Maja Paderewska’s brother charged with murder by Gary McKenna A 27-YEAR-OLD man is facing sec-
ond-degree murder charges after the body of his sister – a Surrey school teacher – was found at a Coquitlam townhome on Sunday. Jarek Paderewski made his first court appearance on Monday in the death of his sister, 33-year-old Maja Paderewska, who worked at North Surrey Secondary. The RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said investigators are still trying to Maja determine what Paderewska led up to the incident. “The motive is not known yet,” said Sgt. Adam MacIntosh. “It is still the subject of the investigation.” On Sunday, BC Ambulance and fire services responded to a medical distress call at a home in the 2900block of Panorama Drive. The victim was found in the residence and an adult male was taken into custody. See PADEREWSKA / Page 4
Review backs new Pattullo New Westminster still wants a Surrey-Coquitlam bypass bridge by Jeff Nagel A NEW four- or six-lane bridge to replace the aging Pattullo Bridge
are the only options TransLink supports out of six that had previously been short-listed. A review team consisting of TransLink, Surrey and New Westminster representatives recommended further study of those two options going into public consultations that had been set to take place in February and March but have been postponed. Off the table are refurbishing the existing Pattullo to operate with just three lanes or building a new five-lane bridge.
Two other options are still being pushed by New Westminster but aren’t supported by the full team: a new Surrey-Coquitlam bridge to bypass New West coupled with a rehabilitated three- or four-lane Pattullo; or a rehabilitated four-lane Pattullo. The $1.5-billion Surrey-Coquitlam link has not been ruled out yet, said Bob Paddon, TransLink executive vice-president of strategic planning and public affairs. “It would be a very expensive option,” he said. “It was on the cusp of not making the cut even several months ago.” See SURREY COUNCILLOR / Page 3

Former Surrey mayor dies in car crash
Pink power About 650 students from Princess Margaret Secondary, F.D Sinclair Elementary, Westerman Elementary and Strawberry Hill Elementary took part in an antibullying flash mob on Pink Shirt Day at Princess Margaret on Wednesday. McKitka’s nephew Will confirmed he heard from his father that his uncle died in a car crash. “My father told me he passed away in a car accident, very few details, and his understanding from his sister was that there was no service,” Will McKitka said Tuesday. “Even at this Ed McKitka time, I don’t think there’s going to be anything for the family. Surrey councillor: Time for the province to intervene From Page 1 New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright still supports the option to help take traffic off New Westminster roads. “That rehab and connection over to Surrey from Coquitlam really has a lot of merit,” Wright said. “Over on the Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam side they have their own trucking industries over there and it would give them perfect access.” Wright said any replacement for the Pattullo should be tolled, a scenario that would
make the Alex Fraser the next nearest free crossing for users of the Pattullo and the tolled Port Mann. Paddon said no decision has been made on tolling the replacement. Paddon said the delay in consultations is because it became apparent TransLink needed to take more time to determine how the Pattullo would fit into a TransLink investment plan regional mayors are drawing up to go to referendum. It is not guaranteed that tolls could fully fund a Pattullo replacement, Paddon said, noting tolls aren’t covering the

Neither the suspect or the victim were known to police and MacIntosh said he was unaware whether RCMP had visited the home prior to the incident. “There is still a lot of work that has to occur,” he said. “We will have to complete the collection of evidence. The suspect is believed to have lived at the townhouse with his parents, however the victim is believed to have resided in Surrey. Many people took to Facebook and Twitter to express their condolences for the loss. Former North Surrey Secondary student Tanu Gill told CBC that Paderewska would often stay late at the school to mentor students. “If you ever needed something, you could instantly go to Miss Paderewska. You know she’s always there after school, during lunch and you could talk to her about anything.” Anyone with information regarding this homicide is asked to call 1-877-551-4448 or email ihittipline@ rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

Oakes said the change comes after the Union of B.C. Municipalities supported it at their convention last September. The issue has been debated many times and has been divisive over the years, with some rural politicians arguing against extending the commitment for jobs with little pay. The change would mean the next municipal election would be held in 2018, on a schedule that follows provincial elections by one year.

Man, 83, struck by fleeing pick-up truck by Kevin Diakiw
A SENIOR is in critical condition after being struck by a truck which was trying to take off after an accident. On Sunday just before 5 p.m., a 2005 Dodge pickup truck smashed into the back of a 1990 Volvo near 74 Avenue and 120 Street. The truck then took off. The driver lost control of his truck about 150 metres away and smashed into a bus stop where an 83-year-old man was sitting. The senior suffered injuries to his head and neck, as well as a collapsed lung. A 26-year-old Surrey man was taken into custody and has since been released. Charges are expected. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said that leaving the scene of an accident is the wrong move, adding in most cases, a collision is just a motor vehicle infraction.
“By leaving the scene, you have now committed a criminal offence,” Paquet said. “It’s a totally different game then.” Apart from facing more severe punishment, staying at the scene and rendering medical assistance when necessary is just the right thing to do, he said. “By sticking around and doing the right thing, you might save a life,” Paquet said.

condition after being stabbed in the groin in Whalley on Saturday. At about 12:30 p.m., ambulance crews arrived in the 14200block of 90 Avenue to find a 40-year-old Surrey man suffering from a stab wound. A 37-year-old Surrey man was arrested at the scene and is expected to face charges of assault causing bodily harm. Police say both men

Mayors scramble to plan TransLink
It’s all about YOU! My clients are my first priority.
Referendum should exclude money for existing service, says Greg Moore by Jeff Nagel
Transportation Minister Todd Stone. They insist the province concede that property tax hikes for TransLink be limited to the additional three per cent increases that the transportation authority is already authorized to raise each year without the mayors’ approval. And they expect the new funding sources on the table to finance the plan would include a vehicle levy, regional sales tax, gas tax, carbon tax, road pricing and related bridge tolling, apart from already tolled provincial bridges. Stone has said the province would be reluctant to give up future toll revenue from the bridges and highways it runs – which include the Port Mann Bridge and the Massey Tunnel, whose replacement might also be tolled – and would instead want to retain that money to maintain and replace
METRO Vancouver may-
ors have agreed to try to meet the province’s June 30 deadline to hammer out a 10-year priorized plan of transportation investments that may be the basis for a referendum on new TransLink taxes by mid-2015. The regional mayors council agreed Friday to form an initial working group, chaired by Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore, to quickly work to develop the regional transportation vision and plan. That group is aiming to report back to the mayors council by April 15. The projects are expected to include broad bus service increases, rapid transit extensions in Vancouver and Surrey, and the replacement of the Pattullo Bridge. The mayors also spelled out their expectations of the province in a Feb. 24 letter to

Province: Ready for talks From page 13
The minister told reporters Tuesday the province is willing to discuss all of the funding sources the mayors are seeking. “There are no preconditions, Stone said.
“At this point we’re not ruling anything out. Critical to any deal with the province is a promised legislated reform of TransLink’s governance structure to give the mayors more control over spending priorities.
The mayors’ council wants the power to set both capital project priorities for TransLink and approve its annual operating budget. That’s much more power than the current model, where the unelected professional board con-

ne would hardly describe residents of the ‘Big Apple’ as ‘complacent.’ New Yorker ‘feistiness’ is legendary. Their latest fight is against road carnage, although by any measure the situation had become intolerable. NYPD statistics recorded 176 pedestrian fatalities in 2013. In the first two weeks of 2014, eleven people were killed on NYC streets, seven of whom were pedestrians. In one night— January 10th, 2014—a tour bus fatally struck and dragged an elderly man on Broadway and West 96th Street at about 8:15 pm and then, 40 minutes later, a taxi turning onto West 97th Street struck and killed 9-year-old Cooper Stock crossing West End Avenue with his father. Attending a vigil for Mr. Stock, one neighbor is reported to have said, “We want to see action now. It’s very easy to pay lip service to it. Something has to change. No one else can die.â€? New York City’s new mayor, Bill de Blasio, appears to have taken heed. In mid-January, Mayor de Blasio announced he was striking an inter-agency task force that would develop strategies to eliminate deadly traffic accidents, “especially those involving pedestrians.â€? A month later—mid-February—the New York Times reported the Mayor’s release of a 42-page plan “rooted in a Swedish street safety approach known as Vision Zero, which treats all traffic deaths as inherently preventable.â€? The New York Times summarized the highlights of the plan as follows: • Increased NYPD precinct-level enforcement of speeding. • Widening parking lanes to keep delivery vehicles out of travel lanes while double-parked. • Lowering the citywide speed limit from 30 to

25 miles per hour. • Expanding the installation of red-light and speed-tracking cameras that issue tickets • Increasing the enforcement of violations like failing to yield, improper turning or using a phone while driving. • Exploring the use of an automated system that could pause a taxicab’s meter if a driver exceeds the speed limit. • Having the Taxi and Limousine Commission form an “enforcement squadâ€? to focus on dangerous cabdrivers, and begin a pilot program to install “black boxâ€? data recorders in the city’s taxis and limousines. • Having the NYC Transportation Department overhaul 50 intersections and corridors each year to improve visibility and ensure “more predictable movementsâ€?. • Enhancing street lighting at 1,000 intersections. • Installing 250 speed bumps. • Expanding bike paths. Somewhat surprisingly, anti-jaywalking initiatives were not emphasized in the report. The NYPD on its own initiative has reportedly been increasingly active with respect to antijaywalking enforcement issuing 215 jaywalking summonses through February 9th compared with 27 over the same period in 2013. The report focused more on driving violations. As Mayor de Blasio explained, “The central problem is related to our vehicles.â€? And he said, “Our lives are literally in each other’s hands.â€? New York’s new Vision Zero plan grabbed international attention when, two days after its release, a two-vehicle SUV caravan driving Mayor de Blasio to City Hall was reportedly captured on video “speeding, running through a pair of stop signs and not signaling a lane change.â€? The point should be made, however, that the transportation of political leaders often involves security issues that result in driving procedures that are out of the norm, and are directed by police and security officials.

trols all spending within the existing budget and must only get the mayors’ approval for significant new revenue increases to fund major expansions. The letter to Stone also indicates the mayors would reject a referendum if it raises money for basic operating costs. That raises the possibility that mayors might propose some funding sources dedicated to major capital projects that would be subject to referendum, but other sources for operating costs only – like a vehicle levy to improve or at least maintain bus service – that might not go to referendum. Asked if the mayors are trying to reframe the province’s referendum more narrowly to apply only to major capital projects, Mayors’ Council Vice-Chair Wayne Wright of New Westminster said only that the mayors’ council remains formally opposed to a referendum. Wright noted a vehicle levy would be the simplest new source to add and could fund urgent needs while major projects are designed and road pricing options are studied. Moore said a new funding source may be needed to maintain existing TransLink service levels, which could otherwise be cut due to rising operating costs, if a referendum is for any reason pushed back to the next civic elections in 2018. He said covering the rising costs for the service that now exists should not be put to a referendum because defeat means “you could take steps backward and remove service. “If the minister wants to run a referendum on expanding the transportation and transit system, that’s what we’re going to deliver for him – a plan for that. The province’s position is that any new revenue for TransLink that doesn’t come from property tax must go to referendum. Moore said the hope is mayors and the province cut a deal that doesn’t trigger any further delay and a crisis on existing service. Moore said while the mayors recognize the province is going to run a referendum, they have not signed on to lead it and whether they will rally behind depends on how Victoria responds.

Coming home to Fairborne’s Ashbury Hill in Surrey
By Kerry Vital
Craftsman style and nature are combining at Ashbury Hill, Fairborne’s townhome project that offers two- and threebedroom homes at a great price. Located in Surrey’s Panorama neighbourhood, Ashbury Hill continues to demonstrate Fairborne’s commitment to highquality, beautiful homes. “With meticulous planning and attention to detail, Ashbury
Hill has been designed for your comfort with thoughtful layouts and contemporary finishings,” says sales manager Tara Lok. “Ashbury Hill offers tremendous value.” Among the features you’ll find inside are gourmet kitchens with stainless-steel appliances, granite countertops and tons of storage space, luxurious bathrooms with glass accents and large soaker tubs, and laminate wood flooring throughout the main level. The homes share access to a lush protected greenbelt, giving
homeowners a sense of natural, quiet serenity. “Taking inspiration from its surroundings, the design of this community has been driven by the lay of the land, view lines, and the natural landscaping of the surrounding greenbelt,” says Lok. Move-in ready homes start at $289,900. For more information, visit www.ashburyhill.com or call 604-953-1211.
NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

VillageWalk sales manager Angela Jorgenson notes that the community is already garnering buzz in West Maple Ridge. There will be 23 single-family homes in the project, above right, in a range of three- and four-bedroom floorplans.
West Maple Ridge welcomes VillageWalk to the neighbourhood
By Kerry Vital
Quality and location are combining at VillageWalk, an exclusive community of 23 homes that has been garnering plenty of attention from local residents. “People have been waiting for a long time and it’s finally here,” says sales manager Angela Jorgenson. “In just a matter of a few weeks, we’ve had close to 100 registrants expressing interest in the plans and wanting to buy sooner rather than later.”
Developed from a partnership between Woodbrige Properties and local Maple Ridge builder Pivotal Developments, VillageWalk is currently open for pre-sale by appointment only. The show home is expected to be opening in late spring/early summer. However, people have the opportunity to make their selection right now. “The location is one of the biggest selling points so far,” says Jorgenson. “It’s central to everything that’s important, including schools, shopping and leisure activities.”
It’s also just moments from the Golden Ears Bridge, West Coast Express and Lougheed Highway, making commuting very easy from this West Maple Ridge location. The spacious three- and four-bedroom single-family homes are available in a range of floorplans, as well as rancher designs that Jorgenson says are in the process of being designed and have already been the subject of a great deal of interest. “The developers have spent a good deal of time on the plans, ensuring that they are very livable for each of our homeowners,” she says. The homes range from approximately 2,200 to over 2,300 square feet plus basement, built with contemporary Craftsman-style architecture and large patios and decks tailormade for entertaining or relaxing.
Nine-foot ceilings on the main floor contribute to the sense of space, along with oversized picture windows and vaulted ceilings in the master bedroom. The kitchens are fit for a gourmet, with generous over-height cabinetry with shaker-style doors, quartz countertops, a coordinating ceramic tile backsplash and stainless-steel appliances. Recessed pot and under-cabinet lighting perfectly illuminate your tasks. Wide-plank laminate wood flooring is featured throughout the main living areas, along with plush carpeting in the bedrooms and ceramic tile flooring in the bathrooms. Ensuite bathrooms feature their own quartz countertops, along with custom vanities with shaker-style cabinetry. The ensuite also holds a glass shower enclosure with a designer ceramic tile surround, while the main bathroom has a soaker tub as well as a modern ceramic tile tub surround. Full-width mirrors and polished chrome lighting prepare you to greet the day or wind down after a busy week. “We have a great upgrade package, so buyers can customize their home,” says Jorgenson. “People who register with us now can pre-select their home, choose their colour scheme and their lot. And with a location like this in West Maple Ridge, there’s really never been a better time to make that decision.” Homes start at $599,900. For more information and to pre-register, visit www. liveatvillagewalk.com or call 604-465-6524.

Can Toyota’s Tundra ride alongside heavyweight brands like Ford, GM or Ram?
Tugging at the tails of top selling trucks If there is one segment of the auto business that takes dynamite to get people to change brands, it’s the full-size pickup truck category, I’m sure most of us know of someone who is a “Ford guy” or The Tundra is “Chevy diehard” owner, even as capable as and getting him or her to move to a new many of the domestic truck would be almost brands but in some impossible. ways it still has a way It wasn’t until the last to go to truly be an Toyota Tundra was introduced in 2007 that alternative to Ford, Toyota was a real conGM and Ram. tender. That 2007 Tundra and this refreshed 2014 Zack Spencer model are designed, engineered and even built in America, helping to pull loyal domestic buyers away. The Tundra, in comparison, is a bit stark, featuring a hard, simple plastic dash and door pieces that don’t compare. The centre screen is smaller than many competitors are, and the screen embedded in the instrument cluster is small. What has been improved is the overall layout of the centre console. The back seat is massive and flips up with just one hand to make room for interior storage. I found the last Tundra to have a very high seating position that limited headroom. This new 2014 seems to have a better seating position, no longer crimping headroom for taller drivers. Drive Powering the Tundra are two V8 gasoline engines. The base model has a 4.6L V8 with 310hp and 327 lb.-ft. of torque. The larger 5.7L has 381hp and 401 lb.-ft. of torque. This is one area that the Toyota cannot compete; there is no V6 offered and no diesel (Ram only), which the domestic makers do offer. By limiting the available engine options and not having a heavy-duty model that will certainly diminish the
number of domestic buyers willing to give Tundra a try. On the road, I was surprised at just how rough the ride is in comparison to the all-new GM trucks, which really are like driving a big sedan. I would also place the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 a very close second in ride comfort. The Tundra is choppy on rough roads and the noise level is on the high side. Toyota claims to have improved ride quality on this refreshed 2014 model but I am not a fan of the ride. Verdict The Tundra is a capable truck. When equipped it can tow up to 4760 kg, which is on the high side in this class. What surprised me the most was the real “trucky” ride. I have had extensive seat time in all three domestic brands over the past year and I have to say that they are best sellers for a reason – the refinement is rather dramatic. The Lowdown Power: 4.6L V8 with 310hp or 5.7L V8 with 381hp Fill-up: 15.8L/11.0L/100km (city/highway 5.6L) Sticker price: $26,750-$54,000 zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca
Looks As part of the 2014 redesign, Toyota went about setting up a slightly different look for each of its trim levels. Sold as an SR5, Limited and Platinum, each has a variation of the oversized front grille. The wheel openings are now larger and squarer, framing wheel sizes ranging from 18-inches on the SR5 and Limited and 20-inches on the Platinum. The Tailgate has a soft open feature, stopping it from slamming down, that is fantastic but there is no side step or ladder into the bed the way Ford and the new GM trucks have. Sold as a regular car, double cab or Crew Cab, there is a model for most buyers. Inside Just as the outside was redesigned to have a unique character for each trim, the inside mimics this idea. The Platinum model I tested is covered with a diamond pattern, or quilted look used on the leather seatbacks, side door inserts and dash front panel. It

Volvo circles the wagon for success

‘‘ The T5-equipped wagon is a smooth operator in performance and ride... while you won’t burn rubber at the green light; it will take off when necessary.
Keith Morgan
’’
By Keith Morgan Las Vegas, Nevada – Volvo is hitching some of its revival hopes to a wagon – the 2015 Volvo V60 Sportswagon. Its grille is clearly all-Volvo but those typically boxy looks that characterized the make from your dad’s day are gone. In looks it’s a design variation of the S60 sedan and it will be a welcome sight for loyalists of the Swedish brand, having witnessed the demise here of the V50 and midsize V70 wagons. The wagon featured recently along with the S60 and XC60 crossover at a launch event in the Nevada desert. The Volvo execs present proudly talked about their new Drive-E powertrains, developed thanks to the megabucks available now that the company is owned by the Chinese Geely Automotive. Ford ownership may now be retreating in Volvo’s rearview mirror but it is still beholden to the US manufacturer for the platforms upon which these three 2015 models ride. That will change later this year when the full-size XC90 crossover is set to sit atop Volvo’s so-called Scalable Product Architecture platform. Model year 2014 saw a refresh of all three midsize Volvo models showing in the desert so this was truly about the new engines. The Drive-E family of gas, diesel and hybrid (the latter not yet, but soon) engines are built around a single, 2.0-litre four-cylinder powerplant. It’s a brave gamble, worthy of Vegas, when you ponder the XC90 relying on such a small engine. Asked if this were a safe bet, the Swedes just smiled and promised the performance of the four-cylinder configuration will equal their big brothers by using such technologies as direct fuel injection, turbocharging, supercharging and . . . electrification. Here in the Great White North, just the two gas engines will be offered initially – the new turbocharged T5 pumps out 240 horsepower, while the turbo’ed and supercharged T6 adds another 62 horses. By Keith Morgan transmission, will set you back $39,800. Volvos have never been cheap. The other three Sportswagons will continue to use existing powerplants, six-speed automatic transmissions and Haldex all-wheel-drive systems. Did a little shopping off the strip in the XC60, which came into its own, its cavernous rear swallowing up my bulky purchases. I’ll reserve comments on the crossover until I’ve had a chance to put it through its paces in BC.

However, I got much more seat time in the V60 and S60 (S60 with T5 $37,750. T6 $42,850), taking in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Valley of Fire state park and Red Rock Canyon. The T5-equipped wagon is a smooth operator in performance and ride. And while you won’t burn rubber at the green light, it will take off when necessary . . . not that we got any chance to pass in the low speed limit state park! Volvo says it will hit 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds if given the lead foot treatment. (The T6 in sedan tells a slightly racier story. Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating but only a little and I look forward pressing the pedal to the metal where I can legally do so.) The T5 fuel economy ratings fare well in comparison with the market competition – 9.4/6.3/8.1 L/100km (city/ hwy/combined). These numbers are squeezed out of the power plant with the help of the standard engine stop/start system and the efficient new eight-speed transmission, which slips into a neutral coasting mode when you lift your foot off the gas. Inside, the instrument panel stretches the span of the car and features an attractive floating centre console, which mixes good looks with functionality. Swedes are safety conscious, of course, and that means lane change, cross traffic, blind spot warnings and alerts. The front seating is comfortable if a little soft on a long drive. Rear seating ditto and headroom is good despite the coupe-style slope of the rear. And a good view of the road fore, fore aft and side is enjoyed by all. Great stowage room in the rear. The 40/20/40 split second row folds flat to provide enough space to move a small apartment’s furniture. Just kidding but you get the picture. 2015 Volvo V60 Sportwagon T5 FWD Base sticker price: $39,800 Power: 2.0L, 16-valve, 240 hp, turbocharged DOHC I-4, mated to eight-speed automatic Fuel consumption: 9.4/6.3/8.1 L/100km (city/ hwy/combined).

Granny’s Off Her Rocker – again Patti McGregor gears up for a third tour with a March 2 show Black Press PATTI MCGREGOR IS at it again, ready to entertain with her new
one-woman show Granny’s Off Her Rocker. The show, which will take place March 2 in North Delta, features Hawaiian and old Cowboy tunes and includes some of McGregor’s recent original theatre skits – the Clutter Busters and her fractured fairy tale, “Stumpleriltskin” McGregor will use her guitar and percussion instruments to engage an audience’ to present a fun-filled hour for a mature audience.
Working as a professional entertainer over the past few decades, McGregor has worked as a soloist, in duos, trios and quartets. To her, the connection to the music and theatre business is “food for the soul.” In the past, she has done most of her work accompanying herself on the keyboard, but because McGregor plans to take Granny’s off her Rocker on her third road trip to Alberta this summer, she wants to “travel light.” Granny’s Off Her Rocker takes place on March 2 at 2:30 p.m. at the Firehall Centre for the Arts, 11489 84 Ave. Doors open at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Prevent COLDS & FLUS NPN 80036946. To T helps immune function. The only cold medicine with a money-back guarantee. Four medical doctors that wrote in their book SHARK LIVER OIL that you can prevent colds and flus. Dr. Hubert wrote since his own high-school age children took shark liver oil they have no more colds. Dr. Haimes’s grandchildren have been taking shark liver oil for 6 months and he writes they have no more infection of any kind. Read many testimonials on the Bell website: “I had 3-4 flus every winter. None last 5 years.” “Amazing! All of us have no more colds.” “No more asthma, no puffer, no cold, no flus, changed my life”. In North America this is a by-product from the restaurant industry. No sharks are caught for their liver or their cartilage. No more colds, also my eczema disappeared! Last 2 years I would get colds often due to stress as I am an athlete and body builder. After #51 starting Bell Shark Liver Oil #51 I had no more colds or even a sign of a cold. Stem Cell Activator NPN 80035385. Helps to activate naturally millions of stem cells from our own bone marrow. The increase in stem cells released from the bone marrow into the blood stream have the potential to become other types of tissue cells with specialized function. Stem cells will multiply and are able to become heart cells, liver cells or any other organ. Located everywhere in our body, stem cells are even under our skin layered between the epidermis and dermis. This is why an increase in stem cells under our skin may help to create a more youthful cell that would replenish elastin and collagen and thus may make us look younger. If our bone marrow does not produce enough stem cells this can result in many illnesses, especially a weak heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, in fact all healthy functions of our body are decreased. Sufficient stem cells in our body have a great potential of self-repair and the ability to rejuvenate tissues. Women looking for anti#63 aging help! We all want to slow down aging. Bobcats surprised by Crusaders Late rally lifts Holy Cross to a Fraser Valley championship by Rick Kupchuk THIRD TIME was the charm for
FILE PHOTO / THE LEADER
Alli Buck of the Holy Cross Crusaders takes a shot over Jada Jordan of the Fleetwood Park Dragons earlier this season. Both teams have qualified for the provincial championships.
the Holy Cross Crusaders. After losing their two previous meetings with the Brookswood Bobcats, the Crusaders rallied from seven points down in the final four minutes of play to upset the province’s number one-ranked team 69-66 in the championship game of the Fraser Valley Senior AAA high school girls tournament. “We weren’t as ready as we should have been,” said Bobcats player Aislinn Konig. “And this was our third time playing them and we should have known them.” Brookswood won their first meeting with Holy Cross by a comfortable margin, but needed overtime to get their second win a couple of weeks ago. In Saturday’s Fraser Valley final at the Langley Events Centre, the Bobcats led 66-59 with less than four minutes to play, but couldn’t add to their total. Holy Cross, ranked second in B.C., scored the last 10 points of
the game to claim the Fraser Valley championship. Nicole Vanderhelm netted 26 points to pace the Crusaders, and also earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award. Rachel Beauchamp added another 13 points while Michelle Bos scored 11, and both players were named as Fraser Valley first-team all-stars. The Fleetwood Park Dragons placed sixth, winning three of five games. Cyrille Butac of the Dragons was a second-team all-star. Fleetwood Park has also qualified for the provincial championship tournament. Q The Tamanawis Wildcats and Holy Cross Crusaders have qualified for the B.C. Senior 4A championship tournament, after advancing to the semifinal round of the Fraser Valley tournament. The Wildcats, ranked first in the province, trounced the Terry Fox Ravens 77-49 Monday night at Tamanawis Secondary. The same night at Holy Cross High School, the Crusaders stopped the
Pitt Meadows Marauders 79-68. The Wildcats and Holy Cross, assured of a top four finish at a tournament that will qualify six teams for the provincials, tip-off in a Fraser Valley semifinal game Friday night at 8:30 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre. Q The Pacific Academy Breakers placed second in the Fraser Valley Senior AA boys tournament, losing 73-62 to the Southridge Storm in an all-Surrey championship game Saturday night in Chilliwack. Moses Adediran and Iyannu Akindele of the Breakers were first-team all-stars. The Delview Raiders placed third, defeating the G.W. Graham Grizzlies of Chilliwack 98-73 in a consolation final. Jaitan Rana of the Raiders was a secondteam all-star. Pacific Academy and Delview have qualified for the B.C. Senior AA boys high school championship tournament March 5-8 at the Langley Events Centre.

the game, again on the power play, on a goal from blue-liner Kale Bennett. The deadlock last all of seven seconds, however, as Victoria’s Garrett Forster restored his team’s lead with an unassisted marker.

and the second, from Curtis McCarrick, with 44 ticks left on the clock. The home team extended the lead to 3-0 in the second – Jared Lukosevicius scored the team’s second powerplay goal – and Eagles’ Darius Davidson cut the lead to 3-1 with an even-strength goal eight minutes later. In the third, Lukosevicius struck again, with 1:30 left in the game to put the game on ice. As was the case Sunday, Didur was again between the pipes for the Eagles, stopping 37 of 41 shots. The Eagles’ only win of the weekend trip came Saturday in Nanaimo, with the visitors escaping Frank Crane Arena with a 3-1 victory. Anthony Conti – who has now scored seven goals in 18 games since being acquired by the Eagles in January – led the charge with a pair of goals, including one into the empty net. Joseph Drapluk, on the power play, rounded out the scoring. Didur earned the win, stopping 31 shots. With the regularseason schedule now complete, the Eagles – who finished the season with a 25-30-1-2 (wonloss-tied-overtime loss) record – get set to face the Langley Rivermen in the first round of BCHL playoffs. The team will have the upcoming weekend off while the rest of the teams wrap up its remaining games, with the playoffs set to begin the following week.
