Power restored by BC Hydro crews TERRACE - BC Hydro restored power to residents of Stewart, Meziadin and the Nass Valley at 3:03 p.m. Feb. 15 who had been without power for four days. A transmission tower had fallen over Feb. 11, cutting off power in the late afternoon to thousands of northwestern BC residents. Local BC Hydro crews were assisted by ones flown in from the lower mainland. Bad weather Feb. 11 initially hampered efforts to identify the problem. And bad weather also hampered attempts to fly in the crews, supplies and equipment by helicopter to the tower which was
in a remote location above Lava Lake, just south of the Nass Valley and about 70km north of Terrace. In all, nine BC Hydro employees worked to restore power. It’s still not known why the 55-foot high steel tower had toppled; the wooden replacement is 70 feet high. Crews had to blast holes into rock in order to secure the wooden tower. The outage led to schools being closed in communities. People with backup generators were able to provide power for themselves. Some communities established warming centres and orga-
nized meals. Homes with fireplaces or wood stoves fared well during the outage. A back-up generator was used to power a pump for water supply in Gingolx, and volun-
teers prepared meals for community members at the Gingolx Memorial Centre. It is not unusual to have power outages in the region but this one was longer than ones that took place in the past.

Trustee Janet Beil was uneasy with the idea of at-risk students being away from school for another lengthy period of time. “After being on this board for six years studying what happens in our area, I’m very concerned that the two week break is going to have a negative impact,” she said, explaining it would mean students who have unhealthy meal plans at home or who live in poverty would be away from their school’s nutritional food programs longer, a point trustee Barb Gruber didn’t agree was an issue considering stu-

The KSM Project – What’s required to get approval? This summer, Seabridge Gold expects to hear the decision on its environmental assessment application for the KSM Project. The proposed gold-copper-molybdenum-silver mine located 65 kilometers north of Stewart will be a large mining operation providing valuable minerals to the world, tax revenues to the province and jobs, economic growth and infrastructure development to local communities. It’s important to know the facts about how a mine is designed – and what’s required to get approval. Studying Effects on Water Quality and Fish Protecting the environment is one of Seabridge’s top priorities. Seabridge has thoroughly assessed the project and its impacts on the environment in its Environmental Assessment Application which includes topics such as potential effects to fish and aquatic habitat due to changes in water quality, including sub-lethal toxicity. Seabridge has worked with independent wildlife, fishery and engineering experts to develop a project that minimizes impacts on water, fish and the aquatic environment. Did you know that the KSM Project Environmental Assessment is available to the public online? The KSM Project EA is available online here: http:// a100.gov.bc.ca/appsdata/epic/html/deploy/epic_project_ home_322.html. Anyone can access the document to learn more. Developing a Large Mine Responsibly Some people have asked whether KSM is too big to mine safely and responsibly. The project is similar in size and scope to Teck’s Highland Valley Copper mine in Kamloops, BC. Highland Valley has been in operation since 1986, successfully produces 133,000 tons per day (tpd) and is a key economic driver in the interior of BC. It’s important to remember, producing 130,000 tpd, as would KSM, is only average in size compared to other mines around the world. There is no doubt KSM has engineering and project design challenges due to the terrain and the distance between the mine site and the processing area, which are connected by tunnels. KSM Project tunnels are similar in design to the Granduc tunnels located near Stewart, BC, which were constructed in the 1960s and are still usable today. Antofagasta’s Los Pelambres copper mine in Chile also provides a great comparison to KSM given that it’s
Brent Murphy, Seabridge’s VP Environmental Affairs, with the complete Environmental Assessment Application.
situated in a rugged highland terrain 3,600 metres above sea level and is divided into two main work sites located many kilometres apart and connected by tunnels. Los Pelambres proves KSM’s engineering and project design are manageable challenges. Approval Process Mines in Canada get approved when the benefits of a project far outweigh the risks. And mines only get built when there is a strong level of proof and certainty in the design and detailed plans are in place to manage any potential risks. KSM’s 35,000-page environmental assessment submission took five years to prepare – hundreds of people from more than 16 world-class consulting firms provided input and studies, and the design has been updated several times to reflect concerns of local citizens, including Treaty Nations and First Nations. Seabridge’s environmental assessment is under review by both the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency and the BC Environmental Assessment Office. These regulatory agencies are carefully considering the environmental impacts of KSM as well as the social and economic benefits of building a mine in northwest British Columbia. To learn more about the KSM Project visit the KSM Project website (www.ksmproject.com) or our offices in Smithers or Dease Lake, BC.

MP blasts federal budget By Shaun Thomas
The Northern connector
PRINCE RUPERT - Skeena – Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen is accusing the Conservatives of a hidden agenda when it comes to the federal budget unveiled on Feb. 11. “This budget doesn’t do a lot and I suspect that has more to do with politics than with economics. I think they are holding back big programs and announcements until 2015 because that is an election year,” he said. “We wanted a budget that was going to do something, not just push pause and wait for the next fiscal year.” Cullen said while the budget does contain a few items for the north, such as more money to bring broadband Internet into rural and remote communities, he was surprised by what wasn’t contained in the document.
The Lions chair… Contributed / the NORTHERN CONNECTOR
“I’m really shocked. This was supposed to be a budget about reaching out to the middle class and making sure people can make ends meet. The Conservatives kept dropping hints about steps to address consumer protection, but there is nothing here,” he said, listing skills training as another area he found lacking. “I thought there would be more in the budget about youth training, perhaps some sort of tax incentive ... when it comes to the skill shortage we face here in the northwest, the governanswer seems to Nathan Cullen ment’s be temporary foreign workers.” Cullen also expressed his frustration with money being included in the budget for ferries on the east coast while there was nothing for the west coast, where he said cuts “are devastating communities”.
PRINCE RUPERT - The Lions Club made a generous donation to the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital emergency room and intensive care unit when they purchased a new Bariatric Recliner (a multifunctional chair that eases the interdepartmental transport of patients as well as increases options for patients in terms of comfort levels).
“We wanted a budget that was going to do something.”

Natural gas for the pipeline will come from northeastern B.C. Both the pipeline and LNG plant have received full environmental and regulatory approval and Asian customers are now being sought. The companies, along with others interested in pipelines and plants in the northwest, are waiting for word of what kind of taxes the provincial government wants to collect. That became a bit
clearer in the Feb. 18 budget released by the provincial government. Kitselas councillor Judy Gerow, executive director of PTP ASEP Diane Collins, former Ontario NDP premier and most lately, former Liberal interim leader, Bob Rae, who is now the chairman of the board for the FN (PTP) Group Limited Partnership, and Alan Dunlop, representing Chevron, Apache and Kitimat LNG, were also on hand for the announcement at the Kitselas community hall.

TERRACE - An agency created to train aboriginal people to work on a planned natural gas pipeline to feed a liquefied natural gas plant at Kitimat has received a cash infusion from the federal government. The PTP ASEP (Pacific Trail Pipeline Aboriginal Skills Employment Partnership) Training Society had already received federal training monies to train people to work on the pipeline but that effort was delayed when anticipated construction starts for both the pipeline and accompanying LNG project, called Kitimat LNG, were put off. The new federal money, as much as $6.1 million, was announced this morning by federal employment minister Jason Kenney during a visit to Terrace. It’s to be used for broader aboriginal training for energy and other projects and not strictly limited to activity surrounding the Pacific Trail Pipeline or Kitimat LNG. PTP ASEP had already been branching out to provide general construction-related and other training. Together with private sector companies, the training society is now expected to train as many as 780 aboriginal people in such skilled trades as welding, electrical work and pipefitting. “Our government is helping aboriginal people get the skills and training they need to secure meaningful employment and build better futures for themselves and their families,” said Kenney today. The training society is made up of the 15 First Nations who live along the length of the planned Pacific Trails Pipeline, including the Kitselas First Nation just outside of Terrace. In the past it has also received financial assistance from Pacific Trails Pipeline which is owned by Chevron, Apache and the 15 First Nations who make up the training so-

PRINCE RUPERT - In recognition of the 25th anniversary of the B.C. Annual Dance Compeition, CityWest donated $5,000, which will go towards the purchase of new registration and scheduling software, which is estimated to save organizers around 100 hours of planning time. City to fine riders without helmet ing concerns raised by Coun. Barry Cunningham. “I would be pissed off if I had to pay $35 then had to go out and pay $70 or $80 for a helmet ... I would like to amend the penalties so that the first offence is $35, but if a helmet is purchased and brought in with a receipt that penalty is waved, otherwise it is really a double hit,” he said. The idea found support among council, who also recommended the money collected through fines be put aside to help purchase helmets for those who cannot afford the added expense. PRINCE RUPERT - Skateboarding, biking or rollerblading without a helmet could be a costly undertaking in the future. During its Feb. 11 meeting, Prince Rupert city council gave first three readings to a bylaw that would impose fines and the possible confiscation of equipment for people who choose not to wear a helmet on the streets and sidewalks around town. While the initial plan was to impose a $35 fine for the first offence, a $70 fine for the second offence and confiscation on the third offence, council amended those penalties follow-

or guardians who “authorizes or knowingly permits the person not to wear a helmet”. “Someone has to buy a helmet, safety has to be first. Whether the parent or child is paying, safety always has to be first,” said Mayor Jack Mussallem. “No matter what other people say, we’re not going to let you put yourself in harm’s way and we’re going to do everything we can to prevent it,” added Coun. Anna Ashley. The lone voice of opposition to the bylaw came from Coun. Gina Garon, who said she didn’t feel a simple fine had enough teeth to deter riders from forgoing a helmet.

KITIMAT - The Kitimat Hospital Foundation has been benefitting from a number of recent donations. The Kitimat Seniors Association Branch 129 recently handed over a cheque for $500 to the group. The Foundation even received a $500 from the Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary Branch 250 earlier in the month. sound machine for the Kitimat General Hospital. The Foundation says they have 60 per cent of that $50,000 goal. The Foundation says a portable ultrasound machine can avoid uneeded exploratory surgeries, and can make quicker and more accurate diagnoses. “We have a fixed ultrasound machine at the hospital,” said Foundation Chairperson Corinne Scott. “But it is not available after hours and weekends. The portable ultrasound can be operated by the doctors themselves and can be moved to where it is most needed. Fundraising has been ongoing for two months.

Skidegate Saints claim third Seniors title in nailbiter final By Shaun Thomas The Northern connector
PRINCE RUPERT - The undefeated Skidegate Saints looked to make it three straight Seniors Division championships as they tipped off against the Ahousaht Suns in the final game of the 55th Annual All Native Basketball Tournament. The Saints stifling defense kept Ahousaht to a single basket through five minutes of the first quarter while on the other side of the court they put away nine points for a strong early lead to the delight of the pro-Skidegate crowd. By the time the buzzer sounded to end the first, despite back-to-back three pointers by Ahousaht’s Greg Charlie, the Saints retained a 19-10 lead. In the second, the Suns began chipping away at that lead and were only down five, 25-20, through five minutes. Going into halftime, Skidegate held on to a slight lead with the score 36-29. The early part of the third saw Ahousaht begin to gain momentum and trail by a single point, 4039, through five minutes of play. But just as Ahousaht took momentum in the early part of the quarter,
the Saints took it back and reestablished their nine point lead. With one quarter to play the score was 53-49 for the Saints, ensuring an exciting finish for the fans packed into the Russell Gamble Gymnasium. Ahousaht tied things up less than a minute into the final frame, but with five minutes to play the Saints were up 61-57. The Suns were persistent in the late going, trailing 69-63 with one minute to play, but the defending champs would prove to be too much as they took their third straight title 72-70. “We came out and we knew that Ahousaht wasn’t going to give us anything. We knew we had to come out and we knew we had to work hard. Our offence wasn’t coming together quite as well as every other year, but we pushed through it, we grinded it out and that is the win this year ... we were ready for this. We are here to win. This is what
we come here to do,” said Desi Collinson, who won his third consecutive Most Valuable Player Award. “The difference was our hustle and our belief in ourselves. We never doubt that we’re going to win. We just hit the boards hard on both ends, trust each other and play hard defense ... it feels good to Desi Collinson make Skidegate happy and to make Haida Gwaii happy with the big win,” said Best Defensive Player Jason Alsop. Although they fell short of winning the banner, two players from Ahousaht claimed three individual awards. Greg Charlie was named Mr. Hustle and Tournament High Scorer with 161 points in six games while Luke Robinson was named Most Inspirational Player. William Edwards of Prince Rupert was given the Sixth Man Award. Tournament all-stars included Tyler York and Darcy Pearson of Skidegate, Greg Charlie and Tra-

Metlakatla dethrones Nanaimo with one-point Women’s win By Shaun Thomas The Northern connector
PRINCE RUPERT - For the second straight year the Nanaimo Spirit faced off with the Metlakatla Crest in the finals of the All Native Basketball Tournament after losing to the Crest in the A bracket final and coming through the back door, but this year Metlakatla would not be denied. The familiar foes proved to once again be evenly matched in the early going as Metlakatla led by a single three pointer, 8-5, after five minutes. Neither team was able to pull away as the quarter progressed, but a buzzer-beating three from just past half court by Denise Wilson gave Metlakatla a 17-11 lead going into the second. Nanaimo worked to chip away at that lead, but the Crest had an answer for everything and led 25-21 through five minutes of play. The Spirit had trouble getting much to drop in the later part of the quarter, which led to a 32-23 Metlakatla lead heading into the half. Nanaimo’s offence started to click in the third as they trailed 38-
35 through five minutes and tied things up at 38 just seconds later. With 10 minutes left it was still anyone’s game as Metlakatla held a slim 47-43 lead. With such a close game and the championship on the line, the crowd became deafening with every basket, rebound and foul. Metlakatla held on to a 57-54 lead through five minutes, but the game was far from over. Nanaimo took their first lead of the game with 2:47 on the clock and with one minute remaining the score was 63-60 for the Spirit. A layup by Roberta Edzerza tied it up at 63 with 17.6 and she made good on a subsequent foul shot to give the Crest the lead. A collision with 8.5 seconds stopped the play and sent Nanaimo’s Heather Charleson to the line who went 0 for 2, but Nanaimo got the ball back on a toss up only for the Crest to create a turnover and claim their first championship in five years with a 64-63 victory. “Redemption always feels good. We have a small team and we work hard every year ... the difference was a lot of our other players that don’t always score really
stepped it up, which is great. You could tell in this game they were tripling me and doubling up on our guard, so they really stepped it up,” said Most Valuable Player Judy Carlick-Pearson. “It’s awesome to bring the championship back to Metlakatla. It’s been five years and we wanted it bad this year. We wanted it bad last year but we lost by two. This year we won by one. We couldn’t have played a better team. Nanaimo gives us a fight every single game and they have heart right to the end. This year we had more heart than them and last year was a year of ‘would have, could have, should have’ ... it was a fun game. Hats off to Nanaimo,” said Best Defensive Player Denise Wilson, who noted the team was healthier going into this year’s tournament. Nanaimo’s Jolene Nagy was one of the big winners in the individual awards, taking the Ms. Hustle, Most Inspirational Player and Tournament High Scorer award with 146 points in five games, while Megan Metz of third-place Kitamaat won the Sixth Woman award and the Most Promising Player.

“As a proud
British Columbian, protecting our coast is one of our greatest priorities.”
This endorsement came with 209 conditions that we must meet before we start operations. These conditions reflect the input of thousands of British Columbians and Canadians, and include many of the commitments we made in our submission. We are working towards meeting these conditions in the same way we’ve been working hard to meet the tough conditions put forward by the Province. Many of these conditions centre around the preservation and protection of the diverse marine life that populate the coast of B.C. In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the details behind a number of these conditions with you – like detailed emergency response and mammal protection plans. We’ve consulted with experts from around the world to make sure that we’re doing everything possible to protect B.C.’s coastline. We’re doing all this hard work because we are committed to building a safer, better pipeline. Sincerely,
Janet Holder Leader of Northern Gateway

I’m Janet Holder, leader of Northern Gateway. This past December, my team came one step closer towards our goal of building a better pipeline. After the most comprehensive, scientific review in Canadian pipeline history, the independent Joint Review Panel concluded that Canadians would be better off with Northern Gateway, than without it.

Lapointe Engineering Ltd. (LEL) announces the retirement of AngELo LAmonAto, P.Eng. On Friday, January 31, 2014 a retirement celebration was held to honour Angelo Lamonato’s 22 years of service as a mechanical engineer at LEL. Over 50 guests attended Angelo’s retirement celebration, held in the recently built Project Management building at LEL. Stories were shared, including when Angelo joined LEL and lead the newly formed Mechanical Engineering Division, to the more recent years when he mentored newly recruited engineers. One of the gifts presented to Angelo was his earliest drawing completed for LEL, presented by Robin Lapointe, P.Eng., (board President) and senior partners Alex Ramos-Espinoza, P.Eng., and Mark Gravel, P.Eng. While LEL is happy for Angelo and his wife Darlene, as they begin this new chapter in their lives, we know that we are losing part of our family.
Best of luck Angelo!

Groups meet FORT ST. JOHN - First Nations leaders and representatives from government and industry switched places earlier this week to help understand different perspectives around proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects across northern B.C. A group of First Nations leaders visited a natural gas extraction site while government and industry visited the historic Charlie Lake Cave, which features cave paintings up to 11,000 years old to learn about First Nations culture and history. The visits were part of the First Nations LNG Summit. Hosted by Treaty 8 Tribal Association, it took place in Fort St. John this week. The event is designed to give First Nations leaders the information and ideas they need to help their communities to make balanced and informed decisions. Chief Roland Willson of the West Moberly First Nations, one of the Treaty 8 Nations, said: “This event is all about helping First Nations to better understand liquefied natural gas, and helping government and industry to better understand the perspective of First Nations.

Sucha Singh Saran May 19, 1933 - Feb 17, 2014
Born May 19th, 1933 in India, our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully with his large, loving family by his side. Sucha Singh Saran lived in Terrace for 50 years where he worked hard to provide for his family. He loved his daily routine of buying lottery tickets, getting his morning coffee, and joyfully greeting everyone that passed by. His loud laugh and friendly spirit was felt and heard by strangers, acquaintances and those close to him. Sucha was a classic example of the impact a beautiful soul can make. He lived a full life and will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife, six children, 15 grandchildren and one great grand-daughter. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Funeral services will be held at Riverside Funeral Home in Delta BC, on Saturday February 22nd at 3:00 pm.

Kings’ championship dreams dashed TERRACE - It just wasn’t their year. After a standout season that saw the Terrace River Kings at the top of the Central Interior Hockey League (CIHL) regular season standings, the senior men’s team lost to the Smithers Steelheads in the final game of the western conference final Sunday afternoon. The two teams battled it out Saturday, Feb. 15 in Terrace – a
must-win for the River Kings, down 1-0 in the best of three series after suffering a stunning 8-1 game one loss in Smithers. And the packed house at the Terrace Sportsplex wasn’t disappointed – back-and-forth game kept the fans on their toes, going into overtime tied at five, in what might have been one of the best CIHL games in years.
The Kings’ Corey Dekelver scored at 8:32 to give Terrace the 6-5 OT win and keep their hopes alive, setting them up for a final, deciding game the next day. Sunday’s game was physical. The Steelheads, up 2-0 at the end of the first, entered the second period with their roster severely cut, losing two players to injury and seeing two players ejected following a check-
ing from behind call and a tussle between the two teams at the Steelheads’ bench. But that didn’t stop Smithers from finding the back of the net – they went up 4-0 at the end of the third – and it wasn’t until 12:30 in the third that Terrace was able to answer, making the final score 4-1 Steelheads, to set them up for the CIHL finals. Terrace goalie Garrett
Muir saw 48 shots during Sunday’s game, with 37 shots on net heading the Steelheads’ way. In the eastern finals, the Williams Lake Stampeders took two at home against the Quesnel Kangeroos to win the series and set up the final between the Stamps and the Steelheads – a repeat of last season’s matchup that ultimately saw Smithers win in two games.

KITIMAT - This week the BC Winter Games kicked off in Mission, and a number of Kitimat athletes made the trek to compete against the province’s best. A female curling team, a karate team and gymnastics competitors are all on their way. In all, 19 people are going, including coaches. Representing the curlers is Team Reese-Hansen. On that team is Taylor Reese-Hansen, Micaela Stevenson (third), Leah Anthony (second), Emma Baker as lead, and fifth is Jordyn Zanella. Nicholas Ferguson and Yeoh Melissa are going as
competitors for the Kitimat gymnasts. In karate, Jeremy Baker, Sage Benet, Taya Hill, Alyssa Pangan, Nolan Striker and Ethan Velho are all set to compete. The curlers’ head coach Laurel DeGoeij said that their whole team is quite excited about the competition. “I think they will do really well if they keep their nerves in check,” she said. This is the third year that most of the team has curled together, while all have risen in positions. As for their biggest competition, she said the girls frequently talk about the competition they’ll see from the Hawes Rink. The Hawes Rink is based in Coquitlam.
The Junior Boys Rainmakers celebrate their zones championship on Saturday after defeating Terrace 47-37.

PRINCE RUPERT - It took two games to achieve it, but the Charles Hays Secondary School (CHSS) Junior Boys basketball team beat their Terrace-competitors 47-37 in the second final of the 2014 Northwest Zone Championship hosted at CHSS. “I’m really proud of the guys ... everybody on the court gave it their all. They all had something they needed to ice down after,” said Kevin Sawka, who has coached the team for 14 years and earned the team’s tenth Northwest Zone Championship over the weekend. Going into zones the Rainmakers were ranked No. 1 in the region, winning their first game against Queen Charlotte Secondary School (QCSS) 71-34 for a spot in the A bracket semifinal. Meanwhile, Terrace’s Caledonia Secondary School beat Lax Kw’alaams’ Coast Tsimshian Academy 51-39 to play against Rupert. QCSS scraped by 54-53 against Coast Tsimshian Academy to play in
the loser’s bracket semi-final, which the Rainmakers forced Terrace into after beating them 45-34. Caledonia bounced back, winning 44-32 against Queen Charlotte for another go against Prince Rupert. Because the team was entering the final through the loser’s bracket, Caledonia would have to defeat CHSS twice to win zones. In the first final on Saturday, the Rainmakers surpassed the Caledonia Kermodes in the second quarter and narrowly maintained the lead at halftime with 22-17. By the third quarter’s end, the Kermodes led with 33-29, with the teams fighting for first throughout the fourth quarter. With under 20 seconds left in the game, it appeared Caledonia had won by a two-point lead, but CHSS’ Nicolis Campbell sunk two free throws to tie the game and add three minutes to the clock. Despite the extra time, CHSS lost 48-45; Campbell scored 15 points of the Rainmakers’ points, with Mitchell Nelson earning 11 and George Mason nine.
The Rainmakers came back with more energy and focus in the second final, earning an 18-4 lead by the first quarter’s end. CHSS held their advantage throughout the game, which ended 47-37 in their favour. Campbell was once again the highest shooter with 14 points, significantly higher than other players. “Nick played big. I was really proud of him,” Sawka said. The Rainmakers’ George Mason was named the Most Valuable Player of the Northwest Zone Championship, with CHSS’ Campbell and Quinn Leighton, Caledonia’s Dylan King and Gabriel Johnson and Coast Tsimshian Academy’s Kaine Wesley named all-stars. The Rainmakers are now eligible to compete with 24 other teams in the 2014 BCHSBBA Junior Boys Invitational Provincial Tournament in Langley later this month, entering with an honourable mention as a top 14 ranked junior boys team in B.C. The Rainmakers first game at provincials will be on Feb. 26.

Jets bench boss flying high By Bruce Penton
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
With every Winnipeg Jets’ victory in early February, the screws tightened on about a half-dozen National Hockey League coaches. Thanks a lot, Paul Maurice, said the coaches in Toronto, New Jersey, Long Island, Nashville, Vancouver and Phoenix and any other NHL city home to an underachieving club whose owners and fans had playoff visions dancing in their heads. In January, you see, Maurice stepped into a quagmire that was the dysfunctional Jets’ organization following the firing of Claude Noel, and suddenly his team started to win. In the first 12 games under his guidance, the Jets won nine, a .750 winning percentage that would easily earn a playoff spot if carried through an entire season. Broadcaster Don Cherry, for one, wasn’t surprised with the Jets’ quick turnaround. Players almost always rise to the occasion following a coach’s dismissal, he said, if only to ostensibly say to the general manager, ‘See, it was bad coaching all along, not bad playing.’ As the NHL went on a three-week vacation thanks to the Olympic Games, the Jets found themselves a mere two points out of a playoff spot. Before Noel was given the boot, no one beyond the Jets’ organization or its fan club entertained the notion of earning a playoff berth. One team at whose heels the Jets are nipping is the Vancouver Canucks, who were 2-8 in the 10 games leading into the Olympic
