Call before you go

GREAT OUTDOOR FUN

Call 8-1-1 before going to emergency, clinic or doctor’s office It is influenza season and many with flu-like symptoms may be wondering about the best way to seek medical attention. If you have influenza, you can be highly infectious, and an unnecessary visit to the emergency room, clinic or doctor’s office, could put others at risk. Calling 8-1-1 from the comfort of home provides 24-hour access to professional medical advice while also helping reduce the spread of the flu. When you call 8-1-1, you will speak to a health services representative who will direct your call to a registered nurse. Registered nurses are available at any time of the day or night, every day of the year. They are able to assess your symptoms over the phone and advise if you need to be visiting your doctor or going to the hospital. Translation services are also available upon request in more than 130 languages. 8-1-1 is a free-of-charge health information and advice phone line available in British Columbia. The 8-1-1 phone line is operated out of HealthLink BC, which is part of the Ministry of Health. 8-1-1 provides a number of additional services including access to pharmacists, dieticians and health service representatives who can help you find the closest services to where you live. British Columbians, who are otherwise healthy, are encouraged to call 8-1-1 before heading to a health-care facility or calling an ambulance, and to remember the best way to stop the spread of the flu is to wash your hands and stay home if you feel sick. To learn more, go to Immunize BC at immunizebc.ca.

Bantams finish fourth in McBride

league team from 100 Mile House travelled to McBride for a tournament Jan. 18-19.

The team, Save-onFoods, was up against strong competition and finished fourth behind

McBride, Mackenzie and Kamloops. Public relations manager Denise Waldner says the local skaters played very well, made nice passes and had good game sense and strategy. “But [we had] few chances against the much stronger, bigger and older children on the other teams. We still managed to score some goals.” Save-on-Foods lost the four games played. Against Mackenzie, Lukas Waldner and Reid Davidson scored

goals. Luke Jewitt played in goal and earned the team’s most valuable player (MVP) award. Trevor Moore earned the MVP nod against McBride for his hard work on defence. In Game 3, against Kamloops, Davidson and Waldner found the back of the net. Waldner received the MVP award. In the final game, 100 Mile House met Kamloops again the morning of Jan. 19. Alex Glen scored a goal and was named MVP.

100 Mile House’s Midget Rep hockey team took on a Tier 2 team from Williams Lake in backto-back games last weekend. Mayvin Plumbing & Heating (Tier 3) lost 4-0 on Jan. 18 at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre in 100 Mile House, and went down 10-2 in Williams Lake on Jan. 19. The local team is hosting Midget Provincials in March. 100 Mile House coach Dustin Price says Williams Lake was missing some of its top skaters for game 1, but dressed a full squad for game 2. “We were able to work on our team game this past weekend against a good Tier 2 team – a level above us.

Support family literacy By Melody Newcombe Celebrate Family Literacy Week in 100

One of my favourite books By Noreen Beer This past year, I read Eighty Days: Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland History-Making Race Around the World by Mathew Goodman It tells the story of Elizabeth Cochran (Nellie Bly), a journalist who had a passion for writing about the blight of working women of the time. She also did a daring expose of a New York Lunatic Asylum. Going undercover as a patient with amnesia, she was able to expose some of the terrible treatments that inmates received. In 1889, she persuaded her editor to allow her to make a timed around-the-world trip, fashioned after Jules Verne’s Noreen Beer book Around the World in Eighty Days. As she was about to set off on her journey, a rival newspaper sent another female reporter Elizabeth Bisland to make the journey in the opposite direction, and win the race. Bly had no idea she had a rival until well into the trip. Nellie’s change in attitudes and character during her trip surprised me. I was also amazed at the detailed trip planning that happened in an age of rather slow communications. Noreen Beer is the Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy’s ESL co-ordinator and she urges folks to support volunteers by making a donation for a Free Press newspaper during Reach a Reader Day on Jan. 29.

(CCPL) annual Reach a Reader Day event on Jan. 29. Volunteers will be out early in the morning selling the 100 Mile House Free Press newspaper by donation at Tim Hortons, Cariboo Mall, the 100 Mile District General Hospital, District

office, Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre and several businesses along Birch Avenue. The CCPL holds this event to raise awareness about literacy issues and to have fun while fundraising for its free programs. All the funds raised go into programs, such as Partner Assisted

Favourite storyteller By Melody Newcombe I have too many favourite authors and books just to pick one. One of my favourite storytellers is Stuart McLean who can be heard on CBC Radio with stories from The Vinyl Cafe. He has written many books, including Home from the Vinyl Cafe, which Melody is a collection short sto- Newcombe ries about Dave, who is the proud owner of the world’s smallest record store, his family and friends. The stories Stuart tells are funny and heart warming and are about the family’s misunderstandings, miscues and mistakes. These stories are so much fun to read or listen to on the radio. His stories are warm, witty and they will make you laugh out loud. Melody Newcombe is the Cariboo-Chilcotin Partners for Literacy Society operations support worker, and she urges folks to support the Reach a Reader volunteers who will be taking donations for Free Press newspapers on Jan. 19.

things into the stories. Farmer McGregor’s garden was laid out just like my aunt’s garden and, surprisingly, it grew exactly the same vegetables. My uncle had a magical way of transporting us into the stories he read.

Today, I still love to use my imagination to become a part of any story I am reading. Anita Price is the English as a second language co-ordinator Cariboo-Chilcotin Partners for Literacy Society, and she urges everyone to support the Reach a Reader volunteers with a donation for a Free Press newspaper on Jan. 29.

McLeod promotes New Prosperity Mine project design dispute ‘concerning’ for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP

Carole Rooney Free Press

The proposed New Prosperity Gold-Copper Project was on the minds of some South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce members who attended a Jan. 15 luncheon where Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo MP Cathy McLeod was guest speaker. Local businessman Pat Corbett asked McLeod what timing she expected on the federal government’s decision on whether to allow the project to proceed to the permitting stage. “We just want to underscore the importance of it.” McLeod noted the issue now rests

with federal Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq, who is due to make her decision by the end of February. The final decision will be made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet. Expanding on that conversation in an interview the same day, McLeod said she has “always supported the important opportunity” and “economic benefit” of Taseko Mines Ltd.’s gold-copper project in the CaribooChilcotin. A report by Taseko that Natural Resources Canada used the wrong design in its analysis and, therefore, the federal assessment review panel relied on this incorrect information to draw conclusions in its report, dis-

turbs the MP. “I have concerns regarding the reports made by the proponent that there were some issues with the information, and that needs to get resolved in terms of the assessment and the information provided. “There has been work by both [Cariboo-Prince George MP Dick Harris] and I to indicate we have concerns to both the Minister of Natural Resources [Joe Oliver] and the minister of environment regarding the concerns by the proponent.” McLeod noted she also told the ministers about the importance of the economic opportunity New Prosperity Mine offers to the region, particularly after closures of small

businesses and “soft cycles” in the forestry industry. “Obviously, anything that goes forward has to be done in an environmentally sound way, and I believe that open-pit copper mines in British Columbia, with appropriate regular oversight, can meet high standards.” The important points have been made to Aglukkaq and cabinet in advance of their pending decision, she added. “I hope the mine goes forward with the confidence of the people that it will be done in an environmentally sound way, and I hope the Aboriginal communities will recognize and benefit from the important opportunities from that mine.”

Water utility billing error results in 12 per cent revenue shortfall While reviewing the year-end financial statements, the District of 100 Mile House administration noticed an issue with the water utility revenue. There was a variance between annual projected revenue and actual amounts invoiced – they were off by about 12 per cent. After a detailed analysis, it was confirmed that 28 of 800 quarterly billings had been under billed for the 2013 fiscal year. Forty per cent of the unbilled volume is attributed to two highend consumers. The analysis determined an error was made when administration created a new master file to set up the 2013 utility billing system. When typing in the “over 30,000 gallons” rate, a parameter of 30,000 to 99,999.99 was

input instead of 30,000 to 9,999,999. This resulted in a system failure to invoice customers for volumes consumed in excess of 100,000 gallons; thus creating a revenue shortfall at year end. As a corrective measure, the District

is notifying all of the affected customers about the error and informing them of the process to recover the revenue for the unbilled volumes. In most instances, recovery will be billed equally over the four quarterly billing cycles in 2014.

"The District will do its best to alleviate the impact and work with clients to implement a recovery plan with those most adversely affected," says Councillor Ralph Fossum. "We apologiize to the affected residents, and remain dedicated to rectifying this situation." .

The Angus Reid poll revealed that 81 per cent of B.C. teens between 15 and 18 years agree the provincial government should adopt legislation to ban all tobacco products with fruit and candy flavours as a measure to reduce tobacco use among youth. These flavours reduce the harsh effects of cigarette smoke, making it easier for youth who may be experimenting with smoking to become addicted to tobacco. A national Youth Smoking Survey released last fall by the Propel Centre for Population Health Impact at the University of Waterloo found more than half (53 per cent) of youth tobacco users in B.C. had used flavoured tobacco products. This equates to
