Offering a financial leg-up for future purveyors of hospitality NELSON STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser

A newly created bursary to help students studying the hotel industry, will be handed out in Nelson next month. Atlific Hotels & Temple Hotels Inc. has created the Robert Leoppky Bursary which will award four Selkirk College Resort & Hotel Management Program students $2,500 each.

“Atlific is proud to extend Bob’s legacy by offering students the opportunity to follow in his footsteps...” Robert Chartrand

Leoppky passed away at the age of 59 last March after a brave battle with cancer. Mr. Leoppky’s career encompassed 40 years in the hotel industry and he was Atlific’s vice-president operations, overseeing operations in Western Canada. “Atlific is proud to extend Bob’s legacy by offering students the opportunity to follow in his footsteps with these four bursaries,” said Rob-

Robert Leoppky Victory Arts

ert Chartrand, executive vice-president, Atlific Hotels. “His contributions to the hospitality industry were exemplary and this was the perfect opportunity to give back to the community. “The Robert Leoppky Bursary will ensure that his legacy lives on for future generations.” Atlific Hotels is one of the leading hotel management companies in Canada, operating more than 55 hotels. The company has 13 hotels in BC including the Victoria Marriott Inner Harbour and the Vancouver Island Conference Centre in Nanaimo. Arni Thorsteinson, CEO of Temple Hotels Inc. said “Bob made a significant contribution to the growth and management of Temple Ho-

tels and we are proud and honoured to be a part of the Robert Leoppky Bursary.” Selkirk College is excited to partner with an industry leader and proud to help honour Leoppky’s contribution to the hospitality industry. “These bursaries provide valuable assistance to students pursuing their education,” said Harry Pringle, Selkirk College’s Resort & Hotel Management Program department head. “Many students need to work while in school just to pay the basics. These bursaries allow students to invest more of their time to research and studies. “We thank Atlific for their very real commitment to hospitality education and feel honoured to be the school of choice for their donation. Mr. Leoppky was very committed to this industry and we hope our graduates will help continue his legacy.” The Selkirk College Resort & Hotel Management is a two-year program based out of the Tenth Street Campus in Nelson. Students gain a thorough understanding of the tourism and

hospitality industry. Graduates become proficient in management accounting, organizational leadership, business communications, hotel and resort manage-

ment, food and beverage management, and event planning. The partnership with Selkirk College will extend beyond this year and will also include an advisory

role with the pro- Nelson’s Mary Hall. For more informagram. The four bursaries tion on Atlific Howill be handed out on tels please visit www. SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS

PETS on PARADE Senior Adoptions: Currently at the Trail Regional BCSPCA, there are many senior cats over 8 years old awaiting their forever retirement homes. Due to much advancement in the field of veterinary medicine, cats are living to the age of 18 years on average, so choosing to adopt a senior cat does not mean that you won’t be able to experience many years with your new feline family member. There are many benefits to taking on the responsibility of a senior cat. At their age, they are already litter trained and have been in the habit of using the box for many years. You can also be sure that the crazy kitten energy is long gone, leaving the cat happy to have a nice warm lap to lie in. They are also more independent than kittens and young adults as they are happy to sit in a window and nap instead of needing constant attention and playtime. Older cats will let you into their personality early on once they are settled in their new home, so you can usually get to know them quite quickly, where a kitten ‘s personality can change dramatically from baby to adult.

important to routinely check the cat’s mouth. Senior cats can be more prone to health issues as they age, so that is a something that must be carefully considered. Regular vet checks are needed and sometimes additional testing to ensure your senior kitty is aging as well as they can be. Through the Trail BCSPCA, we also offer cats above the age of eight years old at half price, making them 70 dollars plus tax. You can also have the peace of mind knowing that the cats are already spayed or neutered, and their vaccines are up to date. If the cat was spayed or neutered while here at the shelter, they would also have received a tattoo, which is a great way of identification for your new animal if they get lost.

There are some issues that will hit an older cat long before they would hit a kitten or young adult. After the age of eight, it is recommended that the cat’s teeth are regularly checked and cleaned by the vet when needed. Tartar build up that isn’t addressed can actually affect the organs, and the cat’s ability to eat. That is why it is so

Patrick’s best game was in Rossland

greg Nesteroff West kootenay Advertiser

Hockey legend Lester Patrick’s incredible career included several Stanley Cup wins as a player and coach. He also co-founded and played in Western Canada’s first professional league and came out of retirement at age 44 to tend goal as an emergency replacement in a Stanley Cup final. Yet when asked to name his most memorable game, his mind flashed back to the Kootenays, where he and brother Frank played for Nelson while working for their father’s lumber company. According to a Canadian Press story in the Regina Leader Post of May 22, 1957: “Lester recalled in an interview that the greatest game of his career was played in a small open-air rink in Rossland during the 1907-08 season ... At the Rossland winter carnival a few weeks later, Rossland led Nelson 4-0 at halftime. In the second half, despite being a man short, Nelson scored three times — including two from Lester — to make it 4-3. However, Rossland still won. At the time, the carnival boasted of being the BC hockey championship, although ongoing disputes between Nelson and Rossland over refereeing and scheduling somewhat sullied its reputation. You can learn more about the Patricks and the history of the carnival in Ronald Shearer’s Mid-Winter Mardi Gras: Rossland’s Original Winter Carnival at rosslandmuseum.ca, and Craig Bowlsby’s book The Knights of Winter.

Plan pitched to revitalize by lighting up Victoria Street bridge Sheri Regnier West Kootenay Advertiser

As the Silver City readies to begin Phase 2 of its downtown revitalization plan, a community group approached council with a bright idea that could light up Victoria Street year round and draw more people to the downtown core.

Tuesday All Seats $7

Mike Martin, chair of the Downtown Opportunities and Action Committee (DOAC) brought his idea to light up the Victoria Street Bridge to the governance meeting Jan 13. The DOAC’s plan to install 128 programmable LED coloured lights across the four arches and 96

static white lights on each bridge column, would add an immediate visual impact, explained Martin. “Bridge lighting is exciting and is limitless with how you can change the colours to reflect the season,” he said. “I think for that reason it will be an attraction and conversation point in town.”

Council has already allotted $363,000 in the city’s 2014 budget to add four major gateway structures in the downtown with the project set to begin this spring. Martin proposed that those features be delayed or cancelled to make way for the $350,000 bridge lighting plan which would add more visual appeal than installing four red arches on op-

posite ends of the Victoria Street, the major artery through Trail. “The gateways are markers and may get lost in the city landscape or clutter of downtown,” said Martin. “The bridge is a focal point and is a more defined feature, and bridge lighting will really be a stand out.” Additionally, he included the future

This thriving well-respected guild has at least 42 years of organized history in the Castlegar area. For many years locals and tourists have been enjoying the goings on at their shop within the Doukhobor Discovery Centre. Well, things are about to change what with the partial move last Sunday, January 19, 2014. Staying within the Centre, just a few steps down the sidewalk, are the new digs.

This larger space, now three rooms, is indicative of the activity and growth of the weavers and spinners. This new facility boasts new floors, fresh paint, more windows and new fixtures. The membership is growing, and more equipment being added, including the 20 wonderful, stackable comfy chairs due to the generosity of member Kerri Saari and her son. Silver Kettle Village is a great place to live. My wife and I love our spacious, private suite. For the last few years, those sites have been an attraction with highlighted beams and trusses and touted a community milestone that connects neighbourhoods with colourful displays that do not cause glare to motorists. To aid with funding the project, Martin suggested the committee could approach local businesses for corporate sponsorship, and recognize those partnerships during a lighting ceremony and on a plaque at the bridge gateway. Council will consider Martin’s proposal during budget talks, confirmed Trail Mayor Dieter Bogs. “Our first budget meetings begin in the next few weeks,” said Bogs. “And the option of bridge lighting will be

One bad Durango in a good way

The 2014 Dodge Durango test truck was the perfect Christmas treat. This is the perfect kind of vehicle to have when you need to cart around extra kids and family from events like skating parties to Christmas dinners to anything else that needs getting done over the festive season. With three rows of seats and seating for six or seven passengers, the Durango is a large comfortable vehicle for any large family or a family of four that needs to take extra people to soccer or hockey practice. The Durango tester was the top of line Citadel model with a beautiful two-tine interior, large polished wheels and classy looking grille. It was not fitted with winter tires but we had no skiing plans, plus all Durango models come with AWD as standard equipment.

Looks I can’t remember the last time a large SUV turned heads but this model had passersby, friends, and family all taking notice. Several neighbours commented on the stylish “racetrack” rear light bar that has migrated from the Dodge Dart and Charger sedans to this big SUV for 2014. Because of standard AWD and other packaging changes, the starting price is higher than direct competitors, the Ford Explorer or Nissan Pathfinder. Both those vehicles have a base model that starts around $30,000, the Durango, in contrast, starts at $39,995 and tops out at $51,995. This Citadel model, with options, is over $60,000. The base model comes nicely equipped with 18-inch wheels, keyless entry and

Handling point for the Durango is the amount of space it offers over three rows for 6 or 7 passengers. My youngest son loved climbing into the third row and could actually stretch out. I even tried it out and can report that adults have plenty of room in any seat. The Citadel model came equipped with a stunning two-tone interior featuring black carpets and tan seats. This contrast won over my wife who wouldn’t have looked twice at a Durango but after the first week she admitted how much she enjoyed the experience. If you

Verdict This latest Durango is yet another example of what Chrysler is doing right. It is loaded with the latest technology, has a class leading 8-speed automatic, attitude and room to spare. I enjoyed my entire time with it and so did the rest of the family, we even gave it a name, “The Badongo” I don’t know why, but it really is one Bad Durango. If I can read the tea leaves for a moment, I would bet the EcoDiesel will be coming to the Durango, hopefully sooner rather then better. Classic car TV stars when the Big Three ruled TV By Rob Sass

Viewed through the lens of the passage of 40 or 50 years, our favorite classic TV shows seem to have been full of great classic cars. Of course, they were all just new cars then and their presence on our favorite shows was no accident. It was the dawn of the product-placement era, and cars were by far the choicest products to embed in shows like “Green Acres” and “Bewitched.” In those days, the Big Three got near-exclusive sponsorships on the shows plus a credit at the end. Here are some favorite shows and the brand of cars they featured:

driveway.ca

“The Rockford Files”: One of the last great private-eye shows, former big-screen star James Garner played slick Jim Rockford to perfection. And while Rockford almost never used a gun, he did use a gold Pontiac Firebird on a regular basis. Frequent continuity errors meant that Rockford could be seen driving several different years of mid’70s Firebirds in one scene. “Green Acres”: One of the trio of CBS’s hit “rural shows,” along with “Petticoat Junction” and “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “Green Acres” was a Ford show, and the cars that received most of the screen time continued on page 15

All-Wheel-Drive that puts power to the wheels based on road conditions.

Available 260hp turbocharged 2.0L GDI inline 4 engine. Puts the sport in Sportage.

Many compact SUVs sacrifice power for fuel consumption. But here in the Kootenays, we need to pass on hills and climb the steepest passes with confidence. Technology in the Kia Sportage generates big power from a smaller, highly efficient engine. So you get power when you need it – and it doesn’t cost you when you don’t.

Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

ICBC Safety Tip

Drives-U-Crazy Roundabout rebels

My peeve is people who “crash” thru a roundabout, writes reader John Haygarth. Approaching one, you slow down and look left. If someone is already in, let them continue. Do not “cut” them off as many do here in Penticton. Before reaching your exit, you signal right to let others know they can

enter. They are a great way to filter traffic different ways without traffic lights and if used correctly can actually speed up your trip.

With road visibility limited at this time of year, it is more important than ever to pay close attention to traffic controllers and be patient when driving through construction zones. They are putting themselves in harm’s way to keep construction workers and all road users safe.

What drives-u-crazy. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Keith Morgan Ask Keith’s media contemporaries to describe his approach to anything he undertakes and you will hear such words as “passion”, “enthusiasm”, “energy and “innovation” used repeatedly. Never in neutral, the Brit-trained news guy drives projects as he would a finely tuned car, adding the options and features along the way to make the experience as good as it can be. Indeed, Keith is an innovator in developing editorial content for all media platforms and a master at weaving informative and entertaining material of wide appeal into imaginative revenue generation projects. He launched his journalistic career in 1975 as a reporter for his hometown newspaper in Blackpool, England, moving to Vancouver in 1980 where he began a 32-year-career with The Province/ Vancouver Sun. Latterly he created such highly profitable and readable specialty sections at the papers as Driving and Sunday Homes. The multiple-award-winner broadened his media experience by authoring two books, making regular TV appearances, hosting talk shows in Vancouver and Kelowna and writing and executive producing The Province Road Test quiz show for prime time TV. Away from the day job, Keith has donated his creative abilities in support of the Coast Foundation’s Courage to Come Back Awards, the United Way and the Christmas Bureau. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

But the guy with the wife who could twitch her nose and conjure up any car he wanted rarely had the coolest ride on the show. Nope, it was Darrin Stephens’ boss, Larry Tate, who often showed up in a new Corvette convertible.

Oliver’s Continentals get our vote as the most stylish and elegant star cars on classic television. “Charlie’s Angels”: Every adolescent boy’s favorite show was also a Ford show for most of its run. Two of the Angels drove a Mustang II — Farrah Fawcett’s character, Jill, drove what passed for a Cobra in those days — and ironically, the brainy Angel, Sabrina, actually drove a Pinto. “The Beverly Hillbillies”: The Hillbillies was a comparatively rare Mopar show —The Chrysler Corporation supplied the vehicles. Pick of the Week: The All-new Cadillac ELR electrified luxury coupe Green Car Journal has awarded the all-new Cadillac ELR electrified luxury coupe its 2014 Green Car Technology Award for the Regen on Demand system. The technology allows the driver to use paddle shifters on the steering wheel to temporarily regenerate energy and store it as electricity in the battery pack for later use. “Putting regenerative braking at the driver’s fingertips supports the ELR’s 340-mile total driving range while also adding a fun-to-drive element to the premium luxury coupe,” said Jim Vurpillat, director of emerging markets at Cadillac. Powering the ELR is a combination of pure electric drive and an efficient, range-extending 1.4L gasoline-powered electric generator. A T-shaped, 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is located along the centerline of the vehicle, between the front and rear wheels to make the most of weight distribution.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week January 31, 2014

Tip of the Week: The New Moon in Aquarius takes place on January 30 at 1:38 pm PST. This is the official moment of Chinese New Year… of the Wood Horse, even though the calendar usually marks it as the day after because China is so many hours ahead of us here in ‘the West’. The cycle of the Water Snake, which has been so powerfully transformational for so many, and difficult too, is finally over. Of course, this transformation may have proven very positive for some. The implications of any cycle are never pat. It all depends on the experience of each person: a rainy day could spoil the day at the beach for some but be exactly what the fisherman wants… As well, there are ever many cycles to consider. So every case must be approached on its own ground, as is true with medicine and many other aspects of life as well. This is certainly true in Astrological practice. Generally, the Wood Horse stands to be a very dynamic, ‘growth oriented’ and fast-paced year. In her popular book: Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes, Theodora Lau writes the following about the Horse in general: “I am the kaleidoscope of the mind. I impart light, color and perpetual motion. I think, I see, I am moved by perpetual fluidity. Constant only in my inconstancy, I am unshackled by mundane holds, unchecked by sturdy, binding goals. I run unimpeded through virgin paths, my spirit unconquered – my soul forever free.” This offers a hint about the overall flavour of the year. It is a poetic description I might lend to Mercury Retrograde…. So saddle-up and get ready for an exciting and probably wild ride. P.S. The mid-point of winter which is celebrated as Candlemas, or what is also called Imbolc and Groundhog Day, occurs on February 2nd.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

A strong assertion of your sense of individuality will be evident now. This may be a challenge for others. However, you probably want harmony and are making extra efforts to keep the peace. Practicality is part of your motivation; conflict is stressful and costly. Even a pioneer like you knows that it is wise to tread softly sometimes when entering new territory. You are at a peak in your cycle and should be getting all the attention you want and need. You are in a visionary mood and your sights are set on the future. Finances and investments are clearly featured in your bottom line. This includes strategic efforts to forge new alliances. Focus to clear any confusions and misunderstandings in your communications with others. A rush of imaginative thoughts and ideas are flowing now. You would like to be heard but may not know exactly how. Deciphering where you stand and how to best present yourself in the world feels extra important. Turning to teachers, mentors and guides is likely and ideal. Quality connections and shared expressions with friends now is a key to your success. Contending with some of the deeper questions of life continues. Changes and possibly endings require sobering thought and action. These likely include finances, inheritances, taxes and/or wills and so on. Changes and improvements at home for a more efficient flow are featured. You are in a good position to get the support and attention you want, especially if you ask. A breath of new life is producing some excitement in your relationships. Inspired and energized, you are determined to respond assertively. Good thing too because it requires that you give more than usual. Something is ending and another is beginning. This may be stirring some fears, or at least some nervous excitement. Be proactive to realize your dreams. A busy cycle is underway. Yet, it includes inner work as well as outer. This implies overcoming fear, doubts, confusion, apathy, procrastination and/or limited thinking in general. As well, your focus could be upon clearing negative attitudes, behaviour patterns and/or blind spots, denials and deceptions in your relationships. Either way, ‘get her done’.

On one hand you are in the mood to play and socialize. On the other hand you are moved to clean, clear, improve and beautify at home, and/or you need to attend to important family matters. You are in an assertive mood yet you also want to proceed cooperatively. Security is on your mind and this includes financial concerns and interests. Home is where your heart is and you might wish that your body could remain there longer these days. This cycle will only last a few weeks so try to make the most of it. You want a change of pace at least and possibly of lifestyle altogether. It could all amount to simply needing some downtime and space. Get cozy, recharge and rejuvenate. Travels in body, mind, heart and/or soul are a source of excitement now. You are thirsty for knowledge and experience. Bored by conventional thinking and approaches, you could even be taking a ride on the wild side. Yet as willing as you are to cover a lot of ground, you would like to get paid as well. Clarify your goals and get inventive. Financial ambitions, interests and possibly concerns are on your mind. Exchanging thoughts and ideas with someone who will listen is important to you. You want support and recognition from your ‘partners’ especially. As willing as you are to learn, you also want to be heard and to share your ideas, plans, schemes and dreams. You are in a pioneering mood. Yet, you do not want to go alone. Neither do you want to go with just anyone. At least you want the company of someone special, someone you love and who feels the same toward you. Recognition or fanfare is hardly necessary. In fact, you would rather remain below the radar. A romantic get-away would do nicely. A busy time behind the scenes where you want to get a lot done has begun. With your creative juices flowing so strongly, you could get impressive results. The turn now includes a desire for important and meaningful dialogue or correspondences with your partner(s). Ambitions to increase your income and improve your financial status in general are prime motivations.

Christina Lake Aquatic Invasive Species Program a success grand forks staff West Kootenay Advertiser

The Aquatic Invasive Species Educational program offered by the Christina Lake Stewardship Society (CLSS) and the Boundary Invasive Species Society (BISS) was successful in preventing the spread of

the dreaded Zebra and Quagga mussels into local waterways. The program involved being present at the Texas Creek Provincial Park boat launch for three days a week throughout the months of July and August to provide watercraft operators with educational materials, and encourage proper

techniques to clean, drain, and dry their boats. Those working at the educational booth noted 319 boaters came through the boat launch, with the majority of these being from B.C. On top of that, an additional 1,495 people came through the CLSS Interactive Gallery at the Welcome Centre in Christina Lake to learn about

these aquatic invasive species (AIS). Those running the program were surprised at the number of people who had not heard about these mussels and the disastrous economic and ecological impacts they have on a water system, but now these folks are free to spread the word about these impacts.
