Homeowners in Pitt Meadows won’t see their taxes drop further after a pitch Tuesday to slash a proposed rate change for 2014 by almost one per cent was defeated, in a vote that saw MLA Doug Bing phoning in.

An audible “boo” was heard from the council gallery as Bing checked in via conference call to participate in the meeting since he was in Prince George on provincial business as the B.C. Liberal MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. As council got set to vote on a bylaw for this year’s budget, Coun. Dave Murray surprised his colleagues with a motion to shave the proposed 1.9 per cent municipal tax increase to one per cent.

he tech sector is warning of a looming crisis of computer literacy in North America, with pundits saying the education system must give tech education a more prominent place in the curriculum.

There is a projection that by 2020 there will be a million more computer science jobs than students in America. As soon as 2016, Canada will be short 100,000 tech workers. Incentives are there – computer science is among the highest paid college degrees, and jobs in com-

puter programming are growing at twice the average. Yet, even though our work, communication, entertainment and our lives are increasingly linked to the digital realm, less than 2.4 per cent of college students graduate with a degree in computer science – and that is fewer than 10 years ago. Code.org is a new, non-profit website that aims to promote computer literacy. In December, it held the Hour of Code event, and students at Garibaldi secondary in Maple Ridge joined more than 23 million people who learned an hour of code on the site. Apple, Google, Yahoo, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Disney and others partnered in the effort. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft’s Bill Gates personally got behind the project. Code.org founder Hadi Partovi said computer science will be important for nurses, journalists, accountants lawyers and other fields. “We want to pull back the veil on this black magic dark art of code that separates you from Mark Zuckerberg,” he said. A local recruiter for a tech-savvy generation, Todd Goodman teaches animation and digital media at Garibaldi. He gives his students an introduction to computer language that they can take on to careers. If they don’t

work in a tech field, they will at least be able to solve problems, and have a sense of confidence in understanding the digital world around us. They will be not merely consuming digital products others have produced, but be able to “decode” and appreciate them. Goodman is among the growing chorus who espouse that computer literacy is part of a well-rounded education. Just as all students study Shakespeare, dissect a frog in biology class, or learn what H20 means in chemistry, so should they get some foundational knowledge of code. He’s in good company. Promoting the Hour of Code, U.S. President Barack Obama encouraged young people to learn computer programming skills, even if they have no intention of working in the field. “Learning these skills isn’t just important for your future, it’s important for America’s future.” “Don’t just buy a new video game – make one. Don’t just download the latest app – help design it. Don’t just play on your phone – program it.” Programing a smart phone might sound optimistic, but it’s not. Goodman has a student in his class who creates custom icons for iPhones, and sells them. That’s some tough coding, said Goodman, because Apple generally creates products that are hard to reprogram. “There’s so much talk in the province about pushing the trades, but I wish they would talk more about

coding,” said Goodman. “App design is just exploding,” he said. “Coding jobs are here to stay, and these are jobs that pay $60,000 to start.” The tech-savvy students are not necessarily here to stay. Over two or three decades, California’s Silicon Valley has siphoned many of Canada’s best and brightest. The brain drain sees 350,000 Canadians living in the Bay Area. Natasha Nakonechny is a Grade 9 student who has been inspired by Goodman’s animation class. An assignment is to have students design their own video games. He teachers them to use the Blender 3D modeling software and the Unity game design engine. She has created a two-dimensional “retro-style” video game. She’s a talented artist, and uses the popular Japanese anime for her game. It has inspired her, and Natasha knows she can take a place in the video game industry someday. Natasha has thrown herself into the project, working away on her laptop on her own time, and that is not unusual for Goodman’s students. “It’s a lot of independent learning,” he said. “They work at it on their own time, and we get phenomenal work.” If playing video games was fun for Natasha, designing her own is consuming. “I found out you could design games pretty easily, and now it’s a

mini obsession,” she said. “Coding, obviously, is going to be important to me.” She’s a top computer sciences student, already a fantastic designer, but her experience is typical. Goodman’s class produced 25 games, and he said “some of them are fantastic. I was blown away.” He said BCIT, SFU and The Art Institute all have good programs for computer science, and his students have a good foundation and a portfolio piece to show them. Computer science is not the domain of just honor roll students. Anyone can learn it, Goodman asserts. It takes time, and some honest academic rigour. In terms of difficulty, he compares it with learning a new language. Goodman adored his Commodore 64 back in 1988. When the car in his racing game was too slow, he went into the game program, found the line of code he needed, and doubled his car’s speed. “It’s a lot simpler than people know, and it’s mathematical, and it makes sense,” he said. The key, in his opinion, is to get students hooked at a younger age. “You could teach a math unit in code, and get students interested when they are in elementary school,” he said. He suggest students could create their own calculator on a computer, and then sent the app to their phone. “It’s very do-able, and the longterm benefits are huge.”

Unwin gets super job with province In charge of new skills training plan by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter

Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District superintendent Jan Unwin has been given a new two-year appointment with the provincial government. Her new title: superintendent of graduation and student transitions. In late October, Unwin announced she would be leaving her position with the local school district after five years in the top job. “I’ve known for a while that I needed a new adventure,” she said. Wednesday, the ministries of education and advanced education (post secondary) announced Unwin’s new appointment. The province will soon launch a new 10year Skills Training Plan for Youth. Unwin’s job will be to implement that plan,

alongside a second provincial superintendent. The plan is designed to “help youth discover careers that offer bright futures and meet British Columbia’s economic needs across a wide range of industry sectors.” It will mark a shift in thinking, from an education system that goes from grades K-12 to a seamless K-16 system, Unwin explained. She will be building partnerships between school boards, colleges and universities, employers and government. Unwin will look for opportunities to increase the number of high school grads moving into post secondary, trades, technical programs and careers. And she will also expand dual-credit programs, which allow secondary students to earn credits toward post-secondary while they are still in high school. “That’s giving kids who have already identified their passions, credit for work they

have done [outside of school],” she said. She said the education system will be much different in 10 years. “It will look different, because the outside world looks so different,” she said. “There will be more of a focus on giving kids competencies Unwin that are broader than just content.” During her term as superintendent, the district was recognized nationally for its environmental school, cyber school, iPod literacy, and, most recently, for allowing elementary school teachers to stop giving letter grades in favour of a new conferencing model of student assessment. Unwin said she will miss the people she has worked with in school district 42. “Seventeen years I was in Maple RidgePitt Meadows, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Deputy superintendent Laurie Meston will assume the role of acting superintendent, beginning Feb. 1, until a new superintendent is hired. She has been with the district for more than 20 years. “The board wanted to ensure that the district had a strong leadership team in place during the transition period,” said board chair Mike Murray. “As the current deputy superintendent, Laurie Meston was a natural choice for this temporary appointment. Her experience and expertise will give our district continuity as it searches for its next superintendent.” The district has hired global executive search firm Boyden to undertake the search for its new superintendent of schools, and hopes to have the new CEO at the helm for the next school year.

School district seeks funding for green projects The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District is looking at energy saving projects, and has asked the Education ministry for a share of its green funding. These include a lighting upgrade at Pitt Meadows secondary, which would cost $181,000, a mechanical systems upgrade at Kanaka Creek Elementary for $476,000, and electric vehicles for the school district’s maintenance department, for $100,000. The province is making $5 million available to districts across the province, and treasurer Flavia Coughlan noted it is unlikely the board will have funding for all three projects approved. Emissions reductions and cost savings will be the main considerations as the province considers the grant applications.

Trustees noted there is a moral obligation for the district to address carbon emissions. “We should be leaders when it comes to doing the right thing,” said Trustee Sarah Nelson. The Kanaka project would replace 34 natural gas-fired rooftop units with a heat pump system. The existing units are near the end of life and need to be replaced, so the cost of upgrading to the heat pumps would be repaid in energy savings in less than seven years. It would also avoid 52 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. The Pitt Meadows lighting upgrade would save $5,600 per year in energy savings, while purchasing three electric cars to replace gasoline trucks would save the district $3,600 per year in energy

costs, and cut about seven tonnes of CO2 per year.

Happy trails The school board will allow Parks and Leisure Services to build a new gravel pedestrian trail on property at Pitt Meadows secondary. The trail – on a downhill slope south of the sports field – will extend west from an existing trail on the south slope, through city parkland, and connect with Parkside Walk within the Fieldstone subdivision on Harris Road. The entire cost of the trail and its maintenance will be assumed by the municipality. Trustee Carr said she walks that area regularly, and believes the trail will make the walk safer and be an improvement.

Height of hypocrisy Maple Ridge Coun. Corisa Bell billed taxpayers $250 last year to attend a fundraising gala at the private school her daughter attends. Mayor Ernie Daykin claims the expense, at least, is poor optics. Coun. Cheryl Ashlie goes a bit further, suggesting Bell’s gala expense is inappropriate because of the family connection. Bell has battled with both council colleagues before, so more is at play here than a ticket to an event to raise money for capital improvements to Meadowridge School. Regardless, Bell, in her first term on council, claimed more in expenses last year than any other member, and exceeded the allowable limit of $5,000 by a substantial margin – $2,819. Ashlie is correct in that councillors are given a set amount to claim as expenses and should not exceed it. But for whatever reason, Bell did, which shows poor judgement, as did claiming the school gala ticket. It’s not the amount of the ticket, although she should pay it back, and not even so much that her daughter attends the school, for which tuition is $17,000 a year. This is about a municipal politician, no matter the level of experience, who throughout the term has questioned municipal spending and fought over it – who campaigned against council wage increases and who now has racked up more expenses than anyone on council – frivolously deciding that taxpayers should pay her way to network at a function that has little to do with municipal business. There is no excuse for that. There are many ways for her to support the school and get to know those involved with it without dipping further into the public purse. Exceeding her municipal expense limit was neglectful. Claiming the school gala ticket was simply hypocritical. – The News

ince retiring and struggling to survive on a fixed income, no words strike greater fear in my heart while contemplating my financial security than to hear federal and provincial finance ministers talking about balancing their Sidewinder respective budgets. And to hear munici- Sandy Macdougall pal treasurers telling us how wise it is to accumulate municipal surpluses in their budgets. It seems that senior politicians can’t quite master the ability to live within their taxpayer-derived incomes. As a result of this shortcoming, they resort to cost-cutting measures or tax increases, which are designed to make them look efficient. But it just doesn’t wash when it comes to ordinary folks living on ordinary pensions and low income earners. Jim Flaherty, Canada’s federal finance minister in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government, recently said Canada Pension Plan payments cannot be increased because it would hurt the economy. Nor did he allude to the economy draining multi-million dollar income of top-level private and public corporate executives. The cost-cutting measures implemented by federal and provincial governments usually mean reducing or eliminating programs that make life a little easier for those of us stuck in lower income brackets. Of course, no finance minister wants to appear too miserly, so they usually make reference to how the tax rates are the lowest ever. But no matter how they cut the cake, life just gets tougher for too many people at the bottom of the economic pile. Trying to keep up to the rest of the world when you’re living on Canada Pension and Old Age Security is impossible. B.C. Hydro rates are going up more than five per cent a year; local municipal property taxes are set to jump by almost four per cent. And those are just a few of the things over which pensioners have absolutely no control, other than to opt for starving to death in their cold and darkened homes. I readily acknowledge that I don’t appear to be starving, but our combined household income makes it difficult to make healthier food purchases. In case you think I’m whining needlessly, the combined total of my own CPP and OAS pensions in the past year increased by less than one per cent. Municipalities are prohibited by provincial law from running deficit budgets, but Maple Ridge council has carried it one step further by adding a built-in surplus

Editor, The News: Re: Council keeps Pelton land on list (The News, Jan. 22). I was extremely disappointed to read that all of Maple Ridge council voted to consider the Pelton property for removal from the Agricultural Land Reserve. Years ago, as a board member of the Pitt Polder Preservation Society, our membership and many other local citizens fought long and hard against the Pelton proposal, which would have excluded farmland from the reserve and destroyed bird habitat, as well as viewscapes along the dikes, for an industrial zone. Studies have shown that we have enough industrial land in Maple Ridge. Why is council not encouraging growth in the Albion industrial area, as staff as suggested? Luckily the Agricultural Land Commission rejected the first Pelton application a few years ago. But the ALC seems to have watered down its commitment recently, triggered by the Liberals’ intention to reconsider the boundaries of the reserve. The ALC’s decision to allow the North Lougheed Connector to cut through farmland in Pitt Meadows is a recent example. The Pelton property will

Editor, The News: It seems that our council just takes it upon themselves to go ahead with any project they fancy, with no public input or prior notice, and no thought about how the decision may impact residents or urban wildlife. I looked out my back window this morning and saw municipal workers using chain saws and a tree chipper on the municipal side of my fence, which runs along Lougheed Highway. We have a lovely barrier of Laurel trees and Weeping willow, which leads down to the very sensitive area of McKinney Creek. I had a bit of a panic attack and immediately drove out to find out what was going on – I was saddened to see that much of the foliage had already been cut back, although the worker assured me they were not actually removing the trees near the fence. The problem, however, is – did the municipality contact an arborist to determine if this drastic cut will harm the trees, or will they be able to survive this haphazard butchering? Since none of the residents were informed, nor anyone who may have an interest in preserving this tree corridor for resident wildlife, as a highway buffer and green space, I doubt if any specialists were contacted.

Does our council give any thought to the lives impacted by their decisions? One more note: while council is busy clearing green spaces for sidewalks, two-block bike paths, and underground pipes, we have teenagers risking their lives crossing the Lougheed Highway every day at 210th Street, between 207th and Laity streets, on their way to and from school. Murray, Bell and Elkerton were accused of “political grandstanding.” “Why wasn’t this brought up before Christmas,” asked Bing, whose comments drew snide laughter from some of the audience. “There was an opportunity for more discussion then.” Bing is set to leave council Feb. 4 and has publicly stated he stayed on longer to help pass the budget. Council met for several days in December to decided how to spend tax dollars in 2014 and considered two budgets this year. One took into consideration a petition signed by 1,500 people – spearheaded by the late Tom Murray and his wife Norma – calling for no tax increase, while the second looked at a total increase of three per cent. Mayor Deb Walters claimed the three opposing councillors were silent when it was time to vote on the final 1.9 per cent municipal tax increase. “One would only assume we had consen-

sus,” said Walters. “We can take away, but we will have to make it up in the future. We have to be stable and steady as we move forward.” Coun. Bell, however, pointed out that there were 13 motions made during budget planning in December. Most of those votes were defeated - 4-3. He noted even items that were listed as “no risk” to service levels were dumped back into the budget, costing taxpayers $38,000. Bell also proposed taking money from the sale of city land in South Bonson to offset taxes, but that too was defeated. “People seem to have short memories,” he said. Before she voted against the budget, Elkerton lauded Port Coquitlam for giving its homeowners a modest decrease of 0.34 per cent on their tax bills this year. “We could still cut more,” said Elkerton, noting the city has budgeted $150,000 for a park at Airport Way and Bonson Road.

The Agricultural Land Commission granted the exclusion of 33.1 hectares (81 acres) with four caveats, including further protection of farmland in other parts of the city, a required change in Metro Vancouver’s Regional Growth Strategy, and beginning construction of the North Lougheed Connector within three years of the ALC’s acceptance of a trafficcalming plan for Old Dewdney Trunk Road. Opponents of the city’s plans, however, condemned council for pushing ahead, citing the loss of farmland, as well as the habitat for sandhill cranes and the potential for taxpayers to be saddled with a bill in the millions for a road and resulting interchange. Pitt Meadows’ plan to spur development on a large tract of undeveloped farmland along Lougheed Highway will be sent to Metro Vancouver despite pointed criticism at a public hearing Tuesday. Of the 18 speakers who expressed their views, six supported the city’s plans for the 50-hectare area, located northeast of the highway and Harris Road. “We are only here tonight because the [Agricultural Land Commission], after years of careful consideration, made the decision to move forward with exclusion based on the city’s proposed concept for the area,” said Dave Major, a manager with SmartCentres, a company which owns a large chunk of land in the corridor and bills itself as Canada’s largest developer and operator of “unenclosed shopping centres.” Major then touted a possible tax windfall for the city, should the entire stretch turn commercial, a plan which won’t be realized for decades. “It has the potential to create 600,000 square feet of new retail commercial space and two million square feet of mixed employment uses,” he said. “This, in turn, could generate up to 1,200 new retail jobs and, more importantly, for a growing community like Pitt Meadows, over 9,000 new office and industrial jobs.” The city hopes that developing the entire site will facilitate the construction of the North Lougheed Connector, a road that’s needed to access the commercial strip. Land that used to be set aside for a high school is now slated for a new subdivision, after the school board said it doesn’t have the money. The 4.4 hectares (11 acres) is at 24152 – 112th Ave., in north Albion, where the district has created an area for density bonusing. In return for building smaller lots of 371 sq. m, allowing a greater number of units, the builder will pay the district $3,100 for each of the 22 lots. That will generate about $68,200 that will go into a fund that will be used to pay for amenities such as trails or parks. Under the district’s pilot density bonusing program for that area, builders can increase the density of their residential projects, provided they pay a fee for each lot. It’s been four years since School District No. 42 said it no longer needed the location. New Kanaka mall A new two-storey shopping centre is to be built along 240th Street in the Kanaka area of Maple Ridge. A 7,561-sq.-foot shopping centre has been proposed for an eight-acre site at 11185 – 240th St., on the southwest corner of 112th Avenue and 240th Street, with shops on the ground floor and two-bedroom rental apartments on the second. The complex will be L-shaped and have two parking spaces for each

unit with the stalls having different surfaces to distinguish them from commercial parking spaces. Some of the other features include planting and landscape buffers to provide separation between the complex and neighbouring single-family neighbourhoods. The building itself will match those of the surrounding houses, while streetlights will minimize light pollution. Walking will be encouraged by making it easier for people to move from the sidewalks to the stores. The shopping project will proceed in tandem with the construction of 24 townhouses and two duplexes, each about 2,000 sq. feet, on the same property. According to a staff report, the buildings are located closer to the street to enhance the row house streetscape and intimate feel of the development. Architectural features, colour schemes, and materials were chosen to reflect surrounding developments and the Maple Ridge landscape. Maple Ridge council previewed the project at its committee meeting Monday before sending it on to a regular council meeting.

Marks moving A major downtown store, Marks Work Wearhouse, is pulling up stakes and heading for more spacious quarters further west on Lougheed Highway. A new Marks store is planned for 20758 Lougheed Hwy., a 1.2acre site. The proposal is to put up a new building that will provide double the square footage of the existing store on Lougheed Highway and 225th Street. Council first looked at the request at its committee meeting Tuesday and sent it on to a future council meeting for first reading.

Plaza bought Owners of Johnston Meier Insurance have bought the Haney Plaza to add to their property acquired on Dewdney Trunk Road and 224th Street in downtown Maple Ridge. Bruce Johnston and Tom Meier bought the retail mall at 22255 Dewdney Trunk Road, last November, for $7.3 million. The strip mall contains a discount liquidation store, a laundromat and several smaller retail outlets on a four-acre property that stretches from Dewdney Trunk Road to Brown Avenue. The property is added to at least 16 other lots just to the east, from 223rd to 224th Street, 10 of which were sought for rezoning in 2011. While the file is still active, it isn’t moving forward at the present, District of Maple Ridge development manager Chuck Goddard said Tuesday. Two years ago, Meier had sought rezoning to allow future construction of five residential towers, ranging from 15 to 25 storeys, to be built in phases over several years. An hotel, seniors residences, an educational institute, condos, restaurants and shopping were all proposed for the area between 223rd and 224th streets. Overall, more than 226,000 square feet of commercial space and 693,000 sq. ft. of residential and hotel accommodation were projected. Now, with Haney Plaza added, the properties now cover two entire blocks from 224th to Plaza street.

Maple Ridge is dishing out another $90,316 in incentive grants to developers who, in return, will spend $31 million on new construction in the downtown. The money is part of the town centre incentive program, designed to kickstart building in the downtown through tax exemptions, speedier processing and outright grants. The program, approved in 2010, expired in December 2013, with the commercial component extended for a year. The grants were for three of the latest projects, one at 11862 – 226th St., a four-storey, $4-million condo project. The grant to Falcon Homes was for $28,023. A second grant of $37,293 was given to Falcon Homes, Stacks and Decker Developments and Mainstay Holdings for a four-storey condo building at 22327 River Rd. The project is worth $8.45 million. Another grant is estimated at $23,000, but not finalized. That will go to HSH Hotel Ltd., for construction of the 125-room hotel planned for the foot of 224th Street. The construction project is valued at $18.5 million. Under the incentive program, the district will pay up to 10 per cent of the development cost charges for residential and mixed-use projects and 25 per cent of the development cost charges for commercial projects. Discounts for building permit charges are also available. Council approved the program in 2010, allocating a total of $740,000 for the upfront incentives. As result, more than $100 million in construction projects have begun in the downtown core of Maple Ridge in the last three years.

Cougar sighting in Webster’s Corners Watch for warning signs by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter

For the first time in decades of living near Cliff Park, Gord Uggla spotted a cougar in his east Maple Ridge neighbourhood. Uggla’s wife Lorraine first saw the big cat about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, after it triggered a floodlight outside their house, which overlooks the park on 251st Street. “What came down the road, I can’t believe it – an eight- to 10-foot long cougar. My wife woke me up. “The lights went on in our property. It walked right through our property out to the streetlight at Cliff Park. You could get a real visual look at it, big long tail. This was a cougar.” With Webster’s Corners elementary nearby, a new playground at the park, people hiking the trails of Cliff Falls, and

Maple Ridge parks and leisure services has since posted signs warning a cat is in the area of Cliff Park. teens hanging around at night, people should know. “Somebody should be warning them there are cougars in the area, not just a bunch of verbal.” Cliff municipal park adjoins Kanaka Creek Regional Park. Doug Petersen, interim manager of Metro Vancouver regional parks (east area), said so far this year he hasn’t heard of any cougar sightings in Kanaka Creek park, but will

contact Uggla and the Ministry of Environment’s conservation officer service. “If they have a confirmed sighting within the parks boundary, that’s enough to put up a sign. We need to know it’s right in the park boundary,” in an area where people gather. But the signs have to come down, as well, if there are no further sightings, so people don’t become complacent.

“They’ll go back up if we have more activity.” Metro Vancouver parks has the same policies for bear and coyote sightings. Maple Ridge parks visited Cliff Park Thursday morning and posted signs warning that a cat was in the area. Uggla said he’ll be more careful with a big cat in the area. He’s also seen a bobcat nearby. “We haven’t seen a cougar in the 40 years that we’ve been here, even though we all know that there are cougars in the area.” In January 2011, a cougar killed seven farm animals along 256th Street, not far from the park. The year before, conservation officers shot and killed a cougar that had killed two goats and a cat, also near Webster’s Corners. People are advised to keep livestock closer to the home, leaving a radio on at night and to install motion detector lights to stop the cats from prowling on their properties.

The Ford Edge won Best New Utility Vehicle Award from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada in 2011.

he Edge was the first mid-sized cross-utility vehicle from Ford when it was launched in 2007. It has been a resounding sales success, especially in Canada, where it’s also built. Compared with a more traditional utility vehicle, such as the then truck-based Ford Explorer, the Edge is a lighter carbased vehicle that offers better fuel economy, sexier styling and superior road manners. It also earned Ford Edge the overall Best New Utility Vehicle Award from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). The interior make-over included the introduction of MyFord Touch, an advanced connectivity system that has its critics in the media and consumer groups. Ford has tried to address these user issues with system updates. The main touch-screen is divided into four colour-coded sections (phone, audio, climate and navigation) and it can be operated with voice commands. A major under-hood change followed in 2012 with the introduction of Ecoboost, an engine series that has revitalized the entire Ford product line. The turbocharged 2.0 litre (240 horsepower) four-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection in the Edge provides excellent power and great fuel economy. The claimed city/highway fuel economy is 9.9/6.6 L/100 km. Edge comes in three front-drive trim levels: SE, SEL and Limited editions. It’s also offered with a 3.5-litre V-6 engine that can produce 285 horsepower. City/highway fuel economy is 11.9/8.0 L/100 km. This engine is also mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and there’s an optional all-wheel drive system. The top ‘sport’ edition of Edge comes with a 3.7 litre V6 that can produce 305-horsepower and comes with huge 22-inch polished-aluminum wheels. The Ecoboost editions are strictly front-drive and come with an aero body kit package with an active front grille, which has concealed shutters that controls air flow through the radiator and the engine bay. The aero body kit includes unique side skirting, side mirrors and rear liftgate spoiler. Edge is bigger on the inside than it might appear from the outside. The cabin is spacious and the room provided for rear passengers is particularly good. Rear riders also get adjustable seatbacks and top trim levels come with a power fold-down feature that allows the seatbacks to be remotely released by switches in the rear cargo area. Two highly desirable (originally optional) active safety features are Blind Spot detection and Cross-Traffic Alert. The blind spot system not only warns when another vehicle is lurking or approaching in an adjacent traffic lane. When backing out of a parking stall, the cross traffic alert system can detect and warn of vehicles approaching from either side. Stylish yet practical, the good ride qualities of the Ford Edge make it an excellent road trip vehicle, especially with the fuel-saving Ecoboost engine under hood.

locks of international journalists roamed the floors of COBO Hall in downtown Detroit on the occasion of the 25th annual North American International Auto Show. It’s hard to narrow down which ones to focus on. Let’s start with some concepts. MINIs –for more than a decade they have been romping the streets and causing people to smile, whether driving them, sitting in them or watching them. At the NAIAS, the masses were introduced to the MINI John Cooper Works Concept. Not a whole heck of a lot of information was released, but you can bet your bottom dollar that it’ll be fast. There are large air inlets, 18-inch wheels and the unmistakable MINI silhouette and face. It’s built as much for the road as it is the track. Until the production vehicle is produced, we will have to be patient and wait for pricing, specs and all the fun stuff. Kia certainly drew the crowds when it came to its GT4 Stinger Concept. One of the most common things she’s noticed, she says, is that too many new strata owners don’t understand what it strata living entails, and she advises that the only way to remedy that problem before it’s too late is to ask plenty of questions of your realtor, people who live in the complex you’re thinking about buying in, and friends and family who have already crossed over.

irst-time buyer? Downsizer? Just someone tired of all the yard work that goes with owning a detached home? There are many reasons to consider strata living. But if you’re thinking about it, be sure to go in with your eyes wide open. Such is the advice from two local realtors whose know the ups and downs of strata living. Carole Caffrey is a real estate agent with more than 20 years experience in the buying and selling of strata units. She is also co-owner of Fraser Property Management, which handles such duties for more than 80 strata complexes throughout Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and beyond. Frank Budd is a real estate agent with Maple Ridge’s Re/Max Lifestyles office, and he also has years of experience with strata units. And he lives in a strata. Budd says the most important consideration when contemplating the purchase of a strata unit is to understand that you will be living in close proximity to other people. “You have to realize it’s going to be like that, and you have to make the mental adjustment,” he says. That’s not to say you won’t have privacy, but you are more likely to hear other people’s noises, smell their cooking, and so on. Another key consideration, he adds, is to realize there are going to be certain restrictions on what you can and can’t do. “You have to follow the rules, and if you can’t follow rules, you might want to reconsider [the notion of strata living].” Caffrey agrees with both points, and notes that it’s also important to get as much information as possible before purchasing a strata,

or any home for that matter. Is there adequate insurance? Do they have the funds for capital repairs and regular maintenance? Do they have a depreciation report and what does it say? “The depreciation report is going to be very important for buyers in the future because it can point out all kinds of potential problems,” she offers. “Check the minutes and bylaws thoroughly to see whether there is anything coming up that you, as a buyer, should know about – especially special assessments. Your realtor should be on top of that, but due diligence is important to avoid surprises.” Strata meeting minutes are also

useful, says Budd, because they can give you a good idea about what living there is going to be like. Does there appear to be a lot of rancour? Does everyone get along reasonably well? Are there lots of problems? “[The minutes can] give you the flavour of day-to-day living in a particular strata,” he notes. Caffrey says some of the other things to investigate are issues like pet and parking restrictions, places for children to play, and even seemingly innocuous items like being allowed to hang washing to dry or not. Also, potential owners need to be aware that just because the bylaws say one thing on the day a person moves in, they can change.

“Strata living is community living,” says Caffrey. The only way to influence the direction those things will change is to be involved, she adds. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to join the strata council, but you should be paying attention to what’s happening as things occur, or before changes take place. Budd says strata living should be a lifestyle choice. It’s great for first-time buyers, but some people don’t want to, or can’t, mow lawns anymore, so they opt for a townhouse or condo. Some people like living in close proximity to others for the sense of community or for security. “There are advantages and disadvantages,” he says. “The

There will be other expenses applicable only to your unit. • Make sure you have your own unit insurance. The strata corporation’s insurance does not cover your contents or any upgrades that have been done to the unit’s interior, for instance. • Make sure the contingency reserve fund is adequate. • Does the unit you’re considering have proper permissions for the upgrades the owner is using to sell you on the unit? Laminate flooring is the number one problem when it comes to permission. • If the strata fees seem low, this could be false economy. Again, ask questions as to why they’re so low. There may be perfectly reasons, or it may be the current owners have been deferring maintenance. • Check out the rental situation. There are advantages and disadvantages to allowing renters in a complex.

Three Ridge coaches with Team BC lacrosse

Junior national champion golfer one of three finalists

Three of the five head coaches for provincial teams are from Maple Ridge lacrosse. The BC Lacrosse Association (BCLA) announced the five head coaches for the midget, bantam, pee wee, female midget and female bantam 2014 Team BC box lacrosse programs. Curt Malawsky will run the midget team, Daren Fridge the pee wees and Chris Gill the female bantam team. All three list Ridge Meadows as their home lacrosse association. Fridge is the outgoing head coach of the Maple Ridge Burrards of the WLA, and Gill will be his replacement. Malawsky is from Maple Ridge, Fridge lives in Coquitlam and Gill resides in Pitt Meadows. The B.C. bantam team will

Kwon, 18, won the 2013 Canadian Junior Boys Championship at a tournament in Sudbury, Ont. in the summer. He took the tournament by a wide five-point margin, after shooting rounds of 64-74-6969. He also won the event in 2011, and was the runner-up in 2012. Kwon was also a Canada Summer Games champion, is a member of the Team Canada Development Squad, and is a Freshman with the University of Washington men’s golf team. Sport BC announced the outstanding amateur athletes, coaches and officials named as finalists for 14 of the 18 award categories to be presented at the upcoming Athlete of the Year Awards. Locals win mixed bonspiel

Local curlers Bryan Kedziora and Colleen Hannah won their first B.C. Mixed Doubles title on home ice last weekend. The pair from Golden Ears Winter Club lost only once during regular play, then blazed through the playoff round, with a 6-3 win in the quarter-finals, a 12-6 win in the semis and a decisive 8-1 win in the final against Team Miller – Victor and Kerri Miller of the Delta Curling Club. Kedziora and Hannah will now travel to nationals in Ottawa, March 19-23 and, if successful there, to the worlds in Dumfries, Scotland. Kedziora is a two-time B.C. junior men’s champion (2007 and 2009), while Hannah won a B.C. junior title in 1988. Both have long connections to the Golden Ears club, and their families have been members since its beginning. “We stayed with our game plan, which included sharing the last rock responsibility by changing our line-up every end and kept it up throughout the event,” she said. “The competition and ice were fantastic and we were excited to win in our home club.” Fifteen teams representing clubs in Vancouver, Maple Ridge, North Vancouver, Richmond, New Westminster, Delta, Kelowna, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Prince George took part. The event in Maple Ridge was only the second B.C. Mixed Doubles

Championship ever held. The format is becoming more popular, and could even become an Olympic event in 2018. There is one male and

one female curler, and the game is played over eight ends, instead of the usual 10. At the nationals, 32 teams will compete, with the teams divided into

four round-robin pools of eight, with the top two from each pool and the next four best roundrobin records moving on to the 12-team singleknockout playoff round.
