Marnie Todd poses with Canadian Olympic halfpipe silver medalist Mike Riddle in Sochi, Russia. Marnie Todd arrived in Sochi on February 12. The Keremeos massage therapist was part of the Canadian Freestyle Ski Team’s support team. Todd spent the days prior to her arrival in Sochi with the halfpipe team as they completed training in France. Edmonton based Riddle was the first Canadian to medal in the Olympic halfpipe event’s debut at Sochi.
A late February snowfall put residents of the Lower Similkameen and Keremeos in a grumpy mood Sunday morning, in spite of Team Canada’s early Sunday ice hockey gold medal performance in Sochi on the final day of the Olympics. Snow that first began falling Saturday afternooon continued falling through Sunday and Monday, with significant accumulations - up to 10 centimetres in the Lower Similkameen - piling up on village roads and valley highways. Keremeos and District Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jordy Bosscha said the department responded to a rollover motor vehicle accident near the Lawrence ranch, about 17 kilometres west of the village late Sunday afternoon. Highway 3 was shut down for a period of time while emergency crews attended the scene. Two people, who were taken to hospital by BC Ambulance, had to be extricated from the vehicle. Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department also responded to an MVA north of the community on Highway 97 at around 2:45 p.m. Sunday, causing a traffic snarl for about 45 minutes. Another accident occurred at the east end of the Keremeos bypass on Monday morning. No serious injuries were reported but both vehicles suffered major damage. Highway 3 north of Keremeos to the junction of Highway 97 was covered with icy compact snow for the start of the work week Monday. “Why did the groundhog have to be right this year?” asked Infocentre Manager Colleen Chris-
tensen, “I’m tired of winter.” “I’m driving to the coast tomorrow,” said Bill Copeland of Cawston, surveying the snow covered street. “It’s just not letting up.” Downtown business merchants shovelled their storefronts several times through Monday afternoon. Traffic was lighter than normal for Monday, with pedestrian traffic even more so. “It’s just ridiculous,” said Mac Watson who contracts to clean snow for various village venues. “I checked the weather, it was supposed to clear up by noon, but it keeps coming.” Roads were particularly slippery on Sunday and Monday afternoons. One member of the Village of Keremeos maintenance department was absent Monday, making it difficult for the village crew to keep up with road plowing and sanding. New snow on top of the previous day’s compacted snowfall resulted in some very slippery streets for pedestrians on Monday. “The storm was highly variable as it moved through the area,” said Doug Lindquist, Meteorologist for Environment Canada in Kelowna. “It was probably the most concentrated in the Similkameen. Penticton records show upwards of nine centimetres accumulating since Saturday morning, while only a centimetre fell in the Kelowna area.” Lindquist said it isn’t all that unusual to see such snowfall amounts this time of year. Weather conditions are predicted to warm up through to the weekend, when another arctic front is expected.

Good neighbour legislation back before council By Steve Arstad news@keremeosreview.com Keremeos council approved a resolution to be forwarded to the Union of BC Municipalities at the February 17 meeting of council. Mayor Bauer attempted to educate dissenting council members with respect to the motion’s many flaws, advising them that there was little basis in science or research to suggest the motion would benefit society. Councillors Thielmann, Arlow, and Evans ignored the new evidence, however, approving the motion for submission to the UBCM. Staff reports included the budget variance report for 2013. A recommendation to authorize a $69,030 transfer of general fund surplus to reserves for future roadworks
projects was approved by council. A sewer fund surplus of $19,407 was placed in the sewer reserve for future sewer expenditures. A minor deficit of $116 in the water fund was topped up from water reserves. Council took a look at upcoming capital projects listed in the five year plan. None of the projects were eliminated from the capital budget, but council did request more information on a possible dog park site within the village, as well as for an electric vehicle recharging station. Council agreed to support an application for a Healthy Communities Capacity Building Grant in the amount of $20,000. The grant application would be submitted by the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen and would be applied to hire a healthy community co-
ordinator to organize multi-sector partnerships events for Keremeos, Princeton and Area “G”. Council took another look at the contentious Good Neighbour Bylaw, which several village residents took umbrage with at a council meeting several weeks ago. The reworked document was still contentious to some, including at least two residents in the gallery, who objected to language in the document that they perceived would make the use of a bow and arrow illegal within village limits. Mayor Bauer promised to ensure that bow sport activities would be allowed to continue under the revamped legislation. The document is now at third reading, as staff gather information regarding use of bows in the village.
Vote for apple industry development council fails Contributed
The Fruit Growers’ Association (BCFGA) announced last week the results of a vote on a proposed Apple Research and Promotion Agency. The initiative was designed to help industry act collectively on research and promotion projects. Registered apple growers (those with over two acres producing apples) were asked, “Do you support the plan to establish an apple industry development council for British Columbia apple producers, November, 2013”? The vote, counted last week, is YES - 135 NO - 133 Spoiled - 1 TOTAL - 269 Eligible voters from Master List - 623 The plan called for a minimum of 40 per cent of registered growers to vote in order to achieve a valid result. A total of 43.2 per cent voted, so the BCFGA
considers the result to be valid. The plan called for a minimum of 65 per cent of votes to be “Yes” in order to consider the vote positive and make a recommendation that the minister approve the plan. Only 50 per cent voted “Yes”, so the plan will not be forwarded to the Minister of Agriculture. “While the BCFGA hoped that the initiative would pass, it is clear that the industry is not ready for an Apple Research and Promotion Agency. We will advise the apple associations from other provinces that the initiative is ended, and pursue other strategic approaches to improving our industry,” said Fred Steele, President of the BCFGA. Further information on the initiative is available at the website www.bcapplecouncil.org The BCFGA is an agriculture association with a membership of 550 commercial tree fruit growers in B.C. It celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2014.

Editorial Council resolution badly researched A resolution introduced by Keremeos Councillor Arlene Arlow for submission to the Union of BC Municipalities at the last council meeting returned for further discussion on Feb.17. Keremeos Mayor Manfred Bauer brought forward to council additional information regarding the resolution, which sought to “request the UBCM to petition the province to require all motels, hotels and other public accommodation facilities to change their telephone systems so that emergency services are accessible from all rooms simply by dialing 911 without the need to first dial for an outside line.” Bauer did some homework regarding the issue, and presented some compelling reasons for council to reconsider the motion. Apparently the rest of council didn’t do their homework, Bauer and Councillor Cowling notwithstanding. (They were the only two opposed to the motion.) As Bauer noted, there is little evidence other than an anecdotal story coming out of the U.S. about one instance where a child couldn’t dial 911 from a motel room - to suggest this resolution is a necessary, or even desireable, requirement for society. With only two motels in the village, both of whom would be forced to pay for an expensive reconfiguration of their phone systems, why Keremeos council would even meddle in such an edict is a good question. The present version of council hasn’t done a lot in its term to create much in the way of lasting positive impressions with village residents. With a muncipal election looming this year, the last thing they should be doing is wasting time, energy and money on knee-jerk resolutions that with even the most cursory research should have been defeated at the outset.

Scams, lack of competition erode government purchasing power By Justin Bateman Canadian Taxpayers Federation When it comes to a lot of government activity, taxpayers often want to ignore how the sausage is made: Just take as little of our money as possible, spend it wisely, and make sure the services we depend on are there when we need them. Bureaucracies love that apathy – it allows them to escape scrutiny of their actions and policies. Thus taxpayers must remain vigilant, looking in on every aspect of government management, even the parts that may cause eyes to glaze over. If we don’t, abuse and waste can occur – and we end up picking up the tab. Government purchasing policies, for example, are an area ripe for mismanagement, abuse and even criminal activity, as several startling examples of such waste have recently revealed. A Freedom of Informa-
tion request published by The Province revealed that 10 different scams involving provincial government employees were investigated by the comptroller general in the second quarter of 2013. Several of those scams involved purchasing decisions. There was an undercover investigation into two suppliers and two government employees who may have been working a kickback scheme – billing taxpayers for non-existent services. Another case involved an autism service provider who appears to have been charging government for kids who did not exist. A scam by Vancouver Island’s Victoria Ann Rutenberg ended up in court. Rutenberg was convicted on three counts of fraud after billing the provincial government $357,000 over two years for taking care of children who didn’t exist. Bad government purchasing decisions come in a variety of forms, and not only extreme, illegal
ones. Some are caused by inadequate vetting of suppliers or no verification of invoices. Others come through sole sourcing. Often, terms of reference will be tinkered with to ensure only one supplier can meet the criteria – thus eliminating the power of competition. The common thread: they all cost taxpayers. Last year, when the Vancouver Island Health Authority sought bids for a home medical equipment supplier, it tailored the bid specifications to mirror precisely what the current supplier, the Red Cross, offers. Private home medical equipment dealers were effectively shut out, and taxpayers lost the benefit of competition to drive prices down. Politicians usually go to great lengths to avoid purchasing issues, as they are rife with the potential for conflicts of interest and scandal. Yet, Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson met with opinion firm Vision Critical a few weeks before the company was given an untendered,

$151,000 contract, according to documents uncovered by reporter Bob Mackin. Surrey went with the same company, but at least they put out a call for expressions of interest from other firms before settling on Vision Critical. Taxpayers need to demand vigilance from our governments, pushing elected officials – our voices in the bureaucracy – to protect our interests. That means asking tough questions about how their organization spends their money, and investigating process complaints. No politician runs for office solely on a platform to reform purchasing, but this is an important issue that they need to address. Are taxpayers getting as much value as possible from every dollar spent? And are government purchasing practices being regularly analyzed and improved? Even if you don’t want to look at how the sausage is being made, someone needs to.

Planning society discuss tourism, water issues

Shane Wright discusses local food map - Buy Local! Buy Fresh! with Similkameen Valley Planning Society members By Steve Arstad news@keremeosreview.com Members of the Similkameen Valley Planning Society gathered for their monthly meeting after a short hiatus on Wednesday, February 12 at Cawston Hall. Princeton Town Council recently appointed Councillor Kim Maynard to the SVPS board, however, Princeton Mayor Frank Armitage was also in attendance at the February 12 meeting. It was also the first meeting of the SVPS for recently elected Lower Similkameen Indian Band Chief Keith Crow. Former Tourism Advisory Council Chair Joan McMurray brought the board up to date with
respect to the regional tourism strategy. She told the board that negotiations were underway to purchase a one page ad in the Thompson Okanagan regional tourist guide at a cost of $1,800 - $1,900, as a two page ad similar to what was purchased last year was too expensive. McMurray was waiting for a response from the guide’s design team. The Similkameen’s valley wide tourist guide is now “fully subscribed” McMurray reported. The 34 page guide still needs to be approved by the Lower Similkameen Indian Band, as Chief Crow noted that so far “no native influences” have been input into the publication. McMurray also reported that an industry day for tourism stakeholders was planned (similar to that which took place at the Princeton Golf Club last year) at the Grist Mill, date still to be announced. Shane Wright, who recently developed a Buy Local! Buy Fresh! year round guide map to local food, spoke to the society about purchasing ad space on his brochure. Wright hoped to add the South Okanagan and Similkameen to the maps’ boundaries, now in its second year. After some discussion with respect to the brochure’s merits, the board passed a motion to buy a $500 placement in the guide.
Liisa Bloomfield, engineer with the regional district, brought the board up to date with progress of the Similkameen Watershed study. The final version of Phase one of the report is complete, but Bloomfield said there were some information gaps to be filled in, with respect to three items: 1. Water supply and demand. 2. Collected data not yet analyzed. 3. Water quality status and trend analysis. Bloomfield said $210,000 currently remained in the Watershed Study budget. Work identified is expected to take another year to complete, and a recent partnership signed with the LSIB to incorporate their data was underway. The society provided a grant of $250 to the local DARE program, while turning down a request for $2,500 from the Keremeos and District Arts Council. Regional District Area “G” Director Angelique Wood made two requests for funding from the society, first one being to run the five part Community Conversations series, with mileage costs for invited speakers being the primary cost. Her second request was for funding to pay some hard costs (mileage and equipment rental) for a short film where the filmmakers have offered to donate their time and expertise.

Fortis rep attempts to clarify electrical rates To the Editor: Re: FortisBC rates I am writing in response to a recent letter published in the Keremeos Review regarding FortisBC’s electricity rates. We applied last year for a 3.3 per cent increase in electricity rates for 2014 to address rising power costs and pay for the necessary investment
to the electrical system. Our regulator, the BC Utilities Commission, has not yet approved the rate increase, but has given FortisBC interim approval as of January 1, 2014. That means current residential electricity rates of 9.09 cents/ kWh for the first 1,600 kWh and 13.54 cents above that reflect the 3.3 per cent increase.
If the BCUC does not approve the increase or approves a lower rate increase, customers will be credited the difference. For more information on FortisBC electricity rates, please visit fortisbc.com/electricityrates. Corey Sinclair, Manager, Regulatory Affairs, FortisBC

Fortis not revealing true cost of tier two rate hike To the Editor: In the Feb. 20 edition of the Review, Darryl McDonald wrote that Fortis seems confused as to what their rates are, but with no disrespect intended, I must disagree with him, and I will explain. I have a copy of a full page ad from the Feb. 13 edition of the Review in which Fortis explains the residential conservation rate and it clearly states that the tier one rate is 9.09 cents and the two tier rate is 13.54 cents. It states on my latest Fortis bill they were granted an interim rate increase of 3.3 per cent effective Jan. 1. If you take the old tier one rate of 0.08803 cents, plus the 3.3 per cent increase, the new tier one rate should be 0.09093, or 9.09 cents, which is what the ad states, but if you take the old tier two rate of 0.12952 plus 3.3 per cent, it should be 0.13379, or 13.38 cents, not 13.54 cents. My most recent bill for the period up to Jan. 16 shows the
amount for tier two at the old rate, and the interim rate increase amount, which is actually 4.56 per cent instead of the 3.3 per cent it should be. This works out to an overcharge of $2.14 on my bill. Two dollars and fourteen cents is not a large amount, but over a year this will add up and as it would appear that they are overcharging every customer by 1.3 per cent this will be a very large amount of money that Fortis should not be getting. I phoned Fortis this morning (Monday, Feb.24) to get an explanation. They told me that tier one is a 3.3 per cent increase and tier two is acutally closer to 4.6 per cent, but it seems they conveniently neglected to inform us of this increase. The agent I spoke with tried to explain the higher increase on tier two as necessary because on tier two as necessary because they don’t know how many customers will
try to conserve and so they need to have a bigger increase on tier two to maintain the same income. Does that make any sense to you? The whole idea of the conservation rate was to reduce electricity usage, but it seems that if we do conserve, they will just increase the rate. It appears that those of us that use electricity to heat our homes will be further subsidizing everyone who heats with gas. I believe that Fortis knows exactly what its rates are and they made a deliberate decision to not tell us about the higher tier two increase, knowing we would not be happy and they were hoping that we wouldn’t notice. A Fortis manager is supposed to be calling me to try to explain the rationale of this higher increase, but as of Monday afternoon I have not received his call. Bill Copeland, Cawston
Protest against government corruption to take place in Keremeos To the Editor: Fair Elections Act What a contradiction of terms when it comes from Stephen Harper’s Canada. I know my democratic Canada would not try and lay this on its citizens. Stephen Harper’s Canada would stop Elections Canada from placing ads in the media encouraging Canadians to vote. In our society where voting turnout is sometimes very low I would think this encouragement would help get more people out to vote, especially the younger voter. Stephen Harper’s Canada would stop Elections Canada from issuing Voter Registration cards used for
identification at the polls and do away with vouching for someone you know personally for ID. This will prevent thousands of legitimate citizens from voting. In my democratic Canada voting is a right of every Canadian. The only group these changes to the Elections Act will benefit is Harper’s Conservatives. I am organizing a protest march against government corruption in Ottawa/Victoria, taking place at Memorial Park on March 1, starting at 11a.m. This is your opportunity to voice your democratic right against an undemocratic government, to stop Stephen Harper’s Canada. George Venables, Cawston
Two tiered hydro rate source of scorn for provincial government To the Editor: An open letter to Premier Christy Clark: Step up or step down You made a two tiered system that doesn’t work the way you thought. It was supposed to get us to save energy. What it really did was hurt the most vulnerable. We already turned off our extra lights, turned our thermostats down and put on sweaters. Who you hurt the most were seniors on low incomes, people that live in the country that don’t have access to natural gas, all those making minimum wage and small business that couldn’t afford hydro before, or especially now.
When a senior has to decide to pay their hydro bill or buy food, that’s wrong. Step up and get the energy commission to stop the two tiered system immediately, not next November. By then it will be too late for a lot of us. The next time you look in a mirror, take a look at yourself. What you’ll see is the monster that’s hurting all seniors in B.C. I didn’t vote for you before and I’m sure not voting for you in the next election. You are, in my opinion, the worst thing that has happened in B.C. in many, many years. Step down before it’s too late for B.C. seniors. P. Sanderson, Cawston

Budding Olympians at BC Games
Max Todd finished 7th in slopestyle and 8th in moguls at the BC Winter Games last week. Todd used the event to showcase some new, more difficult tricks during the competition. Sister Kassidy Todd turned in a dual silver performance in both events. The Keremeos residents had a great BC Winter Games experience, competing at Hemlock Mountain Resort on Feb 21 and
22 for Moguls and Slopestyle. Both Todds have qualified through their B.C. and Canadian Series points for the Canadian Junior Nationals in Quebec, which are March 13-16. They have one more competition before that, a BC Series event at Silver Star on March 7-9 before their season winds up with Provincial Championships at Mount Washington on Vancouver Island April 2-5.

Freestyle team celebrates successful Sochi Olympics
Marnie Todd (second from left, standing) with the Canadian halfpipe team in the Olympic rings at Sochi, (support staff below). “It was a great event,” said Marnie of her Olympic experience. “ All freestyle events were at the mountain venues, so we stayed in the athlete’s village up there. We were minutes from every venue, transportation was super easy, and the volunteers were very friendly and helpful. “ The weather was a bit challenging at times for winter sports but the sun was lovely! The Canadian freestyle skiers won seven medals which was amazing to be a part of. “Everyone I spoke with had a great experience in Sochi.”

Director’s motions aim at climate action, Interior Health By Steve Arstad news@keremeosreview. com Regional district directors asked staff to prepare two director’s motions for submittal to the Southern Interior
Local Government Association and the Union of BC Municipalities. Directors Siddon (Area “D”) and Litke (Penticton) put forward a request to provincial and federal governments to renew
their commitment to meeting greenhouse gas reduction targets. Director Stu Wells, (Osoyoos) also put forward a late resolution to request staff to investigate Interior Health’s beach sampling process and
report back to the board. The motion came after suggestions that changes to IH’s beach water quality analysis will be disastrous for the local tourist industry. Wells told the
board instead of four samples of water averaged, the health authority could now potentially close a beach based on a single reading spike. “That spike could be for many reasons,” Wells commented.

Regional district briefs Director recognizes need for additional funding Area “D” Director Tom Siddon recognized the need for additional funding sources for small water purveyors at the Thursday, February 20 regional district board meeting. He added a source protection study for Kaleden Irrigation District’s water supply to a list of possible projects up for funding from the Okanagan
news Basin Water Board’s water conservation and quality improvement grant application. Siddon also made the pitch to OBWB President, Dr. Anna Warwick Sears, encouraging the OBWB to provide financial support to small water districts. The KID, faces problems similar to other irrigation districts in the region as Interior Health continues to move forward with its 43210 water quality protocol. The policy would have small water purveyors potentially invest millions in additional filtration and treatment procedures.
Directors have change of heart over change requests Last minute changes of heart amongst a number of directors threatened to derail second reading of the regional district budget at the February 20 regular board meeting. A change request for Climate Action funding in the amount of $15,655 was revived and approved after an earlier meeting discussed the potential failure of the regional district’s present climate action program. continued on page 15

Similkameen Sparks Jori Bishop on the offense against Charles Bloom’s Shelby Baumi (9) and Jenna Mulholland (14) during Saturday’s contest at last weekend’s valleys tournament in Keremeos.
Similkameen girls miss finals at weekend tournament - but not by much Contributed by Similkameen Sparks Coach Fred Danenhower
The 2014 Okanagan Valley “A” Valley Basketball Senior Girls Championships took place at Similkameen Elementary Secondary School on February 20 - 22. SESS senior girls played Barriere in their first contest in the tournament, winning 76-41. They weren’t so fortunate in the second round, however, falling to number two rated Kelowna Christian by a score of 5347. The game, which played to a packed senior gym on Friday night, was a barnburner, with the SESS Sparks down 33-17 at one point. They tied the game at 44-44, only to succumb to Christian late in the game. SESS Sparks played the Charles Bloom Wolves on Saturday morning, winning by a score of 74 - 52. In their final game, Sparks beat Osoyoos Rattlers 84-65 to finish third overall in the weekend tournament. By finishing third, Similkameen qualifies for the 2014 Single “A” Girls Provincials in Lumby March 5-8.

The first public event of 2014 at the Grist Mill had a definite spring theme to it. “Seedy Saturday” kicked off this year’s season at the mill, with more than 70 people attending the morning session alone. Seeds and information were exchanged in the Tea Room, amongst several vendors set up for the occasion, including Naramata Seeds, the Similkameen Garden Club, and a vendor dealing in worm casings. “The idea of an annual seed swap is not new,” said Similkammeen resident Lee McFadyen, who offered a pre-
sentation on organic farming on Saturday afternoon. “Sharon Rempel, who used to look after the gardens here at the mill, initiated the seed swap 24 years ago at VanDusen Gardens. She is the one responsible for bringing Red Fife Wheat to the mill. “An exchange took place at Cawston Hall for a number of years, but eventually petered out. This function marks a revival of the exchange,” said McFadyen. “Seed exchanges are a common occurrence across the country around this time of year, McFadyen added. “Seed exchanges highlight the importance and biodiversity of seeds,” she said.
Regional District briefs / continued from page 12 That request elicited a second one for revival of another failed change request for additional support staff for the regional district’s ancillary agencies, at a cost of $73,000. After some discussion, and a threat by Oliver rural Director Allan Patton to bring all previously rejected requests back to the table, the board gave the budget second reading, but did not approve additional funding for HR support staff. The budget has already been presented to the public for approval in the region’s various member municipalities and electoral areas. Carriage House legislation in Area “H” moves to public hearing A site specific bylaw that will allow carriage houses as a permitted use in Area “H” received first and second reading and will proceed to public hearing. The bylaw will allow 12 parcels in a development at 590 East Similkameen Road to contain carriage houses. “A broader amendment will be coming at a later date,” Area “H” Director Brad Hope told the board on February 20. “We’re comfortable with this.” Certain specifics are legislated in the carriage house legislation. They must be: - subordinate in size to the principal residence on the property; - compliment but not replicate the principal residence; - respect the scale and built form of neighbouring properties; and - respect the privacy of adjacent neighbours by trying to minimize overlook and shadowing impacts. Fire department remuneration to be instituted in Tulameen,Willowbrook This year’s budget will include additonal taxes for Willowbrook and Tulameen’s fire departments, in the order of $8,000 each. The funds mark the inititation of a plan to standardize wages within the regional district’s fire departments.

MEDITATION - THE ANSWERING By Sharon Taphorn, Vancouver BC PART II Make a conscious choice to meditate. - Sit down, take some deep breaths. - Slow your thoughts and your heartbeat down. Focus on your breathing. - Meditate. If you find your thoughts wondering, focus on your breathing. Offer Gratitude for the experience. A basic approach to meditation Sit upright in a comfortable chair, such as a high back dining room chair, or any chair that allows your feet to rest flat on the floor, you may sit (and feel free to sit in the lotus position if you can get there) on the floor or ground. Be mindful not to slouch or hunch forward, these will cause strains and often block your ability to release the physical plane. The energy channels flow so much better when our spine is straight, and you will likely have an expanded experience with the increased flow. Keep your chest open and your shoulders gently back. This allows your lungs to fill easily and fully. Gently close your eyes and breathe deeply, slowly filling your lungs to capacity by inhaling through your nose. Once they have reached capacity, pause for just a moment and then exhale gently, keeping your lips and cheeks relaxed. At the end of your exhalation, pause for another moment then begin to inhale again through your nose. (I do not mouth breath unless I am doing a specific type of cleansing breath. Exhale through your nose then through your mouth, choosing the method that works best for you.) Closing your eyes and focusing on your breathing for even a few seconds causes an immediate shift in your conscious awareness. This is a great way to start any mediation experience. What about lying down, or sitting in a reclining chair? While many people do meditate in these positions, I have found it a little too easy to fall asleep. I recommend that until you have developed a good meditative practice, that you do not lie down or recline. While sleeping does offer a lovely state of consciousness, it is not the goal we want to reach when meditating. We are looking to reach that level between our ‘awake’ 5 senses and our sleepstate. There is no such thing as a bad meditation. Ideal Self Meditation Begin with a Breathing Meditation After you have taken a few breaths and feel relaxed, picture yourself standing in front of a full-length mirror See yourself in your ideal form. See the clothes you would love to be wearing. See your ideal size and shape. See the joyful expression on your face. As you stare at your ideal self, slowly recite in your mind, a series of affirming thoughts, compassionate and kind…. ‘I awaken to my true self each day’… for example. Start each thought with “I am” or “I choose”. Choose simple affirming thoughts that are meaningful to you. Spend a few minutes focusing on your picture-perfect self and your simple positive thoughts that you have about yourself. If you feel your thoughts begin to drift, bring your attention back, take some breaths and focus again on your ideal self. These are suggestions to get you started. There are no limits to the types of mediations that you can create and experience. To make mediation a part of your lifestyle, start doing it, and don’t stop. It will change your life. As little as 10 minutes each day will produce results, twice a day and you will see profound, positive changes in your life. It has been over thirty years since human insulin has been available for diabetics. Before that, insulin was obtained from the pancreases of slaughtered cows and pigs. These insulins were not exactly the same as human insulin and did cause some adverse reactions in some diabetics.
MEDICATION CLINICAL TRIALS
When human clinical trials are done on new medications, two groups of people are compared: one takes the actual drug while the other group receives a placebo (a look-alike product that contains no drug). The larger the number of people studied, the more reliable the results are. Also, the drug group has to show a definite improvement over the placebo group otherwise the drug won’t be marketed.
DO YOU NEED A BETTER PILLOW?
If you wake up in the morning with a sore or stiff neck, it could be due to your pillow. Since we spend 6-8 hours a day on the pillow, make sure it’s the right one for you. There are many “therapeutic” pillows on the market. Some are shaped to support the neck better and keep the spine in alignment. It might be the answer.
BREEDING GROUNDS FOR BACTERIA
Two breeding grounds for bacteria are your computer keyboard and your bedtime pillow. Because hands transfer bacteria easily, keyboards harbour lots of them. Giving them a quick wipe with a damp cloth will clear some away. As for the pillow, give it a good wash in the washing machine a couple times a year. In these days of fast-paced, computerized times, it’s nice to know you can drop into the pharmacy and speak directly to a pharmacist in person. It’s a good feeling for us too! We hope to see you visit out pharmacy soon.
