Surrey records third suspicious death of 2014

Homicide in Port Kells not ‘random’

by Kevin Diakiw

HOMICIDE DETECTIVES are continuing to investigate the discov-

ery of a body in Port Kells on Tuesday morning. On Jan. 21., three homes near 189 Street and 92 Avenue were behind police tape. The focus of attention was where a body is believed to have been found inside a parked vehicle in front of a home at 18917 92 Ave. The home is known to police, but not for anything extremely serious, they say. The other homes in the 18800-block of 92 Avenue are also known to police and were behind police tape as well. What, if anything, they have to do with the homicide investigation, is not known. Duscheseneau “We are in the early stages and although the cause of death will have to be confirmed through autopsy, we can say that this incident does not appear to be a random act,” said Cpl. Dominic Duscheseneau of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

Caregiver walks to get the word out Stan Fryer says raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease is just as important as collecting donations by Boaz Joseph

D

uring a chat with a social worker at Surrey Memorial Hospital where he was a volunteer chaplain 14 years ago, Stan Fryer relayed some changes he’d observed in his wife’s behaviour. Shirley was repeating stories, losing items that were obviously around, being anxious about things that hadn’t bothered her before, and wasn’t writing well anymore. “I just noticed little things that had gone on for some time, but which became more prevalent,” he recalls. He was advised by the social worker to get Shirley checked out. In a way, the White Rock couple was lucky. The diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease, was early, allowing the Fryers, both in their early to mid-70s at the time, to make the most of the new journey together. Shirley, aware of the situation, chose to tackle Q Benefits the the situation head-on – seeking treatment, Alzheimer Society of social support, and admitting to people she B.C. met that she had Alzheimer’s, something that other patients often avoid because of stigma. Stan does virtually everything for his wife: The cooking, cleaning, (a maid visits occasionally) and personal care, including bathing and dressing. Nowadays, there’s little in the way of meaningful conversation, and the only television that Shirley will tolerate is hockey. (In previous years, she had accused Stan of changing the channels when commercials came on during a show). “She’s doing well, considering,” says Stan, 88.

Stan Fryer has been the caregiver of his wife Shirley for the last 14 years. Married for 65 years and connected to the Alzheimer Society of B.C. since Shirley was diagnosed in 2000, the two will be honoured at the Jan. 26 Investors Group Walk for Memories in Surrey on Sunday.

High-risk sex offender back in jail Raymond Caissie was living in Surrey after serving 22 years for Abbotsford rape by Sheila Reynolds A HIGH-RISK Abbotsford sex offender who was living in Surrey after

being released from prison last summer is back behind bars. Raymond Lee Caissie, 42, got out of jail last June after serving his full 22-year sentence for the violent sexual assault and unlawful confinement of a 21-year-old museum worker in 1991. The B.C. Corrections Branch issued a warning at the time of his release because he was considered a high-risk offender due to his varied pattern of crime and the fact he’s offended violently and sexually in an opportunistic and impulsive manner. Surrey RCMP said Cassie, who was under bail supervision, has been in custody since Nov. 21, 2013 after failing to report to his probation officer on two occasions earlier in November. Caissie pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault with a weapon and one each of forcible confinement and robbery in connection to the incident on July 21, 1991. It was then that he entered Trethewey House, which housed the Raymond Lee Caissie MSA Museum Society, and encountered a 21-year-old summer student.

He threatened her with a knife, forced her to remove her clothes and sexually assaulted her twice. He then took her to south Abbotsford and across the U.S. border to a secluded wooded area, where he sexually assaulted her, tied her to a tree and left. His conditions upon his release in June included not having contact with his victims, not to possess a knife except for eating and not to have any other weapon or restraint tool, including wire or duct tape. He is also to keep the peace and remain in B.C. When Caissie completed his sentence last year, Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts expressed outrage he was released when he was still considered dangerous even after serving 22 years in prison. His criminal record also includes theft, break and enter and possession of stolen property. According to court files, he has gone by the aliases Brett Alen Stevens, Raymond Lee Carlton and Biran Peele in the past. Caissie appeared in Surrey Provincial Court on Friday (Jan. 17) and is scheduled to appear again Jan. 23. sreynolds@surreyleader.com – with files from Vikki Hopes

Alzheimer Society of B.C., which has organized the event for close to 20 years. Stan volunteered with them for 10 years and was the chairman for five Alzheimer walks in White Rock in past years. In recognition for his service and Shirley’s company, the couple are this year’s honourees at the event. He says there was no way things could have gone so smoothly over the last 14 years without the things they’ve learned from the society. The walk will help get the word out, he says. “I think the awareness is just as important as raising funds.” A lot of the focus, he says, is about early diagnosis and overcoming the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s – some caregivers, for instance, can’t ever adjust to the fact that their spouse has dementia, and the stress takes its toll. “I tell people I really don’t have a lot of patience, what I have is a lot of love. Love takes care of patience.” The Investors Group Walk for Memories takes place Jan. 26 at Eaglequest Golf Course at Coyote Creek (7778 152 St.) Registration starts at 11 a.m. and the event goes from 1-3:30 p.m. For more informa-

Alzheimer facts: • Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and degenerative brain illness, which causes thinking and memory to become seriously impaired. • As the disease advances and affects different areas of the brain, various abilities become impaired resulting in changes to abilities and/ or behaviour. • The average lifespan for people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease is eight to 14 years. • 70,000 people in B.C. are affected by Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. About 10,000 of those are under the age of 65. • Fear and stigma continue to be huge barriers to seeking help. • People with dementia can live meaningful and productive lives with early diagnosis. • Early diagnosis is critical in getting proper medication, education, taking advantage of available support and resources, focusing on life’s priorities and helping to reduce stigma. —Source: Alzheimer Society of B.C.

The truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. Witnesses told police the truck driver had an advance green light for a left turn at the time. The woman was taken to hospital where she died. The next morning, and only blocks away at 139 Street and 104 Avenue, an 81-year-old man, who was reportedly deaf, was struck by a car. The driver who hit him told police the man was jaywalking with his head down. The driver proceeded, expecting the man to stop. He didn’t. The driver swerved to miss the senior, but clipped him with his side mirror. The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Surrey has recently had a high number of motor vehicle accidents causing pedestrian fatalities. In 2013, there were 17 accidents causing a total of 22 fatalities (some involved more than one person). Of those, eight involved pedestrians being struck by vehicles. The figures mean nearly half the traffic

fatalities in Surrey involve pedestrians, a percentage that eclipses the regional average of 30 per cent. Police are aware of the high number of pedestrian incidents and are combatting it with enforcement and education campaigns. our neighbours at our Fleetwood “super mailbox” (should be stupid mailbox). She asked if we had received any mail this past week as she had not – nor had we. We had similar conversations with other neighbours. As luck would have it a postal truck was just driving by and we flagged him down. This is when we were advised that our boxes had been compromised and that our mail was being held. He provided us with a phone number where we were to pick up our mail. If we had not encountered this postal worker, no one in our neighbourhood would have even know this had happened. One would think that supervisors in Canada Post would have the good sense to at least place a notice on our boxes letting us know of the compromise and where we could pick up our mail. Canada Post just lost this customer. We will be changing to e-billing for everything. No wonder they are in the red.

Surrey Food Bank Executive Director Marilyn Herrmann is grateful for the gifts of food, cash, goods-inkind and volunteer time given to the food bank over the Christmas season.

Surrey waste facility owes Metro $145,000 for unlicensed operations by Jeff Nagel ONE OF THE biggest

waste disposal firms in B.C. has been ordered to pay a $145,000 fine for running an unlicensed waste handling facility in Surrey. Super Save Disposal Inc. must pay the fine to Metro Vancouver’s sewerage and drainage district. The Langley-based firm pleaded guilty in provincial court to one charge of running an unlicensed transfer station or material recovery facility. Super Save had been repeatedly warned by Metro bylaw enforcement officers that a licence was required for its operation in Surrey at 19388 92 Avenue but continued to run it for more than 14 months. According to Metro, the four-acre site contained household

items, construction and demolition waste, as well as salvaged materials such as metals, wood and tires. jnagel@surreyleader.com

the fifth was in the Interior and there are none officially listed in the Lower Mainland. According to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, there are about 49 patients hospitalized in intensive care units with severe influenza. Sixteen of them are in the Fraser Health region and 10 are on Vancouver Island. But officials say the number of deaths understate the true scope of H1N1 flu fatalities because patients hospitalized with flulike symptoms – even those who die – are not generally lab tested for a final confirmation. “Most deaths from influenza will probably not have influenza identified,” said Dr. Reka Gustafson, a medical health officer with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. As a result, she said it’s “not a meaningful exercise” to focus on the number of deaths or hospitalizations as that can give a false impression that influenza is less severe.

What I don’t always talk about is the great on-road driving capabilities. The Toyota 4Runner hugs the road and the bucket seats hug you. It is very comfortable to drive and you feel safe driving it. The suspension and shocks give you a firm ride but not enough to give you that washboard effect. Vision while driving is superb, with little to no blind spots. The thick steering wheel and responsive steering makes you feel like you are driving a car. Verdict The Toyota 4Runner could be on just about everybody’s wish list, given its on and off-road capabilities.

DETROIT – As goes the North American International Auto Show, so goes the industry to which it provides high profile. Every year at this time, journalists from around the world descend in their thousands on this former industrial powerhouse, now economically depressed Michigan city. The Driveway team has just returned and we all agreed there was an air of optimism on the show floor that we haven’t witnessed for some years. Representatives of the Big Four domestic manufacturers believe they have turned the corner and the fellow scribes appear to agree that the North American brands have been revitalized. Today in print and online, we each pick five vehicles that caught our eye. Yours truly has been a fan of Honda’s premium Acura brand. All solid performers but in recent years the design team has let the range down with uninspiring looks. The 2015 Acura TLX Prototype unveiling suggests the team is out of its uninspiring funk. This performance-luxury sedan, which will launch this summer, looks fresh and sporty. It will replace the TL and the TSX and will be the design leader as new models are revealed during the next few years. TLX customers will be able to choose from two-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations; two high-performance, highly fuel-efficient new engines – 2.4-litre and 3.5-litre V6s; two new advanced transmissions; continued on page 24

inline four-cylinder, generating 272 horses, and a 3.6-litre V6, 321 hp is also available. Interesting little feature: because coupes typically have large, long doors, the reach behind the shoulder to grab the seatbelt can be a stretch. The ATS Coupe has motorized carriers to “hand” the seatbelt to the driver and front passenger upon entry. The Toyota FT-1 coupe concept caused a stir among those hungering for a return to the days of the Toyota Celica/Supra. Company officials were coy about whether it will go into production but judging by the media attention it will. The Volkswagen Beetle Dune has a rugged off-road look, largely due to the raising of the body by 50 mm and the addition of 19-inch wheels with large tyres. Just like the old days, the new Beetle features a rear-mounted ski-rack. The concept is actually a return to an idea from January 2000, when VW showed the New Beetle Dune concept in Los Angeles. That was a flight fancy, this concept is built on the current production model and the German manufacturer is looking for the nod to proceed from Beetle buyers.

Curb lane crazies 1

When you head out today count how many times, a car zips up right behind you then cuts into the curb lane to pass. What makes it so fascinating for me is that invariably the lane to the left is free yet they can’t resist the urge to curb. While most of us are happy to pass sensibly on the left and leave that lane for slow-pokes, old folks and parked cars, they insist on turning it into their own private race track.

What drives-u-crazy.

Hawks fill the net against visiting Ice Major Midget League team sweeps Kootenay 8-1, 6-0 by Rick Kupchuk A VISIT BY the last-

place Kootenay Ice gave the Valley West Hawks a chance to end a six-game winless streak, and the home team took full advantage. The Hawks thumped the Ice 8-1 and 6-0 in a two-game set last weekend at the Langley Events Centre for their first victories

of 2014. Valley West had gone 0-3-1 at the Mac’s tournament in Calgary over the holiday break, then were swept by the Vancouver Canadians when the B.C. Hockey Major Midget League schedule resumed Jan. 11. The Hawks jumped on Kootenay quickly with four first-period goals on Saturday. They added four more

in the third frame. Ty Westgard of White Rock, Matt Bradley, Justin Wilde, Mitch Newsome and Paul Savage of Surrey, Jordan Funk of Cloverdale, and Langley’s Spencer Gerth and Luke Gingras were the goal scorers for Valley West. Langley forwards Jesse Lansdell and Eric Callegari had two assists each. Callegari netted

two goals in Sunday’s contest, in which the Hawks again scored four unanswered first-period goals. Westgard, Savage, Landsdell and Funk tallied once each with Bradley, Gingras and Newsome collecting two assists apiece. Now at 19-10-1 (won-lost-tied) on the season, Valley West will face-off against the Vancouver Giants

for two games next weekend. The Giants are tied for first place with the Okanagan

Rockets at 23-4-1, and will host the first game Saturday night at the Burnaby Winter

Club. The rematch is Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.

The Ford F-150 Success Story

hen someone’s personal anecdote jives with statistical record, there may be a tendency to regard relevant ‘stats’ as validated and memorable. Take this reported anecdote for example: “While fuelling up at a rural gas station on Vancouver Island a few days ago on a stay-inyour-vehicle, stare–out-the-window weather day, as the minutes ticked by it gradually became apparent that every passing truck on the adjacent highway was a Ford F-150.” Pure coincidence perhaps, but, last week, when Ford’s announcement at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit of big changes coming to the F-150 included recitation of the truck’s history and sales statistics, the anecdote backdrop gave the statistics even more significance. Media reports based on Associated Press feeds recited the following: “F-Series trucks have been the bestselling vehicles in the U.S. for the last 32 years; last year, Ford sold an F-Series every 41 seconds. Ford makes an estimated $10,000 US profit on every F-Series truck it sells. Michael Robinet, the managing director of IHS’s automotive group, says the trucks account for about a third of the company’s revenue in North America — $80 billion US in 2012.” This information leads to a “what’s next” story and all the attendant questions. ‘Aluminum’ is the big change—20 times more than on most vehicles. Innovations introduced by Alcoa Inc., one of Ford’s

suppliers, involve pretreating aluminum to make it more durable when parts are bonded together which in turn allows for fewer rivets to join parts. Aluminum will make up 97% of the F-150 body, reducing the weight of the now 2,200-kilogram vehicle by up to 300 kilograms. Less weight means more fuel efficiency. Aluminum does not corrode significantly and tends to be dent resistant. And because the frame will still be made of high-strength steel, there will be no loss of towing strength. Likewise, acceleration and deceleration rates will be, at least, unaffected and more likely improved. In announcing this change, Alan Mulally, Ford’s president and CEO, told Associated Press that, “You’re either moving ahead and you’re improving and you’re making it more valuable and more useful to the customer or you’re not.” Indeed. Industry analysts are convinced that Ford would not be doing this if it had any doubts about this innovation “not working.” Michael Robinet said, “Ford had to make a change, since its trucks were heavier than competitors’, hurting their fuel efficiency. Ford, which has been selling F-Series trucks since 1948, also has a deep understanding of its customer. They would not roll the dice on this if they felt it wasn’t going to work.” The effect on pricing appears not to be an issue. Ford’s truck marketing chief, Doug Scott, was quoted as saying that the F series will stay within its current price range of $24,000 US to $50,000 US. The expected reduction in both recycling costs from having less metal to recycle and in the manufacturing costs of the engine and other components—having less weight to move will slim them down—should enable Ford to hold the line despite the costs inevitably involved in such a significant innovative change.

basketball program won a pair of key games last weekend, giving a boost to the playoff hopes of both the men’s and women’s team. The KPU Eagles men defeated the Douglas College Royals 66-61 in New Westminster Friday night, before losing 88-39 to the Langara Falcons Saturday in Vancouver. Although the win was just the second of the season for the Eagles, their 2-10 (won-lost) record leaves them one game back of the sixth-place Camosun Chargers in the Pacific Western Athletic Conference (PACWEST) standings. Ali Bosir, a graduate of Princess Margaret Secondary scored 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Devin Haynes, another fifth year forward, added 17 points and six rebounds for the Eagles, who never trailed in the game. Saturday in Vancouver, Haynes with 11 points and rookie guard Obi Udevi of Surrey with 10 were the leading scorers. Udevi was the top rebounder with 12. “We got a much needed split this weekend,” said Eagles head coach Stefon Wilson. “We rebounded the ball and played solid defense. (But) we must execute and shoot the ball better on the offensive end of the court.” The women lost their first game of the weekend, 60-39 to the Royals before topping Langara 44-39. They are now tied with the Capilano Blues for sixth place at 4-8. Fleetwood Park graduate Shilpa Khyanna was the top scorer for KPU in the win, tallying 17 points to

Quest From page 31 go with three assists. Christina Brown with 13 points and AmberLee Kavanagh with 12 rebounds also contributed to the victory. “We brought a ton of energy to Langara on Saturday night and we did a good job on the offensive boards,” said KPU head coach Dan Nayebzadeh. The two Eagles teams will play a pair of home games this weekend, with the Capilano Blues the visitors on Friday night and the Quest Kermodes of Squamish visiting the KPU Surrey campus on Saturday. Game times both nights are 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men. Friday night’s women’s game is a fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundations’s (CBCF) B.C./Yukon chapter. Pink T-shirts will be sold to spectators for $10, and ribbons, pens and bracelets will be sold by donation. Fans can also bid on silent auction items and donate their game-night admission to CBCF. “The women’s team deserves a lot of credit for putting this together,” said David Kent, KPU’s new director of recreation and athletics. “In my experience, student athletes don’t have a lot of time to spare, but they made the time for this because it’s important.”

Devils: Defeat Mission From page 30

Brett Mackey notched the game-winning goal with a little more than a minute to play. Stratford and Jayden Gill were the other scorers. Brenden Sharp stopped 36 of 38 Mission shots in his first start of the season in goal for North Delta. The Devils visit the North Vancouver Wolf Pack Saturday night in North Vancouver, and face-off with the Grandview Steelers Sunday evening in Burnaby.

children born to Peter and Maria

Unger. His formative years were spent growing up on a farm near Brooks, Alberta, where he had close childhood friends going through the educational system. In particular, he and the late Rick Glover shared many youthful experiences together. Pete loved the farm-life and could sometimes be heard singing loudly while driving the John Deere tractor out in the field. After high school Pete attended survey classes at Olds College and took employment as a surveyor shortly thereafter. He very much enjoyed the outdoor aspect of survey work and spoke fondly of his experiences while employed in that career. In 1988 Pete visited family in Vancouver and took up residence in the warmer climate of British Columbia. There he worked in shipping and receiving until taking retirement in 2013. It was in British Columbia that Pete could be seen every weekend at the Horse Races, a pastime he enjoyed greatly and in which he became very knowledgeable. Pete moved back to Alberta in June 2013 remarking that at heart he was still a ‘Prairie Boy’. Pete is survived by his parents Peter Unger of Oliver, British Columbia, and Maria Unger of Surrey, British Columbia; and his siblings Erwin Unger, Jacob Henry Unger, Jeanne Sue Ann Blair (David), Victor Unger, Gerhardt (George) Unger, Cindy Marie Rebiffe (Jeff), & Robert Unger. No service is planned, but a reception for family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Speargrass Golf Community (42 Wyndham Park Way, Carseland, Alberta, T0J 0M0) at 2:00 p.m. To send condolences, please visit; www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca
