Council agree to hire headhunter for CAO position By Treena Mielke After a somewhat lengthy discussion, council has opted to go ahead with its original decision to hire a headhunter to help find a suitable candidate for the CAO position. A motion by Mayor Rick Pankiw to hire the recruitment firm of HR Group Management Con-
sultants of Edmonton was carried unanimously at council’s Feb. 11 meeting following an in-camera session. The decision did not come quickly and earlier in the meeting, Coun. Einar Olsen made a motion to rescind a previous motion to hire a headhunter. “I think we are capable of
making the decision ourselves,” he said. Coun. Mathew Jaycox agreed. “A headhunter will come back with multiple names and we still have to make a decision,” he said. However, Coun. Paul Payson said the cost of hiring a headhunter was not unreasonable and should be considered.
Olsen’s motion to not go ahead with the original plan was defeated three to two with Pankiw, Payson and Webb opposed. Council will hire the firm of HR Group Management Consultants of Edmonton at a cost of $12,000 plus GST and expenses for advertising and travel. In the open mike session, Ray
W
Durand, who attended the council meeting, told council they should be able to make a decision about hiring a CAO without the help of a headhunter. “We expect you to make decisions. We voted you in. We made that decision. It (hiring a headhunter) is a waste of taxpayers’ money.”

Rimbey RCMP deal with stolen vehicles, drugs and other serious matters Rimbey RCMP responded to 40 calls for service in this week. Highlights include drugs, theft, stolen vehicles and other serious matters. Breach of court conditions On Friday night, just after the midnight hour, an alert officer patrolling Rimbey observed a suspicious truck and trailer carrying a Rhino side-by-side UTV pull into town and park at a local business. When the officer checked the driver of the vehicle it became apparent that things were not as they should be. The subsequent investigation led to the man being arrested for breaching court conditions he was required by law to abide by and for possessing stolen property. The truck, Rhino and trailer where all stolen and were related to a house break and enter in the Breton area. Police also seized two loaded firearms from the vehicle. The driver, a 32-year-old man, a resident of Stettler, remains in custody awaiting court to deal with 22 criminal charges. Search for youth On Saturday night, police spent most of the night searching for a youth who was reported missing by her family. Later, the young person came home from a party that she had snuck out of the house to attend. Fortunately, the person was safely found but this was an unnecessary incident that could have been avoided. Please talk to your children and ensure they understand the seriousness of misleading the police and how their lack of judgment effects countless other people. Charges laid Several more folks were charged for failing to abide by court-imposed conditions. A 28-year-old man, a resident of Ponoka, was charged for consuming alcohol. Other local chaps were charged with similar offences. Man being pursued RCMP across central Alberta continue to pursue 31-year-old, Aaron Olson, who is wanted for serious offences that he has allegedly committed in Rimbey and Red Deer. Of course, alcohol was a contributing factor. Stolen truck recovered On Wed., Feb. 12, Rimbey RCMP members recovered a stolen white Ford F150 near the Aurora Hall west of Leedale. The truck had been taken from a residence in Red Deer where a break and enter occurred. It is believed that the truck had been in Rimbey around 2:30 that morning. The truck had oil company decals on the doors. Teen finds ways to cope with mental and physical illnesses Coping with an illness, whether it be physical or mental, can be hard and can also break you down over time. I will discuss both of these, and also the ways I cope with both. How I keep a healthy balance by not getting too overTaylor Snell whelmed when times Work Experience of physical and mental health might seem to be at worst. How I am able to pull myself together and keep on top of my health. Everyone, at some point in their lives, experiences health issues. Whether it be something to do with your physical health, like the common cold, or something a bit more serious and harder to cure. Same goes with mental illness. Almost everyone is faced with an issue of some kind. It’s normal to have low points, experiencing some signs of depression, or something even as small as having lack of motivation and stress. The more serious mental illnesses such as bipolar or schizophrenia can cause the same amount of damage as a physical illness. It is nothing to be pushed aside. I, only being seventeen shouldn’t be too terribly worried about physical health. Teens are mainly aware of mental health issues since many illnesses are common in teens, and so much information is given to them about the topic. But almost a year and a half ago, I was diagnosed with a heart condition. It scared me. I was not sure what to expect or the effects that would come from this. I was in and out of hospitals, and saw many different doctors and nurses. You name it. I always wondered why? I kept an active lifestyle, I ate relatively well, so why? Finally the doctors I’ve been seeing for months, managed to get me into the Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. When I arrived there a heart specialist was able to fill me in on what my illness was all about. It brought comfort hearing him say “It’s not serious”. Then he added, “But it can be, so keep good
care, make some changes, and eliminate any stress you might be experiencing.” Something I have also been victim of is stress and minor mental illness. Knowing many people when I was young and also people I know now with mental illness or even just being mentally unstable, rubbed off on me. I got sad sometimes and because of things taking place in my life I felt small. I thought I couldn’t fix anything by myself for awhile. I came up with a list of guidelines when I feel as though my health is low or if I need time to escape from my sometimes crazy life. I use these to cope. I enjoy walking and running It keeps me both fit and clears my head of some negative thoughts. Writing and reading is a big one, so is listening to music. Sometimes it’s just the little things that matter most, and can give you that much needed boost of confidence or motivation.
Finding time for yourself is nice no matter what it is it gives you time to reflect on the situation at hand, and look forward to a better future. Illness isn’t easy to overcome it can drag on showing no remorse for sometime. When you figure out ways to better yourself and give yourself a positive mind set, even if you have an overwhelming reality of being sick, or having an ill loved one is a big game changer. Everyone is capable of putting up a fight against illnesses of all kinds, you just need to try. If the illness shows you no remorse then show it you are not giving up. Keep striving toward a healthy, happy life. It’s amazing the difference a quick walk or a song or two can make. It starts with you. Grab hold of your life. Find your own ways to cope. Take charge and make change happen.

Lady with MS slips through the cracks By Treena Mielke Colleen Weyman wants to go home. Sitting in her wheelchair, Weyman, who has multiple sclerosis, haltingly, quietly and without fanfare, tells the story of how she ended up in longterm care in Rimbey. The story began last December, just before Christmas. Weyman was excited because she and her husband, Wayne were going to Banff to celebrate the holiday in style. Wayne had been in the hospital, seriously ill for several months, and even though he had not fully recovered, he was well enough to go on a little holiday. Continued on page 8 9th Annual

Land negotiations for seniors’ lodge in Rimbey fall through By Amelia Naismith
The land negotiations between Ponoka County, the Town of Rimbey and Johnson Estates for the proposed seniors’ lodge have been terminated without success, as development agreement could not be reached between the town and Johnson Estates. Consequently, the county’s agreements to the project have also been terminated. As part of their agreement with Johnson Estates the county purchased the land for $336,000; they had put nothing else into the project. “The reality is this land was not for sale,” said CAO Charlie Cutforth. “The whole process, the whole timing, I think is extremely unfortunate.” Rimoka had approached Johnson Estates with interest in the land and a hope they could settle into a land agreement; the formal offer was made late last fall. Following initial contact Johnson Estate shelled out $26,000
of its own funds to change a structure and servicing plan that had been engineered years earlier. Now they want those out of pocket costs to be reimbursed by the Town of Rimbey, the county, or both. At council’s Feb. 11 meeting Cutforth recommended council pay the $26,000 upfront and negotiate with the Town of Rimbey for a cost sharing deal. The county had previously put down a 5 per cent deposit, totaling $16,000, and that will go to paying Johnson Estates, leaving a $10,000 balance for the county. “We’re saying, in good conscience, they should not be out of pocket because Rimoka approached them,” said Cutforth. “There needs to be discussions with the town. They are partially responsible through Rimoka for triggering the needs for these costs,” said Cutforth.

At their meeting, council dealt with a two-piece motion regarding the dropped land sale. Firstly they agreed to enter into the release agreement with Johnson Estates, and secondly council approved the motion to instruct administration to further look into the other options and negotiations for other potential Rimbey locations for the lodge — a motion Coun. Mark Matejka opposed. “I don’t think there’s any panic to move on to
Rimbey FCSS fears contract loss By Amelia Naismith
Just like many other FCSS organizations across the province Rimbey FCSS is struggling with the idea they could lose their home care contract to a for-profit organization. During a presentation made to Ponoka County at their Feb. 11 meeting FCSS director Peggy Makofka also mentioned Ponoka FCSS and their situation. “We’re very similar, we’re in a similar situation.” Across Alberta, especially in the cities, FCSS organizations have lost their home care contracts to for-profit and multi-national companies. “We have a concern, maybe even a fear that that could happen in the small rural areas,” said Makofka. She believes, when the contracts are not reawarded to FCSS, service levels drop, especially in rural areas. “We saw lots of these bigger outfits being quite shocked about trying to provide care in the rural areas. I don’t think it’s all they thought it was going to be.” “Home care can happen any time of the day. It’s scheduled care but you don’t get it all between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.,” said Makofka. Recently she spoke a service provider out of Edmonton who now owns one of the contracts. The woman was surprised how far Drayton Valley was from the city and how uneconomical driving out there to provide rural care could be. Along with the multi-nationals Makofka says Rimbey FCSS also feels a treat from Bethany Group. Which is why she’s thrilled with the promise made by the Rimoka board that Bethany won’t be seeking the contract. “That promise was obliviously made with previous members of the board too but we’ll revisit that promise,” said Reeve Paul McLauchlin. Rimbey FCSS started their program in 1982. “In the beginning we started with home support, which is house keeping and helping people stay in NEED A

another land deal we just failed,” said Matejka, who doesn’t think the funding is in place to support another land sale and the negotiations involved. Other options include a piece of land south of Best Western or another section already owned by the Town of Rimbey in the northeast corner of town, which is serviced. “The only detraction on it is the location of it for the residents,” said Cutforth.

their own home with meal prep and laundry. We did personal care, which is through the contract with Alberta Health Services,” said Makofka. “The goal of our agency is to help people stay at home longer,” she added. Because of the contract Rimbey FCSS runs with a small profit each year, allowing more programs and staff to remain on board, as well give funds back to the community. Makofka says if they lose the contract they’ll also lose those funds and other community organizations will have to look elsewhere for their own funding. Although Makofka thinks Rimbey FCSS as it is know can keep pace with larger outfits the organization is going through an accreditation process to maintain a competitive edge and prove it’s the best holder or the contract. “It’s not mandatory requirement until December of 2016.” The process runs at about $10,000. “But we want to keep pace, we want to have a good quality of care and keep the standard up,” said Makofka. She’s been in touch with two Alberta Health Care workers, Ernie Clarke, who handles the contracts, and David O’Brian, a senior vice-president for mental health and health services. “We wanted to share with them kind of what I’m telling you today; we think we’re doing ok. He actually reassured me that we do very well and he said he knows of the Rimbey and Ponoka programs,” said Makofka. “He does feel we’re proving good service and in fact, he doesn’t have the final say, but he’s hopeful we’ll just be offered an extension on the contract,” she added.

local actors, begins with Carl, (played by Don Layton), a local college football coach who is in verbal warfare with communication director, Miss Speare (played by Carol Kreutz). Both actors steal the stage with their convincing characters, and one can almost feel the contempt haughty Miss Speare feels for anyone who has the audacity to put athletics before culture. The story picks up a pace when Carol’s wife Faith (played by Pam Terry) is visited by an old friend Julian Narramore (played by Christian Lohmann). Faith is desperately in need of a maid to impress her rich Aunt Abby (played by Elaine Hawkins), almost forgets about her dilemma in her delight to see her old friend. Unfortunately, her short term memory is cause for all kinds of unplanned catastrophes and things seem to go from bad to worse. Things become even more complicated when Miss Speare discovers a bottle of sherry left on a dining room table. And, to top off all the confusion even more, Aunt Abby arrives unexpectedly early. Spilled wine, a ruined suit, mistaken identity and maids who seem to appear from every corner of the house keep the audience guessing and laughing until the very end. After several months of rehearsals, director Connie Jensen is pleased with the performances and happy it is being well received. “Every show has sold out and there is a waiting list,” she said. “I am very gratified.” Back after a four-year absence, Jensen said she wanted to raise the bar for the acting crew so the finished product could be something they were all proud of. And she wanted to be sure everyone had a really good time throughout rehearsals and performances. She believes both objectives were met. “I am so thrilled. They just pick things up on their own. There is so much talent there.”

Unsuccessful hunt for new caregiver Continued from page 3 She smiles as she recalls the excitement of getting away for the little trip. She had recently acquired a van which had hand controls and allowed her chair to lock into position in the driver’s seat, so she could drive. And even though her caregiver would accompany them on the trip, she relished the freedom. However, the trio never made it to Banff. They ended up being involved in a serious car accident. Although the injuries were minor for the ladies, Wayne, who was in a fragile state at the time, suffered broken ribs and other injuries resulting in complications. A few days later he passed away. About that time, Weyman’s caregiver decided to move on. With no family here to help her, Weyman found herself in longterm care, dependent on the help the nursing staff provided for her daily care. Determined to eventually go home, she began calling agencies, looking for a full time caregiver. So far, she has not been successful. She has also tried Alberta Health Services and the MS Society, but feels like she is being led on a wild goose chase.
Jan Jan22 22- -Feb Feb23 23
“I feel like I am falling through the cracks,” she said, her ever ready smile dimming and her blue eyes filling with tears. Meanwhile, she is worried about what will happen to her if she can’t find a caregiver by March 9. After that time, she says her room in the longterm care facility will no longer be available, as it is to be used for respite patients only. When she employed her previous caregiver, who was with her for two years, she would come to the longterm care facility for a week each month so her caregiver would have time off. Now, without a caregiver, she is not sure where she will be placed in the system if she can’t go home. “I could end up anywhere,” she said. However, Weyman has not given up hope. Her fully wheelchair accessible home is on an acreage close to the lake, only a stone’s throw from the golf course and less than 10 kilometers from Rimbey. “It’s nice out there,” she said. “Lots of trees. And it’s home. I would love to go home.” Anyone interested in helping Weyman can contact her at caweyman@gmail.com

Numbers up for Rimbey’s Women’s Conference By Treena Mielke A women’s conference held in Rimbey Feb. 13 was a great way to give the ladies in attendance a chance to color their world with a little fun and excitement and, in the process, gain some valuable and important knowledge. Close to 350 ladies showed up for the conference which provided a day featuring great speakers, as well as a chance to shop, visit and enjoy a delicious dinner and snacks. The theme of the conference, Color Your World fit in well with keynote speaker George Boelcke, who defines personalities into four general colors: gold, green, blue and orange. Each color has specific personality traits that make them unique. Boelcke, who later sold books in the foyer, proved to be interesting and insightful and many ladies stopped to chat with him and buy his book. Rimbey’s own Myrna Pearman gave an interesting talk on capturing wildlife on camera and brought slides of some of her own amazing photos of wildlife for the audience to view. Her talk was interesting and informative, made even more so by her own breathtaking pictures. During her talk, Pearman admitted she tries to never take the same road twice, leaving herself open to new and interesting photo opportunities. Crawling out of bed before sunrise, waiting patiently and being aware of the beautiful opportunities that exist in your own backyard are ways to ensure beautiful photographs, she said. Gayle Rondeel’s session on bugs and weeds and knowing what is good for you and what is not so good was also popular. Rond-

On a more serious note, Linda Bernicki spoke about the signs of elder abuse. “Abuse can happen to anybody,”

Johnson estates did not terminate land deal, wants answers from town Dear Editor, Reply to “Negotiations between town and Johnson Estates now terminated” Since the above article appeared in the Rimbey Review on February 4 I have been approached by several Rimbey citizens about why Johnson Estates is terminating negotiations with the Town of Rimbey. I want Rimbey ratepayers to know that Johnson Estates did not terminate negotiations. The Town of Rimbey unilaterally and abruptly terminated negotiations with Johnson Estates. Further, my daughter and I attended the January 26 Town council meeting and asked the Town of Rimbey to come back to the bargaining table and the Town of Rimbey refused our request Johnson Estates was approached by the Rimoka Housing Foundation in the summer of 2011. We walked the lands west of the Community Centre with the Rimoka Housing Foundation representative and showed him our Area Concept Plan for development of the lands. We were ultimately advised that Rimoka Housing Foundation was interested in a bare parcel of land that would be purchased by the Ponoka County and serviced by the Town of Rimbey. The Rimoka Housing Foundation would apply to the Alberta Government for funds for a senior housing complex and would be responsible construction of the building. Johnson Estates offered, in a letter dated August 28, 2011, to look into the costs of servicing the lot and provide a serviced lot price but this offer was very clearly declined as the town was going to be servicing the lot. The location of the lot was chosen by the Rimoka Housing Foundation representative. Based on the representations made to Johnson Estates by Rimoka Housing Foundation, the Ponoka County, and the Town of Rimbey, Johnson Estates proceeded to have engineers design an eight to 10-acre parcel in the location requested. In
designing the lot, the storm water management and utility concepts had to be redesigned to work with the new lot. Further Johnson Estates had to substantially revise the area concept plan. All of this cost Johnson Estates approximately $26,000.00 in engineering fees plus took months of labour to complete. A land sale agreement was signed with the Ponoka County in October, 2013. During that same time period Johnson Estates was working on a development agreement with the Town of Rimbey regarding the servicing of the lot. It became apparent when the servicing requirements were being put into writing by lawyers that the Town of Rimbey did not have a clear understanding of how they were going to service the lot. The Town of Rimbey only put their minds to a sanitary line and water line. There was no plan regarding which direction the lot would be serviced from or regarding who was building. paving or curbing the road, or putting in shallow utilities. I am unsure as to why any of these servicing requirements came as a surprise to the Town of Rimbey as the land location and pipes have not changed since the commencement of this project in 2011. However, despite the lack of planning and communication by the Town of Rimbey regarding servicing, Johnson Estates, Ponoka Country, and Rimoka Housing Foundation continued negotiations regarding servicing and all parties, with the exception of the Town of Rimbey, agreed to make additional contributions to the servicing that were not part of the original arrangement. Johnson Estates, the Ponoka County, and Rimoka Housing Foundation agreed to contribute approximately $640,000 towards this project and the town’s infrastructure. Despite significant contributions, on January 13 the Town of Rimbey made a motion that they were terminating negotiations with Johnson Estates. Johnson Estates received

notice of this motion in a letter that basically advised that negotiations with Johnson Estates are terminated due to “unresolved issues” were we were advised in a letter dated January 21 written by Tony Goode that “you are well aware of the unresolved issues”. Further, when Johnson Estates requested to know what conditions the Town of Rimbey would unilaterally impose if an application for subdivision was made in attempt to complete the land deal Tony Goode advised that “the only way to be certain as to the conditions that would be imposed would be to seek formal subdivision approval.” As the Town has refused to provide a list of conditions on an informal basis and given our lack of trust in the current council and its administration we cannot put forward a subdivision application. For all we know, the Town of Rimbey will require us to fully service a lot that we sold at bare parcel land prices. Further, since the new mayor Rick Pankiw and council were elected, there seems, in my opinion, to be a deliberate attempt to derail the purchase of land from Johnson Estates. We were informed by Ponoka County CAO, Charlie Cutforth, at a Nov. 29 meeting the Town of Rimbey was offered other lands, south of Hwy. 53, within two weeks of Ponoka County and Johnson Estates signing the land sale agreement in October. These lands were looked at back in 2011 and at that time the owners wanted $800,000 so the lands were not considered. What motivated these landowners to come forward with a new proposal at a lower price? There was never any indication in the newspaper that negotiations with Johnson Estates were doing anything but moving forward.
And if the Town of Rimbey was negotiating in good faith with Johnson Estates why did they accept any information for another parcel of land? Further, once they chose to receive the proposal should they not have disclosed this information to Johnson Estates? The town had at least four opportunities in face-to-face meetings with Johnson Estates to be open about receiving the proposal. Instead we were advised of the proposal by Ponoka County. In fact, the Town of Rimbey wrote an email to Johnson Estates in Nov. 2013 advising that if we did not have an agreement by Nov. 29, the town would be advising the Ponoka County to look at other land options. My daughter, Stacey Johnson, went to the town office to advise the town that she thought the threat to look t other land options was inappropriate as we were not stalling negotiations. Even during that discussion the town did not advise that they had already looked at another land options and had a proposal in their possession. Therefore, in my opinion, the town did not just omit to tell Johnson Estates about the other proposal, they were dishonest about it. In summary, I believe the conduct of council in this matter is inappropriate. I thin k that council is giving up an idea location for such a project and I do not think anyone is looking at the big picture for development of infrastructure in Rimbey. This is a multi-million dollar building that will be in Rimbey for years to come. Should short term savings, if there are any, cause location and longterm benefits, such as completion of the town water system, to be ignored? Alvin Johnson

Introduction to watercolour by Sandra Bingeman was also included in the afternoon sessions. Bob Layton, a member of the international Ventriloquist’s Association, provided a delightful close to the afternoon. The day concluded with Ponoka FCSS director and the event’s master of ceremonies, Shannon Boyce-Campbell. Brenda Verheire, chairman of the organizing committee said she was pleased with the event. “”Our numbers are up and I am just thrilled with that. It seems to be going very well.” Veheire said the session of elder abuse was the one serious session held throughout the day, and provided thought provoking educational information. “Other than that, we had sessions with quite a lot of laughter and I think that is good. It’s been a tough winter.”

By June Norvila Ray Williams learned a lot about campaigning and the election process after having participated in his first candidate forum and being runner-up in last October’s Bentley civic election. Williams had said if he felt the need he would run for town council again, but didn’t expect to be running again so soon. “I will try to speak to as many residents as possible in the next short while by going door-to-door. I will also be at the forum on February 18 where residents will be able to put their questions forward to me and the other candidates,” says Williams. “I could bring a new perspective to town council and I am willing to represent businesses and individuals alike.” His priorities haven’t changed. “I put my name out there because somebody has to do something,” Williams said. “If elected I will push for growth and change.” Ray Williams and his family are 15-year residents of Bentley. Williams owns and operates an auto repair business in Bentley and was a volunteer firefighter for approximately seven years. Twelve years ago he built his business in a commercial area that didn’t have town water service. He was lead to believe that service would come soon, but he is still waiting.
Ray Williams He was also led to believe that the town could double in size and that hasn’t happened, but he remains convinced there is still opportunity for growth. Williams speaks honestly about his frustration with how taxpayers’ dollars have been spent, how some things have been addressed in the town over the years, and about some town council decisions that have been made. Ray welcomes anyone to talk to him personally, attend the forum, or call him at 403-748-4521 with their town concerns or questions.

Joe Anglin, Wildrose MLA for Rimbey-Rocky Mountain HouseSundre issued the following statement in response to Alison Redford’s comments supporting the feral horse cull in central Alberta: “Wildrose remains committed to a solution that is based on science. Premier Redford has failed to conduct a pragmatic, fact-based analysis of the horses’ herd, range and patterns, which has ultimately put them at risk of being culled. “Wildrose would conduct a best management practices study

to minimize adverse impacts on the environment, wildlife and wildlife resources. “The people in my constituency are calling on this Premier and the Ministry of Environment to consider an alternative to the culling of over 200 horses. They would like to see this government introduce an adoption program where those interested could have the option of domesticating these feral horses. “The feral horse is a proud symbol of Alberta’s frontier heritage. We should strive to keep it that way.”

Children from Place of Rescue entertain at Nazarene Church By Treena Mielke Despite freezing temperatures and icy roads, a good crowd attended the lively and entertaining concert put on by children living in Place of Rescue AIDS Centre and Orphanage in Cambodia. The concert, held at the Rimbey Church of the Nazarene on Jan. 31, featured children aged eight to 10 who performed a concert which included traditional Cambodian dances. They also entertained to music by Alberta singer Paul Brandt. “It was really interesting,” said Dirma Roseboom, one of the organizers of the event. Roseboom and her husband Michael billeted some of the young entertainers and their chaperones at their dairy farm near Rimbey. “They got to see the farm and bottle feed calves,” she said. Roseboom, a mother of five, said it was heartwarming to see the children enjoy themselves and display a natural curiosity about what was going on around them. “It’s amazing that they still trust adults,” she said. “They were inter-
ested in everything and happy to give you a hug.” Place of Rescue was founded in 2003 by retired Canadian missionary Marie Ens. It began as 15 houses for families affected by AIDS. A decade later, the complex has three campuses, is home to 426 children, 23 destitute grandmothers and 27 families affected by AIDS. They also have three university dorms housing 40 young adults. The children coming to Canada from Place of Rescue include two from the AIDS Centre where they live with their HIV positive mothers, one who has been abandoned and seven who are orphans. Even though their backgrounds are tragic, all the children from Place of Rescue have seen their lives change dramatically for the better. Place of Rescue has been invited to perform their program of traditional dances at Missions Fest 2014 in Vancouver and Winnipeg. They will be touring and sharing their stories. For more information and a complete tour schedule visit www.res-

Bentley byelection contender active community volunteer Submitted My late husband, Cliff Knutson and I moved to the Bentley district in 1976 and into the town of Bentley in 1997. Our five children all graduated from Bentley School. We owned and operated Bentley Video Rentals and for the last seven years I have managed Bentley Storage. My volunteer activities include Bentley Museum Society, Bentley and District Historical So-
ciety, Bentley Community Van Society, Bentley Senior Citizen’s Housing Society (Westview) and Bentley Subdivision and Development Appeal Board. I want to ensure you that, contrary to what you may have been told or heard, my health is excellent and I am dedicated to this endeavor. I am raising my 12-yearold great-granddaughter and as a result have lots of energy. If elected, I will strive for a strong, effective council that focuses on serving all citizens of Bentley and helping to make decisions that will benefit the whole
town. Healthy debates are part of the democratic process. I will bring common sense and practicality to all discussions and work with council in a cooperative, collaborative manner. A member of council can only be successful and effect change by developing a good working relationship with the other members of council and administration. I have time to be a councillor and want to make meaningful and effective contributions to Bentley. I will become informed and discuss issues with the pub-
lic for input when necessary. I will focus on the town’s infrastructure, and support new industrial and residential development to help pay the costs. I will strive to maintain a healthy, safe environment with good air quality, safe drinking water and by diverting heavy traffic. I could be your new face on council. If elected please do not hesitate to contact me with your ideas, comments or concerns by calling 403-748-2455 or email me at knutson9@telus.net.

STEVENSON It is with great sadness that we announce that Delbert Dallas Stevenson of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Mazankowski Heart Institute, Edmonton on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the age of 74 years. Delbert was born on December 21, 1939, the youngest of four children born to Marie and Wallace Stevenson. He grew up in the Lockhart area, where he spent most of his time trapping and helping on the farm. Delbert was united in marriage to Joyce Johnston of Rimbey on October 26, 1962, and together they raised two children, Donna and Dallas. Delbert spent many years hunting, fishing and camping, and he took many trophies home from the Fish and Game Association. He also loved to play baseball, he coached many hockey games, and he never missed watching “his” Oilers games and curling. Delbert learned to make ice at the curling rink and spent many hours there, where he enjoyed curling and being with his friends. “Delbert will be sadly missed and forever cherished in the hearts of his family and friends.” Delbert will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Joyce; his daughter, Donna Wells (Gary Stumpf) of Rimbey; his son, Dallas Stevenson (Kathy Weber) of Thorsby; his daughter-in-law, Wendy Stevenson of Rimbey; as well as his four-legged best friend, Cocoa. He also leaves behind his grandchildren; Chris (Val) Culp, Rosanna (Cody) Watson, Brittany Wells (Quincy Cesna), Haley Stevenson, and Raelyn Stevenson; his great grandchildren; Kade, Kyra, Kian, Peyton, and Savannah; two brothers, Ron (Indra) Hamilton of Ontario; and Bill (Loraine) Stevenson of Bentley; and two brothersin-law, Russ Robson of Rimbey; and Lloyd (Helen) Johnston of Red Deer; in addition to many nieces and nephews. Delbert was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Joyce Robson; and two nephews, Wane Robson and Randy Stevenson.
Mr. Donald Andrew McFadyen passed away in the Rimbey Hospital & Care Centre on Tuesday February 11, 2014 at the age of 80 years. Don will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his friend Annie Krossa, his children Gordon, Donna (Rob), Barb (Ron), Brian (Doris), Sheri (Rod), brother Bruce, half siblings Bronwyn, Steven, Michael, Janet, Marjorie, and Terrance, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Don is predeceased by his wife Shirley, brother Jack, mother Jenny Brown, step mother Mae Lewis, and half siblings Dale, Robert and Jeannie. Don dedicated his life to serving his family and community. We celebrate Don’s involvement in the Handivan and Historical Societies, Health Boards, Town Council, Ambulance and Fire Departments, and Masons. Over the years he served as Marriage Commissioner, Notary, Justice of the Peace, funeral officiant, hockey referee, and boy scout leader. His biggest passion was dancing: teaching, judging, entertaining at care homes, and dancing till the band quit playing! In honour of Don, Memorial services will be held from the Rimbey Community Centre on Monday, February 17 at 1 PM. With Reverend Deborah Laing Officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rimbey Handivan Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
