The first step in the dream of a Coal Harbour-type of development in Maple Ridge has been taken, but it’s going to be years before hammers swing and building begins. Canadian Overseas Group, in 2012, pitched a marina, boardwalk, apartment towers, shops and a park beside the Fraser River on the site of its former log-sort operation next to Haney Wharf. With that log sorting site now vacant, or soon to be, the company can decide the property’s ultimate fate. Overseas Group president Ron Andersen said the company has bought a new log-sorting site on the Stave River, close to its Andersen Pacific Forest Products sawmill. That will make moving logs from area woodlots and community forests to the mill more efficient. See Waterfront, p8

stopped by Ridge Meadows RCMP on May 24, 2013 after an officer noticed “an overwhelming odour of marijuana permeating the air” when he drove past a white cube van. Police allege Niger was the driver. According to court records, Niger produced a Health Canada “Authorization to Possess” permit when Const. Mike Moore approached him. Although the permit he showed was expired, documents show RCMP later determined he had a valid medical marijuana license that allowed him to grow 195

plants, store 8,775 grams of dried marijuana, and possess or transport 1,200 grams. Police searched the van and found marijuana in garbage bags that a RCMP spokesperson said was “well-in excess of the allowable limit.” Court documents show 504 kilograms of marijuana, or 504,000 grams, was seized. Niger, who is known to police, was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking. He has one previous drug trafficking charge, in 2007, but no convictions. The Combined Forces Special

Enforcement Unit would not comment on any alleged gang association due to privacy concerns, but court records show Niger was stopped by the gang task force in 2012 and issued Motor Vehicle Act violations for driving an uninsured vehicle and without a licence. He pleaded guilty to both counts on Jan. 14 and was issued fines for $345 and $140, respectively. Sgt. ‘A friendship made in heaven’ When buddies get together, it’s about them by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter

t’s the start of another school day, and Garibaldi secondary principal Grant Frend gets his son Brady out of bed and ready for Grade 1.

“I say, ‘Brady, is Jimmy going to visit you today?’ And he says, ‘Yea, yea,’ and he gets excited.” Brady has a vocabulary, but doesn’t speak in sentences. He goes to school in a wheeled walker. Not the design an elderly person would use, but one he can sit in and scoot around. Holding someone’s hand, he can walk down the halls of Alexander Robinson elementary. Jimmy Ferron has just completed the education journey that Brady is beginning. He also had unique learning needs. The 19-year-old has an ever-present smile, and left behind a lot of friends and important social connections at Riverside Centre. Close to being “typical,” he has moved away from home, supported by a couple. He really wants to get a job, and is getting ready for that. He is a client of Young Husband Resources, and a support worker takes him dog walking, bowling, on bus trips around the Lower Mainland, and to Quantum Gymnastics. When developmentally delayed students meet at the gymnastics club, Jimmy is the star of the show. He’s completely fearless in his trampoline stunts, so his support worker is scared for him. “I tell him, ‘That was amazing. Now, don’t do that again,’” laughs Leah Gordon. It was at the gym that Jimmy and Brady met for the first time. Despite the age gap, they hit it off. “They formed a bond, and we thought it was a good idea to get them together,” explained Debbie Carr, a special education assistant who works with Brady at Alexander Robinson. Carr said the two years of training to do her job cannot completely prepare a SEA for the variety of clients and their special needs. The best way to learn is on the job. Usually, a buddy or mentor for a special needs child will be a typi-

cal student. But after more than 20 years, she had an instinct that Jimmy and Brady would be good for each other. “I saw the warmth in Jimmy, and Brady has that same warm, happy personality and they just meshed. It seemed to be a good fit instantly. “He helps Brady, and Brady helps him,” she explained. “Teaching Brady really helps Jimmy’s

confidence.” It’s a fun job for Jimmy. “I want to be around Brady,” he explains. “Sometimes I try and help him drink his juice,” he adds, remembering the many aspects of his “job.” “And we play Playdough all the time – we roll them, and make numbers. I hold his hand, and we

play kick the ball. “And I help him ‘don’t go out the door.’ “With Brady here, I like him, and he’s a good kid.” Jimmy’s support worker Gordon sees changes, like Jimmy tells Brady how he was able to take the bus by himself. “Jimmy wants to branch out on his own, and he’s dying to be independent,” said Gordon. “He wants a job so badly, and this is so great for him.” Alexander Robinson principal Donna Heikkila watches the two from the doorway of the resource room, where they spend their time. Most of the school day, Brady is in his regular Grade 1 class, except when Jimmy visits. “Jimmy looks at this like his job, and he takes it very seriously,” she said. “It’s a friendship made in heaven. It’s such a win-win.” Frend says it’s an example of people in the public education system surpassing all expectations. “I think it’s awesome,” he said. “For my son, having an older role model is great.”

“I’m so thankful for the SEA and caretaker who make this happen. It’s meeting their needs in a really creative way.” Learning the alphabet or practicing motor control skills are beneficial, but the relationship between Jimmy and Brady goes deeper than that.

“I think it’s awesome. For my son, having an older role model is great.” Grant Frend, father Frend said Brady doesn’t really have a friendship circle. His main playmate is his older sister, Jaelyn, who is in Grade 3. “The best big sister ever,” Carr calls her. “He doesn’t run around like the other kids, and he’s not verbal like the other kids,” Frend said of Brady. “Jimmy’s a friend for him – someone he hangs out with, and it’s about him.”

“During the course of our investigations, some of those who we arrest have been in the possession of medical marijuana licences and have been in contravention of them,” he added. Ridge Meadows RCMP, however, would not say if officers are seeing rampant abuse of medical marijuana possession permits locally, but a 2012 report by the national police force warned that organized criminal networks are taking advantage of Canada’s medical marijuana program. The heavily censored intelligence report, obtained by the Canadian Press, revealed that criminals are using family members and associates with clean police records to get around program safeguards. “Gaining access to or control of a medical marijuana grow operation is highly desirable for criminal networks due to the array of opportuni-

ties it would present for the illicit production and diversion of high-grade medical marijuana,” says the report, which was completed in May 2012. It also noted that screening an applicant through a criminal record check is insufficient to keep undesirable elements from infiltrating the program. Niger’s sister, Parmjit Kaur Sandhu, has been linked to several marijuana grow operations in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, both legal and illegal. In December 2012, three growops were discovered in an apartment building at 22355 McIntosh Avenue, owned by Sandhu, after a fire. Sandhu was also listed as the owner of 11715 – 224th Street, a property that housed “The Local Gym” and the Golden Ears Boxing Club. The building was demolished in 2010 after police discovered a large growop. A house she owns on

Michael Morden called Niger’s arrest “a great example of police being prepared to do what they need to do.” “God knows what’s going to happen come April 1,” he added. Morden remains frustrated that there are no plans in place to deal with the abuse of medical pot possession permits by criminals and the dismantling of home-based groups. Enforcement will once again fall to local police, the fire department and bylaws staff, he notes. “My single biggest concern is that the collapse of this will be paid for by the taxpayer,” said Morden. “There is no preparedness for all this. The criminal aspect of all of this has got to go.” Morden would like to use B.C.’s Community Charter or local bylaws to recoup the costs of inspecting and remediating illegal grows.

Richardson Road in Pitt Meadows was raided once in 2009 after a grow op was discovered, but tenants eventually obtained a license from Health Canada to grow medical marijuana there. Health Canada does not comment on individual cases and would not say what happens when a person with an “authorization to possess” is found violating the permit and whether background checks are done to reveal criminal connections. Starting April 1, however, Niger and the roughly 38,000 Canadians currently licensed to carry medicinal marijuana will no longer be allowed to grow their own cannabis or source it from smallscale designated growers. Instead, only large, commercial operations authorized by Health Canada will produce and sell pot. Patients will only get dried cannabis shipped to them via mail or courier, a dispensary

While the developer of a small subdivision next to Jackson Farm is using the name of the future park as a marketing tool, Friends of Jackson Farm activist Stuart Pledge is wondering when the real thing takes shape. “It is now over three years since the district obtained ownership of the Jackson Farm Park site and as far as I know there continues to be no budget for even the minimum of maintenance on the site,” Pledge says in an e-mail to Maple Ridge mayor and council. Volunteers have trimmed blackberry bushes to identify historic fruit trees and

shrubs so they’re not mowed down when park construction begins. But the site “continues to deteriorate through the neglect of its owner, the District of Maple Ridge.” Part of the historic Jackson Farm was preserved in 2010 after a deal with the developers, the Redmond family and other landowners. In return for allowing housing on the upper northeast corner of the old Jackson Farm on 248th Street, the Redmonds and others gave the District of Maple Ridge 37 acres of rolling farmland in the southwest corner of the old farm on 102nd Avenue and 244th Street for future park use. Pledge led the Friends of Jackson Farm group which lobbied successfully to preserve the farm. He’s also suggesting that the developer of a

small subdivision adjacent to the park’s northwest corner change the name of the development from Jackson Park – to Jackson Slopes or Jackson Edge. “I am curious how council members view the appropriation of the name Jackson Park for this small housing development?” For Coun. Bob Masse, the district has no control over what a business wants to call its products. “The developer can call it whatever he wants.” Masse said he didn’t see any urgency in developing the park, adding the land is being preserved for later public use. Deciding on the future form and use of the park will take a lot of planning and public consultation, he added. Neither does he see a future council opting to pull the land from park

use and allow it to be developed. “I would highly doubt that would happen.” Parks and recreation services general manager Kelly Swift added that development of the park isn’t in the five-year plan and that it’s difficult to say when it will be. Once council decides to proceed however, a master plan is first devised then that plan is implemented in different phases over time. “It’s kind of typical that it takes awhile to work into the plan,” said Bruce McLeod, parks planning manager. It will also take awhile to accumulate the funds in the park budget to allow the extensive work that would be needed to turn the property into a public park. Until then, the old farm is off limits. “We’re not really encouraging people to access the site.”

More homes slated for former gravel pit One of the last open spaces along Jackson Road will be filled with 60 more homes, if Maple Ridge council OKs a density-bonusing proposal by Morningstar Homes. The plan presented to the committee of the whole Monday calls for lots of 371 sq. metres

instead of the normal suburban lot of 557 sq. metres. That will result in another 12 lots being designed into the area that used to be the former Allard gravel pit. Under a density-bonusing plan approved last year by council, developers in the Albion

area can build projects at the next highest level of density, in return for paying $3,100 for each lot, adding up to about $155,000. Money from those levies will go into a fund to pay for parks and trails or possibly community centres in the Albion area.

Athletic pride Before Victoria’s Jamie Benn played for Team Canada in Russia, he played hockey at the 2004 B.C. Winter Games. And more than a decade before speed skater Denny Morrison captured gold and silver medals at the Turin, Vancouver and Sochi Olympics, he raced at the B.C. Winter Games. Hundreds of B.C. athletes are following in the footsteps of many Olympians before them, taking part in the biannual showcase of young athletic talent this weekend in Mission. For some, this will be another exciting opportunity for them to compete in their sport alongside some of the best up-and-coming athletes B.C. has to offer. For others, this will be their first taste of competition on such a large scale. Young athletes in the Lower Mainland are lucky to have an abundance of sporting opportunities, with teams and leagues available nearby that span all ages and skill levels. It’s a different story in our province’s small towns, where sports are less accessible, given there are fewer nearby competitors and athletes must travel greater distances to compete. As British Columbians, we are proud that an opportunity such as the B.C. Games exists for young athletes to experience that large-scale competition atmosphere. Without these opportunities, we risk kids losing interest in or having to give up the sports they enjoy playing. With a significant list of Olympic alumni, the B.C. Games has become a traditional stop on the path to bigger games for young athletes. As our nation’s homegrown talent competes on the world stage in Russia this final weekend, they will no doubt inspire many young athletes at the B.C. Games to dig a little deeper and come up with their best efforts. lthough I’ve always thought of myself as a conservator, I am happy to not be labeled an environmentalist, ecologist, tree-hugger or any of the other duplicitous categories that have become so popular with professional protesters. Nor do I mind if we have properly designed and constructed pipelines bringing raw or refined petroleum products from far flung areas to be processed in a safe manner locally or safely exported from coastal ports to other countries. I think it’s hilarious to observe all the protesters who object to pipelines and the petroleum industry, in general, arriving at their predetermined opposition rallies in their petroleum powered vehicles. I don’t like the price at the pumps for gas or diesel, but I’m sure happy that they are available in such quantity. However; it annoys me that we have so much un-

tapped petroleum reserves that remain in the ground because of the pipeline protests and the cynical manner in which some of these protests are funded. I grew up in a resort-based era of our history and always looked upon forestry and logging as the backbone of our economy. I even worked in a few sawmills, logging camps and the old Hammond Cedar shingle mill, which created many jobs while processing old growth cedar. I didn’t feel guilty about it then, nor now. The forest industry has slipped a notch or two on the scale of importance for our economic well being, but it remains important to every British Columbian, especially for the production of all the placards carried by those professional protesters who object to the harvesting of even a single tree. Least of all do I object to reasonable development of so-called agricultural land for non-farm purposes. The folks who oppose development on what they see as prime agricultural land must really like higher taxes and fewer local jobs because, whether we like it or not, most industrial development takes place on former agricultural land. Pitt Meadows is an excellent example of how that works for industrial or commercial development. Then we have the pseudo-scientific protesters who don’t like messing with Mother Nature, as in genetically modified foods. These are probably the goofiest of all protesters to understand, but I’m not sure they even understand themselves. Man has been messing with the natural

process of evolution for animals and food crops for centuries. But only recently have we been informed by these pseudo-scientists of the dangers of mucking around with the natural process. Wheat, still one of Canada’s most important crops, wouldn’t grow profitably in the true north strong and free until they messed around by mixing different varieties. It seems no harm has been done to Mother Nature because of this messing around.

It’s the same crowd that appears at economic summits and other initiatives of those people in society who work hard for a living and seek to make a profit. “We’re just exploring our options. If we were to do something different there, it would take some time,” Andersen said Wednesday. The company, though, is cleaning up the eightacre property, which still has equipment on it and could be used this summer for loading timber from barges for further sorting before shipping to mills along the Fraser River. Cancer claims Lordco co-founder The founder of an auto parts network that spans the province died of cancer on Monday at age 65. Ed Coates was half of the partnership formed in 1974 Coates when he and Ray Lord opened their first 900-sq.-ft store in Maple Ridge. Their philosophy was built on a common-sense approach, according to their website. “Knowledgeable salespeople selling quality merchandise, backed by a commitment to service wouldn’t create instant success, but would give them a fighting chance to make it in the long run.” Coates later bought out

his partner in the early 1980s and started expansion of the Lordco chain, first to Agassiz in 1984, then Port Coquitlam in 1985 and Abbotsford and Hope in 1987. The company’s head office remains in Maple Ridge. “As the economy recovered, Lordco parts were in high demand. Expansion was no longer a possibility but a requirement to meet the needs of its customers.” There are now 97 Lordco locations throughout B.C. and the chain is the largest privately held auto parts distributor in Canada. A news release from his wife Marlyn said Coates

Dealing with bullying Last year for Pink Shirt Day, Jessica Jacob of Meadowridge School organized a conference about bullying. The Grade 11 student is doing it again this year, but with less emphasis on the guest speakers, and more on those who take part. Last year, she said the 75 kids who were in the conference surprised her with their candor. “I really didn’t know how it would go,” she admits. But as she listened to her peers, she heard valid points – a frank discussion of issues and personal experiences shared. “I found it very inspiring and hopeful.” This year, has two speakers lined up to frame the discussion. Dave Jonsson is a plane crash survivor with “a really inspiring life story.”

Marcia Harrison, the Kids Help Phone regional director for B.C. and the Yukon, will be back again after helping to kick off last year’s event. After the speakers, she will break the crowd into smaller discussion groups. “My goal is to have students come to the school and it be a discussion forum,” said Jacob. “I want to have students share their experiences, and have a safe place to talk with others.” She sees more people becoming aware of bullying issues, but said parents still need to learn about the harassment their children can face online. Eventually, she hopes people will be more conscious of their behaviour and how it affects others, rather than focusing on bullying just during Pink Shirt Day. • The event will be held on March 7, at the school at 12224 – 240 Street, Maple Ridge.

Stylish, driver-focused, two-seat hatchback Honda CR-Z 2011 to 2013: Honda introduced the world’s first hot-hybrid-hatch with the launch of its CR-Z for the 2011 model year. The CR-Z is a stylish, driver-focused, small two-seat hatchback that’s fun-to-drive, and it offers great fuel economy. It’s a contemporary take on an older (last sold in 1991) and much loved pocket-rocket called the Honda CRX, Reliability has been outstanding and the CR-Z’s resale value on the used market is above average, a nice bonus for owners. It is based on a chassis shared with the Honda Fit, an undeniably more practical (with seats for four to five) vehicle option that lacks the style and sporty appeal of the CR-Z. Under its wedge-like aerodynamic design is a lightweight yet rigid structure. Its tapering roofline leads to an abrupt tail end with a double-window rear hatch. While the secondary lower glass panel does provide a driver some addition rear vision, overall rearward sightlines are still a drawback. The suspension is also on the firm side and combined with its short wheelbase uneven road surfaces can make the ride choppy. The sport theme continues on the inside with bucket-style seats that offer more side support on both the seatback and cushion. It also comes with large storage bins in the rear (instead of seats) that are covered by a drop-down cargo area divider when expanded trunk space is needed. Under hood, there is a 1.5-litre i-VTEC four-cylinder gas engine that’s teamed with Honda’s compact (10-kilowatt) Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system to provide a maximum of 122 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. It’s essentially the same (mild-hybrid) drive system that’s also used in the Honda Insight and Honda Civic Hybrid. City/ highway fuel economy (with auto) is rated at 5.6/5.0 L/100km. The CR-Z, however, does offer two unique hybrid-drive differences. A six-speed manual transmission option being the first and a three-mode operational feature, which allows a driver to choose between Sport, Normal or Econ (Economy) driving styles, the second. The automatic option is a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters that provide seven-speed sequential gear-ratio control. The sport mode has to be selected to use the paddle shifters, but it’s an impressively quick acting feature that’s fun to use. The Econ mode “smooths” throttle inputs but will still kick down the transmission and give full throttle if the driver floors the gas pedal. It also dampens steering response, air conditioning use and activates the idle stop/ start feature sooner, which is a big fuel saver in stop-andgo city driving. Normal mode is a middle-blend of the Sport and Econ modes. The rear axle size has been increased to handle the larger torque output from the engine. The Silverado offers three engine choices. The first is a 4.3L V6 with a 285 horsepower and 305 foot pounds of torque. There is also an all-aluminum 5.3L V8 with 355 horsepower and a 6.2L EcoTec V8 that produces 420 horsepower and 450 foot pounds of torque. This engine also has active noise cancellation, similar to good quality headphones. The transmission is a six-speed electronically controlled automatic with two overdrive gears. It has an estimated combined fuel economy of 13/8.7 L/100 km. Although my real world numbers were not that close, the transmission undoubtedly helped push a tank of gas a little farther than I expected. Properly equipped, this Silverado can tow up to 5,216 kg (11,500 lb), which is impressive for a half-ton pickup. The redesigned interior offers more leg room and is easily accessed through the larger doors. Stain resistant cloth seats or optional leather seats are very comfortable. The glove box is a two-piece design and the centre console has plenty of room. The steering wheel controls and other knobs on the dash are within reachable distance from the driver and larger enough that they can be used while wearing work gloves. My tester was equipped with Mylink system that basically controls everything. The voice recognition is easy to use and can respond to normal speech patterns. Bluetooth capabilities allow easy pairing of any smart phone with very little effort and accessing your music is a breeze. The rear bumper has steps built into it on both corners of the truck, making the job of climbing in the back an easy task. The tailgate features EZ-lift hardware that makes lowering the tailgate a one handed job. An available LED lights mounted under the box rails lights up the cargo area and makes every nook and cranny visible. Many innovative improvements were made to this truck to keep up with the consumer demands and the result will help spur Canadian sales. ian.harwood@ drivewaybc.ca

Five fun cars for singles under $30,000 By Alexandra Straub

es, you can buy fun cars for under $30,000. A few weeks ago, I recommended five fun coupes, whose base prices didn’t start with a three. Readers demanded more, so here are five more cars that are a little easier on the wallet in purchase and operation. Disclaimer, you don’t have to be single and willing to mingle to fall in love with these vehicles. In fact, some of them are family friendly. No really, they are. • Ford Focus ST, $29,999: Hot hatch? I think so. Ford’s Focus ST (sports technologies) is quite the exciting ride. As soon as you sit inside the Ford Focus ST cabin, you’re embraced by Recaro sport seats that hug you and don’t let go. There’s a six-speed manual gearbox that’s then connected to a 2.0L high-output EcoBoost I-4 engine. The high-output engine puts out 252 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Yes, that’s a herd of horses under the hood, but driving this sport-tuned version is actually quite agreeable in the city. • Chevrolet Sonic RS, $23,995: The Sonic RS Hatchback might not be the first choice of “performance” vehicle on your list, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be added. This five-door has some cool features: a unique RS liftgate-mounted rear spoiler; 17-inch midnight-silver-painted aluminum wheels; lane departure warning; leather-wrapped steering wheel with contrasting stitching and flat-bottom design; and leather-appointed seating

surfaces with ‘sueded’ microfibre inserts. That’s on top of seating for five and a powerplant comprised of a 1.4L, turbocharged 4-cylinder with 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. • Fiat 500 Abarth – $20,995: Anytime you see a scorpion on something – or in real life – you can count on there being some sort of sting. The Fiat 500 Abarth is no different, except this sting makes you smile. This pint-sized two-door might look somewhat cutesy, but the terrestrial arachnid badging denotes otherwise. Turn the ignition on and the rumble of the dual exhaust comes to life. It’s anything but tame in tone. Put the five-speed, heavy duty manual transmission into gear and hopefully you’ll be able to make good use of the 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. That’s the kind of power being generated from its 1.4L, MultiAir turbocharged engine. Along with a performance tuned-suspension, performance brakes and 16-inch wheels, this Fiat might be small, but makes up any “size matters” issues with its dynamic performance.

Window coverings make or break room

f you’re looking to add panache to your home, window coverings should be right at the top of the to-do list.

Stylicious interior designer Tammy Haywood suggests installing a simple shade.

Window coverings have the potential to really make or break the ambiance, comfort, warmth and personality of a room or a whole house, says Doris Gagel, of Gagel’s Custom Draperies. There are endless options available, she adds, and what you choose can really say a lot about you, your style and your personality. So it goes without saying that the wide variety of personalities out there means window covering styles are all over the map right now. Tammy Haywood, owner of the Pitt Meadowsbased interior design company, Stylicious, says, “The trends in window coverings today are much like the trends in everything else ... lots of contrasts.” Haywood says sleek, minimalist looks are very in, but there’s also lots of demand for the more traditional looks. Functionality is big, simplicity is key for many people, and neutrals are very popular. That said, big floral prints on draperies are gaining ground again, and jewel tones like emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby red and amethyst purple are very hot. Again, lots of personalities to cover, with lots of options to be had. Gagel has noted of late that the cycle is swinging back towards draperies after many years when blinds almost completely dominated the market. “For a long time it was almost all blinds, but we’re starting to see more interest in draperies again as people want to add more excitement and colour to their rooms,” says Gagel, who has seen all the trends come and go over the past 35 years that she’s operated her company. That said, blinds are still very popular, especially in the wood and faux wood materials. Roller shades are in high demand, as well, but pleated shades and vertical blinds aren’t nearly as sought after as they once were. For instance, where once sliding glass doors were almost exclusively the domain of vertical blinds, today you’re just as likely to see draperies, says Gagel. As one might expect, age is certainly a factor

in what people are choosing, she notes. Younger people tend to opt for more modern looks, while older individuals are more inclined to go the more traditional route. Haywood offers the following questions to ask yourself when considering window treatments: • Function – is it needed for privacy, to control light, assist with energy efficiency, or aesthetics? • What is the budget? • Is it for you or for resale? • What look or materials are you drawn to? • Are you trying to hide your window casings or show them off? Once you’ve answered these questions, you’re ready to shop. “Window coverings can be expensive,” says Haywood, “so when picking more expensive or luxurious products it is great to keep this in mind. Keeping windows neutral will allow you to change paint colors or furnishings in the future without necessarily needing to change out window coverings as well. Neutrals are also better for resale. Builders, flippers and owners who may be looking at selling should take this into consideration.” Both Haywood and Gagel agree motorized automation is very big right now with those who can afford it, especially in homes where large, tall windows make opening and closing window coverings easily by hand rather impractical. The also agree that print draperies are a great way to bring a room together. “To create harmony, choose a pattern with several of your colors from the room,” says the Pitt Meadows interior designer. “Instantly you create a look of intention. The Maple Ridge Ramblers took on the top-ranked triple A team in the province on Wednesday night in playoff basketball action, but lost to the Abbotsford Panthers 66-45. “They’re a pretty good team. They’re number one, and they look like it,” said coach Ken Dockendorf. Isaac Halas was the top scorer with 17 points, Ethan Coumont had 13 under tight checking by Abby, and starters Jackson Murdock, Rav Rakhra and Owen Stewart played tough defence. Abby had gone off for 112 points the night before against Rick Hansen, so Dockendorf was pleased with his team’s hard work against a high powered offence. The loss ended a fivegame winning streak for the Ramblers. They had won four straight in Fraser Valley East league play, and then won their first game of the playoffs on Tuesday night, when they easily handled Langley 64-37. “That was a big win, because we had lost to them before,” said Dockendorf. “They have started to realize that the season is nearing an end,

and they had to work together and play their roles.” Because of that opening-round win, they played for third/ fourth place in the East on Thursday evening against the Brookswood Bobcats, and will enter the Fraser Valley tournament with a top-half seeding. The Samuel Robertson Technical Titans lost 53-38 against Brookswood on Tuesday night, then beat the Mission Roadrunners 57-52 on Wednesday. SRT was to face Hansen in the fifth/sixth game last night. Eight of the 10 teams it the East made the Fraser Valley Tournament, and under this year’s format, all eight will make the Fraser Valley Tournament. They are just playing for seeding. Then, four teams from the Fraser Valley Tournament will go on to the provincial championships, to be played March 12-15 at the Langley Events Centre. Dockendorf said the Ramblers have a shot at making the provincials this year. “Defence is our strength, which is why we’re going on a bit of a run,” he said. “We’re in the hunt, and we have to continue to play well.”

March Madness will be a little crazier this basketball season. More teams and more kids are involved in playoff basketball in B.C. this year. Maple Ridge Ramblers head coach Ken Dockendorf is one of the main architects behind the new format that has seen the AAAA division added for the first time this season. He and Paul Eberhardt, another veteran of the B.C. high school basketball hoops wars, headed a committee that restructured the system. Not out to reinvent the wheel, they admittedly borrowed heavily from the model used in Washington State high school basketball. The new system balances out the divisions of teams in the province. There had been about 55 single-A teams, 75 double-A teams, and there was a huge 105 triple-A division. “There were way too many schools competing for a limited number of berths,” said Dockendorf. Playoff intensity The Ridge Meadows Flames lost the first two games of their best-of-seven Junior B playoff series with the Abbotsford Pilots. The Pilots won the first game 4-3 in overtime on Tuesday in Abbotsford, then on Wednesday defeated the Flames 6-2 at Planet Ice in Albion. Tonight they are back in Abbotsford, and Game 4 will be back in Maple Ridge on Saturday at 7:45 p.m.

With smaller high schools forced to compete against the largest in the province, their chances of winning a championship dwindled to those rare, outlier seasons when the stars aligned perfectly in their favor. “The bigger schools were starting to dominate more and more,” he said. “We were reaching a point where we were saying ‘we can’t honestly compete.’” The new system has teams divided almost equally, with about 67 schools in each of the four divisions. To provide some stability, the schools are committed to their division for two-year periods, and then there can be realignment. With an extra Fraser Valley tournament title to compete for, teams like Samuel Robertson Technical are enjoying a good run of playoff basketball this season. “There are a lot of teams in triple A that are still playing, whose seasons would otherwise be over,” said Dockdorf.

MCGREGOR, LEONARD RAYMOND JUNE 3, 1931 – FEBRUARY 14, 2014 It is with extreme sadness and a heavy heart that the family of Leonard Raymond McGregor announce his passing. He leaves to mourn his two daughters; Colleen (Al) and Sandra (Eric) and his 3 grandchildren; Amanda, Devon and Ryan along with several nieces and nephews. He left us on Valentine’s Day to be reunited with his sweetheart, wife and soul mate of more than 60 years, Norma who passed away in 2012. Len is predeceased by his parents, Josiah and Florence and his brother, Marvin. Len was born into one of the original settling families in Ruskin (1884). Len spent his whole life in the creative arts industry. First as a budding entrepreneur selling his own photographs starting around the age of 16. His career eventually led him to Artray Ltd. Film Productions and KVOS TV in the early days where he was the animation photographer and worked on such things as the animated cartoon of The Beetles. While holding these jobs he also continued working for himself taking portraits, weddings and industrial photographs. Even before he married Norma, she was recruited to help with the weddings and a life long bond was formed. Married in 1956, they worked side by side as a team until Norma’s passing. A master of the photographic arts, Len achieved many milestones in his career. He joined the Professional Photographers Association and quickly became the chairman for the BC Division (PPABC) for 4 ½ years, then vice chairman for the Professional Photographers Association of Canada (PPOC) representing BC for 9 years and remained an active member for the rest of his life. He also received an honourable life membership from both Professional Photographers Association of Canada and the Professional Photographers Association of America. Lens major accomplishments and accolades are too numerous to name. From citations and merits to highly awarded photographs and unique awards that can be very hard to obtain, Lens work will be on display around the world for years to come. The Photographic industry was very good to Len and he gave back to the new photographers with his knowledge, advice, support and wisdom. Kennedy of Pitt Meadows, BC. Also predeceased by 2 brothers and 4 sisters. He is survived by his sister, Jean Robertson (Pitt Meadows), sister-in-law Betty Kennedy (Salmon Arm), and 17 nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her father John in 1987, brother Timothy in 1988 and her mother Vivienne in 2002. She is survived by her two sons Kyle (Charlotte) and Craig (Jessica) and grandchildren Cameron and Brayden. Louella was a warm and caring soul who put her needs before others. She will be dearly missed by her family and her many friends who stayed by her side to the very end. Special thanks to the nurses in the Palliative Care Unit at Abbotsford Hospital for their kindness and compassion. She attended school at Verwood in Assiniboia and Regina, then in 1968 moved to Port Coquitlam, married and had two sons. Bev also lived in Kelowna, then relocated to Maple Ridge, where she made many friends, in particular those at the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada Club where she enjoyed many hours and loved to go for the meat draws. Bev was most passionate about family and friends, cooking, music and gardening. She also enjoyed writing and seeking a good bargain. She will be dearly missed by all. MORRISON, Patricia Ann Patricia Ann Morrison of Maple Ridge, British Columbia passed away surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer on February 16, 2014. She is survived by her sister Fay, children Rod and Jeff, Sherry and Al. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Kate, Greg, Liam, Tanis and nieces and nephews primarily from the Maple Ridge area. She was predeceased by her Mum and Dad and sisters Norma and Gail. Patricia “Patti” worked for Canada Safeway for approximately 20 years before retiring and was actively involved with the Golden Ears Curling Club for many years. She enjoyed her time with family and friends and her passion for playing cards. She will be greatly missed, but as she loved to say, “it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere”!

MACHMER - Marnie Marnie Machmer of Maple Ridge passed away suddenly on February 16, 2014 at the age of 66. Marnie is survived by her loving spouse Dick Huber & daughter Tracey (John) O’Grady. She is the eldest sibling of Deanna (Vince) Astoria, Ed (d. Janice) Burtnyk and Cheri (Fred) Harty. Marnie was a beautiful, generous and caring person that loved to cook and bake for her friends and family. She also loved shopping, slot machines, playing bingo and spending time in Palm Springs!
