Baker Street Mall to become medical centre The downtown Cranbrook complex has been bought by an affiliate of New Dawn Developments
SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff
Cranbrook’s Baker Street Mall will become a one-stop professional medical centre opening later this year. New Dawn Developments has formed an affiliat-
ed business to purchase the mall in downtown Cranbrook which has been under utilized since Giant Tiger closed in December 2012. While plans are still being confirmed, the 55,000 square foot Baker Street Profession-
al Centre will contain two family practice clinics, a physiotherapy practice and a pharmacy. There will be space in the clinics to bring another four or five doctors to the community.
“We are very excited about the redevelopment of the Baker Street Mall and are actively working on securing tenants for the currently vacant spaces,” said Chad Jensen, president of New Dawn and the Baker Street Profes-
sional Centre. “This project will bring together various practices within the healthcare community, along with retail spaces focused on healthcare.” Jensen said negotiations to purchase the mall began last April, and the developer took possession last week, on January 31, 2014. Renovations will begin as soon as city permits are in place and the first stage is expected to open in summer 2014. The location was chosen because it is close to both downtown and the regional hospital, Jensen explained.
“The development provides ample parking and full accessibility, with close proximity to public transit and the hospital,” he said. The new health centre will help revitalize this part of downtown Cranbrook, he went on. “As our city and our healthcare industry expand, Baker Street Professional Centre will play a valuable role in ensuring adequate facilities for doctors, specialists and related healthcare providers,” said Jensen. More details about the development will be reported by the Townsman as they are determined.

Cranbrook council found that the cost of removing snow banks from city streets would quickly become expensive, as would the use of snow gates to clear snow from in front of driveways. At the Monday, Feb. 3 regular meeting, city staff outlined the costs, benefits and disadvantages of the additional snow removal services. The street clearing information came as a result of
a council inquiry on behalf of a resident. CAO Wayne Staudt explained that, based on the city estimates, plowing snow to the middle of the road, then using a snow blower to load it into a truck and haul it away would cost $462,913 for every centimetre of snow that falls on the 198 kms of city streets. Staudt said it would take 609 hours to perform the task.

Mesa Grove residents allowed home S a l ly M ac D o n a l d Townsman Staff
Residents of Mesa Grove trailer park were allowed to return home Wednesday night after a fire forced evacuation of the property. Fifty-two homes lost power on Tuesday, Feb. 4 when a fire took out the trailer park’s electrical panel.
Power has been restored to the Cranbrook trailer park damaged in a fire
Because of the extreme cold Tuesday night, residents were evacuated, with many choosing to take advantage of an emergency shelter set up at the Heritage Inn. Electrical repair crews, including staff of BC Hydro,
worked Wednesday to restore power to the trailer park. Repairs were completed late on Wednesday afternoon, according to the City of Cranbrook. Residents were allowed to return to their homes after 6 p.m. on Wednesday,
Feb. 5. It’s thought that the fire was caused by the electrical panel overheating. “Investigators suspect that the extreme cold and a very likely heavy use of heating appliances, including space heaters, caused the
panel to overload and catch fire. However, a definitive cause cannot be determined,” said Chris Zettel, Cranbrook’s corporate communications officer. Residents were asked to be cautious when using power in their home to
avoid bringing the power down again. “The possibility does exist that as these homes warm up, some may experience flooding due to frozen pipes thawing. Those residents who may experience flooding due to frozen pipes must contact their home insurance company,” said Zettel.
CMH picks up travel award EK-based heli-skiing company recognized for responsible tourism
S ally Mac D on al d Townsman Staff
Local heli-skiing business Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) has been honoured with an industry award. CMH Heli-Skiing and Summer Adventures received the prestigious Responsible Travel and Tourism Forum Leadership Award last week at a special ceremony in Toronto. The award was presented to Dave Butler, CMH’s Cranbrook-based director of sustainability, who is
also president of the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce. “We’re especially pleased to receive the Responsible Travel and Tourism Forum Leadership Award as it is recognition for the hard work of our entire CMH staff to make a difference in the world, while providing amazing experiences to our guests,” said Butler. “And it’s great encouragement to continue our ongoing journey toward sustainability.” The award is presented by Baxter Travel Media and was spon-
sored by Air Canada. It recognizes a travel or tourism organization that has “demonstrated commitment to socially, economically, and environmentally responsible practices.” It can be awarded to a tour operator, hotel, resort or tourism board. This year, CMH was given the award because of its sustainable practices, many of which have been practiced for its entire 50year history. CMH’s environmental initiatives include a project to ensure used skis don’t end up in
landfills, and a commitment to sustainable construction and energy efficiency. It was also recognized for community outreach, such as its support of local food banks and its adventure-based therapy programs that bring local teenagers back to nature. CMH describes itself as “stewards of the mountains on which it operates and the communities where its staff live, work and play.” Offering heli-adventures since 1965, CMH is the world’s oldest and
City sticking to usual snow removal procedure Continued from page 1 With an average annual snowfall of 141cm between 2007 and 2011, snow would need to be removed 14 times over a winter season at an annual cost of $6.5 million. “As you can see there are significant costs associated with that, probably beyond our financial abilities,” Staudt said. “So it’s not likely we’ll be doing that.”
He noted the other issue was the volume of snow which would need to be transported and piled in a large landsite, something the city doesn’t currently possess. City staff estimated that the average annual snowfall would amount to 4.2 million cubic metres for the 198 km of streets. The current area used to accommodate snow cleared from the roads
is only 8,400 square metres. Staudt said that snow fences are a useful tool in the removal of snow and prevent the windrow from ending up in driveways. “But of course there are significant costs with this,” he said. “When it snows, one of our biggest problems is cars parked on the road. If we could get all the vehicles off the road when it snows, that

would facilitate snow removal and would avoid some of these issues people have, including that parked vehicle being plowed in.” He said the city appreciates when people move their vehicles off the street after a heavy snowfall. He said while snow gates likely wouldn’t be brought forward by staff as an option for 2014, it could be an option for 2015 or beyond.

Nelson rescuers help skier at Kootenay Pass S a m Van S c h i e Nelson Star
Nelson Search and Rescue helped evacuate an injured backcountry skier at Kootenay Pass on Monday night. A 26-year-old woman visiting the area from Idaho had broken her leg while skiing with a group of friends out of the Ripple Ridge cabin, south of Kootenay Pass summit along Highway 3A. The group was quite a ways out from the cabin when the woman was injured. One member of their party went to the highway to call for help, while the rest fashioned a makeshift sled to get her back to the cabin, about three kilometres from the highway. Just after 6 p.m. on February 3, Nelson Search and Rescue received a call about the incident from the Creston detachment, which doesn’t have its own winter team to work in avalanche terrain.
Eight Nelson volunteers drove the hour to the pass, bringing with them skis and an offroad UTV (utility task vehicle) for quick access to the cabin. Lou Coletti, the Nelson search manager on site, said his group made it to Ripple Ridge sometime between 9 and 10 p.m., about the same time as the skiers towing the injured woman. “We did some first aid, and put a splint on her leg… and brought her out to the highway with the UTV,” Coletti explained, noting some members also helped retrieve her ski gear that had been left on the mountain. The woman was doing well when they reached the highway at about 10:45 p.m. and, Coletti said, the party opted to take her back to the United States for medical care. They drove through the night to Sandpoint, ID, and reached the hospital around 2 a.m.

Reporters, book theft and the Civil War
O
n February 13, 1961, members of the United States Congress felt their collective blood begin to boil. An emergency meeting had been called, and as they rushed into the House of Representatives, each member was given a copy of that morning’s New York Times. Among the headlines begging for attention that morning, one stood out among all others: “Providing A Library For The Southern Confederacy.” “It is ascertained that,” the accompanying article read, “in addition to the other frauds perpetrated by the seceding Members of Congress, they have taken from the Congressional Library — which is, probably, the best in this country, containing many books which cannot be obtained elsewhere — some of the most valuable volumes in the whole collection.” Recent events — which included the proposed eradication
of slavery, a new president, and the threat of civil war which was ripping what was left of their country apart — had exhausted Congress to a point to which this latest news should have broken them completely. Yet for some reason, each member who attended that morning’s meeting took the book theft as a personal affront; reenergized, they called for an immediate investigation. Charles Coffin Jewett, chief librarian of the newly opened Smithsonian, did something only a librarian (trust me) would ever think of doing. He went to the library to see if the books were actually missing. The library was locked the first few times he tried to visit, and when it was finally open, he found the circulation clerk looking so mean and surly that he couldn’t bring himself to speak to him. The next step was to interview Henry Pang-

The Rocky Mountain District of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is creating its list of registered Equipment for Hire in the East Kootenay Service Area for the fiscal year 2014/2015, which begins April 1, 2014. This area includes the United States border south at Kingsgate and Roosville, west at Yahk, east to the Alberta border and north to Brisco on Highway 95. All individuals or companies registered this past year through the District Office in Cranbrook will be receiving invitations to re-register their equipment for the coming fiscal year by mail by the end of February. Any individuals or companies who were not registered in 2013, but wish to have their equipment listed, are hereby invited to contact the District Office, either in person or by phone, to obtain the appropriate registration forms. Note that while you do not need to have Commercial (Comprehensive) General Liability Insurance or up-to-date WorkSafeBC coverage to register, you will have to meet these requirements prior to working on any ministry projects. Only owned or lease-to-own equipment is eligible for registration. Equipment can only be registered in one area in any given year. Seniority is not transferable from area to area. The deadline for new registrations is 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2014. Late registrations will be accepted, but may appear at the bottom of the open list. Note that there is no charge for registering new equipment or for changing or removing equipment information already listed.

BOOKNOTES
Mike Selby horn, the Times reporter who wrote the article. Panghorn was about as helpful as the circulation clerk. After swearing before Congress that he was indeed the author of the article, he began to backpedal, stating he couldn’t remember if he wrote all or only part of the article. Yet even if he had, the notes he kept were definitely lost. Panghorn was next grilled about “the other frauds perpetrated by the seceding Members of Congress” which he mentioned in the article he may or may not have
written. After a few minutes of humming and hawing, Panghorn said he thought seceding was fraud enough. The increasingly impatient Congress also wanted to know if his article was based on facts or rumours. “Facts,” replied Panghorn, stating he had overheard several people in a post office discussing the theft. Wondering why his interrogators were now looking at him with their mouths hanging open, he named another reporter who also heard these “facts.” This one was no more help than Panghorn, explaining he hadn’t checked to see if what he had overheard was true or not, stating, “I regarded it as none of my business.” Dr. Calvin Chaffee, the chief librarian of the House Library, was next on deck (no one wanted to speak to his surly-looking clerk). Chaffee produced a large list of missing books, but he
refused to confirm they had been stolen by the Confederacy. He then testified that even if they had been stolen, it would be impossible to tell. The library — which held more than 30,000 items—had no catalogue. In the end, the investigative committee could only chide the Times’ reporters, stating that both of them had drawn “the most reckless and unwarranted inferences” from post office gossip. Did the South (or anyone) actually steal books from Congress? It remains unknown. Even if they had irrefutable proof it is unlikely any action would have been taken at the time. They had no sooner closed their inquiry when Fort Sumter was attacked. The Civil War had begun. Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

Program for young voices needs local support dinator Susie MacDonald explained, “Teachers can book these presentations online, and we offer funding for busing as well as a small honoraria for educators. As a result, on average it only costs us ten dollars per student per program.” CBEEN’s goal this year is to secure $125,000 towards this program which would allow them to offer programs to over 10,000 local students. So far, $100,000 has been secured, and the program needs the final $25,000 by April 22 (Earth Day) in order to meet the high demand of the busy spring field trip season. CBEEN is seeking program sponsorship from local businesses, as well as charitable donations from individuals. Local business Conservation by Design has just pledged $1,000 towards this campaign,
and has challenged others to do the same. “We believe it is critical for children to grow up with experiences that allow them to learn about this region’s spectacular landscape and get outdoors to experience nature first hand,” said Deborah Griffith, CBEEN Director and Wild Voices for Kids program founder. CBEEN would also like to recognize other funders that have already come on board including FortisBC, Columbia Basin Trust, BC Hydro, the Province of British Columbia, Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, District of Invermere and the Columbia Valley Community Foundation. If you would like to make a donation or sponsor the Wild Voices for Kids Program, please go to www.cbeen.org or contact Duncan Whittick at 250-341-6141 or email info@cbeen.org.

What is the Bible? Different views What is the Bible? I’ve written about thinking about the Bible. Inerrancy is not this before, but recently someone asked the only way to approach the texts of the me the question, so I thought it might be Bible. There are, in fact, many Christians worth writing about it again. It’s also who do not accept this notion of “Biblical timely; this past Tuesday, there was a de- inerrancy”. At the same time, I also affirm evolutionary approach. There is, however, another way of that the Bible throughout is a human
product. The Bible contains the witness of our spiritual ancestors in Israel and the early church. It is a record of their experiences of God, their thoughts about God, their understandings of what life with God is about, their praise and prayers, their wisdom. We hear their voices, their witness and testimony. We also hear their limited understandings, their blindness and conventions, their desires for protection and vengeance against their enemies. It’s all there. Some parts of the Bible, frankly, are not very inspiring. They tell stories of genocide and the massacre of whole populations. They talk about keeping women in their place. They reflect the patriarchal world in which the Bible was born. It is up to each new generation to discern where God continues to inspire us, and where we hear simply the presuppositions of a certain society at a certain time. When I think about the Bible, I use a phrase from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians: “we have this treasure in earthen vessels.” (2 Corinthians 4: 7) Paul wasn’t referring to the Bible, but to the messengers of the good news of Jesus Christ, including himself. But it applies equally well to the Bible. The gospel, the good news, always comes to us in earthen vessels or “clay jars” to use a more recent translation. So while the Bible may not be inerrant, it is still “treasure” in those earthen vessels. It has been remarkably full of meaning for people throughout the centuries. It continues to be inspired as people find their spiritual way and make their spiritual journey. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Opinion/Events Letters to the Editor
South Star Ski Trails are in great shape
Winter has returned and we have been able to grade, roll and ‘track set’ trails in the South Star Recreation Area. Conditions are excellent. This year features a new bridge over Peavine Creek which was built by Dave Basaraba with help from Bryan Cale. This bridge is part of the new Kinnickinnick snowshoe trail. The trail is about nine kilometres long, starts at the gate, crosses the power line and the creek, and follows a section of Peavine trail. Then the snowshoe trail heads up over the top of Easy Street and steeply uphill to Meadow trail then down again to the power line. This trail is “dog friendly” and is signed at the beginning and the end. A portion of
the trail in the higher elevations is marked by flagging tape as a temporary measure. There is also a dog friendly ski trail on the east side of the ski trails which is about six kilometres. We ask that you do not take your dog on “track set” ski trails. Grooming takes a lot of time and effort and we thank Al Freeze and several others who assist him for providing excellent tracks for classic skiing. We ask that all users respect the non-motorized designation of the trails year round. During the seasons without snow, many people find excellent hiking, biking, horseback riding and other outdoor activities in this community resource area. There is no patrolling or monitoring of the trail system, and use is at your own risk. Always carry water and a cellphone,
and let someone know where you are going and when you will be back. Cell service in the area is excellent. The area is managed by the South Star Recreation Society under a partnership agreement with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. Funding is by donation. Although the area is open to the public free of charge, there is a donation box at the trail head which will accept whatever is offered for an individual ski. Yearly memberships in the society are $15 for an individual or $25 for a family. Membership forms can be obtained by emailing rocke.robertson@ shaw.ca or by snail mail to 3250 53rd St. South, Cranbrook, BC, V1C 7A3. Rocke Robertson South Star Recreation Society
The Strathcona Horse and the Anglo-Boer War, Part III
Life and death in the Transvaal JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now
Jim Cameron And so they left. Bidding farewell to friends and family, the boys of the Strathcona Horse travelled to Ottawa to stay for one month while the regiment gathered to train and drill and learn the life of the soldier, sleeping in stables that commanding Officer Lt. Col. Sam Steele ensured were equipped with a palette and fresh straw for each of the men and even better accommodations for their beloved horses, hand-picked from across the country. The regiment, in new uniforms and trademark Stetson hats, was honoured and admired by one and all. Throngs upon throngs presented flags and guidons and the cheers of a nation for the lads headed to fight the Boers of South Africa. They learned to use their skills to ride and fight as a unit, but, in true Canadian fashion, generally failed to learn proper respect for authority and so also learned of the guardhouse and piquet duty and demerits, but only by way of warning, as Sam Steele himself was known to buck authority at times and these were his men, trained to fight his way. Of the 20-odd recruits of Cranbrook, Adam Hall was the first to fall out, refused on medical grounds. The others, led by Captain Edmund Parker — their elected leader since enlistment — could barely contain their impatience in “getting in the thick of things,” of “pulling [Boer leader] Oom Paul’s whiskers,” of “striking a blow for Queen and country.” Walter West, Alfred Jones, Henry Wiggins, John Kennedy, William O’Hearn, Isaac Foster, Charles and Frank Norton, Henry

The men of the Strathcona Horse onboard the Monterey shortly before reaching Cape Town. Melton, Walter Edwards, William Clarke and the others boarded the good ship “Monterey” in Halifax on Mar. 17, 1900, to sail for Cape Town, South Africa: 512 enlisted men, 28 officers, 599 horses and three machine guns. She was an able ship but rolled heavily in the rough March seas. The men recovered quickly; the horses suffered horribly. Two died the second day out, 11 the following day, seven the day after that. Rocking incessantly in their stalls and brought down by “a type of pneumonia”, the dying continued for the whole of the trip. Men watched in dismay as the bodies of their lifeless horses were cast into the sea. The Strathcona Horse disembarked in Cape Town on April 11. It was, they discovered, a country of hot days and cold nights, of Boer prisoners who were “shot down like dogs” while trying to escape. A place where, according to William Clarke, “[as far
as the war went] there was a great deal less excitement than in Cranbrook,” where it was “puzzling that whites and blacks mix so freely.” Where the Scottish regiments referred to the Canadians as “terriers” in deference of their fighting abilities. It was a bold new world for the men of the East Kootenay. Private Simmell (of Vernon, B.C.) was the first casualty, brought down not by Boer bullets but, as so often the case in wartime, by a deadly infection. Others, including Alex Watson of Cranbrook, were invalided home, while the remainder, some now transferred to other squadrons, trained on the Cape Town fields for yet another month while awaiting orders. They sailed for Durban on the east coast on May 24, to finally enter the fray in the surrounding countryside. Edmund Parker, an experienced military man and the leader of the Cranbrook con-
tingent, was not allowed to keep his rank once the regiment was officially formed. He re-enlisted as a private and was immediately signed on by Col. Steele as a Senior Sergeant who, in his diary, described Parker as “one of the finest shots in Canada, if not in the world.” His shooting prowess was of little help in early August when he and 14 of his men rode into a settlement to accept what they thought was a Boer surrender but turned out to be a shooting gallery. Sgt. Parker was shot dead through the heart. He is buried in a well-kept grave in Watervaal, South Africa. One month later Privates West, Jones and Wiggins fell on a hillside near Badfontein. Surrounded on all sides but unwilling to surrender, they fought with side by side their comrades to the last. They rest in a cemetery near Lydenburg, S.A., their gravestones adorned with maple leaves.

Homan still unbeaten at Scotties after comeback win over Lawton BILL BEACON Canadian Press
MONTREAL - Rachel Homan finally faced adversity at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. And the Team Canada skip emerged from it with a comeback 7-6 victory over Saskatchewan’s Stefanie Lawton and with her perfect record intact at 9-0 on Thursday at the Maurice Richard Arena. “It was a really good game,” said Homan, who was taken to the 10th end for the first time in the tournament. “Fun for the fans and fun for us to get a lot of rocks in play. “It was a tough battle to get control of the game back and force a mistake in the last end.” Homan’s Ottawa rink plowed through its first eight games outscoring its opponents by a combined 71-30, but it wasn’t that easy against Lawton (7-2). Homan wrecked on a guard to let Lawton score three in the second end. Canada got two back in the third and another two in the seventh to make it 5-5. It was Lawton’s turn to miss in the eighth
with a draw that went a little long to give Homan her first lead with a steal of one. Lawton tied it in the ninth, but Homan had the hammer in the final end. She still hasn’t had to throw a 10th-end last rock because Lawton’s final steal attempt fell just short. “That wasn’t our strongest game as a team,” said Lawton. “We can pick it up. “Rachel’s team played great and put pressure on us. We can finetune a few of those shots and make them better.” Manitoba’s Chelsea Carey (8-1) clinched a playoff spot with a 9-8 win over Ontario’s Allison Flaxey (3-6) on a point in an extra end. She also took over sole possession of the second place, pushing Lawton to third. “That’s step one making the playoffs,” said Carey. “Now we’ll try for the 1-versus-2 game, but as long as I’m in the playoffs I’m a happy camper.” Other afternoon matches saw New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford (6-4) keep her hopes alive with a 5-4
win over the Yukon’s Sarah Koltun (1-9), and P.E.I.’s Kim Dolan (3-7) earned a 7-5 decision over Nova Scotia’s Heather Smith (3-7). Flaxey started the Scotties 1-5, but emerged as a spoiler Wednesday with victories over Alberta and the Yukon. She gave Carey a scare with a three in the sixth and another two in the eighth for a 7-5 lead. But Carey rallied with three in the ninth and held Flaxey to one in the 10th to force an extra end. In the morning draw, Alberta’s Val Sweeting earned a 10-3 win in eight ends over Quebec’s Allison Ross (1-9). Ross opened with the hammer but Sweeting (7-3) had steals of two, three and two points over the first three ends for a commanding 7-0 lead before Quebec scored one in the fourth. The other early game saw Kesa Van Osch of B.C. (6-4) claim a 7-3 victory over Heather Strong of Newfoundland (4-6). Manitoba faces Alberta in the evening draw later Thursday.
Bombers acquire QB Drew Willy from Saskatchewan Roughriders C ANADIAN PRESS
WINNIPEG - They lost out on the Henry Burris sweepstakes but the Winnipeg Blue Bombers didn’t wait long to land another quarterback, acquiring Drew Willy Thursday from the Grey Cup-champion Saskatchewan Roughriders for Canadian receiver and Regina native Jade Etienne. Winnipeg also signed Willy to an extension, reportedly for two years.
He was scheduled to become a free agent next week and will be unveiled by the Blue Bombers on Friday at Investors Group Field. “Drew is a quarterback we have always thought had very high potential in this league,” said Winnipeg GM Kyle Walters. “He immediately upgrades us at this position and we really look forward to him being a part of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers moving forward.”
But is he a starter who can win regularly, something a team that finished with a leagueworst 3-15 record last season so desperately needs? Playing behind Darian Durant, Willy doesn’t have a lot of experience. He posted a 2-2 record in his two seasons with the Roughriders and, at least on paper right now, is competing for the starter’s job with Max Hall and Justin Goltz.

Ice on hurricane watch Kootenay has a home and home series with Lethbridge this weekend TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
It’s another important weekend of divisional games for the Kootenay Ice as they have a home and home series with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The Ice head to Lethbridge on Friday, before coming back home to play host on Saturday. Despite their lowly ranking in the Eastern Conference standings, the Hurricanes have beat the Ice twice in their last four meetings. After building a 3-1 lead in the opening period during a game in January, the ‘Canes came back for a 5-4 win at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge. “We’re certainly not going to forget that,” said Ice defenceman Landon Cross. “We’re going to go in there and we want to get even.
We just got to worry about our own game when we go in there. We know their record and we just want to keep things going like we’ve been playing lately.” Forward Zach McPhee agreed, noting that the team seemed to coast after getting the early lead. “I think we just got comfortable that we had a lead and thought it would be easy for the next two periods,” McPhee said. We took our foot off the gas and and they came back. It was kind of one of those games where they just came back in and we didn’t have an answer.” In December, the ‘Canes also got the best of the Ice in Cranbrook, coming back in the third period to post a win after forcing a shootout. However, the boys have some swagger in their step, winning
seven of their last eight games. “I think it’s been our work ethic lately. We just got to compete with other teams and we just want to keep it rolling,” said Cross. Lethbridge (11-39-2-3) has had a tough go this season, but they have won two of their last three games and also have some new bodies on the roster following the WHL trade deadline. NOTES: Kootenay Ice captain Sam Reinhart, with a monster five-point night on Tuesday against the Blades, extended his point streak to 11 games. Zach Franko also has points in his last 3 games, while Jaedon Descheneau has a two-game streak going. Forward Ryan Chynoweth, who is upper-body day-to-day, is skating in practice with a yellow no-contact jersey.
St. Louis to replace Stamkos on Team Canada roster C ANADIAN PRESS
SOCHI, Russia Martin St. Louis is going to get a chance to represent his country at the Winter Olympics after all. Hockey Canada announced today that the 38-year-old Tampa Bay forward will replace injured Lightning teammate Steven Stamkos on Canada’s men’s hockey team at the Sochi Olympics. “I heard from Stammer that he wasn’t
going to go, so I knew it was a possibility,” St. Louis told reporters in Tampa on Thursday. “So I guess I was prepared for it.” St. Louis said he felt bad for Stamkos, who tried hard to come back from a broken right tibia he suffered in a Nov. 11 NHL game before being ruled out of Olympic competition by the Lightning’s medical staff on Wednesday. “I think we’ve got to understand how hard
he’s tried and worked to put himself in the position he’s in and give himself a chance,” St. Louis said. “Obviously he’s disappointed and I’m disappointed for him. Stammer’s a true professional and he’s done everything he can this past month to get back to the lightning first and hopefully to Team Canada.” St. Louis was considered one of Canada’s most surprising snubs
when Canada’s team was first announced, along with Philadelphia forward Claude Giroux and Pittsburgh forward James Neal. The Laval, Que., native led the league in points in the 2012-13 shortened season with 17 goals and 43 assists in 48 games. He is having another strong campaign in 2013-14 with 54 points (25 goals, 29 assists) in 56 games, good for 11th in the league.

Steady medal pace expected for Canadians at Olympics Donna Spencer Canadian Press
SOCHI, Russia Canada was a second-half team at the 2010 Winter Olympics. The medal intake in Sochi is forecasted to happen at a more measured pace. Starting with Saturday’s men’s snowboard slopestyle and women’s moguls, Canada has at least one legitimate medal shot, if not more, virtually every day until the closing ceremonies Feb. 23. Chef de mission Steve Podborski and his assistants Jean-Luc Brassard and France St. Louis intend to be present at events where a Canadian is a front-runner for a medal. “I would say we’re booked every day,” Podborski said at a Canadian Olympic Committee news conference Thursday. The host country won 18 of its 26 medals in Vancouver during the back half of the Games. Ten of the 14 gold medals came in the second half, including four on the final weekend. Sports making their

Canada will be gunning for a record medal count at the Sochi Games, including the defence of men’s hockey gold from Vancouver in 2010. Olympic debut helped balance the schedule of Canada’s medal prospects in Sochi. Men’s and women’s snowboard slopestyle, the figure skating team event and the luge relay are among the new events over the first eight days of competition in which Canada has solid medal prospects. That’s in addition to Canada’s strength in the entrenched sports of alpine skiing, moguls, short-track
speedskating and cross-country skiing. “Sure there are new sports and we happen to be very, very good in the new ones because we are a great sporting nation,” Podborski said. “With the support we’re getting now from corporate Canada, Own The Podium and the Government of Canada, we have an opportunity to be good in the traditional sports as well and that’s where we’ll make our great gains in the areas where
are athletes are getting better . . . cross-country, alpine skiing.” Canada’s athletes have been waging fierce foosball tournaments in their village lounge while they await Friday’s opening ceremonies, according to Podborski. But Olympic competition started early for some Canadians with Thursday’s preliminary rounds. Canada sat in second place, two points behind host Russia, after the first day of the new team figure skating event. Toronto’s Patrick Chan was third in the men’s short program, then Meagan Duhamel of Lively, Ont., and Eric Radford of Balmertown, Ont., were second in the pairs short to give Canada 17 of a possible 20 points after the first two events. Sebastien Toutant of L’Assomption, Que., and Max Parrot of Bromont, Que., advanced to the men’s snowboard slopestyle final Saturday, while Charles Reid of Mont-Tremblant, Que., and Regina’s Mark McMorris will attempt to join them via the semifinal earlier in
Fading Cavaliers fire GM Chris Grant Associated Press
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio - The Cleveland Cavaliers made a big change with another season falling apart, firing general manager Chris Grant on Thursday. Grant was fired a day after the Cavs dropped their sixth straight game, an embarrassing home loss to a Los Angeles Lakers team that started with eight players and finished with five. Vice president of basketball operations David Griffin will serve as acting general manager. Owner Dan Gilbert made it clear he’s unhappy with what has transpired in a season that began with hopes the Cavs would make the playoffs after a three-year absence. “This has been a very difficult period for the franchise,” Gilbert said in a statement. “We have
severely underperformed against expectations. Just as this is completely unacceptable to our loyal and passionate fan base, season ticket holders and corporate partners, it is also just as unacceptable to our ownership group.” Gilbert also met with reporters at the team’s training facility following the announcement. He expressed confidence that the Cavs can show improvement under coach Mike Brown over the final 33 games. Grant was instrumental in the rehiring of Brown, who was fired during his first stint with the team in 2010. Gilbert was asked if Brown’s job was safe for the rest of this season. “We’re going to see Mike Brown succeed this year because I think that he’ll be able to
do good things and I think this team will be able to do good things,” Gilbert said. “I think they’re going to look at each other and they’re going to look in the mirror and they’re going to rally.” Gilbert also was asked why he decided to change his general manager but not his coach. “Coach Brown has only been here over half a season,” he said. “Chris Grant has been here 8 1/2 years. He’s been the general manager almost four years. There’s a lot of talent on this team. I think everybody knows that.” Gilbert promised last spring the Cavs would not return to the NBA lottery, but Cleveland is 16-33 and has dropped six in a row - matching its longest losing streak of the season.

play.” The statement came prior to the Canucks’ game Thursday night against the Montreal Canadiens and said Sedin would be made available to reporters after the contest. The announcement comes after Canucks coach John Tortorella
said he was shutting Sedin down for Vancouver’s final two NHL games before the Olympic break. Sedin returned for two contest with Vancouver after missing six with bruised ribs. Sedin has nine goals and 40 points in 52 games this season.

O’Brien of Courtney, B.C., qualified for the women’s slopestyle final Sunday. No competition is scheduled Friday because of the opening ceremonies. In addition to slopestyle and women’s moguls on opening weekend, skiers Erik Guay of

Kyle Shanahan joins Cleveland Browns Associated Press
BEREA, Ohio - The Cleveland Browns are expected to take a quarterback in the top five of the NFL draft in May, and new offensive co-ordinator Kyle Shanahan will help develop him. New Browns coach Mike Pettine introduced Shanahan, along with defensive co-ordinator Jim O’Neil and special teams co-ordinator Chris Tabor, at a news conference on
Thursday. Shanahan had experience in the role with the Washington Redskins and Robert Griffin III, the No. 2 pick of the 2012 draft. It ended with Shanahan being fired and the relationship with Griffin deemed rocky after two seasons. But Shanahan says he learned from the experience and believes he and Griffin benefited from their time together.

Labradoodle creator laments unleashing designer dogs Ben Walker Associated Press
NEW YORK — He’s deemed the man who unleashed the designer dog craze, this wave of Maltipoos, puggles and shorkies. A Doberhuahua? Not quite. But from that new Super Bowl ad to Hollywood boulevards and nearly to the White House, these pooches with cute names are pretty popular. Hardly what Wally Conron expected — or ever wanted — back in the late 1980s when he first bred a pair of prize canines and called the result a Labradoodle. “I’ve done a lot of damage,’’ Conron told The Associated Press this week by phone from his home in Australia. “I’ve created a lot of problems.’’ “Marvelous thing? My foot,’’ he said. “There are a lot of unhealthy and abandoned dogs out there.’’ No Labradoodles are entered in Saturday’s agility competition at the Westminster Kennel Club show, but for the first time in the event’s 138-year history, mixed breeds are welcome. Called “all-American’’ dogs by some and mutts by many, they’ll weave, jump and run through an obstacle course. Only purebreds are allowed in the main event, though, and more than 2,800 of them are entered in the nation’s most prominent dog event. The rings open Monday and the best in
show ribbon will be awarded Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. Conron isn’t from the show world. He was working as the puppy-breeding manager at the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia when he tried to fulfil a request from a couple in Hawaii. She had vision problems, her husband was allergic, and they wanted a dog that would satisfy their needs. After a lot of trial-and-error, Conron came up with a solution when he bred a standard poodle with a Labrador retriever. The mix was a personal triumph, yet not a success outside his lab. “I was very, very careful of what I used, but nobody wanted Labrador crosses. I had a three-to-six-month waiting list, but everyone wanted purebreds,’’ the 85-year-old Conron recalled. “So I had to come up with a gimmick.’’ “We came up with the name ‘Labradoodle,’’’ he said. “We told people we had a new dog and all of sudden, people wanted this wonder dog.’’ Over the years, demand grew for Conron and other breeders. Labradoodles became a hot dog — Jennifer Aniston, Tiger Woods and Christie Brinkley are among their owners — and President Barack Obama’s family considered a Labradoodle before picking a Portuguese water dog as the
First Pet. “When I heard he was thinking about a Labradoodle, I wrote to him and said to make sure he checked its pedigree,’’ Conron said. There’s the problem that troubles him. Conron said there are far too many unscrupulous people eager to make a buck at a dog’s expense. Rather than check the history and science, he said “horrific’’ puppy mills are springing up and producing unstable
CALGARY — The capture of some of Alberta’s wild horses has begun and is sparking anger from critics. The Alberta government says feral horses are an invasive species and cause damage to the environment and that’s why it has approved the capture of up to 200 of them. While some horses
will be kept for breeding, others will be slaughtered. About 50 protesters turned out in Calgary today to protest the move. Anita Virginello says there is no proof that the cull is necessary. She says most of the horses will be sent to the slaughterhouse and others will be killed during capture.

dogs that go unwanted and eventually are euthanized. “Instead of breeding out the problems, they’re breeding them in,’’ he said. “For every perfect one, you’re going to find a lot of crazy ones.’’ That’s a concern Conron has echoed in the past, blaming himself for opening a “Pandora’s box’’ and creating a “Frankenstein.’’ PETA appreciated that Conron is “speaking out to stop the loss of

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You might want to take some of the heat off a close associate or loved one. You might try having a discussion with someone else involved, but that is unlikely to succeed. In fact, your efforts likely will fall short. Recognize your limits. Tonight: Get together with friends. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You often tend to exaggerate a situation without realizing it. Certain facts really do stand out to you more than others. A partner or close loved one might feel uneasy about a conversation. Tonight: Meet up with friends to celebrate. TGIF! GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You could breeze through a lot of work and feel much freer for a while. Double-check everything you do right now, because there could be an error. Someone you count on could be off-kilter. You see a situation differently from how he or she does. Tonight: In weekend mode.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Do more listening and less reacting. You might not be happy with what you are hearing, but you will see a situation differently in the long run. Make a list of the pros and cons rather than react. Detach as much as humanly possible. Tonight: Head home. Do a vanishing act. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Listen to news more openly than you have in the past. You might conclude that a partner is less than helpful. Find out what is on this person’s mind, and clear out any obstacles between the two of you. You could discover that one of you has incorrect information. Tonight: Just be yourself. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) How you deal with others and their complications could be exhausting. Some have expectations that you might not be able to fulfill. It will be important to have a discussion about what you can do, as opposed to what they would like you to do. Tonight: Accept an offer. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Tundra
Your ability to see the big picture might be more significant than you realize. You are able to visualize an idea and see how to make it possible. Use your unique creativity. You must not allow someone or a situation to trigger you. Tonight: Meet a friend at a new spot. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Listen to what someone shares. You might think that you are in a position to clear up a problem. However, even if you succeed, you will have to redo this same process later. Be aware that someone might have a mental block. Tonight: Be with a favorite person. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You have reason to feel popular, as others seek you out. Your ability to understand what is happening is a resource that people want to tap into. A family commitment could be more difficult to handle than you are aware. Tonight: The spotlight is on you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You might want to approach an associate in a different way.
Listen to what he or she has to say. Observe what is happening between you and a close friend, sibling or neighbor. You might not be seeing this person clearly. Tonight: Finish up what you must. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You could be very forthright in your dealings over financial concerns and/or a creative project. You won’t be able to complete your agreement at this time, because it would backfire. Stay light and easy when dealing with a loved one or child. Tonight: Be a kid yourself. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You could be wondering what is happening with a family member who seems a bit out of sorts. This person might feel weighed down by responsibilities. If you pitch in, you could be surprised by how fast his or her mood will change. Tonight: Make it early. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Our 14-year-old daughter is not a terrible kid -- probably just a typical teenage girl. She can be rude and obnoxious, she talks back and curses, and she leaves her room an upside-down mess and is obsessed with her iPhone, constantly posting pictures of herself online and chatting with friends. We have another daughter five years younger. We were concerned she might model her behavior after her older sister, and so we set rules about cursing and using her cellphone. Our 14-year-old could not abide by the new rules, and after much fighting, she decided to move in with her grandparents, who are much more lenient. She’s been there for several weeks, and by all accounts, she is more responsible and respectful to her grandparents than she ever was with us, and they are happy to have her. Our home is a lot more peaceful now, too. It seems like a win-win-win situation, but it doesn’t feel normal not to have our daughter living with us. And one time, she even said she doesn’t consider us her parents anymore, but she still calls us when she needs something. Should my wife and I be concerned about this situation? -- Daughter Dilemma Dear Dilemma: No. Some teenagers are more difficult than others, and the relationship with parents is often harder for them to deal with. What your daughter says is less important than what she does. If her behavior has improved because she no longer feels she has to rebel against you, that is a good thing. We do recommend, however, that you keep interacting with her in a positive way and not only when she calls asking for something. While she is away, we hope you will examine your parenting methods and determine whether there is anything you could do differently to produce a better result. Both too lenient and too strict are not advisable. Your pediatrician can make recommendations, you can ask for books on parenting at your local library or bookstore, and you can also go online. Dear Annie: When my birthday, Mother’s Day or Christmas roll around, family members always ask, “What can I get you? You have everything.” The gift that pleases me most is their time. A phone call or visit would make my day. Mark your calendar to call Dad or Mom or Grandma. They would be so happy. And here’s the return gift: Seniors -- stay busy. Your children and grandchildren are not responsible for your entertainment. There are senior centers, churches and clubs that you can join. Or volunteer. Your children have jobs, families and responsibilities. Don’t criticize them. They will ask for your opinion if they want it. And to each, remember to say I love you, especially if you haven’t said it for a long time. The first time may be hard, but oh, the wonderful feeling it will leave. -- Happy, Active and Much Loved Senior Dear Happy: You have given wise advice to all age groups, including the idea to consider the needs of others instead of your own. It certainly explains your signature. Thank you. Dear Annie: Please tell “Perplexed in Pennsylvania” not to worry that her friend keeps forgetting her birthday. Mine is on September 11th, and my brother, sister, aunt, nieces and nephews do not acknowledge it, probably because they aren’t sure how to celebrate my birthday when it’s also a day of such sadness. I keep in touch with all of them, and that is what matters. -- Happy in Connecticut Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
