A local teenager facing charges related to spray paint “tagging” has been arrested for drug dealing. The 17-year-old, who cannot be named, was arrested last Friday in Robron Park. According to Crown prosecutor Bruce Goddard, Mounties found the youth with three baggies containing 7.3 grams of white powder that “field tested positive” for either MDMA or ecstasy. Officers also found 10 tablets of Tylenol 3 which contain codeine. The youth and his girlfriend, noted Goddard, were both “verbally aggressive” towards the arresting officers. The boy was held in the RCMP detachment over the weekend and appeared in Campbell River provincial court on Monday afternoon. As of Monday, he had not been charged with drug trafficking, but he is charged with breaching his curfew on Jan. 14. On that night, police were conducting a curfew check and the youth was not found at home. He’s on a curfew due to a bail order stemming from two charges of Continued on Pg. 2

According to defence lawyer James Hormoth, the arrest of the youth last Friday was a “heavyhanded police takedown.” Hormoth also suggested there may be no forthcoming trafficking charges. The youth was released into his mother’s care. He was ordered to have no spray paint or tagging items, and no weapons. He also cannot have any contact with his girlfriend.

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
When the undercover cops went looking for drug dealers, they weren’t expecting to be propositioned. “The officers were a little surprised,” said federal Crown prosecutor Paul Corbett. The two plain clothes officers in an unmarked car were driving through Campbellton last Nov. 2, when the prostitute offered her services. The officers declined, but told her they “needed to get some powder.” She took them to Robert Hodder’s residence, a drug house already known to officers. They suspected Hodder, 28, would recognize their unmarked police car. As well, a video security camera was set up outside the front door. S o t he Mou nt i e s secured the residence,
fearing any drugs would be flushed down the toilet. Inside they found Hodder, along some cocaine, a shotgun and ammunition hidden under a pillow. The officers returned with a search warrant and seized almost 11 grams of cocaine. Hodder was arrested and later released, but police quickly learned he was back in business. On Nov. 20, 18 days after the first bust, police arrived with another search warrant and noted a new security camera. This time they seized .4 grams of cocaine along with several bags of marijuana totally 38.5 ounces, and five cell phones. They also found .22 calibre rifle shells hidden in the seat of a reclining chair. Hodder was arrested again and this time held in custody.
On Jan. 20, he appeared by video in Campbell River provincial court and entered guilty pleas on charges of two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a firearm contrary to a court order, possession of ammunition while prohibited, three counts of breaching a court order, and assault causing bodily harm. The assault resulted from an incident on Aug. 20, 2013, at Discovery Pier. Hodder confronted another man over a missing trailer and demanded $500. When the man said he wouldn’t pay, Hodder “sucker punched” him in the face. The assault damaged the man’s cheek and orbital bones, requiring two surgeries to repair. Hodder was born in Calgary and raised in Campbell River. By
age 15 he was regularly using cocaine, but then stopped for most of his 20s as he worked as a commercial fisherman and construction framer. According to his lawyer, Hodder relapsed after finding out his mother had cancer and is remorseful for his actions. As part of his sentence, Hodder agreed to take any drug counselling through probation services. Judge Brian Saunderson accepted a joint submission from the Crown and defence for a jail term amounting to 14 new months, followed by 18 months probation. Hodder is bound by a lifetime firearms ban and must submit a DNA sample. He is also to have no contact with his assault victim. Hodder’s common-law partner, Keilah HansonFord, was also charged (see story below).
Good girl jailed four months for dealing She was a former straight-A student and role model for other youth, and now she’s in jail for drug dealing. Keilah Hanson-Ford, 20, received a fourmonth jail sentence on Monday in provincial after pleading guilty to trafficking cocaine. She also pleaded guilty to obstruction, careless storage of a firearm and two counts of breaching a court order. Judge Douglas Cowling was told Hanson-Ford is engaged to Robert Hodder. The two were living in a common-law relationship when RCMP busted their home twice. After the second bust, Hodder was held in custody while Hanson-Ford was freed on strict bail
conditions. However, when she failed to report to her bail supervisor on Nov. 26, a warrant was issued for her arrest. On Dec. 11, Mounties received a tip about a dial-a-dope operation and arranged to buy cocaine from HansonFord. A fake WD40 can was found in her vehicle. It had a hidden compartment containing two “spitballs” of cocaine amounting to 1.2 grams. She was also found with $805 in cash and a cell phone which violated terms of her bail. At the RCMP detachment Hanson-Ford was about to be searched by a female officer when she popped a pink balloon into her mouth. Officers

Hydro project gears up About 15 workers are widening Surge Tower Road in preparation of a big tunnelling operation that will begin the John Hart Generating Station Replacement Project. That workforce will balloon to nearly 200 people by year’s end and to 340 by 2016, as BC Hydro ramps up the $1 billion project. “We’re pretty excited about the next steps,” said hydro spokesman Stephen Watson. In November, B C Hydro announced SNCLavalin as the winning bidder. The final contract is expected to be signed in February with tunnel-
ling to begin by the end of April. Currently, water from the John Hart Lake reservoir flows down General Hill in three large woodstave pipelines that connect with the generating station on the Campbell River. The plan is to remove the pipelines and replace them with an 8.1-metre diameter tunnel that goes through granite, thereby providing excellent seismic stability. As well, the entire generating station is going underground too which will result in the removal of the old concrete station. “It will be like a mining
operation to drill and control blast the rock, and then remove it. The building stage will start later on,” said Watson. With the influx of workers, accommodation will be in demand. C ont r ar y to s om e rumours, there will be no work camp. Watson said it will be up to each worker to find their own place to live whether their contract lasts a few months or a couple years. There will be a business event in the city in March. BC Hydro, SNC-Lavalin, the Campbell River Chamber of Commerce, the Vancouver Island Construc-

Buyers wants to turn pub into law office Kristen Douglas CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Council was divided Tuesday on whether to accommodate new business or respect the community’s wishes after being presented with an application to convert the Willows Neighbourhood Pub into office
space. Applicant Kevin Mills told council that a limited number company intends to purchase the building, which includes a pub and a liquor store, and lease it to a law brokerage company which would convert the pub into offices. “We have been search-
ing for a suitable office location and this seems to be a logical solution to both the buyer and the seller,” Mills told city council at its meeting Tuesday evening. “The land and building have been on the market for some time now and there have been no offers to continue the pub as is.”

Directors uneasy about Tides connection
www.CampbellRiverMirror.com www.CampbellRivermirror.com

A youth program on Cortes Island will get its grant money after all, despite objections from one regional district director that the money has to filter down through a controversial organization. Directors approved a $2,500 grant-in-aid for Reel Youth, which helps youth produce short films, even though the money will have to be granted to the Tides Canada organization – something directors originally disagreed with.
At its board meeting meeting Jan. 8, directors agreed to write the cheque out to Reel Youth, instead of Tides Canada, after Area D Director Brenda Leigh objected to sending money to Tides. However, Cortes Director Noba Anderson told the board at a meeting last Thursday that Reel Youth, not being a registered charity, cannot accept a grant in its name, and the money had to come via Tides Canada which gathers donations for groups that can’t accept them because they don’t have charitable status.
Anderson, not wanting Reel Youth to miss out on funding, appealed to her directors in a letter to reconsider. “Director Leigh has raised concerns about Tides Canada over the years, concerned that they are under investigation, contribute to political campaigns, receive U.S. funds, etc.,” Anderson said. “I would very much like to put these allegations to bed – or at least into context so that we can all move on and not have this conversation whenever their name comes up at the board.”
Anderson then offered a letter to directors from Tides Canada in which Margaret Dickson, director of Tides Canada, defended allegations that Tides Canada has helped contribute to Vision Vancouver and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson’s election campaign. “C an a d a R e ve nu e Agency has clear guidelines on allowable advocacy (or political activities) conducted by Canadian charities which Tides Canada respects and works well within,” Dickson wrote. “Political activity carried out by Tides Canada is well

help the owner. “We have a letter from Mrs. Thulin (owner of the Willows),” Samson said. “They’ve tried to sell the property and make a go of it. (This) is the best way to recycle this building. To have a building that sits there empty is not what we want to see. There are situations where we have to make changes and we do have to allow certain zonings.” Mayor Walter Jakeway, who said the sale is supposed to close by the end of the month, also tried to help out the owner. “To tie the owner down – once it’s a pub, it’s always a pub – is amazing,” Jakeway said. “In this case we’re saying ‘it’s stuck’ and we’ve got to unstick it somehow and hopefully we can expedite this.” Coun. Andy Adams, seeing at least 12 e-mails to the city from neighbours opposed to turning the pub into offices, made a motion to pass first and second reading of the re-zoning application in order to forward the issue to a public hearing. “I am neither for or against this zoning
amendment, I want to make that perfectly clear,” Adams said. “But consistently with any OCP (official community plan) amendment or zoning amendment, council has been consistent in letting the public have their voice and so proceeding to a public hearing enables that.” Coun. Claire Moglove, said she couldn’t support changing the official community plan, which the community put so many hours into creating, in order to accommodate a use that’s not accepted by the plan. “I see the OCP as more than a guideline, it’s the community’s expression of what the community wants to see,” Moglove said. “This application is a significant deviation from the OCP in that the intended use does not serve the neighbourhood. Having said that, I think it’s important for the neighbourhood to express their views, so I’ll support first and second reading to see this out.” Council in the end, voted in favour of passing first and second reading and sending the issue to a public hearing. Mills, meanwhile, said

below allowable levels.” Vivian Krause, a blogger from North Vancouver, questions that. She has revealed on her blog that $8.7 million was granted from the Endswell Foundation to Tides Canada, which
then distributed that money to investment companies and publicrelations firms that have made political contributions to Vision Vancouver. Krause has also exposed several foreign donations, particularly from the U.S., to Tides Canada which turns the money over to lobby groups against forestry and oil sands and other environmental development which critics say is political, not charitable. Tides Canada has also been in the spotlight because of a recent audit by Revenue Canada. Tides Canada defended that too. “Like numerous Canadian charities, we are in the process of a routine
audit by the Canada Revenue Agency,” Dickson wrote. “We are confident of a positive outcome.” But that didn’t satisfy Leigh who stood her ground. “All the background information still points to Tides (having an) annual revenue of $24 million and I find it very strange that a local government would provide $2,500 of taxpayers’ money to an organization that has $24 million,” Leigh said. Still, despite Leigh’s objections, the board voted in favour of sthe $2,500 grant-in-aid to Tides Canada to pass on to Reel Youth. Directors Leigh and Gerald Whalley were opposed.

accommodate eight to nine vehicles for its eight employees. City staff, however, disagreed that the Willows Pub is a suitable spot. Chris Osborne, city planner, told council in a report that offices would be contradictory to the Official Community Plan, which dictates that the land the pub currently sits on must be used for community use. Osborne recommended council oppose the application to re-zone the property to allow office space. “Offices are not a suitable use to be woven into residential areas and do nothing to contribute to a sense of neighbourhood and place, as they do not ‘serve’ the surrounding area,” Osborne wrote. “To permit such a use at this site may set an undesirable precedent leading to further loss of other valued community facilities.” Coun. Larry Samson, however, suggested the official community plan could be changed (a process that would take two to three months) to accommodate the rezoning application to accommodate offices, to

Kerr objects to ‘joke’ design Kristen Douglas CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Council will allow another storage facility to be built at Campbell River Common mall despite strong objections from one councillor who said the design plans are “a joke.” The owner of the mall, Allan Edie, was given permission by council Jan. 21 to build a second stand-alone storage facility in the parking lot behind the mall along 16th Avenue. Edie intends to build a 15,000 square foot building identical in appearance to the outdoor storage facility that was built in 2011. Edie’s company, Indoor Storage Solutions, stores boats, RVs, and other vehicles just outside and in back of the mall. Edie said despite his proximity to Nunns Creek Park, his facility is environmentally sound. “We’re not in the riparian zone, the riparian zone has been identified as being across from our site on 16th Avenue,” Edie said. “We haven’t had any spills (and) there’s a regular grade back to our site from the
periphery of our building so any spills would come back to the drainage on our site.” Coun. Larry Samson was satisfied Edie’s business was not negatively impacting Nunns Creek Park and praised Edie for his work in beautifying the area. Edie acknowledged that he’s pulled several grocery carts, old batteries, drug paraphernalia, and even an old microwave out of the bushes bordering the park and his property. “I think we’ve definitely seen a revitalization in that particular area with these buildings going on, so I think it’s a good thing,” Samson said. But not ever yone thought so. Coun. Ron Kerr, who has the Campbellton improvement portfolio, said he was not in favour of Edie’s storage building in 2011 and that hasn’t changed. “The negative impact of this large steel barn looming over the sidewalk (on 16th Avenue) will impact the neighbourhood now and into the future,” Kerr said. “Existing buildings in the area have large setbacks from the street and this

has little or none. The landscape screening, the landscape plan and scheme, is a joke compared to other recent developments in Campbell River. There’s no screening here. There’s better screening on the downtown homeless shelter and it’s only temporary.” Coun. Samson said he took “exception to part of the comments” and said he believes the facility “fits well for that area.” According to city staff, Edie plans to plant a 15’ by 120’ strip of Leylandii cypress, Pieris Japonica, and a mix of rhododendrons along the western side of 16th Avenue. “Leylandii would be planted in three sections, which would provide significant screening of the site but without presenting a solid barrier,” wrote Chris Osborne, city planner, in a report to council. “The landscaping proposed would be sufficient to offer significant screening of the site and a visual improvement to 16th Avenue.” That seemed to satisfy council, which voted in favour of allowing Edie to build his storage unit. Coun. Kerr was opposed.

rom the day we printed our very first paper — back in 1971, The Campbell River Mirror has reported on events, stories and legends. We have followed stories from the spectacular to the every day, we’ve printed it all: fires, accidents, political plans, the public’s questions, businesses on their way up and local careers on their way down, the hottest days of summer and storms of winter. We’ve followed crimes and punishments, performances and players, our hometown teams’ victories, Canadian news and provincial views. We’ve celebrated community underdogs who’ve won and mourned lost loved ones. After more than 40 years we’re still doing our very best to be Campbell River’s newspaper. Your newspaper.

Keep e-cigs out of kids’ hands
A new product has hit store shelves with the potential to do great harm. Electronic nicotine-free cigarette-style vaporizers are designed to give smokers the pleasure and feeling of smoking a cigarette, without the nicotine and carcinogenic smoke. Indeed, for many, these products We say: Laws may be useful in helping them to quit need to change smoking by providing a healthier to restrict sale of substitute. But since the product doesn’t contain these to adults nicotine and smoke, it is currently unregulated, and legal to sell to minors. This is problematic, because while e-cigarettes may be nicotine- and smoke-free, their use by children
normalizes and glamourizes tobacco, and could encourage them to take up smoking real cigarettes. Many electronic cigarettes come in fruity flavours, which seem to be geared specifically for children. In 2010, Health Canada made it illegal for retailers to sell tobacco products flavoured with vanilla, banana, cherry, or other taste sensations that may appeal to children. No restriction applies to e-cigarettes, however. And it doesn’t make sense to expect shop owners to take it upon themselves to restrict the sale of a legal product out of some moral duty we may think they should have to the community. They are in business to do business, and will operate within the bounds of the law.
Which is why the laws need to change, with the sale of these products restricted to adults only. Some jurisdictions are already placing restrictions on their use. Nova Scotia’s health ministry recently proposed banning e-cigarettes from bars and restaurants, whether the devices contain nicotine or not. This week, Fraser Health chief medical health officer Paul Van Buynder suggested non-nicotine flavoured e-cigarette vaporizers could be a gateway to smoking tobacco, and thus should be restricted. It’s time the provincial government caught up to this new technology, and ensure it stays out of the hands of children. – Black Press

$500,000 granite sidewalks? Congratulations to city council and its staff for finding idiotic ways to uselessly spend our tax dollars each year so that they have excuses to increase taxes again the next year. Council and its staff obviously live in their own little world and have no clue about their city and its citizens. How can they honestly or even dishonestly justify spending $400,000 - $500,000 in granite alone into the sidewalks downtown? Is this “beautification?” The only way they could think of spending our taxes after raising them 13 per cent? Can’t have a surplus in the budget after raising taxes that much, it might look bad, so they better make the money go away so that they can raise them some more again this year. Do they think a town of blue collar workers and retirees really care about walking on some fancy rock, or are they placing it for the new building that they gave a five-year tax break to? Maybe the taxpayers could use that money to try support their families and pay some of the other bills that keep going up as well. There are a lot of other services that could use some funding instead. I guess the citizens need a lawyer (any volunteers?) to sue the city for stealing from us, and then insulting us by making us walk on our tax dollars. Maybe the mayor should be given the power to fire every last one of them and start from scratch, instead of council being able to kick the mayor out of meetings for voicing opinions of the people that voted them in. Will innovative agreements save our wildlife?
Alistair Taylor
Out On A Limb @AlstrT
editor@campbellrivermirror.com
Wildlife viewing has always been something I’ve treasured. My favourite wildlife encounters have been at Glacier National Park in Montana and Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. I find it kind of ironic that my best wildlife viewing has been in two lower 48 parks. I wanted them to be in Canada but really, seeing wolves, grizzlies, moose and elk from mere metres away is pretty thrilling and the best opportunities I’ve had for that experience was in those two U.S. parks. Our wildlife spotting in Banff and Jasper parks has been limited to elk in the towns. At least in our visit to Kootenay National Park in B.C. last summer, we did go on a ranger-led interpretive walk
looking for wolf sign. We saw scat and depressed grass where the big canids had bedded down, as well as chewed up bones. It was great. We didn’t see the actual animals themselves and we weren’t expecting to, we were just looking for sign. Spotting wolves is a fairly rare occurrence. The best wildlife viewing I’ve seen on Vancouver Island involved being out on the water and spotting orca and dolphins, although seeing a cougar walking along the beach was exciting. Seeing the animals in the wild takes a lot of effort and often requires being up at very early hours of the morning, like when my son and I got up before dawn and went wolf spotting at Yellowstone about eight years ago. It was worth it
though. We watched a family of wolves take a break on a hillside after a morning of hunting, I presume. They lollygagged for an hour or so, occasionally howling to the excitement of a band of watching humans on the other side of the river. But you don’t always have to get out of the house. A trend I’m enjoying these days is the installation of trail cameras and “camera traps” where planted cameras are triggered by movement or fire off at regular intervals. A lot of both Canadian and American national parks are using them and the results are great. You often see a parade of animals passing a fixed camera. A website I’ve discovered lately uses remote video cameras to monitor the African bush. Visit Africam.com to see
the iconic animals of Africa from the comfort of your computer terminal. Of course, it’s not as good as being there but it’s still kind of fun. Lions and other “star attractions” have been seen but not by me, yet. I did see a family of elephants stop by a watering hole to drink and hippos splashing around in a pond. With wildlife habitat under siege on this planet, it’s good to remind people that these animals are out there and this is the sort of thing we stand to lose if we don’t manage our wild spaces better. There are some innovative land-use agreements that have been negotiated in recent years at the national and provincial level that commit parties to sharing resources and land use values. Hopefully they’ll net the results we need.

Dispatches from the frontlines of media The Museum at Campbell River will present the first in a series of lectures by the 2014 Haig-Brown Writer in Residence, Andrew Nikiforuk. On Saturday, Feb. 8, from 1-3 p.m. Nikiforuk will speak to the subject Reflections On The Incredible Shrinking Media. Nikiforuk is the author of five books and has written for most of the nation’s top publications. Over the last 30 years, the journalist has watched his trade decline
as fast as the importance of the middle class. He’ll talk about what the loss of good journalism means for civil society, the triumph of social engineering and how the Internet has complicated things. This talk will introduce Nikiforuk to the community and will provide an overview of his work and interests. For more than two decades Nikiforuk has written about energy, economics and the West for a variety of Canadian publications including
the Walrus, Maclean’s, Canadian Business, The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business, Chatelaine, Georgia Straight, Equinox and Harrowsmith. Nikiforuk’s journalism has won seven National Magazine Awards since 1989 and top honours for investigative writing from the Association of Canadian Journalists. The cost for the lecture is $6. To reserve a seat, call the Museum at 250287-3103. Future lectures are posted at www.crmuseum.ca.

DEAN, Gordon Harry
November 30, 1929 – January 21, 2014 DEAN, Gordon Harry, born November 30, 1929 in Stratford, Ontario, and passed away January 21, 2014 in Cumberland, BC. Our Dad had one wish, to die at home, and he got that! Our mom, Bernice Dean, was there beside him, as were a number of other family members. Dad will no doubt join his parents (Grandma and Grandpa Dean) brother and sister Ted Dean and Ede Shea, also his oldest son Bruce Edward (Ted) Dean who predeceased him. Dad was a millwright starting out in Ocean Falls, BC (where he met and married Mom and had five of their six kids) transferring to the Campbell River Mill after the Ocean Falls one closed down. Dad loved all things outdoors, and all things involving family. Mom and Dad’s 60th wedding anniversary is this February, something he was very excited to celebrate. You will forever live in our hearts; DAUGHTERS Linda Dunkley (partner David Kearney) Pattie Dean (partner Stacey Snider) Diane McCormick (husband David McCormick) and Nancy Dean SONS Bruce (Ted) Dean (wife Sharon Dean), Moses Dean BROTHER Ken Dean (wife Jan Dean)
April 29, 1924 – January 26, 2014 Paul passed away peacefully on January 26, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband of Elisabeth for 62 years. He will live in the loving memories of his children Eric (Teresa), Greg (Edna Lansdowne), Monica, Lucy (Bruce Malone), Liz (Scott Creyke), Gilbert (Ann), Rita (Tony Vanbergen) and Barb (Mike Hanna); his 21 grandchildren and his 11 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Willem Prinsloo and to Fr. Jan Grotkowski. The family is so very thankful to the wonderful caregivers at Evergreen Seniors Home, especially Joanie and Karen for the Home Care they provided, and to Jaime and Tammy for their tenderness in Dad’s final hours. A Prayer Service will be held at Saint Patrick’s Church, 34 South Alder Street, Campbell River on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 1pm, also at Saint Patrick’s Church, followed by private cremation.

Bradley John Pelletier December 17, 1957 – January 5, 2014 It is with deep sorrow that our family announces the passing of Bradley John Pelletier. After several months at Victoria General Hospital, fighting many complications following surgery, he succumbed at the young age of 56 surrounded by family and friends. Brad was born and grew up in Campbell River and lived there for the better part of his life. He had a big heart and could often be found lending a hand to a friend. Brad was an avid outdoorsman and a great fisherman. He also had a passion for cooking, creating recipes, and concocting his own smoked spices. He was a creative soul and enjoyed many hobbies that enabled him to work with his hands. His sense of humor was endless. His work life encompassed many spheres and took him to Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatchewan, and the North. His most loved work was mixing metal alloys for Alcan, log salvaging on the Fraser River, as well as working on the tugs. His later years in Campbell River were spent truck driving, road building, and working as a maintenance and handyman.

God saw you getting tired When a cure was not to be. So He closed His arms around you an whispered “Come to me. You didn’t deserve what you went through, So he gave you rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. And when we saw you sleeping so peaceful and free from pain, We could not wish you back To suffer that again. It broke our hearts to lose you but you didn’t go alone. For a part of us went with you The day God called you home.
Forever in our hearts. Wendy, Amanda, Stuart, Olivia, Gracie, Evan Bruce, Aaron and Jenn

Throwing their weight around Carihi hosted a wrestling tournament last weekend which attracted more than 200 wrestlers from all across the Island and the Lower Mainland. The event featured wrestlers from kindergarten all the way up to Grade 12. Pictured clockwise from left: Scott Assu (in blue), Gr. 5 from Ripple Rock, grapples in the elementary division. Conlan Foy from Timberline takes down his opponent en route to a first place finish in the senior division. Storm goalie to play on U.S. team The Campbell River Storm is pleased to announce goaltender Jack Surgenor of Comox has committed to play for the University of Central Oklahoma for the 2014/2015 season. “Jack has been an integral part of our program both on and off the ice with his character, work ethic and talent,” says Lee
Stone, Storm head coach and director of hockey operations. “There is no doubt this commitment will inspire Jack to become an even (better) goaltender down the stretch for us and a future great Broncho.” The University of Central Oklahoma is a Div I school in the American Collegiate Hockey
Association, located in Edmond, Oklahoma. The Bronchos play in the Western Collegiate Hockey League division, against such schools as Arizona State University and University of Oklahoma. The school enrols nearly 18,000 students. University of Central Oklahoma Head Coach Craig McAllister says
Surgenor will be a great addition to the Bronchos. “UCO is very fortunate to sign a goaltender of Jack’s ability and character,” McAllister says. “We feel that Jack has talent to become a premier goaltender in our league and allow us to challenge for the ACHA National Championship.” Currently, Surgenor
sits at or near the top in several of the goaltending statistics in the VIJHL, including 17 wins (second), 2.29 GAA (third), a .922 save percentage (second) and six shutouts (tied for first). Surgenor will look to continue his dominance of the VIJHL this Saturday as the Storm travel to Kerry Park to take on the Islanders.
ALL ABOUT BOWLING ATTENTION: SHIFT AND CAMP WORKERS!!!
2X6 ALL ABOUT BOWLING
There are many people who live in Campbell River, that either work shift locally, in camp situations or work out of town in places like the oil sands projects etc. A number have asked me how they can still bowl in competition when they’re not available every week? We’ve come up with a drop-in league format for both 5 and tenpin that will allow people in this situation to bowl when their work schedule allows. Simply roll-up on the competition day time slots when you’re available and bowl against others who can also make it at the same time. Prizes will be paid ‘on the day’ each week. The league is open to both men and women and will be hosted by the CR Bowling Centre staff. This weekly competition named “The On and Offs League” may just be the flexible bowling solution for you or someone you know to have some great bowling fun. If you’d like to know more, either drop in or phone and talk with any of our staff about this and the many other ideas that are part of the centre’s on-going commitment to making the CR Bowling Centre the entertainment venue of choice in town.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bowling in Canada is clearly defined by the two codes of Tenpin and 5 Pin. At the CR Bowling Centre we’re fortunate to have lanes available for both codes, either for social or league play. The question is often asked of me, which is best? Honestly, it’s a matter of personal preference. 5 Pin is almost an exclusive Canadian thing with not too much happening on the International scene, whereas Tenpin is played at a high level of competition in many countries throughout the world. We have some great bowlers competing in both sides of the house and those who follow either code are as passionate about their sports as any sport enthusiast anywhere in the world. The obvious differences between the two games are the number of pins bowled at and the size and weight of the balls used to knock them down. From that point on, the differences between five and ten, becomes even less obvious. From my coaching perspective, the biomechanics follow very similar principles. Perhaps the biggest difference being the amount of extra effort the bowler needs to control the ball in five pin, compared to the heavier ball in tenpin doing most of the work for the bowler. Both games require a consistent swing and release of the ball to achieve the necessary degree of accuracy. The key is always consistency. If you are making a consistent error, it is a relatively easy task for a coach to recognize it and help put it right.
Bantam Tyees ride wild game into playoffs The Campbell River Booster Juice Bantam A Tyees travelled to Courtenay on Sunday for an exhibition game against the Comox Valley Chiefs. Dominik Bellefleur started in goal for the
Tyees. The team kept the momentum they generated from their recent trip south-of-the-border and were able to spend most of the first period in the Chiefs’ zone. The pressure was finally
too much for Comox Valley to bear as great passing from Matthew Leard to Jaxon Ward resulted in a power-play goal for the Tyees. Comox Va l l e y responded with a 2-on-1
that was defended very well by Seth Parker and Bellefleur but Tyee back-checkers forgot to look behind them and a Comox Valley skater pounced on the rebound to even the score at
one. Comox Valley took the lead after a “wounded fawn” play at centre-ice that trapped a defender in no-man’s land; 2-1 for Comox Valley at the end of the first period. The second period
began with the Tyees again applying pressure. Doug Campbell kept the puck in at the point and put it on net. Parker was cruising the high slot and buried it to knot the score at two. The Tyees TELUS STORE OR AUThORizED DEALER
worked a set breakout play from a defensive zone face-off as Olivia Knowles got the puck to Lukas Lund who fed it forward to Will McLean. McLean controlled the puck and took it hard to the net with speed before wiring it 5-hole; 3-2 for Tyees. During a scramble in front of the Tyee net, Bellefleur made the save of the night, seemingly coming from out of nowhere to block the bar-down efforts of the Chiefs. On a delayed Comox Valley penalty, Jacob Hartley put a shot on net that Damian Rennie deflected to make it 4-2 Tyees at the midgame flood. Carson Bjorgford came in to play goal when action resumed. Unfortunately for him, it seemed that many of the Tyees had the equivalent of a Yuletide hockey flashback with visions of more points dancing around in their heads rather than recognizing “if we don’t let them score again, we win.” Comox Valley scored twice, including one on the power-play. to tie things up at four at the end of the second period. Early into the third period the Tyees again penned Comox Valley in their own end with fatigue and frustration taking its toll. With a delayed penalty looming, McLean got the puck to Lund and he fired it into the back of the onion bag. Comox Valley came right back on the face-off from centre-ice and tied the score at five. The Tyees kept working hard, forechecking relentlessly. Liam Rivett kept the puck in at the point then it bounced off sticks and shin-pads before Lund was able to control it. He took it strong to the net and snapped a wrist shot that beat the Comox Valley goalie cleanly; 6-5 Tyees. The chiefs quickly tied it, then took the lead on a powerplay. The Tyees went on another power-play and Lund completed his natural hat-trick to tie the score at seven. With less than 10 seconds remaining in the game, McLean scored but the goal was disallowed as the net was knocked out of position. Final score was 7-7 tie. The Tyees begin their round-robin playoff run hosting Nanaimo at Rod Brind’Amour Arena on Saturday, Feb. 1 (6:15 p.m.) and Oceanside on Sunday, Feb. 2 (1:00 p.m.) before travelling to Powell River on Feb. 8.
League-leading Young Masters extend points lead Canada Mainstream Young Mastaers enjoyed an important victory in the Vancouver Island Soccer Division Four top of the table clash on Saturday afternoon at Willow Point. The win against second placed Zgoda put them nine points ahead with only five league games remaining. It was a strong squad that lined up against the Victoria outfit and it was clear from the onset that the Young Masters were keen to improve upon their 2-2 result in September when the teams last met at Willow Point. In contrast and despite bringing 14 players Zgoda were without four starters and their attitude at the start of the game suggested they were less Kristen Douglas/the Mirror
than confident. A healthy crowd of local soccer fans enjoyed a close first half and a dominant second from the hosts. Forwards Shane Berry and Wyatt Bryce created a number of early chances with their slick passing and unselfish play. It came as no surprise when Berry scored with a solid header from Kevin Shelswell corner after 18 minutes. Despite spending most of the opening 30 minutes in the opponents’ half the one goal lead was not added to
and Zgoda began to grow in confidence and enjoy a good spell of possession in the final 15 minutes of the first half. Defenders Peter McWilliams and Colan Grootenboer were superb at the back and continually thwarted the forward runs of Zgoda’s speedy Bill Heaton. Young Master Mark Ross was a tower of strength in the centre of the pitch constantly winning the physical battles. Half time was a welcome relief for the home side and allowed them to regroup and prepare for the sec-
ond half. It proved to be an excellent performance in the second half as the home side continued to press with attacking runs by Shelswell, Patrick Cullen and Jacob Blanchard. From a defensive standpoint full backs Jason Fawkes, Alexandre Desrochers, Ivor McWilliams and Colton Reesor were solid and always looked to get forward and support attacks whenever possible. The game remained in the balance but after a brave run by Shelswell he was fouled in the 18 yard box and
earned his side a penalty kick. Captain P. McWilliams drove the ball home in style to secure a two goal lead. Shortly after, Berry ran through a tired looking Zgoda defence and scored his second and the Young Masters third. The Victoria side continued to battle and almost scored a consolation in the dying minutes. However,the score line remained 3-0. Next Saturday the Young Masters travel to Victoria where they take on Saanich Fusion FC at Tyndall Park at 4 p.m.
