What I don’t always talk about is the great on-road driving capabilities. The Toyota 4Runner hugs the road and the bucket seats hug you. It is very comfortable to drive and you feel safe driving it. The suspension and shocks give you a firm ride but not enough to give you that washboard effect. Vision while driving is superb, with little to no blind spots. The thick steering wheel and responsive steering makes you feel like you are driving a car.

Motor City looking to a brighter future By Keith Morgan
DETROIT – As goes the North American International Auto Show, so goes the industry to which it provides high profile. Every year at this time, journalists from around the world descend in their thousands on this former industrial powerhouse, now economically depressed Michigan city. The Driveway team has just returned and we all agreed there was an air of optimism on the show floor that we haven’t witnessed for some years. Representatives of the Big Four domestic manufacturers believe they have turned the corner and the fellow scribes appear to agree that the North American brands have been revitalized. Today in print and online, we each pick five vehicles that caught our eye. Yours truly has been a fan of Honda’s premium Acura brand. All solid performers but in recent years the design team has let the range down with uninspiring looks. The 2015 Acura TLX Prototype unveiling suggests the team is out of its uninspiring funk. This performance-luxury sedan, which will launch this summer, looks fresh and sporty. It will replace the TL and the TSX and will be the design leader as new models are revealed during the next few years. TLX customers will be able to choose from two-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations; two high-performance, highly
fuel-efficient new engines – 2.4-litre and 3.5-litre V6s; two new advanced transmissions; and the next generation Acura Super-Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) and Precision All-Wheel Steer (PAWS) dynamic performance and handling technologies. The Volkswagen Beetle Dune has a rugged off-road look, largely due to the raising of the body by 50 mm and the addition of 19-inch wheels with large tyres. Just like the old days, the new Beetle features a rear-mounted ski-rack. The concept is actually a return to an idea from January 2000, when VW showed the New Beetle Dune concept in Los Angeles. That was a flight fancy, this concept is built on the current production model and the German manufacturer is looking for the nod to proceed from Beetle buyers.

Five cars to drive while you still have a pulse By Rob Sass
With baby boomers seemingly more aware of their own mortality these days, “bucket lists” of things to do before one’s demise have become increasingly popular. Here are five of the cars everybody should drive before kicking the bucket, taking the big dirt nap, biting the dust or, well, you get the idea: 1. 1967 Corvette L88: The L88 was the Corvette that ordinary civilians weren’t supposed to be able to buy. Rather, it was built to be taken racing by “privateers” (GM was still observing a ban on manufacturer supported racing). Although a regular production option, the L88 was expensive and came with almost no creature
comforts. The horsepower was deliberately underrated on the option sheet to come in below the regular 427-cubic-inch 435-hp engine to further discourage Average Joe buyers. In reality, the L88 could make over 500 hp on racing fuel. Acceleration was shattering. It’s the ultimate classic Corvette Sting Ray. 2. 1967 Shelby Cobra 427: Carroll Shelby found that there was almost no spindly little British sports car that couldn’t be improved with the insertion of an American V-8. Under Shelby’s direction, the Sunbeam Alpine became the Sunbeam Tiger, and the AC Ace became the vaunted Shelby Cobra. The baddest version of the Cobra sported a 427-cubic-inch engine that was similar to

the one developed for NASCAR. Cobras are hot, noisy and cramped, but they’re really the greatest expression of the muscle car ethos—cram the largest pos1967 Shelby Cobra 427 sible engine into the smallest much a fashion accessory as a car. www.eldoradokelowna.com Aside from a working chassis, tires and vital mechanical components, this 15,000-pound truck was completely made of ice. The unusual creation was prompted by the retailer’s desire to test out the MotoMaster Eliminator Ultra battery, which is designed to work in the frigid temperatures many Canadian drivers experience. As part of the Tested for Life project the battery was chilled to -40°C, to drive the ice truck and prove its strength. The ice truck and battery is featured in a Canadian Tire television advertisement, which premiered on January 1 during the 2014 Winter Classic. A full “behind-the-scenes” documentary on the ice truck challenge can be viewed online. Go to YouTube. com and search Canadian Tire Ice Truck. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Drives-U-Crazy CURB LANE CRAZIES 2
When you head out today count how many times, a car zips up right behind you then cuts into the curb lane to pass. What makes it so fascinating for me is that invariably the lane to the left is free yet they can’t resist the urge to curb. While most of us are happy
driveway.ca
to pass sensibly on the left and leave that lane for slow-pokes, old folks and parked cars, they insist on turning it into their own private race track. What drives-u-crazy. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
Black ice, which is commonly found on roads with shaded areas, bridges and overpasses, is one of the most challenging road hazards at this time of year and that’s why it’s so important to slow down and try to anticipate
what’s ahead. If you hit ice, ease off the accelerator to slow your vehicle down and regain traction. Remember, breaking could make the situation worse.

Alexandra Straub For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!” Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby. Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit. Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can find her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive. When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either find her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world. While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. And to really help her relax, she scrapbooks. Share your thoughts and requests with Alexandra at alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Detroit - Flocks of international journalists roamed the floors of COBO Hall in downtown Detroit on the occasion of the 25th annual North American International Auto Show. With a plethora of automotive goodness under one roof, it’s hard to narrow down which ones to focus on. After all, there are concepts, production vehicles and much more. And there are a lot of them. To kick things off on my list, let’s start with some concepts. Ah, MINIs. For over a decade, they have been romping the streets and causing people to smile, whether driving them, sitting in them or watching them. At the NAIAS, the masses were introduced to the MINI John Cooper Works Concept. Not a whole heck of a lot of information was released but you can bet your bottom dollar that it’ll be fast. There are large air inlets, 18-inch wheels and the unmistakable MINI silhouette and face. It’s built as much for the road as it AM Ford is pleased to welcome is the track. Lots of ‘ooh-aah, what a car’ at Detroit show. continued from page 10
Up front, the Fit sports a new grille and headlight design. Around back, there are rear reflectors and LED taillights run along the hatch with a chrome tailgate garnish and rear diffuser. Furthermore, Honda keep’s their exclusive Magic Seat, which offer multiple configurable seating positions. Translation, the Fit provides an unrivaled 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space when the second row seats are folded flat. It also gets a bump in horses. Included is an all-new direct-injected 1.5-liter DOHC iVTEC engine producing 130 horsepower and 114 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s an increase of 13 horsepower and 8 lb.-ft. of torque in com-
parison to the outgoing engine. The VW Golf R is no stranger to Canadians. It has been sold here in the Great White North for the last couple of years. But they’re kind of like the tooth fairy. You hear about them, but you rarely see them. Why? Because they were sold in limited quantities. Meaning only a few hundred were allocated for Canada. But I’m hoping such is not the case with the upcoming 2015 Golf R. Making its debut at the show, you can liken it to a donut. A donut that is fat free, calorie free and has sprinkles on top. Yes, it’s just that delicious. The all-wheel drive 5-door has plenty of appeal. But with the option of outfitting it with a 6-speed DSG with paddle shifters (it was previously only available with a 6-speed
manual,) it might just reach out to a few more takers. That’s if we can get our hands on them. Oh, and there’s an allotment of 290 horsepower, too. Yum. Speaking of cars with four cylinders and all-wheel drive, KIA GT4 Stinger Concept the Golf R has some and a six-speed gearbox, those looking to competition lined up in the form of the Subatake shortcuts off the beaten path can do it. ru WRX STI. And do it in style. With a 305 horsepower horizontally-opalexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca posed turbocharged boxer engine, multi-differential controllable all-wheel-drive system,
nice suprise Rear camera and backup warning system provide the “all clear”.
All-Wheel-Drive that puts power to the wheels based on road conditions.
Available 260hp turbocharged 2.0L GDI inline 4 engine. Puts the sport in Sportage.
Many compact SUVs sacrifice power for fuel consumption. But here in the Kootenays, we need to pass on hills and climb the steepest passes with confidence. Technology in the Kia Sportage generates big power from a smaller, highly efficient engine. So you get power when you need it – and it doesn’t cost you when you don’t.

Five cars to drive while you still have a pulse the 930) is probably the one most capable of preventing the fulfillment of one’s automotive bucket list. Early 930s were somewhat diabolical cars with tires that were a bit too small and a turbocharger that lit up suddenly and with a vengeance. The turbo’s abrupt nature could make for scary driving at inopportune times (like the apex of a corner). But it’s the car’s ability to bite back that can make it so much fun and a genuine accomplishment to master. 5. 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Hemi Superbird: The Superbird appeals to anyone with a “stick it to the man” sensibility. of the car’s somewhat minimalist nature, and the fact that it was offered only with a conventional three-pedal manual transmission, posers didn’t apply. It’s a reasonable certainty that Kanye West doesn’t own an F1. With three seats and a center driving position, plus reams of Formula One technology and incredible performance (0-60 in 3.2 seconds, ¼ mile in 11.6 and a top speed of 241 mph), the F1 is the one supercar that should be on any automotive bucket list. 4. 1976 Porsche 930: Of all the cars on this list, the earliest version of the Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera (otherwise known as

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week January 24, 2014
Tip of the Week: The cycle of Aquarius is underway (Jan 19 – Feb 18). The noticeable increasing hours of daylight is a sign of it. The cycle of the Earth around the Sun, or the apparent path of the Sun, both ‘true’ from different points of view, reveals this very particular and rhythmic distribution of sunlight. This is true everywhere in the world, though less so near and at the equator and has always been and will always be. This intimate relationship between the Earth and Sun determines what season, month, day and time it is. The Moon lends an important contributing factor as well. The calendars and clocks used all over the world are based on these natural, fundamental measures. It determines the celebration of the precise moment of New Year every year. Of course, the division of the year by Time Zone designated by Greenwich and the International Date Line means that due to the rotation of our planet, there are 24 times zones based on the 24 hours of the day, the 360 degree circle divided into segments of 15 degrees of longitude each. Despite the fact that modern technology provides artificial light, the annular and seasonal distribution of light remains consistent. We are also psychologically and spiritually influenced by the rhythmic and cyclic flow of sunlight. Western Astrology works on the basis of this intimate and pervasive relationship our planet shares with its host star. The division of the year by 12 gives us the 12 ‘Signs’. As well as archetypes in themselves, these are illustrated and experienced as the seasonal flow, steadily changing yet rhythmic distribution of the sun’s light, change in weather, organic cycle, animal migrations and more. The Sun in Aquarius means that we have entered the month of mid-winter here in the Northern Hemisphere. Beyond even our precious clocks and calendars, the annual, rhythmic, natural ‘signs’ are self-evident.

‘The times are a changin’ and you are certainly taking a lead once again. At worst, this may be disruptive, both within you and close to home and thereby affecting familial relationships. There is a revolutionary momentum underway here that will peak in mid-February and carry on into March. Accept the changing status quo and be extra cooperative especially at home. You are fully in the limelight now. Yet, do you want all the attention you are getting? Making the most of it, seek favours and earned rewards and any other kind of recognition that you do want. Opportunities to improve, repair and heal performances, things and relationships, are also coming to the fore. Take a commanding lead for best results. Your sights are set on creating a brighter future. You know that to achieve this some things have got to change. It is likely that this process has already begun both within you and in certain outer circumstances as well. Connections with unique, innovative and progressive people are a source of inspiration. Aim to merge minds and visions into a new creative synthesis. As this week gets underway you find yourself in a deep mood. The needs and concerns of others, perhaps the world in general, is weighing in. This is provoking changes within you and is affecting your home, family, associations and professional relationships too. The deeper meanings of security and power are under review. Some nights are darker than others. Sometimes the dark implies experiences that are heavy and difficult to bear while at others it is peaceful and restorative. Either way, a new day is dawning. This is stimulating you to more fully appreciate your relationships with family, friends, and professional associations. Above all, focus on your own healthy self-regard and inner allegiance. The Sun in Aquarius is activating an inventive streak. At least you will be inspired to do something different, to alter your habits and routines. Your ambitions are deeper than usual. Yet part of the answer includes variety and play. New information producing fresh perspectives and approaches should do the trick. Aim to be extra open-minded.

You are in a playful, sporting and provocative mood. You want to connect with others and they want to engage you too. Establishing a more efficient flow at home is featured. Blending beauty with function feels right. Taking calculated risks and making key investments to increase public and/or professional opportunities is your core goal. A steady flow of change in your lifestyle, especially noticeable over the past few years, is set to undergo yet another shift. Your vocation and health are important factors influencing your choices. This one comes with an added measure of challenge. A revision in some of your more important relationships may be required to improve the quality and equality of exchange. Your social index is on the rise. Amidst an increased ‘to-do’ list, you are happy to meet and greet friends new and old. Now is a good time to dress for success. At deeper levels, the three constants of life: sex, death and/or taxes, may be extra prevalent now. With this cycle of added social stimulation, focus to enhance your sex appeal for increased opportunity. A window of opportunity has opened. Increased support of all kinds should be available. You may have to ask but you will probably receive. Overindulgence is the main culprit to overcome. Excess could prove extra costly now. If necessary, acknowledge and break free of obsessive thoughts and deeds. Make the most of this window and ask respectfully. The time has come to be more assertive and advance your position somehow. As important as it is to take a few risks now, balance deliberate action with good judgement in your dealings with others. It may be necessary to draw a clear line between business and pleasure. Fortunately, your intuitions are running extra high now so make full use of them. A busy and productive time behind the scenes is likely now. The key to your success includes seclusion. Your ambitions are probably running high now so this is a good time to get ahead. It is also a good time to ask for support. Family and friends will likely be more cooperative, even supportive and you may also get more positive response for employers and new clients.

Entertainment Dr. Fun returns to Silverton
The historical and acoustically fabulous Memorial Hall in Silverton will shake and shimmy on Saturday, February 1 as dancers work out to the rocking blues licks of Clinton Swanson and Friends, No Excuse and Dr. Fun. This party is BC’s longest running blues boogie, and the 22nd anniversary event promises to be among the best parties ever. Legendary sax man Clinton Swanson’s five piece group featuring dynamic female vocalist Sydney Black is guaranteed to get the eager crowd on its feet from the first downbeat. He has dazzled the Boogie crowd for the past two years with his big horn swing band, The Back Eddies, just one of his many bands to perform in the Kootenay region. Clinton Swanson and Friends is his raucous blues band that plays the Saturday night dance scene in Nelson. If you can’t dance to this music, you can at least marvel at the ki-

netics he compels on the dance floor. No Excuse has inspired Boogieholics for several years with its hard driving dual guitars, versatile keyboard and explosive rhythm section. Stepping up as new lead vocalist is their last year’s background singer Leanne Harrison, a veteran performer of rock and swing since the early eighties. Several band members were formerly with Dr. Fun and the Nightcrawlers, the original Boogie headliner band. Gary “Dr Fun” Gilbert is presently living on BC’s Sunshine Coast. He and his Nightcrawlers played the first Winter Blues Boogie in 1993, and incited the crowd for the next 16 years. The Boogie is a benefit; all proceeds to support our local pre-school. We offer a bar, snacks and beverages. You must be 19 or over to attend. For information, call Dick or Barbara at 250358-7765 or email yeomansb@netidea. com.
