AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter After Tuesday’s speech from the throne, Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes commended government on its “commitment to the economy.” “The Throne Speech outlines the commitment by our government to continue to build a strong economy and a secure tomorrow for families across the province and right here in Cariboo North,” Oakes said. Lieutenant-Governor Judith Guichon delivered the speech Feb. 11, highlighting the plan for economic development. “To follow through on economic development, you need a plan,” her speech read. Guichon then went on to showcase government’s five points to grow the economy: • First, to control spending and remain committed to fiscal responsibility. • Second, to open new markets and attract new investment. • Third, to leverage our existing strengths. • Fourth, to realize the incredible opportunity of LNG. • Fifth, to prepare British Columbians to be first-inline for job opportunities through skills training.” Oakes pointed to balancing the budget, controlled spending and seizing opportunities from natal gas and LNG as the government’s commitment to “making our province even better for all British Columbians for years to come.” The speech also looked at a skills training component, with a 10-year skills training plan for youth and workers looking to retrain. The plan has a kick start date of spring 2014 and also seeks to enhance the Industry Training Authority, as well as re-engineering secondary and post secondary institutions. “We have also made the commitment to invest in skills training; we will make sure that British Columbians will be first in line to accept the jobs and careers in forestry, mining, or new industries that are investing in B.C.” Oakes said. “I am excited for the upcoming session and I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue to bring forward the many issues and ideas from the constituents in Cariboo North to Victoria and to participate in many debates in the chamber defending our government and the leadership of our Premier, Christy Clark.”

ilderness traveller, photographer and lecturer John Dunn is returning to Quesnel’s Chuck Mobley Theatre, Feb. 20, bringing his latest presentation: Ellesmere Light, an innovative summer expedition across Canada’s northernmost island. However, this latest adventure was also an exercise in frugality, during which Dunn used as little equipment as possible. The 55-day journey began in mid-June with the expedition pulling a sled on the melting sea ice for 250 km, then attaching wheels to the sled hauling it overland for a further 250 km and finally hiking the equipment in for the last 250 km.
Vital pieces of equipment, including all their food, were an 800-gram tent and a 1.4kg boat. “It was amazing how little stuff one really needs in order to undertake such a challenging journey,” Dunn said. “Our journey was made easier by having to pull or carry less.” Dunn added people should not be defined by their stuff. Born and educated in England (he holds a geology degree), Dunn first went to work in mineral exploration in Australia before moving to Canada in the late 1980s. He says he comes by his wilderness wanderlust honestly, citing his parents’ around the world sail at the age of 65+. Dunn has a long association with Canadian Geographic. The Royal Canadian Geographical
Society has supported six of his expeditions and the magazine has published images and stories from five of those journeys. Dunn is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. Primarily, Dunn explores Canada’s high arctic, most recently his summer expedition to Ellesmere Island. After 20 arctic trips and more than 1,100 days in the field he still has the arctic bug and the desire to share his experiences through his images and lectures. “A journey along the treeline at the southern edge of the arctic would be interesting,” he said. “Also, an expedition in the Yukon too, perhaps. “But first I want to complete a journey I started many years ago – namely a traverse of Canada from south
(Vancouver Island) up to the top of Ellesmere. I have completed most of this but still have a few thousand kilometres of paddling, skiing and hiking to do.” Dunn takes great pleasure in sharing his experiences through public presentations. Although described by many as extreme, he prefers to begin with good planning, then being out on the land, working towards a distant and quite challenging goal. “As a photographer I enjoy the process of trying to record the experience and then subsequently sharing the adventure through richly illustrated presentations,” he added. He went on to say any outdoor adventure can be satisfying and exciting. “It depends so much on your skill level,
expectations and how much you want to challenge yourself,” he summed up. The presentation is sponsored by the Cariboo Ski Touring Club and Ron Watteyne said this is an opportunity for the public to see and hear about a part of Canada in the high arctic that most of us will never get a chance to experience. “The presentation will also open our eyes to the effects of global warming in the north,” he said. “John has been to Quesnel twice before to a sold out audience with his excellent picture and video presentation.” Tickets for Ellesmere Light are $10 in advance from Rocky Peak Adventure Gear, 337 Reid Street, or $12 at the door. The presentation begins at 7 p.m.

The 55 members of the Quesnel Rotary Club are part of a network of 1.2 million Rotarians in 34,000 clubs in 200 countries world-wide. Our membership roster is happily growing as we continue to welcome friends and colleagues from the Sunrise 2000 Rotary Club. Our club also sponsors a local Interact Club at Correlieu Secondary School, whose members are currently engaged in two projects: one will be for the benefit of our local community, while the other involves raising more than $5,000 for the “Shelter Box” disaster relief programme. We are particularly proud that Peter Gook, our senior member, continues in an honourary capacity as our charter member, since our club was granted its charter nearly 60 years ago in 1955. From Haiti and Greenland to Nigeria and Singapore, Rotary unites a truly diverse set of leaders from around the world. Currently, most clubs are in the United States, India, Japan and Brazil. The fastest growing Rotary regions
include Southeast Asia and Africa. No matter where we travel, as Rotarians we are welcomed into the clubs, businesses and homes of fellow members all around the world. We also welcome and host inbound exchange students from around the globe, as well as sponsoring outbound students from Quesnel. Our club has hosted students to and from Australia, Brazil, France, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, South Africa, Sweden and Switzerland. My wife Pat and I are looking forward to attending our Rotary “daughter” Paula’s graduation from law school in Brazil later this year. Many former exchange students, now married with families of their own, stay in touch with their Rotary “parents” for a lifetime. Launched in 1985, Rotary’s PolioPlus program continues as our priority global project, with a 99 percent reduction in polio cases worldwide, in partnership with the World Health Organization, UNICEF and others. To date, Rotary has contributed more than US$1.2 billion and countless volunteer hours to help immunize more than two billion children against polio in 122 countries. Currently, Rotary is working to raise $35 million
annually for polio eradication, which will be matched 2-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Rotary’s local community projects are numerous... funded in whole or in part over our nearly six decades of service. A few of these include the original Quesnel Civic Arena, Fraser Village, Child Development Centre, Quesnel Curling Club, Alex Fraser Park, Rotary Little League Ball Park, the Arts and Recreation Centre, West Fraser Timber Park, Royal Canadian Legion, Chuck Mobley Theatre, Quesnel Seniors’ Centre, Baker and Dunrovin Lodges, Women’s Resource Centre, Quesnel Museum, the Cenotaph, Lawn Bowling Greens, Horseshoe Club, and many more. In terms of financial support, our largest project to date was our five-year commitment to the Hospice unit with a single contribution of over $100,000. Even Quesnel’s sani-dump was a club project many years ago. For a complete list of Rotary projects, visit www. quesnelrotary.com and click on the “Service and Fellowship” tab. Homeowners have a new tool at their fingertips to help them better understand how their new home should perform and how their home warranty insurance works. The Residential Construction Performance Guide is available on the Homeowner Protection Office website www.hpo.bc.ca. It explains the basics of a well constructed home and how warranty providers evaluate claims for possible design, labour or material defects in new homes. Every new home built for sale by a licensed residential builder in B.C. is protected by mandatory third-party home warranty insurance. It’s the strongest system of construction defect insurance in Canada. This simple, practical guide outlines more than 200 possible defects that are searchable online. This includes the most common defect claims that might be submitted under a home warranty insurance policy – from windows that malfunction, to driveway or interior concrete floors that have cracked, to siding that has buckled. Designed primarily for conventional low-rise, wood-frame homes, the guide also provides some helpful guidelines for the common property of multi-unit buildings.
This Guide can be viewed on the B.C. government’s Homeowner Protection Office website.

Your move Harper
L
iberal leader Justin Trudeau surprised everyone recently— including most of his own party — by removing all the Liberal senators from his caucus and making them all independent. Trudeau declared that from now on the only way to be a part of the Liberal caucus is to be put there by the people of Canada. Of course we all know the struggles facing the archaic Canadian Senate in the past year — can we ever forget about the expense scandal? If Trudeau actually thought he would make changes for the better when he announced this decision, he should be applauded for his efforts. However, it’s hard to view the move as anything more than a publicity stunt and political suicide for Trudeau within his own party. Affected Liberal senators were asked their opinion on the decision. They all supported their former leader and said being labelled as Independents certainly wouldn’t stop them from thinking or acting like Liberals. Our point exactly –– what difference does it make if Trudeau declares his senators independent now? They will always be affiliated with the party that appointed them. Trudeau also said if he were prime minister he would task a non-elected, independent body to appoint independent, still non-elected senators. What? Not that current Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been any better at addressing senate reform. It will be interesting to see what Harper’s next move will be to counter Trudeau’s ambitious leap forward to take the country’s top job. – Black Press

ola and Charlie are our sweet, happy 30-pound Cockapoos. I realize they are fully grown adult dogs and no longer puppies, but they still act like the hilariously excitable baby beasts we welcomed into our home almost five years ago, so I still refer to them as pups. The brother and sister act have long been housetrained and they now come when they’re called – unless the bird, cat or dog they’re talking to outside is too intriguing to resist – but in other ways, they haven’t changed at all. When one of us humans wake up for a midnight tinkle, they awaken as well, ready to play. When someone takes the lid off the canine cookie jar, they come sprinting in like they’ve been starving for weeks. And when we walk through the front door, even if we’ve only been gone for a minute, they wiggle their bums and wag their tails so vigorously you can’t help but feel

On A Brighter Note loved and appreciated. Actually, loved and appreciated is putting it too mildly. Worshipped like a goddess would be a more accurate description of how I feel when they greet me. Wherever I go, Lola and Charlie are right at my feet – unless they’re playing with the kids or the husband’s home. If the big guy’s around, they barely notice the rest of us since they’re so head-over-heels in love with him. Car rides are the real kicker, though. It doesn’t matter where we’re taking them, they freak out like loud, spastic toddlers hyped up on sugar, about to enter Disneyland.
dogs and they completely idolize her. Every time I leave our pups at her kennel, I know they’re going to come home elated and exhausted. And I love it when they do. Cuddling them is always fulfilling, but in their tuckered out state it’s utter bliss. It seems like they’re reliving the memories of their day through their dreams as they twitch, moan and even swish their tails in their sleep. But as tired and zonked out as they get, it only takes a second for them to be fully awake and overflowing with joyful puppy-power again. If I could bottle their energy and pop it like a vitamin I certainly would. But just being witness to their zest for life brings more zip and zeal to mine and for that, I am doggone grateful. And every week or two, that’s kind of how a car ride ends up when we drop them off at doggy daycare so they can play with their furry friends. I’m not completely clear on what they do all day, but it’s definitely their version of dog utopia. Just pulling up to that place sets them into a complete tizzy as they bounce around the car yelping and whimpering with delight. And as soon as they see the owner of Charly’s Cottage Kennels walking out to greet us, they lose their little puppy dog minds. At the end of the day Charly will tell us who Lola and Charlie played with as they run circles around my car and jump in for the ride home. “We had a wonderful time,” she’ll tell us. No kidding, I’ll think. They look like they’ve been riding roller coasters all day. If I’ve ever known someone who’s ridiculously well suited for their job, Charly is it. She absolutely adores

The program that helps people help themselves
C
hronic diseases are on the rise and account for 84 per cent of the current national healthcare expenditure in the U.S. Nearly 18 per cent of the US Gross Domestic Product, or $2.7 trillion, is now being spent on healthcare. This is by far more than any other nation, but Canada is not far behind. Yet many of these chronic diseases have lifestyle underpinnings and are responsive to lifestyle modification. It is estimated that nearly 40 per cent of all cancer deaths and 82 per cent of cardiac deaths could be prevented. In addition, 71 per cent of colon cancer, 71 per cent of strokes and 91 per cent of the cases of diabetes could be avoided through appropriate lifestyle changes such as: adopting a simpler, healthier diet, following a consistent physical activity program and avoiding tobacco. The Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP) is an intensive community-based lifestyle intervention educational program that has been shown
to offer significant benefits for the prevention, control and even reversal of cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, stroke, some cancers, hypertension and depression. This program is largely attractive to middle-class people. But people of all classes, ages and interests are looking to improve their health and so almost every person in our society could and would benefit from the program. It is inexpensive yet very comprehensive in its nature and content and some feel even exceeds the content and expectations of the resident programs that it mimics and for a fraction of the cost. Instead of learning to live in some other controlled environment (eg. resident program facilities), CHIP teaches us how to implement better choices in the context of our own homes, with our families helping and taking part so they too may enjoy a healthier, longer, happier life. Several of our Quesnel CHIP graduates have reduced their risk of heart attack by more
than 80 per cent and in fact have joined the ranks of those referred to by some as “Heart Attack Proof.” I like the sound of that and want to stay in that category. On taking the course myself, my cholesterol dropped from “dangerously high” to “perfectly normal” within 28 days and I would recommend the program to anyone, especially those having heart issues or who may be on statin drugs, as you may be able to avoid taking them. If I do not need the medication to sustain good health, I am not interested in paying for them, nor am I interested in living with the side effects. Last year in the 2013 Quesnel CHIP program, 70 per cent of our participants lost five pounds or more. The average blood pressure drop was 7 per cent. Cholesterol dropped dramatically and activity levels increased. Five of our 24 CHIPPERS dropped their cholesterol by more than 20 per cent in just 30 days, better than most medications do in

three months and at a tremendous PharmaCare saving, to say nothing of the saving in side effects from drugs. The average drop in cholesterol for the group was 13.2 per cent, which translates to 39.6 per cent drop in risk of heart attack. Again, this result is as good as medication can achieve, but in a far shorter period of time and with no side effects and no cost. One participant reduced his total cholesterol by a whopping 41.9 per cent. That is a 100 per cent drop in risk of heart attack. Another person had an LDL (bad Cholesterol) of 3.69, or high at the start of the program. At the
end of the program, however, it was down to 1.46 or a decrease of 55.6 per cent representing a 100 per cent reduction in risk of heart attack. Healthier, happier people graduated from our CHIP program. Pay the Mortgage or Contribute to an RRSP? It’s a common dilemma for many Canadians – should you pay down your mortgage or contribute to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) instead? Unfortunately, there’s no easy or definitive answer. What works for one person may not work for another. It all depends on your particular circumstances, plus factors related to economic conditions and developments in the financial markets. To help you determine what might be right for you, here are some issues to consider. Interest rates – How much will you save by paying down the mortgage? You might find historically low interest rates to be a factor in favour of investing in an RRSP. That’s because paying off a low-rate mortgage doesn’t offer the same level of savings as paying off a higher-rate mortgage. But remember that as rates move up, mortgage savings could take on renewed importance. Higher rates mean higher interest costs, which means you’ll probably save more by reducing or eliminating your mortgage principal. When it’s time to renew at higher rates, you’ll have less of an outstanding mortgage. Investment returns – How much can you earn on your investments? Remember, an RRSP boosts returns by allowing your investments to grow within a tax-deferred environment. And don’t forget the immediate tax break your annual RRSP contribution provides. You need to determine whether the returns from a lump sum put into your RRSP will be greater than the amount saved by paying down the mortgage. This decision needs to be shaped by a long-term view, looking at both interest rates and investment returns. Other debt – If you have high-interest debt such as credit card balances, it usually makes sense to pay that off before focusing on your mortgage or RRSP. Your age – Remember that contributions to an RRSP at an early age can make a big difference in helping you reach your long-term financial goals. The earlier you get money into a retirement plan, the longer it will have to grow in a tax-deferred manner. Other retirement income – If you have a workplace pension that will help finance retirement, or other sources of future income, it may make more sense to pay down the mortgage. Once the mortgage is paid off, you can concentrate on your RRSP. Missed RRSP contributions – RRSP rules allow you to make up for missed contributions. If you have unused contribution room from past years, that’s another consideration to take into account. Again, you’ll need to assess whether the returns after making up for those missed contributions will be greater than the amount saved by paying down the mortgage. Also remember that the mortgage-versus-RRSP decision does not have to be “either-or.” The best scenario for many people is contributing to an RRSP as well as paying down the mortgage. For example, you could make your RRSP contribution each year, and then pay down a portion of the mortgage principal using the tax refund generated by your RRSP contribution. Consult with your financial advisor to help you weigh your options and choose a course of action that makes the most sense for you. Edward Jones, Member Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

Buyer beware of puppy mills and conditions for the dogs
A
ccording to No Puppy Mills Canada, a mill is defined as a high-volume, substandard breeding operation that generally distributes animals through pet stores and online. They are known for breeding animals with genetic defects because of frequent inbreeding when owners attempt to create a certain breed, colour or size
ters. They too were undernourished and mentally unstable. On seizure day, the animals were put into pens and transferred to town in any vehicle
that was available. It was a challenging situation because when the last one was removed, the count was more than 80 dogs.
In addition to basic health and hygiene care, they would also need reconditioning to become ‘normal’ dogs. Fortunately grand-
parent Eyfords had recently purchased a house with kennels and dog runs – a former grooming place. Up to 50 of those dogs were placed
with them. In time, as the dogs were ready for adoption, they were re-homed. Despite the trauma of the move, it was
the best outcome possible for these animals. Liz-Anne Eyford is a volunteer with Crooked Leg Ranch.

of dog. Animals are force bred and often contract diseases that go untreated. The mills are unreliable for providing accurate certification, background information and adequate follow up care. The main purpose is profit. There are puppy mills all across our country because Canada does not have legislation that limits or controls these operations. This is the story of one mill that was closed down about 10 years ago. One winter, a neighbour was the first person to alert authorities to the presence of a puppy mill with concerns about cruelty to animals. When officials made their inspection, they found horrid conditions and issued orders to improve conditions. The operators failed to comply with any of the orders so it was decided to seize the animals. Cold weather made the seizure imperative. Dogs were being kept in an unheated barn which had pens that held groups of dogs that were segregated by size, gender and temperament. There could be up to ten dogs in a pen. These were mainly the small varieties. It was found that the pens had not been cleaned out for far too long and that feces were caked on the floor. The larger dogs, spaniels and collies, were kept outside, in pens that had no shel-

A piano lives on Trish Simpson photos
ou would have to see our classroom to believe it. With two classroom libraries, computer stations, peer work tables, three fish tanks, hanging plants, two teachers and two education assistants and 27 Grade 6/7 students, you can only imagine the reaction when we told people we were adding a grand piano to our space. We were at a regular monthly meeting when Cathy Heinzelman, the Vocal Director for the Quesnel Festival of the Performing Arts, presented her plan: to give new life to a baby grand piano that had been donated to the Quesnel Festival of the Performing Arts. This piano, constructed in the early 1900s, was irreparable: it was no longer stable on its legs; no longer able to be tuned; bound for an ignoble end. Cathy just could not see it ending up at the dump! She imagined other possibilities. Cathy enlisted the expert help of Matt Arnott, the piano technician from Kamloops who comes to Quesnel to help maintain the Grand Piano housed at Correlieu and the artistic talents of Teresa McCart, a Grade 6/7 teacher at École Baker. With their help Cathy planned to transform this beautiful baby grand piano into works of art, while educating students about the working mechanisms of a piano – throw in a music history lesson and give students tools with which to deconstruct a large complex instrument and you have excitement. When does one ever have the chance

to check out the “guts” of a grand piano? To be given permission to take the whole thing apart – awesome! The day Matt came to our class, students were invited to learn about the history of the piano, right back to the Harpsichord of the 1400s and learned about the progressive changes made to the construction of pianos. Students participated in the careful deconstruction of the pieces (to be used in subsequent art projects) and also had an interactive science lesson about sound waves; did you know the tuning fork vibrates 330 times/second and when dipped in a bowl of water creates a spray of water like a fountain? Matt even threw in a piano concert of classical music to enhance the morning. Such excitement, but to what end? It is Cathy’s vision, for the Grade 6/7 class at École Baker to fulfill, that the old piano be reconstructed into a piece of art. Any of you who know Teresa McCart know that there is never a halfway. This beautiful piano may be turned into an amazing wall mounted bookshelf, a coffee table, a whirligig, wind chimes or even a garden wall. The beautiful 100 year old wooden piano will live on in many new forms. It is Cathy’s vision that these art projects might become fundraisers for the Quesnel Festival of the Performing Arts and that students are enriched in the experience. – submitted by Ecole Baker Grade 6/7 teacher Trish Simpson

Ross McKenzie Robinson April 10, 1930 ~ February 8, 2014
Ross was born April 10, 1930 in Bethany MB. and moved to Scandinavia, MB at a very early age. There were five boys and three sisters. He felt blessed with a wonderful mom and dad, having love and attention from both parents. Ross attended Bethany high school, then went to work for the Department of Mines and Resources in Clear Lake, MB. A place of golfing, fishing, roller skating and curling, which he loved. There he and his crew built the Bowling Greens, worked on the Wishing Well, Golf course, Lakeside Ward and so on. After Wasagaming National Park,Ross worked in Winnipeg for the McDonald Aircraft building pontoons for Beaver Aircraft. A very technical type of job that he really enjoyed. Then it was off to Quesnel, British Columbia, where he spent the rest of his life, working at various employment. He ran heavy
equipment, had a janitorial cleaning business, then retired as a carpenter. Ross is survived by his first wife Gloria and three children Gini, Carl and Susan, his present wife Bessie Robinson and stepchildren; Andy, David and Mark. Also numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. His siblings Thelma Hince and Carl Robinson from Manitoba are still with us. He is predeceased by mom Burnette and dad Joseph, siblings; Colin, Frank, Sadie, Ivan, Jean and stepdaughter Wendy. Ross’s wish was to be placed with his Mom and Dad. A service will be held at the Neepawa, Manitoba Cemetery Gravesite on June 01, 2014, officiated by Rev. Ed Loucks of the United Church. A Celebration of Life will follow at a community hall in Minnedosa, MB. Rest in Peace Ross, you were truly loved.

Dearest Ross I loved you in the morning And loved you in the night. I loved you when you were wrong As much as when you were right. I loved you when you were up And even when you were down. I loved you when you smiled And felt badly when you frowned. I loved those wonderful ways You showed me that you cared. I loved the safe feeling Of knowing you were there. You could always make me smile With the things you said and did. And that smile was made with love, The love I feel for you! Sincerely, Bessie

Diversity Day event in Spirit Square Feb. 26
Mark your calendar for a special event. Feb. 26 is Diversity Day, which is recognized with the wearing of pink shirts and other activities in our school and community that promote tolerance and acceptance of diversity and a common stand against bullying behaviour.
École Baker students will be performing a diversity theme dance to the song We Can, by Jesse Ruben. The performance will be highlighted by using sign language to coordinate with the lyrics of the chorus. Students from École Baker have been practic-
ing this song with a student led dance/choreography crew for a month. The song speaks about belief in self, belief in others and the power of “we” to make a difference in our school community, in our families and in the world. Our school diversity theme this year is: I can-

Harley Gilks makes his move on the Stamps goalie. Karen Powell photo
Living on the edge
‘Roos slip past Stamps in first of the series JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter It was close. It's been close. During these playoffs, the 'Roos have lived in close, have made a living room there and gotten comfortable and once again, the 'Roos manage to squeeze close into a harrowing win. "It was quite the game," acting-coach Bob Marsh said. That's just what they did this weekend in their first game against the Williams Lake Stampeders which means they lead the series and maybe things won't get as close this time. 7-6. That was the win. Thirteen goals scored and a one point spread for the last ten minutes of the game. The raucous crowd was in it, full of nervous energy; Bob Marsh was behind the bench doing his best to keep any one from stalling out; and every player was pushing hard but not too hard lest they get a penalty. Nervous times out there on the ice. The beginning of the game, however, was something different.
"We came out strong," Marsh said. Even so, it took the 'Roos just over six minutes of intense play before Harley Gilks go his first of the night with the help of Joel Boyetchko and Curtis Gassoff. They held the lead for another eight minutes, until Jassi Sangha put one past Ryan Manderson to tie it up, setting the tone for the game. But after a relatively slow start on the scoreboard, the 'Roos were ready to light it up and put two in during the sixteenth minute of play, with Gilks netting his second of the night, and Gassoff credited with the helper,. Rigby Burgart got his first of the night, and second of the period, with Justin Fulton getting the assist. The Stamps' Nathan Zurak put an end to the roll before it got out of hand, late in the period, making it a one goal game with less than two minutes left in the period. Not thirty seconds later Tyrel Lucas brought the game to an even score, with help from David Gore and Darcy Flaherty.
Coming into the second, Justin Fulton sparked a run of goals less than thirty seconds into the period, netting the first goal of the period at 24 seconds with the help of Burgart. Gilks was next , putting in his third of the night at 8:51 to give the 'Roos some breathing room, with Gassoff and Boyetchko getting the nod for the assist. Matt Stang, with Paul Girodat, gave the 'Roos enough rope with another goal at 9:36. And, much like in the first, the Stamps pushed back, lead by Zurak, who got his second and third of the night in the last five minutes of the period. He netted the first at 15:52, with Francis Johnson assisting and the second a minute and a half later on the power play, with Andrew Fisher and Tyler Fuller getting the nod for the assist. At the end of the second. The 'Roos were back where they shine, in the midst of a battle. The third opened up with the 'Roos back in the fight and with that energy pushing him, Matt Powell scored just less than two minutes into the period,
with help from Gassoff and Gilks. Seeing their chance to win swiftly fading, Williams Lake's Matt Lees put one in at the halfway point of the period, with help from Nathan and Andrew Zurak to make it a one goal game once again. This time, however, the 'Roos weren't going to let the Stamps come back, killing a penalty and keeping the Stamps goalless when they pulled their goalie. It wasn't for lack of trying the Stamps couldn't score, however, with 48 shots on net, Manderson saw a lot of action in the crease, but blunted the impact with some great saves. This weekend, the 'Roos will take the fight to Williams Lake for their second and (hopefully not) third game of the series. The 'Roos hope you can join them on the road to cheer them on in Williams Lake this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. A third game, if necessary, will take place in Williams Lake at 1 p.m. In the other series, the Smithers Steelheads play the Terrace River Kings. Smithers currently leads 1-0.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The Correlieu ski and snowboard teams, along with members from QJS took on the best from the zone, with the boys ski and snowboarding teams ploughing their way on to provincials in Whistler. “It was a great performance by the entire team,” teacher-sponsor Mark Forsythe said. The Correlieu boys ski team, made up of Chris McGauley, Matt Paul, Brody Lawlor, Ben Johannesen and Devin Longeway placed second at the ski meet. McGauley helped pull the team into second with a great performance which earned him the honour of being the second fastest male skier at zones. The Correlieu boys’ snowboard team of Jared Lucas, Brandon Drewcock, Dylan Cathcart, Kyle Mannering and Ryan Wilson managed to crack the top three as well, finishing third at the meet. Lucas managed to make it into second over all, taking the second fastest time of all the male snowboarders. Naomi Hunt took third in the girl’s category, snagging herself a position in Whistler as a lone wolf. Also making Whistler lone wolf-style was Ryan Elden, from QJS, The teams and individuals will be making their way down south to Whistler in early March, competing with the best the province has to offer March 3 – 5.

Looks Last year, Nissan introduced the bigger mid-sized Pathfinder SUV and this smaller Rogue shares many styling cues from its bigger brother. This, in my opinion, is a good idea. It has a sense of purpose, sophistication and commonality that helps define Nissan’s brand. Nissan wants to portray “everyday premium” with this new Rogue, including such nice touches as LED daytime running lights, wheel arch extensions, integrated mirror turn
7-passenger SUV. Granted, the third row is tight but perfect for those occasional times when extra family members are in town. In addition, this package includes navigation, a 7-inch touch screen monitor, power lift gate, blind-spot detection system, and lane departure warning system. These really are premium features found only in luxury SUVs just a few short years ago. Unfortunately, the top SL trim is only available in a two-row 5-seat configuration because

it was felt the price would be too high for compact SUV buyers. Drive As hard as it might be to believe, this new, larger and slightly heavier (49kg) Rogue is actually more fuel-efficient than the last model. They were able to improve the economy by 18 per cent through the introduction of a new continuously variable transmission (CVT), aerodynamic tricks, and letting the carried-over engine breathe a bit better. Still rated at 170hp, the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine does a good job in city driving, thanks to the gearing of the new CVT but can seam a bit underpowered for higher, passing manouevre on the highway. Overall, the person filling the new Rogue up with fuel will welcome this balance of efficiency and everyday drivability. As part of the winter driving experience, I drove on an ice course in Macaglisse, Que., to highlight the vehicle’s stability system and the Active Trace Control feature. On the first run, through the twisty, sheer ice roads the entire system was shut off. As I crested a hill, then made a hard right turn, the Rogue slid all
the way out to the edges of the corner, almost hitting the opposing snow bank. On the second run, with the advanced systems on, the same road was almost uneventful. The stability and traction control kept the wheels from spinning but the Trace Control System provides just a slight amount of brake force to the inside wheels to help the Rogue navigate the sheet ice with confidence. Verdict The objective with this new Rogue was to be noticed and provide a level of refinement and creature comforts that the competition isn’t providing. The pricing is fantastic, especially the middle SV models. The larger interior dimensions will always be welcome, as buyers like to get more for their money, but it is still small and efficient enough for city buyers.
Safety Tip: Distracted driving is the third leading cause of car crash fatalities in our province, which is why police are out in full force this month as part of a province-wide distracted driving campaign. According to one recent study, texting while driving makes you 23 times more likely to be in a crash.

Adventures in leaving Detroit and trusting your GPS ‘‘
After the excitement of the 2014 North American International Auto Show, I was looking forward to the long and painfully boring drive back . . . my wish was not yet coming true.
’’
Alexandra Straub
The digital road sign above warned: “Changing Roads Ahead. Do not rely solely on GPS.” I felt like it was speaking directly to me as I had suffered anxiety ever since Driveway editor Keith Morgan climbed into the Jeep Cherokee and we left downtown Detroit, heading north to Toronto. North, ahem, yes. The tunnel to Canada was a stone’s throw away from our launch point. I was thinking it would route me the same way I
got down to Motown, via Windsor and through the tunnel. Why the GPS didn’t? – I’m not sure. Clearly it knew something we didn’t. Needless to say, the mechanical woman’s voice echoing through the premium speakers certainly did give us a scenic tour of the area. And by scenic I mean, she guided us through some rather dodgy areas, characterized by poorly maintained roads, broken down buildings and dejected looking people. After the excitement of the 2014 North American International Auto Show, I was looking forward to the long and painfully boring drive back. (That’s before Keith hitched a ride, honest.) My wish was not yet coming true. Finally, we were on some sort of highway. But no signs to a border popped up for miles and miles. We even pulled over a couple of times in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited to check our smartphones to see if we were heading in the right direction. We were, but I guess I was just looking for a sign. A sign that said “Canada” on it.
But no, we got this instead: “State Prison Nearby. Do NOT Pick Up Hitchhikers.” Gulp. Keith and I looked over at each other and laughed nervously. Oh gosh, what have we gotten ourselves into? – Regardless, we were in it together so it was bound to be eventful. I forgot to mention, my fuel was getting low, too, and I had a flight to catch out of Pearson. No need to panic, I think. When you’re in these kinds of situations, you say things that you normally wouldn’t say. “I will be so happy when we are back in Ontario,” is a phrase not often uttered by a B.C. resident. But it fell from my lips. Desperate times call for desperate measures, right? The one thing that remained steadfast and calm throughout the craziness was the Jeep Cherokee. The leather-trimmed seats were plush and comfortable to sit in for hours on end. When I started veering off the straight and narrow – aka out of my lane – the lane departure warning would gently lead me back into place.
And since it was frigid outside – Ontario and Michigan in January is anything but tropical – features like a remote starter, heated seats, a heated steering wheel and dual climate zone controls keep occupants toasty warm. Not to mention there was a generous amount of power being delivered from its 3.2L, Pentastar V6 engine, which is rated at 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque. It’s then linked to a 9-speed automatic
transmission. And with 4x4 capabilities, I was ready to brave the winter conditions, on bare roads or not. Luckily, it was a beautiful day, with few clouds in the sky and clear roads. Things were looking good. Then it happened. A sign. A sign to Canada nonetheless. Looks like we’d been routed through Sarnia. I was doing a little happy dance on the inside. Did I doubt the GPS’s ability to lead? I sure did.
Then again, it’s not out of my character to question authority. As we handed the CBSA our passports, all I could think about was finding a fuel station before we got stranded. And yes, I was very happy to be in Ontario. But I’d be happier when I knew I was on a plane to Vancouver. Yet, I was thoroughly enjoying my time in the Cherokee, quirky styling and anxiety aside. It had an ability to somewhat calm my woes due
to its temperate nature. The quiet cabin allowed for wonderful conversations, whether it was with myself, with the GPS or with Keith. In addition, I managed to learn a lot from road signs. I will not wholeheartedly rely on the GPS and will not pick up hitchhikers in Michigan. www.jeep.ca Alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Harsh unwanted vibrations at the steering wheel are eliminated and the driver can choose, using a four-mode selector, the amount of steering effort and response that he or she prefers. DAS can also interact with other handling systems such as Infiniti’s Active Lane Control system, which makes the Q50 feel like it is “magnetized” within a traffic lane. An electronic actuator moves the steering rack, in response to steering wheel inputs by the driver, and turns the front
wheels, during normal operational. It provides a faster and more precise steering response. DAS also has a triple-mode (three control units) clutch feature that instantly defaults it to a fail-safe mechanical steering linkage, if electrical power is cut. The Best New Safety Technology award went to Infiniti’s Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW) technology. This system can warn a driver of a potential collision risk that actually lies beyond a driver's normal field of view. PFCW not only monitors movement of a vehicle that’s directly ahead in the same traffic
lane, it can also (mystically) monitor a vehicle (two cars ahead) in front of the vehicle directly ahead. PFCW can be particularly useful when following a large vehicle that obstructs forward vision like a delivery truck or a bus. Distance Control Assist sensors warn the driver to begin braking when it detects either one of the vehicles ahead are decelerating or braking at a rate beyond a certain threshold. The warnings consist of a visual alert in the Q50’s instrument cluster, an audible warning, and what’s call a “haptic” feedback warning, by tightening the seatbelt. If the driver ignores all of those warnings a collision intervention system kicks-in and applies the brakes. The maximum range of the PFCW system is about 250 meters, but there are a lot of variables that might reduce its effectiveness. An important one is the amount of ground clearance offered by the vehicle directly ahead, as the low-mounted PFCW radar unit has to be able to see under it. More information on these technologies and the new Infiniti Q50 sports sedan, AJAC and the Best New Technology Award entries and voting procedures can be found at AJAC.ca bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Drives-U-Crazy Cross A Chilliwack readers asks: When did it become okay to turn left, over a solid yellow line, or a double solid line to whip in for groceries? – These clowns also do not seem to care if traffic is backed up behind them for blocks; they seem to think their time is more important than that of others. It’s NOT illegal to turn left across such lines as long as the manoeuvre does not cause back-ups as described by the reader. What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
Arty take on the Vancouver International Auto Show This year’s winner of the Vancouver International Auto Show poster contest breaks new ground using abstract imagery in its design. Vancouver’s Trish Jodoin designed the 2014 poster and explained the concept: “I wanted to present a poster that would reflect both the Vancouver setting and the excitement of cars themselves “Rather than choose the usual downtown skyline shot for Vancouver, I think the blurred background evokes a rainy city street at night, which is a wonderfully typical Vancouver sight. The slightly abstract lights in the front suggest two vehicles passing each other. I also think these lines subtly echo the graphic in the Vancouver Auto Show’s logo.” Jodoin received $1,200 for her winning design. The Vancouver International Auto Show takes place March 25-30, 2014 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. vancouverinternationalautoshow.com

Shakespeare famously asked, “What’s in a name?” Frankly, in the automotive world, a hell of a lot. It’s difficult to imagine a Corvette called anything else. Yet, it’s not on my list of cool names because prior to its application to America’s sports car, a corvette was a not-quite-a-destroyer type of small anti-submarine boat. The name only became cool after the Corvette became a success (which didn’t exactly happen overnight). These six car names are just cool. •Mercury Marauder: The name conjures up bands of roving barbarians. In addition to providing basic transportation, who wouldn’t want a car that’s also proficient at looting and pillaging? •Ferrari 500 Superfast: Even in the early 1960s, using this name took cojones —something that Enzo Ferrari never lacked. It’s almost over-thetop comical, not unlike Wile E. Coyote’s business card, which listed his occupation As venomous as “Super Genius.” One can snakes go, Cobras are only imagine the response of today’s product liability wicked cool. lawyers to this one. Rob Sass •Ford Mustang: While the association with the car doesn’t hurt, the name Mustang was cool long before the car debuted in April 1964. Whether it’s the war-winning fighter plane the P-51 Mustang or the wild horse (the car was actually named for the former), it’s just plain cool. •Shelby Cobra: As venomous snakes go, Cobras are wicked cool. The whole hood thing, their exotic origins and their highly concentrated venom make your ordinary rattlers and water moccasins seem, well, ordinary. It makes for one of the all-time great hood badges, too. •Plymouth Barracuda: As fish go, after the shark, the barracuda is arguably the most badass. Beautifully streamlined, highly aggressive and possessing a mouthful of piranha-like teeth, it’s possibly one of the most evocative names for a performance car ever. And while Mopar fans worship the way later cars were simply called the ’Cuda, we remain fans of the full name. •Aston Martin Vanquish: Vanquish is generally defined as follows: To utterly defeat; soundly thrash or beat; to overpower, subjugate or subdue. Enough said.
