Council approves permit to develop ‘bunker’ BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

A solution that would put an end to a 12-year-old blight on Creston’s downtown core might finally be at hand, town council learned at the Jan. 14 regular meeting. Council approved the application for a development permit that could pave the way for construction of 85 seniors apartments on the site of “the bunker” at Northwest Boulevard and Vancouver Street. The application by the property owner, Chaplin West Ventures Ltd., proposes to use the existing concrete foundations, which were poured in 2001. The original zoning bylaw was written to accommodate 50 motel sleeping units, 80 seniors apartments and 20 seniors long-term care beds. Construction didn’t proceed when the original developer’s funding dried up after the dot-com crash of the early 1990s. “I think this is great!” Coun. Tanya Wall said as she thanked town staff for working with the developer in recent months. See BUNKER, page 2

Thunder Cats aiming for the top BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

With a playoff spot secured, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats have set their sights a bit higher: staying at the top of their division. “I think we’re on course for what we

wanted to do in the regular season,” said head coach Josh Hepdtich. “We set a goal for the playoffs, and now we’ve set a goal to win the division. … We’re trying to increase the spread and lock up home-ice advantage.” The Thunder Cats are currently at the top of the Kootenay International Junior

For those looking for something a little more relaxing, there will be hayrides throughout the day. Food always is a big hit, starting with the outdoor kitchen with hotdogs and hot chocolate, followed at 5:30 p.m. with an orange or parmesan chicken dinner and dessert. For

he Kootenay Chin Woo Martial Arts Association is hosting a martial arts show on Jan. 31, dedicated to the preservation and introduction of Asia’s rich history, culture, health practices and philosophy to the Kootenays. “We want to get the entire community involved so we can provide educational workshops in these areas in the future especially through the Deep Water Martial Arts Convention in March,” said Neil Ripski. “Education is the key to bringing people more understanding of how

they can take their health care into their own hands.” For next week’s demonstration, part of a Chinese New Year celebration, the association has invited martial arts groups from the Creston Valley through to Alberta and Washington. But the event — followed by a traditional Chinese New Year buffet at Club Café — is something that will appeal to a wide range of people. “Guests will be provided with a real show of the skills and training we are providing to our youth, an amazing night of demonstrations, lion dancing, and demonstrations by master-level practitioners,” said Ripski. “We are even going to be doing demonstrations rarely seen outside of China like iron body and iron egg!” The show runs at the Prince Charles

From page 1 Municipal services co-ordinator Ross Beddoes outlined the development permit application. It largely conforms to the previous zoning bylaw, he said, but proposes to increase the number of apartments from 80 to 85, but not to build motel and long-term care units. “We recommend the approval of the application, with four conditions in place,” Beddoes said. The four conditions include amending the bylaw to increase the number of seniors apartments, reduce parking requirements to allow for one on-site stall for every three residents, require the developer to submit a detailed landscaping and screening plan, signage details and building colours to the satisfaction of staff, and have the developer post a $25,000 landscaping bond. with an eyesore when it was unable to proceed with discretion, Coun. Judy Gadicke asked Beddoes if the town could require the current developer to post a bond to ensure completion of the project. “The municipality doesn’t have the option to demand performance bonds,” Beddoes said. “I think it’s too early in the process to start celebrating,” Mayor Ron Toyota said on Wednesday. “But this is a start, and an indication that perhaps the developer has some confidence that by moving the application along he can secure the investment needed for a project of this size.” Approval of the development permit application is the first step in a lengthy series of approvals before construction can start. Thunder Cats

From page 1 The Thunder Cats added two wins for an eight-game streak on the weekend, hosting and defeating the Columbia Valley Rockies 2-1 on Friday. Their last game, in Invermere, resulted in a 5-4 overtime win for Creston. “We knew they were going to come and play with a lot more confidence than they had before” said Hepditch. But the Thunder Cats had a strong start, outshooting the Rockies 20-9 in the first period, with Jesse Collins (power play) and Logan Styler scoring the Thunder Cats’ only goals of the game. The Rockies’ only goal was scored with 46 seconds left in the first period. On Saturday, the Thunder Cats visited Kimberley, where they came away with a 4-2 victory after outshooting the Dynamiters 43-19. Brandon Formosa scored in the first period, followed by Styler adding a second on a power play in the second. Two goals by Kimberley tied the score by the end of the second, but that didn’t deter the Thunder Cats. “We seemed to have lots of jump when we got to the third period,” said Hepditch. “I don’t think they could match our intensity.” Formosa earned a hat trick, scoring at 9:52 and 1:46 in the third period. The Thunder Cats have a busy week ahead, with five games in eight days, starting with a visit from Fernie on Friday. The Ghostriders picked up a few new players at the trade deadline, so Hepditch isn’t quite sure what to expect. “That’s definitely going to be a key game,” said Hepditch. “They’re not far behind us in the standings, so that’s going to be a game we’re going to want to win for sure.” On Saturday, the Thunder Cats head to Castlegar to take on the Rebels, returning to the West Kootenay again on Tuesday to play against the Beaver Valley Nitehawks, to whom they lost a game earlier in the season. The Thunder Cats then visit Fernie again on Jan. 30 before hosting Castlegar on Jan. 31. The team still has a month to go in the regular season, but Hepditch said the Thunder Cats have a good combination of experienced and new players to help hang on to the division’s top spot. “A lot say that, but we really do feel it with the leadership we have,” he said.

Library hosting Family Literacy Day events BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

A full day of activities is planned at the Creston Valley Public Library for the Jan. 25 celebration of Family Literacy Day, with music, readings by elected officials and other entertainment on the schedule. People in all walks of life depend on knowledge and information to make the world better, and the annual event is an opportunity to talk about literacy and celebrate how it contributes to health, wealth and general well-being, said chief librarian Aaron Francis. “The stories we read in picture books, fairy tales and novels help us to understand ourselves and each other better, and guide us towards making ethical and lifeaffirming choices,” he said. “Families and parents have a responsibility for ensuring that our children have access to this knowledge and information.” Starting at 10 a.m., Francis, Vicky Koenig and Elena Yeung will offer music and stories for children, Creston Mayor Ron Toyota and Regional District of Central Kootenay directors Larry Binks and Garry Jackman will read picture books, and Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie will offer Ktunaxa stories and songs. “These leaders understand that increased literacy leads directly to a stronger economy and commu-

nity development,” said Francis. “But it’s not just about the message. We’ll have music, snacks, games and entertainment for the whole family. You can come and meet other families, make a free library card, pick up some new release DVDs to watch at home, and generally have a fun day out with the family.” In addition to the reading and music, Gail Kitt will lead a crafting workshop at noon, and Emma Feltham will offer Wii games on the big screen from 1-4 p.m. Francis hopes that Saturday’s event will have long-lasting impacts, as parents are inspired to pass a love of reading on to their children. “It’s critical that we develop this habit early in life, and this requires active assistance from parents and caregivers,” he said. “I usually recommend that parents let kids choose their own reading material, even if it turns out to be something that the parent doesn’t particularly approve of. Our interests change over time, and our judgement becomes more sophisticated. If they enjoy what they have chosen, it is because it is appropriate for their reading and intellectual level at that moment. The important thing is that they are reading. “And the best way to inspire an interest in reading is for your children to see you reading!”

Untraceable and accidental 911 calls part of Creston RCMP week BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff Creston RCMP spent many hours last week attempting to track untraceable 911 phone calls, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. Six calls were routed through the Whimster Road cellphone tower, and in none of those cases were police able to get any information about the caller or the call’s origination. Several other non-emergency 911 calls were also received, including one in which the telephone owner believed he dialed 999, and another from a minor accident in which no injuries resulted. Police Beat In other police news, Creston RCMP responded to a total of 66 calls from Jan. 13-19, Gollan said. January 13 •No injuries to a vehicle’s occupants resulted in a collision with a deer on 36th Avenue North. •A break and entry to a Northwest Boulevard business was reported. Later, items stolen during the break-in were found on 10th Avenue North. The next day, police confronted a suspect, who denied any involvement. Gollan noted that there had been no similar break-ins since.

•When police investigated a report about a male camping in a field near Cavell Street they learned that he was a cyclist who travels and camps as a way of life. •An ongoing dispute that led to a fight between two Prince Charles Secondary School students will be dealt with by the school, Gollan said. •No injuries resulted in a three-car collision on Canyon Street, but one driver was issued a violation ticket. •A parked truck’s window was smashed near Summit Creek Bridge while snowmobilers were out for the day. •Thirty drivers were stopped in a vehicle check on 36th Avenue North. No violations were noted. January 14 •A vehicle went off Mallory Road in icy conditions. The driver was issued a ticket for not being able to produce a licence. •A female reported to be missing from her Eighth Avenue South residence was located a short time later. •Police did not locate a “rusty older pickup truck” containing three males reported to be drinking alcohol on Canyon Street. •Damage to a windshield on Ibbitson Street was reported, with the owner suspecting a BB gun might have been the cause.

•January 15 •A well-being check on a Highway 3 resident revealed he was OK. •A curfew check on an Elm Street female recently released from jail found her to be at home as required. •Police attended a Seventh Avenue South residence to assist Red Deer RCMP with a theft investigation. •An Ibbitson Street residence reported a phone junction box outside the home had been opened. •A male was held in prison for border personnel after he was arrested for attempting to cross into Canada with firearms. •An Erickson Road resident complained about a suspicious vehicle shining a light on his property. Police responded that it was a squad car from which officers had noticed an open garage. January 16 •Police were called to Pine Street to assist emergency health services personnel with a patient. •Police assisted Nelson RCMP by arresting a male on 11th Avenue South and holding him in cells until a court appearance. •Police assisted Nakusp RCMP by serving a subpoena to a Kitchener Road resident. young girl struggle to crawl around a circle of mats — something so simple for you and I yet hugely challenging for her and the whole community wins as a result of that opportunity. Every day, I see seniors up here walking or swimming or even merely sitting in the lobby, this community gathering place, and I just know that without the ability to do these activities, these individuals would not be nearly as healthy or as transformed as they have become. The ever increasing amount of school kids we see and have the opportunity to teach how to swim or survive in the water amazes me — back with the outdoor pool, we used to scramble to fit in the Grade 3 swim program in June. Now we get the opportunity to teach the Grade 3, 5, 6 and 10s — yet another community win. You also have to consider the employees that work here — some starting families, some maintaining families, some going to further schooling after having an unsurpassed opportunity to grow as lifeguards or instructors, but the common denominator is all are contributing members of society and part of the fabric of our community no less than any other service in the valley. A common theme at Recreation and Parks Association meetings at the provincial and even national level is that leisure service providers don’t toot their horns nearly as

Library stays The past is up-to-date what we with new choose to technology remember

I’ve never been one for making New Year’s resolutions, but we do have plenty of plans for the library this year, so here is a sneak peak at what’s in store for 2014!

Since the past is the sum total of all we have ever learned, experienced and sense, the memory banks can be pretty full — there is a lot to recall, if we wish, or not

The Book

The Voice of

Experience

Drop

Aaron Francis Given that so much information is now online, and access to technology is required for getting just about anything done these days, it’s essential that we continually keep our technology up to date — as well as continue to provide training and assistance on how to use this technology. By the time this column is published, we will have moved to a new Integrated Library System. This is the system that stores our catalogue, patron records, lets us know who borrowed what, and so forth. See LIBRARY, page 9

Mary Underhill recall if the memory is too painful or negative. And all too often we hear people speak of only the negative things that have happened — how terrible the weather was last summer or wondering why Joe and Sally had to split up. These negative recollections, if dwelled upon, can be quite harmful to one’s mental, emotional and physical health. Focusing on negativity often sets the adrenaline surging out of control, tensing muscles, causing anger and tears, generally upsetting one’s life. So, it really is neces-

ary! u n a J y in f i l a u Q

sary to take a good look at our past, and decide what it is that we wish to remember. In talking with my husband on the topic of this column, we started reminiscing about some of the memories we have shared over our 35 years together. We agreed that there were many things better left behind a closed door in our collective mind! But there are so many more special incidents that we could recall with joy and laughter. And we have found that most of our favourite memories are of little things — like the time we were walking downtown from our B&B in a small Scottish town, and a rather elderly ginger cat called to us from across the road, then came trotting over for some pats, purring loudly all the while, and then headed home! Total strangers we were, but he knew we were “cat people” just the same. He still makes us smile. Over the years, we have spent quite a lot of time on Isla Mujeres, a little island in the Caribbean just off Cancun, Mexico. There are many good memories, but one of the most truly incredible was walking along a boardwalk one Christmas Eve and seeing light from a full moon shining on one of the rollers coming into land — pure liquid silver! Going back in my memory to my childhood in southern Ontario, my Dad and I went down to the maple bush to sugar off the tree sap in a cauldron over an open fire — I

smell it, I taste it, I feel it every time I pour maple syrup (the medium kind) over my pancakes. In my work as a stress therapist, I frequently hear about the negatives in a client’s life, both past and present, and usually am able to help them deal with the unpleasantness that is so stressful and help them think of more positive things. Worrying is one of the things that pulls people down the most — finances, family upsets, old disputes or whatever. And in many cases, if we can use the word “concern” in place of “worry”, the tension is greatly relieved. The past begins to look less ominous and less likely to hold their attention. There are, of course, many other reasons for negativity in the past, differing in type and intensity with the individual. An old song, first broadcast in 1944 (thank you, Buddy Gold, of CROC Radio for looking up the year) says it all, I believe: You’ve got to accentuate the positive, Eliminate the negative, Latch on to the affirmative, Don’t mess with Mister In-Between. So, choose the memories that are positive, those that make you smile. We try to recall at least one of those each day so that we can enjoy these special moments again. Remember that some memories make us happy and others make us sad. Our choice! Mary Underhill is a stress therapist and grief counsellor.

In the ’60s and ’70s, young Canadians who travelled through Europe — a pretty common thing to do in those days — routinely sewed little Canadian flags onto their backpacks or jackets. It wasn’t because they were patriotic, for the most part. Instead, it was because Canadians on the whole had a good reputation. We were respectful of others, not pushy about our beliefs and non-judgmental. And we were polite. Truth be told, we also didn’t want to be identified as Americans, that being the Vietnam War era and all. I wonder how we are perceived in Europe and around the world today? If news at home is an indication, our reputation has taken a beating. Take the holiday incident at Edmonton International Airport, where not only did security personnel fail to prevent a 19-year-old from getting on a plane after they discovered he had a pipe bomb in his camera bag, they tried to give the bomb back to him before he boarded. With every new report last week about the incident, I began to think Canadians had suddenly become the stupidest people in the world. As I understand it, the young man got together with a buddy to make the bomb — a six-inch length of pipe stuffed with gunpowder with the end of a nine-foot length of fuse inserted into the business end of the device — so that they could blow up a shed and video the explosion. They didn’t pursue the plan though and he stuffed the bomb into his camera bag, completely forgetting about it when he grabbed the

bag and headed off to the airport with his parents for a trip to Mexico. Dumb, meet dumber. When the pipe glowed bright white on the X-ray as the family attempted to

This is also the year I hope we can finally say goodbye to the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort. The law currently states that if they do not have anything substantive built by the end of their environmental certificate, they must re-submit the entire project. That date comes up this October. After two decades of fighting a development we know is bad for our economy and environment, it’s time the Liberal government recognized that the continued lack of financial backing for this resort means that even big developers know it’s a bad idea. This year, I hope that the Liberals’ Jumbo Glacier Resort champion, MLA Bill Bennett, realizes his time is better spent preparing for the Columbia River Treaty review than forcing through a hated project via questionable means like the fake municipality. May 2014 keep Qat’muk, Jumbo, wild. To be sure, 2014 is bound to keep Kootenay residents on their toes with all kinds of goings-on. I hope this year brings you much joy, prosperity and celebration. Michelle Mungall is the member of the legislative assembly for the NelsonCreston provincial riding, and is the Opposition critic for social development.

Too much litter beside highway To the Editor: We, in our household, are composters, conservers, recyclers, reusers and refunders. We’re also concerned about our health, so we walk every day. In addition to reaping the benefits of healthy bone density and fresh air, the walks also garner us bags and bags of garbage. Recently I was walking on Highway 3, just in front of the Ramada Hotel, and I spied some detritus on the north side of the road, which is a popular “rest stop” for semis. I carry a bag with me every day but on this day my measly one little plastic grocery bag hardly held a quarter of the “bounty” I could have collected. I couldn’t in all conscience leave it there until May or June for the Dash for Trash to collect. (By the way, kudos to the Columbia Brewery and Town of Creston for organizing the annual drive to clean up our fair town, but once a year isn’t quite enough). A good percentage of the garbage is from Tim Hortons — I pick up their cups, wrappers and bags daily. What I don’t get is why their customers go through the drive-thru, only to discard said cups, wrappers and bags just minutes down the road. Are they in such a rush that they can’t sit down in the store to consume their food? Although Tim Hortons’ drive-thru is efficient without impacting local and highway traffic, it lacks the parking to accommodate semis and other large vehicular traffic. And so the drivers park across Northwest Boulevard so they can hop over for their cup of joe. Ergo, more detritus on the space near the Town of Creston welcome sign. Perhaps a partial solution would be for the town to install litter barrels in each of these prime trucker stops. I have no idea if that would work but, who knows, people might use one if it was there. Would the litterbugs of the world be incensed if others discarded garbage on their lawns or would they feel right at home? What would our community look like in a few years if the garbage were allowed to accumulate? Would the litterbugs be the first to condemn the town as a dump? Can it be so difficult to save your garbage for the next bin or even, heaven forbid, your own garbage can? In a better world, there would be many others joining me in keeping our

Library

From page 5 One major improvement you will notice is that the catalogue — which will be accessible from home or anywhere — will provide access to books throughout the Kootenays. You can place holds on items from Nelson or Castlegar just as you can from our own collection. A second improvement is that you will be able to see our ebook and audiobook collection from within the catalogue, rather than having to go through the Library To Go website. The new system will also provide significantly better protection of data privacy, something we take seriously at the library. Later in the year, we will install iPads in the children’s area. The educational potential of these devices is incredible, and we are committed to ensuring that everybody, regardless of age, has access to this technology.

OpiniOn Line

community clean and attractive. In a perfect world, that wouldn’t be necessary as people wouldn’t litter in the first place. (I don’t, by any means, assume there aren’t others out there picking up — this is for those whose consciences haven’t kicked in yet!) Debby Schurer Creston

Lines were crossed in fire debate To the Editor: Until today, I was extremely proud of the community I live in. I have always seen our community as a diverse family where, while we might not always agree and sometime our different opinions result in heated discussions, in the end we always find a way to work together to do the best we can for our community. Recently, this view has been severely shaken with the debate over fire protection for the West Creston area. Regardless of whether you are for or against this issue, there are lines in a democratic society that should never be crossed when expressing your views on any issue and those lines have definitely now been crossed in this situation. It started with information posters being ripped off mailboxes, then moved on to garbage being strewn on the property of Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks. From there it escalated to anonymous emails containing profanity and threats being sent to several of the supporters of the fire service, and the latest, and by far most disturbing action, has been the deliberate poisoning of Mr. Binks’s family dog. This is a man who, whether you agree with his politics or not, has worked to do what he thinks is best for the community and he is repaid by having his family viciously attacked in such a manner. I want to personally send my condolences to Larry and his wife, Susan, for the terrible loss they have endured as a result of this situation getting out of control, and ask the public that if they know anything that might assist the police in determining who committed this cowardly crime that they please come forward. We need to calm down, take a breath, and reclaim our community from these people whose actions have crossed the line. Rachel Beck West Creston Improving Wi-Fi connectivity and access to electrical outlets throughout the building is a third area slated for improvement. At just about any time, one can see a half-dozen or more people connected to our Wi-Fi, and we expect more and more folks to take advantage of this free service. Landscaping of the front area of the library is scheduled for the spring. We plan to provide better outdoor seating areas, which will ease some of the congestion around the front entrance during the summer months. Our children’s area is slated for a second phase of improvements. In addition to a new computer area, we plan to open the space up, install more familyfriendly seating and begin development of a toy library. We want every child in Creston to have a place in our library. Signage and displays throughout the library are in urgent need of an upgrade. We need to make it easier for you to come in and find what you want — and

Earthquakes could strain oil pipeline To the Editor: Why is it that some occurrences are so soon forgotten? Could it possibly be that they warn of financial or environmental chaos and the powers concerned would rather turn a blind eye in favour of short-term profit? Please don’t tell me that the government and the board members of Enbridge and Keystone have already forgotten the two earthquakes that occurred off Haida Gwai in 2011 and 2012, the effects of which were felt up to 100 kilometres inland. In my opinion, it is absolute madness to even consider moving Alberta oilsands product in liquid form in pipes through the Rockies and Coast ranges. Just consider a privatized oil pipe trying to withstand the terrific strain and stress of an earthquake. And they are only going to get worse and more frequent. We have been warned. Read Luke chapter 21. Our poor old world can’t go on forever. The signs of the end are everywhere, but no one knows when or how it will actually happen. In the meantime, the new pipelines must be stopped. A good place to start is with the Council of Canadians, by sending a letter to 700170 Laurier Ave. W., Ottawa, Ont., K1P 5V5, phoning 1-800-387-7177 or emailing inquiries@canadians.org. Hydro bills lower with daylight time To the Editor: (Re: “Directors discuss daylight time issue”, Jan. 16 Advance) I am astonished at Regional District of Central Kootenay Area A director Garry Jackman’s saying that there is no economic benefit to changing time to make daylight extend longer into the evening. Recently, BC Hydro announced electricity rate increases of 28 per cent over five years, the first increase set for April 1. See DAYLIGHT, page 12 perhaps discover something that you didn’t know you wanted! Speaking of collections, 2013 was a year of cleaning up the unused and unwanted items from our collection. We’re determined to keep our shelves filled with the highest quality items in a quantity suitable for our space. I can promise that, in 2014, you will see all of the latest bestsellers, award winners and feature films, as well as some outstanding hidden gems hitting our shelves. As always, we beg you to tell us what you want. A significant portion of our budget is devoted for direct patron requests, and what we don’t purchase we can usually borrow from another library. My space is up here, and I’m just getting started! Come by and see what’s new. Better yet, drop a suggestion in the suggestion box or talk to me about your ideas for the library. Aaron Francis is the chief librarian at the Creston Valley Public Library.

What I don’t always talk about is the great on-road driving capabilities. The Toyota 4Runner hugs the road and the bucket seats hug you. It is very comfortable to drive and you feel safe driving it. The suspension and shocks give you a firm ride but not enough to give you that washboard effect. Vision while driving is superb, with little to no blind spots. The thick steering wheel and responsive steering makes you feel like you are driving a car. Verdict The Toyota 4Runner could be on just about everybody’s wish list, given its on and off-road capabilities.

Concert society presenting Sultans of String SUBMITTED

On Jan. 30, the Juno-nominated Sultans of String release their highoctane world beat-jazz-symphonic mashup, Symphony, presented by the Creston Concert Society. They will be joined by Creston resident Jeff Faragher, who hails originally from Edmonton and is the conductor of the Symphony of the Kootenays, as well as being involved with many facets of music. Known for dizzying roots music jams, polyrhythms and revved up riffs, the Sultans of String sound can’t be pinned down — it’s Sable Island meets the Silk Road, with detours through the Gypsyjazz coffeehouses of Eastern Europe, next

Fiery violin dances with kinetic guitar, while a funky bass lays down unstoppable grooves. Throughout, acoustic strings meet electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound.

Kicking things off as a dynamic duo playing tiny cafes in 2007, this fiercely talented and hardworking indie act has been on a meteoric rise, with an astonishing number of awards and accolades in tow. Invitations to play world stages and with such legendary artists as the Chieftains and David Bromberg are recent highlights. The Chieftains’ Paddy Moloney also appears on Symphony.

The band is led by Juno-nominated six-string violinist Chris McKhool (Jesse Cook, Pavlo) who grew up in a LebaneseEgyptian (Makhoul) house bursting with music and diversity. Growing up, McKhool was fed a steady diet of delicious musicality alongside Middle Eastern cuisine and violin lessons.

When McKhool first heard founding guitarist Kevin Laliberté’s rumba rhythm, their musical synergy created Sultans of String’s signature sound — the intimate and playful relationship between violin and guitar. From this rich foundation, the dynamic duo has grown, featuring such amazing musical friends as second guitarist Eddie Paton (Robert Michaels), bass master

Drew Birston (Chantal Kreviazuk, Amanda Martinez), and Cuban percussionist Chendy Leon (Parachute Club, Alex Cuba), as well as special guests such as folk-pop darlings Dala, the Chieftains’ Paddy Moloney, ukulele giant James Hill and others.

Classically-schooled McKhool thought, “Why stop there?” With Symphony, the Sultans of String have brought the glorious and majestic sound of a full orchestra to their feisty world-jazz compositions, to create the ultimate crossover album. Friends remembering Wil Hudson Buffalo Trails Coffee House will be closed to regular business while owner Michele Staggs hosts an open house for Wil Hudson’s friends from 3-5 p.m. Jan. 24. The event offers a chance for his friends to relate stories of the longtime Creston resident — and until 2012, a regular letter to the editor writer — who died Jan. 10 at the age of 85, well-known for his trademark beard, strong opinions and quick wit. Following are remembrances by two of his friends, Staggs and Dianne Grant. (Their full submissions can be found at www.crestonvalleyadvance. ca/ourtown.)

We had the pleasure of being a small part of the adventurous life of Wil Hudson’s and we are much richer for it. I picture you sipping on your coffee in your spot at your table at Buffalo Trails and I feel joy. Thank you, Wil, for your character, loyalty and insight, but most of all your friendship. Your spirit is on that train. BY DIANNE GRANT

BY MICHELE STAGGS You cannot pick your family, but sometimes you’re lucky enough that people pick you. Wil Hudson picked our little coffee shop very soon after we opened. Morning coffee soon became afternoon coffee, as well, and soon Wil was a regular. Some people thought that maybe he wasn’t a desirable patron in his scruffy ZZ Top beard, baggy coat, hat and shades, not to mention his somewhat opinionated personality. We, however, fell in love with him almost immediately. Wil became part of our Buffalo Trails family. The rebellious streak, that spark, that gleam in his eye when he knew he was going against common opinion was so intriguing. We loved his phrasing, his wit, his incredible smarts. He was our spell check, history teacher and our philosopher, but mostly our friend. Wil lived his life to his own beat. He

was unique. A “hypocritical vegetarian” he liked to call himself. Great memories of his time spent in San Francisco and up north were always entertaining to listen to. He loved my kids, Libby, Miah and Hannah, and got a kick out of Libby calling me Home Slice. He came in one day when I was bundled up in a sweater, and he said, “You look home slicish as hell today, Michele.” That just makes me smile every time I think of it. One day, I thought Wil was asleep, eyes closed, hat pulled down. I asked him if he was tired and he said, “No, I have memorized every single word on the chalkboard and I would be happy to recite it,” which he did flawlessly.

Wil Hudson was born in Wisconsin, moved to San Francisco, and eventually settled in Vancouver, where he made his living as a printer. By all accounts, he was a damn good one, too. He pioneered new typeset style, and spent some years on Baffin Island during the 1960s teaching printing techniques to the Inuit. During that time, he also translated some of their native language. He devoted much of his time to his great passions: railways and ships. He owned a model railway, and built a replica of a steamship from scratch, which he worked on for over 17 years. He also loved cats, and there was no stray he would not take in and try to help, even if he went short of food himself. Wil made many, many friends during his coffee shop visits around town, and his long beard and baritone voice were distinctive trademarks. He could often be a thorn in someone’s side, saying things as they were and not mincing words. But he was never cruel or vindictive, simply observant and articulate at expressing what he saw. He lived a full, long life and will be missed by all who knew him.

Daylight time

From page 9 I don’t know how Mr. Jackman lights his house, but we use electricity. During the months when all communities around us are on daylight time, they are able to conserve electricity for one extra hour in the evening. For instance, when it is getting dark at 10 p.m. in Cranbrook they turn on their lights, but it is only 9 p.m. in Creston and we are turning on our lights. If a family in Cranbrook goes to bed at 11 p.m, it has used one hour of electrical lights before retiring. A family in Creston that retires at 11 p.m. has used two hours of electrical lights. But Mr. Jackman states that there is no economical benefit for Crestonites to have daylight time. Another factor to consider: Many cities and towns across Canada are becoming more aware of conserving resources and striving to become green communities, communities that care about responsible use of energy. Almost all energy bills Canadians receive have an added tax on the use of energy, so making the effort to conserve is responsible and economical. The bottom line? As long as Creston and area refuses the energy saving benefits of daylight time, we will be wasting energy, not conserving, and we will be irresponsible citizens at a time when many are trying to be responsible for our environment and our resources. We will continue to waste energy year after year because some people do not want to be bothered changing their clocks twice a year. Some like to think we are unique. Yes, we are unique in that we are a community that refuses to participate in resource conservation. With the increase in electricity rates upon us, I believe the mayor and council are duty-bound to place the issue of daylight time on the next electoral ballot. I would like to suggest that the question be, “Do you want to save on your electrical bills in future by adopting daylight time?” Yes or No? Gail Bosgra Creston

Donations DO make a difference BE MORE THAN A BYSTANDER Kootenai Community Centre Society (KCCS) regularly receives donations throughout the year from people within and outside of our community. Many people donate because they have been affected by domestic violence in one way or another. It does not always mean that those people have been a victim themselves; it could have been their grandson, their daughter, a friend, a work colleague, a neighbour, their grandmother. At Christmas many people donate with a specific request for which program the money should go to or the type of situation the money will go to, or will ask us to suggest a family or person who could benefit from some extra help over the Holiday season. KCCS provides Stopping the Violence programs by contract, including Irvine House, a Safe Home/Shelter program, Women’s Outreach, and a specialized services for older women. We also offer general advocacy for the community on poverty issues, landlord tenant disputes and other matters. While it is recognized that we cannot share personal details and

information of the recipients and some donors wish to remain anonymous, this generosity within the community still means so much, to so many. The staff at Kootenai Community Centre Society would like to thank everyone who was able to donate in whatever way they could, from money to mittens, socks to self-care products, handmade scarves and throws, toys, food and grocery gift cards to name just a few. The women and families that were able to receive extra help because of your thoughtfulness were able to have a more enjoyable time over the holiday season and have some the stresses of the season reduced. Even if you are not able to donate in person you can always help break the silence on violence by being MORE THAN A BYSTANDER by sharing the message that it is “cool” to respect women and girls and that it is important to speak up if others do not show such respect. For more information please visit www.endingviolence.org and click on the “Be More Than a Bystander” link for ideas on what you can do to help break the silence of violence.

Netrebko, Villazon performing in opera film, Manon BY JULIE EWASHEN

Composed by Jules Massenet and sung in French, the opera Manon premiered in Paris in 1884, with a story set in France during the reign of King Louis XV. In April 2007, the Berlin State Opera production was conducted by Daniel Barenboim, followed by a DVD (with English subtitles), which will be shown with

free admission at the Creston Valley Public Library at 7 p.m. Jan. 25. Anna Netrebko peforms the title role with superb acting and a powerful soprano voice. Her beauty is complemented by the handsome Rolando Villazon, renowned for his mellow tenor and versatile acting. Both have performed in the world’s greatest opera houses to international acclaim — in Berlin, seats sold for 1,000 euros ($1,485).

Manon is an ambivalent character. She plans to become a nun, but while staying at an inn on her journey to the convent she experiences the sin of envy. Three glamorous actresses are flirting with a nobleman there. To Manon, the scene looks exciting, inviting. That’s bad enough, but it gets worse when another man arrives and she falls in love. Worse yet, she later succumbs to the charms of another man, who prom-

ises her a life of ease and wealth. In Berlin, the producer was Vincent Paterson, renowned for videos and music tours featuring Madonna and Michael Jackson. German news media criticized his production of Manon, saying it resembled a pop video. Be that as it may, it would be worth a lot more than a trip to a local venue to hear the singing and witness the acting of Netrebko and Villazon.
