Four young women from Victoria will roll through the B.C. Winter Games this weekend – literally. Athletes Ashley Griffith, Alyshia Joinson, Kelly Law and Ryleigh Bissenden, who all play out of the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence, make up two-thirds of the wheelchair basketball team that will represent Vancouver Island-Central Coast at the Games in Mission, which opened yesterday (Feb. 20) and run until Sunday. At PISE Tuesday night, coach Simon Cass put the foursome through a couple
of games of knockout, and had them thundering up and down the gym floor practising off-hand dribbling as the players warmed up for their final practice befprovincial competition. “So many of our players are really new. So (the B.C. Games are) a really great development opportunity, in basketball skills and meeting other people their age with different disabilities,” Cass said. Griffith, who at 14 is the youngest member of the foursome, is also the newest team member to the sport, with just two months’ experience. Griffith suffered multiple severe injuries in a fall in 2011. The Reynolds secondary student has endured
Wheelchair sports about competition, camaraderie at B.C. Winter Games two major spinal surgeries and discovered wheelchair basketball during rehab. “I just got out of GF Strong (Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver) and they have wheelchair sports there once a week,” she said. “When I got hurt, I didn’t have a way to exercise. (Wheelchair basketball) is a great activity.” Now living with complex chronic pain and confined to the chair, she finds the activity and socialization inspiring. She looks forward to “meeting other teenagers in chairs” at the B.C. Games.

Thrill-seekers can zip over the heads of shoppers at Uptown next month. The centre will build a double zipline to carry thrill-seekers 90 metres, from Uptown’s upper level to the edge of the centre plaza. “We are so thrilled to be bringing the Island’s first urban ziplining experience to our community,” said Roberta Ferguson, Uptown general manager. “It will be similar to Vancouver’s zipline from the Olympic Games in 2010.” Kristy Lowes, marketing director for Uptown, said Adrena LINE Zipline Adventure Tours in Sooke approached them last year with the concept, and now the “ducks are in a row” for the spring event. “There isn’t a lot that we’ve noticed going on in the city (over spring break). We wanted to provide some family activities that are local and different,” Lowes said. “We do like to be unique.” Adrena LINE will construct a tower on the top level of Uptown, near Blanshard Street, and connect the lines to another tower next to Uptown Boulevard. Construction will begin early next month, with the opening planned for March 7. The line will be open daily from 1 to 7 p.m. until March 23. Cost will be $10, with half going to a yet-to-be-determined local charity. Visit shopuptown.ca for more details. reporter@saanichnews.com

Pole fault
12-year-old girl struck by falling road sign told Saanich isn’t liable because crews didn’t know pole was damaged Kyle Slavin News staff
Emma Ingram is getting used to daily headaches and difficulties concentrating in class. Four weeks ago the 12-year-old Cedar Hill middle school student suffered a concussion after being hit in the head by a falling metal pole on the sidewalk in front of the school. The heavy pole – a Saanich-owned road sign that indicates to drivers that the surrounding area is for parallel parking only – struck her on the right side of her forehead, knocking her to the ground. “I fell backwards onto my backpack. Two boys that I was walking with put the pole onto the side of the sidewalk so nobody would trip on it, then they ran into the school to get help,” Ingram recalled. “Some Grade 8s came up and were saying things like, ‘How many fingers am I holding up?’ until the secretary came.” Laurie Simard, Ingram’s mom, picked her daughter up and took her to a clinic, where the doctor said Emma had been concussed With the assistance of a lawyer, Simard submitted a personal injury claim with the District of Saanich notifying them of her daughter’s injuries, eight days after the Jan. 21 incident. The following day she received a letter from Scott Broughton, Saanich’s manager of risk management, saying the municipality was not liable. He advised Simard that public works crews inspected the sign on Jan. 22, after being notified of the incident by school staff, and saw it was damaged.
Kyle Slavin/News staff
Emma Ingram, 12, stands with her mother Laurie Simard beside a pole in front of Cedar Hill middle school. The ‘parallel parking only’ sign fell on Jan. 21 and hit Ingram in the head while she was walking on the sidewalk along Cedar Hill Road. “The sign was bent and the threads at the base of the pole were damaged,” he wrote. “It is believed that the sign may have been previously knocked to the ground within a couple days prior to Jan. 21, 2014. … It is suspected that a passerby may have attempted to re-erect the pole, however it would be impossible to achieve a solid installation without the proper tools, and particularly since the threads had been damaged. The pole therefore would have been very unstable, and was most likely balancing precariously.” He said Saanich is not liable because the municipality did not know the sign was a hazard, and therefore did not act in a negligent manner. “If we ought to have known it was in that kind of condition and failed to act (then Saanich could be liable), but there was no way to know it was in that kind of condition,” he explained to the News. “If something fell on somebody’s head in my house or my yard, I’d be responsible for that, whether (the condition of that object) was reported or not,” Simard said, adding she was “flabbergasted” by the response. Broughton wrote that it is Saanich
policy that staff does not conduct “formal periodic inspections” of the tens of thousands of municipal signs – from parking signs to stop signs – unless “defects or hazards” are brought to the attention of municipal staff. “(In) this instance no prior complaint was received. As the District has complied with its policy, no liability can be imposed,” he wrote. Irene Ives, vice-principal of Cedar Hill middle school, says that very same pole – which stands nearly three metres tall – has fallen before and Saanich was made aware of it at the time. “This pole in particular last year had been compromised in some way, and during a school run in the community somebody that ran past it brushed it with their shoulder. The pole crashed over and landed on somebody’s car,” she said. Ives recalls school staff notified Saanich of the pole’s condition when that incident occurred. “Student safety is always our primary concern, even if it’s outside school hours and not (directly) on school property,” she said. Broughton said he “wasn’t aware” of the incident involving the car. He said crews properly rethreaded the sign in question after the Jan. 21 incident,
putting it “back to pre-accident condition” using a pipe wrench. Earlier this week, as Ingram and Simard stood beside the pole for a photo, the Grade 7 student demonstrated that the pole was still insecure by spinning it back and forth in its threaded sleeve. Simard says she wants to see Saanich change its policy, or at least better fasten the poles in the ground in areas where people are prone to walk. “This is where students get dropped off – it’s dangerous,” she said. “I’m worried somebody else will get hurt. It’s a poor design, especially for in front of a busy school.” Broughton says Good Samaritans should never attempt to reinstall a fallen sign. Instead, call Saanich public works at 250475-5599 or 250-475-6190. While Ingram ultimately missed two full weeks of school, and could only tolerate half-days her first week back, she says her head is slowly feeling better. “I go for drinks of water regularly because I get headaches and I’m light sensitive,” she said. “It hit me on the front of the head and fell off right away. But if it had hit to the centre of my head I could’ve been paralyzed.” editor@saanichnews.com

It’s a philosophy she shares with teammate Alyshia Joinson, 17. The Spectrum community school Grade 11 student started playing in October after her congenital spina bifida and a foot injury a year earlier claimed her ability to walk. Though Joinson still gets upright now and again at home, her days are primarily spent on wheels. “I knew I would be in a wheelchair eventually because I wasn’t supposed to walk, ever,” she said with a hint of a grin. “I have never seen anyone, besides Ashley, my age in a wheelchair. Particularly girls.” The pair will play alongside two able-bodied peers from the Capital Region. Law, the eldest member of the team at 22, will also provide the most experience of the four Victoria players. The Saanich woman discovered the sport and the wheelchair basketball program while taking post-secondary classes at PISE. The fourth member of the team, 16-yearold Bissenden of Central Saanich, similarly discovered the sport a year ago as part of her home school physical education program. “I started with a PISE program and we do a bunch of different sports,” she said. The ablebodied teen was hooked immediately. “It was fun. I loved it.” The Vancouver Island-Central Coast team of six – the remaining two members are from up-Island – will battle other co-ed teams from different regions around the province, with athletes ranging from ages 12 to 22 in four-on-four competition during the three-day B.C. Games. Despite the lack of experience, Joinson recalls an early meeting that inspired her to gear up for the Games. “We got to hold the medals,” Joinson said. “I really want one.” Visit vicnews.com and click the B.C. Games tab to learn more about athletes from across the province. reporter@saanichnews.com

OLDNEWS Week of Feb. 16 to 22
It was Feb. 20, 1989 when the Capital Regional District’s blue box recycling program rolled out in Gordon Head. The Saanich neighbourhood provided a two-week testing ground for the CRD to “iron out any initial problems” before launching region-wide on March 6, according to the Gordon Head/Saanich News. At the time, blue boxes were delivered to some 55,000 homes in Saanich, Victoria, Oak Bay and Esquimalt. The decision to keep newspaper, glass, aluminum and tin out of Hartland landfill was expected to divert some 8,500 tonnes annually from being dumped. The News article quotes thenSaanich alderman Frank Leonard, who was chairing the CRD’s environment committee, as saying the CRD’s recycling goal was “too modest,” and he wanted to see 20
per cent of the region’s garbage diverted. Since February 1989 the CRD’s blue box program has expanded, and now serves 113,000 homes in the region. The types of material that can be recycled at the curb has also increased. The most recent numbers from the CRD says 18,735 tonnes were diverted from the landfill in 2012 thanks to the blue box program. Saanich is now preparing to launch another recycling program in April, this time to divert kitchen waste from Hartland. The municipality estimates 8,000 tonnes of organics will annually avoid the dump. The CRD will implement an outright ban on depositing organic material at Hartland beginning in 2015. They estimate 30 per cent of the waste at the landfill is organics. editor@saanichnews.com

The eyes of the Capital Region are on Esquimalt this weekend, as councillors weigh a decision that will shape the outcome of the Capital Regional District’s $830-million sewage treatment project. More than 400 Greater Victoria residents packed the Esquimalt Recreation Centre gymnasium Tuesday, and again Wednesday night, to listen and offer opinion on a wastewater treatment plant slated for McLoughlin Point. The CRD needs Esquimalt to approve a rezoning bylaw to proceed with construction on the site this summer. About 40 speakers addressed council over the two evenings, and only one person spoke in support of the project Tuesday night. “Thank you for recognizing that this is a regional issue,” said Marsha Henderson, a Saanich resident, echoing praise of several speakers from outside the municipality. “Your names
“Your names will be associated with the project for good, but I applaud the courage to go against this.” - Saanich resident Marsha Henderson Speakers criticized McLoughlin Point as too small for the wastewater facility, while others said the CRD’s tsunami modelling and weather behaviour data for the site is unreliable. Others were concerned the CRD hasn’t yet provided a clear route for a sewage sludge pipeline between McLoughlin and the Hartland landfill, arguably the most disruptive feature of the overall project. Esquimalt rejected a similar application last year, but this time the CRD is offering about $13 million in mitigating features, including funding for pedestrian and

In other news this week... ■ 1993 - Resident group Citizens for Sensible Parkland argued that Saanich is unfairly distributing parkland in the municipality. Members complained Saanich wasn’t developing the land quick enough to be used by the public. ■ 1996 - Saanich council unanimously rejected a request to close off the Hamsterly Road access to the Pat Bay Highway. The request, which came in the form of a letter from a resident, said the intersection poses a risk to road users, citing “numerous accidents”. ■ 1998 - Famous Players submitted plans to Saanich planning to build a 5,580-square-metre multiplex theatre at Tillicum Centre – now known as Cineplex SilverCity Victoria. cycling pathways, roadway redevelopment and a $55,000 annual cash payment for five years. “The amenities for Esquimalt will only be achieved through this rezoning,” Mayor Barb Desjardins reminded the packed room. Some at the meeting argued all developers must provide amenities when seeking approval for a major project, and the CRD’s incentives shouldn’t be mistaken for bribery. Should council turn down the current application, the provincial government could ultimately force through the project and ignore the township’s demands. Yet some MLAs, including Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Andrew Weaver, have suggested the project’s 2018 deadline should be delayed to review newer and more efficient treatment technology. Esquimalt council will issue its judgment on Monday night (Feb. 24). dpalmer@vicnews.com

Students push for better transit argues bus-only lanes along McKenzie Avenue and Douglas Street and minor increases to gas and property taxes will result in major improvements. The Make Transit Work push came as B.C. Transit presented its 2014 budget to the Greater Victoria Transit Commission. “The Transit Commission has the ability to end bus pass-ups,” said Simka Marshall, with the CCSS. “Commission members have access to levers of power that students, community riders and bus drivers don’t. The provincial government will listen to the mayors who sit on the Transit Commission when they come knocking. They need to make better use of that influence.” To watch the videos or to learn more about the campaign, visit maketransitwork.com. editor@saanichnews.com
The University of Victoria and Camosun College student societies, along with bus drivers this week once again pushed B.C. Transit and politicians to improve bus service. “Bus pass-ups in Greater Victoria are getting worse every year,” said Rachel Barr, UVSS director of external relations. The student societies and the local bus drivers’ union (Unifor 333) make up the Make Transit Work Campaign. Through the campaign they released three new videos outlining the problems and proposed solutions. The videos featured frustrated students, municipal and provincial politicians, B.C. Transit employees, and other stakeholders who all acknowledge the failings of the current transit system. Make Transit Work

Tobacco tax jumps in balanced B.C. budget Tom Fletcher Black Press
Finance Minister Mike de Jong unveiled B.C.’s second straight surplus budget Tuesday, with few spending and tax changes as the province plans for economic growth driven by natural gas exports. The biggest tax change is that provincial tobacco tax goes up 32 cents a pack April 1, on top of the latest federal increase of 40 cents a pack. B.C.’s share is expected to generate another $50 million, and de Jong said a “significant portion” of that will be used to develop smoking prevention efforts in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society. Provincial funding for K-12 education continues at 2013 levels, as the government pursues an appeal of a court decision that could add hundreds of millions to school district costs. The budget touts investments in trade skills training, with shop projects at Camosun College, Okanagan College and NorKam Secondary in Kamloops. NDP finance critic Mike Farnworth said the government balanced its budget with cuts to skills training, increases to fees and appropriating $480 million added to BC Hydro’s growing debt. The government expects to end the current year with an operating surplus of $175 million, rising to $184 million next year, which de Jong said is mainly a result of spending discipline. Premier Christy Clark has promised to pay off B.C.’s debt through what the budget describes as a two-tier income tax on liquefied natural gas exports 1.5 per cent and up to seven per cent. LNG production companies would pay the lower rate to start, with most or all of it repaid by an investment tax credit until their capital costs have been recovered. No revenues from LNG are expected until 2017. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

From B.C. Games to Olympic dreams Before Victoria’s own Jamie Benn played for Team Canada in Russia, he played hockey at the 2004 B.C. Winter Games. And more than a decade before speed skater Denny Morrison captured gold and silver medals at the Turin, Vancouver and Sochi Olympics, he raced at the B.C. Winter Games. More than 50 Greater Victoria athletes are following in the footsteps of many B.C.-raised Olympians before them, taking part in the biannual showcase of young athletic talent. For some, this will be another exciting opportunity for them to compete in their sport alongside some of the best up-and-coming athletes B.C. has to offer. For others, this will be their first taste of competition on such a large scale. Young athletes in Victoria are lucky to have an abundance of sporting opportunities, with teams and leagues available nearby that span all ages and skill levels. It’s a different story in our province’s small towns, where sports are less accessible, given there are fewer nearby competitors and athletes must travel greater distances to compete. As British Columbians, we are proud that an opportunity such as the B.C. Games exists for young athletes to experience that largescale competition atmosphere. Without these opportunities, we risk kids losing interest in or having to give up the sports they enjoy playing. With a significant list of Olympic alumni, the B.C. Games has become a traditional stop on the path to bigger games for young athletes. As our nation’s homegrown talent competes on the world stage in Russia this weekend, they will no doubt inspire many young athletes at the B.C. Games to dig a little deeper and come up with their best efforts. Whether it’s Morrison, from Fort St. John, standing on the podium in Sochi, or the promise of a medal from Benn and his four B.C.-reared teammates on Team Canada, we as British Columbians take pride in our athletes’ Olympic successes. Providing kids with sport-related opportunities like the B.C. Games is critical – it’s the best way to show our support for tomorrow’s Olympians today.

Postal service needs improvements Re: Canada Post’s problems deeper than funding woes (Letters, Jan. 29) I agree with Doreen Marion Gee that delivery problems are a serious issue at Canada Post not only in Victoria, but across this country. It seems Canada Post management deliberately set up the Crown corporation to fail, to justify eventually privatizing it. They are more concerned with profits than quality service, having moved processing of all Island mail to Vancouver last year. Canada Post made $94 million in 2012 despite the Conference Board of Canada’s projection of a net loss of almost $250 million by the end of 2012. Incidentally, Canada Post is relying on the Conference Board report to justify the drastic cuts now. Since 1995, Canada Post has paid more than $1.5 billion to the federal government in the form of dividends and income taxes. I feel we were fed misinformation and excuses to justify these drastic cuts. I have seen it take up to a week to receive a letter mailed in Greater Victoria. Can you imagine how long a letter must take to be delivered within Salt Spring Island with four ferry trips involved? This slow erosion of service is further driving customers to find alternative delivery options. This poor delivery standard must surely impact small businesses that rely on mail and bill payments to manage their business. Raising the price of a

single stamp to one dollar will only compound this situation. Eliminating door-to-door service will not improve delivery. It will create new problems, such as theft, litter, traffic, devaluation of property values and increased municipal taxes to cover policing and planning. There are better ways to fix problems. Canada Post can increase services to the public like postal administrations do in other countries with the concept of postal banking. Canada Post had a five-year plan which cost $2 billion to implement and was supposed to lower the cost of delivery. By dramatically raising postage rates and reducing service, they are destroying the business and taking away a good service to the customer. They are also wasting their investment in modernization, which was to deal with the gradual decrease in letters. We need improvements, not cuts. Janet Barney, president Victoria Local 850, CUPW
Amalgamation would solve woes of the tradespeople Amalgamation is a word that seems to be either sung like a bird or hissed like a snake, depending on the tongue from which it spoken. to deal with a new municipality, I get discouraged because of the inconsistencies between each one. A great example is the application of rainscreen to new construction and renovations. In Saanich you are required to rainscreen, in Oak Bay you are not. How can you cross a street and have such different construction requirements? Another example is the manner in which you book inspections. Saanich has a great system where you call in and book an inspection with the clerk, then the inspector calls you the morning of the inspection with a one-hour window. Victoria, on the other hand, has a number that you call, and nine times out of 10 you get an answering machine telling you that you cannot book an inspection by leaving a message. You have to keep calling until you get the clerk and are then issued a two-hour window. In the building trades we have a great word: typical. It means you know what to expect – the exact opposite of what you get each time you have to deal with a different municipality in Greater Victoria. We may not be ready for a full amalgamation, but I suggest and support that we start with the building trades to create some uniformity to the Capital Region. Special Olympics Victoria is looking for a volunteer co-ordinator. The two-year commitment requires roughly 20 hours of work per month from September to June. Special Olympics Victoria and its 150 volunteers help 250 athletes participate in 19 sports over all seasons. “It’s a high level of commitment, high engagement in the community. It’s hands on … you guide people on the board and you also get involved in the doing,” said Chantal Brodeur, the current volunteer co-ordinator. “It’s a lot of troubleshooting.” The organization is looking for local co-ordinator who has experience with youth and adults with intellectual disabilities, experience in a leadership or management, and an understanding of the not-for-profit culture. “The local co-ordinator is the person that oversees the operation of Special Olympics Victoria; the chair of the board or you could compare it to the CEO of an organization,” Brodeur said. “Also it’s a great opportunity to put your own skills to work … to shape an organization, make it grow. It’s a great place if you like a diversity of tasks, and work with a diversity of people. It’s infused with diversity.” The athletes and volunteers hail from all over Greater Victoria, but Brodeur feels this position offers an opportunity to engage with even more athletes in the region. “The organization needs to grow as far as capacity,” she said. “The organization has grown significantly. I was able to be part of that … now I think it’s time for someone else, new energy, so we can continue to grow.” Visit victoriaspecialolympics.com for more on the program. To apply for the position, email Margot Tubman, co-ordinator of volunteers, at specialo.mtubman@gmail.com. reporter@saanichnews.com
Do you want to maintain your eyesight? Protect yourself against cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. The leading cause of blindness in older people is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which results in the loss of central vision and the ability to see fine details. AMD is primarily triggered by a lifetime of free-radical damage, so the best way to protect your eyes is to make sure they have an abundant supply of targeted antioxidants. Cataracts are another common problem associated with aging. More than half of all North Americans in their 80s either have cataracts or have had surgery to replace the clouded lens. Not surprisingly, the same nutrients that protect against AMD have also been shown to help stave off cataracts. NEW Vision Essentials with lutein, beta-carotene, ginkgo biloba, lycopene, black currant and 10 other nutrients helps reduce the risk of developing cataracts and helps to maintain eyesight in conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

ast September, Trevor Kidd found himself in a studio in Toronto jamming with guys from the punk rock band Billy Talent. It’s a scene aspiring musicians daydream about, but the humble 18-year-old Langford musician just took it all in. He had landed amid rock stars as the culmination of events that began with him writing a song, his first song, Little Dreamer. Through his teens, Kidd had been the bassist in a number of potentially successful bands, one of which appeared on Dragons’ Den, and another that produced an album and lined up a Canadian tour, but the band imploded. Frustrated, he went solo, put down the bass and started writing and singing. “I had planned to leave high school early, but had a bad start. The band fell apart. It was devastating,” he said. “That happens in this business.” Kidd penned Little Dreamer in September 2012, recorded an acoustic version in Langford with local musician Ken Mason, and uploaded it to YouTube. The message of the song was plucked from his own life. “Initially the song was about a promising success that fell apart,” he said. “but
it’s a song for any kid about persevering as a musician. It’s about not giving up even though it’s a long, hard road, to keep going.” He started emailing Little Dreamer to musicians and radio stations, and caught a break four months later. Cherie Currie of the ’70s band The Runaways heard it, liked it and spread it around. Kidd then entered the song into a vote for Mount Doug’s 2013 graduating class song, where it competed against commercial hits like Phillip Phillips’s ubiquitous Home. It was no contest – his peers recognized Little Dreamer as a powerful message from one of their own, and Kidd nabbed most of the votes. At the June graduation ceremony, he was on his guitar as his song erupted from 200 classmates. “It was big, like singing with a gospel choir. That doesn’t happen everyday,” Kidd said.“It was weird. I was never a popular kid in high school. I kept to myself. It was surreal and it was flattering.” Later that year, Kidd entered his song into the songwriting contest, “My Song for Change”offered by the Make Music Matter charity. Through a concerted social media effort, he made it into the Top 10. Musicians from Billy Talent, Sum 41 and Grammy award-winning music producer David Bottrill handpicked the winner – a young musician from Langford. Kidd found out in August, and was on a plane
to Toronto on Sept. 28. “I felt so much excitement and adrenaline and worry,” he said. That afternoon he was jamming with Billy Talent, a band he first saw at age 11 in Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. “It’s was like you are jamming in a room with your friends, and you look around and see guys you watched on TV as a kid.“ At the renown Metalworks Studios, Billy Talent’s Ian D’sa and Aaron Solowoniuk, and Cone McCaslin of Sum 41 became Kidd’s one-day band, produced by Bottrill. “Having a room full of rock stars staring at you is intimidating but it worked out. The whole thing was a dream come true.” Kidd, now sporting Jim Morrisonesque locks, first picked up a guitar at age 8, but took a few years before he taught himself a few tunes, starting with Black Sabbath’s Paranoid. “It had been frustrating and made me want to give up, and that makes me want to teach kids the excitement of the guitar.” He recently landed a teaching gig at the newly formed West Shore Music Academy, and works to connect with musicians and producers. He plans to record a new album of original material, and is performing an acoustic show at The Cellar nightclub in Vancouver on March 8, four days after his 19th birthday.

The frame mounts at the back of the cab are hydraulic and this helps to control any vibration. The rear axle size is increased to handle the larger torque output from the engine. Speaking of engines the Silverado offers three engine choices. The first is a 4.3L V6 with a 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque. An all-aluminum 5.3L V8 with 355 horsepower and a 6.2L EcoTec V8 that produces 420 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. This engine also has active noise cancellation, very similar to good quality headphones. Competition is fierce in the half-ton pickup market and with heavy concentration on fuel consumption. It’s tough to find a balance between fuel economy and a strong capable truck. But the Silverado designers achieved that balance and were recognized publicly for the achievement. Fun cars for singles under 30 grand Yes, you can buy fun cars for under 30 grand. A few weeks ago, I recommended five fun coupes for singles, with base prices that didn’t start with a three. Readers demanded more so here are five more cars a little easier on the wallet in purchase and operation. Disclaimer, you don’t have to be single and willing to mingle to fall in love with these vehicles. In fact, some of them are family friendly. No really, they are. Ford Focus ST- $29,999 Hot hatch? I think so. Ford’s Focus ST (Sports Technologies) is quite the exciting ride. As soon as you sit inside the Ford Focus ST cabin, you’re embraced by Recaro sport seats that hug you and don’t let go. There’s a six-speed manual gearbox connected to a 2.0L High-Output EcoBoost I-4 engine. The high-output engine offers 252 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Yes, that’s a herd of horses under the hood, but driving this sport-tuned version of ST is actually quite agreeable in the city. Chevrolet Sonic RS $23,995 The Sonic RS Hatchback might not be the first choice of “performance” vehicle on your list, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be added. This five-door has some cool features like: a unique RS liftgate-mounted rear spoiler, 17-inch Midnight Silver painted-aluminum wheels, Lane Departure Warning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with contrast stitching and flat-bottom design, and leather-appointed seating surfaces with ‘sueded’ microfibre inserts. That’s on top of seating

for five and a powerplant comprised of a 1.4L, turbocharged 4-cylinder with 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Fiat 500 Abarth $20,995 Anytime you see a scorpion on something – or in real life – you can count on there being some sort of sting. The Fiat 500 Abarth is no different, except this sting makes you smile. This pint-sized two-door might look somewhat cutesy, but the terrestrial arachnid badging denotes otherwise. Turn the ignition on and the rumble of the dual exhaust comes to life. It’s anything but tame in tone. Put the 5-speed, heavy duty manual transmission into gear and hopefully you’ll be able to make good use of the 160 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. That’s the kind of power being generated from its 1.4L, MultiAir turbocharged engine. Along with a performance tuned-suspension, performance brakes and 16-inch wheels, this Fiat might be small, but makes up any “size matters” issues with its dynamic performance. Honda Civic SI
(Coupe/Sedan) $26,245/$26,250 Take the exceptional reliability of Honda, its popular-selling Civic coupe/ sedan, lace it with a potent engine and some cool gadgetry and you have the SI trim. Up until only a few years ago, the Civic SI was only offered in coupe format, but that changed in 2007. Those who wanted performance and practicality would be granted access to such pleasures of life. Setting it apart from its tamer siblings is a 2.4-litre engine producing 201 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. It also comes standard with 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. Not to mention a 6-speed manual transmission. Whether opting for two or four doors, you can’t go wrong. Scion FR-S - $26,450 The return of the fun-todrive rear-wheel drive sports coupe that’s priced under $30K can be linked to the Scion FR-S. You could also say it is linked with the Subaru BRZ as these four-seater, two-door vehicles were a joint venture product between the two Japanese brands. The FR-S features a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine, developed in collaboration with Subaru. It combines Subaru’s horizontally opposed engine and Toyota’s D-4S injection system. The result is 200 naturally aspirated horses and 151 lb-ft of torque and can be matched with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The back seats might not be incredibly comfortable but all the festivities are up front anyway. alexandra.straub @drivewaybc.ca

SPCA sweet on cupcakes for dogs It’s hard saying no to a begging puppy, staring into your eyes. And it’s equally difficult saying no to the smell of fresh cupcakes. The Victoria SPCA is happy to exploit the weakness of us humans by hosting its first National Cupcake Day, a fundraiser benefitting animals, on Feb. 24. Besides cupcake eaters, volunteers are needed to organize, make cupcakes for human or animal consumption, or both, and collect money, said SPCA Victoria

Winter Games curling reps have experience on their side Teen rinks set to heat up the ice Edward Hill News staff
Young curlers based at Juan de Fuca Curling Centre are eyeing gold as they represent Vancouver Island and the coast at the B.C. Winter Games in Mission this weekend. The girls, known as Team Tinkler, and the boys, Team Cassidy, will compete against B.C.’s best teen curlers in round robin play. Despite their young ages, both squads have plenty of experience in the house. This is Sydney Brilz’s second time curling at the Winter Games. The 16-year-old Belmont secondary student won silver in Vernon in 2012, just her second season in the sport. “It’s pretty competitive. It’s a different dynamic (than provincials),” she says of the Games atmosphere. “You stay in the same room as the people you are competing against. You get to know teams really good, they become good friends, but … you
RECRUITMENT
want to win. You kind of switch gears (on the ice). There’s no friendship, you just play.” The rink’s skip, Bailey Tinkler, a 17-year-old Spectrum Community School student, is also joined by Colquitz middle schooler Julia Kresse, 14, and Jordan Koster, 16, from Courtenay in representing Zone 6. Like many young curlers, Tinkler first stepped on the pebbled ice after watching her parents and siblings play. That was seven years ago. “It’s been in my family for a long time,” she says. “My brother and sister had a big influence on me and I wanted to get out there and try it. I like the strategy of the game. And you definitely learn about yourself on the ice.” Tinkler says she’s looking forward to the Games, adding it’s been a goal of hers to achieve this. “It’s exciting.” The boys rink is skipped by Ryan Cassidy, a 15 year old with seven years’ experience on the ice. He is still runner-up in terms of experience on the foursome. Alexander Horvath, 15, began pushing rocks at age 4. Both Belmont students, they
competed at junior nationals in January as part of Cameron De Jong’s 2014 B.C. junior men’s championship-winning rink. Horvath says winning the Zone 6 berth for B.C. Winter Games wasn’t tough, but they expect heavy competition for gold at the Mission Curling Club. Scott Gray and Derek Chandler, both 15, round out the team, which has been practising five days per week at Juan de Fuca. “It’s a strategic game, like chess. You have to think ahead, think about what your opponent is going to do before they do it,” Horvath says. Coach Julie Semenchuk said the boys have a good chance at the gold if they stay focused on the game, while having fun. “I make sure they are acting like a team, communicating like a team,” she says. “If they aren’t being a team, they lose bits and pieces of the game. I give them a friendly reminder to be good and to have fun.” The B.C. Winter Games run today (Feb. 21) through Sunday. Follow results at bit.ly/Mb9Zzm. editor@goldstreamgazette.com

Mystery of the Colwood soda bottle solved Amateur historian sleuths out story of a Colwood company that vanished a century ago Kyle Wells News staff
A challenge issued by the Goldstream News Gazette 36 years ago has finally been met with the unravelling of the mystery of the Colwood Hygienic Mineral Water Co. of 1911. A Gazette article from July 28, 1978 details the mystery of Colwood soda bottles discovered around that time in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island, proving the existence of a long rumoured soda company on the West Shore. At the time, researchers and collectors had been unable to find any information or further evidence of the existence of such a business and the Gazette asked readers with any information to come forward and “help solve the mystery.” “So here I am,” Bill Wilson said. But what no one could the building of the Panama Canal.
Bottle collector and amateur history detective Bill Wilson has unravelled the mystery of a Colwood soda company and answered a challenge issued by our sister paper, the Goldstream News Gazette, 36 years ago. Kyle Wells/News staff
Wilson figures it would have been around the time the bottles arrived in 1911 that one of the partners in the business, a Baker brother, died of a heart attack. His death must have spelled the end of the enterprise. With the court document in hand Wilson now knew the company existed, but the fact Baker’s will didn’t mention the company meant it must never have been built, or else it would have been listed as an asset. “The company never filled a bottle,” Wilson said. Only one mystery remained: where were they planning on building it? Frank Braine, a well-known Colwood character who died in 1958 after a life as a cowpuncher, actor and commercial fisherman, was one of the partners in the business and owned the land on which Wilson figures the plant was supposed to be built. Braine isn’t listed in any directory, but
Wilson dug up a voter’s list from 1912, which told him Braine owned Section 107. “The only question then is, where the hell is Section 107?” Wilson said. Another historian friend, Ron Greene, managed to find a 1928 map of Colwood, detailing the lots, with lot 107 shown on the edge of Mill Hill Regional Park, in what is now Langford. Looking at the map, it shows Mill Stream running through the only flat section of the property, the perfect location for a soda factory. This puts the planned, though never built, location of Colwood Hygienic Mineral Water Co. at about the location of what today is Cedar Vale Park, a small slice of nature surrounded by development. That the area is now a park is a perfect ending to the story, Wilson said. “The one place they were going to put the bottling plant is still the way it was.” kwells@goldstreamgazette.com

SELLING TIP |Create a list of questions to ask your prospective real estate agent ahead of time
Realtors offer tips on finding the right agent Ask about their marketing plan, experience selling in your area Don Descoteau News staff
Choosing to sell your home is a major life decision, one requiring plenty of forethought and planning. From there, figuring out how best to put your home in front of potential buyers is the next big challenge. The majority of homeowners turn to real estate agents to market their property. Many home sellers these days are choosing to take a more active role in finding the right agent to work with. That often includes interviewing prospective salespeople to determine who’s best suited for the job. To help make that decision, some key questions can be asked, say directors with the Victoria Real Estate Board. “Experience in the market you’re trying to sell in is probably more important than the amount of time they’ve been in the business,” says board president Tim Ayres, whose specialty is the Sooke area. “Being up on your specific market niche is key.” Asking how much business the agent is carrying – that is, how many listings – can indicate a couple of things, he says. Not only can it give a sense of the volume of potential buyers looking at their properties online and in print, it offers a clue into how much time they
have to spend directly with you, as opposed to working with assistants. “It’s a delicate balance there,” Ayres says. “Something people definitely do too much is go with the person who has the most listings.” Home sellers often ask him how he plans to market their homes and how their approach might be different than their competition. Realtor and board director Tony Wick, in his 28th year in the business, acknowledges that technology has streamlined the industry, but will tell prospective clients he still prefers to do things like present offers or counter-offers in person with his clients. He also likes to get on the phone with the purchaser’s agent to find out where they’re at. “Even as a listing agent, it’s a good idea to talk to the buyer’s agent to hear their side of the story (on price),” he says. Wick makes sure he creates a clear communication plan with clients. “It’s important for the seller to know what the agent is going to do, how they’re going to report back on showings. It’s hugely important to get that feedback, even if it’s negative feedback.” In the current market, prospective buyers are taking longer to make up
JEFF BISHOP REAL ESTATE KNOWLEDGE
If you plan to have a Realtor sell your home, sit down with prospective agents first to ensure you find someone who is the right fit for your style and expectations. Thinkstock
their minds, a point which increases the need for communication and flexibility in approach. Asking how an agent has dealt with highs and lows in the buying cycle is another good question, Wick says. Guy Crozier, a 22-year Realtor and president-elect for the board, says buyers increasingly start their home search themselves before getting involved with an agent. Sellers need to know the advantages of working with an agent – unfettered access to the Multiple Listings Service is one – to help navigate current market dynamics, he says.
“Not only do we try to understand buyers, we try and get inside the seller’s head,” Crozier says. “Then we can make really good decisions together.” In print, Real Estate Victoria, a Black Press product, has long been considered the region’s leading resource for listings and promoting open houses. Its listings are also now available through Flyerboard at vicnews.com. Homefinder, appearing in Black Press community papers, is also available to Realtors wishing to market homes for sale in specific areas of the region. Like Ayres, he says sellers should ask key questions

about marketing their home. “They need to find out how (the agent) will get your home in front of buyers, and what system they have in place to keep it there and make sure we have a smooth process,” he says. The elephant in the room may be sales commissions. With Greater Victoria agents using various formats to determine percentages, sellers need to be clear at the beginning about their expectations and inquire about any variations to that fee structure. No matter what Realtor you choose, your single biggest asset needs to be handled with care.
