Clova Cinema wrestles with digital dilemma as film-reel supplies dwindle Negotiations with theatre’s landlord will determe in the coming weeks whether or not the cinema operators invest in $50,000 digital projector long-term future at the theatre,” Burghardt said.

By Tyler Orton The silver screen may soon dim to black at one of Cloverdale’s most recognizable cultural institutions. Even as studios phase out 35-mm reels in favour of digital alternatives, Clova Cinema is still screening movies the old-fashioned way. The theatre’s operator, Craig Burghardt, said he wants to take the rather expensive leap into digital cinema but remains in a deadlock with the building’s owner over the future of the Clova. “For about seven years now we’ve been trying to get a long-term lease,” Burghardt told The Cloverdale Reporter, adding he expects to find out in February whether or not he will be SUBMITTED able to stick around. He’s spent more than a The Clova Cinema has fundraised $15,000 for a new digital projector as movie studios continue to phase out physical film reels. WHAT’S THE CATCH? The lack of a long-term lease means he could be left with one very expensive piece of equipment but no venue in which to play movies if the landlord finds a new tenant or sells the building. He said the owners want to increase rent 75 per cent, which the theatre can’t afford based on its average number of patrons — sometimes fewer than 10 on weekends. A new digital projector could breathe new life into the cinema, but Burghardt is concerned about taking on a major liability without any long-term assurances from the building’s owner, #9 Holdings. This catch-22 has left both parties at a standstill for years, but there is still the possibility the show will go on even if Burghardt is not operating the cinema. Gail Nelson of #9 Holdings said her company is in discussions with other prospective tenants, one of whom is interested in screening movies if Burghardt was to leave.

Surrey Little Theatre’s new comedy skewers life’s banality By Sheila Reynolds Everyone – well, any adult, anyways – has been there, to some extent. Life progresses and changes. And questions arise about whether this is what life was meant to be. What have I done so far? What will be next? Is it enough? Am I happy? Surrey Little Theatre’s (SLT) latest comedy, Becky’s New Car, tackles the highly relatable themes, taking the audience on one woman’s journey as she veers off the road she views as her mundane reality.

“It’s a good story about what a woman can go through when faced with her hum drum life,” says director Marko Hohlbein, fresh off Langley Players’ production of That Darn Plot last fall. When a grief-stricken millionaire wanders into the car dealership where Becky works, she’s lured by the glimmer the chance at a new life offers. “It’s about all the stuff that goes on in our lives and what keeps us steady and going, you know, keeps the rudder in the water. And then all of a sudden, somebody presents us with an opportunity for a little excitement, a little something different and

we take that little tiny step and the next thing, we’re drawn right into it.” For Becky, the chance at a new life sends her, rather unintentionally, into a complicated – albeit humorous – double life. “It’s a case of how far you go,” says Hohlbein. “In the case of Becky, she stuck her foot in the pool but didn’t quite go for the deep dive. “We’ve all looked at our lives and looked at the pasture over there that looks a little greener… until we get over there and realize it’s full of holes.” See NEW CAR / Page 6

Clova’s fate rests on digital From page one

“There’s actually options in both directions,” she said, adding an entirely different type of small business could also set up shop inside the walls of the distinct red and burgundy building. Nelson added Burghardt was offered a “good deal” last year for a long-term lease, but she hasn’t heard from him since. Furthermore, she said talk of a 75-per-cent rent hike is “out of context” and her company’s offer was “considerably well below market value.” ‘FILM IS DYING’ The difference between film and digital is similar to lugging around a vinyl record player while everyone else listens to music on their iPods. The quality of film may be unmatched, but its practicality is sharply waning. It’s simply not worth it for studios to continue shipping expensive film reels across the continent. This leaves smalltheatre owners with little choice but to invest in the costly digital machines or be left with an ever-dwindling cache of films to screen. For Burghardt, the future of the Clova isn’t going to rest solely on film screenings. Events such as last December’s Christmas pageant and variety show, and a summertime fundraiser based on The Amazing Race TV show have drawn big crowds.

The theatre has also booked bands and served as a shooting location for movies and TV shows — most notably Smallville. Burghardt said he wants to broaden the customer base and give loyal patrons more to do since it’s clear to him the current business model is not sustainable. “Film is dying. It’s really hard to get product now — really hard,” he said. “I’ve only got the Lego movie. That will hold us for a while, but after that I don’t know.”

Gateway project soon to break ground By Tyler Orton A prime piece of Cloverdale real estate that’s sat vacant nearly 15 years won’t be a patch of dirt much longer. Construction on the Cloverdale Gateway project is expected to start by late February or early March, according to the building’s architect, after Surrey city council approved a final rezoning application last month. A two-storey office and retail building at the entrance of the historic downtown core would replace the empty lot that was once home to a gas station. Burnaby’s PJ Lovick Architects firm spearheaded the design featuring brick columns, long wood beams and tall glass windows. “It will be a great gateway piece, said architect Andrea Scott, adding construction on the corner of Highway 10 and 176 Street should be finished by the year’s end. The site — presently populated by dirt and overgrown plants — sits kitty-corner to the heritage rail car barn and replica train station on the opposite side of Highway 10. The close proximity of the two locations guided Scott’s design process.

“We did need to stay within the heritage railway design ideas, which are the guidelines from the City of Surrey, she said. “We took a look at some classic railway stations and played off that.

Once completed, the building would be the first structure most people spot when driving into the downtown core from

Highway 10. Paul Orazietti, executive director of the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association, said projects like this and the proposed Cloverdale West Village on 175 Street and 57 Avenue have the promise of transforming the neighbourhood. “The game plan here now is to take the areas west of 176th (Street) and go medium density, he said. Although there won’t be any residential units within the Cloverdale Gateway project, Scott said the multi-storey commercial development still pushes the neighbourhood toward increased densification. “It brings more commercial revitalization to a community that people would otherwise use as a transient point to go from one point to another, she said. “Now they’re stopping and they’re actually making it a node (in) which to use and to make a community.

Book Reviews I’ve recently become involved in writing book reviews for a blog for Christian school librarians. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but not being very tech-savvy, I was unable to set up such a blog myself. So, I was quite excited when someone else took the initiative, and then invited me to join. I read a lot of kids’ books, so it wasn’t long before I was ready to write my first review for this semi-public audience. And that’s when I started to doubt myself: what if others disagreed with my views on what is good writing style, a well-rounded character, or an interesting plot line? Even more important with this audience, what if others disagreed with me as to the moral and ethical value of a piece of literature for a Christian school library? The blog is still very new, so there hasn’t been much feedback yet; I still don’t know how my book reviews will be received. One book that has been receiving mixed reviews for centuries is the Bible. While Christians hold it to be the infallible and inspired word of God, Wednesdays 7-9 (both locations) critics have accused it of everything from childish mythology to hate-mongering. ‘New Car’ play presents a funny From page one

Playing the protagonist is South Surrey’s Robyn Bradley, who won a best actress award for SLT’s 2012 production of Mending Fences. She’s confident the plot will strike a chord with pretty much anyone. “I think that maybe people don’t actually act in the way that she (Becky) acted, but I think people are often presented with those kinds of choices in life. Everyone can relate to what she’s going through at some point in their life.” The comedy was what drew Bradley to the role, but the attraction to the lead part wasn’t immediate. “I actually read the script and it starts with about a six-page monologue. I looked at the monologue – I didn’t PHOTO CREDIT read it – and I went ‘well, From left to right: Harry Pering, Terry Thomas and Philip J. Hale co-star in Becky’s New Car. I’m out. Help!! I don’t feel comfortable explaining my automotive problems? A common problem for both men and women in regards to automotive concerns is that we are not familiar with some basic terms. If you are uncertain what to look for or how to describe Susanne Figueira, Manager a problem think about your senses – look, listen, feel and smell. • A physical problem or sensation – run on, hesitation, surging • A mechanical issue or unusual sounds – grinding, squeaking, metallic noises • Visual clues – drips or pools of fluids • Visual signs – warning lights or warning indicators on in the dash • Frequency, location & change – how often does the issue occur, where does a noise originate, has there been changes in things like fuel or oil consumption, changes in overall handling. A: There is often a large difference in fees between centres. At KidZrock, we struggle to keep our fees affordable while managing our expenses. Rent (there are many restrictions and necessities for the building that houses a daycare centre) and wages for a limited amount of children and staff to child ratios swallow up most of the fees. But if you break your fees down to an hourly amount, often you will find you are paying less money at a daycare than you would to an unqualified babysitter! This month, to show our appreciation, we are offering our new registrations at all our centres the first month for free! (based on a min. 2 month contract). A: For some of us, our furry friends sleep right next to us and that ends the discussion…but if Fido has a bed other than yours in the house, here is some interesting information. Cedar and/or Pine shavings are commonly used in pet bedding products. The question is, are they safe? These products are good at controlling odor and they do have some insecticidal properties due to the volatile compounds (phenols) they give off, however, it is these compounds that have been found as a potential health risk – in both humans and our pets. Some of the problems are associated with respiratory issues (asthma, inflammation and breathing), allergies (skin) and changes in liver enzymes. Why take the chance?? Our pets spend a fair amount of their day sleeping…with so many options available, consider a “certified safe” alternative to wood filled beds.

accelerating your freedom to a mortgage free life. Change your Payment Frequency. Most mortgages now come with the option to pay your mortgage at a frequency that matches your cash flow. Consider paying bi-weekly or weekly rather than monthly as you can shave approx. 5 years off your amortization and be mortgage free sooner. Investigate a refinance to consolidate other debt. Most unsecured debt is priced at a higher rate than your mortgage. For many people it makes sense to use available home equity to pay out this debt, as it typically reduces interest costs significantly.

Flexible Families: The Benefits of Family Yoga by Joani Mortenson, MSW, RSW, RYT

Family yoga programs are emerging as a fun way for families to bond and play together, while also learning how to relax, renew and restore. In these busy times of hustle and bustle, moving through jam-packed days with school, work, afterschool activities, homework and mealtime preparation, many families are feeling stressed, exhausted and disconnected. Family Yoga is a wonderful way for a family

to de-stress together. Many family members report increased relaxation and less stress in the household with regular yoga practice. Yoga promotes holistic health because it involves both the body and the mind. There is a growing body of evidence-based research to demonstrate the many beneÀts of yoga for both physical and mental health from reliable medical sources, including the Mayo Clinic and the World Health Organization. Hatha yoga is becoming increasingly accepted

by the medical community as a safe, gentle and healing practice when taught by qualiÀed instructors and in collaboration with an integrated health team. Yoga is especially good for children. Among the physical beneÀts, yoga aids in building healthy, balanced brains. Neuromuscular development is strengthened as connections and awareness between the brain and the body are consistently highlighted during a yoga class. see page 11

Cloverdale Community and Recreation services celebrates Family! Finding time together and maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle for families is often challenging! Being physically active, eating well, decreasing screen time for our children and becoming more engaged and involved in our community are things that many families think about. Studies show that children who believe they are competent and have the skills to be physically active are likely to be more active. Those children who feel they are supported by their families are also more likely to participate. These positive experiences that occur in childhood can provide a framework for wellness that can lead to an active lifestyle throughout adulthood. Knowing the importance of family engagement, the Cloverdale Recreation Services team welcomes you to visit our facilities and enjoy the many programs, activities and services available for families in the Cloverdale area. From family

drop-in gym times, family yoga, parent participation registered programs and monthly themed family fun nights, we have something for everyone. We also feature an affordable yearly and monthly family pass. With your family pass you have access to all of our Àtness/weight rooms, drop-in gym programs, swim, skate and non- registered aquatic Àtness programs. Working in partnership with OPTIONS Community Services we offer a family resource program at the Cloverdale Recreation Centre where parents can meet other parents in their community and learn about different resources that may be helpful in raising young children. We strive to provide a safe, fun and supportive environment in which children and families thrive. To ensure all city residents may participate fully in leisure services and activities we have a Leisure Financial Support program. The

The changing face of families in Surrey - inspiring innovation By Susan Papadionissiou, Coordinator, Children’s Partnership, Surrey - White Rock

The Children’s Partnership is a partnership of Ministry of Children and Family Development, Fraser Health, City of Surrey, Surrey Libraries, Surrey School District and United Way of the Lower Mainland. It goes without saying that Surrey is experiencing the fastest and largest growth of families in B.C. Look around this vast city and I challenge anyone to Ànd a neighbourhood that has not experienced significant changes over the last six years. In fact, the latest census results bear out our perceptions and lived experience. Between 2006 and 2011 the population of Surrey / White Rock grew by 18 percent (76,000 people) to 488,000. We know that in each month of the year, 1,000 people move to Surrey and 500 babies are born (with 400 of those babies born in Surrey Memorial Hospital). Think about that for a moment…500 children would Àll one typical elementary school. For Surrey – White Rock, between 2006 and 2011, the number of children aged six and un-

der grew by 5,000 children for a total of 35,600 and the number of children aged six – 12 increased by 8,400 for a total of 42,354. And this is just the beginning as projections are that by 2041 one in Àve residents of Metro Vancouver will live in Surrey. While we are all familiar with the challenges of this exponential growth, we also know there is cause for celebration. What better time to reÁect on the overwhelming rewards of being a young and growing city of families, than on B.C.’s Family Day? Indeed, let’s toast this day with a full glass. There are many reasons for optimism on this day. We have a Surrey Board of Trade that has developed a Families and Business Resolution and an annual Family Friendly Workplace Award. In Surrey, the Children’s Partnership and community agencies have collaborated to develop innovative responses that will support families and neighbourhoods using non- traditional approaches. One such program is the “Pop Up” Family Resource program, inspired by a collaborative between Diversecity Community Re-

sources, Options Community Services and Alexandra Neighbourhood House. The “pop up” is based on the concept of retail pop ups and will operate out of a temporary site – a vacant retail space, a religious institution, a recreation centre, library, a housing development – where a team of outreach workers and family educators / early childhood educators, could set up equipment and activities to engage with caregivers and children. The program follows families “where they are” and becomes an extension of other daily activities and routines, such as shopping, recreation and religious activities. Funding from the Vancouver Foundation has provided the support to develop and test this pilot approach. We are planning our Àrst “pop up” for March and hope to continue through until August 2014. Here in Surrey – the challenges of growth are being met through innovation, collaboration and partnerships. Happy Family Day! For more see our website: www.childrenspartnershipsurreywr.com

Flexible Families: The Benefits of Family Yoga continued from page 10

This practice helps children develop functional control of their Àne and gross motor skills, while also increasing coordination, balance and concentration. Yoga promotes core strength (which helps children to establish life-long healthful posture habits), relaxes the body, promotes better sleep, increases immunity to guard against illness, improves digestion and elimination, and helps to manage existing condition, such as ADD and ADHD. As childhood obesity becomes an increasing concern in North America,

family yoga is a wonderful way for parents to promote physical activity in a way that fosters dignity for children who may struggle with weight issues. Yoga teaches self-compassion and thus promotes positive self-esteem, personal responsibility and supports students to become the best version of themselves. The mental and cognitive beneÀts of yoga, especially for children, include the reduction of stress and anxiety, promotion of critical thinking, and stimulation and strengthening of auditory processing and responsiveness. Yoga also helps children to expand

Family support programs recharge parents’ vigour for raising kids By Sherry Sinclair, FRP-BC Board Member Parenting – one of life’s most challenging and rewarding commitments. Parenting can be confusing, delightful, lonely and fulÀlling, sometimes all at the same time! It’s great to have someone to talk to and a place to go on days when it all feels a bit much. This simple premise is at the heart

of more than 250 Family Resource Programs operating in B.C. Their work is centred on a grassroots concept developed in the 1970s that continues to thrive today. Wherever you live in B.C., chances are there’s a Family Resource Program (FRP) nearby (http://www. frpbc.ca/dir/). Often known as Family Centre or Family Place, FRPs are community-based family sup-

port programs designed to strengthen parenting skills, provide stimulating play environments for children and promote family and community engagement. Across the province, FRPs are located in family service organizations, community centres, neighbourhood houses, friendship centres, military family centres and Boys and Girls Clubs. B.C. Association of Family Resource Programs (http:// www.frpbc.ca/) guide the FRP practice, assuring the delivery of high-quality, comprehensive, accessible programs for families with young children. Most Family Resource Programs are open Àve days per week for three to four hours per day. Early Childhood Educators facilitate play-based learning activities to support children’s learning and development. Educated family support staff provide resources and support to parents and other caregivers. The parent-child interactive drop-in program is the gateway which promotes engagement and connection for parents/caregivers along a continuum of research-based family development services that includes: 1) family support, 2) play-based learning, 3) early learning and literacy, 4) parent education, and 5) information and referrals. FRPs promote healthy parent-child attachment to achieve healthy self-regulation. Family Resource Programs understand how supporting the child’s social

and emotional development is vital to the child’s success in life, including success in school. Families attend FRPs for a variety of reasons. Some families attend the daily parent/child dropin to connect with other families, learn about early childhood development and the importance of children’s play. Other families may be looking for speciÀc support with counselling, mental health or legal services. FRPs are central for newcomers raising young children. FRP parent and caregivers are supported through their achievements and challenges, discovering new ways to parent their unique and wonderful children. Family Resource Programs provide wrap-around support to meet the needs of all families. With growing concerns about the vulnerability of children in our communities, Family Resource Programs go back to the basics providing families with the support

they need to raise their children and keep the family together. The FRP approach is respectful and positive. Building on the parent and child’s strengths, providing a listening ear and acknowledging that all parents want to be good parents, FRPs positively impact the ability of adults to parent their children. This results in children who thrive and grow up to be contributing members of our neighborhoods who care for our communities.

Nurturing discipline: a grocery store lesson Dr. Vanessa Lapointe, R. Psych. Founder, The Wishing Star - Lapointe Developmental Clinic It can be seen at any long grocery store line-up. The older brother starts pestering the younger sister who is asking the parent for the 27th time to please buy them that sugar-loaded treat. The parent is becoming increasingly exasperated. The other people in the line-up are starting to stare. And then it happens…the yelly-shoutygrocery-store-parent moment. It often goes something like “ENOUGH!!! I have told you 8 times to keep your hands off your sister. And as for you, the answer is NO!! There will be no treat!!!” One child is then banished to the other side of the cart. One or both start crying. And while the fighting and whining have stopped, nobody is left feeling very good about any of it. Discipline is a topic that receives a lot of attention. The popular discipline “methods” today are all focused on making behaviour go away so that we can get on with our lives. They are generally quick-fix strategies that have very little grounding in the science of child development. And while these methods may indeed result in stopping

the behaviour, the question we must ask ourselves is “at what cost?” What are we willing to put on the line for that moment of peace in the grocery store? Contemporary science, including neuroimaging and neurochemistry, have confirmed beyond any doubt that once a child’s physical needs have been addressed, the most important influence on child development is that the child feels they can count on their parent to take care of them emotionally. As part of this, the universal fear of all children is that their parent will abandon them – physically or emotionally. What does this tell us about how we should be disciplining our children? Let’s go back to the grocery store and reconsider what our real goal is. Our goal is perhaps not the obvious one of having the children settle down. Rather, our goal is to have our children feel our understanding as we guide them to a place of being settled. Our goal is that their brains will learn there is a way back to being calm. Our goal is that they know to look to us as their answer. Our goal is that they can trust us to keep it together and show them the way through. With all of this in mind, the costs of having our children feel “abandon-

ment,” either through our anger at them or through actually sending them away from us to calm down, become all too apparent. So the next time you find yourself on the verge of a yelly-shouty-grocery-storeparent moment, remember what is important. Be reminded of the impressionable brains and souls you are helping to grow. Find your way to firm but kind responses that define clear boundaries in an empathetic way. “It looks to me like you are having a hard time keeping your hands to yourself right now. Sometimes that happens but it needs to stop. I can help you with that. Come stand by me and let’s see if we can count how many people are in line with us.” Or “I know you really want this treat. It is hard when I say no. I know you are somewhat mad about that right now. That’s ok. I understand.” And yes the tears may come, the anger may erupt, and it may all feel like so much more work. But, when you consider what you have gifted your children in terms of their chance to truly grow up with brains and souls that function in the best possible way, it becomes extraordinarily manageable.
