Mayor predicts good news budget for Rimbey By Treena Mielke Councillors put their heads together and hashed out numbers Saturday to finalize a budget which will determine not only a tax bill for Rimbey ratepayers, but decisions about capital and operational expenditures. For the last few weeks the town has been working with an interim budget, but with the new year well underway, a new budget will soon be in place. Mayor Rick Pankiw said he believes the new budget will be “a good news budget,” with tax increases kept to a minimum. He said town staff and council have brought their wish lists to the
table so budget deliberations can proceed. While Pankiw wasn’t ready to divulge the particulars or the dollar figures, he said much of the groundwork has been covered. “We are prepared,” he said. “Our wish lists are done and I believe we’ve covered off priority items. We are ready to proceed within our means.” Last year Rimbey’s $6.17 million budget showed expenditures of $5 million leaving a healthy surplus of $797,000. Last year’s tax bill increased minimally by 1.5 per cent with the average tax bill showing about a $31 increase. The increase was largely due to assessed values of commercial property which had gone up by
almost 30 per cent in the last five years. Pankiw said this year’s tax increase will also depend on assessments. “I truly believe there will be a minimal tax increase, though,” he said. Pankiw said council is looking at a new way to communicate this year’s budget to the public. Previously, a budget meeting has been held at the Rimbey Community Centre with copies of the budget available and the mayor and council on hand to answer any questions or concerns. However, Pankiw doesn’t believe that approach is the best one. “The last three years that I’ve attended budget meetings, the budget seems to be the least
W
of concerns for the people attending. They get derailed and go off on things that have nothing to do with budget. It doesn’t get discussed, but everything else does.” As an alternative to holding a public meeting, Pankiw said council is looking at presenting the budget in the Rimbey Review. By using the newspaper as a way of providing public information, anyone who has concerns or questions about the budget would be welcome to attend a council meeting and speak at an open mike session. A final decision as to how to present the budget to council was made Saturday at the budget meeting.

Athletic park proposed for high school By Treena Mielke The sports teams at Rimbey Junior/Senior High School have lots of heart, hustle and a downright desire to win. This winning spirit has shown up consistently in gold medal wins and provincial and league

championships. The teams continue to place more often than not on the winning side of the scoreboard despite the fact there are no track and field facilities at the school and the rugby and football teams practice and play on the elementary school playground grounds. Bill Argent is a parent with two children attending the school. His youngest son, Wyatt, is in Grade 8 and is on the running team. Argent would not only like his son to have a better place to train and compete, he would like other students to enjoy the same privilege. He would also like the rugby and football teams to have a chance to play on a real athletic park. To make this vision become a reality, Argent, who is the athletic field project fundraising chairman, has worked with a committee to create awareness of the situation and raise funds for the project. Presently, they have plans in place which include a multi-use athletic park that will include a 400 m shale track, surrounding a rugby/football field. The cost of such a park is about $294,000. Argent sees the projsports field at Rimbey ect as a good one, not

only for the school, but for the town. “We feel that this facility will not only benefit the school, but the town of Rimbey as a whole, as the running track will be open to the public during non school and event hours and the facility has the potential to attract larger events such as provincial tournaments.” In addition to the track and fields, a building to be used for storage of sports equipment and as a change facility for sports teams is planned. The cost of this facility has been estimated at $35,279.85. Argent said Rimbey Junior/Senior High School’s administration is behind the project as is Wolf Creek Public Schools. Rimbey’s previous mayor Sheldon Ibbotson and his council were supportive of the project, Argent said, noting the town provided the services of Tagish Engineering to draw up plans for the proposed sports complex. Argent will attend a Ponoka County meeting in February to bring awareness to the county about the
project and he is hopeful they will provide financial support. Anyone who would like to contribute financially to this project may contact Bill Argent at 403-704-5991 or email him at 001wildhorses@ gmail.com or Tim Lekas, principal of Rimbey Jr/Sr High School at tlekas@wolfcreek.ca Sponsors who wish to help with the building will be recognized with signage on or close to the building and those who sponsor the sports field or the project in general will have signage on the field acknowledging their contribution. The field would be named after any sponsor who agreed to commit 50 per cent or more of the total cost of the project. “I would like to acknowledge the town of Rimbey for providing the funding for the cost of the engineering up to this point,” said Argent. “Please know that any contribution, including manpower or equipment, as well as cash donations will be greatly appreciated.”

OPINION
The last scene; what really happened? What do a movie, a town council meeting, a library board meeting and a church service have in common? Nothing, really! The only common denominator is the people in attendance. It is, therefore, the Treena Mielke people who decide exOn The Other Side actly what occurred at the event, who said what, who did what, and who was on first, so to speak. Unless, of course, they are sleeping! Even then, they may dare venture a comment simply because they have not yet learned to abide by the old saying, “it is better to be silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.” Last Sunday my husband and I went to a movie. It was my idea, of course, partly because I really like movies and partly because I thought it would be a good idea to get out of the house because of the smoking thing. “You can’t smoke in a movie,” I told him breathing cheerfulness into the recently acquired smoke free air in his office. “Okay,” he grumbled, no doubt missing his friend, the cigarette, already. The movie was called The Book Thief. It had me at the title. The first picture had barely rolled onto the screen when I mentally left my seat in the theatre to be one with the characters as they lived and died in World War 11. And as I munched my popcorn, I felt in my own heart the anguish of the young girl with wheat coloured braids who lost both her mother and her brother for reasons she couldn’t understand. And I felt a kinship with the boy whose blonde hair hung in a fringe over his mischievous eyes; the boy who
loved the girl fiercely and loyally until a bomb exploded on his street cutting short his young life forever. It was a moving story, and when I left the theatre, the movie went with me, in my head. Days later I sat in my daughter’s cozy living room, sipping tea, while the dog, Marble, snoozed in front of the dancing flames in the fireplace. I was chatting about the movie with my 11-year-old granddaughter who had also seen it. I told her I had trouble understanding the last scene, which I thought, showed the heroine looking in a shop window and seeing the young Jew she had befriended two years before smiling at her. “No, grandma,” she said, flipping her slight little self to an upright position. “She was at the rich people’s house, doing laundry and that’s when she saw her friend.” Later, I asked my husband what he saw when the last scene came on.
“She was looking at some pictures on her piano when she saw her friend,” he said. There you go. Three different people. Three different versions of the truth. Who is right? I think back to town council meetings when the gallery is full of people. I certainly commend the people for darkening a door which some may consider off limits. It isn’t, of course. But, later when the people all gather round and the buzz gets louder, and emotion runs high, sometimes facts are merely annoyances that get in the way like pesky mosquitoes. Interesting! I think we all try very hard to get to the truth, even if it is hidden behind a layer of fog called perception that even Windex can’t wipe away. But one thing I do know for sure. I need to see that movie again.

I would then make my way back to the skidder anticipating the rest I would be able to enjoy as the trees were being winched to the road center. I would place the trees perpendicular to the route of the road and repeat the process all day long. Periodically, a bulldozer or truck would bring dirt to the site and push it over the trees creating a foundation for the road. This was called brush mat. I mentioned at the beginning of this essay that there was a beneficial aspect to the empirical education I received in June, July and August, 1965. I use this story from time to time to encourage my now adult children to persevere. An auxiliary benefit is that it frequently elicits sympathy for poor old dad. Farmers rights to save their seed threatened Dear Editor I would like to inform your readers of a public meeting to be held at Bluffton Hall on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. The meeting will present information on the threat posed to farmers and growers by the Federal Omnibus Bill C-18 currently before Parliament. As guest columnist Jan Slomp explained in the Rimbey Review (page 4, January 28th edition) farmers have little to gain and a lot to lose from Bill C-18. The adoption of UPOV ’91 would speed the demise of the long established and successful public plant breeding system in Canada in favor of a privatized, corporate controlled model. A farmers “right” to retain and use seed from a crop he has grown on his own land would be removed. He would instead be granted a mere “privilege” to retain and use the seed - a privilege which could be withdrawn by Government at any time without any public consultation. This would force farmers to buy new seed every year which in itself would increase their input costs, but coupled with the reduced seed sup-
ply this would allow seed companies to increase prices exponentially. We only have to look to the canola sector where patented seed for the glyphosate tolerant (RR) varieties costs over $500 a bushel compared to a farmer’s selling price of canola of around $10 a bushel. By comparison, barley seed typically costs $8 a bushel yet the farmer can get around $4 for selling the barley he produces from that seed. No wonder the seed companies are lobbying to bring about these changes! The new legislation, if passed, would not only affect the grain and oilseed sector but would extend to all seed including forages. A farmer or rancher seeding timothy or alfalfa could potentially be charged an “end point royalty” by the seed company every time he harvests a hay crop. If these proposed changes concern you or you want to find out more I urge you to attend our meeting. Although this meeting is being organized by the National Farmers Union it is open to everyone from farmers to consumers. Iain Aitken Rimbey
Beatty House is not owned by town Dear Editor, It may be a good idea to clarify something for anyone that may not realize this. The Beatty House is not owned by the town. It was purchased, restored and maintained by a group of community volunteers over the past almost 30 years. It is run by a provincially recognized Society (The Beatty Heritage House Society) and new members are always welcomed. We usually meet the first Monday of each month, and interested community members are welcome to attend. In fact, we really need new members to maintain this community treasure for the town of Rimbey and surrounding community.
Typically, over the years, board members are largely county residents. This is true of many community groups in town, including the library board. A strong town with strong community groups is not only important to town residents, but also to those of us living in the county. We have welcomed the monetary support of government; municipal, provincial and federal. Also the support in many ways of many community members. Hopefully, we can all work together (town and county) to continue to make Rimbey “ the envy of many communities” as quoted from the Town of Rimbey website. Jackie Anderson

Negotiations between town and Johnson Estates now terminated By Treena Mielke A land deal between Johnson Estates, Ponoka County, the Town of Rimbey and Rimoka Housing Authority will not move ahead despite a request by Stacy Johnson to town council to go back to the table. “The town may try to rationalize that they are saving money in the short run, but in my opinion they are going to cost Rimbey in the long run. Sometimes it is tempting to go the easy route, but I believe on a project as large as this one, it is more important for everyone to dig in and do the work and complete the project properly,” Johnson said in her presentation. Negotiations on the land which was earmarked for a proposed new seniors’ lodge and is located west of Rimbey Community Centre had been ongoing for some time. The proposal included the purchase of 9.2 acres of land by The County of Ponoka at a cost not to exceed $300,000. The Town of Rimbey was to pay $170,000 for servicing. However, the land deal recently fell apart when the Town of Rimbey and Johnson Estates could not comes to terms on a development agreement to the satisfaction of both parties. Mayor Rick Pankiw said council, who went behind closed doors to discuss the issue at its Jan. 27 meeting, said council agreed, after coming out of the in-camera session, not to discuss the issue
publicly. “We agreed not to stand behind our Jan. 13 resolution to discontinue development agreement negotiations and not to debate it in public at this time.” Ponoka County Reeve Paul McLaughlin who is also chairman of Rimoka Housing said the land sale agreement is subject to a development agreement being executed between the Town and Johnsons. “We are awaiting written confirmation that an agreement with the town cannot be reached before our agreement with Johnsons can be considered null and void. Should this sale not proceed, the county remains committed to the project and will pursue other options in the community.”
Town owned partially serviced land known as the Bergum property on the northeast of Rimbey was originally offered to Rimoka Housing by the previous council as a potential site for the proposed lodge. “Depending what the county does in their negotiations with Johnson (Estates) I think it is a possibility that this land could be considered as an option,” said Pankiw. The mayor said he and Councillor Einar Olsen met with officials from municipal affairs on Jan. 16 to provide an update for the Rimoka project. Officials told him they would verbally communicate to him the status of finances for seniors’ housing at a later date. He has not yet had a reply.

Rimbey volunteer and former mayor donates money to chamber By Treena Mielke Ray Jarl has decided to step down from one of his volunteer positions, and in so doing, he has opted to take his parting gift and pay it forward. Jarl, who was a director on the Community Futures, East Parkland board for 10 years, retired recently. As a way of saying thank you for his years of dedicated service, the board handed him $1,000 which was to go to the community organization of his choice. Jarl decided to give the money to Rimbey Chamber of Commerce. He selected the chamber because he sees the group as an organization that really can make a difference to the Town of Rimbey. “I chose them because they promote the town,” he said. He gave the money freely, without any strings attached. “I figure they will know the best way to use it and it’s best to just let them go about what they’re doing,” he said. Giving back to the community is not a new characteristic for Jarl, who moved to Rimbey in 1971. He spent 18 years on town council, four of which he was mayor. He is a Lions member and also served on several other committees and organizations. He and his wife Lorraine, who have four children, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren, moved to Rimbey from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Jarl was an electrician, working for Texaco. He believes Rimbey was a good choice for his family. “The people are nice here, very friendly and ready to help each other out,” he said. Chamber president Jackie Stratton is pleased there are people like Jarl in the community; people who are willing to financially help out the chamber, a non-profit organization. “We are very honored and excited,” she said. Although the chamber has not yet decided where the funds will go, Stratton wants to see the money goes towards a longterm project or item and not put into a general account. Hans Spelt, president of Community Futures, East Parkland
commended Jarl for a job well done during his time as director. “He didn’t have much to say, but when he did speak everybody sat up and took notice,” he said. “And he did have a great sense of humor. He will be missed for sure.” Community Futures is a lending organization that helps candidates who may not be able to borrow from another lending institution. Its mission is to develop, diversify and sustain local economies. CFEP provides business advice, business training, assists businesses as an alternative lender and assists community-based economic development projects. All lending decisions are made by volunteer representatives, who come to the board table to provide insight into the communities they represent, but more importantly, to work with the other members to direct resources and activities to benefit the entire region.

Multi-million dollar Agrim Centre begins to rise The landscape is changing in the town of Rimbey as the multi- million dollar Agrim Centre begins to rise. Construction on the multi-use agricultural facility began in July, and with the steel frame now in place, residents can see the scope of what the 60,000 square feet of space will offer the community. “We’ve got funding secured up to the lockup stage,” explained Rimbey Agricultural Society President Tim Edge. “We’re entering the next push of fundraising, so we can get the building finished on the inside, and ready for use within a year.” “So far, the building is on time and on budget.”
Boosted by a $125,000 grant from the provincial government’s Community Facility Enhancement Program, momentum for the project is on the upswing. “As people see the Agrim Centre taking shape, there’s more excitement,” commented Edge. “We’ve had great ongoing backing from the County of Ponoka. They’ve kept the snow plowed so work could continue along, despite our heavy snowfall this winter. The town of Rimbey has been very supportive too, and we’re looking forward to some more good news in the 2014 budget.” “But we’re also seeing businesses and the community step up, like Eckrim Agen-
cies with a major $25,000 sponsorship, as well as both the Rimbey and Bluffton 4-H Clubs.” Several families have also already taken advantage of the unique Family Sponsorship program, at $25/square foot, to show their support of the project. Donor plaques will acknowledge such contributions, and a form is available from the website (www.agrim.ca). It has been printed in the Rimbey Review newspaper as well. “We really believe the benefits to the town and to the whole region will be significant,” added Edge. “That’s why our focus now is on corporate sponsorship, because the Agrim will have a big trickle-down effect on the local economy.” Rimbey’s own World Livestock Auctioneer
Champion Danny Skeels is one of those who sees the potential impact of the Agrim Centre. “It could be a big draw, because there just isn’t anything like it further west,” noted Skeels, who sells dozens of purebred sales each year. “Bull shows, trade fairs, cattle sales – I think there’s big opportunity to expand and keep the place busy.” Skeels is also very active in the 4-H program. “We’ve already been talking at an interclub level that we could have some regional livestock shows that would be one more step for our kids to get experience to go on to the next level. Rimbey’s annual Women’s Day will offer huge potpourri of events By Treena Mielke Let’s Colour Our World, the theme of this year’s Rimbey’s annual women’s conference, is reflected in the choice of sessions the committee has selected as well as the variety of vendors and fascinating keynote speaker who will be in attendance. The women’s conference will be held Feb. 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Rimbey Community Centre and promises to provide a day well worth attending with an interesting potpourri of sessions and shopping opportunities offered. Following registration and refreshments, the day will kickoff with a welcome and presentation by keynote speaker George Boelcke entitled Colorful Personalities. Boelcke is an author and speaker who has more than 25 years of real world experience in retail and finance. Boelcke defines personalities into four general colors; gold, green, blue and orange. Each color has specific personality traits that make them unique. Many people are a cross of colors, and some are very obviously one color, de-

The evening will feature a banquet, silent auction, entertainment from Duane Steele and dancing. Tickets are available at Stationery Stories & Sound, T&S Feeds, Crop Production Services, and Midwest Propane for $60 in advance, or $40 at the door for just the concert and the dance. “People are realizing the Agrim is the biggest thing to hit Rimbey in years,” said Edge. “Lockup of the building could be within the next six months. We want to have the funds in place so everything can keep rolling on towards the finish line.” For further information or to donate auction items, contact Tim Edge 403-354-6730, check the website www.agrim. ca or search Rimbey Agriculture Society on Facebook.

Bentley society gets funding help from Monsanto grant By June Norvila Thanks to many generous grants and donations the Bentley Ag Centre’s $35,500 kitchen upgrade is complete and the kitchen is now accredited. Upgrades included a commercial stove with two ovens and a range hood, stainless steel table and counter, dish sanitizer and racks, and special wall paneling. Major funding was received from the provincial Community Facility Enhancement Program ($15,000) and the federal Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund ($17,800). Other donations came from the Keyera Corporation and the local Santa’s Breakfast. Another large contributor was Monsanto Fund Canada who was only in their second official year of the Canada’s Farmers Grow Communities program, to try to help support local farming communities. Farmers who wanted to apply had to fit criteria themselves to be able to nominate a favorite community charitable or not-for-profit organization in their local community that they wished to win help for. After husband Dwayne Johnson found out about the possible grant through company advertising last spring, Jennifer Johnson from Bentley was one who was quick to apply for the $2500 grant in the Bentley & District Agricultural Society name. Although there were no strings attached to spending the funds, Jennifer said she had mentioned the kitchen upgrades underway at the local Ag Centre, and that is what it would be applied to.
At the Ag Society’s Annual General Meeting last November Johnson announced being informed about receiving the grant. “We are working to help farmers make an even bigger impact in their communities by investing in organizations they care about,” states Trish Jordan, Public and Industry Affairs Director at Monsanto Canada, headquartered in Winnipeg, on their website, “and is part of a broad commitment by the Monsanto Fund to invest in farm communities. We look forward to learning about all the programs and causes that are important to farmers and rural communities.” “Monsanto is committed to helping farmers grow their communities and improving the lives of rural residents. This program allows us to shine the spotlight on farmers and recognize them for the important contributions they make to their communities, not only as farmers but as vital contributors to their community’s overall well-being.” There were 378 entries in the 2013 Canada’s Farmers Grow Communities program with 60 winners. In Alberta there were over 70 applications with 18 winners including the Bentley Agricultural Society as well as the Bentley School Chest Society. The successful Bentley School Chest Society farmer nominator was Eric Hyink from Lacombe who has two children in the Bentley school system. He said he believes the money the School Chest got will go towards sports equipment and things like new mats. No more information was currently available.

Bluffton prepares for 4-H show and sale coming in spring By Leah Trenson On December 27 a few of our members prepared a meal for the Ronald McDonald House Home for Dinner program in Red Deer. Everyone had a great time at the tobogganing party on December 29. Thanks to the VonGunten family for hosting this fun event. The Etiquette banquet was on January 2. We learned about proper manners, table place setting and much more. Thank you to our guest speaker, Brenda Schoepp. We would also like to thank Dan and Karen Skeels for sponsoring $500 towards the supper. On January 12 we had our public speaking. Deer isn’t causing Sylvan Lake’s The Boom Chucka Boys to call the night a failure. Guitarist Joel Rathjen admitted to being disappointed at not winning in any of the five categories the band was nominated, but felt that positives from the night far outweighed the negatives. “You can’t say you’re not disappointed to not win,” he said. “Everyone wants to win something, but I think our time will come, and we’re not going to beat ourselves up about it. “We’re honoured to be nominated for so many awards.” As one of the nominees for the Rising Star Sylvan Lake’s The Boom Chucka Boys, shown here in a still from a television special set to air on CMT this spring, didn’t receive any award, The Boom Chucka Boys, along with the awards at the ACMA awards in Red Deer recently, but were nominated award’s other nominees, were given the chance to in five different categories. Dear Editor, I was utterly dumbfounded to read the refusal of council to allow Gayle Rondeel to hold a voluntary position as a board member for the Library. There was no reason given, which leads myself and others to suspect that this is a personal judgement made by some council members. Presently, the library board is short three members and at no other time has a person’s application needed to be voted on by council, if they are recommended by the librarian and the CEO, both of which Gayle was. The requirements are that the person be interested in the public’s good and in literature and books; both of which Gayle is. I feel there is some personal vendetta against Gayle as her track record for every committee she has been on shows excellent results; ie: Farmers’ Market, soccer association, etc. I should think a forward thinking council would be only too glad to have her in a position like this. And you don’t have to pay her or have a headhunter go after her to take the position. Linda Christensen Rimbey Editor’s note: The library act states council appoints board members when it is a municipal library involved. The appointments of the members of municipal boards shall be made on the date fixed by council. Any vacancy arising from any cause must be filled by council as soon as reasonably possible for council to do so. Libraries Act Section 5, 1 and 2. Linda Christensen, Rimbey

Abbot J Michaelchuk
May 21, 1989 - November 18, 2013 How can his life be told on a page It’s brave and its vibrant It’s not white and black Please fill in the colors To words that cannot breath Words that cant laugh words that cannot see See our own hero- A gem - A true Man This paper cannot hold him, only hearts can Born to Mark and Marie Michaelchuk in Sundre, Alberta May 21,1989. He passed away at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary November 18, 2013 following a car accident. Abbot was the favourite among his siblings Ginger, Jacob and Marica. He was also adored by his Grandparents Bette and Duane Michaelchuk, and John and Flo Demyen along with aunts, uncles and cousins. As a child Abbot would play hard and then we would find him face first somewhere fast asleep! Abbot was ever a people person, he would strike up a conversation with just about anyone. If it had wheels he’d ride if it had a steering wheel he’d drive it. He loved burning around on his yellow 50cc trike and pulling his friends behind it on GTs, as a test before he graduated to bigger and faster toys. Abbot had a special gift with animals. From a gecko to a hedgehog, to your regular fuzzy puppy, Abbot was never without a pet. His best dog got its name when Abbot was 4 yrs old and wanted to name him as soon as Mom brought him home. She told him to just wait a bit and name him later. So he eagerly started calling Later! Later! No she said just whistle for him. So, really wanting his puppy to come to him he called Whistle, Whistle, and Whistle the pup became. Abbot grew up to be the kind of teenager that always had a big motley crew of friends. Everybody liked his easygoing personality and his never ending jokes. His sister Marica was always touring around with him and she has said that many people only know her as Abbots sister. He was especially close to the Fisher boys in Sundre. Many a good time was had with stuck trucks, tipped canoes, skidooing, tubing, horseback riding and dirt biking with his buddies. As a teenager he did a lot of world travelling with his Mom, Dad and sister, Marica. He spent time in Mexico, New York and El Salvador. On October 22, 2005 at the age of sixteen, Abbot was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Onoway, Alberta. Abbot had an innate love for people and a big heart. He had a strong hate for injustice, and treated all people fairly. After graduating High School in Rocky Mountain House in 2007, he immediately started a carpentry apprenticeship with his brother and good friend Jacob Michaelchuk. He finished his Journeyman Carpentry in February 2011. The brothers built up a large company called GRIP construction. Abbot was a super hard worker and a great boss. He worked alongside some good friends and loved to go for a big breakfast at the hotel after an early morning or an all night job. Some of the guys he loved to work with were Patty Fehr, Grant Zuidhof (Big Buddy) and Curtis Babcock. He was well respected by all, was fun to work with as well as work for, a rare combination. Abbot is sorely missed on the job, especially by his brother, Jacob. Abbot had other family too-In the Rimbey Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was rarely missing from his meetings with his extended family at the Kingdom hall. Abbot was especially close to the Brockhoffs, mainly Andrew. They had lots of awesome road trips together. The whole congregation feels his loss painfully. They can’t wait to see his smiling face again and hear him laugh. He also is terribly missed by his girlfriend Cassandra Blair of Red Deer, AB. They were a great couple, Abbot always talking her ear off and she always laughing at his jokes. She cant wait to see him again. In honor of Abbot J Michaelchuk, over 400 people attended a celebration of his life at the Rimbey Community Centre on November 23, 2013. Officiating was his brother-in-law Seth Petersen. It was a wing night, because Abbot loved his wing nights every week with his friends. He would have wanted everyone to have a good time! There’s a bible scripture that reads: For hardly would anyone die for a righteous man, though perhaps for a good man someone may dare to die. Many would have died for Abbot. He was a man that earned respect and love. It was because he was good. Goodness is a quality of the heart- It is impartiality, bravery and integrity. Abbot possessed all these qualities. He was a decent man who treated all fair. You knew when you were around him that he would take care of you, he would even risk his life. Abbot was a boss who would never make you work harder then he himself was willing to work. A neighbour who always had time to talk and help out. He was a friend who loyally stuck it out come what may. A brother who would stretch himself in every direction to make sure everyone was happy. A son who took care of his mom and loved to spend time with his dad. Nothing we do will be as good without him. Here’s a man we can take a lesson from. He is asleep for now, but we will never forget him. We will let his memory make us all better people. When we see him again we will thank him for the way he lived his life, and the lessons he left us. For now there is a hole left in our hearts, lives and family that can’t be filled. We love you Abbot. Can’t wait to see you again.

Our parents were married in Calgary in 1955 and lived in DeWinton until buying the farm in the Lavesta Community near Rimbey in 1960, where we all grew up. In 1984 Mom married Argyll Lyster and moved to Donalda, AB. In 2010 Mom moved back to Rimbey to her new condo; where she resided until her passing. Mom always loved horses and was able to live one of her biggest dreams by going to the Kentucky Derby. She also loved to travel and was able to go to England, Europe, the United States and of course to see sister Jamie in New Zealand. We would like to thank our Cousin Dennis Andersen, and her friends Linda, Florence, Collette, and Margaret for their kindness and friendship, we know that it meant a lot to her.

What’s Happening #50 - # 70
Cheryl May (Anderson) LANGMUIR It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cheryl May Langmuir of Rimbey Alberta on January 27, 2014 at the age of 54 years. Cheryl was born November 15, 1959 in Rimbey, Alberta. Growing up on a farm east of Rimbey where the seed set for what would be the passion of her life. Cheryl met Bob Langmuir when she was seventeen and went on to marry him on July 29, 1977 and one year later they were expecting a child. Carmen was born on November 22, 1978. The 3 of them enjoyed life together - spending time with family, riding horses (well maybe not Bob) and always lots of camping and fishing. Sometimes it was hard to believe that she only had one child as she opened her home to all nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters and loved them all just the same. Cheryl made her home welcoming to all those that came, the coffee was always on and a place at the table was always yours. The happiest days of her life came when her grandchildren were born, first with twin boys who would spend hours camping, fishing and playing with her and then a granddaughter that not only completed the family but proved she could trick Grandma into anything by just smiling. The passion of her life came through her animals. She was always out tending to the cows and horses no matter what the time or temperature. She was known to say “If you are going to have animals you better look after them”. She also spent many years of her life as the coach of the Rimbey Gymnastics Club where she met some outstanding kids that she still spoke about years later. Cheryl will be lovingly remembered by her beloved husband Bob Langmuir; her mother Florence Anderson of Rimbey; daughter Carmen (Trent) Ewasiw of Rochester, 3 grandchildren Carson Ewasiw, Benjamin Ewasiw and Anna Ewasiw along with 3 sisters Kathy (Barry) Maser of Rimbey, Carol Anderson of Rimbey, Morgan (Brendan) Johnston of Thorsby and 2 brothers George (Rhonda) Anderson of Rimbey and Christopher (Joy) Anderson of Thorsby. Along with numerous nieces, nephew, aunts, uncles and cousins held close to her heart. She was predeceased by her father Andrew Anderson, John Crookes (special family friend) Jesse Anderson (nephew) and Rashel Anderson (niece). A Celebration of Cheryl’s life was held from the Rimbey United Church on Friday January 31, 2014 at 1:00 PM with Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Stollery Children’s Hospital 1502 College Plaza 8215-112 Street Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2C8.
