee. Annie Laurie attended her first meeting at City Hall on Monday, Jan. 17. Apparently the first order of business was to decide if the male councillors might continue to enjoy their cigars during their meetings while a lady was in attendance. Councillor Laurie (tactfully) broached no objections. Formation of civic committees followed and Annie found a place on the Health and Relief, Water and Sewerage boards. Mrs. Laurie was not re-elected in the municipal race the following year, losing to George Moir by a mere 10 votes. Although it was to be many years before another woman would grace City Council, the women of the Citizen’s League, headed by Mrs. Laurie and Jackson, made their mark and laid the groundwork for the ladies who followed. Annie, her husband John and their children — Robert, Charles, Ralph, William, Edward, Walter, Bruce, Annie, Ernest (John) and Herbert, each born two years apart and raised in the family home at 203–4th Avenue — contributed a great deal to local civic and business affairs over the years. The local Laurie legacy continues to this day under the banner of Laurie Middle School, opened in 1962, built on land previously owned by Janet Laurie, daughter-inlaw of John and Annie and named, not just in honour of Annie, but for the entire family. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

The hard, critical work of reconciliation
O
ne of those whose writings I enjoyed was a Baptist preacher named Will Campbell. He died last June. He was a renegade who joined the civil rights struggle in the 1950s, long before it was a popular thing to do. Often, he was the only white face at the beginning of that very important movement. He characterized his approach to his vocation this way: “My parish is kind of scattered all over the country. I’m strictly a bootleg preacher.” Most of his scattered congregation were poor whites and blacks, plain people alienated from mainstream Christianity and wary of institutions, churches and governments that talked about progress, but achieved little. They called him Brother Will. Part of the reason I’m such a fan of his was that from beginning to end, he held that the heart of Christian faith is the message that in Christ, we are reconciled. He was inspired by 2 Corinthians 5, where Paul writes that God “has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.” That sums up everything Brother Will said and did. Simply, he said, “be reconciled, with everyone. More precisely, recognize that you are, in Christ, already reconciled to every human being. The goal, then, is simply to be what you are, a reconciled person.” For Campbell, that reality is understood in three steps. First, reconciliation is a new social reality that has been created by Christ. The life of reconciliation is the deep reality in
our world. This was why Jesus came: to reconcile us to God and to one another. Second, we recognize that this reality erases all other human categories and boundaries. It doesn’t matter whether you are saint or sinner, criminal or law abiding. It doesn’t matter whether you are NDP or Liberal or Conservative. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, male or female. It doesn’t matter whether you are gay or straight, white or black or Rev. Yme native, male or feWoensdregt male. It doesn’t matter whether you are religious or irreligious. Because of the reconciling work of Christ, these boundaries simply no longer exist. The third step is that we are called to enact this new social reality. We are called to live as if these social boundaries do not exist. We no longer regard anyone from a “worldly point of view.” We live reconciled to everyone. Simple as that. The practical upshot of the ministry of reconciliation according to Brother Will is that we don’t have to really do much of anything to be a Christian. We simply have to live as people who have been reconciled. It’s a breathtaking vision of life. He summarized it once this way, “Do? Nothing! Be? What you are — reconciled to God and other human beings.” Do nothing. Be reconciled. Simple as that. A biography of Brother Will written by Thomas Connelly shares an observation Campbell once made where he describes the incomprehension he would face giv-
ing lectures about reconciliation on college campuses: “Somebody always wound up saying to me, ‘Reverend Campbell, what are the practical implications of your message? What are you saying to us? It sounds as if you are preaching that we should do nothing.’” Campbell smiled. “When I hear that, then I know I am getting through to them. That’s when I say “Now you are finally getting the message. Do nothing. Just be something. That is the whole message of being a real Christian anyway. Just be what you say you are—a Christian.” It’s a simple vision, but it’s far from being simplistic. Campbell knew that it would be hard work. That way of living is going to cost us something. Brother Will faced enmity for his participation in the Civil Rights movement. People hated him, called him names, beat him up. It’s much the same kind of belief Nelson Mandela expressed when he said, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” That work of learning to love, especially those who are different than us, is what makes life rich and whole and good. That was Brother Will’s work: “I believe in Jesus. Through Jesus we have all been reconciled to each other. So if we accept this gift, we’re free. There ain’t no need to hate anyone! Getting the word around about that—that’s my business.” Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Ice head into the Prairies for brief road trip TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
It may not be home, but it’s close enough for Tyler King and Troy Murray. The Kootenay Ice are heading into Saskatchewan where they will take on the Regina Pats on Friday evening and the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday. White City, Murray’s hometown, is a mere 10 minute drive outside of the Saskatchewan capital, while Pilot Butte, where King grew up, is also a short drive away. Murray, who recently returned from the World U17 Hockey Challenge in Nova Scotia over the Christmas break, wore international colours for the first time in his hockey career, representing Team West. Always in tough at the tournament, Team West didn’t fare too well, collecting only one win in four games to finish in ninth place. Murray was a part of the lone victory, scoring in a shootout to upset Sweden, the tournament’s defending champion in a 3-2 decision. “It was a really good experience,” said Murray. “I thought I played hard and I think we could’ve won a few more games, some bounces didn’t go our way, but I thought we did pretty good. “It’s always special wearing the Canadian crest on your jer-

King is in a similar situation, making a rare trip into Saskatchewan after switching conferences when he got traded to the Ice from the Spokane
Chiefs. “It’ll be exciting,” said King. “I grew up 15 minutes outside of Regina, so it’s always a fun game to go back to. “Being in the U.S. Division, I only got to play there once, so it’ll be exciting.” There will be a local connection when the Ice face the Pats, as Regina picked up Kimberley native Isaac Schacher from the Victoria Royals prior to the WHL trade deadline. The Pats picked up a few more players at the deadline,
snapping up goaltender Daniel Wapple and Logan McVeigh from the Tigers. Regina (23-17-3-2) has won three in a row and currently occupies fifth place in the Eastern Conference, only three points ahead of the Ice (22-202-2), which are in seventh. Over the last three games, Kootenay surrendered an early lead and lost to Lethbridge, survived the Oil Kings to earn a point in a shootout and also collected a win against the same team in a rematch. “We’ve been kind of up and down, but I think the last game we got back on track of how we wanted to play,” said King. “We got Sam back and a couple guys back to help us get back on the right game and what we have to do to be successful.” Following Regina’s game, the Ice will head over to Swift Current and challenge the Broncos. Swift Current has Julius Honka, a member of the gold-winning Finnish team at the World Juniors, back in the lineup, who made an appearance in Wednesday’s CHL Top Prospects game along with teammate and fellow defenceman Brycen Martin. The Broncos (23-16-1-5), which lead the East Division, sit in second place in the Eastern Conference, with the Hitmen ahead by a wide margin.
Avalanche volleyball teams hosting UFV TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
Volleyball action is taking over the College of the Rockies this weekend, as the Avalanche program hosts the visiting University of the Fraser Valley Cascades. It’s the second set of home dates in a schedule of three consecutive weekends of hosting opponents out of the Pacwest league. Both Avalanche teams are coming off wins against their previous opponents—the Columbia Bible College Bearcats—in volleyball matches last weekend. It was an especially important win for the ladies, which picked up their first victory of the season in a come-frombehind effort after going down two sets early in the match. “I think we played a
lot better on defence,” said team veteran Allison Pepper. “Our defence stepped it up a lot and we had some pretty good blocking—closing the block and getting there, setting the block. “Also, our serve-receive was on fire. You can’t run an offence without serve receive, and we were doing a really good job of that.” The ladies will be in tough this weekend, facing the Cascades which are ranked fifth in the country in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association standings. In the Pacwest league, UFV sits in second place with 12 wins and two losses. “They’re very clean, they don’t really make a lot of mistakes,” said Pepper, as the Avs faced them earlier in the autumn semester down in Abbotsford. “They kind
of play it out until you make a mistake. “Pretty much what we need to do is clean up our defence and make sure that our passes are on point so we can attack at them and make them make the mistakes.” It’s a big weekend for the men’s team as well, which will have a chance to secure a playoff spot. The men’s UFV squad sits in the bottom of the Pacwest standings, but have the same record as the Avalanche. Two wins will make a big difference in the standings, according to head coach Steve Kamps. “It’s probably the most important weekend of our season—the team we’re tied with for the final playoff spot right now,” said Kamps. “It’s basically an
eight-point weekend for us. If we can beat them twice, it puts us up in the standings and puts them down and out of a playoff spot, so it’s a huge weekend for us, for sure.” It’s a point underscored by Avs libero Scott Bedell. “This is definitely our most important weekend so far,” said Bedell. “As of right now, I’m pretty sure we’re both tied for sixth, so this weekend, if we can take both games off them, it’ll give us a huge lead over them and we know we’re capable of beating the other teams. “We got to put them in the basement and keep them there for the rest of the season.” The Avs split their record in the fall, with a win and a loss, both at set scores of 3-1. “They’re a real
scrappy team,” said Kamps. “They just don’t go away. They’re coming at you, they dig a lot of balls, got some guys who can put the ball away and a pretty good serving team as well. “We definitely need to be on our game.” Volleyball action kicks off on Friday night at 6 p.m. for the women, 8 p.m. for the men. On Saturday, matches start at 1 p.m. for the ladies and 3 p.m. for the men.

Dueck places second at World Cup race TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
After frustrating results in downhill and giant slalom, Kimberley sit-skier Josh Dueck earned a second place finish in the super-G race at the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup event in Panorama this week.
“It wasn’t a great run, but it was a tough course for everybody, and so to finish second on the last day of the race series is rad.” Josh Dueck Dueck did not finish in the downhill and giant slalom races, but finished 1:16:29 in the super-G, good enough for a podium finish on a course that got the best of many experienced skiers. “Today is definitely a silver lining in a bit of a slow week for me, for sure,” said Dueck. “There have been a lot of factors in play this week and unfortunately, some got in my head. But I can learn from that
and that was the goal today. Mentally, I wanted to let things just pass through, and obviously, it worked out. “It wasn’t a great run, but it was a tough course for everybody, and so to finish second on the last day of the race series is rad.” Dueck captured a silver medal at the Vancouver 2010 Paralympics and generated widespread media buzz in 2012, becoming the first sit-skier to complete a backflip. Dueck will be heading to more World Cup races in Colorado next week, and is hoping to keep the momentum going from his results in Panorama. “The confidence and momentum is building and it’s a really positive space to be in, so to be rewarded for it feels really good,” Dueck said. “Sometimes you forget how much you enjoy doing well until you have a few races in a row where you don’t and you get a little bit down on it. But today is great. “I took fewer chances than maybe I would’ve liked to, but at the same time, I did what I needed to do and carried my speed well.”
MLB OKs expanded instant replay starting this season
PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. - Major League Baseball will greatly expand instant replay to review close calls starting this season. MLB announced Thursday that owners, players and umpires have approved the new system. Each manager will be allowed to challenge at least one call per game. If he’s right, he gets another challenge. After the seventh inning, a crew chief can request a review on his own. The so-called “neighbourhood play” at second base on double plays cannot be challenged. Many had safety concerns for middle infielders being wiped out by hard-charging runners if the phantom force was subject to review. All reviews will be done by current MLB umpires at a New York office. Additional umpires will be hired to create a large enough staff. Associated Press

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My husband’s family came to town for a week over the holidays. We made plans to be with them every evening except one. My parents were in the final stages of a job relocation and were leaving town that same weekend. We gave my family the one evening, Sunday, that was not delegated to my in-laws. My husband’s parents asked us twice to go out to dinner with them and their friends on that same evening. We politely declined both times, explaining that we had plans. That Sunday morning, we found out that my in-laws had made dinner reservations for us anyway. Somehow, to my husband, this meant we had to reconsider our options. I thought it was extremely rude. After several hours of arguing, my husband and I compromised by saying we would go to dinner with his parents, eat quickly and then spend the rest of the evening with my parents. Well, dinner was a disaster. One couple was an hour late, and my in-laws insisted on waiting for them. Then, my husband and I, along with his brother, were put at the “children’s” table with three kids under the age of 13. After we finally managed to leave, we ran to my parents’ house only to find everyone else had gone. My husband considers this a successful outcome, but I do not. My family was deeply offended by my in-laws’ usurping our only evening together. Am I crazy to think he should have honored the original plans? -Still Angry Dear Still: Your husband is wrong to think your plans should be changed because someone else rearranged them without your knowledge or permission. He obviously wanted to spend time with his family and not yours, which was unfair under the circumstances. When you agreed to attend his family’s dinner, you also should have set a time to leave and done so, regardless of where you were in the meal. A better compromise would have been for him to have dinner with his folks while you spent the time with yours. While not ideal, it would have been better than anger, resentment and an argument. Now let it go. You’ll do better next time. Dear Annie: My grandma died six months ago, and I miss her more than anything. Life just isn’t the same without her. I’m only 13 years old, and this confuses me. I’m mad at God for taking my grandma from me. My friends say I haven’t been the same, that I’m gloomy and moody and have a short temper. My sister shows hardly any emotion, but I can’t think about my grandma without crying. I feel like I’m taking too long in my grieving process. Am I? Do you have any suggestions? -- Crying Granddaughter Dear Crying: We are so sorry to hear about your grandma. Obviously, you were close to her and miss her terribly. There is no set timetable for grieving, and some people take longer than others. However, if you haven’t managed to move beyond your initial depressed state for six months, please ask your parents to make an appointment for you to see your doctor and a grief counselor, and perhaps discuss this with your clergyperson to understand how God could take your grandma from you. Talking to others who are trained to discuss your grief can help enormously. Dear Annie: The 42-year-old lady who said she doesn’t have many friends and never could read body language well has classic symptoms of Asperger syndrome (recently renamed high-functioning autism). My son wasn’t diagnosed until he was 17, and it has made a world of difference. He was always a bit quirky -- a round peg in a square hole. Most people with Asperger’s are highly intelligent and dependable and find it difficult to lie because they see the world very literally. -- HFA Mom Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Imagine your daily routine. Now imagine your daily routine without your toilet, your bathtub, or your kitchen sink. Welcome … to Urinetown! Written in 2001 by Greg Kotis, with a score by Mark Hollmann, Urinetown the Musical is the latest show undergoing production at Mount Baker Wild Theatre. The show, a favourite of backroom intellectuals, is lending an entirely new image to the theatre department at Mount Baker; it’s a fresh concept that is both inventive and entertaining. Mary Hamilton tackles the stage direction of the production; Scott Martin helms the musical direction. Mt. Baker Wild Theatre is thrilled to welcome Toronto based choreographer Siona Jackson, who studied at the Royal Academy of Dance, has instructed at the National Ballet School, and has appeared in musicals such as Chess and West

David Webb as Officer Lockstock and Emma Schraepel as Little Sally. Inspired by the most pressing ecological questions of the day, Urinetown is a satirical and provocatively funny look at the environment, big business, and unfortunate romance. It runs from May 8 to May 11 at the Key City Theatre, and is guaranteed to be the theatrical event of the season.

Down to the Crossroads Mike Selby
“The images — the wanderer’s voice and its echoes, the mocking wind running through the guitar strings, and the implacable, slow, pursuing footsteps — are full of evil, surcharged with the terror of one alone among the moving, unseen shapes of the night.” So wrote noted musicologist Rudi Blesh in his 1946 book ‘Shining Trumpets: A History of Jazz.’ The book was a wealth of historic information for fans of this style of music. Although reviewed as “flawed and biased,” and nowhere near as good as other books on the subject, ‘Shining Trumpets’ would forever change music in the later half of the 20th century, with nothing more than the above quote. In one of the shortest entries in the book, Blesh is describing ‘Hellhound On My Trail’ — an unknown song by an unknown artist named Robert Johnson. At the time, all Blesh knew about Johnson was the handful of recordings he had made in 1936, with ‘Hellhound’ being one of them. The scratchy recording Blesh heard was unique enough to earn a mention in his book, but nothing more. He didn’t include any biographical details of the performer, as he didn’t know of any. No one did. In fact this was the first mention of Robert Johnson in print. Any of Blesh’s readers lucky enough to find a copy of ‘Hellhound’ to listen to found themselves transfixed by the absolute mastery of Johnson’s guitar playing; simultaneously haunted by the pain in his voice. Johnson’s songs almost sounded supernatural, causing a small exodus of academics, journalists, record producers and jazz aficionados to the rural parts of the American South. No one was prepared for what was (and what wasn’t) found. What was found was the notion that in the late 1920s, Robert Johnson went to the crossroads of his home town (Hazelhurst, Mississippi), and sold his soul to the devil in exchange for musical genius. All this seemed to make sense to all those who told it. Many people witnessed

Johnson die at age 27, crawling across a nightclub floor writhing in tremendous pain. The devil was dragging him to hell. The undeniable blood-chilling recordings made of his tortured-soul of a voice only added credence to this much believed explanation. What really happened and who Robert Johnson really was has been extraordinarily difficult to pin down. Part of the trouble researchers have had was the fact that the name Robert Johnson is almost as common as John Smith. Whole articles, liner-notes, and even books have been published about the wrong Robert Johnson. The ‘real’ Robert Johnson also grew up with a rotating series of fathers, and he went by eight different last names during his short life. Although not as cool as the devil story, Johnson’s death was the result of being poisoned by a jealous husband (like many touring musicians, Johnson “liked the ladies”). The crossroads legend was further deflated when a Southern reporter (ingeniously working as an exterminator to get access to people’s homes) found testimony that Robert Johnson had indeed gone to the crossroads that night, but instead of his soul he traded a pair of shoes for some guitar lessons. (The crossroads are still there in Hazelhurst, where North Ragsdale Avenue and East Conway Street cross each other. Their Chamber of Commerce is happy to direct tourists there). The style of blues found in ‘Hellhound On My Trail’ and his other songs was incredibly original. They followed an unusual A/A/B rhythm, which (instead of dying with him) appeared again in a 1956 song titled ‘Hound Dog.’ The folk revival of the ‘60s saw the commercial release of Johnson’s recordings, which caused Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, and Jimmy Page to change their style of playing guitar. It is a sobering fact that without Blesh’s book, rock and roll (I know, the devil’s music), might not have come to pass. “His music,” said Eric Clapton, “remains the most
Avalanche centre issues warning for much of B.C.’s backcountry C anadian Press
REVELSTOKE, B.C. — The Canadian Avalanche Centre has issued a special warning for the public to use extreme caution in British Columbia’s backcountry this weekend. The centre’s Karl Klassen says the main concern is warm, possibly record-breaking temperatures, which will destabilize an already unstable snowpack, leading to surface

slides. The warning involves most regions in B.C., including the north and south coast, Sea to Sky, north and south Rockies, Cariboos, the Purcells, Kootenay-Boundary, and the north and south Columbias. Klassen says the potential is there for very large, natural- and human-triggered avalanches. He says it’s common to have a false sense of
training stay out of the terrain and that experienced backcountry enthusiasts keep away from steep slopes, especially when the sun is out.

Weak Canadian dollar not so bad for domestic retailers, tourism, economists say
VANCOUVER — Canada’s top economists say they expect the Canadian dollar to remain weak and perhaps reach as low as 90 cents US by the end of the
year, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The loonie declined 6.6 per cent last year and has dropped another three per cent in just the first two weeks of 2014. On Thursday, an ex-
pert panel told a Vancouver Board of Trade forum that a devalued loonie could mean less foreign investment and lower commodity prices. But they also say it
There’s snow deal like this.
could lead to a stronger U.S. and global economy, which could benefit Canada’s export industries, domestic retailers, and tourism. The panel says much of Canada’s economic prospects depend on getting Alberta oil to market, and the sooner British Columbia can finalize projects such as the Northern Gateway pipeline, the better. The economists say demand for clean energy is high, so they expect the liquefied natural gas projects touted by B.C. Premier Christy Clark will go ahead, but they also warn against being too optimistic about gas prices due to competition from the U.S. and Australia.

A family honours their daughter’s wishes Donna Grainger
Even though it is one of the most difficult times of their life, Michelle Evans and Laine Evans of Cranbrook recently reached out to East Kootenay Foundation for Health to fulfill a wish of their daughter. Their 18-year old daughter Kassy’s young life ended much too soon. During this difficult time Michelle and Laine learned more about their daughter and her desire to give back to her community and specifically health care. A simple line of written words from this beautiful young woman indicated that she would like to see something special purchased for the regional hospital’s emergency department.
After much discussion the item chosen was a blanket warmer that offers patients a comfortable and warm environment while in the ER. “Someone laid a warm blanket over me as I was hugging Kassy,” said Michelle. “I’m sure it was to prevent me going into shock but that warmth washed right over me. “To honour Kassy we hope that the blanket warmer we’ve chosen will bring that same warmth to other families,” added Evans. A legacy gift can shape the lives of those who come after you and translate into improving the lives of others. To learn more about planned giving programs at EKFH visit www.ekfh.ca.

Birdwatching with the Rocky Mountain Naturalists
Results of the Fernie, Elkford Christmas bird counts Daryl C alder
The Fernie Christmas Bird Count in mid-December added valuable data to the understanding of winter birds in BC and Canada. Due to high winds in the continental divide area, the bird count scheduled for Waterton Lakes Park was cancelled. Six birders from the Crowsnest Pass however, used the opportunity to invite themselves to the Fernie event where they were gladly welcomed. Over 20 birders canvassed the forests, waterways, residential and urban habitats, and were rewarded with a wide spectrum of sightings. Unexpected was the absence of winter finches. One explanation is, due to a local cone crop failure, coupled with a bumper crop elsewhere, winter finches have headed east and south this year. Pine Siskins, ordinarily quite abundant, have fled en masse, yet have not been replaced by migrants as is usually the case. Even Red-breasted Nuthatches are scarcer, although they are cyclical due to irruptive behaviour. An irruption is a dramatic, irregular migration of large numbers of birds to areas where they aren’t typically found, possibly at a great distance from their normal range. Several factors can lead to
irruptive years for different birds. The most common is a lack of food in normal wintering grounds, and harsh cold or severe winter weather may force birds to find more temperate wintering areas. Overbreeding may deplete even plentiful food supplies causing populations to irrupt unpredictably. One amazing species found along the Elk River and other fast moving streams is the American Dipper. This chunky bird of western streams is North America’s only truly aquatic songbird. It catches all of its food underwater in swiftly flowing, unpolluted streams by swimming and walking on the stream bottom. The Dipper chooses a nest site, invariably along a stream, that provides security from floods and predators. Availability of suitable nest sites appears to limit its population. To be able to survive in cold waters during the winter, the Dipper has a low metabolic rate, extra oxygen-carrying capacity in its blood, and a thick coat of feathers. Unlike most other songbirds, but similar to ducks, dippers molt their wing and tail feathers all at once in late summer. The little bird is flightless during this time. Dippers don’t migrate but may move to larger, unfrozen rivers in winter, or follow insect hatches in spring and summer.
