The community is rallying around a 32-year-old Victoria father-to-be Dylan Benson, after his wife suffered a brain hemorrhage while pregnant with the couple’s child. Robyn Benson, 32, was declared brain dead by doctors on Dec. 29, but her unborn child continues to grow as Robyn remains on life support. Doctors hope the child can reach 34 weeks – seven weeks away – before delivering him through caesarian section, according to Dylan’s blog, misterbenson.com. “Iver is still growing in the womb and amazingly things are still remaining healthy as far as my wife’s body goes,” Dylan wrote in a Jan. 28 blog post. A youcaring.com fundraising drive, set up by Dylan, has far surpassed its $36,000 goal, the equivalent of his wife’s annual salary. Family in need after devastating house fire

A trust fund has been set up to raise money for a family left homeless after a house fire on Feb. 1. Both parents escaped the fire with their son, 9, and daughter, 3. The father sustained smoke inhalation while saving the children. The family had no renters insurance and are having to rebuild from scratch as they look for a new home to rent. Police recommend charges in alleged sexual assault of two 13-year-old girls Two boys, ages 15 and 16, could face charges of sexual assault after an incident involving two 13-year-old girls in Oak Bay. Oak Bay and Saanich police are recommending charges against the two high school boys after allegations of sexual assault at an Oak Bay residence in late January. “We expect to hear from Crown (counsel) in March,” said

Saanich police Sgt. Steve Eassie. “Charges are pending.” The minors, both Victoria-area high school students, were released on conditions. Eassie could not provide further details, but said the boys are not known to police. He said the case highlights the importance of educating those entering their teen years about engaging in sexual acts. “It’s important for parents and others in the community to have those conversations with young people,” Eassie said. reporter@vicnews.com

An independent analysis of the Capital Regional District’s sewage treatment project proves that delays will only cost taxpayers more money, says the CRD’s sewage committee chair. The CRD’s Seaterra project is already $50 million over budget – at $830 million – due to inflation and set to rise further, according to a new report from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. But stakeholders say the report only makes a stronger case to move forward with construction as quickly as possible. “Seaterra has stressed very strongly that delay means greater costs,” said Geoff Young, chair of the CRD’s core area liquid waste management committee. “Postponing the project and having construction costs increase means the (one-third) fixed contribution of the provincial government will be worth less and less the longer we wait.” Last year, an arms-length commission was established to oversee Seaterra and ensure the project stays within its $783-million budget. The Taxpayers Federation funded an independent analysis of Seaterra after Greater Victoria businesses expressed concern about the “nebulous” estimated costs of the project, said Jordan Bateman, the advocacy group’s B.C. director. The CRD’s estimated costs to homeowners are likely underestimated by hundreds of dollars during the project’s initial five-year building phase, he said. Further complicating the financial outlook is a recent decision by Colwood to study opting out of Seaterra to build its own sewage treatment facility. The current sewage treatment project includes a wastewater treatment plant planned for McLoughlin Point in Esquimalt and a biosolids and incineration facility at Hartland landfill in Saanich. Both projects are in the early stages of tendering, with an estimated project completion date of 2018. dpalmer@vicnews.com

Mostly what I’ve been doing is trying to boost the criticisms coming from people within Russia itself,” said Daphne Shaed, Camosun College Student Society’s women’s director and community activist for LGBT rights. “I don’t think boycotting is the right way to go … we’ll take away the platform the gay and LGBT community has.” While some athletes are taking a stand for the human rights traditionally upheld in Canada, Shaed feels government and corporations should still be held accountable. “What can happen now is the people in Russia can be given the spotlight to talk about what’s going on on the ground out there,” Shaed said. “What

we should be doing is heavily criticizing the countries that are not standing up to the governing bodies.” Social media, despite the time difference and geographical divide, will provide opportunities to have those discussions, she said. “We can talk about it in our own social networks. Dr. Jeffrey Thompson is a graduate of the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science class of 2013. Dr. Thompson grew up in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island where he attended the University of PEI earning a Bachelor degree of Science in Chemistry. Dr. Thompson has attended the Academy of EyeCare Excellence in Fort Worth, Texas and received specialty contacts lens training in Jacksonville, Florida. As an intern at a veteran’s hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, Dr. Thompson received extensive training in the management and treatment of ocular disease and has a particular interest in pediatrics, contact lenses and low vision. Dr. Thompson was drawn to the island due to its active lifestyle and is excited to join the community and see all of what Vancouver Island has to offer. While not in the office he enjoys golfing, biking as well as coaching and playing hockey.

Fassbender said the latest ruling could potentially cost the B.C. government more than $1 billion, which he called “completely unaffordable for taxpayers.” But the appeal will focus on Justice Susan Griffin’s interpretation of constitutional rights in union negotiations. “Governments have to be able to govern,” Fassbender said, adding that no other province has such restrictions on school organization. “Most importantly, if the real goal is to benefit students, decades of academic research has shown that blankest reductions in class size are of little benefit,” he said. B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Jim Iker estimated that 6,600 teachers would have to be hired to bring B.C. class sizes up to the Canadian average. “We want to negotiate a deal at the bargaining table,” Iker said. “We hope that the government comes and bargains with us in good faith – that’s so important – but we all know that to achieve an agreement, government has to bring the necessary funding to make that deal happen.” The dispute revolves around the government’s unilateral removal of class size and support staff rules from the BCTF contract in 2002. In her first ruling in 2011, Griffin gave the government a year to remove the offending legislation and negotiate class size and specialist teacher support as a working condition for teachers. Griffin’s second ruling came Jan. 28, ordering $2 million in damages to be paid to the BCTF for what she described as bargaining in bad faith, and striking down parts of the latest legislation. Fassbender said talks over the past year have included class size and specialist support. “We’ve increased supports for students with special needs, including a 36 per cent increase in the number of full-time education assistants,” he said. On Tuesday Fassbender said the ministry’s “learning improvement fund,” established after Griffin’s first ruling, dedicated $210 million toward the disputed class supports. It funded 500 new teachers, 400 new special education assistants and increased hours for another 7,400 assistants, he said. NDP education critic Rob Fleming (VictoriaSwan Lake) said the government shouldn’t be challenging the court ruling. “The onus is on the government to put out an olive branch to the teaching profession,” he said. editor@saanichnews.com

Games glitz a thin cover The Olympics are a strange beast. In the lead-up to the Games, we focus a lot of our attention on the host country and how well we think it will welcome the world. We talk about how prepared it is to host a flood of athletes, sports fans and international media in its spit-shined venues, and we learn about the social and political problems unique to that country. Then the Opening Ceremony begins and we don’t think about location again until we’re comparing their spectacle to previous host countries. The Olympics are, for all intents and purposes, an event that can be replicated anywhere there are enough sport venues and hotel rooms to accommodate the events and additional people. With that in mind, why, then, does the International Olympic Committee bestow the honour of hosting the Games on a country embroiled in human rights controversies? Any number of other countries – including bid finalists Salzburg, Austria and Pyeongchang, South Korea – could have earned the hosting duties. We remain deeply troubled by Russia’s newly implemented anti-gay laws, which allow that country to arrest or fine anyone who “promotes nontraditional sexual relations.” The IOC is governed by the Olympic Charter, which completely prohibits discrimination. IOC president Thomas Bach has repeatedly said he’s been assured by President Vladimir Putin that Russia will respect the Charter while the Games are happening. The fact those assurances are necessary should have been reason enough not to award Russia the Winter Games. But with the competition already underway, that’s a moot point. Instead, we urge our fellow Canadians to continue having an open dialogue about these injustices through the course of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Take pride in Canada’s athletes as we watch them perform in the coming weeks, but don’t get so swept up that the discrimination being perpetrated in the host country is forgotten. Canada’s notion of true patriot love must extend beyond our borders. The pride we feel on home soil from being glorious and free should be felt by the citizens of every country, especially at the Olympics, when we’re highlighting fellowship among all.

Pipeline hearings a right for residents Last week, I applied to participate in the National Energy Board review of Kinder Morgan’s proposed Trans Mountain pipeline. However, I do not know whether the NEB will accept my application. The board has announced they will only accept submissions on this proposal from British Columbians who are “directly affected” by the project and tankers or have “relevant expertise.” Having grown up on the West Coast, I take issue with that assertion. Harvesting from the ocean is a vital part of my culture as a coastal person. I was taught how to catch crabs and collect shellfish as a child. My family still enjoys crabs caught off Sidney, clams from the Gulf Islands and fish caught right off Clover Point in Victoria. Sharing these experiences with my six-year-old son is very important to me. If there is an oil spill, all coastal residents stand to lose our ability to safely engage in these activities. Oil tankers on our delicate and unpredictable coast threaten salmon-bearing rivers and the wildlife and communities that depend on them, and will directly affect my family and I. As citizens of a democracy, we need to speak up and demand that our politicians take action on climate change. At some point, we lost our connection to our representatives. They don’t hear what the people they represent are saying. Many Canadians agree that climate change should be the top priority of the government. Yet, how many environmental bills have been shot down? Will they shoot down the Climate Change Accountability Act again? Is this what they call representing their constituency? Like (climate change activist group) Citizens Climate Lobby, we should each reach out to our politicians and ask them to be serious about implementing environmental policies. Tell them that if they are truly representing their constituency, they need to take action now. No more stalling. No more delaying. No more misinformation. Make it happen. It’s your job. I am delighted that various areas of Greater Victoria and Sidney will benefit from the production of Gracepoint, a remake of the highly popular British show Broadchurch. However, please tell me there will be a different ending – a different murderer. The main reason Broadchurch was so successful in the UK, apart from superb acting and photography, was that it was a genuine whodunnit. Nobody guessed who the murderer was until the very last episode. Now that we all know (or soon will from friends who cannot keep a secret) who the murderer is, just what is the point? The great cast includes Chris Cooper, Sam Shepard, Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis, Ewan McGregor, and Dermot Mulroney. ★★★½ DALLAS BUYERS CLUB -(Odeon) Matthew McConaughey has latterly gone from laughing stock to leading actor, and is currently an Oscar fave for his role in this true-life 1980s-era story of Ron Woodroof, a redneck, homophobic rodeo rider from Texas who finds out he has contracted AIDS from wild living. Given only weeks to live, Woodroof finds out about the experimental drug AZT and comes alive as a drugsmuggling AIDS activist, helping not just himself but many other sufferers. Co-star Jared Leto is also nominated, for best supporting actor. FROZEN -(SilverCity/Westshore) As a prelude to winter comes this appealing Disney animated tale about a brave woman who sets out to rescue a kingdom trapped in eternal winter. arts@mondaymag.com Although neither gender comes off well in That Awkward Moment, it’s definitely the men who have more apologizing to do. Better make that boy-men, as this is yet another bromance comedy – think Friends, but with more dick jokes – that features commitment-phobic 20-something guys wallowing in the shallows of hook-up culture. Awkward is the fairy tale of three best buds who live in New York, but seemingly many miles from reality. First there’s Jason (Zac Efron), a smooth operator who has just met the rather perfect Ellie (Imogen Poots) but can’t exactly figure out how she can be made to fit into his score-then-move-on lifestyle. Then we have Daniel (Miles Teller), a sarcastic slacker who has somehow persuaded a sexy gal pal named Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis) to act as his “wing man” and help him pick up pliable ladies in bars. When these two suddenly start crushing on each other, predictable complications ensue. Finally we have Mikey (Michael B. Jordan), a lonely doctor who got married young and whose gorgeous wife doesn’t seem to love him anymore. All that’s left is for the director to add alcohol, stir in lots of crass jokes of the sitcom variety, and then have our immature protagonists embarrass themselves repeatedly before achieving a few feel-good insights by movie’s end. Awkward and derivative, this romcom by first-time writer-director Tom Gormican aspires ineffectually to being a latter-day Jerry Maguire. The performances are fine, sure, but in between the forced laughs you will keep asking yourself why these smart women are so ready to settle for such dismal dudes. And Gormican deserves to be spanked for exhuming the cliché of the disgraced ex-lover who wins back his girlfriend by making an elaborate apology to her in front of a large audience. From rather ordinary to rather extraordinary Tampa, Florida – Being the best at something is an achievement, and doing it repeatedly is impressive. The Honda Civic’s 16-year streak as the best selling passenger car in Canada is nothing short of astounding. For the introduction the 2014 Civic, Honda chose usually sunny and hot Tampa, to introduce their latest update. It was sunny but anything from hot, with overnight temperatures near freezing. Honda has been improving the Civic continuously since the 7th generation model was introduced as a 2012 model. Last year, for 2013, they updated the styling, handling and interior of the 2013 model and now for 2014 they are at it again. Looks The styling focus for 2014 is on the coupe. Roughly 15 per cent of all Civics are sold as a coupe, the most dominant player in the small coupe market. Last year, this sedan received updates to the front and rear styling to help make it look more upscale and sophisticated, and this year the coupe gets a similar update to the front and back, but the changes are meant to provide a sportier look with a bit more aggression. The most aggressive version of both

The big change is the introduction of an inhouse continuously variable transmission (CVT), replacing the old 5-speed automatic. This actually makes this little car more drivable and might be the best CVT on the market. The car snaps away from a stop and cruises with ease on the highway, with quick changes

in the gear ratio that helps mimic a conventional automatic design. In addition, there is a sport mode and paddle shifters on the steering wheel to help liven things up. Honda has done a first rate job here and their efforts have been rewarded with a six per cent improvement in city fuel economy and an overall drop from 6.2L/100km combined to 6.0L, something very hard to do with such a small car. The driving dynamics of the Civic has always been very good due to a fully independent suspension and willing engine. The 143hp is a nice match for this car and the CVT is a great complement. The 5-speed manual is a blast to drive but it could use a 6th gear on the highway, as the high-revving engine can get noisy. The steering is crisp and the car overall instills a high level of confidence. Verdict Honda admits that their Civic might not be the top choice in every reason to buy a compact car but they are near the top in all categories. From fuel economy to reliability, resale value, cost of ownership and sportiness this car is a good choice. The many improvements made to the car over the past three-model-years, has taken the Civic from rather ordinary to rather extraordinary. They know how to make a good, solid, reliable car and for 2014 things just a little bit more interesting. Channeling your inner teenager in the snow

Picture this: You’re a teenager with a driver’s license, your wealthy parents have left you alone for the day and there has just been a huge snowfall. Your parents decided to take the SUV and the Porsche Carrera 4S is sitting all by its lonesome in the garage. All your friends are busy so you’ll need to make your own fun today. But how? The key to this stellar coupe, which generally remains under armoured guard, somehow surfaces. Then you hear a voice calling your name. You look around and wonder if you’re imagining things or if the milk you drank for breakfast had expired. You look down at the key fob and it is speaking to you. Through its German accent you decipher words like, “traction control off,” “sliding sideways,” “car control,” and the best of all, “you won’t get in trouble.” Then giddiness overcomes your body. Your eyes widen. Your smile is uncontrollable.

Before you know it you’re nestled cozily in the heated sport driver’s seat, looking where you want to go and having the time of your life; sliding sideways on a snow and ice track in a $140,000 sports car. Life is wunderbar. The best part about this teenage dream is that it’s not a teenage dream. It’s a reality. For those wanting to learn car control on a designated ice/snow track, it’s entirely possible thanks to Porsche’s Camp4 training school.

The track’s location is less than a couple of hours drive outside of Montreal, Quebec at Mecaglisse. It’s a playground for the German automaker’s, rear-wheel drive 911 Carrera S and Cayman, along with the allwheel drive 911 Carrera 4S. You’ll have the opportunity to drive all three vehicles in various parts of the facility. Whether you are learning how to control over- and

under-steer on the oval, or learning how to appropriately kick the back end out by blipping the throttle at the slalom, chances are, you’ll have a grin on your face the whole time. And if you spin out, you just keep going. The program commences with a driver’s briefing and drivers are introduced to their instructors. Proper seating position is

explained and then it’s time to hit the track. Exercises are done with two people to each car, and each Porsche is equipped with radios that are linked together. That way, the instructor can talk to you and give you pointers while they observe what’s going on. Sometimes you get praise. Sometimes you get constructive criticism. It’s just part of the process.

Classic trucks of the screen Vintage pickups and SUVs are among the hottest things in the collector car world. Not surprisingly, they are also popular on the big and small screen. Here are five fine examples. 1. 1973 Ford F-250 (The Blues Brothers): After stiffing the proprietor of Bob’s Country Bunker on a huge bar tab, Jake and Elwood Blues take off in the Bluesmobile with “The Good Ole Boys” – the country and western act that they’d impersonated at said bar – in hot pursuit. Love the shot of two angry musicians in costume glaring out the front windows of the camper shell, just before the truck winds up on its side. 2. 1967 Ford Bronco (Green Acres): The much-loved CBS

comedy featured a thennew red 1967 Ford Bronco as the official vehicle of scatter-brained county agent Hank Kimball, usually seen driven around Hooterville and the Douglas farm (minus doors and top). For most of its run, Green Acres was sponsored by the Ford Motor Company, so the Bronco’s frequent appearances were no surprise. 3. 1972 Chevrolet C-10 (Dazed and Confused): The 1993 Richard Linklater high school cult classic, set in the mid-1970s, featured what appeared to be a 1972 Chevy C-10 pickup in Cheyenne trim. It was driven by paddle-wielding upper-classman Benny O’Donnell (played by Cole Hauser), who freshmen

Walker drove this very special Ford pickup. Produced by Ford’s Special Vehicles Team, the 1999 Lightning

featured a supercharged 5.4-litre V-8 that produced 360 hp. It was used as a parts getter in the first of the Fast and Furious movies. 5. 1973 Ford F-100 (The Dukes of Hazzard): Yeah, it’s a shock, there were pickup trucks featured in the Dukes of Hazzard. Uncle Jesse always seemed to have a semi-ratty white Ford pickup. Most of the time it was a ’73 F-100 but in early episodes, he could be seen with a 1968 Ford stepside pickup and in later ones, a late 1970s F-250. PCS Pacers pack basketball punch Strange as it may sound, provincial championships are somewhat old hat for the Pacific Christian School Pacers senior girls basketball team. Setting aside their four B.C. championship titles in open A and AA level tournaments over the years, the Pacers had yet to win the B.C. Christian Secondary Schools Athletic Association title – until last weekend. The Saanich team captured its first banner in the highly competitive Christian field with a come-from-behind 68-65 win over perennial strength Abbotsford Christian in last Saturday’s final in Surrey. “Me and my Grade 12 friends on the team, we’re super excited to get a banner,” said tournament MVP and pacers point guard, Hannah Thompson. She was one of three graduating players honoured at a pennantraising ceremony held before

a Tuesday city league game at Pacific Christian. The Pacers, who went 3-0 at the tournament, led for most of the final but fell behind by nine points late in the fourth quarter. Led by Kat Candell (25 points) in the backcourt and Thompson (17 pts.)up front, PCS went on a 14-2 run to cap the victory. Down 65-62 with less than a minute to go, the Pacers got a baseline three-pointer from Candell to tie the game. After a stop at the other end of the court, Thompson stole the ball and raced downcourt to hit a layup. “It was a little bit surreal, but it’s an awesome story,” said PCS co-coach John Stewart. “It was neat to see it all unfold.” The Pacers, currently second in the city AA league, set their sights on the playoffs, which begin with the Lower Island tournament at Pacific Christian on Feb. 14 and 15.

Of the 18 Falcon athletes who made the trip, four won gold all-around medals for cumulative point totals. They included Emma Olenick in P1 level open (15-over), Emma Longbottom in P2 novice (age 13-14), Adelene Buchanan in P2 open and Emily Schmidt in P3 novice. Each athlete earned various medals in their respective individual events to capture top spot overall in their category. Among other Falcon gymnasts collecting medals, Mia Butcher won gold in P2 Tyro (age 11-12) on vault and uneven bars; Emily Lyall (P2 Novice) grabbed gold on bars and silver in floor exercise and Makena Spanier (P3 Open) earned bronze in floor, bars, vault and beam. In P3 novice, Kiana Pheiffer won bronze on vault. Looking for a detached home but don’t have enough money to make it work? For people considering becoming a landlord, there are numerous options around Greater Victoria for mortgage helper suite. The range of suites is as varied as the homes they are part of – they run from hastily converted basements to full-feature accommodation designed and built to the B.C. building code, a.k.a. “legal suites.” In 2010, apartment dwellers Jennifer and Keith Souter found what they were looking for in the Parkdale section of the Westhills neighbourhood in Langford. The sprawling new development offered homes with various configurations of secondary suites. “With the income suite we were able to look at a full single-family dwelling,” Jennifer says. “That was appealing, to be on our own and not have to be part of a strata.” While the couple were thrilled to be building equity, the living situation was not ideal, she says. The Souters were upstairs while their tenants took the main floor. “We have a dog and we

You’re always conscious of someone sharing that space,” she says. They began looking for a housing setup that better suited their needs and found it – about 500 yards away. In July 2012 they moved into a coach house at Westhills, one with a suite above a detached garage. “We almost never see our tenant, except at rent time,” Souter says. “We feel like we’re completely separate.” Buying in a new neigh-

bourhood tailored for all manner of families – from young people breaking into the market to couples needing close accommodation for elderly parents – is just one example of how to solve the need for a suite. Realtor Kevin Sing has seen numerous such situations in his 14-plus years in the industry. While there is generally always some financial necessity to such transactions, he says, it’s not always about the mortgage helper. “(Often) it’s about helping

family,” he says, noting suite residents can be at either end of the age spectrum, from college-age children to elderly parents. “It remains a pretty significant reason for looking for a home with a suite. Usually we’re looking for a nice suite, usually above ground.” Regardless of the reasons for searching out homes with suites, buyers should ask their realtor about the municipality’s stance on secondary accommodation, Sing says. recognized the need for – and existence of – secondary suites as a way of providing affordable accommodation. And for the most part, non-registered suites are not a target for bylaw enforcement, Sing says. “Parties and parking” remain the two most common reasons people renting out suites in neighbourhoods run afoul of bylaw enforcement officers. For buyers who need the rental income to help pay their mortgage, the legal status of a suite and the complaint history are worth asking about, he adds. “If they’re relying on that income and their comfort zone is not to have to deal with a bylaw officer down the road, they probably should be looking at something that is legal or perhaps rethink their financial situation.” As with homes themselves, location is important to tenants. “It’s good to be close to a bus route, say, no more than two buses into UVic or Camosun or Royal Roads (University),” Sing says. A short walk to amenities is also appealing. While checking out prospective tenants is part of their due diligence, Souter enjoys the financial freedom the suite offers them. Not to mention the fact they’ve become part of a group of people in similar situations in the neighbourhood. “I love it, all of our friends are there,” she says. ddescoteau@vicnews.com
