When grade 12 student Kyrie Jackson was asked to write a position paper on pageants for a class, she took the side in favour of pageants. It was in doing research for the paper that she found the application for Miss Teen Canada and thought, why not try it out? “I’ve always wanted to do

pageants, because I thought they’d be really fun,” Kyrie said. She sent in an application and got an interview with executive director Michelle Weswaldi over Skype. Within 48 hours she was invited to the Miss Teen B.C. pageant in Vancouver on March 1 and 2, the stepping stone to the national pageant.

PATCHES is a 4 year old short haired, torbie. She came in to our shelter as a stray, when she first came in she was very shy and scared but now with a little love and trust she has come around. Kyrie sets out on Miss Teen Canada journey Continued from page 1 Since Kyrie got the call she’s been getting ready and enjoying the ride so far. “There is a lot to get ready,” she said. “You have to have an evening gown, interview wear, swimsuit, another dress and figure out what you are going to do with that. It’s a lot to do in a month or two.” As part of the pageant prep, she is also fundraising for Cardiac Kids and finding sponsors. Pageant participants have to do well in school, not have been married or pregnant. In Vancouver, Kyrie will meet choreographers and makeup artists who have worked with the likes of Christina Aguilera and Pink.

“I’m just counting down the days until it happens,” she said. There are also modelling, acting and interview skills workshops, and there will be talent scouts in attendance as well. “So it opens up a lot of opportunities,” she said. If she gets one of the 15 titles that will be awarded, Kyrie will take part in some events in the community such as parades and press conferences. After that she would go to Toronto in July and compete for the title of Miss Teen Canada. Her mother, Judy, said that there are a lot of other opportunities that taking part in the pageant can offer, things like travel abroad and

Kyrie Jackson volunteering. “Building schools, homes or hospitals; they did it in Haiti last year,” said Kyrie.

“They went over and built schools, every girl who got a title through it, if they wanted to.”

Every $100 she raises for Cardiac Kids gets added up to a point out of 10 per cent on her score. “It helps a lot for kids that have heart defects, that’s what the money goes to,” Kyrie said. “They pick a different charity each year. I’m just hoping to raise as much as I can for the Cardiac Kids, because it’s a really good charity and helps a lot of people.” She has also been looking for sponsors, because its not only getting to Vancouver, but also the hotels, transportation and the entrance fees for the pageant. Her mom said it is a huge opportunity and learning experience for her daughter. “It’s pretty exciting,” said Judy.

“At first I thought this is a big adventure and big grad year all at once, but how can she miss out on an opportunity to develop herself and find out who she is and where she wants to go? What she wants to do for a career and stuff? So I’m pretty proud. She’s been doing a lot of work to get herself to this place, so it’s good stuff.” To make a donation or contact Kyrie with questions about the pageant, email kyrie.21@hotmail.com. She will also have a table in the Tamarack Centre on Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. in February.

Snow clearing operations are underway Continued from page 1

“Regularly clearing ice and snow from your sidewalks and driveways will allow much easier access to your property by the fire department, RCMP or paramedics should an accident or other emergencies happen,” says Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services Chief Wayne Price, adding, “It also will make walking easier for our local mail and newspaper carriers and the public at large.” Residents are also encouraged to avoid pushing or blowing snow from their sidewalks, driveways and any windrows back into the street, after the City plows have been by.

Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski (fifth from right) and Councillor Sharon Cross (far right) presented Cranbrook Curling Club President Bill Brock (fifth from left) and members of the club with a cheque for $40,000 on Jan. 29, in a renewal of the City’s arrangement with the Curling Club.

City renews Curling Club deal Tre vor Cr awley

The Cranbrook Curling Club got a boost in funding from municipal coffers on Wednesday evening, as Mayor Wayne Stetski announced an annual sum of $40,000 as part of a five-year contract. Taking effect at the beginning of October, money from the contract will go to-

wards building and ice upkeep and maintenance, according to club president Bill Brock. The club and the city’s old contract—a three-year agreement for $50,000 of annual funding—had recently expired, but the two groups got together last fall to hammer out a new agreement.

“In essence, this is a city facility, still, the curling club, so we have a responsibility for the facility itself, but the operations are all looked after by Bill and curling club members,” said Stetski. “So it’s a partnership that works really well, for the city, for the taxpayers of Cranbrook, and it works well for the curling club

members as well.” Brock adds that while the curling club gets a few grants from various sources, the funding partnership with the city goes a long way to covering costs for the organization. “We pay all the costs of running the building, all the utilities—everything, so it makes it worthwhile for us,

for sure and it seems to work out well for the city,” Brock said. In addition to grants, the club also gets funding from advertising and building rentals in the off-season. Recent projects include the replacement of fans and some work to the upstairs lounge, which was done by club volunteers.

The date of the opening reception for the Cranbrook and District Arts Council’s Flathead Wild exhibition is Friday, Feb. 7, not Feb. 6, as previously reported. The public is free to attend and meet an artist or two. Complimentary refreshments from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Again, that’s Friday, Feb. 7, at the Cranbrook and District Arts Council. provinces, the working group released its first report this week. The report notes a “disconnect between public perception and the reality” of the importance of oil and gas to the Canadian economy. The industry is the largest contributor to Canada’s balance of trade, and investment of $55 billion in new capital projects in 2012 alone. It also records that Canada is losing an estimated $50 million a day in potential revenue due to lack of access to oil customers outside the United States, and acknowledges that without additional pipeline capacity, crude oil will increasingly be shipped by rail. To respond to “misinformation on numerous fronts” on technology, economic benefits, environmental issues and regulatory practices, the report suggests increased effort in communities, First Nations and schools. One program cited as an example is the Canadian Geographic Energy IQ Program, a partnership between the magazine and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers to “provide an interactive educational experience for students in the classroom on the prevalence of energy.” Redford and Clark MoTI Adyear # 1023B agreed last to supportEast B.C.Kootenay ’s five condiHire tions for new heavy oil Equipment pipelines from Alberta Cranbrook Dailyand to the Pacific coast, Alberta’s proposal for a Townsman national energy strategy to 5.833” improvex 6.79” access to 4 columns x 95 line markets for Canadian energy. B.C.’s conditions include “world class” spill prevention on land and at sea, which the report describes as an evolving target. The report paints a rosy picture of oil spill response off the coast, despite a study done for the B.C. government last year that found little capacity to recover crude oil spilled off the North Coast. The report also describes the need for better movement of goods from B.C. ports to Alberta’s industrial areas, an effort called “Project Cargo.”

A quilter’s hideaway SugarTown Quilt Company offers a colourful, friendly oasis for quilters in Cranbrook

Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff

There’s a bright new quilt store in town, and already it’s enticing local quilters. SugarTown Quilt Company opened on King Street in Cranbrook on Jan. 20, and it’s chock-full of bright, happy cotton, flannel and minky fabrics. Owner Tammy Howard relocated the store, which had been open for six years, from her hometown of Raymond, Alberta, south of Lethbridge. She and her husband moved to Cranbrook from Raymond last year when he was transferred here for work. “Everything feels right to have come here,” Tammy said, adding that even though Cranbrook is larger than Raymond, it still feels like a small town. Tammy closed the Raymond store last June and took six months to move her inventory and fittings to Cranbrook. The location, beside Liquidation World, was previously used as a tire store, so when Tammy signed the lease it still held a compressor and a battery charging station. You wouldn’t know it now: the double garage doors have been converted to big picture windows; the ceiling

tiles have been pulled down to reveal wooden beams, and chandeliers hang from the 12-foot ceiling. “The store I left in Alberta was very country,” said Tammy. “This was an opportunity to reinvent the store. “I wanted people to want to come in and spend some time here and like the atmosphere.” The store has several cutting stations and lots of spots to sit and look at patterns and books. There is a lounge area by the fireplace which will soon have a television, “so that the husbands have a little something to do,” said Tammy. A room at the back of the store is set up for classes and get-togethers, with a kitchenette and sewing machine. In the spring, Tammy intends to plant a garden beside the store. “The garden will lend to the beauty of the building,” she said. “We can hang quilts off the fences.” Classes will begin soon and will probably start with a Quilting 101 series that goes over the machine, threads to use, fabric, piecing and shapes. The store carries patterns for things such as purses, aprons and girls’

dresses. Tammy said her store appeals to younger quilters. “I catered a lot to them with bright colours, little girl’s dress patterns, skirts and bows,” said Tammy. “But the business is going to adapt to the demand.” She hopes the store’s environment is inspiring to quilters. “It’s not just a ‘come in and quilt’ store; I’m a ‘come in and expand your creativity’ store.” Around the store, the fabrics are organized in sets by designer. Beside each set is a completed quilt using those fabrics, so you can see what the finished product could look like. There is a large selection of quilting books and magazines, and a huge range of ‘notions’ – ribbons, cutting boards, scissors, and purse handles. You will also find an array of threads and batting. It’s all presented beautifully with fabric squares in different sizes displayed in old suitcases, on upcycled chairs and shabby-chic dressers. SugarTown Quilting Company is now open on King Street in Cranbrook, Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Super Bowl and the Beatitudes I’m going to be watching the Super Bowl this Sunday, along with millions of other people. Go Broncos! (God may not take sides, but I do!) I have to admit, however, that there is some discomfort for me at the huge amounts of money being spent on a spectacle like the Super Bowl. In some ways, it reminds me of the circuses in ancient Rome, meant to deflect the public’s attention from more serious scandals and crises which need to be addressed. So I was very interested in an “infographic” I found online this past week, presenting five factoids about the Super Bowl and comparing them with some other statistics. 1) In last year’s Super Bowl, people consumed 1.25 billion chicken wings, 15,000 tons of chips, and 27 million slices of pizza from Domino’s and Pizza Hut alone. At the same time, 47 million Americans depend on food stamps; 2) A Level 3 suite at MetLife stadium will cost $899,270 this Sunday; the average new home price in the U.S. is $340,300; 3) The average ticket price for this year’s Super Bowl is $4,084; the average weekly salary in the U.S. is $831; 4) The cost of a 30–second television ad will be $4 million, with an anticipated total advertising revenue of $300 million; $300 million could educate 272,727 kids for a year; 5) In 2013, an estimated 3.9 million people bought new furniture for Super Bowl parties; over 3.5 million people are homeless in the U.S.. (These are all U.S. statistics, but if you substitute “hockey” for “football”, and change a few numbers slightly, it will work just as well in Canada.)

It’s mind–boggling, isn’t it? At an average cost of $4,084 per seat, the sold-out game will raise over $33.7 million from the 82,566 fans at the game. Now, just to be clear: I have nothing against the Super Bowl. I’m going to be watching (did I say “Go Broncos!” yet?). At the same time, we compare this macho spectacle to something like the Beatitudes which are found in Matthew 5. It’s clear that Jesus’ values are light years away from this kind of spectacle with its conspicuous consumerism. Jesus turns our attention instead toward the weak, the Rev. Yme powerless, the vulnerable Woensdregt people in our world. Here are some of the kind of people whom Jesus embraces: The poor in spirit (those who are either humble or those who have been beaten down and lost hope); Those who mourn (who are feeling the emptiness that comes with deep loss); The meek (those who are gentle and who refuse to use power over others as a tool to make things happen); Those who are merciful (who willingly give themselves to make the lives of others better); Those who are persecuted for steadfastly seeking the truth and justice. The kinds of people Jesus highlights tend to dwell beneath society’s radar. They often stay out, or are kept out, of public view. They possess little power. For most of us, there is no good reason to join these groups. Yet Jesus calls them “blessed.” We don’t use this word much in ordinary speech. One possible translation is “happy,” but not in a cheery, shallow sense. Think of it rather as “unburdened” or “satisfied.”

In other words, Jesus names people who usually appear to be needy, harassed, or scorned, and he declares them to be the opposite. In living the life of Jesus, they are secure and complete. They receive grand promises: comfort, mercy, and intimacy with God. Here are Jesus’ priorities. His values contrast sharply with the values of our society. What Jesus wants to do is to subvert our values, to change all those things we take for granted about how life should work. Jesus changes our expectations about where we can find happiness. I read recently that Super Bowl winning quarterback Aaron Rodgers once described his change of heart to a class of students at the University of Wisconsin: “I remember sitting on the bus after we won Super Bowl 45 in 2011, probably two hours after the game, thinking to myself, ‘I’m on top of the world. We just accomplished the most amazing goal in football.’ But I’m sitting there with a semi–empty feeling because I accomplished everything I wanted to do since I was a kid, and I kind of had a moment. I said to myself, ‘Is this it? Is there more to life than this?’ And the answer was resoundingly, ‘Yes, there is more to life.’” Because of that insight, he got involved with The Enough Project, a group which campaigns for an end to genocide and crimes of humanity. I’m going to watch the game. I’ll enjoy the athleticism; I’ll probably laugh at some of the commercials. But I’m not going to buy into the values of this sport or any other. I’d rather be identified with Jesus (who probably won’t be cheering for either the Broncos or the Seahawks). Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook.

The Cranbrook Men of the Strathcona Horse T

JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now

Jim Cameron

hey were, in many ways, a disparate lot, hailing from fields afar: Canada, the United States and Europe, all finding themselves in Cranbrook at the turn of the 20th century. Still, they all had something in common: they were, to a man, in the prime of their life and they were, to a man, ready to go to war. By early 1900, the war in South Africa pitting the resident Boers against the British invaders was not going as well for England as might be expected. Though generally outnumbered, the Boer farmers and ranchers fought a type of small, independent “guerilla” warfare that seemed to handcuff the British troops, causing numerous losses with little success. Men were needed, men who could both ride and shoot well and who could give back the Boers some of their own medicine. Lord Strathcona (Donald Alexander Smith) offered to personally finance and equip a mounted infantry regiment of Canadian volunteers. The force, to be known as the Strathcona Horse, was to include 504 men, 42 officers and 548 horses. He asked Superintendent Samuel B. Steele of the North West Mounted Police to serve as commanding officer. Steele promptly agreed and, following the insertion of ads in all Western Canadian newspapers, opened numerous recruiting stations from Manitoba to the Yukon, including Fort Steele. Volunteers were required to sign up for six months (or one year, if required) and, according to Lt. Col. Steele, only the “the most respectable character to be taken, such as would pass into the NWMP.” As early as Jan. 18, 1900, a concert was held in Forrest Hall (later the Wentworth/ Allan Hotel, now the 9th Ave. connector) to raise money for South African volunteers from the city. Although the event was hastily prepared it was a great success with speeches and entertainment given to a crowded and generous house. Towards the end of the show, in true English music hall fashion, Miss Magee sang the patriotic “Pay, Pay, Pay” while the hat was passed, raising $192 (over $5,000 today). A paper circulated through-

men who left homes, families and friends, who left jobs as ranchers, miners, railway workers, and clerks to travel halfway around the world to fight an unknown foe in an unknown land. Saturday, Feb. 10, 1900, was a memorable day for the citizens of Cranbrook and for the men of the Strathcona Horse. Forty strong, under the command of local recruiting officer Captain Edmund Parker, they arrived in town at 11 p.m. accompanied by a band and a large group of citizens from Fort Steele. The contingent marched to the CPR station to board the train for Ottawa and then on to the fields of South Africa. The volunteers stood in line on the platform while photographer Prest took three views. The boys were then given one hour to attend to last minute business and say their farewells. The photographs appear to be unaccounted for, but a newspaper description, in the purple prose of the moment, captures the event: “There were cheers On his medical paper, Walter West is described as having a “ner- for those departing and, as the vous temperament. Sweden’s Sochi chances take hit as Franzen out of Olympics with concussion

DETROIT - Johan Franzen won’t play for Sweden at the Sochi Olympics because of a concussion. The Detroit Red Wings forward had missed a month before returning for one game Jan. 26. Franzen played just under 17 minutes and was placed on injured reserve again Tuesday. Red Wings teammate Gustav Nyquist, Marcus Johansson of the Washington Capitals and Patrick Hornqvist of the Nashville Predators are considered favourites to replace Franzen on the roster. Franzen was one of a handful of players back from the Swedish team that won gold at the 2006 Games in Turin. He also represented Sweden in Vancouver in 2010. Canadian Press

Seattle’s Marshawn Lynch keeps comments brief again in last media session

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Marshawn Lynch says it will be good to “get back to football” after the Seattle running back wrapped up his final mandatory media session of Super Bowl week. He took questions for about 7 1/2 minutes Thursday morning, his longest such stretch this week. He talked for less than 7 minutes on Wednesday at both media day and the media session at the team hotel. Lynch limited his answers to football-related questions, all with Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson by his side. Robinson joked as he sat down that he was just a prop. Associated Press

Olympic champion Ian Thorpe in rehab, battling depression, alcohol

SYDNEY, Australia - Australian media reports say five-time Olympic champion swimmer Ian Thorpe has checked into a rehab facility in Sydney while battling depression and alcohol abuse. News Corporation says the 31-year-old Thorpe was admitted to hospital on Wednesday after being injured in a fall. The news organization quoted a friend of Thorpe as saying “he had an accident at home. He slipped and hurt himself. We’re hoping he’s going to be OK and make a full recovery.” Thorpe has been living in Switzerland for the past 18 months but returned to Sydney to spend the Christmas period with family. In his autobiography, released last year, Thorpe said he spent much of his life battling “crippling” depression. Associated Press

Raiders, Hitmen take aim at the Ice Starting off strong will be key to both games after learning a few lessions in Medicine Hat TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

Austin Vetterl makes no bones that the Kootenay Ice laid a bit of an egg on Wednesday night in a 6-2 loss against the Medicine Hat Tigers. “I didn’t think we came out very strong,” the 19-year-old forward said. “Maybe it’s in our heads a bit in Med Hat, but sometimes, it just happens like that. “I thought halfway through the game we picked it up, but by that time, it was 5-0 and it was too late at that point.” Kootenay countered with a pair of late goals in the third period, and also rang the puck off the post a few times over the course of the contest, which could’ve turned the tide. However, as with all things in life, there are lessons to be learned in defeat. “We can play against that team in that building and we can be successful, but we have to play a full 60 minutes there, we can’t do it for half the game,” Vetterl

noted. That theme will play heavily into the weekend, as the Ice host the Prince Albert Raiders on Friday and the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday. Kootenay is clinging on to the final playoff spot in eighth place and have four of their next six games against Central Division opponents. Every two points that the Ice can take away from their divisional foes will mean that much more distance in the standings race. “We have to stay on the game plan and play hard against all those teams, especially against all the teams in Central [Division] they’re going to come out hard and give us their best game, because they’re rivals with us,” said Vetterl. In Medicine Hat, the Tigers had a 3-0 lead after the first period, and a 5-0 lead early into the second frame. When facing the Raiders and the Hitmen this weekend, a better start will be crucial, added Vetterl.

“We have to go out, we have to start strong and play 60 minutes against them,” he said. The Raiders are having a tough stretch, losing seven of their last eight games, including two blowouts in Swift Current and Red Deer. Calgary, which recently surrendered the top spot in the Eastern Conference to Edmonton, has lost six of their last eight outings.

“They’re both good teams, you got to get on them early, get their confidence down a bit and hopefully you can keep going from there.” Austin Vetterl

While both teams may be struggling with a lack of confidence due to their recent records, Vetterl is also expecting them to come out with some fire. “If you get on them

early and get up on them early, they kind of lose confidence or they kind of sink into a shell,” said Vetterl. “But at the same time, they’re going to want to come out and prove themselves, especially PA—they’re going to want to prove they deserve a playoff spot— and Calgary, they can score whenever they want, they got such a great team, they made so many trades at the deadline. “They’re both good teams, you got to get on them early, get their confidence down a bit and hopefully you can keep going from there.” One weapon the Ice will continue to count on is Luke Philp, the second-line centre who extended his point streak to 11 games on Wednesday night with a powerplay goal. He is now up to 19 goals and 34 assists for 53 points so far this season. Philp has been paired up with Tim Bozon, and the two have combined to add some bite to Kootenay’s offence. Joining Philp and Bozon on the

the right wing is Vetterl himself, who has also helped out with eight goals and 15 assists. Vetterl acknowledged how well his centreman has been performing recently. “Luke Philp is playing great hockey right now, same with Timmy Bozon,” Vetterl said. “For Luke Philp, he’s our second line centre, and for him to bring secondary scoring, I guess you could call it, is huge for us, especially when you get guys like Sam, Desch and Frankie on the first line, it’s huge to have those guys going on the second line to give us a little extra scoring out there.” NOTES: Kootenay has faced Prince Albert once at home and once on the road this season, the home team winning each game. The Raiders are coached by former Kootenay Ice bench boss Cory Clouston. Despite Calgary’s high perch in the Eastern Conference, the Ice have the edge in the season series, with three wins in their last five meetings to date.

Sports Avs get home court advantage again Tre vor Cr awley Sports Editor

When the men’s Avalanche headed down to Vancouver Island University in the autumn semester, they did the impossible. Okay, maybe not the impossible, but they pulled off something they’ve never done before—they stole a pair of wins in the Mariners home gym in Nanaimo. Now, the Mariners are coming up to Cranbrook for some rematches this weekend. The Avs entering their fourth consecutive weekend where they play host to other Pacwest teams. Over the course of that time, the men have taken a match away from the CBC Bearcats, and swept the UFV Cascades. Suffice to say, the home court advantage has made for good returns in the Avs win column. “It’s awesome,” said setter Nick Schmidt. “We

actually have the best fans in the league, I think. We have the most fans show up, its always loud and the crowd’s always into it, so they contribute quite a bit, too.” The men are coming off a pair of losses to the Camosun College Chargers—of which one match went to five sets— and are still feeling a little burned by it. “We were in positions where we could’ve won every set in every game,” continued Schmidt. “We were in positions right there—it was 22-20, 23-20 for us when we had the ball, its just a matter of finishing, I guess, and that’s what we talked about.” Head coach Steve

Kamps said the team has to learn from the mistakes made against Camosun and focus ahead on the Mariners. “Obviously a letdown last week. We felt like we played good enough to win both matches, especially on Friday, we just seemed to be finding ways to lose volleyball matches,” said Kamps. “We outplay a team for three-quarters or more of the night and find a way to lose right at the end of sets so I think our focus is on this weekend now, we have to move past that and we still have some work to do to make the playoffs and it’s our last chance at home here to play well before we go on the last

road trip.” The VIU Mariners are a new look team from the fall, repositioning a fifthyear right side into a setter and adding a new right side who recorded a lot of kills against Capilano University last weekend, according to Kamps, who reviewed some game tape with the team this week. “Overall, we’ve watched some of the tendencies and it’s just about us and really focusing on finishing sets

when we’re ahead by five or six come 20 and we’ve had a difficult time doing that,” Kamps said. While the men dropped both matches last weekend, the ladies Av’s picked up a win in a tiebreak set, rallying from 14-9 to post a 16-14 result against the Chargers. The ladies will be heading into another tough weekend, as the women’s Mariners are the top ranked team in the Pacwest league—tied at first place with the UFV Cascades. The women start their match at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by the men at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the women will begin at 1 p.m. with the men at 3 p.m.

Canucks reeling from injuries a slew of injuries

VANCOUVER - The struggling Vancouver Canucks can’t seem to catch a break on the injury front. The team announced Thursday that centre Mike Santorelli has undergone surgery to repair a torn labrum and will be out five to six months, effectively ending his season. The news came after assistant coach Mike Sullivan told reporters defenceman Kevin Bieksa won’t accompany the Canucks on their five-game road trip that leads into the Olympic break. “It’s more than (a maintenance day),” said Sullivan of Bieksa’s absence from practice. “He is not going to join us on the trip. “We don’t know the details of it yet. When we get more information we’ll update you.” On top of that, fellow defenceman Christopher Tanev is out with what’s believed to be a broken hand. Captain Henrik Sedin has missed the last five games with an upper-body injury, although Sullivan expects him back soon. “He’s still day-to-day, but I believe he will join us on this trip and we are hopeful that we’ll get him at some point here,” said Sullivan. It all adds up to a very busy sick bay for a team that has just four wins in its last 15 games (4-8-3), including just two victories in regulation. Canadian Press

Roughriders release slotback Dressler so he can sign NFL deal C anadian Press

REGINA - The Grey Cup-champion Saskatchewan Roughriders released all-star slotback Weston Dressler on Thursday. The move wasn’t a surprise. Dressler, 28, was scheduled to become a free agent Feb. 15 and was exploring his NFL options. This allows Dressler, who earlier this month worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs, to sign an NFL deal immediately. Riders assistant GM Jeremy O’Day said that could happen very soon. “Weston and his agent were very up front they were going to go through the process and we were made aware of a possible situation coming up in the next couple of days where Weston was more than likely going to get an opportunity,” O’Day told reporters. “From our standpoint it’s tough to lose such a good player that’s been here for a long time, is a leader in the locker-room. “But again, you’ve got to feel happy for him that he gets that opportunity. He hasn’t gone through the process of being in the NFL and as any competitor you just

want to see how you compare with the best available players. We wish him the best.” The five-foot-eight, 179-pound native of Bismarck, N.D., has spent the past six seasons in Regina, having registered 442 catches for 6,531 yards and 43 TDs.

He has surpassed the 1,000-yard receiving plateau five times in his career, including the last four years. Dressler had five catches for a game-high 81 yards and a touchdown in Saskatchewan’s 45-23 Grey Cup victory over Hamilton.

A Magical Place In Kimberley’s nature park there is a hidden beautiful forest and a fascinating lake . It is Eimer’s Lake. My clas s and I went to Eimer’s Lake . It was so beautiful, the lake wa s frozen and the birds were ch irping. There were leaves fallin g off the big trees, and one of the yellow leaves landed in my yo gurt. I loved playing camou flage on the way to Eimer’s La ke. The yellow leaves made m e feel like I was in a dream! To me, Eimer’s Lake was an amazing place. It was a misty, magical blue sky day. I loved the sound of the rushing and sw ooshing river. It felt great! Som e of my classmates threw stic ks at the lake and it made a re ally cool sound back! Eimer’s Lake is beautiful. Eimer’s Lake is one of my favorite places in the World, except for Costa Rica and Nicaragua!

Clocks Rotate Flinging priceless moments away Moments unable to be cherished again Moments become memories The present is now the past Our lives may slow, but the time still rows Minutes come and go yet the time still grows Our lifes become tales But the time won’t grow old.

Pain, laughter and courage she whatches her life go bye. She opens her eye’s. life flashes before her. Pain is with her all the time. barly any laughter. No mother or father only a dog protecting her from her fatality. No one apprectaints her. No one will take her home. No smile any more Just a sad little girl tears running down her face. She has courage but barly any with her now. but she still has a life.

NEWS Italy appeals court upholds murder conviction against Amanda Knox COLLEEN BARRY Associated Press

FLORENCE, Italy — An appeals court in Florence on Thursday upheld the guilty verdict against U.S. student Amanda Knox and her ex-boyfriend for the 2007 murder of her British roommate. Knox was sentenced to 28 1/2 years in prison, raising the spectre of a long legal battle over her extradition. After nearly 12 hours of deliberations, the court reinstated the guilty verdict first handed down against Knox and Raffaele Sollecito in 2009. The verdict had been overturned in 2011 and the pair freed from

prison, but Italy’s supreme court vacated that decision and sent the case back for a third trial in Florence. Sollecito, whose lawyers said they would appeal the verdict, was sentenced to 25 years. Reached by telephone, Knox’s father, Curt Knox, said he had no comment. While Sollecito was in court Thursday morning, he didn’t return for the verdict, and the 26-year-old Knox was home in Seattle awaiting the decision with, in her own words, “my heart in my throat.’’ Sollecito’s lawyers said they were stunned and would take their ap-

sando Nencini ordered the 29-year-old Sollecito’s passport revoked but made no requests for Knox’s movements

dova said. “The penal code does not foresee probability. It foresees certainty.’’ Dalla Vedova evoked Dante, noting that the Florentine writer reserved the lower circle of hell for those who betrayed trust, as he asserted that police had done to Knox when they held her overnight for questioning without legal representation and without advising her that she was a suspect. Knox had returned to Seattle after spending four years in jail before being acquitted in 2011. In an email to this court, Knox wrote that she feared a wrongful conviction.

She told Italian state TV in an interview earlier this month that she would wait for the verdict at her mother’s house “with my heart in my throat.’’ Knox’s absence didn’t formally hurt her case since she was freed by a court and defendants in Italy are not required to appear at their trials. However, Nencini reacted sternly to her emailed statement, noting that defendants have a right to be heard if they appear in person. Sollecito, on the other hand, was in court Thursday morning, and said he would return for the verdict. But he didn’t come for the verdict.

Justin Bieber had marijuana, Xanax in system after Fla. arrest MIAMI — A preliminary toxicology report shows that Justin Bieber tested positive for marijuana and the anti-anxiety drug Xanax after his arrest last week in South Florida. The report released Thursday also shows no presence of other illicit drugs in Bieber’s system, such as cocaine or oxycodone. The 19-year-old pop star was arrested last week on Miami Beach on charges of DUI, resisting arrest and having an expired driver’s license. Bieber has pleaded not guilty but told police after his arrest last week that he had been smoking marijuana and took

to be limited, saying she was “justifiably abroad.’’ Knox’s defence team gave its last round of rebuttals earlier in the day, ending four months of arguments in Knox’s and Sollecito’s third trial for the 2007 murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, in the Italian university town of Perugia. Knox’s lawyer, Carlo Dalla Vedova, had told the court he was “serene’’ about the verdict because he believes the only conclusion from the files is “the innocence of Amanda Knox.’’ “It is not possible to convict a person because it is probable that she is guilty,’’ Dalla Ve-

Kevin Allred, a doctoral student who is teaching the class, tells the university’s online news site that he is using Beyonce’s career as a way to explore American race, gender and sexual politics. The class supplements an analysis of Beyonce’s videos and lyrics with readings from Black feminists. Allred says he’s seek-

ing to help students think more critically about media consumption. Rutgers also has a class examining the theology of Bruce Springsteen’s lyrics. Georgetown University has a class called “The Sociology of Hip-Hop: The Urban Theodicy of Jay-Z,’’ focusing on Beyonce’s rapper husband.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You could feel uncomfortable about a matter revolving around your household. You might have pushed someone away. You’ll discover that a partner is energized and finally ready to pitch in. You instinctively pick up on others’ nonverbal cues. Tonight: TGIF! TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You could be overwhelmed by everything that is happening. A loved one’s response might not warm the cockles of your heart. Understand where you are coming from in regard to this person. Consider establishing some limits. Tonight: Celebrate the weekend in style. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You could question a decision more than you need to. Recognize your limits in the present situation, and resist pushing too hard. In fact, the less you push, the more you will receive. You might not be as cautious as you need to be with your finances. Tonight: Your treat.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll respond positively to someone’s efforts to draw you in. Relating closely happens naturally when you are with this person. Rethink a decision, and be aware of the consequences. You are instinctive in your reactions. Tonight: Follow the music. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You are able to see a personal matter differently from how many people do. You will want to communicate your vision more fully than you have in the past. A loved one could be rather stern and difficult. You might want to have a long-overdue conversation. Tonight: Time for a talk. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Others insist on dominating the scene, no matter what is going on. Your feelings could come out in an odd way or through spending. Working with someone else might elicit powerful responses from you. Be aware of this. Tonight: With a favorite person. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might feel as though you

are carrying a burden alone, but that is not the case. You will get a better grasp of a situation later in the day. In fact, in the next few days, you will be gaining an enhanced perspective of several important matters. Tonight: Beam in more of what you want. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You have been very sure of yourself lately and perhaps too hard on someone you care about. At a certain point, you will need to give up your grievances and move forward in a positive manner. Tonight: Act as if there will never be another Friday night. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Use your instincts in an important conversation. Understand that much more is going on than meets the eye. You have a strong will, and you’ll sense what is needed to end a personal issue. Stress on your finances will ease up soon enough. Tonight: Head home. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You will experience an unusual urge to spend. Much of that de-

sire is being fueled by a personal situation. You tend to pick up much more of what is going on than what is being verbalized. Tonight: You deserve to have some fun. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Be aware of your effect on others. Sometimes you are pushed way beyond what you can handle. Think through a problem by getting more feedback. A domestic issue will resolve, given some time and perspective. Tonight: Make it OK to be a little overindulgent. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might sense a change in the air, but you are uncomfortable with change. Relax, and understand that others might not be on the same level as you. Do some deep thinking before you act. You will rejuvenate as the day goes on. Tonight: All smiles -- it’s Friday! ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I have a question regarding the appropriateness of a grandfather sleeping with a 5-year-old granddaughter during visits to her family home. In this case, the grandmother and grandfather take turns sleeping in the same bed with the granddaughter. I feel this is most inappropriate and sends very mixed messages to the child. I have read some research that suggests it shouldn’t be done after the age of 8, or at reaching puberty. What is your take? -- Concerned Cousin Dear Cousin: Unless one of the grandparents is molesting the child, this is nothing to be alarmed about. The grandparents don’t live with the family and don’t sleep with the girl on a regular basis. We suspect this arrangement has more to do with the lack of beds during a visit and the desire to spend extra time with a young grandchild. If the girl objects (and if she doesn’t now, she will later), other arrangements should be made -- such as a sleeping bag or an air mattress. Dear Annie: I have two girlfriends I’ve been very close to for several years. We are all in our 40s. Recently, we have grown apart. I’ve seen Facebook postings of things they are doing and pictures of activities they’ve done together, and I haven’t been invited to any of them. I mentioned this to one of them, who assured me they weren’t trying to hurt me. But I recently saw pictures of them celebrating on New Year’s Eve. The same friend told me it was a spur-of-the-moment thing, that they had no plans to celebrate, but circumstances allowed it when their shifts ended. When I asked the other friend, she gave a flippant remark as if it didn’t matter. Am I being oversensitive? Is it too much to think they could have called or texted me to join them? I sat at home, ringing in the New Year alone. My gut tells me to move along. What do you think? -- Afterthought Dear Afterthought: Your gut is right. These friends are no longer interested in making the effort to include you. Please search for friendships elsewhere. There’s no reason to sit home alone because others don’t call. Make your own plans. Get involved in activities that will allow you to meet others and become more interesting in the process. Dear Annie: This is in response to the letter from “Massachusetts,” who is having an affair with “Harry,” her childhood sweetheart, even though both of them are married to others. I have been married to the same woman for 35 years, and it has not always been a bed of roses. My job placed a lot of stress on our marriage. But we persevered. I have always told my kids, their friends and anyone I know that marriage is the hardest “job” they would ever have. It takes a lot of effort and commitment from both sides to make it work, but anything worth having is worth working as hard as you can to achieve it. The benefits far outweigh the bad parts. I could have cheated numerous times, but when I pledged my vows, I meant every word. Obviously, “Massachusetts” and “Harry” were not quite so sincere. Those two have not only betrayed their spouses, but also their children. You want to mess around? Get a divorce first. I have no idea what either of your spouses has done to deserve the blatant disrespect you two have shown, but I hope they can find happiness with someone else after your divorce. What absolutely floors me is that you would write to Annie’s column, which is published across the country, asking her for suggestions to help you cheat. The only feeling I have for you is absolute contempt. -- You Disgust Me Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Chris was born on September 30th, 1981 in Kamloops BC. He grew up in Cranbrook and graduated from Mount Baker Senior Secondary in 2000. Eventually he decided that he was a big boy and moved to Kelowna where he worked with his brother Kelly Ausman. Chris enjoyed golf, hockey, baseball, poker, and the company of his many friends. His very favourite pastime was traveling home to be with his family, especially his daughter Dylynn Couttie who he was very proud of. Chris is survived by his mother Annie Hutton (Bob), his father Eric Ausman (Lorraine and Mchayla), his best friend and brother Kelly Ausman (Kim), Chris Hutton (Kim), Skylar Ross, his sisters Amy Hutton (Eric) and Kathryn Ross as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. He will also be forever missed by Misty, his very good friend and mother of the love of his life, his daughter Dylynn.

TRENTON, N.J. — Drugmaker Merck & Co. is joining two dozen other pharmaceutical companies and contract laboratories in committing to not use chimpanzees for research. The growing trend could mean the roughly 1,000 chimps in the U.S. used for research or warehoused in laboratory cages could be “retired’’ to sanctuaries by around the end of this decade. That’s according to Kathleen Conlee of the Humane Society of the

United States, which about seven years ago began urging companies to phase out all research on chimpanzees. Improved technology, animal alternatives and pressure by the federal government and animal rights groups have fueled the trend. Caroline Lappetito, a Merck spokeswoman, says the New Jersey-based company decided late last year to stop research on chimpanzees because “the science has advanced and we don’t really need it.’’

Arctic envoy says Russian military buildup about protecting own borders C anadian Press

OTTAWA — Vladimir Putin’s senior Arctic envoy is defending Russia’s military build-up in the Far North, saying it is not directed at Canada or any of its allies. Anton Vasiliev, Russia’s ambassador at large for the Arctic, says Russia is solely concerned with defending its own vast northern regions, which are becoming more vulnerable due to climate change. Vasiliev says Russia once had a naturally secure border of 20,000

kilometres of frozen ice, but that is literally melting way as temperatures rise in the Arctic. He says that makes Russia more vulnerable to illegal encroachments from organized crime, terrorists and illegal migrants. Vasiliev says Russia, Canada, the United States and the five other Arctic Council members all enjoy good military co-operation. He also says Russia is encouraging its Arctic Council allies to bolster their military assets in the Arctic.

Morningafter pill efficacy in question by agency Helen Br answell THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO — Health Canada says it is studying the effectiveness of the socalled “morning after” contraceptive pills in the wake of news they don’t as well in larger women. The federal drug regulator says it is assessing new data that suggests a higher body weight could reduce the effectiveness of emergency contraceptives. Health Canada says it is also looking at whether labelling changes are needed for all brands of the pills to reflect the problem. The department’s statement comes two months after French manufacturer HRA Pharma announced its emergency contraception pill doesn’t work in women who weigh more than 80 kilograms. There are four brands of morning-after pills available without prescription in Canada: Next Choice, from Cobalt Pharmaceuticals; HRA Pharma’s Norlevo; Option 2, from Perrigo International and Plan B from Women’s Health Inc. Health Canada says if it decides action needs to be taken, it will work with manufacturers to update labels and inform consumers. The pills contain higher levels of levonorgestrel than standard oral contraceptives and work by preventing ovulation or fertilization of an egg. They can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex or a contraceptive accident such as a condom breaking. This pills do not have any impact if a woman has already become pregnant. The added wording says the pill’s efficacy is reduced in women weighing 75 kgs or more, and the pill doesn’t work for women who weigh more than 80 kgs.

Red is the colour as global art market comes storming back THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LONDON — Sales next week at London’s Sotheby’s and Christie’s auction houses are expected to generate at least 400 million pounds ($658 million), as the top-end art market puts the global financial crisis behind it. Buyers from emerging markets including China are helping drive art prices to new highs. In sales of Impressionist, modern

and Surrealist art, Christie’s is selling Pablo Picasso’s “Woman in a Turkish Costume” — estimated at up to 20 million pounds — and a still life by Juan Gris valued at up to 18 million pounds. A few blocks away at Sotheby’s, sales include Vincent Van Gogh’s “Man is at Sea” and Lucian Freud’s portrait “Head on a Green Sofa.” Several of the most valuable works are red, a colour So-

Germany should return art looted by Nazis: World Jewish Congress Kirsten Grieshaber THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BERLIN — Germany must make a stronger effort to identify and return thousands of looted art pieces the Nazis took from Jews, the president of the World Jewish Congress said Thursday as he met with top government officials in Berlin to push his case. Ronald Lauder told The Associated Press that Nazi-looted art still hangs in German museums, government offices and private collections. He said the country’s legislation needs to

be changed in order to facilitate its return. The art pieces stolen from the Jews “are the last prisoners of World War II,” Lauder said. “They should be returned to the victims of the Holocaust and their heirs.” The topic became the focus of attention in Germany and abroad after the 2012 discovery of more than 1,400 artworks in the Munich apartment of Cornelius Gurlitt, the son of a Nazi-era art dealer. Some of the paintings, drawings and prints are claimed by

the heirs of former owners persecuted by the Nazis. The affair prompted fresh scrutiny of how Germany handles disputes over Nazi-looted art. Lauder, who was to hold closed-door meetings with Germany’s justice and foreign ministers to push for new solutions, called on Germany to eliminate its 30-year statute of limitations on stolen property cases, a major stumbling block in many restitution cases since World War II ended almost 70 years ago.
