Kimberley cull delayed because traps stolen Deer Protection Society circulating anti-cull flyers
C A R O LYN G R A N T Daily Bulletin
The BC Deer Protection Society out of Invermere is hitting Kimberley with flyers this week as the City’s permitted cull has been delayed because of the theft of government-owned clover traps.
Kimberley Mayor Ron McRae confirmed that the cull hasn’t begun yet, primarily because of the incident this week where the clover traps were stolen from the Ministry building in Cranbrook, with some
being destroyed. “We are still on track but we can’t proceed without the traps,” McRae said. “It’s not going to deter us but obviously it will slow us down.” The traps are owned by
the provincial government. McRae was planning to meet with a ministry representative Thursday afternoon to discuss the permit time frame. The flyers being circulated label Kimberley as a good
place to waste tax dollars on killing deer and calls Kimberley the deer culling capital of B.C. Kimberley currently has a permit to carry out a cull of up to 30 mule deer — 15 from Marysville and 15 from Lower Blarchmont/Chapman Camp. They also had a
permit to remove 100 deer two years ago. The BC Deer Protection Society is the same group that is involved in the law suit against the District of Invermere for its deer cull.

Kindergarten research tool needed, school district says SD5 board is urging the B.C. government to continue annual research of children for the Early Development Instrument S A L LY M AC D O N A L D Townsman Staff
The School District board is asking the B.C. government to continue the same level of funding for what it considers an essential research tool for kindergarten-aged children. Each February, kindergarten teachers in East Kootenay schools fill out a 104-question form for each of their students. These anonymous forms are used by UBC’s Human Early Learning Partnership to put together a report that reveals population-level trends for children by province, region and neighbourhood. The research tool is called the Early Development Instrument (EDI). “We’ve been using the EDI in our district for 10 years,” said Frank Lento, chair of the School District 5 board of trustees, adding that
SD5 was one of the first in B.C. to use the data. “As a result, we’ve been better able to plan for supports for children in school and have also worked closely with community partners to improve opportunities for children to access early childhood programs.” The EDI is jointly funded by the B.C. Ministries of Education, Health and Children and Family Development. But Lento said that earlier this year, SD5 was told the B.C. government will no longer fund annual testing. Instead, teachers will fill out the forms for every third kindergarten class, after next year. UBC recommends that school districts with smaller kindergarten classes participate each year for accurate results.

Local tech sends skis to Sochi Kimberley’s Scott Reid helps prepare gear for Canadian Olympic ski crossers T R E V O R C R AW L E Y Townsman Staff
While Canadian ski cross athletes prepare for Olympic glory in Russia next week, they could potentially be sporting some equipment with a Kimberley connection. With the warm temperatures in Sochi presenting a
challenge on the slopes and the effects on snow conditions, the national ski cross team sent some custom-made skis to Kimberley’s Scott ‘Scooter’ Reid for some work. Reid, a ski technician who is a familiar face at the upper echelons of Alpine Canada,
has past Olympic experience, working with the ski cross athletes at the Vancouver Olympic Games in 2010. With the Canadian ski cross athletes on the World Cup circuit in the fall leading up to the Sochi Games, they simply didn’t have the time to put in the necessary work to
set up the skis. That’s where Reid came in. A former racer turned coach turned ski technician, Reid was given a contract to get about a dozen pairs of skis ready for possibility of warm conditions on the slopes.

t’s 2014. The world has changed considerably in the last century. The earth is home to some seven billion people, and that number is expected to balloon to nine billion by 2050. With the melting of the polar ice caps, global warming has become a household phrase. Our outlook isn’t bleak yet, but it’s steadily becoming obscured by the smog. It seems only appropriate, then, that during a new age of ecological scrutiny, Mount Baker Wild Theatre should stage a production of Urinetown the Musical. Wait … it’s called …
what? No, no: that really is the title. The show, which was written in 2001 by Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis, is everything from a comedy, to an agitprop, to a satire. The plot unfolds in a dystopian future; a 20-year-long water shortage has rendered private toilets unthinkable. People pay to get their business done by way of “public amenities,” or public toilets. The musical follows the story of Bobby Strong, a young amenity worker who revolts against the powers that be in order to free the enslaved bladders of the land. The production was
inspired when Greg Kotis, the book-writer, took a tour of Europe. At the time a student on a budget, Kotis was fascinated by his encounters with pay toilets. He brainstormed the idea of a story that centred around a world in which the most seemingly base of needs was governed by cash. Mark Hollman soon came aboard to write the score, and the show was on its way to

Broadway. Perhaps not surprisingly, if one takes the brilliant score and hilarious book into account, the show was a smash hit; it ran for 25 previews, and 965 performances. Urinetown eventually won Tony awards for best book of a musical, and best original score, not to mention a nomination for best musical. Yes, we’ll admit that the title is, perhaps, a little unconventional. We’ve been asked if we’re joking, or to clarify if the title is actually “You’re in Town.” Considering the seeming nonsense of the show, it hasn’t been unusual for people to flatly dismiss Urinetown as inevitably atrocious. To some, the idea of a show whose subject matter is fecal matter sounds plainly impossible. It is the antithesis of what people

have come to expect from a Broadway show, and it is a musical that, by all reasonable logic, should not succeed. Logic, thank heaven, rarely touches the theatre. Urinetown manages to combine uproarious humour with an implausible plotline, all the while exploring what our society has come to justify as necessity. It is a notso-gentle reminder of what flippancy towards our ecosystem can do, but it is also raucously entertaining, and not to be missed. If a Broadway musical can be classified as an underdog, this one certainly fits the bill. But, just as in any daring dramatic scenario, the underdog becomes the unlikely hero. Urinetown is a wickedly funny, charmingly resonant, and unexpectedly important show. Join us in celebrating its hilarity, and all it stands for. It’s one hell of a ride. Honestly. Sport Chek prepping for April opening A r n e P e t rys h e n Townsman Staff
The new Sport Chek store in Cranbrook will soon open its doors. Brendon Arnold, public relations for Sport Chek’s parent company FGL Sports, said the store is slated to open April 10 and will be looking to hire around 31 people in March. “We’re going to be doing a hiring fair from March 5 to 7,” Arnold said. The interview fair will be held at the Prestige. Arnold said the new store manager is Ryan Alvernini. “We’re super excited to be opening a new store in Cranbrook,” Arnold said. “Definitely one thing that we want

The Sport Chek building, under construction across from WalMart. to get out there to the readers of your publication and throughout Cranbrook is that we are really focused on the community.” Arnold said Sport Chek tries to integrate the community into the store. “We just want to
make people aware that this new Sport Chek is not just about product, it’s about getting the full experience,” he said, adding that may mean figuring out product fitment or having a customized shopping experience where the customer leaves the store
with not just a new pair of sneakers, but maybe contacts to a local running group. “So it’s not just about selling products, it’s about integrating within the community,” he said. Arnold said the Cranbrook store would
follow the look and feel of other Sport Chek stores. “For the most part with the new stores that we’re opening up, it’s going to have the same type of product as our other stores around Canada,” he said. “We never really bring in a
store that sells a really different selection of products; it’s going to be fairly similar to the different stores that you will see in Calgary or Vancouver.” Sport Chek recently opened its first flagship store in Edmonton, which features digital
displays and features. “The purpose of these stores is to test out and put in these new technologies and these new innovative and interactive units within the store which allow customers to get an even more customized experience,” he said. Arnold added that the company would be first implementing things in the flagships and then deciding on whether to bring them to stores like the one that will be in Cranbrook. “I can’t tell you what form that will (take) in the Cranbrook store, but it is on the radar for us to start rolling out some of these digital activations with our stores across the country,” he said.

An anti-deer cull flyer, a portion of which is pictured above, is circulating in Kimberley.
Submitted
Cull delayed because of stolen traps Continued from page 1 The flyers urge people to contact the mayor and tell him to stop the cull, giving out his direct line at city hall, his cell number and email. McRae says that the flyers came to the City’s attention early this week. They were put up around town and also on the windshields of cars at the Civic Centre. McRae says the flyers will be discussed with city staff and there will be some kind of response. “In the meantime,
the public needs to know what kind of tactics this group will go to to achieve their ends.” Devon Kazakoff of the Deer Protection Society says that his group is simply trying to bring awareness to the citizens of Kimberley as the City embarks on another cull. “The intent is to get the message out on what the city is planning to do and urge the Mayor not to go through with it. “We’ve found out it won’t start until the 15th
(of February). We are hoping to raise awareness and get it stopped.” Kazakoff says the society plans to be there in any community that tries to deal with deer in a way they consider inhumane. “Last year in Cranbrook they tried to push a cull behind closed doors. We found out and got it out to the public. We got a public apology. A city councillor even said that it was wrong. It’s not right to try to hide from people.” In Cranbrook, there
are no plans for a third deer cull at this point — there have been culls in 2011 and last year. But Cranbrook Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski decried the theft and destruction of government property, that being the traps. “Regardless of which side of the issue you’re on in regards to the cull, this is still a crime,” Stetski told the Townsman on Thursday. “It was theft – destruction of property – and it needs to be dealt with as a very serious police investigation.”
“Our EDI results contribute to a provincial picture of our children’s developmental needs. This is important because our provincial government benefits from understanding that we have many vulnerable learners who are entering our schools each year,” Lento said. “It’s unfortunate that access to such a valuable tool is being reduced simply on the basis of funding.” The EDI asks questions that measure early child development and predict adult health, education and social outcomes. Questions are broken into five categories: physical health and well-being; social competence; emotional maturity; language and cognitive development; and communication skills and general knowledge. The research helps
schools, community groups and government locate vulnerable children – those who need additional support so they don’t experience future challenges in school and society. In SD5, the data has helped in the past with StrongStart programs, Ready, Set, Learn events and preschool programs. In 2010, it was the EDI results that led the B.C. government to introduce full-day kindergarten, because it showed that preschool-aged children need to be better prepared to learn. In January, the SD5 board of trustees agreed to write to the B.C. government, imploring it to continue annual funding for the EDI tool. They followed it up at the Feb. 11 board meeting by throwing
their support behind a new tool, the Middle Development Instrument (MDI). It’s a similar tool that measures students in Grades 4 to 7 on a regional, community or school level, rather than individual test scores. Lento said the MDI would provide a much-needed window of understanding for schools, districts and the Ministry of Education to better respond to the unique developmental challenges middle-school students face. “The middle years are very important in a child’s development and overall student success. These are the years that most determine whether or not a student graduates grade 12,” said Lento. For more information on the EDI, visit www.earlylearning. ubc.ca/edi/.

Chamber calls for awards nominations
The Business Excellence Awards are back and better than ever with nominations now open through the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce. The awards recognize businesses that contribute to Cranbrook’s economic as well as social wellbeing, “businesses that uphold their community’s status as well as their business’s status,” said Linda Birch, a member of the newly formed Selection Committee. Businesses don’t need to be members of the Chamber of Commerce to win an award, but businesses that have won in the same category within the past two years can’t win again. There are nine categories, and you can nominate someone in one or all of these categories online until Wednesday, Feb. 26 at www.cranbrookchamber.ca.

The Customer Service Excellence Award recognizes any business that shows exceptional customer service, and relies on a customer base for the success of the business. Spring Honda won the award last year. The Business Person of the Year Award recognizes a torchbearer of change whose standards of excellence and personal style create opportunities for others. The category acknowledges someone who excels in all areas of business and displays leadership in the community. “The business person of the year award doesn’t have to be someone who only did something in 2013; it just happens to be that year’s award,” explained Birch. Last year’s recipients were David and Corey Spring. The Most Improved Business Image Award
looks for a business that made major improvements to their image in 2013, whether it is renovations to the business, new programs or improving the quality of their product or service. Last year, Kootenay Granite took home this award. There are two categories for Company of the Year: one for businesses with less than 16 employees, and one for businesses with 16 or more employees. This award is for businesses that have shown excellence in employee relations, customer service, vision, growth and productivity, product innovation and technology, and contributions to the community. In 2013, Living Stones Development won in the 16-plus category, and Sweet Gestures in the smaller business category. The Tourism Excellence Award, previously awarded to the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market,

In this GoGo Grannies-sponsored travelogue, John and Corrine Przeczek will focus on some of the highlights of
their safari and journey through South Africa including relaxing along the Indian Ocean, having a beer at the highest pub in Africa (2,874 m) and seeing the amazing diversity of animal and birdlife that only Africa can offer. Fabulous wildlife photography! Join the Cranbrook Grannies as they support grandmothers in Africa who have risen to become the linchpin of survival for their families and communities: they have become activists and advocates pushing for theirs and their grandchildren’s rights and protection; they are becoming small business owners in order to earn a living for their families.

The tradition of St. Valentine Roses are red, Violets are blue; Will you love me? Coz I sure love you. I still remember getting that Valentine card when I was so very young and still in school. Alas, this card came from a girl I had never noticed before. Sadly, it wasn’t from the girl I hoped would give me one. Ah ... such is unrequited love. Where does the custom of sending cards and gifts come from? Who was St. Valentine? And why do we send cards on his day? We’re not really sure who the good saint is. The best guess is that Valentinus was a priest in 3rd century Rome. The emperor Claudius II (‘the Cruel’) decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families. As a consequence, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine defied the emperor, and continued to perform marriages in secret. The emperor discovered his actions, and had him put to death on February 14, sometime around the year 270. According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself, to a young girl (possibly the jailor’s daughter) who would visit him in prison. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed, “From your Valentine”. Another legend is that at the same time
as Valentine lived, the Romans celebrated a festival called Lupercalia. One of the customs of this festival was that the names of young women would be written on slips of paper, and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a slip, and the girl whose name was chosen would be his sweetheart for the duration of the festival. Valentine’s name was gradually associated with such actions. While the reality of St. Valentine is lost in the mists of history, he became one of the most popular saints in Rev. Yme medieval Europe. He beWoensdregt came naturally associated with the customs of “courtly love” which were practiced by the nobility and knights in the middle ages. Courtly love was a practice of expressing love nobly and chivalrously, in which the knight serves his courtly lady. Some think that the customs associated with Valentine’s Day originated in medieval England and France. It was supposed that birds began to pair in the middle of the second month of the year. In Chaucer’s “Parliament of Foules” we read, “For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day / when every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.” So the day became associated with lovers, and a proper time to send love letters and love tokens. The practice grew, and became especially popular about 400 years later, so that by the mid–eighteenth century, it was very

common for friends and lovers to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. Today, the Greeting Card Association estimates that a billion Valentine cards are sent each year — making this day the second largest card–sending holiday of the year. I don’t have any advice as to how to treat your sweetheart today. But I remind you that in its deepest sense, love is much more than an emotion or a feeling. Hollywood loves to emphasize this aspect, because it usually makes for a great movie. The deeper sense, however, is that love is a series of actions, in which we seek the best for the beloved, in which we treat one another with gentleness and compassion. In a contemporary translation of Paul’s famous hymn to love, “Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have. Love doesn’t strut, doesn’t have a swelled head, doesn’t force itself on others, isn’t always ‘me first,’ doesn’t fly off the handle, doesn’t keep score of the sins of others, doesn’t revel when others grovel, takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, puts up with anything, trusts God always, always looks for the best, never looks back, but keeps going to the end.” In that sense, truly, “love never dies.” Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

features Happy Valentine’s Day
A little something for the best girl JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now
Jim Cameron Ah, Valentine’s Day, that special day when true love comes to the fore. When, if a gentleman properly understands the concept, a special gift, a token of admiration and affection is in order. Perhaps a box of the best chocolate, perhaps a dozen red roses, perhaps, should the degree of intimacy be such, some lingerie. Not necessarily a problem for the discerning beau nowadays, somewhat trickier in the days of yore. Not the chocolate or roses, of course; neither has changed appreciably over the last century. Lingerie, on the other hand ... well, for a gentleman to enter a dry goods store in the year 1900, and address the clerk behind the counter thusly: “I say, my good man, I am desirous of purchasing a gift for my best girl. Do you, by any chance, carry the Fairy Bust Form Corset — a new radical departure in shape and construction from any Bust Pull heretofore made, combining features of daintiness and the best ideas of a shapely and hygienic form permitting absolute freedom of movement? Or might you have on hand the Ferris Book of Living Models in order that I may choose the appropriate Ferris Bicycle Corset Waist constructed with elastic sides which yield to every motion of the wearer? The hips are short and pliable; the bust is made to give support without restriction. She will ride with easy grace because every motion, every muscle is absolutely free. She will ride without fatigue because she enjoys a perfect respiration. And where, might I ask, are the Valentine cards?” Highly unlikely. Women’s undergarments were rarely a subject of discussion in the early 20th century, perhaps wisely so, in terms of keeping things brief, as a woman of that era did not simply pop into a bra and thong, throw on a dress and shoes and hit the road. In 1900, the well-tailored lady wore a significant variety of garments at a time, divided into four categories: 1) Undergarments — most commonly an “all-in-one” combination of chemise (undershirt/slip), “drawers” (underpants with legs, often split) and “stockings” (made of wool, cotton, or silk) which

One of the first illustrated ads for women’s undergarments in a Cranbrook newspaper – Herald December, 1923.
At times the quality of the illustration undoubtedly surpassed the comfort of the product. – Herald 1921 came up above the knee and were held in place with ribbon or elastic garters. 2) Foundation Garments — shoes (of course), generally of the thick heeled and pointed toe variety, and the ubiquitous corset. The corset gave “support” by forcing a woman’s torso into the fashionable shape of the day. The bust was pushed up and the chest and backside pushed out by means of “boning” made of strips of whalebone or metal. It was important that the metal be of a good quality as it was considered poor form to rust in social settings. The corset hooked up at the front and laced up tightly and generally painfully at the back.
(As an aside, women generally wore their hair high upon their heads. The popular style was often puffed out with the aid of “rats” made from hair saved from her hair brush and rolled between her hands to create small rat-like shapes.) Next was added the “corset-cover,” made of lightweight cotton, in order to hide the corset. “Petticoats” (similar to slips and generally starched to avoid limpness) were added in desired layers to add to the fullness of the skirt. 3) Daily Garments — A floor-length, or sometimes ankle-length skirt of endless design and decoration, hopefully wide enough at the bottom to permit ease of walking or riding a bicycle. The upper torso was covered with a stand-up collared linen blouse known as a “shirtwaist”, not unlike men’s shirts of the period, and often stitched with embroidery. Accessories included a belt, pins, broaches, earrings and a locket. 4) Outer Garments — The hat (large or small, depending on the fashion), a parasol to avoid an unfashionable tan, handkerchief, purse and gloves. And there you have it, a minimum of 22 articles later (not counting the rats or broach) until the magical words, “I’m ready, honey.” Of course, it is entirely unlikely that the average male of the day was aware of all this. Separate dressing-chambers were common, whereas easily decipherable descriptions of women’s undergarments were not. It seems it wasn’t until the spring of 1904 that the first ad
dealing which such things appeared in a Cranbrook newspaper. It stated “Ladies Muslin Underwear – the materials are the best used in underwear manufacture. The styles are beautiful, the variety unlimited and sizes complete.” It was accompanied by an illustration of an attractive and shapely lady in long johns. It may have created a bit of a stir among the womenfolk as the following week the store replaced the ad with that of “little men’s clothing for spring”. In fact, it was almost two years before another illustrated ladies underwear ad once more appeared and, true to form, it was a “Knit-To-Fit Combination Suit” — a onepiece from neck to ankle — in short, long underwear. Sparse times for males seeking titillation in advertising and certainly no help in shopping for that perfect lingerie gift. The first local illustrated ad of an actual corset appeared in 1911, in truth, not so very long before the corset would begin to fall from fashion, brought about in no small part by the women’s emancipation movement headed by such as Amelia Bloomer who herself popularized “bloomers,” baggy pant-like apparel which became fashionable for decades. By the end of the First World War the prevailing concept of ladies’ undergarments was under much attack, with the corset as the ultimate target and women everywhere letting out collective sighs. By the 1920s it was all little more than an old-school novelty. Is there a lesson in all this? Indeed, it reads: chocolates, roses and a nice restaurant. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

SPORTS BRIEFS Olympic gold medallist Jon Montgomery ‘99 per cent’ sure he’s retiring
CALGARY - Canadian skeleton racer Jon Montgomery says he’s “99 per cent” certain he is retiring. The 2010 Olympic gold medallist made the comments in a telephone interview with The Canadian Press on Thursday. The 34-year-old from Russell, Man., was one of the stars of the Vancouver Games four years ago, memorably chugging from a pitcher of beer in Whistler, B.C., following his victory. But Montgomery failed to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi after struggling to find consistency on a new sled. Montgomery said he wants to leave the sport with his health intact and is proud of what he’s accomplished for both himself and Canada. “I’m done. As a competitive athlete, this is the end of the road for me,” he said, before later adding: “I would say 99 per cent of me is certain that I am done. You won’t see me next year or the year after and I’m 99 per cent sure you won’t see me trying to gain a spot for (the 2018 Winter Olympics in) Pyeongchang.” Canadian Press

Kimberley tech sends gear to Sochi CONTINUED from page 1 “My friends, who are the existing servicemen, just did not have enough time to prepare the skis for Sochi,” said Reid, “so they left those skis with me for a month, so I can get them up and going, get them fast for them while they were busy competing on the World Cup, just because the time constraints on the World Cup are such that you don’t have enough time to just prep skis for a month down the road.” Shipped straight from the Stockli factory out of Europe, Reid got his hands on them in December and started to work his magic, sinking half a kilo of wax into each pair before sending them off. “They came tuned, so they had their initial prep,” said Reid. “…Pretty much it was every morning, I would come into the shop, scrap and then really, really brush the skis. Most people don’t understand how important the brushing of a ski is. Spent a lot of time brushing the ski and then rewax the ski and I just did that pattern over and over and over. “When you do that on a pair of skis, especially on these ones which were specifically designed for extremely warm temperatures on snow, you slowly start to see the base of the ski morph and change and it almost turns from a dull blackgrey and it starts to shine and shimmer. “Once you get that real shimmer, that’s when you know you’re starting to go fast, and when you get to that point, you know you have to get out on snow and start running them.” Not all skis are made equal, and these ones are especially unique, said Reid. “Each athlete will have 10-20 pairs of skis to choose from. The actual tune is very similar but the base is very different, so

Vancouver Games gold medallist Ashleigh McIvor had a little bit of help from a Kimberley technician four years ago. Scott Reid also has his stamp on the Sochi Games, sending some skis he worked on in January to the Canadian Ski Cross team. you’ll have a hard base or a soft base, then you’ll have different structures or grinds that are actually put into the base,” said Reid. “Some structures are good for cold, some structures are good for wet, some structures are good for dry, some bases are good for this, some for that. “The skis I worked on were very a unique ski that is designed pretty much for plus-6 C degrees snow, which is the prediction. That’s why they had these skis specifically designed for the team.” Reid got into the national level as a coach and ski tech in 2006, once a few of his athletes graduated to the top stage from the provincial level. Once there, he became a self-described jack of all trades. “I find it actually gives you a really big skill base in the ski room, working on the skis, with my knowledge as a coach. “There is a lot of influence in coaching that a really good serviceman can do in the ski room. You can actually change an athlete’s skiing by working on their skis a certain way and doing
certain things to their skis.” He cited an example of simply raising the toe in the binding a few millimetres on a ski, which helped his athlete shave valuable time off her race. He was a part of the technician crew for the ski cross team in the Vancouver Games in 2010, helping Whistler’s own Ashleigh McIvor win a gold medal as the sport made it’s Olympic debut. “She just destroyed that run, and just was hands-down the winner and as soon as she crossed—we were all at the start—but then the roar of the crowd just rolls up the hill,” said Reid. “She finishes and then three seconds later, this wave of sound that came up the hill was incredible. “It was something else.” While McIvor’s gold speaks for her ability to race, there is another story behind the story of her run, according to Reid. By the second and third heats, there was heavy snow up at the top of the run that turned to rain about a third of the way down, said Reid.
The athletes were decelerating on parts of the run, and their coach got on the phone and tore a strip off Reid and his partner. “Do something. Do something now,” Reid recalled the head coach saying. Reid had race-waxed his own skis—the same as his athletes—and decided to try a particular product with a powder version on one ski and a liquid version on the other. He buried his skis to get them cold, and pulled them out after a while to test how they ran in the snow. “This overlay, we had never used in a race setting, we had only tested it. It was a very, very bold move to do,” said Reid. “...I turned to my partner and said, ‘We got to put the liquid on now.’” Reid put on the liquid overlay, and the rest is history. “She [McIvor] left the field behind,” he said. “It was seconds ahead. She was through the finish while the rest of the girls were on the last jump. That shows you just what can happen. “Not many people really know that story. You don’t see that on the TV coverage.” Reid stepped back from the frenetic schedule of working with the national team after the Vancouver Games and eventually set up Scooters Service Shack in Kimberley. While he worked specifically with the ski cross sport, he’s also has coaching and tech experience with the other alpine events, such as downhill, slalom and super G. He’s also gotten involved with local club race groups, such as the Kimberley Alpine Team and the Fernie Alpine Ski Team. He has also done some work with local ski-cross athlete India Sherret, who is starting to make a name for herself at the national level of the sport.

HAMILTON, Ont. - Craig Butler swears he won’t be showing off his Grey Cup ring in the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ dressing room. But the Canadian defensive back, who signed a three-year contract with Hamilton after spending his first three CFL seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, promises he’ll bring his winning attitude to a team he feels is already on a roll. “I want to bring some leadership to the team,” said the 25-yearold native of London, Ont., and former Western Ontario Mustangs
star. It’s probably best to keep the ring under wraps. It would only rub salt in a wound after Hamilton lost the championship game 45-23 to the Roughriders. Butler was a big part of their success. He led the Grey Cup champions last season with 60 tackles and also had four interceptions and is happy to list his strengths. “Experience. Versatility. Passion. I love this game,” he said. “It’s my job but I love it more than anything. “I’m going to bring that to practice every single day and a winning
attitude.” Butler was among the three free-agent signings Hamilton unveiled Thursday. The others included: defensive back Brandon Stewart from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and offensive lineman Steve Myddelton from the B.C. Lions. Hamilton has also signed import receiver Cary Koch from the Edmonton Eskimos and former Roughriders linebacker Abraham. The club re-signed Canadian linebacker Marc Beswick, the East Division’s top special-teams player last year, just before he was set to hit the open market Tuesday.

Sports Avs wrap up Pacwest season in the Lower Mainland
Tre vor Cr awley Sports Editor
The Avalanche wrapped up their season last weekend as the men and women faced the Capilano University Blues and the Douglas College Royals in their final matches of the Pacwest schedule. The men secured a berth in the playoffs after two tight matches with the Blues, but ran into a tough Royals squad that beat them twice. On Thursday, the Avs took it all the way to five sets, battling back in the
fourth to force the tiebreak. The Avs went up 25-23, before surrendering the following sets at 19-25 and 30-28. Facing a must-win set, the Avs got it done at 25-22 to force the fifth tiebreak. However, Capilano pulled out the stops and took the final set at 15-10 to pick up the win. Despite the setback, the men came out with a better result in the ensuing rematch on Friday. Capilano came out strong and won the first two sets at 25-23 and 2515, before the Avs got

No medals, but Canadian men’s hockey team hits the ice C anadian Press
SOCHI, Russia - Canada had its first medal-less day at the Sochi Olympics on Thursday but a win in men’s hockey and big results from curlers Brad Jacobs and Jennifer Jones helped temper the disappointment. Drew Doughty scored an important insurance goal and added an assist as Team Canada defeated Norway 3-1 to open its Olympic title defence. The game was more of a nailbiter than most would’ve expected. Norway held Canada scoreless in the first period and goaltender Lars Haugen kept his team in the game even as Canada started to assert itself. “We got better as the game went on,” Canada forward Martin St. Louis said. “They are a hard team to play against because they don’t take a lot of chances.” Canada also had promising results in curling. hurt the worst of all. “I’m crushed,” Walker said. “Words can’t even describe it. There was no one thing to pinpoint. We all could have found three-hundredths (of a second in each run). It just hurts.” All three fourth-place results were Canadian bests, but ultimately it means four more years before Canada can try again for its first-ever Olympic luge medal. Canada also struggled in short track, failing to reach the final in the men’s relay and the women’s 500 metres. Canada was out of the men’s relay semifinal when Francois Hamelin, from Ste-Julie, Que., tripped on a marker and fell. “I lost us the medal,” a tearful Hamelin said of the incident, which came only days after his brother Charles had the team on a high from winning the individual 1,500-metre race. “I cost Canada a medal. I really feel guilty.” Charles Hamelin
seemed more philosophical about the result. “In short-track, you can have glory one day and have your heart broken the next,” he said. Earlier in the day, Marianne St-Gelais of Saint-Felicien, Que., fell short in her bid for a medal in the women’s 500 metres. She was the silver medallist over that distance at the 2010 Vancouver Games. Jones’ rink was tied 5-5 with Switzerland when she scored three in the ninth with the hammer to take control. But there would be no comeback for the Swiss, who suffered their second defeat of the day. As for Jacobs, he’s optimistic his team is back in form. “We’re getting better,” he said. “I really think we played really well in the last four games. “We’re learning each and every game and we’re bringing a lot more intensity out there which is what we need to do.”

It happened this week in Cranbrook Week of February 9 to 15 Dave Humphrey
Items compiled from the archived newspapers held at the Cranbrook Museum and Archives 1900 Farewell To Our Boys … Last Saturday was a day long to be remembered in Cranbrook. Forty-two sturdy young men of South East Kootenay, who had offered their services for England and the Union Jack, boarded the east bound train here at noon under command of Captain Parker, and left for the battle fields of South Africa. The Pay In Strathcona’s Horse ... For the benefit of those who are curious to know what pay the volunteers for the Strathcona Horse will receive, it may be said that until the corps arrive in South Africa mounted police pay will prevail, which is as follows: Private 50 cents per diem, corporal 85 cents, sergeant $1, sergeant major $1.50. On arriving in Africa the line cavalry scale will be paid, which is: Private one shilling and two pence, corporal two shillings, sergeants two shillings and eight pence, troop sergeant major three shillings and 10 pence, squadron sergeant major four shillings and four pence. A First Class Dentist … Dr. Barber, of Nelson, has been in town this week practicing dentistry. He has done a great deal of work and is giving good satisfaction. He expects to make regular visits to Cranbrook, Fernie and Fort Steele, and establish a regular line of practice. The Glass Of Fashion … Plaid silk linings appear in some of the wool dress skirts. The back in many a cloth bodice made quite plain, without any seam. The new boas and muffs seem to be chiefly made of tails, so many are used. Round handkerchiefs embroidered with your favourite flower is the latest fad. Wide silk gauze scarves to wear about the neck and to throw over the shoulders with evening dress are shown in great variety in the shops. White
tulle, striped with narrow ribbon velvet, is very effective over white satin for an evening gown, and ruffles at the foot are edged with the velvet ribbon. Very shiny are the black gauze butterflies, spotted with chenille and spangles, which can be purchased in the shops for renovating last year’s evening bonnet. The Fort Steele Band … The Fort Steele band gave a concert last Wednesday evening to assist the organization in raising funds for its new hall. The band has greatly improved, and the people of Fort Steele should be proud of it, and do all in their power to assist it in such efforts as promoting the welfare of the town. The members are always ready to assist in any enterprise in the town, pay or no pay, and are deserving of a liberal support. 1901 A Wild Horse Pioneer … An interesting figure on Cranbrook streets for a couple of days last week was Dave Griffith, one of the sturdy pioneers of the district; one of the very few who came into the country in 1864 and has stayed with it to good purpose. Help The Fire Department … The paper that is being circulated
Cranbrook
for funds to pay off the debt of the fire department, is being freely subscribed to. It is necessary to raise something over $100 for this purpose to pay the debt and place the apparatus in a condition to do work. Every householder in the town should give at least $1 for the purpose. The department is a benefit to every property owner in the town. Ice Harvest … The ice harvest is now on and several hundred tons have been shipped from Moyie Lake to this point. Among those who are storing it away are Messrs McInness, Ryan, Clapp, King, Brault, Leitch and Wellman. 1902 We Were Dead Easy … The Fernie boys did as they pleased with us, they walked through our players and when they wanted a goal they just rushed in and took it. There was a hockey game at the rink Saturday night. That is, it was advertised as a game, and the crowd was there expecting to see a game. But they didn’t. The sides were formed, and when Referee Donahue blew the whistle the puck started. It was a strange and peculiar puck. It liked McDermot, the Cranbrook goalkeeper, and kept near him most of the time. So near him, in fact, that “Mac” was

doing the hot step right. There were moments when it came so rapidly and often that he thought he was playing up against a symposium of pucks. Once in a while the erratic little rubber devil would take a turn down the ice by way of diversion, helped along by a good strike by one of the Cranbrook boys. But it was not for long, and back it would go, and then followed a general scrimmage. Twice a man on the Fernie side was knocked out, but that made no difference. They played like professionals and never seemed to tire. Our boys did well, considering. At the close of the first half Cranbrook had gotten but one goal, and when time was called at the end of the game the score stood 9 to 3 in favour of Fernie. The Odd Fellows Ball A Grand Social Success … Nearly 200 people participate in a glorious evening characterized by good humour and a good time. The largest and most enjoyable dance ever held in Cranbrook was that given by the members of Key City Lodge,
I.O.O.F., last Monday evening. A few minutes after 9 o’clock, the music started for the grand march, and the floor was filled with a fine looking crowd of dancers. As one gentleman present remarked, “Never before in the history of Cranbrook has there been seen such a number of magnificently dressed women and fine appearing men”. Dance followed dance, from the good-natured quadrille to the mazy waltz, until the hour of midnight. The music furnished by Messrs. Rookes and Highwarden was excellent, and every feature of the ball was above criticism. It is truly said that the Odd Fellows of Cranbrook have won an enviable reputation as entertainers, and every announcement along that line by them is a prophecy of a grand good time. It Escaped … R.O. Jennings and Gust Thies have been placer mining on Perry Creek the past few months. Their camp is about six miles above Old Town, and they have been living alone in their cabin.
One day last week they heard their dog crying in agony and alarm. Mr. Jennings rushed out to the brush and found the animal in the embrace of an immense mountain lion. Jennings called to Thies to bring the axe, and in the meantime, having nothing else to use, he threw his mitts at the animal. Without letting go of his victim the lion spit like a tomcat at this mode of attack, and finally let the dog go and slunk slowly into the woods. Thies hurried out with a .22 rifle they had in camp to shoot at mountain rats. Not thinking of the ferocity of the lion or the danger he incurred, Thies chased after him and succeeded in hitting him once in the flank. The bullet had no effect except to cause the lion to turn and spit at him. Suddenly it dawned upon Thies that he was chasing a half starved lion alone into the bush with nothing but a plaything of a rifle for protection. Thinking then that discretion was the better part of valour, he relinquished the chase and sought in hurried flight the safety of com-
panionship at the camp. “I hated to lose the fellow,” said Mr. Thies, “as it was the largest one I ever saw. But, I could do nothing with small rifle, and so had to let him go.” Narrow Escape … Richard Stewart, who was hurt by a premature explosion of dynamite last week while digging a grave, is able to be out again. Moyie Lake Ice Harvest … The ice harvest on Moyie Lake has commenced. Messrs Hawke & Brenton and Joseph Niederstadt have formed a partnership. They have contracts for one thousand tons of ice. Some of this of course will be shipped to outside points, a good portion of it going to Cranbrook and Marysville. The same parties still have the 50,000 ton contract from the C.P.R. in view and the chances are favourable for them getting it. Only married men who are residents of the town will be given employment and 30 cents an hour will be the wages paid. They are getting 70 cents a ton for their ice loaded on the cars here.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) You might go overboard when dealing with a child or new friend. Your creativity will flourish as long as you are spontaneous. An associate might interject him- or herself into a situation without realizing it. Make this OK. Tonight: Be the Romeo or Juliet of the moment! TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Your feelings are a lot stronger than you realize. Someone in your immediate circle will encourage you to be more logical. You might feel as if this person is raining on your parade. Don’t worry -- this behavior is only temporary. Tonight: Invite some friends over. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Remain spontaneous despite a co-worker’s or friend’s attitude. You have much more that you want to share, and you will. You suddenly might switch from being in a rage one minute to being even-tempered the next. Extremes mark this day. Tonight: Do the Valentine thing.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You might discover that you have more than one Valentine. Be careful when making plans, as there could be a conflict. Remember, chocolate works; nearly everyone loves it. Your feelings seem to be all over the place. Tonight: The going gets better as it gets later. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’ll want to pursue an important matter. Let a domestic issue sit for now, because you won’t be able to change it. Be optimistic, no matter what happens. You will find a way to turn this situation around. Tonight: Too many people want to be your Valentine. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Listen to the feedback you get, though you might want to confirm what you hear at a later point. You could be moving a lot slower than usual until later today. Postpone any meetings where you have to be alert. Tonight: Recharge your batteries. TGIF! LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Run with the moment, and
Tundra
focus on your long-term goals. You could feel unusually tight when managing your funds. You might want to take a risk, but know that a more conservative course serves you well. Refuse to get angry with a loved one. Tonight: Honor Valentine’s Day. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Are the changes you’re about to make positive? You might want to get feedback from someone who is straightforward. If you have made a plan at a time when you felt less than great, it could reflect a certain amount of negativity. Be realistic. Tonight: Use your imagination. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Understand that your moods tend to go up and down. When push comes to shove, you might want to reach out to a partner. A friend could be overassertive, and you might feel the need to respond with irritation, if not anger. Tonight: Try to make peace, not war. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Reach out to a loved one or dear friend at a distance. You have a way of communicating that lets
the other person know you care. Use the upbeat mood of Valentine’s Day to spread good cheer. A misunderstanding could arise from out of the blue. Tonight: All smiles. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Listen to a loved one’s feedback. Understand that the innate tension that seems to exist between you and others is part of the Full Moon today. Problems will be exaggerated in the present stellar atmosphere. Tonight: Look at the big picture, then celebrate Valentine’s Day. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Tap into your imagination when making plans. You might notice that a friend, family member or loved one could be quite tense. Pressure builds and tempers flare as a result of the Full Moon. Try to stay clear of all the uproar. Tonight: Say “yes” to an offer. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Readers: Happy Valentine’s Day to one and all, along with our special good wishes to the veterans in VA hospitals around the country. And our particular thanks to those readers who have taken the time to send valentines, visit the vets and volunteer at VA facilities. Bless each and every one of you. Dear Annie: Thirty years ago, my husband’s sister-in-law made a pass at him. They worked at the same place, so when he turned her down, she made his life a living hell. He ended up quitting the job, and we left town. She and my brother-in-law are divorced now, but we see her occasionally at family gatherings. This woman has been hospitalized twice for breakdowns. Most of the family is cordial to her, knowing that a lot of what she did in the past was due to her illness. When her meds are working and she is feeling stable, she reaches out to those she has hurt to make amends. She reached out to my husband, tearfully admitting that she knows she is the reason we left, and has asked for forgiveness. She now thinks everything is just fine. The problem is, she has never reached out to me to apologize for the way she upended my life. She doesn’t know my husband told me what happened. Even after all these years, I have a hard time smiling and pretending everything is hunky-dory. I have forgiven her, but forgetting is something else, and every time I see her, the old anger comes back. My husband agrees that nothing would be gained by bringing these things up again. Any suggestions for moving past this in a positive way? -- Wronged but Silent in Wisconsin Dear Wronged: You haven’t actually forgiven her, because her presence still makes you angry. If you believe an apology from her would make a difference, you should calmly let her know. But if you don’t think it matters one way or the other, please consider talking this through with a professional who can help you let go of the past completely. Dear Annie: We have 5-year-old twins. We enrolled them in a swimming class last year. Our son had a bad experience and didn’t want to continue. Our daughter, however, loved it and is doing great. After a couple of months, our son decided to return to classes. (We think he was jealous of his sister’s achievement.) Naturally, he is a level behind her. He now cries and wants to be on her level. We think it would be unfair to hold our daughter back for a while so her brother can catch up. However, if we do hold her back, we can enroll them in semi-private lessons together, saving money as well as transportation time. It also solves the problem of our son’s jealousy. Should we do it? -- Swimmers Parents Dear Parents: As a general rule, it is never a good idea to force kids to accomplish anything at the same speed, moving them forward and back so one isn’t jealous of the other. This is a recipe for a lifetime of craziness and resentment. If you wish to put both children in the same class because you want to save money and time, that is a different issue and certainly justifiable. If the lessons are semi-private, your daughter should be able to move ahead at her own speed, which is not the same as holding her back. Dear Annie: I believe you overlooked something in your response to “Getting This Off My Chest.” The writer stated that he is positive his wife got pregnant intentionally. It takes two! Even if she “assures” him that it is a “safe” time of the month, that’s no guarantee. Other precautions should be taken. It’s a shared responsibility -- Albany, N.Y. Panel says now not the time for Internet voting Canadian Press
VICTORIA — Provincial and municipal governments should not implement Internet voting until a technical committee can study potential online systems and test security concerns, a panel formed by B.C.’s chief electoral officer recommended Wednesday. The recommendations were submitted to the legislature by the Independent Panel on Internet Voting, which stated in its report that the current risks of implementing Internet voting in the province outweigh the benefits. ``The panel recommends to go slow on Internet voting in British Columbia,’’ Keith Archer, the chief electoral officer said in a news release. ``British Columbians must have confidence that their voting system is fair and trustworthy.’’ The panel states that those who administer elections don’t have the technical expertise to evaluate voting systems, so the committee which would study the systems should include experts in Internet voting, cryptography and computer security. The technical committee should be appointed by and report to the chief electoral officer and remain independent from elected officials, political parties and those who sell Internet voting technologies, the panel recommended. If governments decide to imple-
ment Internet voting now, they should limit it to voters with specific accessibility issues, recognizing there’s a ``substantial’’ risk to the accuracy of results, and they should take a province-wide co-ordinated approach to the practice, stated the panel. If Internet voting is used in the future, the panel recommended governments ensure the process is readily available to all, ballots are cast anonymously and only by eligible voters, and voters can verify their ballots have been cast, it adds. The panel said governments must also ensure that only one vote per voter is counted, voting alternatives are available if Internet voting becomes unavailable or is compromised, and the identity of voters can be authenticated. The panel states that while jurisdictions around the world have investigated Internet voting during the past 15 years, the practise has still not been implemented widely and is only used in a few places and only on a limited basis. The chief electoral officer formed the panel Aug. 9, 2012 because the province wanted to assess the opportunities and challenges of Internet voting. Comprised of the chief electoral officer and four additional members, the panel met 13 times between September 2012 and October 2013.

Be God’s Valentine Rev. David Morton
Since the 14th century Valentine’s Day is celebrated with letters between loves and lovers, traditionally along with flowers and confectionary. The development of the modern day greeting card has established this day in countries around the world. To commemorate this day I share with you thoughts paraphrased from the Bible, a valentine if you will, from God to you: (Adapted from “Father’s Love letter by Barry Adams, 1999) I love you with an everlasting love — Jeremiah 31:3. My thoughts toward you are countless as the sand on the seashore — Psalm 139:17-18. And I rejoice over you with singing — Zephaniah 3:17. For you are my treasured possession — Exodus 19:5. I desire to establish you with all My heart and all My soul — Jeremiah 32:41. If you seek Me with all your heart, you will find Me — Deuteronomy 4:29. For it is I who work in you to will and to act according to My good purposes — Philippians 2:13. I am able to do more for you than you could possibly imagine — Ephesians 3:20. When you are broken hearted, or crushed in spirit, I am close to you — Psalm 34:18. As a shepherd carries a lamb, I have carried you close to my heart — Isaiah 40:11. One day I will dwell with you and you with me, I will wipe away every tear from your eyes — Revelation 21:3-4.
And I will take away all the pain you have suffered on this earth — Revelation 21:3-4. I am your Father, and I love you even as I love my son, Jesus — John 17:23. For in Jesus, my love for you is revealed — John 17:26. He is the exact representation of my being, providing purification for the sins of the world — Hebrews 1:3. He came to demonstrate that I am for you, not against you — Romans 8:31. To tell you that I am not counting your sins against you — 2 Corinthians 5:18-19. Jesus died so that you and I could be reconciled — 2 Corinthians 5:18-19. His death was the ultimate expression of my love for you — 1 John 4:10. I gave up everything I loved that I might gain your love — Romans 8:31-32. when you acknowledge the gift of My Son Jesus, you also acknowledge Me — 1 John 2:23. And nothing will ever separate you from My Love — Romans 8:38-39. Repent, come home; I’ll throw the biggest party heaven has ever seen — Luke 15:7. I have always been Father, and will always be Father — Ephesians 3:14-15. My question is —will you my child accept my valentine? — John 1:12-13. I am waiting for you — Luke 15:11-32. Love, Your Heavenly Father David Morton is Associate Pastor, East Kootenay Lutheran Parish
