Rallying for justice, love By Jackie Lieuwen Houston Today

Jackie Lieuwen/Houston Today
Nearly 50 people walked across Houston to remember and honour the many missing and murdered aboriginal women. Among them was Beverley Jacobs, an advocate for aboriginal women’s rights who is widely known for her speech in Parliament in summer 2008 after the Residential School Apology. See page 15 for more.

Nearly 50 people took to the streets to walk in honour of the missing and murdered aboriginal women. The rally featured guest speaker Beverley Jacobs, a Mohawk lawyer from the Six Nations reserve in Ontario who is widely known for her speech to Parliament in summer 2008 after the Residential School Apology. Jacobs is also a former President of the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) and was the lead researcher for Amnesty International’s 2004 Stolen Sisters Report. Speaking to the Houston demonstrators gathered outside of the Houston Chamber of Commerce last Friday, Jacobs spoke of her speech to Parliament in 2008.

“It’s the communities that are going to make the change.” - Beverley Jacobs
“One of my responses was ‘what are you going to do about it? You can apologize and an abuser can apologize over and over and over again. But if they’re still kicking you, then it’s not a real apology. It’s when we see that actions are following their words,” she said. But Jacobs doesn’t believe the government will bring change. Phenomenal turn out for Houston WinterFest events By Jackie Lieuwen Houston Today
A smashing success, Family Day WinterFest had 1,500 people participating in the events. “We had a phenomenal turn out for Houston,” said Dawn Potvin, Co-chair of the Houston ACT
(Action Changes Things) Committee, who oversaw and organized the event. “The community support was definitely there…They just far surpassed any of my expectations. “The participant level for every event was outstanding. “[It was great] to

Te m p e r a t u r e s stayed close to -25 degrees Celsius during the whole week of WinterFest, and
that was the only major challenge of the event, Potvin said. Weather caused some venues to change and cancelled the snowmobile rides planned for Saturday afternoon. “The weather was the only stressful thing and there’s

nothing you can do about that, so we just had to stop worrying about it and just roll ahead. “The cold weather was the only challenge because everybody else just organized the events so well. “Once things started going, every-
thing just went off perfectly. “Each organization participated fully and they were just phenomenal, they took care of it and each event went off without a hitch,” Potvin said. See ACT on Page 8

“As a proud
British Columbian, protecting our coast is one of our greatest priorities.”
This endorsement came with 209 conditions that we must meet before we start operations. These conditions reflect the input of thousands of British Columbians and Canadians, and include many of the commitments we made in our submission. We are working towards meeting these conditions in the same way we’ve been working hard to meet the tough conditions put forward by the Province. Many of these conditions centre around the preservation and protection of the diverse marine life that populate the coast of B.C. In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the details behind a number of these conditions with you – like detailed emergency response and mammal protection plans. We’ve consulted with experts from around the world to make sure that we’re doing everything possible to protect B.C.’s coastline. We’re doing all this hard work because we are committed to building a safer, better pipeline. Sincerely,
Janet Holder Leader of Northern Gateway

Morice Mountain Nordic Ski club members Kole Shoesmith, Brandon Goold and Kameron Shoesmith participated in Burns Lake Tech cup race on February 2, 2014. Other kids came from Smithers and Vanderhoof to compete in this event. Kole, Brandon and Kameron all performed very well. Kole came away with first place in the Atoms boys 2 category with a time of 3:04 for 500 meters. Coach Greg Yeomans commented on the talent the kids have. If we start the older kids in November next year it would be interesting to see what the kids could do. The other communities have aggressive training programs that start early in the year. Our programs are just getting going again.

In our opinion:
B.C. Liberals putting themselves first, families last
I
f you were given 200 days to make life better for B.C. families, what would you do first? Maybe you would start by looking at ways to reduce child poverty in this province. Or maybe you would start to address the growing affordability challenges faced by families. Regardless of your first priorities, chances are you would show up to work, roll up your sleeves, and get started. That’s not how the B.C. Liberals see it. This year, Family Day marks 200 days since the B.C. legislature last met. That’s 200 days since the B.C. Liberal government showed up to work to address the challenges faced by B.C.’s families. And in those 200 days, those challenges have only grown. Since the legislature last met, the Liberals have continued to mismanage key files and make life less affordable. Today, we are paying more, and getting less. Unfortunately, the B.C. Liberals would rather play political games than sit down at the table and get to work. The first thing the premier did after the election was sign a document that gave huge raises to their own political staffers. The next thing they did was give plum appointments to failed Liberal candidates. Then, they cancelled the fall sitting of the legislature, proving that they are willing to delay action on serious issues facing B.C. families when they feel it could help them politically. Today, they are busy trying to explain a court ruling that showed they tried to provoke a strike and shut down B.C. schools – all because they thought they could get some political mileage from the chaos it would create for families across the province. Since the May election, the B.C. Liberals have made their priorities clear: their political interest comes first, and B.C. families come last. In those same 200 days since the legislature last got to work, life has become less affordable, while services that families depend on have declined. Medical Services Plan premiums climbed while the Liberal government cut planned spending to health authorities, ignoring our overcrowded hospitals. Ferry fares have been increased, and will jump again in April, while the Liberal government announced cuts to ferry services up and down the coast. And in the fall, just before the legislature should have returned to work, the Liberals announced a hike to hydro rates that will add $300 to the average family’s annual costs – all while allowing the hidden debt at B.C. Hydro to climb. Meanwhile, the Liberal government has failed to manage our province’s economy, and we are seeing the effects. In the last 200 days, the province’s debt has increased by $2.5 billion – rising faster than under any other premier in B.C.’s history – and we are ninth in the country in private sector job growth. In fact B.C. has lost more than 21,000 full time jobs in the last 200 days. In other parts of the country, legislatures have been hard at work. Last year, while B.C.’s legislature sat for just 36 days, every other province’s legislature sat longer – Alberta’s sat for 49 days, Manitoba’s sat for 103 days, Ontario’s 100 days, and Quebec’s sat for 84 days. Even PEI’s legislature sat for four more days than the B.C. legislature, which represents more than 30 times more people. The New Democrats are anxious to get back to work, and when we do we’ll be fighting for a province where people come first, not politics. John Horgan, New Democrat house leader
Pets light up our lives Lola and Charlie are our sweet, happy 30-pound Cockapoos. I realize they are fully grown adult dogs and no longer puppies, but they still act like the hilariously excitable baby beasts we welcomed into our home almost five years ago, so I still refer to them as pups. The brother and sister act have long been housetrained, and they now come when they’re called - unless the bird, cat or dog they’re talking to outside is too intriguing to resist - but in other ways, they haven’t changed at all. When one of us humans wake up for a midnight tinkle, they awaken as well, ready to play. When someone takes the lid off the canine cookie jar, they come sprinting in
like they’ve been starving for weeks. And when we walk through the front door, even if we’ve only been gone for a minute, they wiggle their bums and wag their tails so vigorously you can’t help but feel loved and appreciated. Actually, loved and appreciated is putting it too mildly. Worshipped like a goddess would be a more accurate description of how I feel when they greet me. Wherever I go, Lola and Charlie are right at my feet unless they’re playing with the kids or the husband’s home. If the big guy’s around, they barely notice the rest of us since they’re so head over heels in love with him. Car rides are the real kicker, though. It doesn’t matter where
we’re taking them, they freak out like loud, spastic toddlers hyped up on sugar, about to enter Disneyland. And every week or two, that’s kind of how a car ride ends up when we drop them off at doggy daycare so they can play with their furry friends. I’m not completely clear on what they do all day, but it’s definitely their version of dog utopia. Just pulling up to that place sets them into a complete tizzy as they bounce around the car yelping and whimpering with delight. And as soon as they see the owner of Charly’s Cottage Kennels walking out to greet us, they lose their little puppy dog minds. At the end of the day Charly will tell us who Lola and Charlie
2009
played with as they run circles around my car and jump in for the ride home. “We had a wonderful time,” she’ll tell us. No kidding, I’ll think. They look like they’ve been riding roller coasters all day. If I’ve ever known someone who’s ridiculously well suited for their job, Charly is it. She absolutely adores dogs and they completely idolize her. Every time I leave our pups at her kennel, I know they’re going to come home elated and exhausted. And I love it when they do. Cuddling them is always fulfilling, but in their tuckered out state it’s utter bliss. It seems like they’re reliving the memories of their day through their dreams as they twitch, moan, and even swish
On a brighter note Lori Welbourne their tails in their sleep. But as tired and zonked out as they get, it only takes a second for them to be fully awake and overflowing with joyful puppypower again. If I could bottle their energy and pop it like a vitamin I certainly would. But just being witness to their zest for life brings more zip and zeal to mine, and for that, I am doggone grateful.

B.C. government vows skills training In a speech from the throne that echoed Premier Christy Clark’s election campaign, the B.C. government promised Tuesday to begin a 10-year skills training plan to drive industrial development. Lt. Governor Judith Guichon read the speech in the ceremonial beginning of the B.C. legislature session. It touched on the B.C. Liberal government’s familiar themes, including the need to train and retain citizens to fill one million jobs due to growth and baby
boomer retirements in the next decade. “ B r i t i s h Columbians can look forward to enhancements to the Industry Training Authority, as well as the re-engineering of our secondary and post-secondary institutions to ensure our students have the skills for the jobs of the future,” Guichon told MLAs gathered for the first time in 2014. Employers and job seekers will be watching for details in the provincial budget, to be presented by
Finance Minister Mike de Jong on Feb. 18. Opposition critics have focused on the government’s reductions of skills training and the shortage of spaces and equipment for industrial training. The speech also promises a new 10-year plan for transportation, to build on major road, bridge and transit works that have become contentious in the Lower Mainland as it struggles to keep up with population growth. In education,

education plan for each student and “an agreement to ensure a decade of labour peace in our classrooms.” That goal comes as the government pursues an appeal of the latest court judgment in
size and support staff from their union contract. Speaking to reporters after the speech, Clark emphatically denied the conclusion of a B.C. Supreme Court justice that
her government engineered the 2012 teacher strike to build public support for an imposed settlement. NDP leader Adrian Dix called the speech “particularly lacking in vision or substance,” adding that it contains nothing for B.C. residents who “don’t work in the industries of liquefied natural gas or liquor.” In addition to touting the future benefits of LNG exports and pending liquor law reforms, the speech recounts increases in Asian

B.C. government to appeal teacher ruling By Tom Fletcher Black Press
The B.C. government will appeal a B.C. Supreme Court ruling ordering a return to 2002 classroom rules, Education Minister Peter Fassbender announced Tuesday. Fassbender said the latest ruling could potentially cost the B.C. government more than $1 billion, which he called “completely unaffordable for taxpayers.” But the appeal will focus on
Justice Susan Griffin’s interpretation of constitutional rights in union negotiations. “Governments have to be able to govern,” Fassbender said, adding that no other province has has such restrictions on school organization. “Most importantly, if the real goal is to benefit students, decades of academic research has shown that blankest reductions in class size are of little benefit,” he said. B.C. Teachers’
Federation president Jim Iker estimated that 6,600 teachers would have to be hired to bring B.C. class sizes up to the Canadian average. In Surrey school district alone, there should be 18 teacher librarians, 19 teacher-counsellors, 51 more specialist education teachers and 80 English language teachers, he said. “We want to negotiate a deal at the bargaining table,” Iker said. “We hope that the government comes and bargains with us
in good faith – that’s so important – but we all know that to achieve an agreement, government has to bring the necessary funding to make that deal happen.” The dispute revolves around the government’s unilateral removal of class size and support staff rules from the BCTF contract in 2002. In her first ruling in 2011, Griffin gave the government a year to remove the offending legislation and negotiate class
size and specialist teacher support as a working condition for teachers. Griffin’s second ruling came Jan. 28, ordering $2 million in damages to be paid to the BCTF for what she described as bargaining in bad faith, and striking down parts of the latest legislation. Fassbender said talks over the past year have included class size and specialist support. “We’ve increased supports for students
with special needs, including a 36 per cent increase in the number of full-time education assistants,” he said. “Average class sizes are near historical lows of 19.3 students for kindergarten, 21.5 for grades one to three, 25.7 for grades four to seven, and 23.0 for grades eight to 12. To put that in perspective, in 1970 the average class size was 42.” Fassbender said the ministry’s “learning i m p rove m e n t fund,” established after Griffin’s first
ruling, dedicated $210 million toward the disputed class supports. It funded 500 new teachers, 400 new special education assistants and increased hours for another 7,400 assistants, he said. NDP education critic Rob Fleming said the government shouldn’t be challenging the court ruling. “The onus is on the government to put out an olive branch to the teaching profession,” he said.

Minding Your Money
RRSP facts – basics you need to know to save
Preparing for retirement should start early with a savings strategy that will make it possible for you to accumulate the most wealth for use (and enjoyment!) through all your retirement years. The best retirement savings strategy for most Canadians is a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) because your contributions and all the income that accumulates in your plan are tax deferred until you start using that money in retirement. Add in the fact that your contributions can be used to reduce taxes and the magic of compounding that enhances RRSP growth over time, and it’s easy to see why a registered plan makes such good financial sense. Here are some basic facts that will help you get the most into and out of your RRSP. • Be deadline driven. This year, the contribution deadline for RRSPs is March 3rd, 2014 – don’t miss it! • Be a maximizer. Always make your maximum contribution each year – you’ll get the most in immediate tax savings and in long-term growth. How much you can personally contribute can be found on your most recent notice of assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). • Play catch up. Fill up unused contribution room fast. You can do that in a single year or over a number of years until you reach age 71 – but quicker is better. • Match savings to income. As you make more money, make larger contributions to your RRSP and you’ll have more income in retirement. • Consider borrowing to save. An RRSP loan can be a good thing to maximize this year’s contribution or catch up on past contributions – but only if you can get one at a low interest rate and pay it back as quickly as possible. Even better: use your RRSP tax savings to help pay off the loan. • Choose a beneficiary. Designate a beneficiary for your RRSP (in Québec, this must be done through a will). Generally, RRSP assets do not form part of your estate and do not attract probate fees. If your beneficiary is your spouse/partner or a disabled child/grandchild, your RRSP can be transferred tax-deferred to your beneficiary’s registered plan. Contributing to your RRSP is an important way to save for retirement – but it’s just one part of a solid retirement plan. Get all the facts (and good advice) from your professional advisor to make sure your retirement dreams blossom into enjoyable reality. Last Thursday, Houston Castle Building Centre demolished the greenhouse that was attached to the side of their store. Manager Amanda Veillette said the structure was damaged in the big windstorm several weeks ago, so they demolished it with plans to rebuild. “We are in the process of getting the necessary permits to rebuild it in time for our 2014 greenhouse season,” she said.
True Love
Did you receive a Valentine’s card this year? Do you remember exchanging cards when you were very young? I do, and it was very special to think someone had such cherished thoughts about me! Someone cared! But, soon after the cards were exchanged, everything returned to usual; the distance, the shyness, the prejudices, the walls came up again. The messages exchanged on that day were at best only a glimpse of what could have been, and in some cases, they were just words written on a piece of paper. Can you imagine what it would be like for us to really live out a loving, open, honest and transparent relationship one with another? Wars would cease, racism would be a thing of the past, marriages would thrive, children would all get along in the playground. Parliament would be run in a civil manner, where MP’s would complement each other for the good of the people! Could this actually happen or is it only a dream that fades as fast as the message received on Valentine’s Day? Jesus prayed for all those who believed in him “May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.” John 17:23 NLT The apostle John wrote “Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God….But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.” 1 John 4:7a.12b NLT When we truly commit ourselves to God, his Holy Spirit comes and dwells within us (Romans 8:11). As we submit our lives to God, the Holy Spirit produces his fruit in our lives. The first fruit of the Spirit mentioned by the apostle Paul to the Galatians is love. (Galatians 5:22) So, as we submit to God and surrender our lives to him we will produce love for our spouse, our families, our neighbours, even for our enemies.(Matthew 5:44; Romans 12:20) This love is impossible by strictly human effort, but it is the will of God for all who trust in him. May our desire be to allow God to have his way in our life, so we can truly love those around us in a way that pleases God, more than fleeting words on a Valentine’s card, but in action and in truth. (1 John 3:18) “Three things will last forever – faith, hope and love – and the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13 NLT Submitted by Ken Penner Sponsored by Riverside Gardens

Stepping Stones rally and Family Feast
RALLY from page 1 “It’s the grassroots, it’s the communities that are going to make the change and it’s going to be our families that are going to make the change... “The only way that the violence will stop is when we care,” she said. One important teaching Jacobs said she was taught in her community is called the Great Law of Peace, Gayanashagowa, which is about having unconditional love for everyone. “We’re all human..we’re all connected in that way. We have a responsibility to each other, no matter what race we’re from,” she said. The important thing is to love all nations, all humans, and to teach the younger ones about caring and kindness and love, she said. “I want to honour you,” she told the demonstrators on Friday. “We’re here to acknowledge all of those that we’ve lost, all of those that we’re helping and all of those that we need to embrace in love, even the ones who hurt us. “The ones who are doing the killing, who are stealing our women, we have to pray hard for them. We need to pray hard that they will stop doing what they’re doing,” she said. Jacobs her role is to visit and to remind people of their responsibility to love and care for each other, and that is why she came to Houston. “I’ve made a commitment to community, to my friends, to those people that I want to share teachings with, about the reasons why we need to continue to care about each other... “It’s really important to honour everyone, whether they are here in this lifetime or not. “We have to continue to sing our songs and continue to teach them to our young people, and keep carrying those banners, and keep fighting. “Unfortunately we have to keep fighting, but hopefully someday it won’t be a fight anymore, especially for [the young ones]. “That’s why we do it. That’s why I do it,” she said.

Top right: Rob Charlie, Hereditary Chief of the Small Frog Clan in Burns Lake, enjoys his little grandson Ryder Thunderstorm. Asked why he came to the Houston rally, Charlie said it’s because of concern for the more than 600 women missing. “It’s just not right... It should be ended. Get mobile and get an inquiry going, step up to protection, step up to surveillance on the highways,” he said. Charlie says his goal is to bring awareness. “We’re not a sleeping community. We’re saying to everyone out there that we’re not just turning a blind eye.” He said it seems that nobody hears anything when aboriginal women go missing, yet with over 600 gone, it’s a huge thing. “It impacts every family. [In] just about every village, it’s not uncommon to hear that of a person gone missing. That should end. It’s got to end,” he said. Nearly 50 people marched across Houston last Friday, rallying for justice for the many missing and murdered aboriginal women. The walk and rally was put on by the Houston Stepping Stones Project in partnership with the Houston Friendship Centre Youth TEAM Project.
