China Ridge hosts free Family Day
A combined effort provides residents with a free Family Fun Day at China Ridge Trails. Lisa Carleton lisa@similkameenspotlight.com
Laughter and squeals of joy could be heard everywhere you stood at The Ridge on Monday. China Ridge Trails, the Town of Princeton and Cooper’s Foods combined their efforts to provide residents with a free Family Fun Day to celebrate B.C. Family Day this year. Members of China Ridge Trails, president Bob Coyne and groomer extraordinaire Rod Dixon spent all day Sunday grooming the trails and preparing for the area for Family Day. Bob, Kelley, Vic, Johanna, Kevin, Colleen, Tip, Sharon and Nadine (all members of China Ridge Trails) took turns taking adults and kids out on the trails, teaching them to ski, snowshoe or both. Children, teens and adults all enjoyed the toboggan hill. Myrt and Tom McLaren, locals who are 78 and 80 years young respectively, went out on snowshoes for the first time. They said they enjoyed themselves a great deal. “It was great,” said Myrt, “I may even buy some!” All ski and snowshoe equipment was provided free of charge by China Ridge Trails and the Bridge School—loaned 10 pair of snowshoes for the day. Princeton Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) attended to provide first aid if needed.

Crime Stoppers fundraiser begins February 17 in Princeton South Okanagan Similkameen Crime Stoppers is currently going door to door selling our annual Gift Card fundraiser. The cost remains the same as in previous campaigns, at $25 plus tax. All of the money generated remains in this area to help pay rewards, answer phones and train volunteers. This campaign is running in Penticton until Feb. 16, then on to the Princeton area for February 17 to 23. These canvassers will be wearing jackets shown above along with photo ID around their neck. Crime Stoppers is a Community Owned program therefore they must fundraise to pay
their operating expenses for the upcoming year. We rely solely on the generous support of our community businesses and residents throughout the South Okanagan Similkameen as we do not receive any Government funds or money from Police budgets. We would ask that you consider donating to this worthwhile community program so we can continue to help the Police keep our communities safe. FAMILY DAY - from page 1 Residents were provided an up close view of the Ranger, the newest addition to GSAR’s rescue equipment. As an added bonus to the day, a few of the GSAR members got to try out their own snowshoes while up at The Ridge. Players from the Princeton Posse Hockey Junior Hockey Team joined in on the fun and had an absolute blast celebrating Family Day with all the kids. Cooper’s Foods not only donated the barbecue lunch, Valentine Cookies, and hot chocolate—Cooper’s employees manned the barbecue and hot chocolate stations for the day as well. Combined efforts within the community pro-
vided a day for families to be together and enjoy various forms of outdoor recreation all within the beauty of our local area. Kudos to the Town of Princeton, Cooper’s Foods, The Bridge, China Ridge Trails and to the volunteers who made such a great day happen. China Ridge Trails is located just under 10 km from downtown Princeton. It is a venue that provides year round recreation for all ages and is maintained by a volunteer association. Secondary crusher construction on schedule for summer 2014 start up Copper Mountain Mining Corporation (TSX: CUM) (the “Company” or “Copper Mountain”) announces that construction of the secondary crusher at the Copper Mountain mine located in southern British Columbia is now underway on schedule. The main components of the crusher are now on a ship being transported to eastern Canada for transportation to the mine site. The total cost of construction for the secondary crusher is estimated to be approximately $40 million and construction is expected to be complete by midsummer. Once installed, 100 percent of the mill feed will be sized to the 2 inch range. Plant operating results with minus 2 inch material has confirmed that the mill operates at its designed capacity of 35,000 tpd on a consistent basis. Short term mitigating measures implemented
in 2013 to increase mill throughput have proven to be successful. These temporary measures include increased powder factor in the blasting of ore and the addition of three portable crushers. These short term improvements have proven to enhance mill productivity and are shown in the graphs below. At the start of 2013, SAG mill throughput averaged 24,900 tpd, but with the additions of the small portable crushing plants ahead of the SAG mill, average mill productivity increased to 32,767 tpd by year end. Likewise, mill operating time improved from 86 percent in the first quarter to 90 percent in the fourth quarter with December averaging 95 percent. The combination of improved mill productivity and increased mill operating time resulted in increased copper production quarter over quarter as noted in the graph below.

The ripple effect Lisa Carleton lisa@similkameenspotlight.com
You’ve heard of the ripple effect…It’s what takes place when a single stone is dropped into water—the continuing and spreading results of an event or action. One small step, one simple action, creates a reaction that in turn spreads out causing even further action. Residents concerned with the emptying storefronts in the downtown core brought their concerns to council. Council arranged for two forums to be held to discuss and identify concerns regarding supporting local businesses. From the two forums a committee was formed to work on issues identified. The Chamber of Commerce has been working on a campaign to promote local business and has just released the first stage, with Think Shop Local February. Various degrees of community are coming together for a local cause—sustainability. Everyone could and should take part. Enhancing the appearance of the community, (cleaning up buildings and yards) supporting local businesses who in turn support the non-profits who run the events and cultural activities is something easy enough for each of us to be involved in. If you want to see Princeton grow, get involved in promoting Princeton—tell people why it is that you choose to live here. If you are a business get your name out to the public, not just the locals but to visitors as well. As the internet is a large part of our world today, use it—it is a vital tool that numerous people use to expand their knowledge world wide and on a local scale. Speaking of local... I have been informed that some folks believe that the Similkameen Spotlight is not a local business. I happen to work for a company that is not owned by a ‘local’—however, this paper was created in this community and has been owned and operated by people of this area for the majority of its 65 years. In 2000, the Similkameen Spotlight was sold to Black Press, but continues to be operated by people of this community. The company purchases locally and pays wages locally. We at the Spotlight do not ‘pretend’ to offer a service or ‘pretend’ to support our area. We try our very best to provide excellent service to our communities and support them wholeheartedly. Debbie Lyon, our collator and distributor has been with the Similkameen Spotlight for over 13 years. I myself was born in Penticton, raised in Princeton, married and raised my family here and for the last 11 years have worked for the newspaper that has served the area for 65 years. I have also, for just shy of 30 years, devoted much of my spare time volunteering within this community. If any of that is not considered local, then obviously I don’t know what local is. The Joint Council also expressed concern about a proposed dam to be located near the Similkameen community of Princeton. The Joint Council was established in 2013 as a result of a Protocol Agreement signed by the Regional District with the three Indian Bands. It provides a vehicle for consultation, communication, information sharing, education and cooperation among the member governments.

During the Regular Meeting of Council on Feb. 3, council approved the Terms of Reference for the Airport Select Committee and appointed Dave Eccott, Hank Rabe and Dan Sulentich as committee members. The responsibilities of the committee members will be to provide council and staff with advice on operational issues and proposals in regards to the airport and lands. Council approved the Travel and Conference Policy 015-2014. (an updated policy that clearly states what expenses must be approved by Council as a whole) Council adopted the Fees and Charges Bylaw No. 884,2014. This bylaw incorporates all the charges for each individual bylaw into one document, making it easier to administer fees and in the case of a rate review, only one bylaw would need to be ammended. Water Regulations Bylaw 885,2014 and Sewer Regulations Bylaw 886, 2014 received three readings in order to remove the fees and charges schedules to incorporate them into the Fees and Charges Bylaw No. 884, 2014. Valentines Day ~ 1001 ways to say “I love you” together, accompanied by some gentle much-loved music; sharing the pleasure of a massage together; stretching out side-by-side in a whirlpool bath; going to the movies or cuddling up on the couch while watching one at home; going away for a lovers’ weekend; or flying to a romantic destination. Say it in a different language! Impress your soul mate by whispering words of love in a different language. Here are a few ways to say “I love you” other than in English: Je t’aime (French); Ich liebe dich (German); Te quiero (Spanish); Ti amo (Italian); Ik hou van jou (Dutch); Minä rakastan sinua (Finnish); Jag älskar dig (Swedish).

On this special day of love, both for sweethearts and for friends and family, saying “I love you” is a must. Repeating those same three little words on a daily basis can make them lose their shine, so it’s up to us to restore the lustre they deserve. For tunately, love can be expressed in many different ways. Show it! What could be better for expressing our feelings than to put them down on paper, such as by writing a poem, for example? Now that’s a demonstration of love that is bound to touch your loved one. If writing isn’t one of your strengths, think about a gift instead. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune; just choose it with loving care. Why not offer a bouquet of favourite flowers, a box of luxurious chocolates, or anything else that will make your loved one say “You shouldn’t have — but I love it!” Share it! Another way of expressing your feelings is to spend some quality time with your loved one. A few suggestions: sharing a romantic dinner for two at your favourite restaurant; concocting a meal
There are many different ways to express your love.
Have a happy Valentine’s Day.

Chamber of Commerce kicks off ‘Think Local’ campaign Spencer Coyne
THINK LISTEN LOCAL
Princeton Chamber of Commerce
The Princeton & District Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the kickoff of its Think Local campaign. Think Local is not just another shop local campaign. It is far bigger than that. Think Local is about changing the way people think about our community. We are starting Think Local with Think Shop Local February. Shop Local February is about encouraging local consumers to buy as much product locally as possible, helping to keep local businesses in the black during one of the slowest months of the year. With Valentine’s Day right in the middle of the month, we get to kick off, not only Think Shop Local, but Think Eat Local and Think Listen Local.
THINK SHOP LOCAL Think Shop Local is as the title implies, an initiative to get local consumers to shop locally. Shop local is not just for consumers. It is about business to business or B2B transactions as well. If local businesses can find what they need from computer ink to fresh vegetables locally, then we encourage that type of commerce to take place. When we shop locally, we keep more
money in our economy, which in turn supports local charities and events and employs more people who in turn pay taxes, rents, and more money within the local economy.
THINK EAT LOCAL Think Eat Local is for all the foodies out there. Think Eat Local encourages local consumers to eat at local restaurants. This is why we felt that February was the perfect time to launch Think Local. Why not make reservations today to take your partner out for dinner on Valentine’s Day? Eat Local is also about sourcing more of your food locally. Supporting local agriculture from the farmer’s field to your table, be it beef, lamb, eggs or vegetables, encouraging locally sourced food encourages growth in agriculture and healthier lifestyles.
Think Listen Local is about supporting the local arts and entertainment community. Again when thinking of February there are options for restaurants to have dinner and live music on Valentines Day. The idea behind Think Listen Local was to get people to think about where they go to spend their money for entertainment. When people want something to do on a Friday night we want them to ask themselves who is playing at the Legion on Friday night or is there a concert or play at Riverside this weekend? There is one more part to the initial release of Think Local and that is Made in Princeton. The Princeton & District Chamber of Commerce will be rolling out a Made in Princeton initiative that will help showcase local artisans, craftspeople and other made in Princeton talents. The Princeton & District Chamber of Commerce is committed to building a stronger business community within Princeton.

A partnership between China Ridge Trails, the Town of Princeton and Cooper’s Foods provided residents with a free fun day to celebrate B.C. Family Day on Monday, Feb 10. Visitors to China Ridge were treated to free skiing, snowshoeing and tobogganing fun. Volunteers from China Ridge Trails made sure everyone was outfitted properly for the sport of their choice and if needing lessons, were given those as well.
Encourage everyone to enter and increase your odds of winning in the random draw. Include a photo if you want – perhaps from your own hockey days, or a team photo or show us how excited your team would be to win 25 tickets to the Heritage Classic. Players, coaches, friends and family can enter on behalf of a BC minor hockey team.Â

carhartt SALE!

It’s no joke—The first set of traffic lights have been installed at the... landfill? The location of the lights is at the kiosk and are there to assist in controlling the direction of traffic and the entrance/exit of the scale system. The Ministry of Environment now requires that all sites provide weight of waste going into the landfill. In order to facilitate this, the use of the Princeton Landfill now includes a scale and requires patrons to adhere to the ‘rules of the road.’— Drive on the right side of the road. Upon entering the landfill, signs will direct you to the recycling station and the scale entrance. Once you have dropped off your recycling, enter the main road again and the red light will signal you to stop, then green to allow you to move forward to the scale. Once the weight of your vehicle is recorded, you will receive instructions to go ahead to the landfill area. Exiting the landfill will take place over the same route you entered, only on the opposite side of the road. Your vehicle will again be weighed before you exit the site. Barrie Fraser, scale kiosk operator asks that patrons have patience with the new system. “People are so used to being able to just come in and go, so the change will take a bit of getting used to,” he said. Fraser also suggested that “being more contentious about separating recyclables from garbage, would go a long way to reducing the amounts going into the landfill.” The lights and scale are phase one of the changes taking place at the Princeton Landfill. Future changes will be announced as they are implemented.

Breakfast in bed for your special Valentine
Mini Banana Blueberry Streusel Coffee Cakes Makes 8 to 12 individual coffee cakes Crumb Topping 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup sugar 4 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces 1/4 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1 cup fresh blueberries 1/4 cup chopped walnuts 2 large eggs 2 large bananas, mashed 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Powdered sugar In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar and butter for the topping. With a pastry cutter, cut in the butter until the size of peas.
Coffee Cake 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup sugar 11/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
CAPRICORN: Capricorn, your responsible nature helps those in your care to feel safe and secure. It is good to show others how much they mean to you, and you have been doing it correctly. AQUARIUS: Some well-hidden information could come to the surface, and you will have the ability to put it to use, Aquarius. Just don’t let the power go to your head. PISCES: Pisces, you must deal with a potentially delicate matter in the days to come. Keep a cool head and remain confident. ARIES: Aries, strange forces seem to be working against you, but fortunately you are prepared for anything that comes your way. Allow for some time to get things settled. TAURUS: Taurus, keep a firm hand on your wallet so you can avoid spending well beyond your means. It is best if you avoid making any impulse purchases in the near future. GEMINI: Gemini, listen carefully when a family member comes to you with some sage advice. Even a seemingly relaxed conversation may prove fruitful. CANCER: Cancer, you may seem rushed this week, but resist the temptation to go faster than is comfortable for you. Take your time so things are done right the first time. LEO: Leo, you may have so much fun this week that you don’t realize you have been getting work done in the process. Your attitude is even inspiring others around you. VIRGO: Take a step back when you don’t see eye to eye with a colleague, Virgo. Disagreements can quickly escalate, so keep a level head and take all things into consideration. LIBRA: Libra, your intuition and ability to work with people closely will make your life much more enjoyable. Make use of these talents as you pursue a new career path. SCORPIO: Falling into a slump just isn’t your style, Scorpio. Even if things don’t seem to be going your way, your attitude and work ethic will make the most of the situation. SAGITTARIUS: Sagittarius, playing games with someone can be fun, but don’t let things turn into a serious rivalry. Focus on being lighthearted this week. FOR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY

Reserve 1/2 cup of the mixture in a small bowl and add the walnuts and cinnamon; set aside. In the bowl with the remaining flour mixture, add the first nine coffee cake ingredients. In another bowl, beat together the eggs, bananas and vanilla until just mixed. Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Grease an 8-section mini loaf
pan or a 12-cup muffin tin with Baker’s Joy or vegetable spray. Divide the butter among the individual sections. Top evenly with the reserved crumb mixture. Bake on the middle rack of an oven preheated to 350 F. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until puffed and center is set. Cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar. PC132888
