Hip-hoppin’ to tackle bullying Halkirk teen showcases acting, dance talent in poignant music video JOHN M AC N EIL Independent editor

Josh Blumhagen is anything but a bully, but the Halkirk native played the role to perfection in a music video released online last weekend. Blumhagen, 17, also showcased his smooth hip-hop dancing ability in the anti-bullying video, which features Edmonton urban-pop vocalist ESMA. The production attracted more than 3,500 hits within three days of the video being posted on YouTube. “The video was pretty good,” said Blumhagen, a Grade 11 student at Gus Wetter School in Castor. “I think it turned out well. “This was my first music video that I’ve done. I was pretty excited, for sure.” The 24-year-old ESMA recruited Blumhagen from his Edmonton hiphop dance studio, 3rd Street Beat, to play a lead role in a video for her new single, Fall Back. “Last spring, ESMA and her casting partner came into our class and they gave us information about it,” Blumhagen said Monday from Edmonton. “And then ESMA approached me after that and she asked me to sign up and to come by, because she wanted me as the role of the bully in the video. “She just said that I had the look for the part, and she had seen my dancing a little bit beforehand. She just thought I’d be a good person for the role.” In the opening scene, she takes

Blumhagen’s iPhone from him in a school hallway after he commits an online bullying offence. He remains prominent throughout the video as one of the dancers in the forefront. ESMA told the Edmonton Journal last weekend that she plans to donate at least half of the proceeds from Fall Back sales to the Amanda Todd Legacy Fund, an anti-bullying campaign founded after the suicidal death of the 15-year-old British Columbia girl in 2012. “Her story just touched me,” ESMA said. “(The song) is about having self-confidence and knowing your self-worth. And when people try to bring you down, just tell them to fall back.”

Todd’s mother, Carol, visited Stettler last summer as part of her anti-bullying educational campaign. The legacy fund supports antibullying programs and offers help for teens with mental-health issues. ESMA’s colourful video was shot last summer over two days and features scenes from her old school, J. Percy Page, along with skatepark shots showing Blumhagen dancing in the bowl. “It was really cool,” he said of the filming. “There was a lot of action going on behind us. We had our own graffiti artist go there and do the Fall Back sign on the skatepark … Yeah, it was really cool.” At the same time, a poignant

message was delivered, as ESMA intended. “I think she did a very good job of promoting her message and her cause that she had against bullying, and cyber-bullying in particular,” Blumhagen said. “Her cause is definitely a good one. It’s really important to get the word out there and to help people that need it in those types of situations that are being bullied or cyber-bullied.” Blumhagen might be a relative newcomer to acting, but he’s a seasoned dancer who has been into hip-hop for a decade. “I’ve been dancing since I was about seven,” he said. “I started at Peacock Dance Academy — that was in Castor — and then I just recently moved to 3rd Street Beat. This is my second year there.” He spends three days a week in Edmonton — Saturday through Monday — while residing with relatives in St. Albert. He stays connected with his Monday high school classes at Gus Wetter via Skype. Sandwiched between two-hour practices on Saturday and Monday is his five-and-a-half-hour dance session each Sunday. “It’s definitely a workout,” Blumhagen said. “The studio I go to, 3rd Street Beat, is an all hiphop studio. And they go into all the different kind of genres of hip-hop, all the different styles that there is … there’s a lot of variety there, so it’s good. Continued on Page A2

THE STETTLER INDEPENDENT ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT A GREEN TIP: “Buy Nothing Day”

Buy Nothing Day is a day to become aware of consumerism – to unshop and unspend. On Buy Nothing Day, practice and reflect on the three Rs hierarchy: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. When you reduce what you acquire, you reduce waste, and that’s the first rule of thumb in the three Rs hierarchy. It’s hard to resist the deals that make us consumers, but really, do we need more stuff? No one can do everything. Everyone can do something. Sponsored by the

Dave McCourt of Stettler’s Woodcraft by Dave is working on what he considers his most difficult project to date: restoring a threshing machine from more than 180 years ago. The thresher belongs to the Stettler P&H Elevator Preservation Society, and McCourt got involved with the project when he saw a picture of “The Little Giant” in a newsletter that the society issued. “I looked at that and I just headed to the elevator with my hand in the air and said, ‘Take me!’” McCourt said with a laugh. “I’m interested in restoration — I restore old vehicles — and it’s just something with wood that needed restoring, and it just looked like a fun job.” McCourt has had a woodcraft business since 1997, but has always been interested in woodworking. He primarily creates

smaller pieces, and the company specialty is laser engraving. He said he learned woodcraft on his own. “I learned from my own mistakes.” Although he reports that the thresher is shaping up to be his favourite piece, he also considers it the most challenging. “It’s taking a lot of thought, a lot of experimentation,” McCourt said. “It was actually quite complete, but there are things that are missing. There’s a tremendous amount of research, trying to find the right way of doing things.” Most of that research is done online, although he has had contact with experts in the U.S. He has been talking to someone from a historical society in Pennsylvania, where the thresher was originally built. He has also managed to track down a similar thresher in California. “They’re very hard to find, probably because they’re built with wood and they’ve rotted

away,” McCourt said. Right now, he’s waiting on someone from California to obtain pictures and measurements to help with the restoration. McCourt said it’s been easy to gain information from other people. “Everyone is really good. Especially the museum and historical societies, they’re really good.” Because the thresher is mostly made of wood that has since rotted, McCourt has had to replace a lot of the wood. He plans to keep as much of the original paint job as possible. He estimated that he has already spent 400 to 500 hours on the project, and he hopes it will be done by the summer. After it’s finished, the preservation society wants to keep it in a shed and do demonstrations. “Hopefully, we can fire up the thresher and show people how it used to be done,” he said. reporter@stettlerindependent.com

Blumhagen dances on a career path Continued from front page “I really have noticed a difference (since joining the Edmonton studio). I’ve learned a lot of history and a lot of stuff about hip-hop. I’ve really expanded what I know about it and my skill-set.” Blumhagen believes he might be on a career path and envisions dancing in his post-high school plans. “Absolutely,” he said. “There are post-secondary programs, or there are some semi-professional companies that can help you make the transition from just a student into a professional dancer. There’s quite a few opportunities out there — a lot of different paths that you can take.” On his dance path, his inspiration to try hiphop came from his older sister, Anissa, now a college student studying fashion design. “I had seen her (dance) classes and I kind of wanted to try it out for myself, so that’s how I started with Peacock,” Blumhagen said. “And the

studio owner there, Carmen Peacock, she was really good. She kind of led me into the hip-hop world.” Blumhagen’s passion for dance might be the road less travelled for young rural Albertans, but there are no such boundaries in his academy, he said. “Most of the dancers are from in and around Edmonton, but it’s not too different (for me). Everybody at the 3rd Street Beat is really good at accommodating everyone. They’re just really friendly and it’s kind of like a big family there.” When he’s not dancing, Blumhagen likes to ski. But he’s never far from the dance scene. Even when he’s home, he instructs aspiring dancers. “I’m doing a few private lessons,” he said. “I like passing on my knowledge to other people and introducing them the way I was introduced into hip-hop, as well.” editor@stettlerindependent.com

School board

Clearview: Go big or stay home ROBIN TARNOWETZKI Independent reporter Clearview School Division is trying to decide what kind of buses to buy for its fleet, and the main issue is large versus small. The recommendation from the school division was to ask for quotations for two 70-passenger buses and six 46-passenger buses. The immediate argument was whether those buses were too large. The school board was looking into smaller microbuses, but they have been proven to be less durable than larger buses, the board meeting was told last week. Typically, school buses are in service for 10 years, and then get downgraded to substitute buses, the report read. With a small bus, that wouldn’t necessarily be an option. “We might get 10 years out of them (a small bus), but we would certainly never be able to cycle them into our subfleet,” said Clearview’s associate superintendent, Peter Neale.

School board trustee Yvette Cassidy was immediately opposed to getting the larger buses, and pointed out that the number of students who use the bus wouldn’t justify getting large buses. “I question the size of the buses you’re ordering,” Cassidy said. “The routes are getting smaller, not bigger. I just don’t see why we want to go out there with the biggest bus we can.” There’s a $1,500 cost difference between a big and small bus, which proponents of the larger bus argued was comparatively small, especially because parts are more interchangeable and the difference in fuel cost wouldn’t be “significant,” said vicechairman Dave Goodwin. “If we take off the public concern of seeing empty spots on our buses, it makes sense,” Neale said on the purchase of the larger bus. Cassidy said saving $1,500 per bus wasn’t an insignificant number. “Fifteen-hundred dollars for (each of) eight buses, it adds up,” Cassidy said. In the end, the motion to ask for quotes on eight new buses — two

70-passenger buses and six 46-passenger buses — was passed, with Cassidy and trustee John Schofer opposed. Steps aimed at reducing idling Clearview School Division is partnering with the eco clubs from ChristKing Catholic School and Stettler Middle School, the Heartland Beautification Committee and the Stettler Elementary School Parent Council to try to reduce vehicle idling in Stettler. The guidelines for bus warmup times are five minutes for warm weather, five minutes on high idle for -5 to -15 degrees, 10 minutes on high idle for -15 to -25 degrees and 20 to 30 minutes on high idle for -25 to -40 degree weather. Tests moved to fall This past spring, Alberta Education announced that students will be writing Student Learning Assessments in the fall instead of Provincial Achievement Tests near the end of the year. Clearview schools will be piloting the SLAs next fall, starting with Grade 3.

VAN ROLLOVER — No injuries were reported Sunday afternoon after a van left the road and flipped near the intersection of Highway 11 and Highway 12. Stettler RCMP, the Stettler Regional Fire Department and EMS responded to the 12:39 p.m. call. RCMP reported that the 20-year-old female driver and two other occupants weren’t injured, because they were wearing seatbelts. “The 45-year-old mother of the driver was wheelchairbound and was assisted by Good Samaritan Bill Scott from Stettler until emergency personnel arrived,” said Const. Carter Boytinck. “Icy road conditions and driver inexperience were factors. There were no charges laid.”

Child’s death remains mystery By Murray Crawford Black Press An inquiry into the 2011 death of a newborn child at the Stettler hospital was unable to determine how he died. Born a few week prematurely, at 36 weeks gestation, James Andrew Stahl died on Aug. 9, 2011, at 6:40 a.m., within 12 hours of his birth. A two-day public fatality inquiry was held on Sept. 19 and 20, 2013, in Stettler Provincial Court before Judge Jim Mitchell. The final report to the minister of justice and the attorney general released on Wednesday said the medical cause of death was sudden unexplained death in infancy, but the manner is undeterminable. Matilda Stahl, 31, was admitted to the Stettler hospital at 6:18 p.m. on Aug. 8, 2011. At 7:41 p.m., she gave birth to the child. At 6:41 a.m. the following morning, a nurse entered the mother’s private room and found the infant and the mother sharing the bed. Their was a space between the two. The infant was noted to be blue-coloured and no vital signs were apparent. Attempts were made to resuscitate the infant but they were unsuccessful. A post-mortem examination found the presence of two drugs: acetaminophen and quinine. The medical examiner and toxicologist determined the acetaminophen was detected at a very low level and they believed that its presence had no

significance in the child’s death. The quinine was not administered at the hospital and is not suggested to be administered to pregnant women. The examination determined the amount in the infant’s blood was low and the medical examiner couldn’t rule out the possibility it may have contributed to the child’s

death in some fashion. There was no evidence presented to suggest cosleeping. According to Alberta Office of the Medical Examiner, co-sleeping was a factor in 42 per cent of deaths classified as sudden infant death syndrome and was a factor in 74 per cent of the other deaths between 2005 and 2010. A

total of 172 unexplained infant deaths were recorded in that time frame. No recommendations were made in Mitchell’s report. However, the report did say that, from testimony given, Alberta Health Services’ Safe Infant Sleep initiative is a positive, proactive effort to improve maternity care.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Trudeau calls on PM to match Senate move Dear Editor: Canadians want their leaders to come forward with practical solutions to our problems, and they have been clear that the Senate has become one of those problems. It is broken and needs to be fixed. Through extreme patronage and partisanship, the Senate has become an institution that poorly serves the interests of Canadians. Canadians are especially disenchanted with the antiquated convention that sees senators appointed by one person: the prime minister.

The Senate is a public institution. It should not continue to be run like the Prime Minister’s private club. The Liberal Party has taken immediate action to address these challenges. From now on, our national caucus will only include elected members of Parliament, not senators. All of our senators are now completely independent of the Liberal Party of Canada Caucus. Furthermore, if I earn the privilege of serving Canadians as their prime minister, I will put in place an open, transparent

and public process for appointing and confirming senators. This process will be developed with experts and will be modelled after other non-partisan appointment processes, like Supreme Court Justices and Order of Canada recipients. These changes take effect right away, without opening up the Constitution. They avoid a long, rancorous and likely pointless constitutional debate that would distract us from solving more important problems. I am calling on the prime minister to do the right thing and match this action.

As the majority party in the Senate, he could achieve immediate and comprehensive change right away if he decided to. Taken together, these steps represent the most significant and concrete actions to reform the Senate in its history. These proposals are the next step to create real, positive change, but they will not be our last.

‘You can kill us, but you cannot hurt us’ Flavius Justinus (Justin) was born in 100 AD as a Roman citizen and into a family of means. He became highly educated and was especially engaged in researching and understanding various philosophies. He studied stoicism, Aristotle, Socrates, Plato and Pythagoras. However, none of these satisfied his thirst for truth. Restless, he found himself walking on a beach in 132 AD, where he encountered an older man, a Christian, who engaged him in conversation. The man began pointing out the inadequacies of various philosophies; things that Justin hadn’t really considered. Though he was initially opposed to what he was hearing, following the dialogue, he converted to what he’d previously referred to as “the despised faith.” Justin was born in Samaria near the well where Jesus met the Samaritan woman referred to in John Chapter 4. Like that woman, Justin had found the Living Water and he drank deeply and was satisfied. Justin’s conversion was by no means the end of the story. He came to love the Scriptures, and said that they “possess a terrible power in themselves, and are sufficient to inspire those who

turn aside … the sweetest rest is afforded those who make a diligent practice of them.” From 155-160 AD, Justin wrote a two-part “apologeia”; an explanation or apologetic of the Christian faith. He addressed this to Antonius Pius (Roman Emperor from 138-161 AD). For that reason, he’s referred to as the “Father of Christian Apologetics.” Justin lived and served as a Christian layperson, philosopher and apologist for about 30 years. Christians faced great persecution during that time, so it is no surprise that he was eventually arrested. The Emperor at that time was Marcus Aurelius. He ruled from 161-180 AD, and incidentally was portrayed by Richard Harris in

the movie “Gladiator.” There is a misunderstanding about why Christians were martyred under the Roman Empire. It wasn’t because they worshiped Christ, but because they worshiped Him alone and refused to engage in Emperor worship. Roman authorities cared little how many deities you had as long as you paid homage to the Emperor. Justin had already spoken boldly on this matter. He’d explained in his apologetics that though Christians willingly pay taxes and pray for the Emperor, they will not pray to the Emperor! He also told those who were persecuting Christians that because of the promises of Christ, most notably the resurrection, “You can kill us, but you cannot hurt us.” In 165 AD, he was put on trial as a Christian and given the opportunity to recant. He stood firm and was beheaded, earning his second title, “Justin Martyr.” “The tyrant dies and his rule is over, the martyr dies and his rule begins.” Soren Kierkegaard

THE STETTLER INDEPENDENT COMMENTARY

‘Alberta under attack from formidable force’ The simple act of uttering words or a combination of words has very little meaning until the user gives them purpose. The meaning is determined by actions of the user. Words are nothing more than sounds or a single linguistic unit comprised of letters, without the accompanying actions to qualify them and ultimately give them a meaning. Like a dark shape moving under you while you swim in the ocean, words can be dangerous or innocuous. On June 4, 1940, Prime Minister Winston Churchill gave one of the most inspirational speeches in the British House of Common’s history. Within that speech were some very prophetic single linguistic units that were indeed backed-up with the actions of not only a leader, but an entire country. His speech described how the government under his leadership was committed to go on until the end defending their Island and their empire — whatever the cost may be. Churchill, with true conviction, firmly spoke those historic words about how they would fight in France, on the seas and oceans, and in the air, for their sovereignty. Now imagine the consequences that the British Empire and the world would have suffered had his

From the Legislature MLA Report by Rick Strankman words not been backed up by his actions and those of his countrymen. All too often, words within government seem innocuous, but in the end, they end up being dangerous. In Alberta, “living within our means” seems to have taken on the role of a predator devouring our future and the future of generations to come. Alberta is under attack from a very formidable force, it’s not by an enemy that is armed and aggressive looking to subjugate the province, but instead it comes in the form of something just as destructive. The attack manifests itself in the form of crushing and crippling debt. Just last week, a sign of how far the enemy has advanced showed itself on the Canadian Taxpayers

Federation’s Alberta debt clock after it eclipsed $8 billion. This seems to be a direct contradiction to the words “living within our means” that adorns all communications coming from the Alberta government. Words that are obviously nothing more than sounds or a single linguistic unit comprised of letters. That dark shape swimming under Albertans today is a predatory animal that has rows of razor-sharp teeth intent on devouring the wealth of Alberta and it will have our children’s and grandchildren’s futures for dessert. That dangerous predator is debt and it is the enemy of all of Alberta and our future. As the elected steward of the future of the province of Alberta for Drumheller-Stettler, I will continue to fight for fiscal restraint and put into practice the words “living within our means” that have completely lost their meaning in this province. Alberta is dealing with an enemy less obvious than what was faced by Churchill, but it could prove to be even more destructive, should those in government decide not to defend our island by controlling their spending. Rick Strankman is the MLA for Drumheller- Stettler.

COOL setback just another skirmish in overall trade battle Canadian cattle exports to the U.S. received a setback recently with the passage of the American Farm Bill by the House of Representatives. The bill contained no reference to repealing the contentious Country of Origin Legislation (COOL), nor amending it in any way. That legislation has reduced access to the American market and reduced prices to Canadian cattle producers. The major American cattle producer and meat processor organizations and their Canadian allies had lobbied vigorously to have COOL radically changed to make it more trade friendly. The legislation not only discriminates against Canadian cattle and beef imports, but would have a significant negative impact on the viability of the American meat-processing industry. But in the end, it was all to no avail as the issue was barely mentioned in media reports. Any concern for COOL was overshadowed by the bigger political issues such as domestic food aid programs, crop subsidies and conservation initiatives, all of which are part of the American farm bill. There also seemed to be urgency to get the much-delayed bill passed. That usually causes minor issues to fall off the table. The question is was there any real hope that the Farm Bill process would have actually made changes to COOL. Probably not, but in the somewhat surreal world of trade discussions, there is a fine line between hope and delusion. Compromise tends to trump common sense, just to get the deal done. One wonders why the recent WTO decision striking down the trade legality of COOL didn’t provide some incentive

to change the legislation. John Masswohl of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association notes that the WTO decision should have been an incentive, but the WTO process itself may have sabotaged any such momentum. Another WTO meeting is scheduled for late February to discuss American compliance with the original WTO decision. That may have been just the excuse many legislators needed to push COOL aside and await a positive outcome of the upcoming WTO meeting. That may have been grasping at straws, but with so many big issues dominating the Farm Bill, punting COOL down the road was politically expedient. Besides, most of the big general American farm organizations were in favour of the bill without the changes to COOL. This setback is just another skirmish in the overall trade battle. The COOL focus now will be back to the WTO process. The next meeting will review U.S. compliance with the original WTO decision. Most opinion is that proposed American compliance is now worse than the original COOL regulations. That would make the next WTO decision predictable and allow Canada to retaliate with tariffs on U.S. imports. Canada has compiled a list of products for retaliation, but whether Canada will actually carry out the threat is another question.

It’s been a long time since draconian trade action has been taken by Canada against the U.S. Canada has put great faith in the trade resolution mechanism of the North American Free Trade Agreement for resolving issues with the U.S. That approach could make retaliation just an idle threat, something American trade officials would be aware of. At that point, it becomes a case of who will blink first. What would help is if Mexico, which is party to the WTO decision, would stand fast with Canada and jointly retaliate at the same time. That would get the attention of American trade officials to perhaps soften the impact of COOL through regulatory and budget amendments without having to revert back to using the almost impossible legislative route. That’s the compromise route where many of these issues are resolved. The problem for the ag industry is that the imposition of retaliatory tariffs against U.S. imports has to be done by the Minister of Finance. Unlike the Ministers of Agriculture and International Trade, who enthusiastically back retaliation, the Finance Minister has to look at the bigger picture. As much as the industry may not like it, the reality is that agriculture industry issues don’t get much respect or attention in the economy big picture by the federal government. There is a big job ahead for the anti-COOL lobbyists. The WTO process is very slow, so if nothing else, they have time to continue the battle. Good luck to them. THE STETTLER INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ZONE

STETTLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Submitted by Stettler Elementary School On Friday, Jan. 24, the kindergarten classes enjoyed a fun “Pete the Cat” day. Everyone dressed in blue and played many fun Pete the Cat games. The kindergarteners try to live Pete’s motto of “It’s all good.” On Tuesday, Jan. 29, SES students and staff were thrilled to be entertained by master puppeteer, Bernd Ogrodnik, of Figura Theatre. He travelled all the way from Iceland to share his one-man puppet show, using puppets hand-carved from the wood of the linden tree. Mr. Ogrodnik shared the fable of “Peter and the Wolf” with our elementary students in three separate performances, and he provided a captiving and intriguing show. He explained to the students how each character in the story is represented by a different instrument, and he played the corresponding classical music from his iPod. The students were delighted with the realistic animal noises and the many character voices he created during his performance. The students also enjoyed the audience participation, and a few lucky students were able to help with the puppets at each

performance. We were so fortunate to be entertained by someone with so much expertise and passion for his art, and we hope he can return again soon! The Grade 4/5 Book Club has wrapped up another very successful Used Book Swap and Sale. Running all of last week in the library, this annual event is a wonderful leadership activity for our Book Club members. They organize the books as they are brought in, assist students with choosing and locating books during the event, manage the credits students have earned, and even handle money and make change. The Book Swap offers students the means to trade their old, well-read books from home with other students in our school. The result is that reading takes on a wonderful edge of excitement! Students brought in more than 2,500 gently used books, comics and magazines. After the swapping was done, the remaining books were offered for sale for the reasonable price of 25 cents per book. The Book Club will soon come up with a plan for a school-wide literacy project, utilizing the money they have earned to encourage everyone in the whole school to read, read, read!

STETTLER MIDDLE SCHOOL By Jessica Sweeting and Catrina Bernard Stettler Middle School The new semester is finally upon us and began last Thursday. This means that we will be starting new option classes, report cards will be coming out soon, and parent-teacher interviews will follow. Report cards will be out on Friday, which happens to be the same day our next dance falls on. It will be an evening dance running from 6 to 9 p.m. The parent-teacher interviews will be held on Feb. 13 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Parents are to call in and schedule an interview after receiving the report cards. There was a PD day last Wednesday where all staff enhanced their knowledge in the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. The student union has also been planning a new fundraiser for the month of February, which will be announced soon. Last week, Mr. Teasdale’s Grade 7 science class started designing bridges. They hope their bridges will be able to hold up to 10 kg before giving out. Mr. Peters’ Grade 8 boys gym class

The students in the band class at Stettler Middle School are busy rehearsing their new musical arrangements. has started taking archery classes every Wednesday. Our band program has obtained some new musical arrangements, such as Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and a Green Day compilation piece that they are presently working on in band class.

On Jan. 17, Robb Nash visited our school and there has been a great reaction and discussion between students and staff as a result. He has inspired many of our students to get more involved and help out other students. Most of the students

have had a great response to the presentation and are hoping to have him back. We hope to be able to have him back at our school again to inspire more students and leave a huge impact on the school, as he did a couple of weeks ago. Our next ski trip will be Wednesday, Feb. 12, and we will be leaving partway through the last class of the day and returning to the school before 9:15, so everyone is expected to be

back at the school for 9:15, if not earlier. On Jan. 18, our school hosted a basketball tournament, which was attended by Lacombe, Gateway Christian and St. Francis. Congratulations to the girls’ team, which won every game that day, coming in first place at the tournament. Sadly, the boys’ team had a tough run and came in fourth place, but we’re confident that they will get back on the horse

and keep playing strong. Both the SMS boys’ and girls’ teams beat ChristKing Catholic School on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at home. Both teams are having a very successful year of basketball. The Grade 8 photography option class, taught by Mrs. Ruddell, would like to thank Panda Flowers in Stettler for allowing them to come into the store and take photos of beautiful flower arrangements.

THE STETTLER INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ZONE/COMMUNITY

STETTLER LIBRARY By Crystal Friars Stettler Public Library I know that Stettler is full of readers because I have talked with many of you about books over the years, so we at the library would like to know your favourites. Email me the title of the best book that you read in 2013 at astassistant@prl.ab.ca. Let’s share our recommendations with each other! My favourite book of 2013 was “Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal,” by Mary Roach. It’s a way to take a trip down the digestive tract without being in the Magic School Bus. With chapter titles such as “Dead man’s bloat: and other diverting tales from the history of flatulence research “and “Big gulp: how to survive being swallowed alive,” it is everything that you would ever want in a science book. My recommendation is disgusting, hilarious and enlightening. I recommend this book to anyone who has the stomach for it. Here is some information about our upcoming move into our home at the Stettler Recreation Centre. We’ll begin packing up the downtown location on Wednesday, Feb. 12, and will remain open there until Tuesday, Feb. 18. We will close at the downtown location on Feb. 19, but starting on that day, we will have a desk set up downstairs at the SRC where you can pick up and return books and other items. During that period, Read and Rhyme and Tutoring Tuesdays will continue in one of the upstairs meeting rooms at the SRC. We don’t have an exact date for reopening, but we should be ready in early March. You can stay up-to-date on changes in schedules by reading our column, our website (http://spl.prl.ab.ca) and our Facebook page (Stettler Public Library). Also, if you would like to volunteer to help with the move into our newly renovated space, contact the library at 403-742-2292 to get yourself on our volunteer list. Did you know that you can download magazines onto your tablet or computer with your library membership? Zinio is free, there’s no waiting, and the magazines never have to be returned! More than 100 popular titles, including Canadian Living, Alberta Outdoorsmen, Shape, Hello and The Hockey News are among the titles. Do you reside in the County of Stettler? The Stettler Public Library Board is seeking two new membersat- large. Contact the library at 403-742-2292 for further details. The Stettler Public Library is your community library and we want to know how we are doing. Please fill out our Satisfaction Survey on our webpage (http://spl.prl.ab.ca) and let us know what you think. We are always looking for your input.

WILLIAM E. HAY COMPOSITE HIGH SCHOOL

Doan-Reimer back in Stettler to speak at health conference ROBIN TARNOWETZKI Independent reporter Students at William E. Hay Composite High School plan to attend a health conference this Friday, with the theme of “Wellness.” Dianne Enyedy, student services advisor at William E. Hay, said she got the idea for the conference while attending the guidance-counsellor conference in Banff, where she learned that anxiety and depressive disorders account for 60 per cent of difficulty in work and school, and that those disorders will account for 70 per cent of health costs by 2020. “This was alarming to me,” Enyedy said. “Therefore, I decided I wanted to host a conference for the students, with a theme of wellness, but the underlying current would be around anxiety reduction.” Enyedy also wanted all the presenters to be local, so the students would know where to go if they had problems with anxiety.

The keynote speaker is Leighann Doan-Reimer, a William E. Hay graduate and an accomplished basketball player. She plans to speak about setting goals and how to make decisions to accomplish those goals. Afterward, the students can pick from three 45-minute sessions. Some of the topics the students can choose from are self-defence for girls, yoga, post-secondary institutions, banking and healthy eating. “The sessions came about from thinking of what causes students stress and who in our community can help alleviate that stress,” Enyedy said. The students will enter their names in a draw at each session. The prizes are gift cards from the community, and the biggest prize is a $100 gift card. The school is also putting on a Stress Less Week from Tuesday to Thursday, where students can take advantage of different sessions during their flex class that centre around stress and anxiety reduction. The sessions include pet therapy, dancing, bubble-wrap popping and visualization techniques.

The Stettler Wildcats’ provincial football championship in 2011 remains a source of pride at William E. Hay.

THE STETTLER INDEPENDENT DISTRICT

ENDIANG-BYEMOOR NEWS By Les and Rosemary Stulberg Donnie Johnson, Irene Brooker and Shirley Lumsden entertained with their musical talent at Manor II in Hanna last week. The residents thoroughly enjoyed it. Among those enjoying the music were former Endiang residents Ervin and Ruby Hausher. Ervin used to play in the band with Donnie and Irene when he lived at Endiang. In last week’s crib results at the Endmoor Drop-In Centre, we missed Eileen Smyth’s last name. Sorry about that Eileen — hopefully, most figured it out.

Ruth Ratcliffe enjoyed a visit from her friend Chris Schauers last week. Chris was on her way to Saskatchewan to entertain. We send get-well wishes to Fred Gardner, who had the misfortune of breaking a hip, and to Wilma (nee Hunt) Paetkau, who broke an ankle. Hope you two are on the mend. Gordie and Roxy Gallagher have returned from a two-week vacation in Arizona. They enjoyed spending time with friends in the Mesa area. Judy Buchwitz drove the school bus in Roxy’s absence. Ben and Tania Smyth enjoyed a break from winter with a trip to Cuba.

A good-sized crowd enjoyed the Allen Christie concert in Endiang on Saturday evening. Thanks to Ruth for bringing entertainment to town. Keep in mind the entertainment at the Byemoor Hotel on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. MoJo Williams and Ron Carrothers will provide the country, rhythm and blues, 1950s and 60s rock and roll and classic jazz tunes. Remember the Byemoor Curling Club’s men’s and women’s bonspiel runs from Feb. 24 to March 1. Be sure to get your entries in to Eugene Nixon at 403-579-2460. We send birthday wishes to former resi-

HALKIRK HERALD By Rose Koenraadt and Dorothy Anderson Volunteers are busy at the curling rink this month, putting in the ice and making repairs, all in anticipation of the mens and ladies bonspiels which will be held during the first full week of March. Built in 1952, the new curling rink became the hub of our communities winter entertainment. There were mens, ladies, mixed, teen and family bonspiels plus square draw curling at least four evenings a week. In the mid to late 60’s the Halkirk mens bonspiel had 52 entrees. It was a draw

masters nightmare- 52 rinks on 2 sheets of ice in 7 days- it did take 8 days! Entry fees were raised to $16.00 per rink. There was no bar service, but the community lady volunteers operated the booth from early morning breakfast till the last curler went home. Interest waned, the community aged and floor curling became the new sport of choice. Now the mens and ladies Spiels are held during the same week. The school kids will come out and curl 2 or 3 times and the plant will be shut down until next winter. We encourage our residents to come out

and take part in this great sport. Phone JD at 884-2250 and offer to help, then get your friends together and bring a team to the bonspiel. You can make a difference – lets not let this be the last bonspiel in Halkirk. Get-well wishes go out to Keith Stewart who underwent surgery recently at the foothills hospital in Calgary. Please check your cupboards and see if you are missing roasting pans, there seem to be a few left over in the hall from fall supper. The school kids recently went to rexall place in Edmonton to watch the Brandon Wheat Kings play the

Well it’s been a long time coming but it’s finally here. Big Valley residents may remember that two years ago, the Big Valley Fire Department began raising money for a thermal-imaging camera. As usual, the Fire Department was completely supported by the community. The service groups in this village are awesome with their support, as well as several of our local oil and gas companies, some very generous individuals, and last but not least, memorial donation money. All of those things together have helped the Fire Department raise enough money to purchase the thermal-imagining camera. This tool detects heat so firefighters will be able to locate hot spots faster in the very first stages of a fire and help to find hot spots at the end of the fire. I’s also possible to use it for search and rescue and other applications. It’s just one more tool in their arsenal that will help our Fire Department to serve us all better. A great big thank-you to the

Big Valley community for your continued support. It helps make our firefighters’ tough job a little easier. May we all have a safe and happy new year. Big Valley resident Bob Boswell (left) teamed up with Dennis Ensminger from Ponoka at the Alberta 55 plus Cribbage Challenge Cup held in Stettler on Wednesday, Jan. 29. With 21 teams present from all around Zone 4, this team managed to win 11 of their 12 games played. The next closest team was Walter & Lisa Hawksworth from Mirror with 10 wins. Congratulations. Seventeen people showed up for crib on the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Big Valley Inn. Joanne Murphy and Stan Nattestad tied for first place and decided to split the proceeds between first and second prize. Bill Baird took third prize and Phil Bryant took the booby. Teresa Greig won the regular draw and Raymond McCrindle won the 50/50. After the tournament, the group celebrated Len Shaw’s birthday with Nanaimo bars and drinks all around. Thanks again

Edmonton oilers. Matthew Koenraadt recently returned from a 12 day trip to Tokyo, Japan. Great weather but the streets were very crowded and there was a big language barrier. The grades 1 to 6 Halkirk students went to the Valley hill ski hill last month for a day full of skiing. Coming up: Comedy night with Herb Nixon and seafood supper is being held on Sat Feb 8 thickets available at the snack shack, the drug store or wells furniture. Bingo is on Thursday night in the hall. The Halkirk floor curling bonspiel is on Feb 13 at the senior center.

to all the players for coming out. Hope to see you all next Sunday. Twelve Elks members attended a short January meeting. Three cards of thanks were received from groups they have supported and it’s great to see their assistance is appreciated. The annual Oyster Feed and Past ER meeting will be held in Rumsey on Tuesday, March 25, with Brother Ian Michie organizing. On Tuesday, March 4 and Thursday, March 6, the Grand ER will be attending Halkirk’s and Trenville’s respective meetings. Preparations are underway for the Elks’ entry in Big Valley’s 2014 Centennial/Homecoming Parade and weekend activities coming up this summer. They will also be assisting with the Big Valley Ag. Society’s activities. Entertainment has been booked and Big Valley will certainly be the place to be on the August long weekend. The club draw was scooped by Al Berresford and 200 club recipients were: Maren Helyk, Pat Parkin, Lyle Anderson and Jack Snodgrass.

RUMSEY RECORD By Patty Steen Welcome to February, everyone. I hope it is as mild as parts of January were (with a little snow to cover this horrid ice). The women’s bonspiel starts this Wednesday and concludes this Saturday with a delicious supper at the hall available to everyone in the community. Don’t forget about the oyster supper on Thursday night, as well. I worked the concession with a great bunch of people at the oyster supper during the men’s bonspiel and those oysters were huge — you definitely got your plate full. I had a steak and it was delicious, so there are options for those who don’t like oysters. The Rumsey-Rowley 4-H Beef club will hold its speech night on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the hall,

so if you are interested in hearing about some interesting topics from our fine young men and women of the community, this is a great place to be. I have talked about this before, but just in case you haven’t heard, the Rumsey ag society is bringing a Crop Production Workshop to the Rumsey Hall on Feb. 12, which is next Wednesday. With the difficulties in shipping grain this winter and into the spring, maybe there will be some solutions here. There will be six different guest speakers giving you insight into all aspects of crop production, so be sure to attend. There will be a free lunch during the day, so please call Curt Walker at 403-368-2197 or Curt McNaughton at 403-368-2231 to register. The Morrin Figure Skating

Club is bringing the Chevilles to town again this year. Look for them on March 29, with doors to open at 8 p.m. Contact Jill Holowath at 403368-3733 or Marilou Olsen at 403-772-3768 for tickets. This band knows how to play some great music for dancing, so don’t miss this. Get your tickets early. The Kevin Martin Day is picking up steam as it gets closer. It will be held Friday, March 21, with the curling clinic to follow on Saturday, March 22. Call any ag society member for more information. The mixed doubles curling bonspiel will be starting Thursday, Feb. 20, and finish on Saturday, Feb. 23. Give Jackie and Brooks Watts a call to register your two man/woman team for that.

ERSKINE ENQUIRER By Cheri Neitz Today, the grades 6 and 7 students from Erskine School held an in-house fun curling spiel. The Big Valley basketball teams visit the Erskine teams today after school. All are encouraged to come out and cheer on your team. This Friday, all elementary teachers are gone for the day and will be receiving training for the Daily 5 course to help enhance students’ education.

Family day weekend in Erskine is packed with fun activities for everyone to participate in later this month. Mark on your calendars the Family Day skating party, set for Valentine’s Day and hosted by the Erskine Rec Board. Skating starts at 7 p.m., with barbecued hotdogs, snacks and hot chocolate. It’s a no-charge event and will be a lot of fun for family and kids. Of course, the event is scheduled weather-permitting. Larry M has been

Grandparents Gloria and Stan Diegel joined Tasha and Aaron Cordel at their home to celebrate daughter Jules’ first birthday. Other guests were grandpa Gordie Cordel; aunts and uncles Arden and Deanne and girls; Richelle and Greg and family; Ybiett and family. Wade was at work and had to miss the day. Happy Birthday, Jules! Word has come of the passing of Evelyn Samuel in Calgary, where she resided after moving there several years ago. Evelyn (Kruger) grew up north of Gadsby, where she was born on the family farm. She took her schooling in Gadsby, went to Normal College to get her teaching certificate, taught in many area small schools before marrying Phil Samuel, another local Gadsbyite. They farmed the Kruger family farm for many

years, and both of their sons, David and Murray, attended Gadsby school. Phil and Evelyn moved to Stettler. Evelyn taught school in Erskine for several years before retiring. There will be no funeral services at this time. Evelyn was 90 years of age. Joyce and Bill Hansel had supper guests on Sunday evening — Grant and Judy Musgrove and family. Happy Birthday, Grant, on Monday, Feb. 3. Shocking news with the sudden death of Lila Reynar in Calgary. Lila Stenberg was born in Stettler, in July of 1953, and raised north of Gadsby. The youngest daughter of Willard and Verna Stenberg. Lila took her early schooling in Gadsby, high school in Stettler, and married Chuck Reynar (who passed away in January of this year). They lived in Calgary. Lila suffered a massive heart attack outside her home last Monday. She was 60 years of age. Sincere sympathies to son Evan, sisters Darlene and Vivian and their families, as well as the Quance and McKay families.

BOTHA BOOSTER By Louise Bellair Old Man Winter gave us another hit this week, reminding us he’s not finished with strong winds and colder weather. It was really nice having all that warm weather, but he decided not to give up yet, unfortunately. Groundhog Day happened on the weekend, so who knows what he’ll say. Audrey Hauck had a special day this past Saturday. Sorry I missed it last week. But hopefully you had a great birthday, with lots more to come. Talking about birthdays, Hazel Davidson had a fantastic surprise on her birthday. Their first grandson decided to surprise her that day, by being born. His name is Carson Dean Cowan, son to Dustin and Maranda Cowan, and a little brother to Dustin’s and Maranda first child (their daughter). Congradulations goes out to the parents, sister, grandparents, greatgrandparents and other relatives close to them. What a great birthday present. This coming Monday,

Feb. 10, the Botha School students have special trips planned. They will be starting their skiing trips to the Alliance Ski Hill for their skiing lessons. It sounds like fun. Parents, if you can spare some free time and would like to volunteer, they would love to have you join them. Quilting Day also happens again this coming Monday, starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Botha Senior Centre. All are invited. Wednesday mornings, starting st 10 o’clock, the community invites you to join them at the Senior Centre for a fresh hot cup of coffee and a great visit. Then that same afternoon, starting at 1 p.m., come back to the Senior Centre for a friendly game of carpet bowling. It’s a lot of fun. And every Thursday starting at 1 p.m., everyone is welcome to come out and join Botha for another great game and fantastic excercise by playing floor curling. They would love to see newcomers join them.

Six-year-old Stettler girl cooks up a storm during Dragons’ Den audition ROBIN TARNOWETZKI Independent reporter Six-year-old Mya Prehn made Dragons’ Den history on the weekend. On Saturday, she became the youngest person to ever audition for the show. The Stettler Elementary School student watches Dragons’ Den with her dad, Brian Prehn, every Wednesday. A few months ago, she said that she really wanted to be on the show. And so mom Erin Prehn said, “Well, you have to come up with an idea, first.” They went through several ideas, including a robot that applies makeup. “Unfortunately, neither one of us knew how to build a robot that applies makeup, so then we had to think of something else,” Erin said. After that, Erin noticed that Mya wasn’t eating everything in her lunch. “Then she’s, like, ‘Well, it would be easier if it was fun.’ So then we thought of how we could make it a

game. That’s kind of how we came up with it.” And that’s how Lunch Apeel was born. Each kit comes with a set of stickers with the numbers 1, 2 or 3 on them, and a sheet of paper with a line of apples that lead to a star. For each food item eaten, a sticker goes on the paper: the healthier the item, the higher the number. When the child eats enough food to reach the star, he or she gets a prize. For Mya, the prize could be something like ordering an item from the book order. Mya admitted she was a little nervous to audition, but she would be excited to go on the show. And the producers that

she auditioned for liked her pitch. “They said it was good,” Mya said. But even if she doesn’t make it on the show, the audition was satisfactory, anyway. “Obviously, if we had a chance to go to Toronto, it would be an amazing experience, but it was kind of just the audition itself; we’re 100 per cent satisfied with that,” Erin said. “We had a business, Mya got to go, she got to pitch it, she got to have a daddy-daughter date, so it’s good.” But it might have been Mya’s last foray into business. She plans to be a teacher when she grows up.

Making The Most of Your TFSA Dollars Even though it’s called a “savings” account, a TFSA (Tax-Free Savings Account) is an ideal investment tool because money (including earned interest and proĮts from investments) can grow without the threat of being taxed. Ever. This makes TSFAs a great income vehicle that you should seriously consider using. Here’s why: More Than A Savings Account In a nutshell, a TFSA can hold any combinaƟon of eligible income sources – cash, GICs, mutual funds, bonds, and stocks. You don’t have to pay taxes on any income within the account (including interest, dividends, or capital gains) OR on anything you withdraw from the TFSA. The two caveats to using a TFSA are, 1) contribuƟons are not tax-deducƟble (like RRSPs), and 2) you won’t be compensated for bad investments (ie. no capital loss deducƟons). Choosing the Right TFSA Knowing that TFSAs are used by DIY investors to earn tax-free income, it’s equally important to know where to open a TFSA account because, depending on how you plan to use it, you don’t need to open one at your local bank. For example, if you’re interested in taking a self-directed approach to invesƟng, you need to open a TFSA account with an online broker. Just be sure to shop around for interest rates and fees (annual; withdrawals; transfers; etc). With a self-directed TFSA, you have the potenƟal for turning signiĮcant proĮts by invesƟng your TFSA dollars in higher-risk investments. Why would you want to do this? Because all the proĮt from your investments are tax-free, even if they grow to more than your total contribuƟon room. On the other hand, if you’re a conservaƟve saver, we can open a highinterest TFSA savings account. You might also be surprised to know that our online bank oīers beƩer features and rates than brick-n-mortar banks so don’t ignore this opƟon! Peter can sort through the details and help you make the best choice for your goals. TFSA, RRSP or Both? The right choice depends on diīerent factors, including current/future income and Įnancial goals, to name a few. An RRSP might be a good opƟon when… your current income situaƟon allows you to contribute to an RRSP so that you can enjoy the tax credit now AND you expect to earn less in reƟrement, bumping you down to a lower tax bracket. A TFSA might be a good opƟon when… your current income situaƟon doesn’t need an immediate tax break AND you anƟcipate a higher reƟrement income with liƩle tax relief (don’t want to pay high taxes on withdrawals).

TFSA withdrawals aren’t considered income so in addiƟon to not paying taxes in reƟrement, you won’t experience government clawbacks from GIS or OAS supplements which means you get to keep more of your money. (RRSPs don’t have this safeguard.) AlternaƟvely, you can uƟlize both accounts by using your TFSA and holding oī on RRSP contribuƟons (accumulaƟng room for future use when you’re in a higher tax bracket and need the tax break) OR, you can fund your TFSA with your RRSP tax refund. Transferring To TFSAs Again, because all money in a TFSA account is tax-free, you might want to consider transferring any interest-bearing investments, no maƩer how small. GICs included. This way, future interest can accumulate tax-free. You may also want to consider transferring market-based assets, such as mutual funds or segregated fund contracts, from a non-registered account to a TFSA. And if you’re concerned about losing government beneĮts in reƟrement, you could withdraw from your RRSP during your working years to gradually transfer funds to your TFSA…. but only if the withdrawal fees you incur oīset the impact of reduced reƟrement beneĮts. Remember that if you transfer market-based assetsin-kind to a TFSA, it will trigger a capital gain or capital loss (but any capital loss will be denied). Depending on the severity of loss, there are strategies for knowing how best to handle these kind of transfers. More TFSA BeneĮts Other scenarios to consider for taking full advantage of a TFSA include income spliƫng, saving for educaƟon or a Įrst home, and planning for reƟrement. The rules diīer from those set aside for RRSPs so, consulƟng with a knowledgeable Įnancial planner is prudent. As you can see, the reasons for using TFSAs and RRSPs diīer dramaƟcally. If you’re not conĮdent about making a choice on your own, call us to learn how we can help, 742-6450.

THE ADVANTAGES OF SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL.

In extremely cold weather, synthetic oil is simply better. Originally engineered for military applications, the controlled chemistry and purity of synthetic oil means that it protects your engine the best, when you need it most. Even at incredibly low temperatures, synthetic oil remains viscous, allowing it to immediately flow to and protect the critical components of your engine during the harshness of those cold weather starts. Ask your service advisor about upgrading to Pennzoil® synthetic oil motor oil today... 14021UC0

Oil & Filter Change Changing your vehicle’s oil and filter at regular intervals isn’t just a good idea – it’s a vital part of keeping your vehicle’s engine running properly. Engine oil protects your engine’s moving parts against wear and corrosion; but even the highest quality oils break down over time. Filters too have a limited life expectancy and once fully obstructed they lose their ability to filter contaminants from your engine oil. This combination of degraded, contaminated engine oil and an obstructed filter can directly damage the very components they were originally engineered to protect. 95 ±

The Zone 4 badminton team for this weekend’s Alberta Winter Games includes (back row, from the left) John Langford and Kyle Poapst of Stettler and Bryce Kopec of Red Deer, and (front row, from the left) McKenzie Henderson and Samira Rowland of Ponoka and Cassidy Nichols of Stettler. Missing from the photo are Allyssa Acera of Stettler and Evan Nadon of Red Deer. Six of the eight Zone 4 teammates are members of the Stettler Junior Badminton Club.

Winter Games familiar territory for Stettler duo Langford, Poapst Veterans lead eight-member Zone 4 badminton entry at Canmore JOHN MACNEIL Independent editor Two years ago, Stettler buddies John Langford and Kyle Poapst soaked up the Alberta Winter Games experience as relative rookies with the Zone 4 badminton team. At the time, Poapst was 13 and Langford had just turned 14. They still managed to represent the region well in the under-17 tournament at Spruce Grove and Stony Plain, as Zone 4 (Parkland) took home the Spirit of Sport Award for fair play and sportsmanship. This time around, Langford and Poapst bring experience to Zone 4’s eight-member badminton entry in the Alberta Winter Games, which run Thursday through Sunday at Banff and Canmore. The under-17 badminton tournament begins Friday at Canmore, with individual and team events scheduled. And the Stettler boys are expected to be among the medal contenders. “There’s a lot more expectation this

time,” said Langford, who turned 16 on New Year’s Day. “We’ve been training a lot and making sure we can do our best when we go there. “It’ll be a good-competition tournament. It’s going to be good.” Langford is in tournament mode, after playing in Saskatoon two weekends ago and in the Stettler junior tournament last weekend. At home Sunday, Langford won the under-16 boys’ singles championship and teamed up with Poapst to take the doubles’ title. Poapst was the silver-medallist in the singles’ event. Poapst, who turns 16 next month, remembers going into the last Winter Games with modest expectations. “We were going to have a good time,” he said. Although plenty of fun is still in store, the on-court outlook might be a little different this year. “I guess it’s different,” Poapst said. “We know a lot of the guys we’re going up against. We’ve played against some of them in tournaments, so we’ve got a better

idea of what’s going on.” Langford is designated mainly for singles’ action, while Poapst is slated to play mixed doubles with Stettler clubmate Cassidy Nichols. Also bound for the Winter Games are Allyssa Acera of Stettler and Red Deer’s Bryce Kopec, a former Stettler resident and a current member of the Stettler Junior Badminton Club. They were partners last weekend in the Stettler tournament. Rounding out the Zone 8 badminton contingent are Red Deer’s Evan Nadon, a member of the Stettler club, and Ponoka girls McKenzie Henderson and Samira Rowland. Poapst and Nichols warmed up for the Games last weekend as partners in the Stettler tourney. “We play pretty well together,” said Poapst, a Grade 10 student who juggles badminton with his front-line role with the junior varsity boys’ basketball team at William E. Hay Composite High School. “I played well on the weekend in singles, and I ended up losing to John (Langford),

but no surprise there,” he added with a chuckle. Poapst and his Wildcat basketball teammates host Rocky Mountain House tonight before he boards the Zone 4 bus Thursday for the trip to the Winter Games. “It’s pretty big,” he said. “The opening ceremonies are a good experience. “During the Games, there’s a lot of down time when you meet other athletes. The last time, I met a lot of kids from other zones at badminton. There’s also a lot of volunteers — you thank them every time you see them. “It’s a really good experience. There’s a pool party this year. There’s a dance at the Banff Springs Hotel. Lots of food, so that’s good.” There’s a good chance that Poapst and Langford might partner in the team competition, which pits Zone 4 against Zone 2, the Big Country entry made up mainly of players from the Edison badminton factory in Okotoks. WINTER GAMES BADMINTON . . . Continued from Page B1 “Yes. I will make that happen at some point,” said Zone 4 coach Chris Langford, who is John’s mother. Poapst and Langford would get that opportunity to partner in the team portion of the Winter Games tourney. “The kids play a team event — zone versus zone — during which I will designate the boys’ singles, girls’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles teams,” Chris Langford said. “I designate based upon who I feel our opposing zone team might put in those events. I will probably allow some wild switchups, since all of my boys prefer singles and are fairly equally skilled, and all of the girls prefer doubles or mixed. “In the individual-event portion of the Games, each player has only one designated event — Cass and Kyle are the Zone 4 mixed team, McKenzie and Samira are the girls’ doubles team, Evan and Bryce are the boys’ doubles team and Allyssa and John will be the Zone 4 singles’ players.”

CHAPMAN CATTLE CO. 8 ANNUAL ANGUS BULL SALE

The Games are a family affair for the Langfords. John’s brother, James, a former Winter Games participant, is the male chaperon for the Zone 4 badminton club. “We’re not really too sure about team events yet,” John Langford, a Grade 10 student, said this week. “I’ll probably be in a lot of singles events. For the main tournament draw, I’ll be playing singles.” One day after a three-day tournament in Stettler, Langford and his teammates practised Monday night as the Games countdown began. “It’s going to be fun to go again,” he said. “It’s a pretty big thing. It’s cool. “We’re looking forward to it, because it only happens every two years. It will be my second time going — and my last.” Longtime Stettler junior badminton coach Bruce LaRocque is among the officials at the Winter Games. Along with the badminton contingent, Stettler’s representation at the Games this weekend includes fencer Riley Norman and figure skater Rebecca Harvey.

Obituaries BROWN Dennis Michael (Brownie) Sept. 24, 1954 - Jan. 27, 2014

On Monday January 27, 2014 Dennis passed away in the arms of his daughter Erin and his wife Rose (his Rosie) in Marjorie Willoughby Hospice House. The cancer he had fought defiantly finally won. He is survived by his loving wife Rose, daughter Erin (Chris), his grandson Hunter (the light of his life), Hunter’s dad Bo Tresierra and many good friends. He also leaves behind his mother Irene Brown in Stettler, his brother David Brown in Red Deer, his sisters Jeanette Baum(Ken) in Strathmore and Sandra Sargent (Rodney) in Mirror, his brother in law Alister Wilson (Denise) in Airdrie, father in law Wilbur Wilson (Doris) in Victoria, sisters in law Joanne Edwards in Drumheller, Denise Birch (Winston) in Kuwait along with nieces and nephews Trevor, Raunda, Chris, Rausheen, Meghan, Ryan, Katie, Christopher, Erika and Andrea, Carmen and chosen nephew Mark Boice of Stettler along with their children. He is predeceased by his father Newton Brown, mother in law Molly Wilson, nephew Richard Sargent and good friends Phil Boice and David Kastic. Dennis was born and raised in Stettler, Alberta, lived in Edmonton, then Millet and then in Leduc for nine years and moved to Kamloops with Rose and Erin in 1988. He enjoyed working as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic and was known as a hard worker with a laid back personality. He had an engaging smile and a wicked sense of humour. Dennis liked to “fix” things and do renovations to his home and Erin’s home. He was devastated when he no longer had the energy to do so. He loved to take Hunter to public skating to “skate like the wind” and over the past few years enjoyed many happy hours either in his boat or relaxing at Agate Bay on Adams Lake. He liked to golf; particularly in Maui with his good friend Leni. As he started to enjoy travel over the past 20 years he has been to Mexico nine times, Maui four times, Ireland, Egypt and Kuwait. He had a “bucket list” of places he wanted to explore in his retirement and Heaven wasn’t on it. If there is a happy hunting ground he is there with his buddies Phil and Dave, terrorizing the wildlife and enjoying a good laugh. The family would like to thank all of our friends for their understanding and support and Dr. Wiltshire and Laurie for the wonderful and personal care and to the amazing staff at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice Home for their support during the last week of Dennis’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dennis’s name to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice Home, 72 Whiteshield Crescent S., Kamloops BC V2E 2S9. Phone: 250-372-1336. A celebration of Dennis’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on February 8, 2014 at the South Thompson Inn in Kamloops. In honour of his unique sense of style, please dress casually.

He enjoyed comparing cars with his neighbor Verne when he wasn’t tinkering on his beloved 61 Comet wagon or some project he always had on the go. Rob was a decorated Boy Scout member and leader. Later he received the Duke of Edinburgh Award for volunteerism and community service. He enjoyed studying the bible, volunteering, music, antiques, sketching cars, building models of all kinds, and cruising in his mustang. He was a beautiful pianist and artist. He loved spending time in his grandpa’s recliner with his dogs by his side and his cat on his lap and a good cup of coffee. He attended many car and antique shows with his son, Dad and Uncle Max. He studied sheet metal mechanics and graduated a journeyman from SAIT. He spent the last 11 years with Hawk Custom Sheet Metal in Red Deer. Ever the adventurer, Rob created many things out of sheet metal, including a sluice box to collect gold dust from Central Albertan rivers. “Coop” was always laughing, joking around and loved a good prank. A Memorial Service will be held at Eventide Funeral Chapel, 4820-45 Street, Red Deer on Saturday, February 8th, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at a later date. Donations in lieu of flowers may be left in his memory to a homeless charity of choice. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.eventidefuneralchapels.com. Obituaries REYNAR Lila June July 27, 1953 -Jan. 27, 2014 Lila Reynar (Stenberg) went to be with her Lord and Saviour on January 27, 2014 at the age of 60 years due to complications from COPD.

Lila spent her early years at Gadsby and Stettler. She was raised on a farm and always cherished her rural background. After graduating from school, she met her husband Chuck while employed at the Royal Bank in Stettler, and the two were married on July 7, 1973. Lila spent the major part of her career working with accounting firms in Edmonton and always loved “playing” with numbers. She had a flair for art and was known for her fabulous Jambalaya. Being an oilfield wife, she lived in many Alberta centers, as well as Broken Arrow, OK for several years. Lila was a woman of faith and devoted her life in later years to her Church, her family, friends, and visiting the elderly. Lila was predeceased by her husband, Charles (Chuck) on Jan. 7, 2014 just prior to her passing. She is survived by their loving son, Evan; sisters Darlene Tracy and Vivian Holtby (Russell); brothers-in-law Syd Reynar (Gert) and Tom Reynar (Jacquie); sisters-in-law Linda Chupka (Michael) and Pat Reynar; step-brothers Ken (Lee Ann) and Terry (Gwen) Stenberg, step-sister-in-law Liduina; and step-sister Gloria McCauley (John) along with numerous nephews, nieces and friends. SAMUEL (KRUGER) Evelyn Dorothy Samuel passed away January 27th, 2014 at the age of ninety. She was born at home on a farm five miles north of Gadsby, Alberta, to Albert and Elizabeth (Nuhn) Kruger. The oldest pictures of her on the farm show her holding a cat, and she kept a cat until her very last days. After school in Gadsby she attended Normal school and obtained a certificate in Education at the University of Alberta. After graduating she taught at several small country schools of the “little red school house” type, including Halkirk and De Winton, an experience which she greatly enjoyed. In 1948 she married Phillip Samuel and they returned to farm on the original Kruger homestead where she was born. When her children were older, she returned to teaching at Gadsby School. Later, after moving to nearby Stettler, she taught for several years at Erskine. Evelyn’s teaching life was extremely important to her. She maintained friendships with many ex-colleagues and students over the years. Evelyn was particularly welcoming to younger teachers in the profession. Evelyn was predeceased by her brother Jim, husband Phillip Samuel, and second husband, Peter Van Buggenum. She is survived by sons David Samuel (Patty) and Murray Samuel (Jane), brother-in-law William Hayden Samuel, and her grandchildren, Lewis, Lindsay, Elena, Catherine and Alison. There will be a memorial gathering announced and will take place during the summer of 2014 at the Gadsby Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy and in loving memory of Evelyn, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in care of BRENNEN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES P.O. Box 193 Stettler, Alberta TOC 2LO who have been entrusted with the care and arrangements. 403.742.3315 Condolences can be forwarded to the family by visiting our website at www.brennenfuneralhome.com.

In Memoriam In loving Memory of Our Husband, Dad and Papa

Mickey (Milton) Johnson who passed away February 7th, 2001 I’m just a farmer plain and simple: I’m just a farmer plain and simple, Not of royal birth, but rather a worker of the earth. I know not of riches, but rather of patches on my britches. I’m just a farmer plain and simple, I know of drought and rain, of pleasure and plain. I know the good, the bad, the happy and the sad. I’m a man of emotions. A man who loves this land and the beauty of its sand. I’m just a farmer plain and simple, I know the spring’s fresh flow and autumn’s golden glow. Of a newborn calf’s hesitation and an eagle’s destination. I’m just a farmer plain and simple, I know of tall pines and long waiting lines. I know the warmth of campfires and the agony of flat tires. I’m just a farmer plain and simple, I’m a man who loves his job and the life that I live. I’m just a farmer plain and simple, And I’m a reaper of harvest, I’m the sower of seeds and I’m the tender of stock. I’m just a farmer plain and simple, I know of planting corn and bailing hay and animals going astray. I live in a complex world, but my faith guides me. I’m just a farmer plain and simple, I am a man who works for God. I cannot succeed without His help. For you see, I’m just a farmer plain and simple, Thinking of you every day with much love, Your family

Painting art that comes straight from the heart L ORI WELBOURNE Independent columnist

The day my daughter Daisy was born, her three-year-old brother Sam held her in his arms. The day Daisy’s friend Kylee was born, her three-year-old sister Kayla could not do the same. Kylee was born with a life-threatening condition called transposition of the great arteries and had to be flown to B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver for emergency open heart surgery. Once the major operation was a success, she was in Kayla’s arms all the time. Despite such a terrifying and traumatic introduction to the world, Kylee is now 10 years old and is as happy and healthy as any parent could ever hope. Grateful to the medical team for saving her life, she and her older sister raised money for the BC Children’s Hospital three years ago by selling stones they hand-painted while camping. Since then, they’ve sold over a thousand beautifully decorated rocks at campgrounds, in their neighbourhood, at craft fairs and even art shows. This Valentine’s Day, they’ll be setting up their “Charity Rocks” table and selling their hearts out at the Kelowna General Hospital to raise money for its new Interior Heart and Surgical Centre. “They’ve supported a variety of charities over the years,” their mother said. “And they’ve always insisted on donating 100% of the proceeds. They won’t even let me use a small portion for supplies.” When asked who their idol is, their answer isn’t a recognizable celebrity we might see in the tabloids, such as Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift. Their idol is Spencer West, a Toronto man who has no legs, yet has ac-

complished incredible feats such as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro on his hands to raise money for Free the Children, a charity that builds schools and water systems for kids in third world countries. An author and motivational speaker, Spencer West has presented at the youth empowerment event “We Day” for years, and that’s where the sisters first saw him. For three years in a row they have listened to him share inspiring life lessons, and were thrilled to meet him in person when they participated in a fundraising hike up Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver last summer. They believe, like he does, that anyone can overcome their obstacles and become a force for positive change in the world. For them, their biggest obstacle might be their exceedingly shy personalities, which has caused them to miss out on opportunities reserved for the more extroverted students at school. But whenever they have the opportunity to raise money for charity, they have no problem coming out of their shells temporarily — proving the theory that introverts should never be underestimated. “Painting is fun,” Kylee said. “But talking to people and selling the rocks is our favourite part.” Driven to help those in need, the artistic duo plan to continue giving back in some form or another, fully committed to helping others while not limiting themselves. The girls don’t place a set price on their waterproofed creations, but they gladly accept donations. They also take custom orders and are excited about their expanding clientele. “The more we raise, the more we donate,” Kayla said. “As we get older and gain experience, we plan to help to a greater extent.” With loving hearts as big as theirs, I have no doubt these talented sisters will.
