Forty-eighth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names Edgewood, on the west side of Lower Arrow Lake, replaced a settlement a little further south known as Killarney or Killarney Landing, although the two were considered synonymous. Killarney appears on Perry’s Mining Map of 1893 and was also referred to in the Nelson Tribune on June 8 of that year: “The government wharf at Killarney Landing ... is being constructed under the superintendence of Bob Henderson.” Although there are several places around the world called Killarney, including the Vancouver neighbourhood, the original is a town in southwestern Ireland that derives its name from Cill Airne, meaning “church of sloes.” The book Just Where is Edgewood suggests: “Henry Slye Mason, a well-known promoter in Victoria, could have been the man that put the name of Killarney on the map.” Mason had land surveyor John A. Coryell lay out two lots for him in 1890. The same book quotes Rose Williams Wright thusly: “We moved from Burton to Edgewood, or rather Killarney, three miles south of what is now Edgewood. Killarney was never more than a landing, no

settlement, no stores, not even a trapper’s cabin.” Precisely when and why the name changed to Edgewood is not clear, but it was before July 1902 when the post office opened. Yet the 1921 BC government sessional papers stated: “Edgewood is a relatively new town, replacing the old townsite of Killarney.” In the second edition of Pioneer Days of Nakusp & Arrow Lakes, Kate Johnson writes that Killarney landing was about two miles south of the Edgewood townsite: “A pioneer named Simpson cut timbers for a wharf at Killarney which was in process of construction when a sudden flush of water from Eagle Creek carried all away except the piling …  This caused the

East Arrow Park Arrow Park was really two communities on opposite sides of Upper Arrow Lake south of Nakusp, originally distinguished by referring to the west side settlement as Arrow Park, and the east side as East Arrow Park. Following the flooding of the Arrow Lakes, the westside settlement became West Arrow Park or Old Arrow Park, while East Arrow Park became simply Arrow Park. The East Arrow Park post office operated from 1913-69, except for a four-month closure soon after it opened. According to the late Bill Laux, East Arrow Park was also known as Redlands, the name of the store there, after Redlands, Calif., where the storekeeper and his wife came from.

However, the New was soon dropped. The old name lives on in the street sign for Killarney Crescent, although it’s misspelled Kilarney.

The City of Trail is flying solo after officially taking over ownership of the Trail Regional Airport from the regional district on Saturday. The cloud cover hovered just above the mountains as Trail city council members, community boosters, airport volunteers and staff gathered at the Trail Airport early that morning, to celebrate transfer of ownership of the 4,000-foot airstrip and small cluster of buildings. Mayor Dieter Bogs arrived and briefly circulated amongst the 50 or so people who had come for the celebration, shaking hands and joking with community members. Between the laughter, balloons, and large celebratory cake it was a festive occasion. The mayor cut the cake and the crowd mingled, collecting draw prizes of complimentary Pacific Coastal swag bags and drinking steaming cups of coffee while chatting. The crowd moved onto the tarmac and mayor and council moved to stand near a spotless, newer-looking snow plow. Bogs said a few words and stripped off a piece of paper covering a new ‘City of Trail’ decal on the door of the machine to the applause of the council and spectators. Bogs then made a brief speech and the crowd was ushered off the tarmac to clear

The Trail Regional BCSPCA understands that nobody plans to lose a pet and it can be a very traumatic experience for your family and the lost pet. Many animals (especially cats) end up at BCSPCA shelters because they have no identification (I.D.). The reality is that as few as 5% of cats and 25% of dogs are able to return to their guardians because they have no form of ID but 95% of animals with visible ID are reunited with their families. The BCSPCA would like to see the number of animals finding their true homes increase.

Check with your city/municipality for more information about licensing and where to purchase one. Most places at this time don’t require a license for your cat, but please check with your city office as cat licenses are becoming required in more places. Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week February 28, 2014

Tip of the Week: We are now in the final stretch to spring and there is a lot happening with planetary activity. Mercury turns ‘Direct’ on February 28 at 6 am PST. Interestingly, the New Moon in Pisces occurs at 11:59 pm PST on February 28 as well. This is the completion of the first of three, 3-week retrograde cycles that occur annually. So, Mercury has now entered its ‘shadow’ or recovery period, essentially retracing its path which extends precisely to Spring Equinox. Spring this year occurs on March 20 at 9:57 PST. As mentioned previously, here and in my New Moon Newsletter (free sign-up on my website), both Mars and Saturn too are poised to turn retrograde on March 1st and 2nd respectively. The retrograde period for Mars is March 1 to May 19th. The focus of this particular Horoscope forecast will devote some attention to the general influences of Mars Retrograde for each sign. While I will elaborate further in coming weeks and in my newsletter, here is the basic gist. Mars is symbolic of action and assertion in the world; it is the verb in the sentence. When retrograde, Mars turns away from the material to fulfill psychological and spiritual needs first and material needs and aspirations become secondary for a while. So as with all retrogrades, we can learn to understand and tune-in to make the most of the otherwise ‘unusual’ energy patterns it indicates. Mars in Libra is the other factor. Libra is one of the most challenging sign positions for Mars. The main challenge is that people tend to be inordinately influenced by others and feel pushed from their own center and generally off balance. Awareness helps to overcome the negative repercussions. Mars has been in Libra since December 7, 2013 and due to the retrograde cycle will be there until July 25, 2014.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

Mars is the planet that governs your sign and with it in Libra, the sign of relationships, you have a clear indication of its influence now and over the coming months. Where you have been quite assertive of late, you will now feel or be moved by circumstances to yield or slow down. This is a time to communicate better, to assert less and to listen more. The time has come to be that much more deliberate in your actions. By slowing down you can actual do things better or make improvements where needed. Yet, be aware of tendencies to be too critical of yourself and others. Take deeper breaths and acknowledge yourself for achievements to date. As well, enjoy more quality time with friends for a while. Mars Retrograde in Libra indicates a time for you to recharge your creative batteries. This is a good time for a review. What have you done, what has worked and what has not been so satisfying? Then affirm that there is only now and next. Reach out to new cultural activities or go on an adventure. Increase your receptivity to others and allow for fresh inspirations. Sometimes we feel the need for added support, perhaps even to lean on others a little more than usual. This is likely to be one of those time periods. Turn within for a while; allow or ask others to take the reins. Perhaps tending to hobbies or home projects will do. A meditative cycle or spiritual retreat might be in order. Either way, make room to be cozy, caressed and comforted. This Mars Retrograde cycle is a call for you to become more sensitive in your approach to others. This includes your attitude and style of communications as well. How can you give more with less, as in less is more? Becoming more patient with yourself, others and circumstances is highlighted. Take and give more breathing room on all fronts. A period of adding to, renovating and or rebuilding existing foundations altogether is a feature of Mars Retrograde for you. Expect to be busy, intend to be steady and avoid comparisons. At best, this will prove to be a very creative cycle. There is even a strong streak of inventiveness indicated. While not exactly whistling while you work, productivity is likely.

Mars is retrograde in your sign along with the Lunar North Node. Together, they are influencing you to be more assertive than usual. Though you may yearn for support, it may not be so available. This could lead you to overcompensate, to even become aggressive. Make extra efforts to trust in and go with the flow. Mars in Libra generally and retrograde specifically will find you digging deeper than usual. This effort will be to clear the past. Hidden anger, resentment, negative memories and other such complexes need to be identified and healed. They block fulfillment in your most intimate relationships and it is time for them to go. The time has come to dream a few new dreams. You might as well because you will be less inclined to act on them, at least over the coming weeks. Stimulating these by way of communications and exchanges with others is ideal and likely. Yet do not be swayed by impulse or the determinations of others, at least not yet. Making key decisions that you feel will significantly affect your future is up for you now. Yet following through will feel all the harder because it means so much. While you may feel frustrated that others are holding you back, look closer and you may discover that it is actually you. Aim to close the gaps from the past so you can advance with confidence. Freedom! The cry for it will get louder over the coming weeks. What you want freedom from or what you want to do with it depend on your situation. Look for opportunities to get away from it all, to travel or retreat. If a getaway is not available, send out a message that you will not tolerate being told or pushed. Yet curiosity will lead you into new experiences. Will you aspire to realize your higher ideals or waste this cycle of opportunity on worry and nervous tension? This is a call to gain a new measure of mastery over your desires and appetites. What hungers haunt you depend on you. Fears of loss, rejection and even death could block and distract you. Determine your higher ideals and make achieving them a central goal.

Number of regional liquid waste options decreased timothy schafer West Kootenay Advertiser

A proposal for a sewage treatment plant in Rossland has been flushed at the regional district level. The regional district’s Liquid Waste Management Plan steering committee has elected not to pursue option three— constructing a waste treatment facility in Rossland—on the docket when it goes to the public for input on funding regional waste treatment later this year. Rossland, through committee member and Regional District of Kootenay Boundary director for the city, Kathy Wallace, had been requesting the option for a new plant in Rossland be looked at again because it was potentially less expensive than option two, to build a completely new plant in Columbia Gardens area. Of the three options being considered – option one is to

upgrade the current site – capital-wise option three is less expensive, said Wallace. But the committee, made up of Trail, Warfield, Area B and Rossland, felt the soil in Rossland was not right – the project could be more expensive to operate and that there was too much bedrock. The city had done some percolation testing in an area that might work for a possible plant and the results proved the soil in Rossland was ‘do-able,’ though not a great result. “I argued that for $5,000 we could do a complete hydro geologic assessment and, if they were right, this conversation was over. But they would not back me up on that,” said Wallace. But the Ministry of Environment said all options going to the public for consultation must have the consent of all participants, and they don’t have Rossland’s, said Wallace.

“Because they would not back me up on that and have that assessment done, I’m not sure the conversation is over,” said Wallace. The motion for the assessment, and subsequently for option three, was defeated—with Wallace in favour—and they instead put through a motion to place option one and two out for public consult. The city proposed construction of a stand-alone liquid waste treatment plant in Rossland and some upgrades to the existing plant in Waneta. Currently, there is a primary treatment plant shared in Waneta called the Columbia Pollution Control Centre. It’s the last primary treatment plant left in B.C. that is going into fresh water. Right now the plant is non compliant with federal and provincial regulations, but the regional Liquid Waste Management Plan planning process that

Grand Forks City Council has recently passed final reading of bylaw 1993, electrical utility regulatory amendment which has raised electrical rates in the city. The City of Grand Forks, which buys electricity in bulk from FortisBC and subsequently sells it to residents, has been notified that sale of power has increased by 3.3 per cent. City staff is recommending electrical rates be raised accordingly as these increases will maintain a rate of 98 per cent of FortisBC rates for residential and a rate

for commercial that is competitive and addresses the revenue requirement ration for usage. “Back in the previous council term, council decided that we would, instead of projecting changes that are coming to using the cost of hydro that we purchase, that we would stay on top of that by changing our bylaw that allowed us to change our electrical rates as they came down from Fortis,” said Mayor Brian Taylor. “We have a policy, a bylaw that says we need to adjust that every time our cost of purchase is impacted. “There was some objection to it, but it clearly went through.”

started in 2008 questioned how to bring that plant up to regulation. The first phase of planning for liquid waste was identification of options and three were put on the table: Upgrading the

existing plant where it is; build a brand new facility for somewhere in the Columbia Gardens area (at that time Fruitvale and Montrose were participating in the process); and a stand alone plant to serve

the Rossland population, but still as a piece of the regional service. Option 3 (for Rossland) was dropped at the end of stage one when Fruitvale and Montrose were still involved in the plan-

ning. After a very formal process to review the service at the request of the City of Trail, in early 2013 both Montrose and Fruitvale decided not to participate in the process.

Welcome to the driver’s seat

Can Toyota’s Tundra ride alongside heavyweight brands like Ford, GM or Ram?

Tugging at the tails of top selling trucks If there is one segment of the auto business that takes dynamite to get people to change brands, it’s the full-size pickup truck category, I’m sure most of us know of someone who is a “Ford guy” or The Tundra is “Chevy diehard” owner, even as capable as and getting him or her to move to a new many of the domestic truck would be almost brands but in some impossible. ways it still has a way It wasn’t until the last to go to truly be an Toyota Tundra was introduced in 2007 that alternative to Ford, Toyota was a real conGM and Ram. tender. That 2007 Tundra and this refreshed 2014 Zack Spencer model are designed, engineered and even built in America, helping to pull loyal domestic buyers away. The Tundra is even as capable as many of the domestic brands but in some ways it still has a way to go to truly be an alternative to Ford, GM and Ram.

‘‘

is a step up from the lower trims but not nearly as supple and luxurious as the new batch of interiors from Ram and GM. Those trucks, in particular, have almost luxury-sedan interiors that make the driver forget they are in a truck. The Tundra, in comparison, is a bit stark, featuring a hard, simple plastic dash and door pieces that don’t compare. The centre screen is smaller than many competitors are, and the screen embedded in the instrument cluster is small. What has been improved is the overall layout of the centre console. The back seat is massive and flips up with just one hand to make room for interior storage. I found the last Tundra to have a very high seating position that limited headroom. This new 2014 seems to have a better seating position, no longer crimping headroom for taller drivers. Drive Powering the Tundra are two V8 gasoline engines. The base model has a 4.6L V8 with 310hp and 327 lb.-ft. of torque. The larger 5.7L has 381hp and 401 lb.-ft. of torque. This is one area that the Toyota cannot compete; there is no V6 offered and no diesel (Ram only), which the domestic makers do offer. By limiting the available engine options and not having a heavy-duty model that will certainly diminish the

number of domestic buyers willing to give Tundra a try. On the road, I was surprised at just how rough the ride is in comparison to the all-new GM trucks, which really are like driving a big sedan. I would also place the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 a very close second in ride comfort. The Tundra is choppy on rough roads and the noise level is on the high side. Toyota claims to have improved ride quality on this refreshed 2014 model but I am not a fan of the ride. Verdict The Tundra is a capable truck. When equipped it can tow up to 4760 kg, which is on the high side in this class. What surprised me the most was the real “trucky” ride. I have had extensive seat time in all three domestic brands over the past year and I have to say that they are best sellers for a reason – the refinement is rather dramatic. The Lowdown Power: 4.6L V8 with 310hp or 5.7L V8 with 381hp Fill-up: 15.8L/11.0L/100km (city/highway 5.6L) Sticker price: $26,750-$54,000 zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Looks As part of the 2014 redesign, Toyota went about setting up a slightly different look for each of its trim levels. Sold as an SR5, Limited and Platinum, each has a variation of the oversized front grille. The wheel openings are now larger and squarer, framing wheel sizes ranging from 18-inches on the SR5 and Limited and 20-inches on the Platinum. The Tailgate has a soft open feature, stopping it from slamming down, that is fantastic but there is no side step or ladder into the bed the way Ford and the new GM trucks have. Sold as a regular car, double cab or Crew Cab, there is a model for most buyers. Inside Just as the outside was redesigned to have a unique character for each trim, the inside mimics this idea. The Platinum model I tested is covered with a diamond pattern, or quilted look used on the leather seatbacks, side door inserts and dash front panel. It

A hooker’s cold weather fun on four wheels

By Alexandra Straub

The man from BMW once called me a hooker. Surprisingly, I wasn’t that offended. I actually laughed at such a descriptor, as did everyone else around me. I didn’t feel so bad because I wasn’t the only one in the group labelled thusly at the brand’s Driver Training; a full day of driving 3 Series sedans (back then) to improve our own car control. I didn’t have too many years of driving experience back then but I unfortunately I had picked up a few bad habits on the road. What’s a ‘hooker’, according to the instructors at the German automaker’s training? Someone who hooks his or her hand into the steering wheel when making a turn. It’s a big boo-boo and not an effective way to drive. It’s also totally unsafe should an accident occur in the process. Needless to say, pointing out the ‘hooker’ in me caused me to change my habits for the better. In other words, be careful where you put our hands so as to not lose control! And in the most recent installment of learning car control with

BMW, no such noun was used when relating to my technique. Thank goodness. It’s minus 15 degrees at the ICAR track in Mirabel, Quebec. The sun is out and there’s a lineup of all-new 435i coupes just begging to be driven. Some are equipped with the brand’s all-wheel drive system. Some are rear-wheel drive. Regardless, I’ll have my way with both configurations by the end of the day, so to speak. The adventure is better known as the Winter Driver Training program, offered exclusively at the ICAR location. That said, you don’t need to own a BMW to participate. Learning car control in less than perfect circumstances is available to all who have $795. In my opinion, it’s money extremely well spent. The day starts out with an in-class session that goes over theory and what will be executed throughout the various exercises. It’s kept relatively short so we have more drive time. It’s mentioned that we’ll be practicing manouevres with and without electronic help, to put both power and performance to the test. continued on page 10

Oh yeah. Proper seating position is outlined when we initially get behind the wheel. Then we’re off. You might ask what is the point behind putting one of BMW’s latest products sideways on an ice track in subzero temperatures. My initial answer is only three letters long and to the point: fun. But that’s only a byproduct of what the impetus behind the program is; a program that started back in 1977 and is now offered in 35 countries. The main goal is safety. It’s to introduce drivers to techniques that might help correct the car if it is not doing what you want it to for whatever reason. For example, if your wheels are pointed in one direction, but your car is going in another, what should you do? Or, if you feel the back end of the car breaking loose, how do you wrangle it in? paces in a safe and controlled environment is the best place to learn. If you spin out, you’re not going to go into oncoming traffic. You just stop, turn the car around, and keep going. You’ll probably giggle a little in the process and tell yourself you’ll “get it next time.” Heck, if you knock over a few cones, no one will judge you either. It’s all part of the process. There are also dynamic braking exercises that teach you how the car reacts when you have ABS, and what you can do in these conditions. You’ll even learn reverse 180s. Philippe Létourneau is the head instructor of the program and says, “People learn a lot more when they’re having fun.” I agree. He also mentions that if people walk away from the course with a couple of newly established driving habits that make them overall a safe driver, that’s ideal. However, if your face doesn’t feel stiff from smiling, or your abs don’t hurt from laughing, perhaps you weren’t trying hard enough. What’s not to like about that?

Drives-UCrazy snow way to drive

Alexandra Straub For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!” Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby. Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit. Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can find her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive. When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either find her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world. While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. And to really help her relax, she scrapbooks. Share your thoughts and requests with Alexandra at alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Where the rubber hits the road matters in tire selection truck tire, the second number is the aspect ratio or height of the sidewall and the third number is the wheel diameter or rim size. The height of your sidewall is important and should be chosen based on the conditions where you drive your truck most often. If you only drive on the street then a low profile truck tire will be fine, but if you go off-roading then you are going to want more tire in between your rim and the ground. That way you will not bottom out on the rims when the tires encounter rough terrain off-

By Ian Harwood

Tires are one of the most important features of the truck when it comes to improving its ride. It is vital to make the right choice and then maintain them so they last for a long time. Before you choose the best tire for your truck, it is essential to understand the terms of the truck tire world. Tires for example are specified in this form - 265/75R/16. The first number is the width of the

road. Wider tires have more contact area with the ground, thus giving your truck a better grip, both on and off road. Your truck’s handling becomes easier because of the bigger tire width. On the other hand, the same wider truck tire will make more noise and may decrease the fuel efficiency of the truck. Wider tires can also slip more when it rains, not that it rains much in Vancouver. The size of the rim is a personal preference. The larger sized rims are popular today. Just make sure

STORE driveway.ca RILKOFF’S Monday - Saturday 9 - 5 Sunday Closed that the rim and truck tire you choose will fit inside the wheel well of the truck, and don’t forget to upgrade your brakes to help stop this increase in weight. The wheel rim width varies from truck to truck. It can be custom made to suit both on and off road driving conditions. The wheel rim width is rounded off to the nearest half inch of the tire. Usually, the best choice is to have the rim width at about 90 percent of the tread width of the tire. The most important safety aspect of maintenance on your truck is to keep its tires intact and in good shape. A blown tire can cause an accident in an instant. The number one cause of the tire wear and tear is incorrect tire pressure. All the tires on the truck should have consistent

air pressure to carry the weight equally. Adequate air pressure is important for a good tire life, handling, and traction. Look through your owner’s manual, on the sticker inside the driver’s door, or look on the tire itself to find the correct air pressure that you need to maintain them. Seasonal changes can affect the air pressure of the tires. Cold temperatures are responsible for dropping the air pressure of the tires, and warm temperatures are responsible for increasing the air pressure. A 10 percent swing in the temperatures causes a 1lb. change in the air pressure. Sudden changes in temperature are a good time to check the pressure of the tires. You can reduce the wear and tear of

the truck’s tires by rotating them often. Rotating the tires, keeps the tread wear balanced and can really help when slippery and wet conditions occur. A simple rule about rotating your tires is to do it on every other oil change. Doing this consistent basis, will make the tires last longer and allow a comfortable ride for many, many kilometres. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

Pick of the Week: Futuristic Kia with butterfly wings

The Kia Niro concept is a futuristic, upscale and performance-inspired hybrid electric drive car designed for urban dwellers. Entry into the vehicle is by way of dihedral “butterfly” doors with flush door handles that swing up high into the roof. Mounted directly onto the side windows are milled “Plexiglas®1” door mirrors with built-in cameras. And at the rear, the large hatch opens to reveal an expansive carbon-fibre-clad cargo deck ready to swallow large quantities of equipment, gadgets, gear or luggage. This concept comes with a variant of Kia’s turbocharged 1.6-liter ‘Gamma’ engine, capable of 160 horsepower. The engine and a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission serve the front wheels while an electric hybrid system powered by regenerative braking delivers up to 45 horsepower to the rear wheels – when road conditions require extra grip. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

The Kia Soul was recently named Best Family Car by Canada’s top automobile journalists. With easy access, no blind spots and plenty of cargo room, the Soul is responsive, accommodating and comfortable. It’s also fuel efficient and gentle on the environment. What you may not know is that its unique design was inspired by an English Bulldog. Charming, isn’t it?

News Seeking creative bike rack proposals NELSON STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser

The City of Nelson is seeking design proposals for bike racks, to be installed in five locations in downtown Nelson. Entries are encouraged to be as creative as possible, while meeting the need for racks that are durable, easy to install, affordable, and use sidewalk space efficiently. The deadline for applications is March 6. Full application details are available at nelson.ca (under the “doing business” tab, click “bid opportunities”) “This is a great opportunity for local artists and designers to explore the world of industrial design,” says cultural development officer Joy Barrett. “Not only are they creating something artistically unique to Nelson, they have to balance form with function. That means a bike rack that is easy to use, lasts a long time, and will hold up under the rigors of use and abuse.” In September 2013 the City of Nelson published its Bicycle Parking Design Guidelines which were developed to encourage more bike parking. According to the 2011 census, 3.8 per cent of Nelsonites bicycle to work, significantly more than the provincial average of 2.1 per cent. This indicates a need for bicycle facilities, and shows there is potential to increase bicycle travel in the city.

One way to help people choose to cycle more and more often is to provide facilities such as excellent bicycle parking. “Providing more bicycle parking is one of several strategies aimed at increasing active transportation options,” says city councillor Donna

Macdonald. “And of course, we want to do that in a creative and beautiful way and support our local artists and artisans.” The City of Nelson’s cultural development committee will oversee the process from adjudication to construction oversight and installation.

“It’s not hard to decipher how this tiny town in the middle of nowhere was voted the best ski town in North America by skiers” - Powder Magazine “Given its setting on Kootenay Lake, in the heart of a mountain range Nelson is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream” - LA Times

“This small town will make you reassess what you think civilization should be like” - The Guardian “Up here, it’s all about community: Networking takes place on the sidelines of the kids’ soccer field, folks tend to boycott big chain stores, and if you choose work over family here, you stick out” - Sunset Magazine
