Teachers mindful of student and parents concerns Strike vote won’t impact teaching or learning, Kishkan says

AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Yes teachers will vote on another mandate to strike – no it will not affect parents or students. That’s the message Quesnel and District Teachers Association president Lisa Kishkan said needs to be highlighted.

“There are no plans to close or interrupt teaching or learning,” she said. “This [strike] is designed to add pressure [at the bargaining table] without impacting parents or students.” B.C. teachers will vote March 4 – 6, B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Jim Iker announced Tuesday, after a “lack of prog-

At the crux of the strike vote, Kishkan said, is government’s failure to bargain in good faith over class size and composition. “Classes are getting bigger and bigger,” she said. “Our district does an mazing job with less and less. We have amazing teachers putting in

more and more hours but they’re getting so tired.” The strike vote, Kishkan, said will hopefully push government to reinstate class size and composition language from their original collective agreement. In 2001, legislation removed the language from the agreement. “That language protects

students as much as it does teachers,” Kishkan said, pointing to additional supports in the classroom and an increase in one-on-one time with students and teachers. “We want to reassure parents that we will consider all job action options and timing very carefully,” she said. “All job action will de-

We feel this action is our only recourse.” A strike vote decision is expected to come down on the evening of March 6.

Everybody wants financial security when he or she retires, and many Canadians are counting on employer pension plans to provide that security. But there’s a growing possibility that your pension may not provide the retirement income you need. There is a growing trend toward defined contribution pension plans. These are registered pension plans that specify the employee and employer contributions but not the amount the employee will receive at retirement. Payout amounts from these plans are based on the returns earned by their investments. If the investments perform well, you could have more income than you expect; if they underperform, you could be left short. Defined benefit pension plans are different from defined contribution plans. In a defined benefit pension plan, the employee knows, in advance, how much he or she will receive at retirement, and contributions are based on the employee’s salary and length of service. Defined benefit plans were once the norm in Canada. However, most new pension plans are of the defined contribution type, and many existing defined benefit plans are being converted. Members of defined contribution plans can usually choose how to invest their plan contributions. Participants are provided with tax-sheltered investment options ranging from conservative to higher growth. Their contributions are pooled with those of other plan members and invested by professionals. Companies prefer defined contribution plans because employers aren’t required to pay fixed benefits when investments perform poorly, as is the case with defined benefit plans. This shifts risk from the employer to the employee. For example, those who choose a growth option that invests largely in equities could suffer if the stock market has a few down years immediately before they retire. Even defined benefit plans have risks. Many of these pension plans are underfunded and could fail to meet obligations to employees. This can be because of poor investment returns or the employer’s inability to make contributions. How can you protect yourself from the possibility of less pension income than you’ll need? The best strategy is to have other sources of retirement income. Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs): If you belong to a pension plan, your yearly RRSP contribution room will be reduced by a pension adjustment. However, you may still be able to build considerable RRSP wealth before retirement. That wealth can provide additional income. Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs): Consider taking advantage of the Tax-Free Savings Account, which can provide you with tax-free income during retirement. Every Canadian age 18 or older can contribute up to $5,500 per year to a TFSA. Non-registered investments: If you have used your available RRSP and TFSA contribution room, consider holding your investments in a taxable investment account. Although your investment income is taxable, capital gains and dividends from certain Canadian companies may provide you with some tax advantages. Remember, however, that dividends can be increased, decreased or eliminated at any point without notice. If you are interested in ways to boost your retirement savings, meet with an Edward Jones advisor to see which options best fit your needs and goals.

Local government terms going to four years

TOM FLETCHER Black Press Winners of next November’s local elections will serve four years on councils and school boards. Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Coralee Oakes said Tuesday she will introduce legislation shortly to extend local government terms from three years to four. The change is to take effect in time for elections next fall. Oakes said the change comes after the Union of B.C. Municipalities supported it at their convention last September. The issue has been debated

many times and has been divisive over the years, with some rural politicians arguing against extending the commitment for jobs with little pay. Oakes, who served two terms on Quesnel city council before being elected to the

B.C. legislature last year, said she had her own doubts about it when it was debated during that time. But she has made up her mind. “The reason why provinces across Canada have moved to four years is it provides greater certainty in communities to move those very important projects forward, things such as infrastructure improvements,” Oakes said. “It provides opportunities for local government officials to understand their projects and to carry them through.” The change would mean the next municipal

election would be held in 2018, on a schedule that follows provincial elections by one year. Oakes said there was no intent to avoid having both elections at the same time and she is acting in response to the UBCM’s vote to go ahead. Asked if the legislation would include a “Rob Ford clause” to remove politicians who misbehave while in office, Oakes said the ministry is examining changes to the oath of office to “provide more tools” to deal with such situations. Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Coralee Oakes will introduce the legislation.

New marijuana laws stink

n the spring of 1997, four days before his 20th birthday, my new friend Bob Raven was goofing around at Pioneer Park in Kamloops, playing volleyball and having fun with his buddies when he decided to join some of them in the lake. Without thinking, the college student ran down the dock and dove in to what he later found out was less than three feet of water. He felt his neck break instantly. Lying face down, motionless, he wondered how long it would take his friends to notice he was paralyzed. Not wanting to be moved for fear his situation could get worse, he was supported in the cold water for over an hour before the ambulance finally arrived. By then the local newspaper was already there, and he was their front page story the next day. He spent the next two months at Vancouver General Hospital before being admitted into GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, where he would begin learning to live his life as a quadriplegic. After plummeting from 160 lbs down to 105, he started using marijuana to help regain his appetite and

On A Brighter Note dull his pain and spasms in order to get through the day and sleep through the night. “It was a natural way for me to get off most of the heavy prescription pills I was on,” he said. “Before my accident I had always been healthy and I wanted to keep living as well as I could. I didn’t want to be addicted to drugs like morphine.” Four years ago he attained a license to cultivate his own cannabis, and with the aid of his helpers he’s been able to medicate himself sufficiently by grinding it down and either vaporizing it, putting it in capsules or using it in his baking so he reaps the healing benefits without getting high. New regulations that the Canadian government is about to implement will change all of that. As of this April people

to grow my own medicine,” he said. “But there are doctors out there willing to write up prescriptions for way more plants than one person actually requires.” He isn’t against federallyapproved suppliers, he just wants to see a combination of options so people who aren’t abusing the system can continue to safely grow their own, and those who aren’t able will have access as well. “Big illegal grow-ops on the news have much of society thinking pot gardens are dangerous,” he said. “It takes the same electrical equipment to grow tomatoes that it does marijuana, and with my intent and limited supply, there’s nothing unsafe or corrupt about it.” Bob is now hoping B.C. lawyer John Conroy’s class action lawsuit against Health Canada has these new changes declared unconstitutional, and the new regulations will be overturned. I am hoping the same. For more info: JohnConroy.com/ mmarcoalition Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. She can be contacted at LoriWelbourne.com

like Bob, who are legally allowed to produce their own pot for medicinal purposes, will now have to buy it from a federallyapproved supplier at a much higher cost. “It won’t just be more expensive,” he said. “It will be an inferior product delivered dry through Canada Post. I can’t imagine they’ll be able to keep up with the demand or retain our privacy. People will be forced to break the law by continuing to grow their own, or they’ll buy from illegal suppliers willing to sell it cheaper and more discreetly.” Frustrated there’s still such a stigma regarding marijuana, despite its proven therapeutic impact, Bob believes these new regulations come down to politics and money. “The only people happy with this change in law are the ones who will monetarily profit from it,” he said. “It will only hurt people like me.” Recognizing there is a crime element that needs to be controlled, Bob thinks the government should simply limit the number of plants per person. “With my prescription I only have access for enough

ig Brothers Big Sisters of Quesnel is busy planning their annual Bowl For Kids Sake on Sunday, April 27. The theme for it this year is Hillbilly Hoedown. The major sponsor of the event, Via Rail, has donated round-trip tickets from Prince George to Jasper for four people and one lucky participant will win this fabulous prize. Lane sponsors to date are West Fraser Mills, Wright Choice, Cariboo Pulp, United Steelworkers Union Local I-424 and Cariboo Ford. Five more lane sponsors are needed. Give Joanie a call, at 250-992-7257, to learn more about how you can contribute. Teams are needed! You can register and collect pledges online at bigbrothersbigsistersofquesnel.ca. SHARING A LITTLE MAGIC collect pledges and come out and bowl at Rev Bowling Lanes. For every $100 collected in pledges per person (19 years and older), your name goes into the incentive draw. If you are unable to play, you can still pledge or send a tax-deductible donation. Our agency served more than 205 children/youth in the community last year. There are many children who would like to have a mentor. The funds raised from this event help us sustain our mentoring programs in the community and in the schools. The first semester of Teen In-School Mentors wrapped up last month.

One Teen In-School Mentor’s comments: “I like this program because it helped me to know how to get a good relationship with a kid. I totally changed my mind about kids. First I thought they are hard to deal with, but after the program I found that they were not that hard to deal with. I had a great time with my little buddy. I felt like he is my brother. We played games, basketball and a lot of sports together and I really enjoyed spending an hour a week hanging out with him. If I can do this program again, I will do it for sure.” We need 150 dollars’ worth of pennies to reach our goal of $1,000. If you have pennies to donate, please drop them off at 368 Vaughan Street. Thank you to all the community members who regularly donate to us. Maggie Bello is executive director of BBBSQ and a regular Observer columnist.

Obituary Tribute

GORDON LAWLOR Oct. 22, 1924 - Jan. 31, 2014

It is with deep sadness that the family of Gordon Lawlor announces his passing on Jan. 31st, 2014 in G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital, Quesnel. A Celebration of Life will be held on May 3rd at Bouchie Lake Hall - 2:00pm. Gordon was born on Oct. 22, 1924 in Comox, B.C. He was the 5th of 12 children and lived on a small farm. He learned his love of horses early from his dad who taught him how to harness and work a team. After his father died, he left home at 15 and worked nearby farms and ranches for room and board. The army looked good to Gordon - not just for survival but for adventure, so he enlisted and fought in WWII. While in combat he was injured so was hospitalized for over 5 months in London. There he met and married our mom, Bunny. After the war, the new couple lived in Campbell River, then moved to Quesnel in 1949. Dad’s many occupations ranged from gravel truck driver, working in a logging camp, owning his own logging truck and commercial fisherman. Dad retired at the early age of 43 and our family moved to a small acreage in the Bouchie Lake area. There he cleared the land, raised beef cattle and dairy cows. He loved his large garden and whenever

we ate T-bone steaks, fresh vegetables, berries, our own fresh cream and milk - we would hear dad say “This is the life.” The activities dad enjoyed were walking 2.5 miles a day with his faithful old dog Cody, no matter what the weather and keeping his new place on the Pinnacles Road neat and parklike. Even in his last years he lived independently and took pride in chopping his own wood. He tried to make daily visits to Rocky’s Store to visit with his coffee buddies. Many will miss his old red Ford parked there with his dog waiting for him and for his next lump of sugar. But most of all, dad was a cowboy through & through and he loved his horses. He talked often about which new trail he wanted to explore with his horse loving friends and his daughters. He was known for his good sense of humor and sharp tongued wit. Young and old - he was friends to all. Dad enjoyed the beauty of nature and any animals he would meet on his well trodden trail. Gordon will be forever loved and missed by his daughters Lianne Lawlor of Williams Lake; Cheryl (Doug) Lansdell; his 3 grandchildren - Jillian Wade, Tyson and Taylor Lansdell; his brother Sonny (Elaine) Lawlor. Gordon was predeceased by his 2 sons Gerald Richard and Robert Gordon Lawlor. The family would like to thank all those who sent flowers, cards & phone calls. Special thanks to the nurses long hours of care at the hospital.

Golden Centre sends health care resolutions to convention

T

hree resolutions of interest to seniors everywhere were passed by the OAPO Br. 77 at the Golden Centre this month. Ruth Scoullar attended the monthly meeting and said the resolutions have to do with the quality of health care in our province. The three will be considered and brought forward at the annual provincial convention of the Old Age Pensioners’ Association in Agassiz in June. The first resolution has to do with the cost of health care and the need for universal health care in B.C. as it is in other provinces. The second resolution concerns the quality of health care where recovery needs must be met before a patient is discharged from

Mary Ann Sturdy and Susan MacNeill

Shoot the breeze

the hospital. The third is a request that the level of care for assisted living, supportive, or proprietary care be brought to a level that it once was in British Columbia. Bouchie Lake Seniors’ Luncheon The Annual Seniors’ Luncheon at the Bouchie Lake Hall has been postponed. Tax Tips for Seniors Pat Morton has a few important tax tips for us seniors. She writes that if you are including interest income on your tax return and have not maximized a Tax Free Savings Account you

should ask your tax specialist if including the interest affects you in any way. Instead of keeping all your prescription receipts from your pharmacy just request a statement at the end of the year. If you have a free miner’s license and do some gold panning or if you have claims that cost you, consider the Mining Tax Credit. In our area it provides for a 30 per cent refundable tax credit of the allowable expenses. The Gold Pan Grannies Are you searching for a worthwhile cause to support? How about helping to lessen the tremendous burden placed on many African grandmothers. According to the World Health Organization, 35 million people have

died of AIDS so far, with 1.7 million people dying of AIDS-related illnesses worldwide in 2011. By far, the bulk of the deaths have occurred in Sub-Saharan Africa. African grandmothers are central to the life of their communities. With almost no support, African grandmothers have stepped forward to care for millions of children orphaned by AIDS. They display astonishing reserves of love, courage and emotional resilience, even while grieving the loss of their own adult children. What does this have to do with us in Quesnel, you may well ask? Grandmothers Helping Grandmothers is an initiative started some years ago in Canada and administered by

the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Here in Quesnel, there is an active group of grandmothers (and others) who are actively fundraising to help their African counterparts. Every year, thanks to the support from this extremely generous and giving area, the Gold Pan Grannies raise an amazing amount of money to send to their African counterparts, helping to lessen the burden of those worthy women. On Feb. 23, a fun Scrabble Tournament was held to raise money; coming up in the spring are two activities: a plant sale at the Farmers’ Market and a garage sale. Every Christmas, the Quesnel Gold Pan Grannies are hard at work baking shortbread and making the special

African Angels to sell. If you are interested in this very worthy cause, please contact Joan McNaughton at 250-992-7485. The Gold Pan Grannies meet once a month,

with the next meeting, March 11 at 3 p.m. in the St. John’s Anglican Church Hall. Mary Ann Sturdy is a senior and a regular Observer columnist.

Understanding how recreational services are managed and how decisions are made

W

ith the public consultation process getting underway for the new arena project, this may be a good time to remind people that most of the recreation services in the North Cariboo are regional, delivered in partnership with the Cariboo Regional District (CRD), and not a city service. North Cariboo Recreation and Parks, or

Sub-Regional 1982 when they Recreation, built the indoor includes the swimming pool. operation of At that time, the Arts and the Recreation Recreation Centre was the Mary Sjostrom Centre, the Twin only regional MAYOR’S MESSAGE Arenas, Alex recreation Fraser Park facility in the and a number of rural North Cariboo. The city recreation properties, owned and operated all including community of the other recreation halls and parks. The CRD facilities within the city formed the Sub-Regional including the arena, parks Recreation service in and ball fields.

In the late 1980s, many of the services merged in order to support the referendum for the arts centre, Arena 2 and the agriplex and stadium in Alex Fraser Park. The three major centralized recreation facilities are now jointly owned by the city and CRD. The North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee (JPC), not Quesnel City Council, governs the North

Cariboo Recreation and Parks service. The JPC is made up of the seven members of council and the four northern directors of the CRD. In addition to the JPC, there is also a Recreation Commission that provides input to the JPC on the operational issues of existing facilities and services. It may seem like a complicated system but

the most important thing for the community to realize is that most of our recreation facilities and services are CRD services managed by the city and governed by JPC. If you have a question for Mayor Mary Sjostrom, e-mail it to us at newsroom@ quesnelobserver.com and we’ll forward it to the Mayor so she can answer it in an upcoming column.

The QYSA invited the PGYSA out to the local arena to celebrate the slow change from the indoor soccer of winter and the el fresco summer sport. Hitting the bronze bullseye

Twin Rivers duo encouraged to aim higher after games JONAS GAGNON Observer reporter Quesnel Two River Archers sent a duo of girls down south to represent zone 8 at the B.C. Winter Games, one of who came back with new jewelry. Denise Galloway and Kendra Scheck took on the best from around the province after qualifying in Prince George. Galloway came away from the bronze after four days of shooting in Mission, but both brought back a great experience in competition. “Walking away with the experience was the best thing – it was something else to share with people, the memories and a place from which you can strive from to make yourself better,” Galloway said. Both girls went down with high hopes, with Scheck having taken first in qualifying in Prince George. But

Coming out of the competition with a

push to move forward and continue on in their chosen sport comes from their great attitude going into the games, which Schick learned from her brother, who had participated in the games himself. “Have as much fun as you can even if you’re not a winner,” Scheck summed up her attitude. The games also gave coach Cathy Schaefer more experience, which she thinks will be helpful to better train archers and equip them for big competitions going forward. The next big competition, the really big one anyway, is the Canada Winter Games coming up in Prince George early next year. Galloway and the club have their eye on the event, as an event like this doesn’t get much closer to Quesnel than this, and Schaefer has her eye on a few of the young archers she thinks may just have what it takes to get there.

All three Thunders headed for provincials

All three Thunder teams have qualified to make provincials last weekend. The midget Thunder fought a close battle Saturday in the first of two games against the Cougars. Quesnel opened up the scoring in the first five minutes of play, but the Cougars were quick to rally, tying the game up four minutes later to keep the game interesting going into the second. Once again the Thunder were quickest, netting a go ahead goal within the first two minutes of play. But the Cougars responded hard and fast, netting three goals in the last half of the period to give them a commanding 4-2 lead. With a minute and a half left in the second, the Thunder notched another goal, putting the Cougars well within their sights.

A fourth goal for the Thunder midway through the third tied the game up all the way through to overtime. The Thunder once again scored first, giving them the 5-4 victory in OT. The second game, the Thunder found it easier going. The Cougars were first out of the gate, scoring just over two minutes into the period. The Thunder responded a minute later, rounding out the period’s scoring. In the second, the Thunder took over the game, getting one early and one late in the period putting them up two on P.G. The Thunder weren’t satisfied with the two-goal lead, though, and continued to push, netting themselves another pair. In between the two Thunder goals, the Cougars finally

managed to get their second of the night at the midpoint in the period, but it wasn’t enough as the Thunder pulled away 5-2. Mats Phillips, Ian Jarvis and Joel Amundson were prolific on the weekend, scoring eight of the five Thunder goals over the course of the double-header. Meanwhile, the pee wee rep Thunder faced off against 100 Mile House. The Thunder got off to a fast start scoring three times before 100 Mile House was able to notch their first point with just over five minutes left. The Thunder scored in the first five minutes of the second to widen the gap, but 100 Mile House returned it after around eight minutes of play. The Thunder replied in the last five minutes pushing slowly away.

Mushing’s in their blood JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter First and second, with one kennel and one name between them, father and son team Warren and Sam Palfrey honoured the family name and history with terrific performances at the Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race in Prince Albert last weekend. Warren crossed a lonely finish line at 5:23 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 21 to claim his victory, after 60 hours of mushing through temperatures as low as -30, interspersed with a couple mandatory breaks and some fitful sleep. “I had a flawless race, strategy– and dog–wise everything came together for me,” said the elder Palfrey. Eight hours later and down five dogs from the 12 all the competitors started with, Sam crossed the line at 1:43 a.m., with his father in the crowd urging him on. The race covered 520 kms, from the heart of Prince Albert Sask. up to La Range. Going into the race, the team had high hopes, with first and second place well within their sights. During the race, mushers had to create a strategy of when to stop and how long to stop, resting both their dogs and their selves. Despite the rather open nature of the race, Warren was sure of his position up front during the race. “I knew exactly where I was because there were no tracks in front of me,” he said.

He was also certain that his son was sitting back in second during the race, he sad. The race featured one mandatory rest stop and a floating rest stop that could be taken at any number of check points along the way Warren’s a long time musher, with a couple runs at the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest under his belt and a kennel of dogs he brought his son Sam up around, which gives Sam his own long history with the sport. Outside of his formative life spent around dogs and sleds, Sam has his own history with the sport, including a win at last year’s Caledonia classic that he will soon be back in Ft. St. James to defend. The father/son team had teamed up with American musher Jessie Royer, putting together the two kennels to make a super-kennel, the A-team of which Royer has up north to take on the Iditarod, while Warren and Sam took the B and C team respectively. Warren has equally high hopes for Royer up in Alaska, running the Iditarod. “She’s a heck of a musher and last year she was in the middle of the pack,” Warren said. “So this year we have hopes for her. There’s always the potential to win.” Warren will join Jessie up in Alaska, though as race official, not a musher. It will be his second time as a race official for the event, a position in which he liases between staff at checkpoints to make sure the race is running smoothly.

In the third, a trio of goals from the Thunder, spread out across the period, met with a duo of 100 Mile goals widened the lead for the Thunder to the 8-4 win. In the second game, the Thunder started nearly before the clock, notching a point in the first second of play. 100 Mile house put their lone goal in the sixth minute off play, but the Thunder netted another goal in both the second and third for the 3-1 win. S. Inwood scored four of the Thunder’s points over the weekend, including a natural hat trick, separated only by the intermission. The Bantam Thunder tore apart the Prince George Cougars in their first meeting Friday, scor-

ing five goals without a response from Prince George in the first period. The two teams traded goals in the second, but the lead was too much for the Cougars, as they settled back in for a third that was all Thunder, for three points to make it a 9-1 win. Their second goround was much closer, as Prince George scored early, within the first couple minutes, and stayed out ahead for nearly 17 minutes, until the Thunder tied it up. Neither team managed a point in the second, pushing it to a tie third. But the Thunder scored on early and one late, while keeping the Cougars from doing anything affective, leading to the 3-1 win

n the feature match, held during the final week of the XXII Olympiad it was Blue Collar playing the role of Canada with Serenity looking a lot like Sweden as BCS’s 6-1 victory moved them into first place for the first time since week five. As has been the case in Blue Collars mid season surge, which has them at 9-0-1 the past 10, was well balanced scoring and team defence. Two of their role players, Nathan (The Last) Strand and Brian (The Dominator) Domreis both scored goals Steve Dodge thanks to their PAPERBACK WRITER courage to go into the dirty areas and swat at the vulcanized disc. Not to be outdone by the plodders were fleet footed forwards Chad (The Comet) Swanson and Jason (Junior) Johnson who both had three point mornings. Replying for the Builders was Wade (The Blade) Fenton who, despite the slide his squad is immersed in, continues to score at an alarming rate. The contest between Bear and the Rivermen didn’t have the pomp and circumstance of the ‘Tussle under the Timbers’ but it did have some electrifying moments none the less. Providing several of them was the Red Clad Bear defence who played like Canadian Women and were proud of it! Opening up the scoring for Bear with his first in 53 weeks was Dstay at home D-Man Richard (Prince) George who deftly stole the puck just inside the GM blue line and then made several gorgeous moves before sliding it into the yawning cage. Not to be outdone in the hero department was Chris (Haymitch) Hayman who was jolly on the spot with one second on the first half clock to send his mates off the ice in an elated mood. The second half saw more of the inspired play from (Haymitch) as he assisted on tallies by (Captain) Dan Lowndes and Brody (Howdy) Neighbour who scored the winner. Somehow both squads managed to keep the opposition’s top scorer off the scoreboard and it was (Sugar) Shane Baker who dazzled for the Chevy Crew as he scored a pair and added an assist on (Mad) Mike Ingram’s fourth of campaign. Unfortunately for Fraser River their losing streak now extends to 10 as they just can’t wait for spring freshet to arrive. This week in Season 3 (1997): Red saw red against Green in an 8-7 win as Lorne (Green) Walker had the Hat trick and Rick (Howard) Hughes had a goal and an assist from the Blue line. Darren (Vintage) Vinek had a three point morning in a losing cause. Steve Dodge is a defensive winger with Bear Communications and an Observer contributor.

The dining room is spacious enough for guests to join the family and enjoy dinner with ease – and to step out to the patio overlooking the garden. The kitchen is well designed to suit a house of this size and includes a pantry and plenty of countertop and cupboard space. A pass-through leads to the laundry room, which has its own small covered porch and access to the house – a practical way to keep foot traffic away from the living areas. Behind the laundry room is a three-piece bathroom with a bath and a shower stall. A staircase leads to an unfinished bonus room above the garage – a large, rectangular room with a sloping ceiling which would make an ideal media and games area. The master suite on the main floor is privately separate from the family bedrooms upstairs. The en-suite bathroom includes a soaker tub, shower stall and double vanity. The upstairs hall overlooks the foyer below and serves to separate bedroom two and a four-piece bathroom from bedrooms three and four. All the upstairs bedrooms gain character from attractive dormer windows. The veranda, columns with stone accents and the dormers add to the considerable charm of the exterior. The house is 70 feet, 4 inches wide and 40 feet deep with 2,194 square feet of living space. Plans for design 6-4-344 are available for $755 (set of 5), $860(set of 8) and $944 for a super set of 10. February 2014 A Tribute to Alex Fraser in 1916, a man was born of fame, Alex V. Fraser became his name. It’s his story, I’m about to tell, Of the “Cariboo Man” that you all know well. In 1940, he married Gertrude Watt, Living in Quesnel, which they really liked a lot. They adopted a daughter, Bonny Joy is her name, A foster child, Louise, to their home also came. Elected “Chairman of the Village” in 1951, Little did he know, the legend he’d become. This village kept growing till 1958, The title changed to “Mayor”, a step he’d proudly take. More duties he took on, 68 and 69, He chaired the C.R.D. a job he did real fine. Provincial Politics then came his way, He resigned as mayor, to become M.L.A. When ‘75 rolled around, the Premier did say, You know your job so well, we’ll give you the highway. In 1978, to add to the frustration, They added to Highways, the word Transportation. Paving and grading and new road construction, The great Coquihalla was quite a production. Many bridges and roads are part of his splendour, The boats and the ferries were also his tender. Alex knew the people, he’s been to every place, He greeted them with dignity, and met them face to face. Alex liked the rodeo, especially Anahim Lake, He always looked forward to that summertime break. Alex’s done a lot for all the people here, He’s a friend to all, something we’ll hold dear. Alex made a friend, no matter where he went, You really are a hero, right from heaven sent.

Welcome to the driver’s seat

Can Toyota’s Tundra ride alongside heavyweight brands like Ford, GM or Ram?

Tugging at the tails of top selling trucks If there is one segment of the auto business that takes dynamite to get people to change brands, it’s the full-size pickup truck category, I’m sure most of us know of someone who is a “Ford guy” or The Tundra is “Chevy diehard” owner, even as capable as and getting him or her to move to a new many of the domestic truck would be almost brands but in some impossible. ways it still has a way It wasn’t until the last to go to truly be an Toyota Tundra was introduced in 2007 that alternative to Ford, Toyota was a real conGM and Ram. tender. That 2007 Tundra and this refreshed 2014 Zack Spencer model are designed, engineered and even built in America, helping to pull loyal domestic buyers away. The Tundra is even as capable as many of the domestic brands but in some ways it still has a way to go to truly be an alternative to Ford, GM and Ram.

‘‘

is a step up from the lower trims but not nearly as supple and luxurious as the new batch of interiors from Ram and GM. Those trucks, in particular, have almost luxury-sedan interiors that make the driver forget they are in a truck. The Tundra, in comparison, is a bit stark, featuring a hard, simple plastic dash and door pieces that don’t compare. The centre screen is smaller than many competitors are, and the screen embedded in the instrument cluster is small. What has been improved is the overall layout of the centre console. The back seat is massive and flips up with just one hand to make room for interior storage. I found the last Tundra to have a very high seating position that limited headroom. This new 2014 seems to have a better seating position, no longer crimping headroom for taller drivers. Drive Powering the Tundra are two V8 gasoline engines. The base model has a 4.6L V8 with 310hp and 327 lb.-ft. of torque. The larger 5.7L has 381hp and 401 lb.-ft. of torque. This is one area that the Toyota cannot compete; there is no V6 offered and no diesel (Ram only), which the domestic makers do offer. By limiting the available engine options and not having a heavy-duty model that will certainly diminish the

number of domestic buyers willing to give Tundra a try. On the road, I was surprised at just how rough the ride is in comparison to the all-new GM trucks, which really are like driving a big sedan. I would also place the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 a very close second in ride comfort. The Tundra is choppy on rough roads and the noise level is on the high side. Toyota claims to have improved ride quality on this refreshed 2014 model but I am not a fan of the ride. Verdict The Tundra is a capable truck. When equipped it can tow up to 4760 kg, which is on the high side in this class. What surprised me the most was the real “trucky” ride. I have had extensive seat time in all three domestic brands over the past year and I have to say that they are best sellers for a reason – the refinement is rather dramatic. The Lowdown Power: 4.6L V8 with 310hp or 5.7L V8 with 381hp Fill-up: 15.8L/11.0L/100km (city/highway 5.6L) Sticker price: $26,750-$54,000 zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Looks As part of the 2014 redesign, Toyota went about setting up a slightly different look for each of its trim levels. Sold as an SR5, Limited and Platinum, each has a variation of the oversized front grille. The wheel openings are now larger and squarer, framing wheel sizes ranging from 18-inches on the SR5 and Limited and 20-inches on the Platinum. The Tailgate has a soft open feature, stopping it from slamming down, that is fantastic but there is no side step or ladder into the bed the way Ford and the new GM trucks have. Sold as a regular car, double cab or Crew Cab, there is a model for most buyers. Inside Just as the outside was redesigned to have a unique character for each trim, the inside mimics this idea. The Platinum model I tested is covered with a diamond pattern, or quilted look used on the leather seatbacks, side door inserts and dash front panel. It

Rough country dream machine loaded with goodies The redesigned 2011 Grand Cherokee was still unmistakably a Jeep, even though it came with an all-new chassis and body. This rough country dream machine (from 2011 to 2013) was offered with an impressively wide range of basic hardware choices that included three 4x4 systems, an optional Quadra-Lift air suspension system and two engines. Its standard engine is a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and other than some early production line glitches, (see recalls) the 2011-3013 Jeep grand Cherokee is a pretty reliable, fuel efficient modern unit. A big improvement on the previous 3.7 V6, the 3.6 V6 features 24-valves and variable valve timing and can produce 290 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. And fuel economy is rated at: 13.0/8.9 L/100 km (city/ highway). That’s considerably better than the optional 5.7-litre V8 hemi engine, which is rated at 15.7 L/100 km in the city and 10.6 L/100 km on the highway. The pulling power (390 lb-ft of

Lifesaving cold weather fun on four wheels The man from BMW once called me a hooker. Surprisingly, I wasn’t that offended. I actually laughed at such a descriptor, as did everyone else around me. I didn’t feel so bad because I wasn’t the only one in the group labelled thusly at the brand’s Driver Training; a full day of driving 3 Series sedans (back then) to improve our own car control. I didn’t have too many years of driving experience back then but

I unfortunately I had picked up a few bad habits on the road. What’s a ‘hooker’, according to the instructors at the German automaker’s training? Someone who hooks his or her hand into the steering wheel when making a turn. It’s a big boo-boo and not an effective way to drive. It’s also totally unsafe should an accident occur in the process. Needless to say, pointing out the ‘hooker’ in me caused me to change my habits

for the better. And in the most recent installment of learning car control with BMW, no such noun was used when relating to my technique. Thank goodness. It’s minus 15 degrees at the ICAR track in Mirabel, Quebec. The sun is out and there’s a lineup of all-new 435i coupes just begging to be driven. Some are equipped with the brand’s all-wheel drive system. Some are rear-wheel drive.

Putting yourself and the 435i through the paces in a safe and controlled environment is the best place to learn. If you spin out, you’re not going to go into oncoming traffic. You just stop, turn the car around, and keep going. You’ll probably giggle a little in the process and tell yourself you’ll “get it next time.” Heck, if you knock over a few cones, no one will judge you either. It’s all part of the process. There are also dynamic braking exercises that teach you how the car reacts when you have ABS, and what you can do in these conditions. You’ll even learn reverse 180s. Philippe Létourneau is the head instructor of the program and says, “People learn a lot more when they’re having fun.” I agree. He also mentions that if people walk away from the course with a couple of newly established driving habits that make them overall a safe driver, that’s ideal. However, if your face doesn’t feel stiff from smiling, or your abs don’t hurt from laughing, perhaps you weren’t trying hard enough. What’s not to like about that? Gone in a flash Five Where the rubquickest automotive failures ber hits the road ‘‘

’’

Hundred-year anniversaries in the automotive world are nearly as common as new reality TV shows (General Motors, Aston Martin and Alfa Romeo all turned 100 recently). The car companies on this list weren’t as fortunate. •Davis (1947-48): The Davis Car Company was founded in 1947 in Van Nuys, Calif., by entrepreneur Gary Davis, who for reasons best known to himself decided that America was ready for a tiny three-wheeled car with just 47 hp. Like the next car company on the list, Davis also took advantage of a surplus WW2 defense plant as his base of operations. With the fast-developing freeway culture in Southern California (the car’s introduction coincided with the adoption of a comprehensive freeway plan for the region), there was little demand for an underpowered three-wheeler wholly unsuited for freeway use.

The company collapsed in 1948 under the weight of unpaid employees and suppliers. The founder was jailed for fraud. •Tucker (1948): The Tucker story is probably the least comical of the bunch. Preston Tucker conceived a car with some truly innovative safety and performance features. Its merits were considerable and it deserved to succeed. Sadly, it wasn’t to be. Negative publicity — and, many say, a conspiracy among the legacy automakers — coupled with an SEC investigation put a quick end to Tucker. About 50 cars were built in an ex-defense plant in Chicago before Tucker folded in early 1949, and 1948 was the only model year for the car known as the Tucker 48. The entire sad saga was chronicled in the 1988 Francis Ford Coppola film “Tucker: A Man and His Dreams.” Today, most of the cars survive as cherished museum pieces and in private collections. Tuckers have brought as much as $2 million at classic car auctions. •Bricklin (1974-76): Malcolm Bricklin just can’t stay out of the automotive industry. An early investor in Subaru of North America, he sold his stake to finance his dream — a “safety” sports car bearing his name. Sports cars and safety have never gone hand in hand, and some would even argue that an element of danger is part of their raffish charm. Not surprisingly, there was little demand for a “safe” sports car offered in colors like Safety Orange,

Drives-U-Crazy Snow way to drive The recent snowstorms have brought out the best and the worst in B.C. drivers. I would be a millionaire if I had a dollar for every person I’ve watched over-rev a car in a futile bid to escape the combined clutches of snow and ice. If your car is not shod for the winter weather, then stay home or take a cab. Otherwise, take off slowly in a higher gear than you would in dry weather. You will stand a lot more chance of gaining traction and less reliant on those good people who dig you out! What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Safety Green, Safety White and Safety Suntan (an odd, fleshy beige color). Safety Red was the only conventional color. Bricklins were built by a largely inexperienced workforce in New Brunswick, Canada, from 1974-76. Poor quality control — the gullwing doors were famous for trapping occupants inside — and low demand sunk Bricklin, leaving the Canadian government to foot the bills. Little was learned from the debacle. (See: DeLorean.) Bricklin went on to bring to America the much-reviled Yugo. •DeLorean (1981-83): Ex-GM superstar John Z. DeLorean stole a page from the Bricklin playbook. Just five years later, he convinced another gullible government (this time, the UK Labour Party) to build a factory in another high unemployment area (troubled Belfast, Northern Ireland) to construct another gullwing-door sports car named after its founder. Its styling, the work of the great Giorgetto Giugiaro of famed Ital Design, was a far more professional job than the

Bricklin, and the DeLorean DMC-12 had a number of striking features, including its high-end appliance-like stainless steel body panels and unique doors. Sadly, the Renault-Peugeot-Volvo V6 left the car woefully underpowered and at a price point that put it into competition with faster and more established cars. The whole enterprise sank under debts guaranteed by the British government. •ATS (1962-63): To say that Enzo Ferrari was imperious would be akin to calling Steve Jobs “somewhat clever.” When Ferrari’s wife began to meddle in his company, a number of key staffers could stand it no more and called it quits in what became known as “The Ferrari Mutiny.” They immediately started a new Italian sports car company known as ATS, the one and only product being the advanced and beautiful 2500 Coupe. Although ATS avoided the jinx of being named for the founder, the company still quickly foundered. The few surviving 2500 Coupes are worth about $1 million each.

Pic of the Week Futuristic Kia with butterfly wings The Kia Niro concept is a futuristic, upscale and performance-inspired hybrid electric drive car designed for urban dwellers. Entry into the vehicle is by way of dihedral “butterfly” doors with flush door handles that swing up high into the roof. Mounted directly onto the side windows are milled “Plexiglas®1” door mirrors with built-in cameras. And at the rear, the large hatch opens to reveal an expansive carbon-fibre-clad cargo deck ready to swallow large quantities of equipment, gadgets, gear or luggage. This concept comes with a variant of Kia’s turbocharged 1.6-liter ‘Gamma’ engine, capable of 160 horsepower. The engine and a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission serve the front wheels while an electric hybrid system powered by regenerative braking delivers up to 45 horsepower to the rear wheels – when road conditions require extra grip. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
