A B.C.-based company is reviving a multimillion-dollar housing project in upper Lantzville. North Vancouver’s Lone Tree Properties says it’s ready to dust off plans for the 730-hectare Lantzville Foothills Estates, once called the largest housing development conceived on Vancouver Island. The company became the sole owner of the Foothills property in December after spending more than a year in the courts trying to acquire the front-end parcel from the fore-
closed Lantzville Foothills Estates Inc. The success means an obstacle removed for Lone Tree, which wasn’t previously able to comes to terms with the other developer over issues like density-sharing and latecomer agreements, said chief executive officer Allard Ockeloen, adding the change makes the process of negotiating with Lantzville possible. The company now plans to spend the next year planning the subdivision, speaking with community members and engaging Lantzville officials in development agreement talks. It also still has the task of finding adequate water, which remains a requirement. Ockeloen told the News Bulletin the company has been doing “quite a bit of work” expanding on its water assets and is confident a resolution
will be found. Lone Tree aims to have the Foothills on the real estate market in 2015.“Lantzville is our flagship. It’s the largest of [our] six projects and for us, it’s a very exiting opportunity,” Ockeloen said. “We are bullish about the whole Nanaimo area, we are bullish about the region [and] we love Lantzville and the fact this property sits where it sits, the views ... everything is exciting about this land.” The Lantzville Foothills project was proposed in 2004 and slated to become a mega mixed-housing development with rural lots and multi-family homes but it’s run into obstacles that has kept it on ice, from the struggle to find adequate water supply to foreclosure and divided ownership. u See ‘SUPPLYING’ /10
The Nanaimo’s Empire Days celebration fireworks display is in jeopardy due to a shortfall of $15,000. The Nanaimo Empire Days Society says money is in place for the Victoria Day long weekend event’s May Queen crowning ceremony and downtown parade, but there isn’t enough in its coffers for night-time pyrotechnics. “We only have enough funds to pay for our insurance for the weekend. The trucks, the liability, the plaza – there’s insurance for everything,” said society president Nettley Mark. In the past, the non-profit society has received support via grants from provincial gaming and the City of Nanaimo, donations and fundraising but it says some of the financial assistance is “drying up” and new sponsors and donors are needed. The city’s annual budget has not been finalized yet and even if there is money earmarked for the event, it will likely only be a fraction of what is needed. “Everybody’s got cutbacks,” Mark said. “There are more organizations in town.” The society is hoping for donations from individuals or businesses and while it is seeking denominations of $2,000, $5,000 or $10,000, Mark says any contribution will be appreciated. “Ten dollar, $100, $1,000, $10,000 donations are greatly welcome,” says Mark, adding that the society has heard from the public that the fireworks display would be missed. This year’s celebration will be the 147th consecutive Empire Days event and should money raised exceed $15,000, it will be used toward 2015 celebrations. There is no cost to the public for Empire Days celebration events. People wishing to donate can contact Mark at nettleymark@hotmail.com or 250-751-8567 or Roy Linder at 250-758-2620 or relinder@telus. net.

Tourism grant awarded to interactive science centre By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
Nanaimo tourism officials hope to get a big bang for their buck with the city’s first hands-on sci-
ence studio. Tourism Nanaimo has announced close to $30,000 in cash incentives to
help launch tourism attraction ideas like a new science studio and the community’s first legal mountain bike trail. According to Dan Brady, chairman of
the Nanaimo tourism leadership committee, the city is still more of a stop over than vacation destination and needs more attractions to lure visitors. The
gap has Tourism Nanaimo awarding up to $125,000 a year to different tourism ideas that could set Nanaimo apart from competing Island communities.
The latest funding round included $20,000 for a science studio by the Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society, a group looking to inspire a love TELUS STORE OR AUTHORIZED DEALER

and understanding of science among children. The notfor-profit plans to use the money to create exhibits for an interim space while it searches for a permanent home. Another $5,000 was given to the Summertime Blues Festival for a feasibility study that will look at growing the event and $4,950 was given to the Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club to build the community’s first legal mountain bike trail. “From the tourism destination side of things [funding the science studio] was a no-brainer,” Brady said. “What they are doing already and where they want to go we see this thing as really, really having the opportunity to be a tourist attraction when it gets going. “When you talk to families that have kids [you] hear ... about them all the time going to Vancouver to go to the science centre. People will stay in Nanaimo to do that one attraction.” The science studio, slated to be designed with the help of Vancouver’s Telus World of Science, is the brainchild of co-founders and scientists Liz DeMattia and Sue Durnin. The duo set up the science club just over three years ago and launched its first science programs in city parks in 2012. Within a year, the initiative has bubbled over into schools and day cares with Lego robotic programs and workshops around flight and biology, and a new mobile science van. An interim science studio is the next stepping stone to a larger, permanent science centre, said DeMattia, executive director of the science society. “We are so excited about the tourism funding,” she said. “Without [it] ... the possibility of having a science studio for families in this region wouldn’t be happening this year.” The tourism money pays for 20 per cent of projects’ total cost. news@nanaimobulletin.com

fire guts three condos
I
SEvEN pEOplE left homeless in blaze on Dufferin cres. By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN
Seven people are homeless but no one was injured in a blaze that destroyed three condominium units in Nanaimo’s hospital district Thursday. Firefighters were called out to The Fountains, a 60-unit condominium complex at 1633 Dufferin Cres., shortly before 5 p.m. when residents saw the fire start on the balcony of a second-storey unit. “We were doing a floor-byfloor water shutoff inspection, because we’d had a recent water issue, and we were looking out the window when one of the neighbours saw that a fire had started on the balcony at unit 203,” said Mike Lumley, part-time caretaker for the complex. Resident Charlotte Kinzie said she and her husband heard what sounded like ice falling from the roof. “My husband went to look and there were already flames about a foot high on the [right] side of the balcony – down towards the bottom – and then it took about 10 minutes to get to the roof,” Kinzie said. The fire spread up the side of the building, into the balcony of a third floor apartment, and within 10 minutes – about the time witnesses said the first firefighters arrived on scene – had spread into the roof.
CHRIS BUSH/THe NewS BUlleTIN
Firefighters tackled a blaze in a condominium complex at 1633 Dufferin Cres. Thursday that heavily damaged three units and left seven residents homeless. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Capt. Ennis Mond, Naniamo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer, confirmed the fire started on the deck and quickly burned into one of the unit’s bedrooms. “The sprinkler head inside the bedroom activated and suppressed the fire inside,” Mond said. “On the exterior the fire rolled around inside this balcony and extended up the exterior vinyl siding to the balcony above and caught that on fire and then spread into the roof area and into the soffits and that’s where the guys stopped it.” Mond eliminated an electric barbecue as the cause of the blaze during his investigation of the scene Friday morning. A cause hadn’t been deter-
mined at press time. The flames damaged one second-storey and one thirdstorey condo. A unit directly below the two condos suffered water damage. Karen Lindsay, Nanaimo Emergency Services coordinator, said a family of four renting the condominium where the fire started is not insured and had been given two nights’ lodging by the city emergency program. The owner of that unit, the couple living on the ground floor and the single resident in the third floor unit are insured. Other residents of the complex, estimated at between 80 and 100, were able to return to their homes Thursday. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanaimo fire chief retires Nanaimo fire chief Ron Lambert will retire Feb. 14 after a 44-year career in firefighting. Lambert’s career began in 1970 when he joined the North Oyster Volunteer Fire Department at 16. He became a firefighter with the city in 1981 and took over the position of fire chief in January of 2000, although his official appointment to the position was not made until May of that year. Lambert has led changes in Nanaimo Fire Rescue by increasing skills, competencies and attitudes to raise the quality of fire service. Nanaimo Fire Rescue is recognized as one of the most progressive fire departments in the province. Lambert also promoted a business approach within the depart-
ment to improve cost efficiency by developing an expanded data and analysis system to identify risks, service demands and staffing to improve response times. He consolidated central Island fire dispatching services, directed growth of the emergency management program and developed a recognized and accredited fire and emergency response academy. “Chief Lambert has a long history of service with the City of Nanaimo and has played a major role in the evolution of our fire rescue department and the protection it provides our community,” said Mayor John Ruttan, in a press release. “I wish Ron all the best in his well-earned retirement.”

Tips lead to more than 400 arrests
I
ACToRS RECREATE home invasion. By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN
When crime goes unsolved, one of the sources police turn to for leads that could solve a case is Nanaimo and District Crime Stoppers. January is Crime Stoppers month, when volunteers and the people who have called in tips get a nod of appreciation from local Mounties, even if many of those connected with the program can’t be publicly recognized. Even annual statistics about what crimes were solved through the program aren’t discussed to protect those who might have placed themselves at risk by picking up the phone or passing information along online. “We never want to go back and say a case was solved directly because of Crime Stoppers,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
CHRIS BUSH/THe NewS BUlleTIN
Alex Sangster, left, of Vancouver Island University’s drama department, threatens fellow actor Brian Marsh of Yellow Point Drama Group on Thursday during the filming of a Crime Stoppers re-enactment of an unsolved break-in at a home on Meredith Road.
“All we can say is Crime Stoppers assisted in a number of investigations and is one of many tools used. It all goes back to the anonymity of the tipster. It’s like a silent success we have with them. We just can’t speak to specific cases.” Since guaranteed anonymity for tipsters is key to the program, little can be discussed about Crime Stoppers’ success other than through the statis-
tics generated from the ongoing fight against crime that can be attributed to Crime Stoppers operations. Since 1990, Nanaimo and District Crime Stoppers has approved $93,000 in awards and received 5,251 tips leading to 472 arrests. The program’s efforts have led to $1 million in weapons seizures, $1.2 million in stolen property recovered and have helped take almost $9 mil-
lion in illicit drugs off the streets. Crime Stoppers gets no government funding and relies solely on fundraising and private donations. Success of Nanaimo’s program also depends on community support. In recent years, Crime Stoppers has been implemented in all local high schools. Local media outlets also partner with police and Crime Stoppers to help ensure success of the Nanaimo program, which has won 10 provincial awards since 2010. Shaw TV, which has filmed 18 award-winning Crime Stoppers crime re-enactments, was at work Thursday recreating an unsolved burglary from December when a husband and wife woke up in the night to find a man in their home who pulled a knife on the husband when he was confronted. The couple and culprit are played by local actors from Yellow Point Drama Group and Vancouver Island University’s drama program. When broadcasted, the re-enactment will

en recovering from addiction can find shelter and support to help them move forward in life through the Nanaimo branch of the Victoria Human Exchange Society. Mary Gordon House, named for one of the society’s founders who died in 2011, opened in December of last year at 1435 Waddington Rd. The home offers seven beds and augments Esther’s House, a six-bed home created by the Nanaimo Transitional Housing Society – a division of the human exchange society – that opened at the corner of Kennedy and Albert streets in downtown Nanaimo in 2011. The organization searches for affordable properties that can be converted into men’s shelters and will even take over rental homes that have become nuisance properties, saving the home CHRIS BUSH/THe NewS BUlleTIN and providing a steady rental income Richard Carlton, left, chops up vegetables for dinner while fellow Mary Gordon House resifor property owners. dent Mitch checks messages on his smart phone. got to find a way to repair or replace it. “It’s tough because a lot of the gentlemen coming out, they don’t really have anything,” Tim said. “So food is big one. For some of them, clothing. Anything that we can do to help is really appreciated.” Esther’s and Mary Gordon houses get some support from the Sisters of St. Ann, based in Victoria and sometimes the public chips in too. One elderly couple, dubbed the house grandparents, has taken Esther’s House under its wing and regularly goes out and fills a car with groceries for the residents. Mitch, 31, spent 14 months at Guthrie House and is now attending university, working toward his social services diploma. From there he plans to go to the University of Victoria to earn his bachelor’s degree in social work. He also gives talks at local high schools, telling students his story. “It was drugs,” Mitch said. “It’s what’s underneath the drugs. That was just our coping mechanism – a way of coping with stressors in life. Abuse, neglect, abandonment and all that kind of stuff.” Mitch knows to the day how long he has been clean, which has been more than 17 months. “You can’t just change one aspect of your life and expect results,” Tim said. “You have to change everything ... Mary Gordon House and the Guthrie program. You almost can’t have one without the other.” Richard Carlton, who has been previously profiled in the Bulletin, is another recent arrival at Mary Gordon House. “I was staying at a friend’s, well, couch surfing, pretty well, so I was kind of losing focus,” Carlton said. Carlton saw the warning signs of being drawn back toward his former life when the things that were supporting his recovery started dropping out from under him, which included the loss of a job and a friend who died. “I should have reached out a little more and I did eventually,” Carlton said. “There’s help if you ask for it. Things are going good now. Having the support around definitely makes a difference.” Unfortunately Mary Gordon House and Esther’s House can only offer about a dozen beds for men who, without the support the program provides, often never survive the addiction cycle. “If I didn’t have Esther’s House and then here, I’d probably be dead,” Tim said. Race seeking candidates Now we know the when. Perhaps soon we’ll learn the who. The B.C. NDP will announce its new leader to succeed Adrian Dix on Sept. 28. That leader will be chosen by party members in a vote to be conducted Sept. 24-27 over the phone and online. The party’s president, Craig Keating, said he’s looking forward to an “exciting leadership election with great candidates.” Except, so far there aren’t any candidates – great or otherwise. Three federal NDP MPs from B.C. have said they’re not interested. Peter Julian, Fin Donnelly and Nathan Cullen all bowed out even before they bowed in. Kennedy Stewart, the MP for BurnabyDouglas, is still mulling his decision. As is Jinny Sims, the federal NDP representative from Newton-North Delta. Their reticence is understandable. As members of the official opposition in Ottawa, they’re all strong voices for issues they and their constituents believe in. They’re members of a party that captured voters’ imaginations in the last federal election and continues to get attention countering decisions and legislation made by Stephen Harper’s Conservative government. B.C. politics, on the other hand, is a snake pit. Nobody knows that better than Dix, who seemed to have victory in last spring’s provincial campaign in the bag but found himself delivering a concession speech instead. Now that the date has been set for the party’s leadership vote, most observers expect candidates to begin announcing their intentions well ahead of the September date with the party’s rank-andfile members. And no doubt as those names are known, and those candidates start hustling for support, the always entertaining world of B.C. politics will burn with renewed energy and entertainment.

expansion aren’t great. Despite a boom in oil sands growth and production, “Alberta has run consecutive budget deficits since 2008 and since then has burned through $15 billion of its sustainability fund,” according to an article on the Tyee website. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says Alberta’s debt is now $7 billion and growing by $11 million daily. As for jobs, a 2012 report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives shows less than one per cent of Canadian workers are employed in extraction and production of oil, coal and natural gas. Pipelines and fossil fuel development are not great longterm job creators. Beyond the danger to the environment and human health, the worst risk from rapid expansion of oil sands, coal mines and gas fields and the infrastructure needed to transport the fuels is the carbon emissions from burning their products – regardless of whether that happens here, in China or elsewhere. Many climate scientists and energy experts, including the International Energy Agency, agree that to have any chance of avoiding catastrophic climate change, we must leave at least two-thirds of our remaining fossil fuels in the ground. The question isn’t about whether to use rail or pipelines. It’s about how to reduce our need for both.

Burst dams would be like a 10-tonne bomb
Energy corporations reap rewards while we citizens take the risks To the Editor,
Re: Neil Young’s latest hit, Editorial cartoon, Jan. 16. Corporations deny hazards as long as long as possible. They deny that drilling and fracking is sucking northern lakes and rivers dry and contaminating million of gallons of water. Gravity of transporting risks over land and sea of explosive fuels or oil sands diluted in chemicals is denied. Any odds of devastations to environment and people is played down automatically. Companies camouflage greedy intentions with alluring job promises to get locals and governments all work out.
So cheerleading politicians covet to enlarge fossil fuel extractions instead of building more efficient mass transit. Although human lives and environment are non-refundable, this energy scavenger hunt is going on without mercy. Since damage prevention reduces income, many companies readily take risks. Extra energy, not improved quality, enables them to make, advertise and market more awful nonsense. For a profit they would sell a rope to be hanged with. Except this time the noose is around our necks too.

the energy of the water they hold back is the same. Regardless of how nice it is to walk through the park, the water held back by the #11 dams is still dangerous and it should not be there. That is why the B.C. Dam Safety Branch has declared them the most hazardous structures in the province, and has ordered them to be removed. The Colliery Dams Park Preservation Society is the most effective com-
munity group in the recent history of Nanaimo. That doesn’t mean it is right. Jeff Solomon is determined that Nanaimo spends money it doesn’t have on two dams that should not be there. There is no conspiracy to rob the Harewood community of its park. We can hire as many engineers as you like, but the problem will still be there. The dams need to go. #12

Mental illness should be addressed in straightforward manner To the Editor,
Re: It isn’t easy to talk about mental health, Letters, Jan. 23. Some combinations of words I hear frequently, puzzle me. I wonder if in using euphemistic terms we are doing more harm than good. We know that brain disorders are medical disorders, that is, diseases, or illnesses of the brain which require medical treatment and professional clinical help. By focusing on clear and meaningful language such as neuropsychiatric disorder, serious or persistent mental illness or brain disorders, or neurobiological disorders, maybe then there will be less stigma, less discrimination, and more emphasis on research and treatment, and maybe in the
future, even prevention. Two other words which puzzle me are the words prevention and recovery when talking about mental illness. Until we know the cause how can we prevent? Just like diabetes there is no recovery for serious or persistent mental illness; there is only management with scientific, evidence-based medical-clinical treatment. And yes, if treated, most can live a fulfilling, rewarding life.

Re: City overstates flood danger, Letters, Jan. 16. Let me try to clarify the Colliery dams issue. The two Colliery dams hold back 220,000 cubic metres of water. That water weighs 220,000 metric tonnes and it is about 50 metres higher than the Harewood community. That gives it what physicists call ‘potential energy’ in the same way that a mainspring gives energy to a clock. If

Supplying water to Foothills development key issue for project u From /1 In 2010, the property was carved into two parcels with the largest sold to Lone Tree Properties. The company and its assets were purchased by Storm Mountain Development Corporation two years later as it expanded its presence in B.C. The upper Lantzville property remains the company’s largest buy and while it’s now looking forward to potentially
being the first to offer new product on the Lantzville real estate market, it’s also optimistic about what is happening next door. “Nanaimo has something right now that just looks really bullish, like the next 10 to 15 years to me appear like [it] is going to get an unfair share of growth ... in relation to some other areas in B.C.,” said Ockeloen, adding that in the last
two years the Harbour City seems to have found its way onto the map with additions like a convention centre, airport improvements and a new downtown hotel. “There are good things on the horizon.” The Foothills Estates is anticipated to be similar to original plans, with roads roughed in and much of the infrastructure and engineering designs already complete. Half the land
is still slated to become park while the rest will be mixed housing. The challenge ahead is tapping into water, according to Ockeloen, who said Lone Tree is working to expand its supply through drilling efforts. It is also waiting to see what happens with the water-sharing deal between Lantzville and the City of Nanaimo and could include the resource in its development negotiations.
Lantzville mayor Jack de Jong says he is optimistic the developer and district will find an acceptable agreement now that there is single ownership. He also said he’s willing to potentially renegotiate the water deal with the City of Nanaimo around the housing project, which he says will be beneficial for both communities. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Record deal a vindication for rock band of brothers BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN
Brothers Taylor and Cole Perkins, along with Dan and Dustin Steinke were nearing the end of high school when they had to make a critical decision. “All our friends were going on to school, college, university, things like that,” Perkins said. “Right around there we were in talks about getting a record deal.” The two sets of brothers were members of an increasingly popular rock band known as Bleeker Ridge. The Orillia, Ont.-based band had been generating attention from various labels for some time and were faced with the decision to pursue music full time or attend post-secondary school. “All your friends are going to do something different and you’re taking this chance on a music career, which is one of the hardest things to do,” Perkins said. “So, we stuck it out [with music] and thank goodness we did.” The decision to pursue music full time paid off in 2010 when they were signed to Roadrunner Records. Perkins explained that being signed to a record deal was vindication for the band. “When you start a band you think ‘oh we will get signed this will be easy,’ but when we finally did it and we actually signed our names in blood pretty much, we were all really jazzed about it,” Perkins said. “It was good to say to people to say that we did this, it was a good feeling for sure.” On Wednesday (Jan. 29) Bleeker Ridge will be making its first-ever performance in Nanaimo, alongside Buckcherry at the Port Theatre. Bleeker Ridge originally formed in 2003 after two sets of brothers saw each other playing at local venues in Orillia. “We [Taylor and Cole] started going to local blues places,”
Perkins said. “Orillia is a small town so we got to play in bars, and me and my brother saw the other two guys play, and then they saw us play, and a week or two later they called us up and we started jamming and we did a record, like, nine weeks later.” This past June the band released their fourth album, Four, their second under Roadrunner Records. “We made the record all on our own and we didn’t do any co-writes or anything. We really went back to more classic rock feel, we just naturally went there,” Perkins said. “It’s doing really well and everyone is starting to dig it.” The band resorted to using PledgeMusic.com, a site where fans can donate money to fund various projects, as a means to finance the album. “We did this basically all on our own,” he said. “We got picked up by Universal after we made the record.” “There are some cities that are better than others ... I think the small towns and the places that are really excited to see us are fun because they don’t have too much going on all the time. I would definitely say the smaller cities are the more fun to play in show wise,” Perkins said. Bleeker Ridge has also had the luxury of sharing the stage with a handful of respected bands such as Buckcherry, Theory of a Deadman, Airbourne, Creed, Puddle of Mudd, The Trews, Three Days Grace and Finger Eleven. “We’ve learned a lot from them [Buckcherry],” he said. “We’ve toured with them a few times and it’s pretty cool to play with those dudes. There show is amazing and their energy is awesome and we learn a lot that way.” The concert starts at 7 p.m. For more information on Bleeker Ridge, please visit www. facebook.com/BleekerRidge.

THE NEWS BULLETIN
When it’s all over, award winning blues artist Matt Andersen will have logged over 23,200 kilometres across North America. The New Brunswick singer is currently in the beginning stages of a lengthy tour, which will see him perform at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo tonight (Jan. 28). “I’ve never done my own show there,” Andersen said. “I am looking forward to having my own headlining show there.” Andersen’s tour kicked off on Jan. 10, in Somerville, Mass., and has already taken him through Pennsylvania,

Ohio, Oregon and Washington State. His performance in Nanaimo is the first of four Island shows, which includes stops in Campbell River, Powell River and Victoria. The New Brunswick native has been involved in music since an early age. Before his solo career and time with Flat Top, Andersen originally started out playing the tuba and the trumpet before progressing to the guitar. “On the East coast music is a big part of the culture. There were always musical instruments around,” Andersen said. “I started out in school bands playing horns.” Andersen then moved on to the guitar when he was 14 years old. He said his influences include artists such as Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt and Eric Clapton. “The Eric Clapton acoustic album was one of the first albums I really fell in love with

when I first started,” Andersen said. On Feb. 4, Andersen, whose cover of Bill Wither’s ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ has received over 900,000 views on YouTube, will release his newest album, Weightless to True North Records. “I really feel like these are some of the best songs I’ve written for sure,” he said. “They are all co-written and I did that to keep myself from sounding like myself.” Two of the songs on Andersen’s newest record are cowrites with fellow Maritime musician, Joel Plaskett. “I’ve never spent a whole lot of time with Joel so it was really cool to work with him and finally make that connection,” Andersen said. “We hit it off really well. We’re a couple of music geeks so for the first couple of hours we sat there and played each other tunes.” ◆ See ‘PERFORMER’ /13 DIGITAL SOUND

Nanaimo Conservatory of Music Presents
JANE COOP Solo Piano Recital
Gala taps Rod Stewart impersonator A renowned Rod Stewart impersonator is coming to Nanaimo and it’s all for a good cause. Rod Stewart impersonator Kenny Holliday will be playing a handful of Rod Stewart’s classic tunes at the Zonta Club of Nanaimo’s 11th annual Zonta Red Gala on Feb. 7. “This year we are excited to have Kenny Holliday, awardwinning Rod Stewart imper-
sonator. In the past Kenny has dazzled attendees with his performance and tickets are selling fast,” said event chairwoman Robyn Austin. The gala, which is the club’s biggest fundraising event of the year, will be held at the Coast Bastion Inn at 6 p.m. Proceeds from the event will go toward the Heart and Stroke Foundation, as well as other local organizations that support women.
“As an example, over the past 10 years proceeds have raised $51,874 towards women’s heart health all the while raising awareness of the status of women to over 2,000 women who have attended the event,” said Austin. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased by contacting Barb 250-758-2267 info@nanaimozonta.org. A $30 charitable tax receipt will be issued by the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Order of Canada recipient and pianist Jane Coop will be showcasing her talents in Nanaimo next month. Coop, who has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including the Beijing Concert Hall and John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, will be performing at the Port Theatre on Feb. 16. The concert will feature works from composers such as Beethoven, Scarlatti, Brahms, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. “I am incredibly excited to introduce Beethoven’s Sonata in D major during my Nanaimo program, which is a wonderful piece that I have wanted to learn for decades, but only now just found the time for,” Coop said, in a press release. In addition to her performance, Coop will also be holding a public workshop to coach young local piano players on Feb. 15 at 2:30 p.m. The workshops are designed for advanced young piano players in the Nanaimo region. King and tell him that he is a blues artist. “The blues is definitely a big influence in what I do … but I grew up with all different kinds of music. There is lots of country in there, lots of folk stuff and classic rock as well,” he said. “My vocals lend more towards the blues and soul.” Andersen, is no stranger to winning awards. In 2013 he took home the European Blues Award for Best Solo/Acoustic Act and in 2012 he won three Maple Blues Awards. “It’s really nice to get that kind of recognition from the industry and from fans too,” Andersen said. “I love the ones where fans voted for me . . . WINE OF Best of the Best THE MONTH August 27 2013 Chardonnay – AUSTRALIA (white)
This ever-fashionable dry, medium-bodied blast of flavour elbows its way into many a wine cellar. Features green apple, pear, pineapple and subtle butterscotch oak. Cabernet Sauvignon – AUSTRALIA (red) It built its reputation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, but Australia may be its true home. Aromas of black cherry, pepper, plum and delicious hints of cassis, spicy oak and chocolate. Balanced at the finish.

In the wee hours of January 20th, 2014 our father, grandfather, mentor and friend was taken by the angels above. Dad was born in Linlithgow, Scotland and immigrated to Canada in August of 1921. As a young man, he worked in the mines in Cumberland and then in the forest industry on Vancouver Island as a faller. Dad joined the Canadian Scottish Regiment in 1939 and served overseas during World War II returning to Canada in 1945. He was one of the fortunate who returned to start a family. Dad continued to work as a logger and then a Commissionaire until his retirement. Robert is survived by his loving children: Robert Miller (Glenda), Sharon Thomas, Jack Miller (Lois), Marilyn Smith (Wade), Rod Miller (Catherine), and Heather Tilley (Randy); step-daughter, Gloria Hallstrom (Dave) and family; step-son Ben Williams (Barb); fourteen grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren with number twentytwo on the way. He will be fondly remembered by a loving and caring lady, Ueanna Marshall as well as many long-time friends and extended family who will miss him dearly. May he roam in the fields of heather with his beloved dog Clyde, fish in lakes filled with an abundance of trout, have his motor start on the first pull on every fishing trip, and have the sun shine on every camping trip! A tea will be held for family and friends at Cavallotti Lodge, 2060 East Wellington Road, Nanaimo, BC on February 1st, 2014 from 1-5p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, in his memory. In a small wooden box, penned by his own hand dated February 1987, was a letter left to his children with these final words to us‌ â€œâ€ŚI don’t want you to grieve for me as life must go on for you. So we’ll meet again one day. Love, Dadâ€? May you rest your head in peace Dad. You will forever be in our hearts.

TOM FLETCHER (Black

BC Hydro stands to lose $1 billion over the next four years by selling surplus energy critic John Horgan power at a loss, NDP said yesterday. Horgan renewed the NDP’s long-standing criticism of the B.C. Liberal government’s push for electricity self-sufficiency, and its requirement that all new clean energy sources be privately developed. Long-term purchase contracts signed under that policy mean BC Hydro can expect to lose more than $1 billion by 2015, Horgan said at a news conferenc at the legislature. He e based his calculatio ns on documents BC Hydro released when it filed its application last week for an environmental assessmen t for the proposed Site C dam on the Peace River. The environmental impact shows an expected surplus statement for the dam of 5,200 gigawatt-hours for 2013 and similar surpluses out to 2015. Horgan said the current informatio n suggests BC Hydro will have a surplus for the next 10 years. “We’re purchasing at $94 a megawatt-hour, and we can sell it for $37 a megawatt-hour (on the spot market),” Horgan said. “The net difference being $57 per megawatt -hour for power we do not need, power that BC Hydro was forced to purchase because of aggressive B.C. Liberal energy policy.” Energy Minister Rich Coleman said Horgan is using a “snapshot” of today’s low spot market and extending the same demand and prices far into the future. The province has numerous mine projects underway or seeking approval, and liquefied natural gas export proposals are proliferatin g in northern B.C. that are also likely to increase demand for electricity , he said.

Clippers score identical overtime wins

“
JR. A HOCKEY team wins 4-3, then 4-3 again.
Definitely not lacking in drama. Hopefully fans felt rewarded.
BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
It was a case of déjà vu, and that was just fine with the Nanaimo Clippers. The city’s junior A hockey team won backto-back home games on the weekend by identical 4-3 scores, both in overtime, beating the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Friday and then the Powell River Kings on Saturday at Frank Crane Arena. What’s more, Nanaimo’s Brendan Taylor scored the overtime winner in both games, with both goals assisted by Luke Sandler. “Definitely not lacking in drama,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. “Hopefully the fans felt rewarded, I’m sure they did, and I know we sure did as a team. It was a really good weekend for us.” On Saturday against the division-leading Kings, the Clips got off to a fast start. Mason Mitchell got off a quick

job on the penalty kill and Jacob Hanlon scored short-handed. In the third the visitors scored with five minutes left to force overtime. On the winning goal late in double OT,
Sandler did some good work along the half wall and got the puck to Taylor who did the rest. Vandekamp said his team was resilient in handling the flow of the game.
“[We] didn’t get too flat,” he said. “We stayed up and kept working hard and stuck with it.” Jayson Argue was the winning goalie, making 39 saves as his team was outshot 42-27.

VIU women stay perfect
I
MARINER MEN win one of two games on home court.
Playing their first home games in more than two months, the VIU women showed off their capabilities on the court. Vancouver Island University’s women’s basketball team (14-0) maintained its perfect record in PacWest play with wins over the Douglas Royals and Langara Falcons on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Mariners women flushed the Royals by a 77-57 score on Friday night, then grounded the Falcons 65-35 the following afternoon. M ’s f o r w a r d S h a y n a Worthington had a strong and consistent weekend, leading her team in scoring and rebounding both games with 25 points and nine boards in both outings. Jocelyn Jones and Amanda Tapia scored 14 points apiece on Friday and Jones had 18 on Saturday. In men’s action, VIU defeated Douglas 91-73 but was stopped 89-74 the next day by Langara, the nation’s top-ranked team. “At every position they’re a little bigger than us. It makes all our stuff difficult…” said Matt Kuzminski, M’s coach. “For us to beat them it’s going to take close to our best game, close to our perfect game.” VIU made it close at times, but in crunch time Langara was impenetrable on defence and fluid on offence. “I’m happy with how hard the guys played and the effort they played with, but we didn’t do enough things to get the job done,” Kuzminski said. Brandon Jones scored 23 points to lead the Mariners in that one and Harrison Stupich scored 18. In the previous day’s victory, Stupich led the way with 24 pints and nine rebounds, Clayton Billett scored 17 points and Seth Goodman had 14. GAME ON … VIU’s basketball teams are on the road Friday (Jan. 31) and Saturday, taking on the Kwantlen Eagles and the Columbia Bible College Bearcats, respectively. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Two teams isn’t too much hockey for Bestwick His team might not make the playoffs, but one way or another, Bill Bestwick is staying in the game. The city councillor visited the Nanaimo Ice Centre on Thursday for the first time since being named coach of the Oceanside Generals earlier this month. His Gens were shut out 4-0 by the Nanaimo Buccaneers, but Bestwick saw some positives in his team’s work ethic. “This team isn’t quitting,” he said. “We’re trying real hard.
We’re going to play right till the end.” Bestwick was fired by the junior A Victoria Grizzlies in December when a new ownership group took over that team. Not only was he quickly snapped up by the Generals, but he also agreed to work with the Nanaimo Clippers as a consultant. “The title is senior adviser and that, I think, means oldage pensioner,” he panned. There are no specific job duties, but he’s had dialogue
with the Clips about brand activation and other initiatives. “I’ll contribute in any way that the organization feels as though I can contribute in bringing a public-relations profile, or assist in the management structure, or scouting,” he said. “Anything that I can do to help the team take strides in the community.” For an expanded version of this article, please visit www. nanaimobulletin.com/sports. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

New Millstone River trail possible with land purchase
I
PATH WOULD run from Maffeo Sutton Park in downtown to East Wellington Road. BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN
T
he city has purchased the missing link in what could give Nanaimo residents a new nature excursion. On Dec. 17 the city paid $340,000 for a plot of land at 155 Westwood Rd. The 2.9-hectare lot is a narrow strip of land that runs along the west side of Westwood Road between Cathers Drive and East Wellington Road and represents the last link in a chain of land parcels and parks that will make up the Millstone River Greenway. The acquisition means people will one day be able to run, walk or cycle through parks linked by an unbroken trail from the mouth of the Millstone River at
Maffeo Sutton Park in downtown Nanaimo to a new park to be developed at East Wellington Road. “That’s actually the last piece of land we needed to complete the actual trail network and the park network,” said Bill Corsan, the city’s manager of real estate. The next step is for the parks department to start on a planning process that will look at all the lands the city has purchased along the route, starting with a 12-ha property along East Wellington Road, Corsan said. The Westwood Road property could be developed as a park in itself or serve as a trail right of way to an existing gravel trail along the Millstone between the Parkway Trail to Westwood Road with
CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN
A section of trail that currently terminates on the east side of Westwood Road will soon become part of the Millstone River Greenway, linking property recently purchased by the city on the west side of Westwood Road between Cathers Drive and acreage at the corner of the Westwood and East Wellington Road.
the larger property at East Wellington. The city has to consider what it has in hand and decide how the parks and trails will be developed. That process will involve public
consultation, but so far no start date for the park development process has been set. “There’s a plan to have the trail, but what the parks department wants
to do is work with the community, kind of develop really specific kind of site plan, especially for the East Wellington Road parcel and then these lands will all be part of that plan-
ning process,” Corsan said. Parks on the trail will include MaffeoSutton Park, Barsby Park, Bowen Park, Buttertubs Marsh and what will become a new park
at East Wellington Road. “In planner jargon we call it a string of pearls, so you have a series of pearls in between the trail kind of connecting you to each of them,” Corsan said. The Millstone River Greenway will someday run all the way to the source of the Millstone River at Brannen Lake and is one of several proposed trails that will ultimately connect outlying areas through the city. Others include the Waterfront Trail that will ultimately connect to Departure Bay beach and a trail that will run through Nanaimo’s south end, connecting the Nanaimo River Estuary, Duke Point and other trails in Cedar and Yellow Point. photos@nanaimobulletin.com
