100 Mile House and Surrounding Area
100 Mile House scored very early, and very late. Against the Kelowna Chiefs on Feb. 7, fans at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre barely had time to find their seats before the Wranglers sniped two goals in the opening minute. This added some cushion and helped carry a tough game with the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Okanagan Division leader into overtime. With a depleted lineup and three
affiliated players – Riley Harder, Rick Mack and Simon Kiiskila – in the game for the Wranglers, the local Junior B hockey club played Kelowna (31-14-0-3) to a much closer finish – 5-4 overtime loss – than their last meeting on Feb. 1, which was 8-2 defeat. “I was very impressed with our effort,” says coach Doug Rogers. “Of the regulars we dressed for this game, over half were either playing injured or had various stages of a cold or flu. “Although having a two-goal lead with four minutes left and then to lose in overtime is not the best result, it was a solid effort

given the circumstances of our lineup, illness, injuries and our opponent. To get the single point out of this game will be critical to our playoff positioning.” Bradley Williams, from Michael Lynch and Connor Sloan, scored for 100 Mile House less than 30 seconds after puck drop. Cole Zimmerman, from Stephen Egan and Tyson Levesque, followed that up less than 30 seconds later. Donovan Law, from Lane van de Wetering and Luke Santerno, added to the lead later in the period before the Chiefs answered late in the first frame, and notched the game’s only sec-
ond-period goal. Sloan, from Lynch and Williams, scored for the Wranglers with 8:28 left in the game, to take a 4-2 lead. Kelowna fired two home before regulation time expired, then scored with 1:56 left in the first overtime period. Against the Grizzlies in Revelstoke on Feb. 8, it was Lynch winning a face off in the Wranglers’ zone with 10 seconds left in a 1-1 game, and Law carrying the puck end-to-end and back-handing the winner with 0.6 seconds on the clock. Dry grad fundraiser successful
Ken Alexander Free Press
The 2014 grad class at Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School (PSO) was the big winner at the annual Grads versus Teachers hockey game at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre in 100 Mile House on Feb. 5. Not only did the grads knock off the teachers, but they also raised slightly more than $1,000 doing it. A good crowd, estimated to be around 200, got to see the grads and their opponents tied at nine apiece at the end of regulation time. That sent the two squads to a shootout to determine the winner, which was the young guns because they were first to score three goals. PSO shop teacher
Ken Alexander photo
Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School Grade 12 students Katelyn Raimundo, left, Carly Evans and Kaila Paterson cheered on their fellow grads during the first period of the annual Grads versus Teachers hockey game on Feb. 5
Chris Leflufy says the game was a lot of fun and he really enjoyed it. “You get to see [the students] in a different light and at a different venue. It’s just a really enjoyable change of pace.” Despite the cold temperatures, event organizer Darrell Blades says there was a decent
turnout for the dry grad fundraiser. He adds there were 45 grads involved with the hockey game, ranging from students who could hardly skate to some of the Junior B Wranglers who go to PSO. The grads had to be split into teams, and they had just as much fun as their opponents.
Donovan Law scores last second goal to lift Wranglers over Grizzlies From 1
The Wranglers (2320-0-6) outshot the Grizzlies (8-36-0-4) 61-25. With recent injuries and call-ups to different Junior A hockey clubs, 100 Mile House only dressed 18 players. Before Law’s lategame heroics, it was Williams, from Kiiskila, scoring in the second frame, before Revelstoke knotted the score 1-1 in the third. The Wranglers, currently second in the Doug Birks Division with 52 points - trailed closely by Chase (2422-0-2) with 50 and Sicamous (21-24-03) with 45 – play next in Lillooet against the Kamloops Storm (38-8-
0-1), which is the Doug Birks Division leader with 77 points, on Feb. 16. Santerno and goalie Kristian Stead will likely be playing with the Merritt Centennials of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) this weekend and will be unavailable for the game against Kamloops, Rogers says. Defenceman Jordan Low, who has been
playing with the BCHL’s Prince George Spruce Kings, is set to play against Kamloops. Robert Orrey and Braeden St. Louis are also probable to return. Mathieu Longhurst is unlikely for Sunday. Shane Doherty and Kevin Raimundo are not expected to play, while defenceman Henry Hart has been suspended two games for a major penalty.

There were 17 people on the teachers team – 10 associated with the
teaching staff, three RCMP members and five from the 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue – he notes. Blades says the game was also the kickoff for the grads next raffle, with the top prize being a seven-day fishing trip in Kitimat. The ticket draw will be on April 17, so he urges folks to get their tickets from one of the grads who will also be selling them at different venues around town. “There’s only 2,000 printed and they’ll go fast, so people should get them right away.”

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY tells the dark, hilarious and deeply touching story of the strongwilled women of the Weston family, whose lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. Letts’ play made its Broadway debut in December 2007 after premiering at Chicago’s legendary Steppenwolf Theatre earlier that year. It continued with a successful international run.
Lone Survivor tells the incredible tale of four Navy SEALs on a covert mission to neutralize a high-level alQaeda operative who are ambushed by the enemy in the mountains of Afghanistan. Faced with an impossible moral decision, the small band is isolated from help and surrounded by a much larger force of Taliban ready for war. As they confront unthinkable odds together, the four men find reserves of strength and resilience as they stay in the fight to the finish.

Don’t be powerless in a storm
Stormy, winter weather increases the chance of local power outages in British Columbia. Last year, more than 1,700 outages were caused by bad weather across the province. Four motor-vehicle incidents Local RCMP dealt with four MVIs on icy roads on BC Family Day
On Feb. 10, 100 Mile RCMP responded to four collisions in the 100 Mile House area. Three were on Highway 97 and one was in the 108 Mile Ranch. The increase in temperature and a skiff of new snow made the roadways icy. The first collision was on Highway 97 at Ainsworth Road, south of 100 Mile House. A south-bound grey Toyota Tundra impacted the rear of a semi-trailer when trying to pass, went across the road and ended up in the opposite ditch. The driver was taken to 100 Mile District General Hospital by ambulance for an assessment of minor injuries. There was no damage to the semi-trailer unit. The second collision was at the top of the 109 Mile Hill passing lane. A south-bound vehicle lost control after passing a semi-trailer and rolled, but came to rest on its wheels on the shoulder of the road. There were three occupants. One passenger, with non-life threatening injuries, was taken to hospital. The third collision was between two vehi-

The male driver involved in this single-vehicle rollover incident on Feb. 11 suffered minor injuries, but crawled out of his car and was taken to 100 Mile District General Hospital to be checked out. The incident occurred around 7:50 a.m. and 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue chief Darrell Blades says the driver was turning off Horse Lake Road onto Highway 97, slid into the abutment and flipped over.
cles on Kyllo Road in the 108 Mile Ranch. No injuries were reported and there was only minor property damages. The fourth incident involved a vehicle going into the ditch on Highway 97 near the 108 Mile Ranch. The vehicle was not damaged and there were no injuries. A tow-truck pulled the vehicle out and the driver continued on his way.

Public Advisory Notice Cariboo Region Lake Aerators
The British Columbia Conservation Foundation (BCCF), under contract to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, advises that commencing in December lake aerators will be in operation on: • Irish Lake • Skulow Lake • Simon Lake The purpose of the lake aeration program is to minimize fish mortality associated with reduced oxygen levels during the winter months on lakes at high risk. During periods of operation, the aerator units will create areas of open water and weak ice. The BCCF would like to remind residents to stay away from safety fencing placed around the aerators. Also, as a reminder to anglers, it is unlawful to fish within 100m of any active aeration unit (see pg. 10, BC Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis). Please direct questions or comments regarding aerator operation to: Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Williams Lake (Cariboo) 400 - 640 Borland St. Williams Lake, BC V2G 4T1 Telephone: 250-398-4530 Facsimile: 250-398-4214

Deflation in goods, service prices British Columbia’s consumer price index slipped into negative territory in November, partly due the repeal of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) last spring. The price index in Vancouver was up slightly, but deflation in Victoria and other areas of the province produced a provincial average of -0.2 per cent for the month. Canada-wide, inflation was 0.9 per cent. The cost of restaurant food fell 4.4 per cent in November compared to the same month in 2012, Statistics Canada reported. The provincial average cost of health and personal care, including services where sales tax was removed, went down 3.1 per cent. There were average price increases in food purchased from stores
up 1.1 per cent; clothing up 1.3 per cent; transportation up 0.7 per cent; and alcohol and tobacco products up 1.7 per cent. Average rent costs were up 1.0 per cent, but overall shelter cost was down 0.7 per cent – continuing a decline since mid-2012.
