This new, two level rate structure was designed to encourage you to save energy where possible. You’re billed at a lower rate (9.09 cents) for the first 1,600 kWh. Your use above this amount is then billed at a higher rate (13.54 cents). Under this new structure, about 71 per cent of our customers pay the same or less than they would under the previous flat rate structure. Learn more at fortisbc.com/electricityrates.
Equal payment and other options We offer a variety of billing service options to meet your needs.
Understanding interim rates Each year we go through a rate setting process with the BC Utilities Commission. Interim rates are set before the process is completed and can change. If they do, your bill can be credited and adjusted accordingly.

Mir donors get unique and loving tribute SUBMITTED
In order to recognize the generosity of its donors, the Mir Centre for Peace has fashioned a permanent tribute that’s custom made and uniquely fitting for the Castlegar landmark. Earlier this month, more than 50 people gathered at the historic building overlooking the Columbia River at Castlegar’s Selkirk College Campus. The occasion was the unveiling of a handcrafted quilt serving as a donor wall to thank those who helped establish an endowment fund for the Mir Centre for Peace Lecture Series. “It’s amazing,” said Pat Henman, part of the Selkirk College team charged with establishing the endowment fund for the lecture series. “I am so overwhelmed by its artistry and beauty. It’s phenomenal to see all those names that were so important to making the lecture series come to life digitized on the leaves of this quilt.” The Mir Centre for Peace was established in 1999 with a mandate of understanding and building cultures of peace through education. The centre is housed in an early 20th Century Doukhobor communal dwelling on what was once traditional aboriginal lands. Selkirk
Instrumental in the project were (L-R) Eileen Koozhetsoff (president of the USCC Ladies Cultural Interpretive Society), Lovette Nichvaeloff (organizing committee member), Selkirk College President Angus Graeme, Mary Pozdnekoff (quilter), Pat Henman (Selkirk College Community Liaison), Paulette Markin (quilter) and Verna Chernoff (quilter). Submitted
College inherited the buildings and site in 1966. The Mir Lecture Series is one part of the overall work being done at the centre. Each year the series brings in a diverse selection of inspiring local and international speakers who help promote the culture of peace. The first lecture took place in September, 2007 when Stephen Lewis came to the West Kootenay. Since that time between four and six speakers take part in the series each year. In order to bring the renowned speakers–who present at a number of venues in Castlegar and Trail– to the West Kootenay, the endowment fund was established as an important starting point. In total 129 individuals and groups donated to the fund. The quilt was put together in order to
provide a unique way to recognize the community members who made it happen. “We wanted something different and extra special, so we contacted the USCC Ladies Cultural Interpretive Society,” said Selkirk College Donor Services Coordinator Joyce Buckler. “Having the quilting ladies on board was very important to us and helps speak to what this centre represents.” Five quilters stepped forward to help with the project and this past summer poured hundreds of hours into creating the large quilt representing a tree and including 129 leaves digitized with the donor names. “We went step by step, we had no idea that it would turn out like this,” said Mary Pozdnekoff, one of the members of the quilting team. “We

have never done anything quite like this before and the outcome is more than we could have imagined.” Pozdnekoff was joined by Timmie Jean Tack, Joy Rogers, Paulette Markin and Verna Chernoff on the project which started from scratch with the dyeing of the fabric and creation of the large tree. The individual leaves were then hand sewn and digitized with the names. Finally the intricate job of quilting the entire finished project fell into the hands of Chernoff. “I’m really proud of this, it was my first attempt at an artistic
flair,” said Chernoff, who has been quilting since she retired from teaching in Castlegar 11 years ago. “All my past work was patches and sew and structure. This was the first free motion attempt I have ever done.” Chernoff—who has had her work featured at the prestigious Canadian Quilters Association Show—said there was plenty of pressure putting together this project. “There is huge significance in those names and they must be recognized for their important contribution to the Mir Centre and this community,” said Chernoff. “I was so happy to take part and work with all the very talented ladies who made this happen.” The next Mir Lecture Series event takes place on February 28 at 7 p.m. when American journalist and political activist Chris Hedges will speak at the Brilliant Cultural Centre. Tickets for the event are available at the Selkirk College Bookstore in Castlegar, Otter Books in Nelson and at the door ($16 and $13 for students/seniors).

Davenport, BC was the old Kootenay River landing GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser
Forty-fourth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Davenport, also known as Davenport’s landing or crossing, was an obscure place just below the Taghum beach rapids on the south side of the Kootenay River. It was first mentioned in the Nelson Miner’s debut issue of June 21, 1890 in a story about construction of the railway between Nelson and Robson: “The [steamer] Idaho runs down to the head of the rapids; there the supplies are transferred to bateau and taken to Davenport’s landing, where a portage is made crossing below the falls.” A week later, Revelstoke’s Kootenay Star added: “A new town named Davenport has been started at the Falls 4½ miles below Nelson. There
are numerous buildings erected and in course of construction … The Poorman mine and mill are working full-time with very satisfactory results to its enterprising owners, Davenport and Hussey of Spokane Falls.”
“A new town named Davenport has been started at the falls, 4 1/2 miles below Nelson.” Kootenay Star The eponymous Davenport was Abraham Lincoln (Linc) Davenport (1864-?), who managed the mill. His father, John Colver Davenport (1830-1919), was in turn the namesake of Davenport, Wash., and while it’s a bit hazy, John appears to have been an uncle to Louis Davenport, who built Spokane’s Davenport Hotel. Only a few other
newspaper references to this place appeared over the next few months, including in the Miner of July 26: “Smith & Woods have started a hotel at the Davenport crossing of the Kootenay. It will have the only billiard and ‘Dutch pool’ tables in the Kootenay Lake country.” The same paper noted on September 20 that Columbia & Kootenay railway contractor Hugh F. Keefer was “making his headquarters at the place known as Davenport, 4 miles down the river from Nelson.” On October 18: “The timber will be taken out of the river at Davenport’s landing and hauled by wagon to the bridge site.” And on November 29: “When completed to the crossing, freight can easily be brought up to Nelson by way of the portage at Davenport’s landing ...” Davenport was also listed in the 1891
Henderson’s BC directory as “A town on Kootenay River, West Kootenay district, 6 miles west of Nelson” with the sole resident being hotelier John Smith. Though the name didn’t last much be-
yond that, the hotel did. Smith’s partner Robert Wood bought him out and ran it for the next 15 years. The log building was known as the Thistle Hotel, and in liquor license applications its location was vari-
ously given as Woodville, Woodsville, or Granite. Wood died in his sleep at the hotel in 1906, apparently brought on by stress following a burglary attempt. It’s not clear how long the building stood af-
ter that. The Granite Poorman mine that gave birth to Davenport became one of the greatest producers in the district, shipping over two tonnes of gold, silver, lead, copper, and zinc through 1954.

Welcome to the driver’s seat
Honda knows how to make a good, solid car—and for 2014—things just got a little more interesting. Zack Spencer
Visit the 2014 Honda Civic gallery at DrivewayBC.ca
From rather ordinary to rather extraordinary Tampa, Florida – Being the best at something is an achievement, and doing it repeatedly is impressive. The Honda Civic’s 16-year streak as the best selling passenger car in Canada is nothing short of astounding. For the introduction the 2014 Civic, Honda chose usually sunny and hot Tampa, to introduce their latest update. It was sunny but anything from hot, with overnight temperatures near freezing. Honda has been improving the Civic continuously since the 7th generation model was introduced as a 2012 model. Last year, for 2013, they updated the styling, handling and interior of the 2013 model and now for 2014 they are at it again. Looks The styling focus for 2014 is on the coupe. Roughly 15 per cent of all Civics are sold as a coupe, the most dominant player in the small coupe market. Last year, this sedan received updates to the front and rear styling to help make it look more upscale and sophisticated, and this year the coupe gets a similar update to the front and back, but the changes are meant to provide a sportier look with a bit more aggression. The most aggressive version of both
addition, the front seats are very supportive and the steering wheel is low and small for a racy feel. What is new for both the sedan and this coupe is the introduction of Display Audio system that is available From fuel on the EX and Touring economy to reliability, models. This is a large iPad-like touch-screen resale value, cost design that lets the driver of ownership and access many functions Inside sportiness the 2014 from the radio to apps One of the reasons that Honda Civic is a good that piggyback off your the Civic is the best iPhone. (No Android apps selling car in Canada is choice yet but they are working the practical, yet sporty Zack Spencer on this.) This taps into the interior in both the sedan power of your phone, in and coupe. Many people, the big screen, with full including me, didn’t integration. I liked the speed and funcinitially like the split dash with the tion of the design but really missed a speedometer on the top and the tarotary dial to adjust the volume over a chometer on the bottom, but over time touch screen volume design. The trip computer and other Drive functions like radio station information Honda has made one small change are just below the front window. In and one big change to help with fuel the sedan and coupe is the SI model that gets an even more forceful grille and front bumper design plus a rear spoiler and lower air diffuser. Wheel sizes have also changed with the regular coupe receiving 16-inch wheels, up from 15-inches, and the SI now bumps the size from 17-inches to 18-inches.

economy. The small one is the exhaust system has been adjusted in both the sedan and coupe to let the engine breath better, improving horsepower slightly from 140hp to 143hp. The big change is the introduction of an inhouse continuously variable transmission (CVT), replacing the old 5-speed automatic. This actually makes this little car more drivable and might be the best CVT on the market. The car snaps away from a stop and cruises with ease on the highway, with quick changes

in the gear ratio that helps mimic a conventional automatic design. In addition, there is a sport mode and paddle shifters on the steering wheel to help liven things up. Honda has done a first rate job here and their efforts have been rewarded with a six per cent improvement in city fuel economy and an overall drop from 6.2L/100km combined to 6.0L, something very hard to do with such a small car. The driving dynamics of the Civic has always been very good due to a fully independent suspension and willing engine. The 143hp is a nice match for this car and the CVT is a great complement. The 5-speed manual is a blast to drive but it could use a 6th gear on the highway, as the high-revving engine can get noisy. The steering is crisp and the car overall instills a high level of confidence. Verdict Honda admits that their Civic might not be the top choice in every reason to buy a compact car but they are near the top in all categories. From fuel economy to reliability, resale value, cost of ownership and sportiness this car is a good choice. The many improvements made to the car over the past three-model-years, has taken the Civic from rather ordinary to rather extraordinary. They know how to make a good, solid, reliable car and for 2014 things just a little bit more interesting. Vintage pickups and SUVs are among the hottest things in the collector car world. Not surprisingly, they are also popular on the big and small screen. Here are five fine examples. 1. 1973 Ford F-250 (“The Blues Brothers”): After stiffing the proprietor of Bob’s Country Bunker on a huge bar tab, Jake and Elwood Blues take off in the Bluesmobile with “The Good Ole Boys” — the country and western act that they’d impersonated at said bar — in hot pursuit. Love the shot of two of the angry musicians in costume glaring out of the front windows of the camper shell, just before the truck winds up on its side. 2. 1967 Ford Bronco (“Green Acres”): The much-loved CBS comedy featured a then-new
red 1967 Ford Bronco as the official vehicle of scatter-brained county agent Hank Kimball, usually seen driven around Hooterville and the Douglas farm (minus doors and top). For most of its run, “Green Acres” was sponsored by the Ford Motor Company, so the Bronco’s frequent appearances were no surprise. 3. 1972 Chevrolet C-10 (“Dazed and Confused”): The 1993 Richard Linklater high school cult classic that was set in the mid-1970s featured what appeared to be a 1972 Chevy C-10 pickup in Cheyenne trim. It was driven by paddle-wielding upper-classman Benny O’Donnell (played by Cole Hauser), who freshmen encountered at their peril. 4. 1999 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning (“The Fast and the Furious”): Lead actor Paul Walker drove

Pick of the Week: Super Bowl MVP keeps on trucking The Fast and the Furious: 1973 Ford F-100 in “The Dukes of Hazzard” (Photo Courtesy of Warner Bros) this very special Ford pickup. Produced by Ford’s Special Vehicles Team, the 1999 Lightning featured a supercharged 5.4-litre V-8 that produced 360 hp. It was used as a parts getter in the first of the Fast and Furious movies. 5. 1973 Ford F-100 (“The Dukes of Hazzard”): Yeah, it’s a shock, there were pickup trucks featured in the “Dukes of Hazzard.” Uncle Jesse always seemed to have a semi-ratty white Ford pickup. Most of the time it was a ’73 F-100 but in early episodes, he could be seen with a 1968 Ford stepside pickup and in later ones, a late 1970s F-250. ICBC Safety Tip
Drives-U-Crazy One-eyes
Cars and trucks with only one headlight shining drives many readers crazy. It may not seem like a big deal to drive with a light out in the city...until you hit a fog bank. And bear in mind that in pitch black conditions in rural areas a car with a light out
looks like a motorcycle from a distance. And that’s deadly. Drivers judge distance by subconsciously noting how the two beams of an oncoming car widen as it gets nearer. What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
B.C.’s Family Day offers many of us the first chance of taking a long weekend away. If you’re taking a road trip with your family, it’s a good idea to plan your rest stops ahead of time to avoid feeling fatigued behind the wheel and to give the kids a chance to burn off their energy.

For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

At Kootenay Chrysler, we don’t sell you a car, we help you buy one.
For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!” Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby. Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit. Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can find her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive. When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either find her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world. While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. And to really help her relax, she scrapbooks. Share your thoughts and requests with Alexandra at alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Lighting your way down the road By Ian Harwood
Light emitting diode (LED) lights are slowly taking over the automotive industry. These lights are made from extremely small semiconductor diodes that are capable of creating bright light. They work very similarly to standard lights but instead of a filament, an LED creates light using nothing but the movement of electricity along the path of its semiconductor. As the electrons stream across the semiconductor, they
create electromagnetic radiation. Some forms of this electromagnetic radiation can take the form of light. LED lights are becoming increasing popular these days on trucks. Gone are the days of putting the highest wattage sealed beam lamps you could find, often referred to as airplane landing lights, on your bumper or roll-bar to light up the night sky to enjoy some extended off-road driving hours. LED lights not only give you incredible light but they draw so
little amperage. This is a real advantage over adding a second alternator or constantly having to jump-start your dead battery. Off-road LED lights come in many different shapes and sizes. This helps with the many different sizes of grille openings or bumper light locations. Rigid industries are a pioneer in this new off-road light technology. They offer many different kinds of lights. The dually light is a small 3” x 3” cube that has 1300 lumens of light that has the same output as a 50w light

while only drawing 15 watts. A pair of these lights cost $219. E-series lights are LED light bars that come in various lengths. The 4” E-series light is available in a flood or spot pattern that has an amp draw of 1.18 and a life span over 50,000 hours. Cost is $258. The 6” E-series light is available in a flood, spot, or a combo. It also has a 50,000+ life span and draws 1.77 amps. For some serious amount of light, there are the 30”, 40” and 50” light bars that have an unbreakable polycarbonate lens and are available in a spot, flood, or a combo. The 50” light bar gives off enough light

to reach distances of 1,497 metres. Theses price from $1,099 to $1,759. Now finding a place to mount them to your truck can pose a challenge. There are some mounting brackets that are universal and some vehicle specific brackets but generally, you have to get creative. The front bumper usually is a great place to start. The OEMs are great for providing spots to mount their optional lights. You can also purchase bumper mounted light bars that can hold one long light bar or two smaller ones. Make sure the location you choose is not lower than the bumper or your expensive new lights may get knocked

Rigid now offers for 2014, curved lights that will fit across the top of the windshield and have mounting brackets for most trucks. Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week February 7, 2014
Tip of the Week: Mercury Retrograde is back for the 1st of its tri-annual tours to tease and taunt and tickle our fancies. Well not everyone will see it quite this way. Confusions, conundrums, tantrums and even tears are more common reactions. Yes, Mercury moving backward, from our experiential perspective, has a way of messing with all modes of communication. Disruptions to our technological devices are one of its favourite frolics. However, not all its antics produce frustrations and negative results. We can choose to tune-in and play along, to accept its slanted communication style and thereby receive the gifts it brings. It is when we are not aware of its contribution and the usual upsets that tend to accompany its tours that reaction are highest. This is one of the many advantages that Astrology has to offer. It increases our awareness and understanding of ourselves, others and the rhythm and flow of synchronistic events. Getting mad at the mythic winged messenger does not help much either, probably just the opposite. Mercury is the master of mind-bending riddles and rejoices in a play of words, concepts and perceptions. So, tune-in and pay attention to observe the pranks and antics of this playful if annoying archetype. Take it to the test and ask yourself if it is just ‘all in your head’. Or is there something after all to this synchronicity stuff? The cycle begins on February 6 at 3 Pisces 18 and ends on February 28 at 18 Aquarius 10 in the Tropical Zodiac. It will then take another 3 weeks taking us all the way to spring to recover the ground lost while travelling back from where it began. This ‘shadow period’ is not nearly so strong but the ring of Mercury’s bells will still linger and echo on. P.S. Now might be a good time to back-up your hard drive and the like.

Your sights are set on the future. The pace is quick now and you are determined to persist. Change brings opportunity and production, yet sometimes casualty as well. This may be especially true on relationships fronts and this cycle will continue all month. Aim to give equal attention according to priority to bring all you’re your relationships to higher ground. As busy as you are and getting a lot of attention, you may be equally engaged and active behind the scenes. You likely feel extra committed these days so are able to take it all in stride, despite the overtime. A swell, you may have to retrace some steps over the coming weeks. Weaving stimulating cultural activity into the mix should keep your spirits elevated. Your social agenda of late is probably very full. Expect this trend to continue. Fortunately, you are in a playful and provocative mood. Still, you have to endure some pointed lessons. At best these are making you stronger, as sobering as they may be. Otherwise they will prove disruptive. If so, you will benefit from definite goals producing stronger boundaries. Managing a steady flow of changes continues. These are linked to finances, friendships and generally what you consider most important in life. Dealing with these has perhaps gained more attention that you want. Making efforts to step back and close the curtains from unwanted eyes and noses will feel good over the coming weeks. Opening yourself to new people and ideas is in the spotlight. Yet, some of these may not be so easy to embrace. However, learning new things and then expressing them, at least verbally and ideally in writing, could produce enlivening new realizations. It may take a week or two to formulate your thoughts clearly. Activate new ideas to integrate fresh perspectives. Some cycles carry a heavier workload than others. The emphasis here is upon inner work. Your basic task includes nurturing a healthy self-regard. Your inner critic may be extra loud now. Making some needed improvements is a good idea, rather than succumb to frustration or depression. Balance constructive self-criticism with healthy doses of self-acknowledgement.

This time of year often produces the blues. See this investment as a way of paying some dues. Generally this is an expansive time for you, even though it requires more concentration than usual. Taking the time and making extra effort to socialize is important as well. Aim to share your vitality and beauty for positive and pleasant returns. How can you get a lot done without leaving home? This may sound idealistic, but if you could you would. At least once you get home you will want to stay there. That does not mean you will be idle. You are ambitious to get a lot done. This does not include catering to the whims of others. You have creative work to do and you mean business. Getting measurable returns for your efforts is on your mind. Beyond the usual routine, you are on a quest for answers. Keeping your confidence and enthusiasm levels high is part of the challenge. Knowing who you are and where you truly belong are lingering questions. This is a soul searching process. Here’s a clue: you are a soul. Meditate upon what that means. Getting clear on what is most important to you is a central theme now. This is prompting an experiential and experimental approach. You will poke and provoke to get new answers, insights and results, especially this week. Just be ready to receive some responses that challenge your comfort zone. This entire theme is a feature of a pioneering social expansion process. You are entering new territory. While you may feel a bit overwhelmed just now, your focus will sharpen over the coming weeks. Already your ambitions are spurred. Your convictions will be strong and clear provided that you feel there is meaning and purpose in your chosen path. If you feel confused and conflicted now, seek counsel. A busy time behind the scenes continues. The kind of work depends on you. Your imagination is racing; make sure to keep it on a healthy track. Sometimes dealing with illness offers its own lessons and wisdom. Either way, you seek seclusion for a while. Attaining knowledge is featured. The prospects of future goals, dreams and ambitions are prime motivations.
