TERRACE - BC Transit passengers will have a drier and more comfortable place to wait outside of the medical building on Park Ave. thanks to the Terrace Rotary Club. Left to right: Kevin Lorenz and Art Erasmus from the Rotary club, city councillors Marylin Davies, Stacey Tyers, Bruce Bidgood, Brian Downie, and mayor Dave Pernarowski, and BC Transit official Troy Tymoschuk. The Terrace Rotary Club donated $8,500 money, the City of Terrace built the foundation, and BC Transit built the shelter itself.

Highway 16 maintenance level boosted TERRACE - The entire length of Hwy16 through northern BC is to be better maintained during the winter, says the provincial government. In a release Jan. 21, the province says increasing the maintenance standard for Hwy16 from the Alberta border through to the coast as well as for Hwy97 from Cache Creek north into northeastern BC is needed because of increased traffic due to liquefied natural gas development and other industrial development. It means there will be quicker response times during snowfalls and other weather events and not as much snow will be allowed to build up before it is removed. Hwy16 had been classified as a Category B highway, increas-

ing to Category A only when its route takes it through municipalities. There have also been calls for increasing maintenance standards because of a high number of accident fatalities along Hwy16 since the beginning of the year. While the Jan. 21, 2014 press release speaks about increased industrial traffic, it did not directly address the number of accident fatalities. John Rustad, the Liberal MLA for Nechako Lakes, which includes Vanderhoof, called the announcement welcome news. “These changes will not only make travel safer and more efficient, they will have significant, positive spin-off effects for Brit-

ish Columbians throughout the North,” said Rustad who is also the aboriginal relations and reconciliation minister. The province expects action to be taken based on the increased maintenance standard by mid to late February. The decision came after Robin Austin and Doug Donaldson, two northwest NDP MLAs, began a renewed call to increase winter maintenance standards on Hwy16. Austin was specifically concerned with the approximately 60 kilometre stretch of Hwy16 heading west of Terrace toward Prince Rupert. It was a prime candidate for increased winter road mainte-

nance because it goes through several snowbelts and avalanche-prone areas. Austin was also focussed on summer work, saying maintenance measures could prepare road surfaces for winter driving eliminating the deep grooves made in road surfaces by large commercial and industrial vehicles. Those grooves, when filled with water during the winter months, make for dangerous driving conditions for smaller vehicles, Austin added. Hwy37 between Terrace and Kitimat was increased from a Category B to Category A maintenance standard several years ago.

TERRACE - Northern Savings Credit Union staff member LeeAnn Mutschke, right, presents a corporate donation of $500 to Major Rosa Moulton of the Salvation Army, left. The money went to support the Army’s annual kettle campaign for Christmas 2013. Northern Savings also had nearly 10 staff members volunteer to the sit with the Army’s kettles over the Christmas 2013 season.

Groups fight pipeline PRINCE RUPERT - The rush to the court room has begun as four groups are looking to block the federal government from approving the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline. The Gitxaala Nation of Kitkatla, the Haisla Nation of Kitamaat, EcoJustice Lawyers on behalf of ForestEthics Advocacy, Living Oceans Society and Raincoast Conservation Foundation and the Environmental Law Centre at the University of Victoria on behalf of B.C. Nature and Nature Canada all filed appeals with the Federal Court of Appeal in Vancouver last week. The suit filed by the Gitxaala claims the Joint Review Panel (JRP) ignored issues surrounding aboriginal rights and title. The band claims that the approval flies in the face of more than 7,500 pages of documentary evidence, a 320 page submission and experts the band submitted in opposition to the project during the review. “The JRP had a responsibility to take our concerns seriously, but it didn’t,” said acting Gitxaala Chief Clarence Innis. “Gitxaala were given the opportunity

to speak, but were not heard,” said Rosanne Kyle, lawyer for the Gitxaala Nation. A spokesperson for Enbridge Northern Gateway said the court filings are premature. “Northern Gateway is confident in the integrity of the Joint Review Panel process and report. Its recommendations and conditions are based on science and the input of experts,” said

Ivan Giesbrecht. “As part of the legal process, organizations and individuals have 30 days to appeal a decision of any federal board or tribunal. Today’s filing from various environmental groups did not come as a surprise to us. It is an expected part of the process.” There’s no indication yet of when the court filing will lead to an actual court action.

Kitimat extreme weather shelter opens By Cameron Orr

The Northern connector

KITIMAT - The Extreme Weather Planning Group (EWPG) has been allowed to use $8,000 out of BC Housing’s $15,000 grant to the District of Kitimat to get the extreme weather shelter up and running. Now that the extreme weather response program plan, the shelter is officially operational and will open during specified weather situations. Notably the shelter, which is located at the Public Safety Building at the top of Haisla Hill, will activate when temperatures are either at or below -4C, when temperatures are 0C with a weather warning, when there’s significant snow accumulation, or when there’s been three or more days of rain, “creating conditions where it is difficult for a homeless person to remain dry.” (The three days of rain would only trigger the shelter to be open for one night.) Margaret Warcup and Trish Parsons for EWPG were at the January 6 council meeting requesting the release of $8,000 from the District’s BC Housing grant, as well as some other housekeeping to get everything in order for the shelter. “We need to have in place an activation team to call the cold weather or extreme weather alert, and that involves contacting BC Housing, the government... so the first part of the request

for tonight is that council consider appointing the deputy CAO Warren as the activation team person for the District of Kitimat,” said Parsons at council. Warren Waycheshen’s appointment, which was approved by council, means he can decide when to call an extreme weather alert. The process is once an alert has been called, a number of volunteer contacts would be informed and notices would go in various groups’ windows and to the media announcing the shelter would be open in the evening. Any alert would be called by 3 p.m. Parsons said at the meeting that there have been three specific people who have needed use of the shelter so far in the winter. Parsons later explained to the Sentinel that from the $8,000 will be hired a part-time employee who will work for the shelter and for related issues. “It’s to employ someone part time to assist in setting up all the protocols...and there’s some items we need to purchase in order to run the shelter,” she said. Training volunteers is part of that employment. The extreme weather shelter plan is in effect between November 1 and March 31, intermittently during that period as needed. There’s also a shelter of a similar kind in Terrace, operated by the Ksan House Society and

located in the All Nations Centre.

This shelter consists of 10 beds and it is the

first time it has been located at the centre.

Last article we racked our Raisin wine away from the heavy lees. Your wine should be clearing and looking good in the carboy. Rushing things will do more harm than good to the wine. The fine sediment on the bottom of the carboy is a good thing and does not harm the flavor of the wine. The aromas and flavors in the fine sediment add to the wine’s complexity. Make sure your wine is finished dropping out before proceeding to the bottling. Turn on a flashlight and put it against your carboy then look directly at the bulb on the opposite side. You should be able to define the bulb’s filament. If you see the filament then it is okay to proceed to bottling. This can only be done if you have used a glass or a pet plastic carboy. If you are using the opaque plastic carboy the clarity will be a judgment call on your part. Start the bottling by racking your wine into a clean sanitized carboy a couple of days before bottling leaving the sediment behind. Using a glass 23 liter carboy as a guide line, clean and sanitize 33 bottles. This will be enough so as you will not have to sanitize a couple of more bottles at the end. You should get anywhere from 30 to 33 bottles depending on your filling technique and the volume of your carboy. Use a cork and a good corker to seal your bottles. With a natural cork that is Agglomerated, Collimated, Disk or Punched, after corking your wine, allow the bottles to stand for a few days then lay them down. Corks come sanitized and ready to use so do not soak your corks in anything. Soaking corks promotes mold growth inside the cork and that leads to bad flavors in your wine. In a few months open a bottle and sample your wine. Some wines take up to a year to mature in the bottle. Each person also has a taste that appeals to their own senses. A wine’s maturity will hit a place where you are pleased and you will then enjoy what you have created. Congratulations on a job well done. Enjoy the fruits of your labor. Residents seek answers from Pinnacle By Shaun Thomas The Northern connector

PRINCE RUPERT - People want answers when it comes to issues surrounding Westview Terminal, and Counc. Anna Ashley said a response from the Prince Rupert Port Authority simply isn’t enough. Ashley brought a number of concerns about the Pinnacle Renewable Resources pellet export terminal to council chambers at the Jan. 20 meeting, making it the second consecutive meeting issues with Westview have been raised. Although concerns around noise persist, Ashley said she has heard a wide range of complaints. “One concern that I thought was quite valid is that people cannot find a local number or office number for Pinnacle posted anywhere because the road to the waterfront office is closed off. People would like to have a number to call if they have a complaint

rather than go through a third party, in this case the Prince Rupert Port Authority ... the overall gist of what residents told me is that a lot of them felt going to the port authority, not a lot was going to be done. They want to talk to someone directly involved with what is going on,” she said, noting the phone number was just one of several calls and email complaints she has fielded. “Another resident I spoke to talked about a chemical smell, not on a consistently basis but in a number of instances ... I’m also pretty sure they said they would live within our noise bylaw, and that is certainly not happening.” Coupled with the removal of plans for a waterfront walkway that was part of the public discussion around the terminal, Ashley said residents don’t feel Pinnacle is holding up its end of the bargain. “People understand this is industry, but they want what was

promised,” she said. “And people may think this is just a Water St. Issue, but it’s not. The calls I’m getting aren’t just from Water, but from Atlin, Graham and houses in that area.” Counc. Barry Cunningham, who said he was invited to meet with the Prince Rupert Port Authority as a new councillor, said the city and the port need to put any differences aside and sit down and talk. “Right now it’s like two kids in the playground. It’s like ‘I’m not talking with him because he’s not talking with me’,” he said, suggesting Pinnacle advertise their phone number in the media. “Let’s get it out on the table and find out what the hell is going on. They are more than willing to sit and talk with us.” To that end, council passed a motion directing staff to arrange a meeting between the city and port authority.

Terrace council approves a subdivsion By Josh Massey The Northern connector

TERRACE - It took a transformed housing market and a slightly revised building plan, but above all it was the support of nearby property owners that enabled developer Emil Wirtl to win over city council to the idea of granting a zoning amendment for his nine-acre parcel at 5034 McConnell Ave. on the bench. Two other developers, Jim Almgren and Vance Hadley, attended the public hearing last night to vouch for the fact that subdividing large lots is necessary in Terrace to keep up with housing demand, though Hadley acknowledged the challenges of doing so.

Wirtl also had six residents sign a letter he submitted to the city in support of his plan to seek the bylaw amendment that would change the RR1 rural residential classification to the R1 single family residential, thus enabling him to put in 16 to 20 new building lots. An attempt by Wirtl in 2012 to subdivide the property was turned down by council in the face of neighbour opposition. “I am a better prepared this time,” said Wirtl in his address to council. “This time I went to see quite a number of property owners ... so I hope to be more successful this time around.” And successful he was. Council voted

unanimously to accept the staff recommendation and adopt the amendment to the zoning bylaw Wirtl sought. Wirtl told council that the two corner lots facing McConnell would have 90 feet of frontage and the others between 72 and 75 feet. This plan to make the lots larger seemed to please Dave Cater, who lives beside Wirtl’s property, and spoke out against the plan when it was introduced and voted down by council in 2012. “It’s great that Wirtl said the exact size and that you have a plan to have the property owners involved ... that’s what we are after,” said Cater, who said he has considered subdividing but wants to keep his

property intact. Beginning to subdivide that area of McConnell and north of it on the Bench means neighbours have to work together, mainly because new road access would be necessary, those at the meeting were told. A network of potential roads was discussed for that area north of McConnell between Kalum Lake Dr. and Thomas St. Both Cater and the other adjacent property owner Wayne Kirby said they are trying to figure how the subdivisions might affect their property and the community. “We bought that property because of the RR1 designation, we like the size of it. Province to key on disabilities By Tom Fletcher

VICTORIA - The B.C. government has begun a province-wide tour to collect ideas for improving conditions for disabled people, particularly by improving their job prospects. Social Development Minister Don McRae attended the first session Monday evening in his home community of Courtenay, which drew a capacity crowd of 70 people. He plans to attend other ones in the B.C. Interior and Lower Mainland in the coming weeks. The ministry has also established a website for public comments, and one of the more frequent suggestions is for B.C. to increase its social assistance pay-

ment to disabled people. That now stands at $906 per month, including a rent subsidy. McRae said in an interview that major cost items like that will have to wait until B.C.’s economy improves. Meanwhile, efforts to increase employment are showing promise. B.C. has increased the amount of income that can be earned without reducing disability benefits from $500 to $800 a month. McRae said he wants to expand on a pilot project that allows people to earn more than that for part of the year, so they can take advantage of seasonal work. McRae, who had “social innovation” added to his title when he was appointed to the ministry last year, said he was encouraged by a

meeting with a Tim Hortons franchise owner from Ontario who now employs one out of four people with disabilities in his stores. Employees average less than a year in those jobs, but disabled employees stay an average of five years, which saves substantial money on training. “It benefits the disability community, and it also helps his bottom line,” McRae said. Input from the community meetings and website comments are to be used for a policy paper that will be presented at a public forum in June. Meetings took place this week in Prince George and in Quesnel. One is scheduled to take place for the northwest in Terrace on February 24.

Study shows bitumen will sink at sea if sediment is present By Tom Fletcher VICTORIA - A new federal government study has found that diluted bitumen floats in sea water, except when it is mixed with some types of sediment that can make it heavy enough to sink. The study used laboratory simulations of two common types of crude produced from the Alberta oilsands and salt water tanks that approximated wave action. Cam McIntyre, secretary-treasurer of School District 52, received Bowles’ resignation earlier this month and advised the board of his decision at a school board meeting last Tuesday. Prior to his resignation, Bowles had requested an unpaid leave of absence from the board that started in October, 2013. According to McIntyre, Bowles did not provide a reason for stepping down from his position. When reached for comment, Bowles indicated the decision was made for personal reasons he did not wish to expand upon. Trustee Terri-Lynn Huddlestone made a motion to hold the seventh seat vacant instead of holding a byelection, stating it would be a costly endeavour with only a matter of months until the next municipal election. “I acknowledge being down a trustee is difficult thing but ... looking at our budget and what’s in the best interest of our community at this time, I think a byelection is very costly to consider. In just a number of months

diluted bitumen, causing the mixture to sink or be dispersed as floating tarballs.” The study also looked at the 2010 spill of diluted bitumen from an Enbridge pipeline rupture into the Kalamazoo River in Michigan, where the heavy oil was carried nearly 100 kilometres downstream and between 10 and 20 per

RASCAL is a husky cross. He is just over a year old, neutered and UTD on shots. He is an energetic boy in need of an active, catfree home. He gets along well with most dogs - especially when they want to play a lot! He does not like to be home alone and will sing the blues, so he will not be good for apartment/ condo living. He loves everyone he meets and is always ready to go on an adventure.

Terrace chamber to determine Enbridge acceptance By Josh Massey

The Northern connector

TERRACE - Terrace will soon know what its business community thinks of the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway project. The Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce is conducting a survey to see if its members support the plan to build a twin 1,170 kilometre pipeline to ship Alberta crude to a marine export terminal at Kitimat. A list of questions is currently being drafted to send to the cham-

ber’s 287 members, many of whom are local business owners. The survey is in line with a plan adopted by the chamber two years ago. In February 2012, just after Terrace city council voted to oppose Northern Gateway, the chamber executive released a letter saying that while it took a neutral stance to the pipeline project until the review panel had released its report, it did welcome new industry to the area. The chamber board also wrote a letter to Enbridge saying it would maintain a neutral stance on the

project until a decision was reached by the federal joint review panel charged with heading the public consultation segment of the environmental assessment. The joint review panel in December recommended to the federal government that it approve Northern Gateway as long as it could meet 209 conditions. The chamber plans to release the survey to its members by early February, according to executive director Carol Fielding. Fielding thinks chamber members are divided over whether to

support the controversial Enbridge project. She noted that a presentation from Enbridge vice president Janet Holder before the December 19 release of the federal review panel decision was followed by one of the largest discussions in the history of such chamber luncheons that included many critical questions posed to Holder. The chamber board’s 2012 decision had followed Terrace city council’s resolution to oppose the project getting passed with a 5 to 2 vote in February of 2012. The open letter, addressed to

Northern Gateway and other investors, said that, as the “voice of business” the chamber was “very concerned with the latest position of our city council.” While Terrace city council is opposed, the Kitimat council decided some years ago to remain neutral pending the release of the joint review panel review. But Kitimat council recently passed a resolution to conduct a plebiscite within the community to determine how many residents support or don’t support the project. The plebiscite takes place in April.

PRINCE RUPERT - An agreement is now in place for the development of a second LNG Terminal at Grassy Point. On Jan. 16, the Ministry of Natural Gas Development signed a sole proponent agreement with Australian company Woodside for 693.6 hectares of land and 243.9 hectares of foreshore on the southern part of Grassy Point. Under the agreement, Woodside will pay the province $4 million now, another $6 million on or before the first anniversary of the agreement and a further $7 million on the second anniversary for a total payment of $17 million. If the land is acquired by Woodside, the $17 million submitted to the province will be subtracted from the final sale price. Premier Christy Clark lauded the new agreement as another step in growing the industry in the province. “Grassy Point is an ideal site for LNG development and this is the second agreement we’ve signed. Every step forward brings us closer to realizing the opportunity presented by LNG, bringing billions in investment and 100,000 new jobs throughout the province,” said Clark. The agreement is subject to a successful environmental assessment process and the receipt of an export licence from the National Energy Board. The company acknowledges there is still a lot of work ahead. “Woodside looks forward to working with the Government of British Columbia, the First Nations and the community as we

assess the feasibility of an LNG development at Grassy Point,” said Peter Coleman, Woodside CEO and managing director. Woodside, one of four proponents that responded to an expression of interest for Grassy Point early last year, joins Aurora LNG as potential developers after Aurora signed a sole proponent agreement in November. The company is proposing a terminal to move between 1.8 and 2.5 billion cubic feet of LNG per year.

Ernest Gerald Archer January 17, 1933 – January 13, 2014

Born in Montreal, Quebec on January 17, 1933 Ernie, even as a young man, was actively involved in youth groups, hockey and scouts. In 1956, the sea was calling him and he joined the Canadian Navy which launched his career as an Ad Writer, the right arm of his Admiral. On a train trip on August 27, 1959, he would meet the love of his life, Merle, a beautiful air force cryptographer. Ernie and Merle were married on June 25, 1960. In 1962, their first son Dean was born, quickly followed in 1963 by son, Duncan. It was shortly after this point that Ernie retired from Navy life to be at home with the family he loved, moving the family for a short stop in Terrace for the birth of his daughter Dalice, before going to Kitimat and then to the place that would be home, Kemano. Ernie’s life in Kemano started as warehouseman and later promoted to purchaser for Alcan. His volunteer hours were almost endless, as he took on many roles involving Legion, Town Crier, Member of the CORE program, Boy Scouts of Canada and Rod & Gun. Ernie was also the welcome wagon for all new comers, greeting them with a fish he had caught, as well as being active in Toastmasters, Restorative Justice, and a strong supporter of the Army Cadets, formerly Sea Cadets of Kitimat. Many causes, one of them being handicap accessibility, he fought a strong battle for. After a brief retirement in Victoria, Ernie & Merle returned to Kitimat. Known by many in Kitimat for the roses he gave, the candies he never was without and his passion to fight for the underdog. Ernie loved the youth. They are the future and whatever way he could support or mentor he was always willing to do so. Ernie will be missed and lovingly remember by his devoted wife Merle, sons Dean (Cheryl), Duncan (Nancy), daughter Dalice (John), grandsons Nathan, Colin and Aiden, granddaughter Angelina (Joe), and great grandson Tylar. Celebration of Ernie’s life was held at Royal Canadian Legion Br 250 on January 19, 2014. A mass will be held in Ernie’s name Sunday February 2, 2014 at Christ the King Church. Special thanks to Tom & Linda Riley and Nancy Gray. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made in Ernie’s name to Heart & Stroke Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society.

Phyllis Powell

Born August 12, 1921 Died December 21, 2013 at the age of 92 Born in Liverpool, England, the youngest of nine children, all of who pre-deceased her, Phyllis started work in a newspaper/tobacconists at age 12 then at a seafood store. During WWII she was an Air-raid Warden and a munitions worker. Phyllis married John (Jack) Powell in 1946 and lost her first child to birth complications. Her second son was born in 1951 and her youngest in 1954. The whole family moved to Kitimat the first time in 1955, moved back to Liverpool in 1959 and returned to Kitimat in December 1966 for the last time. She learned how to press clothes at their drycleaners and after it closed in 1972, went to work at the hospital in housekeeping, where she worked until she retired in 1986. While she worked in Extended Care she would entertain on pub nights and started doing various acts on the Kitimat Telethon which she did for over 20 years. She still went to pub nights after she retired and was “Lady of the Year” one year and “Citizen of the Year” the next. Phyllis was also the Whitecap Cheerleader to many. Phyllis and Jack helped their son bring up his two children; she would walk her dog, Charlie, accompanied with her husband Jack and hand out “toffees” to everyone they met and dog biscuits to any dogs on the route. She was active in the Royal Canadian Legion from 1967 until she was slowed by health problems in her late 80’s. She was Master-at-Arms for the Ladies Auxiliary a lot of that time and helped to make and serve many meals at banquets. She played Santa Clause for the Legion, Luso, the Kitimat Seniors and other groups around town that asked her to. Phyllis saw the good in everyone, and both people and animals were treated with an open heart. Jack, the love of her life, died in 1997 and a small spark went out of Phyllis and she became more and more reclusive. However, put a microphone in front of her and she was as outgoing as ever, right to the end. She was a mother of two: Edwin (Cindy and family) and Fred (Sue); grandmother of four: John, Ryan, Peggy (Ben) and Megan; great-grandmother of Virginia. Our thanks for the care and dedication from Dr. Huang and the staff and her friends at the Hospital, Homecare and Mountainview Lodge. Our thanks for the help and guidance from the United Church minister Donna Lethbridge and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion with our Celebration of Life for Phyllis that was held on January 11, 2014.

Inside Brousseau heading to Paralympics By Anna Killen

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - It’s official: Terrace’s Caleb Brousseau, 24, will represent Team Canada at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia March 7 - 16, making his Paralympic debut as part of the para-alpine team in men’s sitting. Brousseau finished top 10 in all of his events at his first world competition of the season in Panorama, B.C. earlier this month with a best finish of 7th in Downhill. And last weekend he was at his second world competition of the year at Copper Mountain in Colorado before Tuesday’s official announcement in Calgary. “I feel really confident about the team we’ve put together,” said para-alpine team head coachJean-Sébastien Labrie, in a release announcing the 13 athletes who will make up the team. “The depth of talent is exceptional,” he

said, noting the healthy mix of veteran athletes and young talent. At the Vancouver 2010 Paralympics, Labrie coached the para-alpine team to 13 of Canada’s 19 total medals, including six gold. “Canada has one of the leading para-alpine programs in the world, and this roster of athletes reflects that,” said Brianne Law, athletic director of the para-alpine program at Alpine Canada. “In Vancouver we showed the world some exceptional performances, and I hope that Sochi will be no different. Any one of our athletes has the potential to step up to the challenge on race day and make Canada proud.” Brosseau injured himself snowboarding in 2007, but didn’t let that derail his athletic dreams, quickly taking on sit-skiing and becoming one of the top up-and-coming para-alpine athletes in the country.

KITIMAT - It was Kitimat Ice Demons versus...the Ice Demons. In the team’s final regular season match, the Houston Luckies had to cancel, leaving Kitimat to host an inter-squad game. The season wrapped up with the Demons third place in their division, behind the Smithers Steelheads and the Terrace River Kings in first. CIHL playoffs kick off this weekend. In the west, see Kitimat faceoff against the Smithers while Terrace goes up against the Prince Rupert Rampage.

Rainmakers top tournament in Prince George By Martina Perry

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - The Charles Hays Secondary School (CHSS) junior boys basketball team placed first at the Condor Classic in Prince George earlier this month, winning all three games they competed in. Duchess Park Secondary School hosted the Jan.11/12 tournament that consisted of 12 teams from around the province, with CHSS’ team playing all their games against Prince George schools. “Our tournament championship ... boiled down to a few things,” said Kevin Sawka, junior boys basketball coach. “Our team plays together and we have depth – we had eight different team members score in double digits over our three games. Likewise our team defence was really solid. In two of our games we held opponents to 35 points or less. I can’t say enough about how they work together.” On Friday evening the Rainmakers took the court for their first game of the tournament against Prince George’s Kelly Road Secondary School, with the junior boys beating their opponents 42-35. Grade 10 player Nicolis Camp-

bell was named the Team Player of the Game. The then Rainmakers faced off against Prince George’s College Height Secondary School in their closest game of the tournament, which ended 54-50 in the junior boys’ favour. Bobby Bob, who’s in Grade 10, was named the Team Player of the Game. In the final game of the Condor Classic, CHSS took on tournamenthosts Duchess Park for the team’s most biggest win with a 44-33 final. Grade 10 student Dominic Irvine earned the Team Player of the Game. Although coach Sawka is pleased the team won all three games, the win over Duchess Park was the most satisfying. “Our (Condor Classic) win brings our official record to 10-1 across Northern B.C., the last of which came with a victory over Duchess Park who is currently ranked in the top 14 in the province with an honourable mention ranking,” he said. The team will be hosting the 13th annual Coastal Clash at Charles Hays Secondary School this coming weekend. CONTRIBUTED / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR Games begin at 3 p.m. on Friday and the final will take place at 7 p.m. on Satur- The Charles Hays Secondary junior boys Rainmakers celebrate their tournament victory in Prince George. day.
