Go Sylvan Lake Go
- It was billed as a chance to bid farewell to the old arena which served the community well for 42 years. A sea of people was the goal to Darcy Rosie who organized a final “Sylvan Lake Arena Commemorative Salute Photo” session for Tuesday afternoon. As the magic hour of 4:30 approached, a steady stream of people descended on the back yard of the arena, in view of the collapsed roof. Organized in less than a week, messages went out to hockey teams, skaters and all those who had visited the ‘ol girl’ in the last four decades. Rosie, high on a boom truck, directed the crowd and snapped pictures while others also captured the moment. Hockey sticks were raised in salute while in the background was a banner which is making its way around town, “Go Sylvan Lake STEVE DILLS Go, Hockeyville Fever 2014”. As soon as it began, people quickly departed again as the -20˚C temperatures put a frigid blanket over the affair.

- With snow falling last Thursday, a track hoe from Calfort Enterprises Demolition crashed through the roof of the #3 washroom at the end of 38th Street in Sylvan Lake Provincial Park. By the time the machine was loaded onto a lowboy and moved away, the site was cleaned up and bare of any structure. “The province assessed the building and determined the structure, internal fixtures and underground infrastructure to be worn out and repairs no longer viable,” said the town’s CAO Betty Osmond in a report to councillors at their Dec. 9 meeting. “The washroom will not be replaced as the existing number of washrooms in Sylvan Lake Provincial Park and the town’s Centennial Park are believed to be sufficient for visitors using the area,” SEAN MCINTYRE

Pond hockey, speed skating, ice races cancelled; Winterfest moved BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
This year will go down in history for weather which has caused several lake-based events to be curtailed. Several weeks ago, Foothills Speed Skating Marathon Association announced cancellation of speed skating marathon events planned for Sylvan Lake. “The ice on Sylvan Lake is not safe enough to create a speed skate track,” their announcement stated. They had planned a 50 km race on Feb. 21, 100 km and 5 km events on Feb. 22 and 25 and 10km events on Feb. 23. The new plan is to hold a one day event at Red Deer’s outdoor speed skating oval at the Golden Circle on Feb. 22. Races of 5, 10 and 25 km. are scheduled, according to their website. They’re also planning Kortebaan and sled races. Kortebaan is a 160
metre straight skate race while Prix Slee is a race involving wooden sleds with metal rails and sticks with spikes. Pond hockey cancelled The sixth annual Sylvan Lake Pond Hockey tournament, scheduled for Feb. 28 to Mar. 2, was cancelled last week by the Town of Sylvan Lake and event planning committees, stated Joanne Gaudet, the town’s communications officer, in a media release issued last Wednesday. Ron Lebsack, the town’s director of community services, has also “ordered town crews to cease maintenance of the Sylvan Lake ice surfaces and to close the provincial park gate effective immediately”. The decision was made following a recommendation from Sylvan Lake Fire Department. “The closure of the provincial park gate inhibits public vehicles from driving on and over an unsta-
ble ice surface,” stated Gaudet. “Due to above average snow accumulation and recent warm temperatures, the ice surface on the lake is not of quality or a safe enough depth for town staff or protective services to recommend activity on it.” Winterfest and Polar Dip The Polar Dip and other Winterfest activities next Saturday (Feb. 15) have been moved to Centennial Park. John Eastwood, recreation, parks and culture manager, said Tuesday night, the polar dip is going ahead, despite rumours to the contrary. They’re looking for a dunk tank in which to conduct the annual fundraiser which could see as many as 50 people plunge into chilly water. Among other activities planned in Centennial Park are a barbecue, hot chocolate and coffee, warm up tent, sleigh rides, mini golf, hockey shootout, face painting, snow painting, toy mountain, cardboard box
sled race and remote control car races. The day will begin with a pancake breakfast by Lions Club members at their hall on 50A Avenue. A Winterfest movie marathon takes place at the library, there’s a Farmers’ Market at the community centre, chili will be available at the Legion, Railside Bowl is hosting toonie bowl, Best Body Fitness has toonie rock climbing, Sylvan Lake Archives is holding an open house and there’s a free indoor skate at Incline Industries. The evening includes fireworks at 7 p.m. and a dance at the Legion at 8 p.m. (featuring Wise Choice). On the Family Day holiday Monday, Feb. 17, a free family swim takes place from 1-3 p.m. Ice race season cancelled Following others, Second Gear Club has cancelled the complete CMA Alberta ice racing series for the season “due to the extremely
poor ice conditions” throughout the province. That involves motorcycle, sidecar, ATV and side-by-side vehicles racing on oval or straight tracks on the ice. “We have been having a go with Mother Nature for the past few years with challenging ice conditions, rescheduled dates and locations,” said Rhonda Pechout in the announcement on the club’s Facebook page Jan. 26. “This year, even Lac La Biche is short of ice and having the same issues as other lakes we normally use. The main issue is the bulk of snow that is weighing down depths of ice ranging from 6-14 inches and insulating the ice preventing thickening. Water is being pushed up through holes and shorelines. Ice that exists is either slush or filled with snow.” They hope to be back in 2015 with a full schedule.
Australian teacher making the most of Sylvan Lake opportunity BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
tried skating and snowshoeing and are looking forward to planned trips to Lake Louise and Mexico. Inside the classroom, Jenkinson admits to still “learning the ropes”. With the exception of several cultural differences, however, she feels her schools here and in Australia are essentially the same. “It’s very similar to back home” she said. “It’s a good feeling to know that you can still come into a classroom on the other side of the world and still teach, and the kids know what you’re talking about.” One of the biggest differences, she noted, lies outside the classroom. “We don’t get to go and play outside because it’s too cold, whereas we don’t get to play outside back home because it’s too hot,” she said. “That’s a bit of a contrast.” She’s still dealing with some of the obstacles associated with moving to a new country — such as buying a car and applying for a credit card — but insists that she has so far enjoyed her time teaching here. “They’ve been very welcoming here at the school,” she said. “They’re very friendly.”
An Australian teacher and her family are quickly settling into life in Central Alberta where they will spend the next year as part of an international teacher exchange. Jill Jenkinson, who hails from Adelaide in Australia is teaching Grade 2 at C. P. Blakely School. She switched places with Tammy Burton, who now lives and teaches in Australia. Jenkinson arrived in Red Deer with her husband and three children on Dec. 27. Her husband is part of the exchange, and teaches at Innisfail High School, where he took up Mr. Burton’s post. Together, they are adjusting to their new lives in Canada, and making the most of the many opportunities here that are unavailable to them back home. “We’re totally enjoying it,” said Jenkinson. “We love the snow, and when we wake up and see our cars covered in snow, we’re very excited. When we see the snow falling outside the window, we just think it’s the bee’s knees.” Although there’s no snow back home, this isn’t their first experience with the white stuff. Three years ago, Jenkinson’s husband completed a teacher exchange in Thunder Bay, Ont., Sylvan Lake Seniors with the rest of the Association offers family in tow. Resources and trained “That was our kids’ volunteers to assist first experience with with applications snow, and they loved for: it,” said Jenkinson. “We like to get out there and do things, so we’re Alberta Seniors Benefit going to do lots of Special Needs Assistance for Seniors walking, and hopefully Dental/Optical Programs some cross-country skiing.” Education Property Tax Rebate They’ve already

Downtown on the cusp of a resurgence
Although we’ve been warned before to beware STEVE DILLS of the predictions of SYLVAN LAKE prognosticators who NEWS claim to have gathered evidence of future trends, we’re going to put ourselves in that realm this week. Sylvan Lake’s downtown core is on the upswing, we predict. A vision of a vibrant, walkable area full of activity will be realized in the next few years. One of the indicators is included in this week’s review of building permits during the past year. It indicates commercial construction in the downtown core surpassed other commercial areas of the community. Now, we agree, that was helped significantly by one major project which certainly plays a factor. The revitalization of the old Cobb’s AG Foods building into a multi-unit complex of commercial and office spaces accounted for $2 million of the $2.674 million included in 13 permits. While it played a factor in increasing the value of permits issued in the downtown area last year, we believe it’s going to be a strong contributor to a shake up in the business community, drawing tenants, office workers and shoppers. It’s interesting to note that going back in history,
before the day of supermarkets, Sylvan Lake’s main street was filled with small, specialty shops such as the butcher, baker and candle stick maker (well maybe not the last). And in some cases they were located in Cobb’s Block along side the general store. Combined with the new construction will be work in other areas undertaken by the town. The Centennial (50th) Street Design Development project, being completed by the town at a cost of $80,000, is reaching its final stages. Four schematic redevelopment concepts were presented to a focus group last year. Part of the idea is to improve the street while aligning it with changes in the Waterfront area. A full report is expected at the next council meeting Feb. 10. Another reason we predict increased growth and interest in our downtown core (which we suggest includes the Lakeshore Drive area) is the creation, under the leadership of the town’s Economic Development Officer Vicki Kurz, of a Business Recruitment Team. The goal of this group is “to provide guidance and advice on matters pertaining to recruitment of new businesses to town. It’s also involved in maintaining current businesses. With entrepreneurs, property owners, real estate professions, a banker, and chamber of commerce representative on the team, we expect great things from the work this group does in expanding the selection of goods and services available in Sylvan Lake.
Of course, there’s one other huge factor in change and improvement in our downtown. That’s the economy and the ability of those interested in creating the vision outlined to invest. We believe there’s a pent-up demand that’s going to quickly bubble to the surface and we’re going to see some interesting and intriguing projects proposed and completed in the near term. Yes, Sylvan Lake is well on its way to becoming a lively, attractive location for business. Particularly since we’re only a few short weeks away from warmer weather which will promote more foot traffic.

Fire leaves family of 17 homeless A fire starting at about 6 p.m. Saturday, caused the Harry Hilman family of the Marianne district to evacuate their home. The fire was discovered by one of the children who entered an upstairs room and found an electric wire smouldering. The family was fortunate in being able to remove most of their furniture and appliances from the home, as well
as some clothing. The first was mainly confined to the upper floor, however considerable damage was done to the lower floor Mr. and Mrs. Hilman, with some of their family, are now living at the home of Mr. Oscar Hilman at Sylvan Lake. The rest of their 15 children are with relatives and friends in the district and in town. To assist the family, an emergency fund has been started in town and district. Neighbours in the Marianne district have been conducting a canvass. Through the efforts of Sylvan Lake and Red Deer branches, Provincial Red Cross brought a supply of bedding and the children are being supplied with warm clothing and an emergency food hamper was provided.

Calkins called on MPs to support Sylvan’s Hockeyville bid BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Wetaskiwin MP Blaine Calkins rallied support for Sylvan Lake’s Kraft Hockeyville campaign in the House of Commons Tuesday afternoon. He used poetry to get his point across to Members of Parliament during their session and was greeted with cheers and applause at the end of his recitation. Here’s what he had to say: “I rise again in this house to again talk about hockey in a community that lies between Red Deer and Rocky Sylvan Lake’s plight is my subject of call Their arena collapsed under record snow fall
The old barn came down without much warning A very close call at one in the morning Many young children with no place to skate No stands to cheer from, so proud and so great A rink that is known for its great hockey camp Producing great players, some Stanley Cup champs Sutters and Morris to name a few, Ranford and Iginla have skated there too And now comes the task, not incredibly small How to rebuild, the cost will be tall Sylvan Lake’s spirit will not be defeated Fundraising has started, the job can be completed Mr. Speaker before my poem’s complete I do need to note that with no small feat Other towns and cities have provided support
Working together to help Sylvan Lake sport Thanks to Eckville, Clive, Blackfalds, Leduc, Red Deer, Rocky Mountain House, and Caroline too, Maskwacis, Bashaw, Spruce View and Innisfail, and Rimbey a friend just down the trail, But today I stand in support of this town For I played too in that building fell down What I ask for today is support from the Hill Vote for Sylvan Lake for Kraft Hockeyville.” To watch his performance check his YouTube video. The riding which Calkins represents encompasses the north end of Sylvan Lake at present, but with redistribution next year, he plans to run in Red Deer-Wolf Creek which will include the Town of Sylvan Lake.

More than a rink — without a fight that beautiful lady passed into the night BY KRIS LINDBERG SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
She was born that very year of 1972 as announcer Foster Hewitt’s words echoed loudly over the TV and radios, “They score! Henderson has scored for Canada!” We had just beat the Russians. As a nation we were proudly holding our flag high for our achievement against our adversaries that through a war that had run cold, it could no longer withstand the warmth from the joy our country felt, as we called a game our own. She stood awkwardly at first but as she grew and was raised with care everyone knew she was one special lady there. She began to have the understanding of our love for this game. She watched and learned with so many, some pushing chairs to start, others skated on their own, lovers holding hands and she wished she could try it just once as her love grew too. Her love for the game, the people and community was so engulfing that she was never lonely for long and even though she wished she could, she
knew in her heart she never would. As the years passed by she took comfort with the love that was inside her. Everyday they would come together as one, cheering, chanting, laughing and even crying, perhaps as someone scored their first goal — together they were a family. She found happiness as she aged by imagining that they were all there for her. She kept them safe and warm and nestled them close as they all grew both children and adults. People came from all around creating memories together that spanned generations. This fairy tale does not end well, for with age and time all things must end and after the last player left she said, “this is my time you can not chose mine!” Though she tried, she was too weak from all the years, so she yelled to let the last one know, that this was the hour, it was time to go. With a single cry she said her last goodbye and down she fell and as she drew her last cold breath, it was without a fight that the beautiful lady passed into the night.
We’re truly Hockeyville - A huge crowd gathered for a final photo
shoot behind the old arena where the collapsed roof is highly visible. Billed as a final “Sylvan Lake Arena Commemorative Salute Photo” session, people attending the event Tuesday afternoon were encouraged to wear hockey jerseys and wave hockey sticks as a final salute. STEVE DILLS

Students at École Steffie Woima Elementary School could be having fun climbing and playing on a brand new playground when they start school in September. Colleen Watson, chairman of the school’s parent advisory society and a member of the playground fundraising committee, said once funding is in place things should move along quickly. Approval has not yet been received for a matching $63,000 Community Facility Enhancement Program grant. “We’re still waiting on those funds,” she said. A decision as to the approval of the grant may not be revealed until the end of March. However, much progress has been made to come up

“Our passion is His presence, Our commitment is His will, Our pursuit is His way.”
THE SERVANT ALWAYS WINS by Pastor TJ Green Frontline Worship Center
God’s ways are not our ways…..but they should be. Jesus moved in a completely opposite way of culture that baffled everyone. He taught strange ideas to His followers like, “the least shall be the greatest,” “take the lowest seat at the table,” “wash peoples feet,” and “love your enemy.” Even how He came to earth seems so wrong. Here is the King of kings and Lord of lords who created the heavens and the earth and he comes as a helpless crying baby born in a manger surrounded by animals. No grand display of might or power, instead he showed up naked and helpless. Many didn’t believe He was the Messiah because He hadn’t conquered anything yet. You see, central to the idea of messiah was the government would be upon His shoulders. Yet Jesus’ joyful entrance into the city where it is prophesied that He would set up His kingdom was “meek and lowly and riding on a donkey”. He didn’t come in with an army and overthrow the government as so many people were expecting. He came in from the Mount of Olives through the temple gate. To me this so speaks of the ways of God. The way Jesus enters a city is not forcefully but the way

of peace. In the same fashion, Jesus captures our hearts with His gentleness and unfailing love. Meekness may look like weakness and sound like weakness but it’s actually a spiritual strength. When Jesus taught “The meek shall inherit the earth.” It wasn’t just a spiritual principal, Jesus was teaching them how to rule and take dominion. Jesus came to serve sinners. He never forced himself or his ways on anyone. He loved people unconditional. As followers of Christ lets dare to ask ourselves the tough questions. How can we do a better job of serving the world? Could it be that we have empowered the arguments by our loud objections and if we would have just come peacefully to serve, the issues would have long been laid to rest? Instead of protesting and complaining about our government lets serve it. Instead of protesting and complaining about homosexuality, abortion, and all the issues that seems so threatening, lets love unconditionally as Christ would. Lets stop fighting like the devil for the cause of Christ, and learn to wash feet. Love never fails and the servant always wins. 4308 - 50 Avenue 403-887-1401

with matching funds and the fundraising society is optimistic about having the playground completed this year. Watson said TD Bobcat has donated the groundwork for the project and Rona and Lafarge have agreed to supply 50 per cent of materials at no cost. “We are very grateful for their help. We also have a number of private donations.” Volunteers worked a casino to raise funds and letters of support have been received from the Town of Sylvan Lake and Chinook’s Edge School Division. “We have a fantastic team of people involved in this,” said Watson. The need for a new playground was determined a few years ago. “The school increased by 100 students last year and the two playgrounds it has now are in rough shape,” she said. Playground equipment from the existing playgrounds at Steffie Woima has been removed due to increased safety standards and increased repair costs. The new playground, which includes slides and climbing apparatus can accommodate about 130 youngsters. Once equipment is on site, it can be erected in five days. Donations for the playground will be gratefully accepted. For more information contact Colleen Watson at crw4@shaw.ca.

Town’s planning and development practices being examined BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The first phase of a review of the town’s planning and development department has been initiated following concerns voiced during last fall’s election. “During the municipal election campaign, we heard a lot of comments about standards that were too restrictive and development approvals that took too much time to approve,” said Mayor Sean McIntyre in a media release. “I’m confident that during this review we can work together to ensure a balance of supportive, high quality development in our community.” Many voters identified a “desire for a review of

surprised departing vice principal Glenn MacLeod in a secret farewell assembly last Thursday morning. Along with parents, family and representatives from Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, they commemorated MacLeod’s three-and-a-half years at the school with music, stories and tributes during the one-hour assembly in the school’s fine arts centre. “Wow, what a surprise,” said MacLeod. “Usually I have words, but I’m very emotional right now. It’s overwhelming.” MacLeod’s tenure with the school ended after he was transferred to École Camille J. Lerouge School in Red Deer, where he is reprising his role as vice principal. His replacement at Mother Teresa is Ken Meraw, former vice principal of Holy Family School in Red Deer, who enjoyed his first day on the job Tuesday. Principal Dorice Swensrude was one of several people who spoke during the assembly, and thanked MacLeod for his contributions to the school. “Thank you for all of the seeds that you have planted. Pursuits led to arrest of wanted man near Eckville BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
A man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant was arrested near Eckville after taking police on two pursuits which involved officers from several jurisdictions. Cody Feil, 26, of Red Deer, was wanted for being unlawfully at large since Dec. 12. He was located in the West Park area of Red Deer last Tuesday, but fled in a
stolen vehicle. As Feil continued out of the city, Sylvan Lake and Blackfalds RCMP members and Lacombe Police Service assisted Red Deer RCMP officers in locating him. Feil now faces additional charges of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, six counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, fail to stop or remain, three counts of failure to stop while being pursued, three counts of dangerous operation of a motor
vehicle, operating a motor vehicle while disqualified, resisting or obstructing a peace officer and mischief not exceeding $5,000, stated RCMP Cpl. Leanne Molzahn, in a news release. Several days before his arrest, RCMP had issued a request for the public’s assistance in locating Feil. He was described as “potentially dangerous; he has an extensive criminal history including flight, escaping from lawful custody and dangerous driving”.

She also received approval to solicit proposals from consultants to do the work. The money had previously been allocated to match a grant the town applied for under the Invest Canada Community Initiative program. The town was unsuccessful in that application which would have included “three critical components of investment readiness as a means to prepare Sylvan Lake for investment attraction on a global stage”. • agreed to amend dates and other information in the town’s Corporate Tourism Strategy 2013-18 and adopt the revisions.
During their regular meeting Jan. 27, Sylvan Lake councillors: • approved the first reading of bylaws and set public hearings dealing with two subdivisions. Proposed zoning redesignations in Crestview “will accommodate the developer’s ability to market a commercial site that maximizes frontage along 50 Street, provides for medium density residential options based on a cul-de-sac design; and cleans up parcel boundaries allowing for more municipal reserve contribution based on proposed subdivision boundaries,” wrote the town’s consultant, Matthew Pawlow of Parkland Community Planning Services. Across 50th Street, in Beacon Hill, Phase 6 requires land use amendments to covert land from urban reserve to medium lot residential, narrow lot general residential and public facility districts. Elks aiming to be men’s and women’s volunteer organization of choice BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Alberta Elks Association provincial president Leonard Shain visited Benalto Elks last Tuesday night, and provided information on the organization’s proposed new mission statement and vision. “The mission is to be a Canadian volunteer organization of men and women serving communities, and our vision is to be the volunteer organization of choice for men and women,” he said. “We’re presenting it to our membership because they have to vote on it in July, but we want feedback as to whether we’re going in the right direction.” The new mission statement reflects a significant departure from the organization’s origins. Founded in 1912, it began as a fraternal organization, and only began accepting female members in 1998. While its “boys club” image still remains with some people, the organization today is as open as it’s ever been, according to Jim Merriman, treasurer of Elks’ No. 404 Benalto Lodge. “I think the old school thinking about the Elks is that it was more of a closed fraternity thing, but they’re trying to get the vision out there that it’s not like that,” he said. “It’s open to everybody, and anybody’s welcome.” Members must be at least 16 years of age in order to join the organization. According to Shain, “All they have to do is want to make a difference”. Merriman said recruiting young people has been somewhat challenging in the past. He hopes that changes in the way the organization is perceived will encourage more to consider joining
in the future. “It’s hard to get young members on board, so any way that could possibly work, that would be a good thing.” Through various fundraisers and initiatives, Elks across Canada raise money that’s either contributed to the organization’s provincial and national charities, or put into community projects such as the construction of playgrounds. Fundraisers held by Benalto Lodge, such as the annual turkey supper held every fall, allow its members to put money back into their own community. Money from the supper is given to Christmas Bureaus in Eckville and Sylvan Lake, while recipients of other funds raised include clubs, youth groups and schools in Benalto, Eckville, Sylvan Lake and Spruce View. Such donations reinforce the Elks’ position as a community-oriented organization, according to Shain. “When a lodge raises money in their community, the lodge decides where it goes,” he said. “Even though we have a provincial charity and a national charity, they’re not obligated to support it, and if they have more important projects in their community, then that’s where we want them to focus their money, that’s where they raised it.” Benalto Elks Lodge currently has about 30 members, who meet at the community hall on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 8 p.m. Past exalted ruler Doug Hambly hopes to see numbers increase at future meetings. “We’re always recruiting,” he said. “If somebody is interested, that’s perfect.” He encourages community-minded individuals to consider joining. “Community is the biggest word — we’re there to service the community, help other organizations in the community and help people in the community. “We’re completely community oriented.”

Atom B2 Lakers thanked their Innisfail hosts SUBMITTED SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Sylvan Lake Atom B2 Lakers were able to hold their home game against Innisfail Flyers thanks to the support of the Flyers and Innisfail Minor Hockey Association. The Lakers donned their white home jerseys and held a ceremony of thanks Sunday morning in Innisfail. It consisted of the players lining up to give gifts to their opposition as well as for a ceremonial puck drop. Coach Ryan Lucas presented the Flyers and association with a poster which included the team’s photo against a backdrop of three pictures of the arena, one of the front, another of mist rising from the surface and the top one of the collapsed roof. It was signed by the players and reads, “Thank you for your support in our time of need!” Immediately after, both teams gathered together holding ‘Kraft Hockeyville Go Sylvan Lake Go’,
banners to capture the moment. Guest speaker Graham Parsons thanked the community and association. He said over 20 games were organized and played in surrounding communities during the weekend due to the loss of Sylvan’s arena and encouraged all the fans to go online and vote for our Sylvan’s Kraft Hockeyville campaign. The Atom Lakers appeared fired up after the ceremony and went on to shut down the Flyers in an 8-0 victory. After the hand shake, the Lakers rallied to centre ice and raised their sticks in a thank you to the crowd and to signify a win for their arena. Special thanks to Graham Parsons for attending and all the hard work he is doing behind the scenes to make things run smoothly. Also to Dianne Womacks and Tracey Sapach at TS Photos for the design, photos and hard work on short notice and to Kris Lindberg for organizing and announcing the event and game.
