Thoughts on the Olympics and the fierce patriotic pride it instills As I write this column the men’s TREENA MIELKE hockey team from SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Canada is playing the U.S. in the semifinal game. It is a game lots of people will be watching, even taking time off from work, no doubt. But, I’m here. I’m here in body, anyway. Here I am in this newspaper type little office with a computer screen in front of me, painstakingly tap, tap, tapping the keys and sipping lukewarm coffee from a Styrofoam cup. Mostly, I’m wondering what the score is. As I write this, Canada is now sitting in second place for medal wins. And I am feeling good, great, actually, no doubt, along with Canadians everywhere, that our country has done so well in the medal count. Seeing our country’s Olympic athletics make it to the podium in so many events is good; good for personal and national pride. In fact, more than once during these Olympics I have found myself feeling the urge to yell out the national anthem or at least go buy a sweatshirt with ‘C A N A D A’ splayed across the front in big bold lettering. Years ago, I felt the stirrings of such patriotic pride, but for a very different reason. My husband and I had travelled to Korea to visit our daughter who was teaching in Seoul. We carefully sewed Maple Leafs on our suitcases, which proved to be a great idea. They like Canadians over there. In fact they nicknamed us Mr. and Mrs. Montreal. Obviously they had Canada and Montreal mixed up. Anyway, the Olympics, for me and probably lots of people, has brought back that fierce sense of patriotic pride that is, no doubt, hidden in all of us, somewhere. Mostly I just like the way the Olympics and Canada’s success at the Olympics seems to hover over all of us in a good way; a positive way. My

grandson, who is very wise in the ways of the world because he has reached a wise old age (he is five) has been watching lots of the Olympics on TV with his brother and his mom and dad. After observing some of the events he turned to his mom and said, “we are so lucky we can watch the Olympics on TV and we don’t have to drive all the way to Russia.” With such common sense thinking, the child will go far, I muse. I wish I had watched more of the events myself, but I seem to get all busy trying to be a grown

up and finish my to do list, or at least find it. But, the gym where I go to work out (mostly faithfully) has a TV in front of the treadmill. Every morning as I tread on the treadmill, I watch those amazing athletes on the hills or slopes or wherever they are over there in Russia. And even watching such athletic ability in action inspired me to try a little harder before I collapsed in a pathetic heap of exhaustion which usually takes less than 20 minutes. I understand that watching the Olympics has affected productivity at some work places. I

know this to be true. I’m less productive at the moment, for sure. And the guy at the meeting I was at the other day who was watching the hockey game on his iPhone was definitely not in the room. It’s a Canadian thing. In the end, we give each other a high five, go back to work and say casually, “see you later, have a nice day, eh.” And even if it is 40 below, it’s good. For a brief moment in time, we bask in the victories of our Olympians. And we forget to be cold!

A meeting is called for Sunday, March 4, to be held in the W.I. hall at 3 p.m., to which all veterans of World Wars I and II are invited. The matter for discussion is the advisability of having club rooms for the veterans, and under the chairman-

ship of J. A. Untinen, the Sylvan Lake Improvement Society want all veterans present. The society feels the need for such accommodation and wants the boys to take an initial part in forming the club. ♦ ♦ ♦ P. Duffield turned in his resignation last Saturday as Mayor of the village and notices of a nomination meeting for the office of councillor to fill the vacancy, have been posted. When seen by the News, Mr. Duffield intimated he did not desire to carry on without his former colleague deputy-mayor J. A. Untinen. Pressure of business was also a factor in his decision to resign and now he has taken the step, he felt relief that the problems and worries of office would no longer bother him.

Mr. Duffield and Mr. Untinen have served on the council for a number of years and have given good service to the village. During their terms of office a heavy provincial debt has been liquidated and the village is now in a sound financial position.

It was with great disappointment that members of the Central Alberta Sports and Light Car Club cancelled the car races planned for the lake. The high cost of public liability insurance for this type of event was cited as the reason for cancellation. ♦ ♦ ♦ Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Fisher celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last weekend. They were married on Feb.

25, 1914 in Morton in the Marsh, England. In 1915 they came to Sedalia, Alberta, where Mr. Fisher had been farming. After the coming of the railroad they also operated a store there. In 1942 they purchased Cobbs Ltd. and moved to Sylvan Lake. Here they have taken a great interest in the life of the community. Mr. Fisher was a charter member and president of Sylvan Lake Service Club and has also been active in the chamber of commerce. Both have been interested especially in the musical life of the town. ♦ ♦ ♦ On Wednesday evening last week Sylvan Lake Scouts and Cubs entertained their fathers at an enjoyable banquet held at the school auditorium.

What would you think if your doctor handed you a prescription that recommended filing your tax returns or applying for food or income benefit programs instead of the usual medicines for high blood pressure or diabetes? You’d probably say the physician was nuts. Tax refunds? Food? What do they have to do with making you healthier? I just returned from a month long Fulbright fellowship in Canada and met such a physician, Dr. Gary Bloch, who practices family medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. We had a long conversation about what makes people healthy. He wasn’t interested in talking about new drugs to lower cholesterol hyped by the latest drug salesperson to walk through his door. “We’ve created an advocacy or interventional initiative aimed at changing the conversation about poverty and how doctors think about poverty as a health issue,” Bloch told me. “It’s one of those cultural shift things. My job is to push ideas for physician interventions around poverty.” Bloch showed me a clinical tool used by primary care practices in Ontario that is based on strong evidence linking poverty to bad health outcomes. The tool, a four-page brochure, is simple in design but powerful in concept. “You come at poverty from every possible angle,” Bloch said. “You start from the evidence and frame the issue in language doctors can understand.” The evidence: Page one of the tool points out that “poverty accounts for 24 per cent of person years of life lost in Canada (second only to 30 per

Step 1: Screen everyone by asking, “Do you ever have difficulty making ends meet at the end of the month?” Using the language of clinical tests, the tool says that this question yields a sensitivity of 98 per cent (the ability to predict the number of people with the disease) and a specificity of 64 per cent (the ability to predict those without the disease). Step 2: Factor poverty into clinical decisions like other patient risk factors. The tool provides examples, such as noting that a man living in the lowest quartile of poverty has twice the risk of diabetes as a high income man. Therefore, when a 35-year-old man comes to the office without risk factors for diabetes but has a very low or no income, doctors should consider ordering a screening test for the disease. Step 3: Intervene by asking questions. Here’s where that prescription to file your tax returns comes in. Bloch suggests asking if older patients

I asked Bloch about the impact of his poverty tool, a simple paper brochure, in an age when the press, the public and the medical profession are focused more on shiny, new technology and drugs than the basics of life. He said this approach is “one of those snowball things that keeps rolling”. The Ontario Medical Association will soon publish a poverty intervention tool, and the Canadian Medical Association held town hall meetings earlier this year in several Canadian cities. Participants identified four main social determinants of health: income, housing, nutrition and food security, and early childhood development.

A proposed new firehall tentatively scheduled for completion in the summer of 2015 is planned for Sylvan Lake, but council has not yet given the goahead for a borrowing bylaw for $5 million needed to help pay for the facility. Council, at its Feb. 24 meeting, did not give first reading to the bylaw, which would see them borrow five million dollars from the Alberta Capital Finance Authority or another authorized financial institution. “Council wants additional information,” said Mayor Sean McIntyre. “We have directed staff to come back with more information just to be sure everyone on council is up-to-date on the project.” During budget deliberations council had looked at borrowing $3.3 million for the new fire hall with the first debenture payment of $135,000 being made during the year. (Debenture payments would be $270,000 annually on this debt).

Borrowing $1 million for a new ladder truck is also planned, but that might be stretched into 2015 rather than completed in 2014. The mayor said the price of the proposed firehall came in at $4.626 million in January, 2013, but has now been bumped up to $6.27 million. “The pricing was preliminary,” he said. As well as a $5 million debenture, money for the firehall has been slated to come from a $600,000 grant, $151,181 from reserves and $518,869 from the sale of the current fire hall. Mayor McIntyre said the fire department has out grown the present firehall. “Both the number of volunteer members and the equipment used,” he said. The proposed new firehall is to be located south of the RCMP station on Beacon Hill Drive. “That location presented the best response time now and in the future,” said McIntyre. Council will re-visit the borrowing bylaw later this spring.

In 2011 my church did a walk-athon and then whoever raised the most money won a free trip to the orphanage. Money raised went towards building a church. After we walked, it was announced that I won the free trip. I had raised over $15,000! I was so excited that I was finally going to go to the orphanage. Ever since the beginning of T.O.U.C.H. Ministries, I have been a huge supporter. I had lots of fundraisers and the money went towards the kids

My name is Mikayla and my home is in Uganda, Africa. No, I wasn’t born there nor did I grow up there but my heart is there. I have been to Uganda twice and I absolutely love it there. My church built an orphanage in Ogooma, Uganda. The organization is called “T.O.U.C.H. Ministries” which stands for “The Ogooma, Uganda Children’s Home”.

Chinook’s Edge School Division is taking a proactive approach towards ensuring the safety of its students and staff during inclement winter weather. Vanson and Van Veller approved as street names for Vista subdivision BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS During their regular meeting Jan. 13, Sylvan Lake councillors: • approved names for two streets in The Vista at Ryders Ridge subdivision. Vanson Close is named after Margaret and Noel who moved to Sylvan Lake in 1941. Margaret, a member of Sylvan Lake Women’s Institute, worked at the boathouse in the summer and the Sunflower Cafe in the winter. Noel was a carpenter and helped put up army huts in Red Deer. One winter he helped repair the pier at Sylvan Lake, prior to getting work at the Provincial Training School and hospital. Their four sons worked at the hardware store, Cobb’s Store and Neeley’s Drug Store, according to information supplied by Sylvan Lake & District Archives Association. Van Veller Way is named after Klaas who built a home here in 1985, purchased GTI in 1987, is a member of the Lions Club, and while retired now, still remains an active volunteer. • appointed members to the Business Recruitment Team and approved an operating budget to support them. This left them coming out of the tournament for their age group in first place. Coaches Eric Brinker and Rick Boyes were really happy with the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance. Their defence for the tournament was outstanding and the coaches really commend the girls on their

hard work in practice as it really paid off. The following weekend had our team in Calgary for its first premier tournament of the season with 25 teams from between Red Deer south to Lethbridge. The girls started the weekend in F pool, putting them in about 20th place in the seeding. We lost our first game but then won the next three games in a row, and that put us second in our pool. This placing then put us in division one for the rest of the tournament and our first cross over game was against the winner of the A pool. We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fair very well against this team. The girls had some amazing

returns and saves during the game, but just not enough to pull off a win. We then lost our next two games as well, but again the girls really held their own having not played any teams of this calibre before. In the end, the Sylvan Lake Wave U15 finished tenth out of 25 teams, so they should be very proud of their performance. We must commend them on their sportsmanship and for keeping a smile on their faces. Great job and good luck at the next premier tournament March 15 and 16.

RCMP NOTES

Marijuana and drug paraphernalia seized from vehicle Saturday, February 15th 6:58 a.m. – An 18-year-old Sylvan Lake male is facing charges as a result of a traffic stop on 44th Street in Sylvan Lake. The male exhibited signs of impairment and his vehicle was seized at the scene. He is charged with impaired driving and having a blood alcohol level over .08. 11:58 p.m. – A 911 call was received of a fight in progress at an event at the Best Western Chateau Inn in Sylvan Lake. A wedding was being held at the hotel when an altercation broke out between two females. There were minor injuries sustained and EMS was not required. Neither party wanted charges. Alcohol was a factor in the incident. Sunday, February 16th 7:22 p.m. – RCMP received a request to remove an intoxicated male from the Dairy Queen on 50th Avenue in Sylvan Lake. The male in his thirties was extremely intoxicated and standing by the door holding his shoes. He then left the restaurant and was seen by witnesses walking in the middle of the road heading towards Hazzard County bar. He was located by RCMP members coming out of the bar without his shoes and was lodged in cells until sober.

Monday, February 17th 1:20 a.m. – RCMP on patrol along Highway 11 observed two vehicles stopped on a dead end road on Township Road 384. The member detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from one of vehicles. The occupants, three 16-year-old males, one 16-year-old female and a 20-year-old female, all from Sylvan Lake, were questioned. A quantity of marijuana and drug paraphernalia was seized. Parents of the youths were contacted and advised to transport the vehicles back to their residences. So far a charge of careless driving has been laid against a 16-year-old male. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

from a vehicle which was parked outside an address on Logan Court in Sylvan Lake. The truck was entered into overnight and the inside of the vehicle was ransacked. A wallet was stolen as well as a few other items. The vehicle was locked at the time and there were no signs of forced entry. Thursday, February 20th 8:56 a.m. – Another truck was reported stolen outside a residence in the Sylvan Lake area. A Ford F350 was parked outside an address on Kayton Estates and when the owner returned home, he contacted police advising it had been stolen. The vehicle has yet to be recovered and an investigation is ongoing.

More discussion planned on merits of remote shops for Lacombe County BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

An ongoing debate on the merits of Lacombe County having remote shops in its east and west districts will return to county council for a decision in April. On Jan. 23, county councillors deferred a proposal to implement a business plan that would see one remote shop constructed on the north side of Sylvan Lake on Rainy Creek Road in 2015, and another in the Tees area in 2016 or 2017. Manager of Operations Phil Lodermeier said some councillors required more information before proceeding with the business plan, but he feels it’s just a matter of time before administration receives the go-ahead. “We’ve been planning this for many, many years,” he said. “We actually bought some land for the the remote shop in the west country in 2006, and we’ve been budgeting, and now we have enough money. “I suspect that, being we’ve been budgeting and planning for it, the shops will go ahead at some point in time. I think whether we do it now or whether we do it three years from now is what council is still debating.” If approval is given in April, site preparation on county-owned land at Rainy Creek Road could begin

this fall. Tendering could also take place this year, with construction following in 2015. The shop would act as the home base for Sylvan Lake- and Eckville-area grader districts, and residents of those areas would benefit from improved service levels, according to Lodermeier. “With all the paved roads out in that area right now, what happens is we start here in Lacombe, and they have to drive out there before they start, and then every time they run out of sand, they have to drive all the way back to Lacombe,” he said. “What we wanted to do was have a shop and a salt shed out there, and then that would really reduce the amount of time it takes them to complete their route out in that area.” Two grader operators would likely work out of the shops in summer, while additional winter staff could include a truck driver and a tractor operator, said Lodermeier. Total project costs are estimated at $2,716,255 for the west shop, and $1,811,175 for the east shop. A second east shop may also be considered in the future, although Lodermeier estimated that it could be 10 to 15 years before that one’s constructed, if approved. County councillors requiring more information about the shops were asked to submit questions to administration, prior to further discussion on the matter in April.

Dreeshen announced candidacy for another term in House of Commons BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Red Deer MP Earl Dreeshen has announced he will seek another term in the House of Commons. In a news release Feb. 12, he declared he will run as the Conservative Party candidate to represent the newly formed federal electoral district of Red DeerMountain View in the 2015 federal election. Choosing to run in the Red Deer-Mountain View riding means Dreeshen will no longer represent Sylvan Lake voters. Wetaskiwin MP Blaine Calkins has already announced he’ll run as the Conservative candidate in the Red Deer-Wolf Creek riding which encompasses Sylvan Lake. “I am honoured to let my name stand as the Conservative Party nominee for the Red DeerMountain View riding,” Dresshen said. “Central Alberta continues to be a beacon of growth and prosperity, and I look forward to continuing my role in helping our region achieve its full potential.” Since being elected in 2008, Dreeshen has led numerous trade missions promoting Canada’s interests in growing our economy and highlighting Alberta as a great place to invest. He was a delegate in Governor General David Johnston’s first official state visit to Asia last October. In January, Dreeshen spoke at a 22-country AsiaPacific parliamentary forum outlining Canada’s economic interests in education and agriculture. 5-8 PM He sits on the Agricultural and Aboriginal Affairs committees in Ottawa and has worked closely with Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz on agricultural issues of importance to Central Alberta

farmers, such as the COOL dispute, Western Livestock Price Insurance and transportation logistics. He also sits on the Post-Secondary Education caucus. A founding member of this group, he has toured educational facilities across Canada and has promoted Red Deer College and Olds College, along with their many innovative programs, on both the national and international stage. Dreeshen’s Private Member’s Bill, C-444, An Act to Amend the Criminal Code (Personating Peace Officer or Public Officer) has received unanimous support in the House of Commons and will soon become law. This piece of legislation exemplifies Dreeshen’s support for the rights of victims and will be one of the rare times that a member of parliament has amended the Criminal Code of Canada, said his announcement. “Scrapping the long-gun registry, giving farmers marketing freedom, and protecting victims of crime are some of my proudest moments in Ottawa as a representative for the people of Central Alberta,” said Dreeshen. “I am very excited to work with my great campaign team in the coming nomination,” said Dreeshen. “I truly appreciate all of my supporters of the past and present, and look forward to earning the support of new supporters.”

After hearing from constituents, Wetaskiwin MP Blaine Calkins crafted the Employees’ Voting Rights Act which he tabled in the House of Commons last June. Now it’s coming back to the House of Commons after passing committee stage. The bill proposes to replace the antiquated method of union card check with a secret ballot vote. This will ensure the voice of workers is heard in a clear manner, free of intimidation from either the union or the employer, said a news release from Calkins. “Democracy is fundamental to Canadians and the Employees’ Voting Rights Act provides Canadian workers in the federal jurisdiction with the right to a secret ballot vote,” Calkins said. “It is shameful that the NDP and
