Bentley residents are going to the polls again later this month to fill a town councilor vacancy left after the death of Councilor Cliff Knutson. Nomination Day was January 27. There are three candidates running for the spot: Cora Knutson, Greg Rathjen, and Raymond Williams. Cora Knutson, wife of the late Cliff Knutson, is a long-time resident of the area, has lived in Bentley since 1997, and is a past business owner. Greg Rathjen, a pastor and school bus driver, has lived in Bentley for 27 years, and has previous experience sitting on Bentley town council. Raymond (Ray) Williams, who has lived in Bentley approximately fifteen years and been a town business owner for twelve of those years, ran in the fall 2013 election and was runner up. A candidate forum hosted by the Bentley library Board is scheduled for Tuesday, February 18 at 7 p.m. in the Bentley Elks/Legion hall meeting room. There will be an advance poll on Saturday, February 22 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Bentley Drop-In Centre located at the back of the town office building. Voting Day is Monday, February 24 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., and is also at the Bentley Drop-In Centre. Voters are reminded to bring identification.

Winter festival to bring fun and excitement to Rimbey By Treena Mielke The cold, dreary month of February will be brightened somewhat with the fun and adventure of a winter festival. The festival, to be held Feb. 15, is a sure way to promote family fun, fresh air, exercise and socializing. Director of Community Services Peter Stenstrom said the town is partnering with the Christian School to bring the best ever winter festival to the community.

W

For those who enjoy getting out on the slopes, a ski trip is planned to Medicine Lodge Ski Hill as part of the festival. The bus will leave from the Christian School at 9 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. Discounted rates of $35 for adults, $30 for youth and seniors and $25 for children under nine will be offered and include the lift ticket and bus ride. At about 3 p.m. activities will get underway at the Christian School in town. There will be supervised skating at the outdoor rink, tobogganing, creative snow

painting and someone will be on hand to teach participants the basics of cross country skiing. A barbecue will be set up and hotdogs and hot chocolate served. Later, a game of shinny will be organized at the outdoor rink. Stenstrom is looking forward to a great day with public participation. “In the past we have had a winter festival at different stations throughout town. This year we decided to have everything at

the Christian School. It is a great site and the skating rink and toboggan hill are already there.” No registration is required for the winter festival. However, those wishing to go on the ski trip need to register at the recreation office. Stenstrom said this year’s winter festival is driven by the recreation board as a way to promote healthy, family fun in the community.

RCMP on lookout for man who assaulted common law spouse Rimbey RCMP responded to over 80 calls for service in this reporting period. Highlights include break and enter at an oil field site, mailbox thefts, drugs, theft, dangerous drivers and other serious matters. Cheech and Chong arrest A Rimbey Mountie patrolling Highway 20 north of town stopped a speeding Volvo near Highway 607. When the inquisitive officer approached the vehicle he found a pair of modern day “Cheech and Chong’s” doing their very best to act naturally after smoking a big reefer just prior to being stopped. As the green smoke billowed out of the window, they knew the jig was up and handed over their stash of marihuana they had yet to light up. Charges were laid and the vehicle seized and impounded. Both made their way back to Fox Creek where they are currently hanging their hats and will not likely be back to Rimbey until they appear in court on March 7. RCMP seek violent man Officers responded to a domestic assault complaint where a man allegedly beat his common-law spouse to the point where she was hospitalized

for her injuries sustained in the attack. When police attended his farm, located just east of Rimbey, he resisted arrest and nearly ran over one of the officers with his pickup truck when he fled the residence. The 31-year-old man, who is very well known to police, is currently at large and is wanted by police. RCMP in Central Alberta are seeking the accused and hope to have him in custody very soon. Partnership works Your local detachment is working diligently in close partnership with the probation officer in an effort to hold those individuals who are out on bail in the community accountable to the court imposed orders they are required to abide by. Several charges have been laid and, in some cases, the individuals targeted by police are now back in jail completing their sentences. Mailbox theft investigated Police are investigating a rash of mailbox thefts occurring in the rural area northeast of town. Please discourage anyone from mailing cash to you. Police are actively pursuing all leads at this time in an effort to arrest the opportunistic thief responsible for

these crimes. Watch for deer There were 17 motor vehicle collisions reported to police. Fortunately, only 15 of them were from hitting deer on Highway 53 east of Highway 771! Kidding. However, if you are travelling east on Highway 53, please slow down after you pass the Highway 771 (Gas Plant) intersection...the deer on that stretch of road are like furry pylons on an obstacle course!

The perils of winter February is turning out to be a grumbling, grouchy old month. It seems to be full of miserable! And it seems to be contagious. And I am no exception. As the days progress on the calendar, I find myself beginning to feel like February, myself. Miserable. Cold. Mad! I don’t really like to feel all miserable, cold and mad like the weather, so I told myself to stop it. Is your cup half full or half empty? I asked myself, sternly. “Frozen,” I answered myself. True! It was. Leave your coffee cup in the car overnight. And that’s what you get. Frozen coffee slush. Anyway, despite the season, I decided I didn’t want to be all miserable and mad so I went out and bought this cool little coat that has layers and a fur trimmed hood that is delightful except it is too big and falls down over my eyes. I’m sure I do not look like a fashion guru, but just silly when I wear it, especially when I run into things as I can’t see too much because of all the fur over my eyes, but oh well. It is warm! I also decided, even though it is not a characteristic I am well known for, to remember where my spare car key is, now and forever more. That, of course, is because of the lesson Mother Nature taught me, only last week. It was a chilly morning, minus 38 or something. Because it was so cold, I decided to start my car a few minutes before I left for work, hence not having to sit in a frozen icebox until I became frozen, as well. I started the car, came back in the house and poured a coffee to go. All seemed well until I tried to get back into my car, coffee cup in hand. My car was locked. “This cannot be,” I said silently to the cold and frozen north that lay silently before me. “I know I

did not lock it. Did not, did not, did not!” I marched my little self, my rapidly cooling coffee cup and my anger back into the house, slamming the door in complete and utter frustration. Just to be sure there was no key fairy lurking in my purse, I dumped its entire contents on the kitchen table. I had a lot of junk in there, but, apparently, no spare keys. Uttering several bad words entirely inappropriate for a grandma, I marched outside unsuccessfully pulling on all the door handles of my still running vehicle. It was very locked! Finally, I phoned a tow truck driver, spitting out my words in sharp, staccato sentences. “Come. Now. Please.” “I’ll be there in half an hour,” he said, sooth-

ingly, like he held a magic key to my happiness which, of course, he did. He was irritatingly cheerful when he arrived. “Weird things happen when it’s cold,” he said in that same soothing voice which made me want to hit something. I smiled. He smiled. Then he took my money and he smiled again. I didn’t. My car locked itself again this morning, but I was ready. I had a spare key in my purse. And, as I took the long, frozen drive to work, I felt something akin to happiness. “Bring it on, winter,” I shouted to the frozen stillness, feigning bravery. I heard a click. Darn! My doors locked again. Where is that spare key?

Movie night at the community centre By Treena Mielke The Peter Lougheed Community Centre is the hub of many and varied activities, not the least of which is the place to watch a really good movie. A movie is now being shown at the community centre on the fourth Tuesday of every month. “We show the movie in the supper auditorium. It’s a really good deal. You get pop and popcorn for $5. We have good sound and quality,” said Director of Community Services, Peter Stenstrom. “The movies we chose to show are family friendly. We won’t show anything over PG13.” This month’s movie is The Hunger Games, Catching Fire. (Preview of movie taken from website) A year after winning the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and her partner, Peeta Mellark must go on what is known as the Victor’s Tour wherein they visit all the districts. But before leaving, Katniss is visited by President Snow who fears that Katniss defied him a year ago during the games when she chose to die with Peta. With both Katniss and Peeta declared the winners, it is fueling a possible uprising. President Snow tells Katniss that while on tour she better try to make sure that she puts out the flames or else everyone she cares about will be in danger. But unfortunately she fails to do that. So Snow decides to enact what is known as the Quarter Quell, the right to make a change to the Hunger Games, which he is allowed to do every 25 years. He decides to hold an edition of the Hunger Games wherein previous winners will compete again. Their mentor Haymitch thinks their best chance to survive is form an alliance with some of the others. They decide to align themselves with Finnick and his partner, Mags. But Snow is secretly hoping Katniss will be killed.

Family Day Long Weekend

Rimbey’s community centre has had a new name for a few months now and last week a sign with the new name was put up. Director of Community Services, Peter Stenstrom said the process for completing the sign is completed. “There was a bit of a process to get the logo in place and it was turned over to a design company, but now that’s all done and we have it up.” Stenstrom said an open house will be held at the community centre in the spring to commemorate the name change. “Details still have to be worked out. We were going to have it in the fall, but things got delayed so we decided to postpone it for April or May when the weather is warmer. Dignitaries from both organizations (the town and Keyera) are invited,” he added. Council approved an agreement between Keyera Energy and the Town of Rimbey to buy the naming rights of the community centre at a cost of $25,000 per year for the next five years last September. Keyera re-named the community centre ‘The Peter Lougheed Community Centre.’ John Cobb, vice-president of Investor Relations for Keyera said the decision to name the community centre after the late premier was made because of his close connection with Keyera and the town. Twins celebrate 99th

February 19, 2014 from 11:30 AM – 1 PM.

By June Norvila Martha Juuti and Mary Ellsworth are twins that have remained virtually inseparable their entire lives. They have lived in the Bentley area and stayed in very close proximity of each other almost as one. Together they just surpassed their 99th year when they quietly celebrated their birthdays together on January 31 at the Bentley Care Centre. On February 2 a 99th birthday party, hosted by the family in their honor in the care centre dining room, was well attended by family, some coming from British Columbia, as well as old time friends. Everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to Martha first as she is the eldest of the two, and then they sang it for Mary, and both had identical black forest birthday cakes, which along with ice cream, were shared with the guests. There were photo opportunities for the families and at one point a chance to get a picture of five generations. Continued on Page 17

Volunteers needed for soccer association By Treena Mielke Rimbey Soccer Association is on the lookout for volunteers. Spokesperson Jacy Anderson said the success of the association is dependent on volunteers and they seem to be in short supply. While there is an abundance of soccer players in Rimbey, volunteers are not stepping forward to help balance the scales. “It (the association) is totally dependent on volunteers,” she said. “We need coaches and board members. Referees are also needed, but those positions are paid,” she added. Board members have various

roles including sitting on the executive, helping with registration, and working with the Central Alberta Soccer Association. Last year there were six competitive teams and three age groups of house league teams, said Anderson. The season, which ran from April to June, was available for players ages four to 18. For more information contact Diana at 403-843-6749. The Soccer Association’s annual general meeting will be held Mon., March 17 in the Lions Room at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre at 6:30 p.m.

“I just recently dealt with Tyson from the Sylvan lake branch and I must say this was one of the best vehicle purchases/trades at a dealership to date. Customer care was great the met the needs on my trade that I was looking for as we both saw value in both vehicles we were dealing on. Setting up financing was a breeze and all my needs were met in a timely manner. I had done some shopping around at other dealerships before heading to sylvan and by far the least pushy and didn’t hammer me with trying to sell me something.. they answered my questions and never once asked me the typical salesman BS the others fed out! Thank you”

Card Of Thanks

Maryann Olson December 26, 2011 I thought of you with love today, but that is nothing new. I thought about you yesterday, and days before that too. I think of you in silence, I often speak your name. All I have are memories and a picture in a frame. Your memory is a keepsake, with which I’ll never part. God has you in His keeping, I have you in my heart. With Love from the family

We would like to thank the Doctors and nurses of Rimbey Hospital and Long Term Care facility for all their never ending support for our father, while in their care. Many thanks to Wilson’s Funeral Chapel for their help, and Reverend James Strachan for the wonderful service held. Thank you to all the many friends and relatives who sent flowers, donations, and gave all of us support during this time. The ladies group for looking after the snacks and coffee at the Legion Hall. If we have missed anyone, many thanks to you. ~ The Maser Family

Twins celebrate Jan. 31 birthday Continued from Page 11 In the five generations picture were Martha Juuti, her oldest son Richard (aka Dick) Juuti who is married to Carmen, their oldest daughter (Martha’s granddaughter), Shelley Olin who is married to Merle, their oldest son (Martha’s great grand-son), Riley Olin who is with Leah, and their first-born (Martha’s greatgreat-grand-son), six-month-old Tell. The twins, Martha and Mary Skjonsberg were born on January 31, 1915, the eleventh and twelfth children out of 13 born to Hans and Helga Skjonsberg. Martha married Carl Juuti in 1936. They had six children. Mary was married to Glen Ellsworth in 1937. They had no children. The twins both first lived on farms in the area. They both eventually moved into Bentley - Mary with her husband Glen into their own house in 1974 and

Martha and Carl in 1976 into Valley View Apartments in Bentley and in 1982 into Westview Apartments. Both lived in Bentley until 2002 when both moved to a lodge in Lacombe after having lost their husbands. They were separated for a while; one residing in Lacombe and one in Bentley, until both were moved into the Bentley Care Centre. In past years they could be seen walking down town in Bentley daily and they enjoyed shopping trips to Red Deer on Thursdays, usually dressed in identical outfits. Unless you knew them very well you couldn’t tell them apart. Happy ninety-ninth birthday, Martha and Mary! Next year both the twins and the town of Bentley will be celebrating their 100-year birthdays.

GENERAL MEETING is Wednesday, Feb. 12/14 @ 7 pm at the Drop in Centre basement.

Public Welcome

Kidz Korner

We posed the question—“What is the best predictor of school success and school readiness?” to Dr. Jean Clinton and here is what she had to say: I believe that as parents our hearts desire is for our kids to thrive. For them to arrive at school eager, happy and ready to learn. We have, unfortunately though, had a big emphasis placed on “school readiness equaling numeracy and literacy”—knowing your numbers and letters—so people equate getting ready for school with being able to read and write. This is a very big problem because it makes people have a focus on “sit and do your letters” and

way less on learning through play. The problem is that we now know the best predictor of school success is not how well you know your numbers and letters; it’s not even your intelligence quotient. The best predictor of school success is your social and emotional abilities. Remember to play! Simple Activities to do WITH your child (18 months – 3 years) • With plastic knives or “heart “ cookie cutters, roll out play dough and cut out hearts • If your child receives valentines let them tear open the envelope to retrieve the card inside. • Make a tunnel or a tent by draping a blanket over two chairs or a table. Roll a car or a ball in and encourage your child to go in and get it.

COMMUNITY

Good To Know: So how can we best prepare children for school? Balance the development of the whole child with a focus on: • Learning through play, • Learning the rules of social interaction and caring about others – the development of empathy, and • Being the boss of their own feelings. Numeracy and literacy are hugely important we just cannot leave behind social and emotional development. We really need an emphasis on social and emotional literacy and learning.
