Kerr and Mason say it was a seemingly contentious issue when the idea was first floated about putting the Safe Shelter downtown. However, consultations were held with the public, business community and authorities to address their concerns before the converted shipping container arrived, and the plan also had the support of council. After three short months, the pilot project is viewed as a success story. An average of 10-11 people sleep there every night and it’s also a low-barrier shelter. Low-barrier means people who are impaired by alcohol or drugs can spend the night. And that’s different than the Salvation Army’s permanent shelter in Campbell River, Evergreen House, where you are turned away if you show up “under the influence.” “As long as they’re no danger to themselves, others and staff, they can stay,” says Pastor Art van Holst of the Radiant Life Church which has the contract to manage and staff the Safe House. “Ambulance and police both think this is good, and the fire department is right next door – you know where they’re going to be…this is where they hang out.” It costs $10,000 a month to staff the shelter with the money coming from Family Services which received a one-time grant from the Island health authority. Campbell River will have to scramble to find money to fund next winter’s low-barrier Safe Shelter (see story on page 4), but money shouldn’t be a problem in the much larger city of Abbotsford, figures Const. Walker. “We’re a very giving community – this shouldn’t be a city responsibility, it should be the whole community,” says the officer who likes the idea of a safe place for those who need

No money for shelter for next winter So far, it’s been a successful first season for the downtown Safe Shelter pilot project, but what about next winter? “As of April 1, we’re back to square one,” admits Paul Mason of Campbell River Family Services. The Safe Shelter is on loan from Shadow Lines Transportation Group of Langley which converted the shipping container. The rest of the project’s funding came through

a one-time grant from Island Health (formerly VIHA). Mason isn’t sure where the money will come from for next season, but he’s been advocating for years to build a permanent low-barrier shelter in the city, particularly for men. Men and women can stay at the Safe Shelter, but not far away is the new Rose Harbour apartment. It’s also lowbarrier, notes Mason,

As an example, Family Services monitored one homeless client, with addiction issues, who cost the health system approximately $200,000 in one year for hospital admissions alone. “When we help more people help themselves, everyone wins,” he says.

Having the machine will also relieve some of the pressure on the busy endoscopy unit which performs 10 procedures a day, five days a week. The machine will be the second one of its kind at the hospital which means one machine will be able to remain in the endoscopy unit at all times. Currently, the machine has to be transported up to the Operating Room and Intensive Care Units if needed, disrupting the list of patients in the endoscopy unit waiting for a scope. “Now that we do endoscopy five days a week, our list is on average 10-12 cases a day, five days a week, plus on-call services,” said Drover, clinical co-ordinator for surgical services at Campbell River Hospital. “Just having it here – it’s fantastic.” Lottery proceeds will also go towards the purchase of a rotating Intensive Care Unit (ICU) bed, which among other things, helps to prevent bed sores in patients. The beds provide continual rotation to help decrease the chance of a patient getting pneumonia or pulmonary complications while bed

ridden. The bed can also be converted into what’s called a cardiac chair, which helps patients to sit up. The bed is aimed at reducing the length of a patient’s hospital stay by promoting progressive mobilization before they are physically able to stand, said Stacey Marsh, executive director of the Hospital Foundation. “The bed can sit up for them, so when they’re going to try to walk again, they’re not going from lying flat on their back for a week to getting out of bed,” Marsh said. While the hospital, and its patients, are the ultimate beneficiaries of the lottery, those who purchase tickets have a one in 5,000 chance of winning one of three prizes. The grand prize is a $20,000 travel voucher to fly anywhere in the world; second prize is a two nights stay at Sonora Resort, valued at $3,600; and third prize is a backyard barbecue package, valued at $1,200. Tickets are $40 each or three for $100 and must be purchased in B.C. The SPCA is one step closer to securing a new home after getting the seal of approval from council. Stephanie Arkwright, manager of Campbell River’s SPCA branch, told council at its Tuesday meeting that the SPCA intends to rent space from the Association Francophone de Campbell River, which owns the building at 891 13th Avenue. “We felt it would not only be a positive relationship between us and the French Association but it would also be the right amount of space that we were hoping to operate out of, which is approximately 1,800 square feet,” Arkwright said. “There are no immediate neighbours other than the French Association and we would have a completely blocked in outside yard. The location is easily accessible; it’s central and would also bring new exposure to this particular area of town.” The SPCA plans to

open an animal adoption and education centre, a smaller-scale model compared to the former animal shelter on Merecroft Road. Arkwright said similar centres in other B.C. communities have been very successful and have not generated any complaints from outlying businesses. Arkwright acknowledged that the two biggest concerns with such a facility are cleanliness and noise. She assured council that SPCA staff and volunteers would clean multiple times a day to eliminate odours and keep the facility sanitary. As for noise, Arkwright said barking dogs would mostly be kept inside. “The small number of

Dogs outside will be in our enclosed back yard for exercise and socialization as well as bathroom breaks but will be accompanied by staff and volunteers,” Arkwright said. “Our goal is to have dogs that are available for adoption, in foster homes, and have a few dogs at the centre during business hours. “The primary focus of the centre will be to take in and adopt out cats and kittens and small animals such as rabbits, guinea

pigs, mice, domestic rats, and a small number of dogs and/or puppies,” Arkwright added. “We will house the animals temporarily until they can be adopted or transferred.” Council, impressed by the presentation and eager to have the SPCA re-established in the city, passed first and second reading of a bylaw amendment in order to accommodate the SPCA’s re-location, and in doing so triggered a public hearing which will be held in council chambers.

A good handle on literacy can lead to better communication, and will increase the chances of landing a better job. Unfortunately, there are people among us who never quite grasped the written language. There are parents

who can’t decipher letters from the teacher, and grandparents who can’t read to their grandchildren. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Next Monday is Family Literacy Day. It’s a day to celebrate all things written, and spoken, with the ones you love. So, grab a book and read it to your children. Offer a journal and a pen to your teen. Help a young adult revise a cover letter, or encourage a parent to hit the books. Because it’s never too late to learn. – Black Press

Re: Out on a limb – “In the news: Sewers, old farts and car parks” – Mirror Jan. 24 by Alistair Taylor Well, I won’t call you a heretic, but I strongly disagree with you that our outdoor pool should be closed. Interesting that on the opposite page from your editorial was an impassioned plea from the campbell river salmon kings. Have you been to the outdoor pool in the summer and seen the kids enjoying this pool? With all the money that our council wastes on projects that are often done wrong (case in point: recent road construction downtown mistake on corner), I am sure we can find in our budget money to repair our only outdoor pool. Interesting thought to ponder: Were this facility in willow point, would we consider closing it? We are the inner city and for a lot of our kids, this pool is the only outing they will get in the summer. We will see what our council does with this one. I think I can guess at which of our esteemed councillors will have compassion and which will not. I read your column diligently Alistair, always enjoy your perspective and insight. Neil Young’s anti-oilsands concert tour was the perfect distillation of the American enviro-assault on its dependent northern neighbour that’s been going on for a decade or more. After touring Fort McMurray in his electric car with actor-turned-protester Daryl Hannah, the 68-year-old Young covered all the big propaganda hits and added his own fantasy facts. It looks like a war zone up there! Hiroshima! If it keeps going it will be like the Moon! There’s no reclamation! Tar sands oil is all going to China, and that’s why their air is so bad! All of those statements are false. And then Young dropped his own nuclear bomb, claiming cancer rates in Fort Chipewyan are 30 per cent higher than, well, somewhere else. Chief Allan

Adam of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation has cited a discredited study by former community doctor John O’Connor to press the same claim. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta reviewed O’Connor’s claims in 2009. It concluded that “Dr. O’Connor made a number of inaccurate or untruthful claims” about cancer patients, and then refused to provide patient information after his claims made international news. Retired professor David Schindler toured with Young and continued to push the health scare, referring darkly to newer research showing increased mercury and PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) contamination. When you peel back the propaganda and journalistic hype, these studies

mainly reveal that such toxins are on the rise, but are found in much higher concentrations around large cities where fuel is consumed. The cancer claims were then debunked by a Royal Society of Canada expert panel in 2010. This cancer scare is the most damaging and dishonest part of the selective attack on Alberta. The oil industry, politicians and most of the media seem unwilling to examine it critically. Climate scientist-turned-politician Andrew Weaver was at Young’s Toronto news conference. He says there were no questions for him, Adam or Young’s other validator, David Suzuki, who previously worked with Schindler on a slanted oilsands documentary for the CBC. Weaver calculates that Young’s claim about greenhouse gas emissions

is substantially correct, if you include emissions from the finished fuels. Weaver refused any comment on the cancer claims. Young included the obligatory sneering comparison between Stephen Harper and George W. Bush, which is another sign he’s lived in California too long. He seemed unaware that the NDP’s Thomas Mulcair and Liberal leader Justin Trudeau support continued oilsands development. As for moonscapes, Young could have driven his famous electric Lincoln from his Redwood City mansion on a hill to nearby Bakersfield, to view the greasy expanses of closely packed pumpjacks reaching to the horizon, still expanding due to hydraulic fracturing.

Young could have visited North Dakota, where the second shale oil train explosion luckily didn’t kill anyone. It seems there will be no remake of Young’s classic Kent State lament dedicated to 47 Dead in Old Quebec. That’s American oil, so no protests. Chief Adam was frank in an interview on CTV about using the “Honour the Treaties” tour to strengthen his legal position. Young’s concert tour put $75,000 in his fund to pay lawyers. Oil isn’t the only thing being extracted here. By the end of the tour Sunday, Young and Adam conceded they weren’t trying to shut the Athabasca oilsands down, just start a dialogue. Thanks to uncritical media coverage, there will no doubt be discussions at dinner tables and in classrooms all over the world about the terrible Alberta tar sands and the cancer they don’t actually cause. Filed for publication with the Mirror Dear Premier Clarke, I am a Quadra Islander. My ferry route is my marine highway and should be included in the transportation infrastructure, just as ferries are treated in the rest of the world. I help pay for highways, bridges, tunnels and free ferries in the rest of BC. I should not have to pay 85 per cent of the cost of my ferry in fares. It is shocking that BC Ferries has one manager for every six employees, to a total of 600 managers recently receiving large bonuses, and 450 of those managers receiving pay of $200,000 per year. It is shocking that BCF will pay David Hahn $300,000 per year for the rest of his life, and that the current CEO gets much more than that, along with two pensions and a vehicle allowance. It is shocking that directors make $100,000 for part-time work.

It is shocking that the single biggest BC Ferries cost is servicing its debt, debt incurred by Fast Cat ferries and other examples of mismanagement. It is shocking that on April 1, 2014, 7,000 sailings will be slashed and passenger fares will be increased beyond the already 135 per cent increase in the last ten years. Cuts to ferries, as well as fares increases, will result in the departure of many island community members even though many of these communities were in existence before many other towns in B.C. Premier Clarke, I implore you to scrap this unworkable B.C. Coastal Ferries Act of 2003. Roll ferries into highways, pick up capital costs at a cheaper government rate, and then cover operation costs. Fares can then be reduced, schedules maintained, seniors respected, tourists enticed and businesses encouraged. Joyce Baker

Regarding your article on a new formula for methadone (“Changes coming for a ‘life-saving’ drug” – Mirror, Jan. 21), it is difficult to comprehend the thinking behind this change. There is no question that the tenfold higher concentration makes the medication far more dangerous for those (nearly 15,000) Canadians to whom it is prescribed, as well as non-patients to whom it might be diverted. While the greatly heightened risk applies to all forms of ingestion, the most dangerous route of administration is by injection, and it clearly is much easier to inject a lethal dose contained in a teaspoon, for example, than in a glass. And the upside of such a conversion? There does not appear to be any. The claim you attribute to the Ministry of Health that the new product would “reduce the risk of errors” seems to lack either empirical or theoretical support. All in all, this appears to be a change that carries little, if any, benefit but could and almost certainly shall prove lethal in some cases. It should be reconsidered. Welcome the Year of the Horse

or those who follow the Lunar calendar, 2014 moves us out of year of the Snake and into year of the Horse, which repeats every 12 years in the Chinese Zodiac. The Immigrant Welcome Centre is hosting a large Lunar New Year Celebration Fundraiser and Potluck on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Community Centre to recognize this meaningful date. The evening will include potluck dinner with cash bar, live cultural entertainment, silent and live auctions and raffles. All guests must be of legal drinking age to attend. Tickets are a donation of $15 or more and are available at the newly opened Snow Pea Tea House on Historical Pier Street or the Immigrant Welcome Centre, located in Robron Centre. Tickets will be available at the door if available. All funds from the evening being donated to local groups, hosted by the Immigrant Welcome Centre and a portion to help an orphanage in Vietnam. Campbell River rockers Who is Barbosa won their second Battle of the Bands competition in Vancouver at the Railway Club. The Jan. 15 show was put on by Pacific Audio Visual Institute and organized by students and instructors. Andy Lynn Krieger, a Carihi grad who currently attends the institute’s Music Business program, was one of the organizers. She was also one of several solo acts to perform. Who is Barbosa has been performing together since 2012, playing various venues and festivals, but it’s been challenging for the band to play together lately, as three members have graduated from Carihi and are in post secondary education. Colin Massie on guitar is in grade 12 at Carihi and is active in the school band program; Mitchell Robertson on bass attends North Island College; Kyell Erickson, vocals/guitar, attends the University of Victoria; and Jacob Storback, drums, attends Simon Fraser University. The band has managed to rehearse on holidays and reading breaks, and still manages to write and record new music. At the Railway Club, the band played a 40-minute set, full of originals and a Jimi Hendrix Machine Gun jam. The crowd and judges – including Joey Keithley of the legendary punk band DOA – loved it. First prize for Who Is Barbosa is 18 hours of recording at a studio in Vancouver, with possibly more time being added on.

Acrylic painting classes bring colour to winter days Brighten up winter with an acrylic painting class through the City’s Recreation & Culture Department. A variety of classes are available for kids, teens and adults, beginner or advanced. Youth and adults can try acrylic painting taught by Sharon Sanford in a program called Triptych. Triptych is a three-panel painting that can be hung next to each other on a wall. Participants will learn painting techniques including stippling and sponging for background effects to accent simple theme such as nature, animals, sports or music. All supplies are provided. Just bring your theme ideas. Classes will be held Tuesdays, Feb. 4 through

18 at the Sportsplex. Classes for youth 10 years and up will be offered from 7:15-8:15 p.m. Classes for teens 14 years and up plus adults will be offered from 7:15-9:15 p.m. The youth program costs $22. Teens and adult program costs $36. Advanced Acrylic Painting classes taught by Caren Keine will explore the creative excitement of acrylic by building textures with gel mediums and painting directly in an oil painting method, or layering washes like a watercolour. Advanced classes will be held Mondays from 6:30-8:30 p.m., starting Jan. 27 at the Community Centre. Participants will need to bring their own painting supplies to each class. Living with reduced hearing sensitivity is like walking through life with tunnel vision; you rarely realize the significance of what you’re missing. Once hearing is restored, however, it’s like the veil has been lifted on all the subtle pleasures that give life meaning and depth.

You don’t know what you’re missing One of my favourite parts of my job is watching clients rediscover the things they never even knew they were missing. Here are just a few of the things they’ve told me:

This often causes those same people to become exhausted, annoyed and downright Grinchlike for no apparent reason. Even worse is the way it can annoy the people around you, who constantly have to repeat themselves for your benefit. Typically you won't even realize you're doing it until someone points it out – and suddenly you realize that everyone knew about your hearing loss but you.

Young Masters hope to remain undefeated The only blemish on the Mainstream Canada Young Masters’ record is a tie against Zgoda Juniors FC. On Saturday, the Campbell River men’s team will try to remain undefeated in Division 4 of the Vancouver Island Soccer League when it hosts Zgoda at Willow Point Park. Game time is 2 p.m. The Young Masters improved to 10-0-1 on the season with a 3-0 shutout over Prospect Lake FC last Saturday at the Layritz turf in Victoria. Unlike most of the

team’s notorious slow starts this season, the Young Masters showed energy from the opening whistle. Central midfielders Jacob Blanchard and Mark Ross quickly took control as they outworked the opposition and often gained ball possession. In the second half, Mainstream Canada continued to overpower Prospect Lake, as they were able to push one or two defenders forward to join offensive efforts. Centre-backs Colton Reesor and Shane Berry were rarely tested by the opposing forwards, but were strong when called upon.

At the 60-minute mark, Campbell River forward Zach Tillapaugh got to a loose ball in front of the goal and pounded it through traffic to make the score 3-0. Prospect Lake’s defence and goalkeeper performed admirably, but their team was not able to mount any sustained offensive pressure.

There were about 20-25 racers and many teams competing. Some were from Grouse in Vancouver, Silver Star, the Alberta Para Alpine Ski Team and the BC Para Alpine Ski Team. After inspecting the course it was soon time to race. The atmosphere at the top was buzzing, for some this was their first race. I was the sixth to go and as the countdown began I knew I was ready. The course felt rhythmic

with a few offset gates but crossing the finish was thrilling. That thrill only got bigger when I won the gold! Slalom started lower on the course and inspecting it I noticed two hairpins, two delays and one of the delays went into a royal flush. It definitely proved to be a test of skills. This race went faster than the day before as many teams had to hit the roads. The awards were in the Silver Star village and there I got my first gold for a slalom

race. As the teams said their farewells everyone was still glowing from the experience and some were also tired and ready to go home. Mel Pemble attends the Podium of Life SnowSports Academy at Mt. She is unable to hold a pole in her right hand and balance and control on her right leg is is not as strong as her left.

Community pulls together for baby Anabelle Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Today marks a special milestone for Campbell River parents Danielle Girard and Yannick Duplain. Their daughter, Anabelle, turns one-month old and their tiny baby, born three months prematurely, is fighting every day and getting stronger in the process. Anabelle was due March 21 but couldn’t wait and was born at 6:54 p.m. on December 24 at 27 weeks gestation. When she was born, Anabelle weighed just two pounds, seven ounces. Now she’s up to just more than three pounds and she’s starting to digest her mother’s milk. “We hear all the time from the pediatricians and the nurses that A – she’s a good size for her age, which isn’t surprising because her sister was 10 pounds, two ounces, and B – that she is quite a strong baby,” says mom Danielle. “We love hearing that.” Anabelle is also breathing on her own now, with the help of a C-PAP machine which periodically provides Anabelle with a puff of oxygen on her nose to remind her to breathe. Last weekend, Anabelle was able to come off the C-PAP for 40 hours

before she needed the machine. Danielle says steroid injections she was given in her hip prior to Anabelle’s birth are to thank for her baby’s healthy lungs. “We were so fortunate we got all four (injections) in before Anabelle was born on Christmas Eve,” Danielle says. “That was a really good thing. That gave her a really good start. Her lungs were prepared because of the injections.” The family is also seeing some good results with kangaroo care – two hour skin-to-skin sessions with mother and baby. While Anabelle is thriving, it’s been tough on the family emotionally and financially. Mom keeps a constant vigil over Anabelle at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster while dad and husband Yannick Duplain and Girard’s mother Yolande Girard take turns staying with Danielle and Anabelle. Danielle and Duplain’s two other children – Miko, 7, and Rosalie, 4 – have only seen their mom for a few days since Danielle was air lifted to hospital on Dec. 21 after going into early labour. They’ve yet to meet their new sister, as the neonatal intensive care unit is

It’s what’s allowing us to survive right now.” Danielle says she and her husband get emotional just thinking about all of the support they’ve received. “It’s overwhelming and very humbling for us to accept all these offerings. How the community has come together is incredible,” Danielle says. “My husband and I never, ever imagined that this could happen.” And there’s more good news for the family. Anabelle contracted a blood infection two weeks ago and after going on medication for a few days, the infection was gone. The tiny baby also underwent a blood transfusion on Jan. 12 for low hemoglobin counts which have already returned to normal. “She’s just a little champ,” Danielle says. “We’re so proud of her.”

To help the family out, parents and staff at École Mer-et‐montagne, where Miko attends school and Rosalie goes to pre-school, are organizing two upcoming fundraisers. The first is a community-wide garage sale to be held at the school on South Alder Street on Saturday, Feb. 1 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Donations of gently used items are being accepted from the community and can be dropped off in a bin at the school Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. All items at the garage sale will be sold by donation. On Feb. 15, staff and parents from the French school will be bagging groceries at Superstore to raise money. Those two events are the latest in a growing campaign to help the family, which began with a Facebook page, Blessing the Girard’s on the arrival of Baby Anabelle Girard Duplain, created by family friend Ludy Mennie. Since then, fundraisers have taken off and the family is overwhelmed by the outpouring of support.

Nina Hinton passed away peacefully on January 11, 2014 at the age of 92 years. Nina was born to parents Domna and Emilian Matiko on May 18, 1921 in Bordon, SK. Nina married the love of her life, Horace Hinton, on December 24, 1942. After they were married, they spent many years in the Nimpkish Valley, where Nina worked with Canfor, later moving to Delta, BC. She was also a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Surrey Memorial Hospital for several years. Nina retired to Wynndel in 1985 and pursued her love of gardening and involvement in church activities. She was a life-time member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, an avid gardener and an awesome chef! She also really enjoyed doing crafts. Nina was predeceased by her husband, Horace; sisters Mary Berden, Sandra McPherson and Ruby Babcock; brothers Nick Matiko, Pete Matiko and Edward Matiko. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Ann Whitley and brother Lawrence Matiko, along with numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be held later in the spring.

Robert (Bob) McQinn

August 11, 1932 January 19, 2014 Bob was predeceased by his wife of 50 years Grace (Metcalfe) McQinn in 2005, his parents: Jack and Goldie McQuinn, sisters: Gladys, Pearl, Ila and Dorothy and brothers Howard and Johnny. Bob is survived by his daughter Dawn (Karl), a very special niece who was like a daughter to him and always present to advocate for his needs: Vicki Auerbach, sons Sean (Mary) and Peter (Sharon), grandchildren: Mikhyala, Tessalei, Jessica, Shaun, Mike and Tony, great-grandchildren Bentley and Samantha, sisters Isobelle, Sybil and Rose, and brother Richard, AKA â&#x20AC;&#x153;Brother-Dickâ&#x20AC;?. Bob also leaves to mourn many special family and friends including two high school friends that recently visited him this past summer: Brian Williams and James Jeffery and his live in health care provider of 4 years, Leonor Nacar. Dad was born into the McQuinn pioneer family of the Comox Valley at St Josephs Hospital on Aug 11-1932 who were known for their contributions and management of the first logging operation in the area. Bob was a very private person, known for his genuine, gentle, sincere and fair dispositionâ&#x20AC;Ś for the love and passion he bestowed upon his wife and family. He was a jolly, generous, diplomatic, kind and joyful soul to be around who loved to share all kinds of good stories whether they be about logging or the shenanigans that he and little brother Dick would get into when younger. He lived in several logging camps here in BC where he was either a camp owner or manager and retired as the General Manager for Canforâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coastal logging operation in Vancouver. He considered many of his colleagues to be good friends. He would often say â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just LOVED LOGGINGâ&#x20AC;? and his career in general. More recently, Dad loved a simple and quiet life at home with his family where gardening, orchard harvesting, playing cards, berry picking, visiting with family and friends, walking, sitting or scooting in the sun to take in as many of its warm rays as possible â&#x20AC;&#x201C; definitely a sun worshiper. He loved the ocean and our family times having beach dinners at Oyster Bay. Thank you to all who supported him and his daughterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family during the final years as he began to struggle with dementia and decreasing physical health. Those kind hearted efforts of reaching out will never be forgotten and will always be cherished, knowing you stood by his side to help him weather that very challenging storm. A heart felt thank-you to Dr. Peter Daniels of Seawatch Medical Clinic, to whom took on the care of our father in a manner that was nothing short of â&#x20AC;&#x153;First Class!â&#x20AC;? To say that our Dad, Papa, friend, brother, co-worker and mentor will be missed, is an understatement. Dad, we love you more than all of the stars in the universe and I for one have lost the other half of my humanly creator and best friend. Life will forever be one of putting your advice into action through only proud and warm memories. Wilson, Don passed away peacefully in New Horizons in Campbell River on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the age of 84. He loved fishing and when Don was in his boat, he was in his glory.
