Wynndel Box and Lumber rebrands as Wynnwood
Doctors in temporary space at Family Practice
“It’s been a long time coming, but I think I can honestly say today that we have saved the mill,” CEO Michael Combs told employees of the newly branded Wynnwood sawmill on Friday. “All of us here today have saved the mill.” “Starting today, we will be operating as Wynnwood, although the legal name, Wynndel Box and Lumber Co. Ltd. will still remain,” he told about 100 employees who gathered for a pizza lunch and to receive long-sleeved T-shirts bearing the newly designed Wynnwood logo. “Wynndel Box and Lumber Company Ltd. began a century ago making fruit boxes. Then came lumber products,” Combs said. “Today, we are a new company with a new culture. We no longer make boxes and we make more than lumber. … “Wynnwood pays respect to our location for 100 years —Wynndel — and to wood, which is our product. 2013 was a good year for us and 2014 looks like it will be good, too. But 2015 could be very good.”
Nearly three weeks after finding themselves locked out of the Osprey Medical Clinic, three Creston physicians are once again seeing their patients. Drs. Tara Guthrie, Raphael Elemuo and Suzanne Hopkins have moved into temporary offices in the Family Practice Associates Clinic on 16th Avenue North, Guthrie said on Monday morning. “It’s a relief,” she said. Patients needing immediate appointments were being contacted by telephone, she said. Others will be able to call in to a new telephone number, which is expected to be in service on Wednesday. “We are grateful to the doctors at Family Practice for working with us,” Guthrie said. “It’s going to be tight for space” — each will have only one examination room — “and parking, but we will manage.” She added that it is too early to know how long the temporary arrangement will be in place, but that one of the former Osprey staff members has been hired to look after appointments.

t is once again the time of year to organize the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. With a new committee that is always looking for new ideas, meetings are open to anyone. The committee has been trying to focus the June 7 event on family fun, with games, challenges, tugs of war, haircuts for Locks of Love, Zumba and entertainment from local artists, not forgetting the reason for the day — Relay for Life is a fundraiser for cancer and the ongoing fight to kick it (wherever you like). The event honours the survivors, as well as those who lost their battle to cancer. The early bird registration is March 1; the cost is $10 per participant before then, and $20 after. Those who register early will have their names entered in a draw for an iPad. For more information, contact committee member Karen Kriese at 250-428-2088.

MP says budget will be good for Kootenays BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Lorne Eckersley
Wynnwood CEO Michael Combs spoke to staff (above) on Friday, explaining the name change from Wynndel Box and Lumber. Tim Powell (below) holds up a lumber wrap with the sawmill’s simplified logo.
Wynnwood From page 1 In just over two years as CEO of the family-owned company, Combs has overseen a complete overhaul of the mill’s management structure and focused on reducing its line of products to achieve operating efficiencies. “I would love to see us one day returning to two shifts,” he said. A sufficient supply of “white wood” logs from Kootenay forests, will be key. “We sell everything we make because Kootenay lumber is among the best in the world and we have products the building industry wants,” Combs said. “Wynnwood lumber is known around the world for its quality.” He added that the new Wynnwood logo, designed by Boswell’s Warren Clark, will soon appear on company signage, paperwork and lumber wraps.
Canadian cigarette smokers and retired public servants might be taking the biggest hit in the federal budget announced on Feb. 11, but MP David Wilks says Kootenay residents should be pleased. “I’m elated — over the moon — regarding the announcement of an additional $391.5 million over five years to national parks,” the Kootenay-Columbia member of Parliament said from Ottawa yesterday, an hour after Finance Minister Jim Flaherty presented the 2014 budget to Parliament. The money is earmarked for “the Parks Canada agency to make improvements to highways, bridges and dams located in our national parks and along our historic canals, facilitating better access to these national treasures,” according to the budget document. Improvements to the TransCanada Highway within Glacier National Park are specifically identified in the budget. “I look forward to working with the mayors of Golden and Revelstoke and MLA Norm Macdonald on this file,” Wilks said. “The end result should make travel through the park much safer.” The avowedly business friendly Conservative government also promises to take on the “unjustified” price differences between the same products sold in Canada and the United States. “This is an important issue to residents in Creston and area,” he said. The budget promises to introduce legislation to prohibit unjustified cross-border price discrimination to reduce the gap between consumer prices in Canada and the United States. Wilks said it isn’t clear how the legislation will work, but that
it would help address the competitive disadvantage Canadian retailers often find themselves in against their American counterparts. “StatsCan estimates that Canadian prices are about 25 per cent higher than the U.S., and that’s after adjusting for exchange differences,” said Wilks. “That’s unacceptable and we need to do something.” Also of benefit to rural areas like the Kootenays is a new tax credit for search and rescue volunteers who perform at least 200 hours of service a year. Wilks said volunteer firefighting hours would be included in the calculation. Interest-free loans to students working toward Red Seal accreditation in various trades will also benefit Kootenay-Columbia residents, he said, as will the expansion of tax incentives for clean energy generation. “Communities like Meadow Creek and Trout Lake will benefit from the injection of $305 million over five years to enhance broadband service to rural and northern communities,” he said. “This should provide for greater opportunities in Yahk, too.” Smaller amounts, but areas that Wilks described as being “close to my heart” are headed for the Special Olympics program and for a DNA-based missing persons index. Cigarette smokers can look forward to a 24 per cent increase in taxes, which will rise from $17 to $24 per carton of 200 cigarettes. Retired public servants will now be required to pay 50 per cent, up from 25 per cent, of their Public Service Health Care Plan costs. The move is estimated to save $7.5 billion over the next six years. Flaherty announced that the federal government is on track to balance the budget for the first time in about a decade in 2015.

Council says no to Calls for RCMP include zoning amendment car accidents, intoxication BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Residents opposed to the conversion of a duplex to a fourplex at 418 Ninth Avenue South walked away with smiles on Feb. 11 as Creston town council defeated a zoning amendment bylaw proposal. During a public hearing that lasted more than an hour, developer Jake Taylor defended his application, saying that it provided for on-site parking in excess of town requirements and that it met the objectives of the official community plan. Residents opposing the application, which would have allowed the owners to develop the building’s basement and unused space to create four rental units in the existing duplex, argued that the addition of rental units would add to traffic and parking congestion. The public hearing began on Jan. 28, but was recessed at the request of the developer, who said he would meet with neighbours in an attempt to address their concerns. At last week’s meeting, however, municipal services coordinator Ross Beddoes said that the 20 neighbours nearest to the duplex had signed letters or petitions in opposition to the request for a zoning variance. Only one owner of a property within the immediate area spoke in favour of the application. Following the public hearing, Coun. Judy Gadicke said that she was generally in favour of the rezoning and development variance
requests, but that the neighbours’ opposition had to be considered. “I am very concerned about the neighbour’s opposition,” Coun. Scott Veitch agreed. “It’s pretty significant.” Coun. Tanya Wall said that parking problems could actually increase if the application was denied. “The developer could add two more bedrooms to each existing unit and rent to younger people with larger families,” she said. “And those residents could have more cars than the seniors who are now renting. I want to say ‘yes’ to the application but on the condition that additional on-site parking be added.” Wall was the only supporter of the application when the question on the motion was called. All other councillors, including Wesly Graham, who participated in the meeting via speakerphone from Cranbrook, were opposed.

Rendek and Luke heading to Winter Games BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Creston teens Kaeden Rendek and Chloe Luke will compete, respectively, in judo and hockey at the provincial level this week at the 2014 BC Winter Games. They will join nearly 1,400 athletes aged nine-17 in 18 sports at the Games, which run Thursday through Sunday in Mission, and other Lower Mainland venues. For Rendek, what started out as something to do in the winter — when he wasn’t swimming or playing soccer — has turned into something far bigger. Last summer, the 13-year-old won a silver medal at the Canadian Judo Championships — after wining bronze in 2012 — and next week he will take on other provincial competitors at the 2014 BC Winter Games, which run Feb. 20-23 in Mission. “It feels good to represent the Kootenays and Zone 1,” said the Creston teen. “I’m the only one from the Kootenays in my weight division.” Rendek is now in the under46-kilogram division, and has been taking on fighters up to three years older. To that end, Rendek been training with chiropractor Wade Giles, with the goal of making sure he’s exercising correctly at the gym and maintaining good form on the mat, and he can’t express enough appreciation to the other Creston judokas who spend extra time at the dojo helping him practice. “I just want to thank all the people who come to the club to help me train,” he said. For 14-year-old Chloe Luke, playing hockey is nothing new — she joined her first team 11 years ago, having developed an immediate passion for the sport. “I grew up in a very competitive family,” she said. “I play today for all the same reasons — the fast pace, mental strategy, getting goals, shutting down the other team’s strategies. “And there’s nothing better than the smell of hockey in the morning.”

Luke should know — she’s been practicing early Thursday mornings at the John Bucyk Arena with her father and minor hockey coach, Chris Luke, leading up to joining the Kootenay zone team at the BC Winter Games, which start today in Mission. She’ll play five games by the end of Saturday, putting all of her training — working out at the gym, running, swimming competitively and more — to good use. Her fitness was already tested at a three-day qualifier held in Nakusp last month, which allowed her to show evaluators her strengths. “I’m fast, I know how to move the puck well, I’m strong, I’m a playmaker and have a really good shot,” said Luke , who has previously competed at the provincial level in the BC Cup championship. She hopes those strong points will help her to eventually join a college team and represent Canada or the U.S. at a national level — but for now, she’s excited to demonstrate her skills at the Winter Games. “I look forward to the competition and those girls that say, ‘Oh no. I have to battle against that girl again,’ ” she said.

There was a storm of controversy last week after an anti-CBC talking head spouted off on a supposed news program, criticizing CBC Olympic commentators and newscasters for trying to correctly pronounce the names of French Canadian athletes. I use the word “correctly” because I take particular offense at the laziness many English Canadians show when speaking their own language. Recently, I did a telephone interview with a chef in Kelowna. After a halfhour conversation I thanked him for his time, and complimented him on his speech. “It’s a pleasure to speak to someone who speaks in full sentences and even paragraphs,” I said. “Isn’t that what we’re supposed to do?” he responded. It is, but it is certainly not the norm. We tend to rush through our thoughts, letting our mouths get ahead of our brains. The result is a peppering of “likes” and “you knows” substituting for thoughtful pauses. The English language has a long history of refusing to acknowledge pronunciation and spelling from other languages. How else to explain our pronunciation of Paris, which in French is Par-ee, or Rome, which in Italian is Roma, or Munich, which in German is München? I usually put it down to an arrogant vestige of the British Empire, that vast global influence where the sun never set. Firenze became Florence, España became Spain, Sverige became Sweden, and so on. Youth interns bridge digital divide
Emma Feltham describes her recent experience working with an elderly patron at the library: “Over the past few weeks, I have shown her how to check and delete emails, answer FaceTime calls, edit her contacts, check the weather, use Safari and download apps. She is now significantly more comfortable using her iPad and can more easily connect with her family and friends who live out of town.” Emma, along with Jessa Morris, is employed at the library as a Community Access Program youth intern. The two positions, which are funded by grants from Industry Canada, are intended to help bridge the digital divide between those who have access to technology and those who do not. Providing physical access to computers is just one component of the library’s approaches to alleviating the effects of this divide. The other is providing support on how to use new technology, and that’s where Emma and Jessa come in. “I enjoy helping people with technology,” says Emma. “Whether they need help with their iPad, sending an email, or just have general technology questions, I am happy to help out. This job has given me a chance to help others in a way that might seem small, but impacts them greatly. Knowing that I have made even the
smallest difference for someone is extremely rewarding.” Jessa adds that she loves “working with people. It’s really rewarding being able to help them with their technological challenges.”
website and promotional materials, presenting a series of public workshops, reaching out to local businesses and seniors centres, updating the apps on the library iPads, and more. The position has “helped me to develop my design portfolio, and gain experience using design programs (like Adobe Creative Suite) in a professional setting,” says Jessa. “The samples of work that I have as a result of the job will be invaluable for me in the future.” In 18 year-old Emma, the work has kindled a different interest. “I have learned that I love teaching people new things. I plan to explore a career in teaching.” We are extremely privileged to have these two young people working with us at the library. Please feel free to bring your devices or your questions in, or just drop by to say hello. Before signing off, I’d like to remind you to mark your calendars for Feb. 28 when East Shore author Ellen Burt will be joining us. Ellen is the third author of the year to visit the library, following Luanne Armstrong and Valerie Comer, and we are expecting a wonderful evening of stories, discussion and good fellowship. Please join us. Aaron Francis is the chief librarian at the Creston and District Public Library.

As Jessa relates, “My best experience so far has been helping a photographer transfer his slide photographs into digital. It was really great to talk to him about his photography and hear about his stories and experiences.” Emma describes helping a patron upload Christmas photos to Facebook for her grandchildren in Vancouver, “She was so happy. She couldn’t stop thanking me!” In addition to being available most days to help library patrons on a drop-in basis, Emma and Jessa have been engaged in a variety of other tasks on behalf of the library, including developing a new library

Senate should be abolished To the Editor: The recent anguished attention belabouring the unfortunate state of the archaic senate of Canada has been consuming much time and attention. Should it be reformed or abolished? Abolished of course, since it serves no practical purpose except as a reward system for party sympathizers and donors. Established at a time when presentday Canada did not exist, it is replete with inequalities, and while constitutional enshrinement at the time seemed a safeguard, in the present atmosphere it is an unfortunate shackle lacking present-day reality and common sense. How should we deal with this impediment? If Mr. Harper is sincere in tackling this conundrum as he once was wearing his reform cloak, I suggest a simple solution: Rather than continue with his orgy of ill-advised Senate appointments, stop! Stop all appointments. Ask the Liberals to do the same. Due to attrition, the red chamber will soon be empty, and the last aggrandized denizen will shamble off into well-deserved obscurity. Problem solved. With the red chamber now empty, it may be turned into a museum, recalling its unequal, unelected, undisciplined and inglorious past. Larry Ewashen Creston
‘Radicals’ not good neighbours To the Editor: Opinions, points of view — call them what you may, we all have them, good or bad, right or wrong. First of all, I would like to thank Margaret Miller for her letter in the Advance on Feb. 13. It expresses my thoughts precisely and helped me from falling into the trap of retaliation and lowering myself to their standards when penning this letter. In Creston, of late, there seems to be no shortage of controversial topics. There is the issue with the doctors being locked out, which is shameful — there, I have an opinion. Then there is the ongoing daylight time issue, but this is not just a simple yes or no; it is also what time zone we should be in. I think I’m in the minority on this one. Should the valley (and town) allow/ promote industrial/commercial development creating much needed employment and tax base or just sit by, watching things diminish and doing nothing as they are with the doctors’ dispute? West Creston fire protection and the actions of a few misguided radicals is the big issue on my mind. Misters Belavy and Certik appear to have launched an all-out attack against anyone who does not agree with them and their faulted opinions. This is not being a good neighbour or member of the community as a whole, and is only counterproductive! We have seen garbage spread and a dog poisoned. Is this a result of all this dissention being stirred up and is this the kind of community you want to live in?
OPINION LINE
The letters that are appearing in our mailboxes and being posted are full of misinformation, offensive cowardly attacks and are borderline hate mail. This is a very slippery slope you are standing on! It is beyond my grasp why someone would not want fire protection, especially if you are not carrying any insurance, and if you are there is a huge saving on your fire insurance contrary to what you would have us believe. Would you have us get rid of police and ambulance services, as well, to save some tax dollars? Fire, like a flood, is totally devastating, not just in terms of property but loss of lives, as well! Having no fire protection is like taking your vehicle to a mechanic with no tools. Dave Patstone West Creston
Intersection plan could be safer, cheaper To the Editor: The construction of the Pine StreetNorthwest Boulevard intersection is drawing near. It’s going to be such an improvement. The cost published in the Advance in January was $5 million. I attended the open house at the town hall to look at the plans and ask any questions or comments. All the people involved in planning and engineering the intersection were present. My question was, “Why the delta islands?” These are the triangle islands in the intersection that pedestrians have to cross the turning lane, without a walk light, to get to. The only answer I got was they are a place of refuge for pedestrians. My point was that the intersection would be safer for pedestrians without these islands. Instead, pedestrians could cross the entire street with a walk light, like the vast majority of crosswalks. No one in the room disagreed that this would be safer. I asked if the islands were expensive to construct and the answer was yes, very. So if we could build the intersection safer, and at the same time cost less, why wouldn’t we do it? I believe, for the most part, our town and provincial employees are conscious of the way they spend our tax dollars. Our taxes are high and always increasing. Here is an opportunity to save some tax dollars, and we need to do that any time we have an opportunity to. Make the intersection safer, and at the same time cost less — it’s a nobrainer. Eliminate the delta islands. Don Lukasiewich Wynndel
Business laws fight injustice To the Editor: (Re: This is the Life: “No Winners Here”, Feb. 13 Advance, page 6) I am upset about the closure of the Osprey Medical Clinic, about the doctors and their patients being locked out (and I am a patient of one of those doctors), about the manner in which this closure transpired and the silence on
the part of the people that did the closing. And, yes, I am somewhat upset about the lack of opinions (maybe because of fear) on this issue from some elected officials, and them copping out by just saying, “It’s a business matter.” It is really disturbing to know that all of the patients of these doctors are scrambling for a means to see their doctor and trying to obtain adequate medical attention. I am also galled at the Feb. 13 column by Lorne Eckersley, on this topic, most galling being the description he used to describe those that are laying blame without having more than the most superficial knowledge. How does Mr. Eckersley know they only have a superficial knowledge? Mr. Eckersley also states, “While we are all entitled to our opinions, there are only a small handful of people who have all the facts in the matter.” Again, how does Mr. Eckersley come upon such divine knowledge, when he himself in the same column, states that he is not even sure if there is such a thing as truth? Maybe — just a thought — Mr. Eckersley is thinking that people’s knowledge of this situation is gathered from just what they read in his articles in the Advance — there is probably not enough information there. The laws in Canada, including business laws, are not that tricky. They really are, if dispensed correctly, trying to fight against injustices — that, more than a handful of people do understand. And, I got 100 per cent in university business law and I concur! People do research and want to find out, especially if they do not have access to their physician, why this access is being denied. Of course, they are going to search out the truth. Also, with regard to Mr. Eckersley’s comment, “For all the emotion that has come into play, this is a business issue,” most wars, fights and quarrels, where there are deep emotions, have come into being because of broken promises, and a promise/agreement is the core of a contract (a business issue). A contract does not even have to be a piece of paper; a contract in our country, thank goodness, can still be a person’s word given to someone. Now, there’s truth! Rhonda Barter Creston
Service at hospital was appreciated To the Editor: On Jan. 14, I took my wife, Ellen, to the emergency room at the Creston Valley Hospital (CVH) because she was disoriented and confused, and exhibited the signs of a mini stroke. She had been in the Foothills Medical Center (FMC) in Calgary two weeks previous, with pancreas problems, and after seven days of treatment and subsequent outpatient testing she was told to be cautious of her diet and further testing would occur. We then travelled to our home on the East Shore. Fortunately, when I took my wife to CVH, we had all of the records and tests with us, and upon presenting them to the Creston ER physician, my wife was immediately placed on an intravenous feed and the appropriate blood tests were performed. From that point on, she was given full and professional care, informed of what had happened to her (recurrence of pancreatitis) and consulted on what the next recommended steps should be. Understand more by Five CDCC staff are now certified lifesaving instructors walking in other shoes
First off, we want to congratulate five of our staff for successfully passing the lifesaving instructor course we held a couple weekends ago. This is a pretty intense course held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, which consisted of a mix of classroom and in-pool training.

Speaking of poking around on the Internet, when you get tired of watching the best of the Super Bowl commercials, check out something more educational as our spring leisure guide goes on the website after Feb. 26. Following that, expect your copy in the mail (unless of course you have “no flyers”), the week of March 3. We have an assortment of great programs, training opportunities, special events and spring break activities. Want to see some great curling? At the end of February, the Butterfly Bonspiel hits the circles, followed by the BC Masters championships the next weekend. The Masters is a five-day round robin event at the Creston Curling Centre, in which teams compete for the BC Masters title and the opportunity to represent B.C. at the Canadian Masters championship in April. Visit the Creston Curling Club website, www. crestoncurling.com, for the full schedule of events. Take a break from the Masters tourney and catch the Creston Valley Figure Skating Carnival on March 8. Of course, the final word goes to the Creston Valley Thunder Cats and the fantastic job they’ve been doing this year as we head into playoffs shortly as leaders in the Eddie Mountain Division. Go, Cats! Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

They say to understand someone we need to walk in their shoes. Sometimes that situation happens spontaneously, and I am learning what it is like to be immobilized on one side of the body. I am learning what it feels like for many who live alone with physical restrictions, and how to adapt and work on “manual” and be creative with limited movement.

From page 7 After six days it was established that her system could not tolerate even a very bland diet without a flare-up of the pancreas, and that she would need to be placed on a “food tube”. This procedure was not possible at CVH, and it was recommended that she be returned to Calgary immediately. We did so the next day and were admitted immediately into the FMC. Previous to this incident, and also during the time my wife was in the Creston hospital, we heard complaints about the care and quality of the Creston hospital. Based on my wife’s experience, such complaints are totally unjustified and are made by individuals who have never experienced the
What a learning experience! Now I have lost my job as assistant chimney sweep! I am learning to slow down, and am surprised how the body is adapting. My left thumb is in a cast so I cannot hold things with it. However, my left index finger and middle finger work hard to compensate. I cannot walk but I can do a soft shoe shuffle with both feet across a smooth floor for short distances. I can now limp up our 14 stairs standing up. Before I had to lift the left leg up with the right arm as I humped up each step on my rump. I am fortunate to have a husband who is very patient, kind and helpful, but I make sure I learn to be as independent as I can for when he is out. I feel confident I shall be fully functioning by summer. However, I can’t imagine what it must be like to realize recovery may never allow me to move easily and without pain. difficult situations in the larger facilities, or perhaps by individuals who complain about everything without cause or reason. My wife can’t say enough good about what she experienced at CVH. It is clean and organized, the staff is professional and exhibit a wonderful bedside manner, and keep the patient and family well informed, and the doctors are professional and well qualified. The management at CVH should be proud of what they provide, and the community should be proud of what they have at this facility. A special thank you to Dr. Hopkins, all of the professionals and caregivers at CVH, the admissions staff, charge nurse and all of the nurses and support staff — you were wonderful and we can’t say enough good about you. The opera Turandot will be shown at the Creston Valley Public Library at 7 p.m. Feb. 22. The story originated with the 12th century Persian poet, Nizami. The history that led to the operatic production is complex and fascinating. The theme of the poem was rewritten by playwrights, and Fredrick Schiller ’s version interested Giacomo Puccini. After the libretto was written, Puccini went to work on the music. However, he was not satisfied with the final duet and became ill while the work was still in progress. Puccini died in 1924 before completing the opera. A conclusion was

written in 1926 by Italian composer Franco Alfano. The role of Turandot is sung by Eva Marton and the incomparable Placido Domingo performs as Calaf. His father is the vanquished King of Tartary (Paul Plishka), whose servant is Liu, sung by Leona Mitchell. One opera connoisseur credits the success of this Met Opera production to Placido Domingo and berates Eva Marton. Another connoisseur berates Domingo and compliments Marton. In both cases, the negative comments are intermingled with compliments. The opera consists of three acts and the setting is China. English subtitles will accompany the Italian singing.
An exciting blend of contemporary hits, show tunes and Operatic classics, a tenor who commands ovations at every performance..

Creston Review issues now available online CRESTON MUSEUM
Twenty-six years of the Creston Review newspaper are now available online! The Creston Review was established in 1908 by J.J. Atherton, and was the first newspaper serving the Creston Valley. For many years, the Review was Creston’s only local paper, and was usually a weekly paper, though there were a few brief periods when it was published semi-weekly. It changed hands a number of times until taken over by longtime publisher Herb Legg in 1938, but retained its name and its unashamedly “local” focus throughout its life. The Review published its last issue in 1983. And, for many of the years since, the only way you could read the Review was by going to the Creston Museum or the provincial library. But that is no longer the case. “We are really excited about this,” says Creston Museum manager Tammy Hardwick. “We go to the newspapers all the time for our own research, and the vast majority of the public research requests we get also require going through newspapers. They are the best source of information we’ve got about Creston’s early years.” However, every time a newspaper is taken out of the stack, read, possibly photocopied, and put back again, it runs the risk of getting damaged. “The best way of preserving the information that the newspapers contain is by never handling the newspapers,” says Hardwick.
A portion of the front page of the Jan. 28, 1909, Creston Review, one of over 10,000 pages of the newspaper now available online.
“But, until now, that has not been an option, because the whole purpose of preserving that information is to be able to use it.” Now, researchers can access that information anytime, and anywhere, thanks to a grant from Columbia-Kootenay Cultural Alliance, which enabled the Creston Museum to digitize the Review from 1909 through to the end of 1935, and make them
available online through the University of British Columbia Library. The digitized newspapers are fully searchable and printable, and form part of an online collection of newspapers from all over the province. When asked why the digitization ends in 1935, Hardwick says, “Part of it is the cost — we did as much as we could with the $4,000 we had available. But mostly, we
stopped there because of copyright issues. We had to be reasonably sure they were in the public domain, which they would be if the owner died more than 50 years ago. Otherwise, we needed to get the owner’s permission to reproduce them.” Will later years eventually be digitized? Hardwick hopes so. “We’ll continue working on the copyright thing — if we can track
down Herb Legg’s heirs and if they are willing to give written permission, we could complete the collection,” she says, then laughs and adds, “Of course, we’ll need a few thousand dollars, too.” In the meantime, later years of the Creston Review are still available at the Creston Museum, and the early years can be read at historicalnewspapers.library.ubc. ca/info/collection/crestonrev.

In Loving Memory Of
Josh Hoffart
Though only with us for a brief 30 years, Josh has left a lasting impression on all who knew and loved him. Being a kind and honest man, Josh brought joy and laughter to everyone ... and everywhere he went. Always eager to display an impression or an antic that would make you laugh or smile, are only some memories we all cherish and hold dear in our hearts.
better than others. Our memories of the good times we spent together with Josh and Maria, will forever be vibrant in our thoughts and hearts.
HOFFART
July 18, 2013 forever changed our lives - and the lives of many others. We will never be the same. Life will never be the same. We changed as individuals, as couples and as a family. Our hearts are broken... but not our spirit, as we struggle to put pieces back together and try to carry on. Some days are
Today is a day we would like to say a sincere and heartfelt “THANK-YOU” to our dear family, friends and the loving community of Creston. Also to those who traveled from far and near, to pay their respects to Josh and Maria, and to comfort our families. Your love and continued support is what sustains us every day. It is what gives us strength and courage. We wish to remember the great person he was, also to not forget the things he was proud of and stood for.
Josh Hoffart Memorial Fund
On behalf of our family we would like to say “THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS” to all who donated to the Josh Hoffart Memorial Fund. We are honored to report that $3,640.12 was raised and was donated to the Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association on BC’s first ever Family Day - February 10, 2014. This day holds a very special place in our hearts which we hope to make this year one of an annual tradition. The money graciously donated by all of you on behalf of the Josh Hoffart Memorial Fund will see that a few underprivileged, local aspiring hockey players can hit the ice this upcoming year without having to worry about the cost of registration. On top of that, we’d like to ensure the individual has all the necessary gear to compete with confidence and play safely. We would like to direct you to the ‘In Loving Memory Of Josh Hoffart’ Facebook page for more information on this in the coming months. Josh was very passionate about hockey; playing minor hockey in Creston, he developed strong friendships and countless memories that still live on through all of us that knew and loved him. The raising of Josh’s banner at the Johnny Bucyk Arena in Creston on December 13, 2013 was an amazing gesture by the Creston and District Community Complex, the Thunder Cats team, the Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association and all those who made this day so special to our family. Many individuals need special recognition for their tireless efforts in seeing this dream come true for us. We would like to give an honorary mention to: • Grady Hunt and the Creston Valley Thunder Cats hockey team • Todd Livingstone and Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association • Aaron Murphy, Mark Folick, Matthew and Jeff Faulks, Chrystal Brown and Carolyn Crawford for going above and beyond • The Creston Ramada and Ricky’s All Day Grill for your substantial donation • Local 308 and staff members for your unwavering support • Shaleen Hauck for taking care of business • All of our family residing in Saskatchewan who held their own fund raising events and donating to support our local cause • Every single person who came out in support of Josh’s banner raising at the Thunder Cats game on December 13 Once again, a humbling “THANK-YOU” ... to EVERYONE in the community of Creston, throughout BC, Alberta and Mexico. Your kindness, support and contributions to this fund has truly astonished us. We thank each and every one of you ... from the bottom of our hearts.

Community Ambassadors were not able to join us to be thanked in person, being thwarted by the heavy and blowing snow in Cranbrook. Creative partnerships like this are a living example of a caring community, and for us, like so many other non-profit organizations, are one of the keys to the viability of our programs. The luncheon gathering began with introductions by each group. Last month, I reported that we hadn’t hired the new staff person. Well that has changed, and we welcome the smiling face and talents of Hans Bringman, program assistant and cook. Clients, volunteers and staff made Valentine’s decorations for the tables and walls. They add an extra cheery feel to the centre, especially on these cloudy days. Volunteer Terje Munkerud stopped by to help with a plumbing issue. Clients come and go after lunch with friends or relatives; some on the TAPS bus to go shopping or maybe to go back home. Some attend once a week, and others are everyday participants often helping out. Watch out if program co-ordinator Bridget Currie sees you are sitting still and willing, for you’ll soon be offered a task — although, judging by the smiling

faces and constant attendance, it seems to be just what people want. As part of our wellness program, volunteers Elaine Tkachuck and Nicole Nilsson run a monitoring clinic every three months at TAPS for five health indicators, and volunteers Eileen Boyden, Kathy Fowler, Margo Beaudry and Ron Hurry run a foot care clinic each month. Clients taking advantage of this have records kept and it is a way of assessing over time or being alert to sudden changes that the client can then have followed up by their doctor. It’s a time for conversation, a safe place to ask questions and a great preventative initiative. We wish to send heartfelt appreciation to our ongoing donors, volunteers and partners. This month’s special thanks goes to the Crest View knitters, Krafty Kronys and Telus ambassadors. Next month, we’ll feature Gleaners as one of our valued supporters. We’re just a phone call away if you want to volunteer, 250-428-5585. Maureen Cameron is the community liaison development co-ordinator for the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors.

Stewart Fawdrey
July 21, 1929 - January 30, 2014 Stewart passed away in his home in Qualicum Beach on Thursday, January 30th at the age of 84. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy in 2008. Stewart leaves to mourn his passing; sons, Glenn (Kerry), Donn (Betty) and Briann; daughter, Jannis (Ken); grandchildren, Kevin, Michelle, Scott, Bert, Megan, Erin, and Chelsea; great granddaughter, Addison; great grandsons, Kayden and Owen; brother, Aleck; and sister, Kit. Stewart was born in North Vancouver on July 21, 1929 to Norman and Della Fawdrey. He grew up in Lynn Valley moving to Peace River with his family at age 16. A year later, Stewart moved back to North Vancouver to look after his maternal grandmother, Maud. He worked cutting roadside grass with a horse and mower – giving all of his earnings to help support his grandmother. He lost this job when the municipality purchased a tractor for the job, so he did odd jobs, landscaping and cutting firewood, using a one-horse wagon for delivery. It was during one of these jobs that he met Dorothy. They were married October 10, 1952, and moved to a small farm in Maple Ridge. In early 1960’s, Stewart brought his growing family to Errington, where his love of the heavy horses, particularly Percheron’s, allowed him to make a living doing what he enjoyed. He always used the heavy horses in the course of daily work and in the running of the family farm.
To send a condolence to the family please visit www.yatesfuneral.ca YATES FUNERAL SERVICE & CREMATORIUM (250-248-5859) in care of arrangements.
Mable Moore of Creston, BC passed away of natural causes on February 11, 2014, at 82 years of age. Mable was born in Creston on August 28, 1932. It was also in Creston where she was educated. She began working at the young age of 16 in Nelson, BC at a match factory, chopping blocks of wood to make wooden matches. Mable worked many jobs throughout her lifetime. She met and married Albert (Bert) Floyd Moore and they moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. It wasn’t long before they moved back to the Kootenays, as Mable dearly missed her family and the mountains. After being married for some time they realized they were not going to be blessed with children, so they were very lucky to be able to choose the children they wanted to share their love with. Their daughter Nikki arrived in 1964, followed by a baby boy Bill in 1966 to complete the family. Mable loved to knit and crochet. She made crocheted blankets for many of her nieces’ and nephews’ children as well as for her two grandchildren. Mable also knitted dish cloths for everyone. It wasn’t Christmas without getting her homemade dish cloths. Mable loved to Àsh and camp and spend time with her many nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed gardening and sharing the produce of her garden. Mable was predeceased by her husband Bert, and dear friend Don Pears, her sisters Lillian Pendry, and Irene Blackmore brothers George, Harold, Don, and Kenny Osborne, and parents Harold and Bertha May Osborne. Mable is survived by her brother Virgil (Bill) Osborne; daughter Nikki (Carl) Olsson; son Bill; grandchildren Kimberly and Kristoffer Olsson, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, grand-nieces and grandnephews. A Memorial Funeral Service was held at GF Oliver Funeral Chapel on Monday February 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Guy Roy Celebrant. Friends wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to the Canadian Diabetes Association, #360 – 1385 West 8th Ave. Vancouver, BC V6H 3V9 or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC, #208 – 1212 W. Broadway, Vancouver, BC V6H 3V2.

Activity Base finds new homes for used sports gear I
f you bought shoes at Glenn’s Village Bootery, there’s a good chance you might have been helped by a teenaged Carrie Czar. And if you visit the same location today, you’ll find her there, now as the owner of Activity Base. The consignment sporting goods store is the first business Czar has owned, and since she Story and opened it in August, the photo by 1126 Canyon St. store has Brian become well stocked with Lawrence skis, inline skates, helmets, jerseys, clothing — the list could go on and on. “The people who came in right away come in now and go, ‘Wow!’ ” said Czar, who was born and raised in Creston. She and her husband have three sons, and the whole family is “pretty outdoorsy and active,” said Czar, who curls and plays slo-pitch. “We’ve got a lot of sports gear all the time,” she said. “You pay a lot for equipment. We were lucky we could hand down things.” As many can attest, getting into a sport is rarely a cheap process, but at the consignment store, many items are about half their original retail price. “When you’re looking for a sport, it makes it more affordable to get into it,” Czar said. “The parents are happy, the kids are happy. You can get in with an entry-level cost that isn’t horrible.” Often, Czar will search the Internet to find the appropriate selling prices for a particular item. But more often than not, consignors will have some idea about pricing.
Carrie Czar in her downtown Creston store, Activity Base.
“If they know what they want to get out of it, they price it,” she said. Sporting goods brought in by consignors can be well out of the ordinary, Czar said, a fact proven by two Canadian Olympic hockey jerseys hanging on the wall. And a beautifully tailored coat and fox fur hood from the now-defunct Inuvik Sewing Centre is also one of a kind. “Some of the things that are brought in are pretty vintage,” Czar said. “It’s neat for collectors.” Although Activity Base carries a wide range of products — and also sharpens
skates — there a few things missing. Czar has had requests related to darts, billiards and snowshoes, but nothing in those areas has been consigned. With the latter, at least, she is able to direct customers down the street to Nadan Nessie, which rents snowshoes. And she appreciates the support offered by other similar businesses, with Activity Base, Gleaners, Kidtastic Children’s Clothing Company, Mawson’s Sports and Nadan Nessie Gear all happily sending customers to each other’s stores. That sort of co-oper-
ation makes it easier for shoppers to stay in the Creston Valley. “It’s nice that everyone works so well together,” said Czar. “At the end of the day, it’s knowing you saved a trip — someone didn’t have to go out of town to get it.” At the same time, she’s happy to give older products a new lease on life. “It’s kind of rewarding — someone is going to get a product at a low price and get some use out of it,” Czar said. “We’re a recycling town. It’s nice to see it be used and not throw it away.”

Thunder Cats beat Rockets twice on weekend BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
After the mixed success — one win, two losses and a tie — that followed their 13-game winning streak, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats returned to their winning ways, defeating the Golden Rockets 8-1 and 4-3 on the weekend. “That could be a potential first-round [playoff] matchup for us,” said Thunder Cats head coach Josh Hepdtich. “We played our game and did that for a full 60 minutes.” With 76 points, the Thunder Cats have secured first place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, while the Rockets bring up the rear with 34 points, one behind the fourth-place Columbia Valley Rockies. Between the Rockies and Thunder Cats are the Kimberley Dynamiters, with 58 points, and Fernie Ghostriders, with 54. For Friday’s game, the Rockets visited Creston’s John Bucyk Arena, where goals by
Trevor Hanna (two), Ethan Rusnack, Jaymes Veitch and Matti Jmaeff gave the Thunder Cats a 5-0 lead after the first period. “We kind of just kept building on that as the game went on,” said Hepditch. The ability to rotate four lines through the game has been one of the Thunder Cats’ greatest assets this season, and this game was no different. “That’s something we really wanted to key on,” said Hepditch. “That was our game plan going in and it was nice to be able to do that.” Between second-period goals by Logan Styler and Colby Livingstone, Hanna scored again, earning a hat trick. The Rockets finally scored their single goal with four minutes left in the third period. Despite the near-shutout, the Rockets still put in a great deal of effort, noted Hepditch. “I don’t think the score reflected the game Golden played,” he said. On Saturday night, the Thunder Cats visited Golden for a game that saw the
Thunder Cats down 1-0 after the first period. “We had a little bit of a slow start,” said Hepditch. “We just didn’t have the intensity of the night before.” Nearly six minutes into the second period, Hanna scored for the Thunder Cats, marking his 41st 2013-2014 goal, and beating the previous record for most goals in a season set by Brandon Formosa two years ago. Jmaeff followed with a goal a minute later, and two goals by the Rockets had the Thunder Cats down 3-2 at the end of the second period. A few big saves by goalie Kyle Michalovsky kept the Rockets from scoring in the third period. Formosa scored on a power play halfway through the third, and Livingstone scored the game-winner with just under two minutes left in the game. “He played well all game,” said Hepditch. “It was nice to see him get that goal for us.” On Wednesday, the Thunder Cats play
the season’s penultimate game when they visit the Grand Forks Border Bruins, who, with 36 points, are at the bottom of the Neil Murdoch Division and shut out of the playoffs. The Thunder Cats may not need the win, but that won’t stop them from trying. “We can’t really move anywhere in our division, so we’re not really looking too much into it,” said Hepditch. “But we don’t want to create any bad habits. We’re going to play our game, and see where the chips fall.” On Saturday, the Thunder Cats play their final game of the season, hosting the Rockies, who may already be shut out of the playoffs if they don’t beat the Rockets on Friday. And if that isn’t the case, “we’re by no means going to just hand over two points,” said Hepditch. “We don’t want to have any impact.” The Thunder Cats will return to the John Bucyk Arena on Tuesday, as they begin the first round of the division’s playoffs. “We want to make sure boys are rested and ready for bigger picture,” said Hepdtich.

To upgrade to this $20,500 LE Eco model is $1,035 over the S model and $750 over the regular LE. I prefer the S trim for its more aggressive 17-inch wheels compared to the LE and LE Eco, which come with smaller 16-inch wheels. This B.C. owned Intermeccanica Roadster wears its colour with pride wherever it shows. It is a faithful reproduction on the 1959 Porsche 356-A Convertible “D”, which the Vancouver-based custom builders began producing in 1982. This car was hand built in 2011 and would cost around $95,000 to reproduce today. It has standard equipment such as Porsche suspension, four-wheel-disc brakes, and 356-type reclining seats. Power is provided by an Audi 1.8-litre, 185 hp turbo fuel injected engine with auto transmission. It has a full leather interior, square weave carpeting in silver blue with pink leather binding. The custom 356 instrument panel has with pink facing and the courtesy lights even provide a pink hue to the interior.
