Marijuana job fair attracts hundreds of applicants By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
If potential employees had experience with marijuana, then last weekend’s job fair at Tilray was their chance to brag about it. Tilray, the company behind the new medical marijuana facility at Duke Point, hosted its first hiring fair over the weekend, attracting more than 400 resumés and 250 interviewees. Philippe Lucas, vice-president of patient research and services for Tilray, said the company was “very impressed” with the number and quality of people who turned out and has little doubt it will hire from the
pool of candidates. There could also be more hiring efforts in the near future once the company knows where employee gaps still exist. “It was very successful for us,” Lucas said. “I think [it was a] combination of a great opportunity to get involved in an emerging company and new industry ... and I think part of it is the interest and attraction of working in a legal setting with medical marijuana.” Lucas said most people were very professional and well-prepared. Many seemed to enjoy talking about their experience with marijuana and medical mari-
juana, which is isn’t something people usually bring up in a job interview, he said, adding that “it’s a novel experience – here you get to brag about it.” The company was searching for up to 60 employees to fill jobs ranging from management to cultivation and horticulture. Tilray will be contacting people as early as this week, with aims of getting new employees trained before its launch April 1. The company is still wrapping up its first phase of renovations and is in the process of securing a licence from Health Canada to grow, process and distribute medical marijuana to patients across the country. news@nanaimobulletin.com
RECRUITMENT
Expenses tied into the century-old Colliery dams now top $1.6 million, according to the City of Nanaimo. Nanaimo officials say $1.6 million has been spent on the Colliery dams since 2012, including close to half a million dollars for work commissioned through a new technical committee. The most recent costs – estimated at $470,000 – come from engineering firm Golder Associates, which was hired by a technical committee of city representatives and special interest groups to research remediation options. City staff members had originally pegged the work to cost between $100,000 and $400,000, but it was only a rough estimate, according to Tom Hickey, the city’s general manager of community services, who said they hadn’t previously known the scope of work. Expenses are still within more than $2 million set aside for mitigation work and isn’t expected to hit taxpayers in the pocketbook, but Mayor John Ruttan says he still expects criticism from the public. “I don’t think the taxpayer will be happy about it, but I don’t know we had an alterna-
tive,” he said, adding if there was support to get an early start on the dams, circumstance might have been different. As it stands, the project is like a taxi, he said – “the longer you ride, the more you pay.” “It’s just a really frustrating thing all the way around and very expensive thing all the way around, but finally we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Ruttan said. Multi-phased work on the dams kicked off in October, when Nanaimo city council unanimously agreed to launch a two-year process to address the risk posed by the middle and lower Colliery dams during a major quake or flood. The process focuses on remediation of concrete structures – an option council originally dismissed because of an estimated $17-million to $30.7-million price tag. The technical committee and Golder Associates have been charged with reviewing data and coming up with options for long-term repairs. Golder, which recently did core drilling work to test the state of the dams, is expected to present its findings around remediation this month. It is not known if the information will be made public. news@nanaimobulletin.com

School board letter supports teachers
I
truStEES coNcErNEd with appeal. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN
The Nanaimo school board voted to send a letter to
B.C. Minister of Education Peter Fassbender relating to the province’s negotiations with teachers. At its Feb. 26 regular meeting, the board approved a motion that will see chairwoman Dot Neary penning a let-
ter on the board’s behalf, asking the government to withdraw an appeal of a B.C. Supreme Court ruling related to class size and composition, the two items that were stripped from teachers’ contract in 2002. The board is also
asking that the province provide funding to cover the cost of re-implementation of class size and composition and bargain in good faith as it negotiates with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation on a new collective bargaining agreement, before the start of the next school year. The school district forecasted a shortfall of close to $6 million for the upcoming school year but it could decrease to $3 million with surplus and budget cutbacks. “I find it almost criminal, and I’ll put that in quotes, to use the monies on legal fees, lawyers, etc., when that money should be going to our students and to actually still go on with an appeal and just to get, in my opinion, off the hook,” said trustee Donna Allen, who proposed the motion. “This is the second time now that the government has been told, ‘Go in a different route.’” To have an appeal and to have it go on for another year was not right, she said.

City pushes sewer connection
I
GrEEN lakE homeowners given 2016 deadline to hook up.
By Tamara Cunningham the News BulletiN
Green Lake residents will have two years to hook into the municipal sewer system before Nanaimo officials crack down on ‘stragglers.’ Nanaimo city council opted to phase in fees and give Green Lake-area residents more time to connect to a new municipal sewer system, during an open meeting last week. The move will give 27 landowners until 2016 to hook into the sewer service before they are given warning notices. People will also see a gradual increase in connection costs instead of an immedi-
ate $1,800 charge, beginning in March. The city originally agreed to waive the $1,800 connection fee until Feb. 28. The move “defers the time when the city is going and [issuing 180-day] notices to connect and allows people a bit more time to find ways to connect both financially and technically,” said Poul Rosen, the city’s manager of engineering projects. “By the same token, it also increases the cost to people that have waited.” The City of Nanaimo agreed to install sewer services in the Green Lake area in 2011, almost four decades after amalgamation. There were concerns aging septic systems could be affecting the health of the lake. It is now mandatory for residents to join the system. As of this week, the city will
charge $600 for connection fees and put notes on property files that limit building permits and subdivisions. The charge will increase to $1,200 in 2015. So far the majority of landowners – 71 of the potential 98 – have joined the system or are in the process of hooking in. Some people have claimed making the connection will impose a financial hardship, while others say they already have a system that works and don’t plan on using the city system. There will be ‘stragglers,’ said Rosen, adding the city will eventually need to find a way to deal with them. The waiver program has cost the city approximately $130,000 in lost revenue, while $1.5 million has been spent on design and construction of the new system. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Council votes against cell tower proposal By Karl yu the News BulletiN
It’s not just residents who have trouble getting cell service on their phones along Hammond Bay Road – emergency services do not have the ability to communicate in the area. Nanaimo Fire Rescue chief Craig Richardson said better cellphone reception along Hammond Bay Road would be beneficial as cellular data issued is used for mobile computers on fire trucks. “We do lose connectivity for those in certain areas down there as well,” he said. “There are times when we don’t have that capacity to transmit data to the computers in the fire trucks, however between cellular phone and radio, we’ve been managing our communications, although it has been problematic for us.” He said emergency services use a communications infrastructure on Cottle Hill, adding that he hasn’t heard any reports of delays. While communication in the area used to be an issue for emer-
gency response too, radio upgrades have made things easier. “In terms of being able to communicate with emergency responders, we’ve done some improvements in there in the last year,” Richardson said. “We have a radio repeater (amplifies low-level signals) in the area that backfills some of the coverage on radio.” Nanaimo city council voted 8-1 against supporting a Telus cellphone tower proposal for the parking lot at Piper’s Pub last week, which would have remedied the gap in cellular phone coverage. The decision came much to the disappointment of Coun. Bill McKay, the lone councillor who was in favour. He said he wished more consideration had been given to people who get into trouble along the Hammond Bay route. “I was really disappointed that wasn’t taken into consideration,” McKay said. “I’d sure hate for anybody to be driving down the road in the middle of the night and go off the road because they’ll

never be able to reach anybody for help.” Mayor John Ruttan is also aware of the reception troubles and the potential safety concerns that come with it and said voting against the tower was a difficult decision. He said a tower is needed in the area but his primary concern was the proximity to a number of schools. “I can’t help but feel there are locations that are not near built-up areas, not near primary and daycare schools that will be desirable from a telecommunications standpoint and that can be built,” Ruttan said. Telus spokeswoman Liz Sauve said the company was disappointed with the decision but is still interested in working with the city in the future to improve wireless service in the area. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Exfoliation - what does it mean? - what benefits does it achieve? When reading articles on beauty, the word exfoliation will often appear. Exfoliation should ideally be done once or twice a week as part of your regular skincare regimen. If skin is regularly exfoliated, the creams you apply will penetrate better instead of laying on top of this layer of dead cells. The City of Nanaimo continues to fill vacancies as a wave of baby boomers announce their retirements. Baby boomers have been exiting the municipal workforce in high number for the last several years, according to the City of Nanaimo, from 15 in 2011 to 21 last year. Fifteen employees announced in the first two months of this year that they plan to retire in 2014, including 10 managers. The number represents 12 per cent of the city’s non-unionized workers. The drop in long-service and senior employees comes as no surprise to Terry Hartley, the city’s director of human resources and organizational planning, who says it’s just demographics – boomers across the private and public sectors are eligible to retire and making their exits. The City of Nanaimo has been preparing for the wave of retirements with strategies from encouraging people to share knowledge, to mentorship and named successors, but Hartley said there are still challenges ahead, including reorganization and recruitment. Eight of the 21 positions vacated in 2013 remain unfilled. “I wouldn’t say it’s overwhelming,” Hartley said. “It keeps us busy with recruitment and trying to get the right people for the job.” In the next five years, the municipality expects 30 per cent of permanent employees will be eligible to retire without pension penalties, including 48 per cent of management and non-unionized employees. This year, Nanaimo saw the retirements of fire chief Ron Lambert and Ian Blackwood, manager of parks maintenance and construction. Susan Clift, director of engineering and public works, announced her exit unexpectedly in December over personal reasons and left in January, according to Hartley. The position is now filled by acting director Bob Prokopenko, formerly the city’s senior manager of engineering. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Security at Nanaimo District Secondary School and the Nanaimo school district administration office on Wakesiah Avenue has been increased due to a possible threat. Security guards were outside the high school and the administration office Monday as the school district worked with Nanaimo RCMP to evaluate the situation on a day-to-day basis. According to district spokeswoman Donna Reimer, no direct threats were made to the high school or the administration building and threats were not made by a student. The move is precautionary, she said. No other schools will be affected.

With a fuel station to accompany a fleet of new compressed natural gas buses, the Regional District of Nanaimo maintenance garage could become a refuelling hub. The regional district board approved a licence of occupation agreement with B.C. Transit last October, which saw the construction of the station at the Hammond Bay Road facility at the cost of $2 million, and the potential exists for fuelling similar vehicles. Dennis Trudeau, regional district general manager of transportation and solid waste services, said buses and other compressed natural gas-fuelled vehicles could use the facility, something
echoed by B.C. Transit president and CEO Manuel Achadinha. “We’re looking at this as a fuelling station opportunity as the need for CNG in this community grows and this facility will be available to those other users,” Achadinha said. “For example, if other municipalities around the Regional District of Nanaimo, a lot of their public works vehicles, if they converted to CNG, we would look at an opportunity to use this as the fuelling station.” The station is expected to be operational sometime this week. Trudeau said the potential to fuel other fleets is good not only for transit but also for the community. “If there are other fleets, maybe the garbage trucks, some other type of long-haul buses, if they went to CNG, we’d be able to fuel them here as well,” said Trudeau. The regional district and B.C. Transit unveiled the new compressed natural gas buses on Friday and among

had to book arenas in Parksville and Duncan for practices, games and training camps. “It’s unfortunate that as a result of the allocation of the dry-arena space, roller derby in Nanaimo has not had the opportunity to grow as rapidly and consistently as other sports and has not had the opportunity to grow at the same rate as other municipalities,” said Darlene Stevens, Harbour City Rollers player. Richard Harding, the city’s director of parks, recreation and environment, said decisions regarding ice and dryfloor allocation were made in an effort to maximize the usage of the arenas. “Even though there’s some prime-time constraints for some groups, we can accommodate all the historical uses,” Harding said. “With budgets where they are, it was a more effective way of utilizing the facilities and a chance of keeping them full.” City councillor Fred Pattje pointed out that the city is grappling with a projected property-tax increase that he said isn’t sustainable. “The motion that I’m going to make is going to try and deal with 2014 and find some sort of solution that is going to help all of you,” he told the users. “But I really urge you to
be aware of the financial constraints … It’s not going to be easy and if it’s going to cost extra money, it’s going to be twice as hard.” Dr y-floor users argued that they weren’t offered the chance to pay for additional arena hours. “Constraints and cutbacks are a way of life now. However, what I’m struggling with is how is the cutback to giving more ice time reasonable here? That’s not a cutback,” said Darlene Brebber, a lacrosse director. Dubenski said dry-floor users don’t want to make the issue “a hockey versus a lacrosse proposition” and said it’s broader than that. “I’m suggesting that there is a demand in this community that’s not being met.” The city’s recreation committee will meet Wednesday (March 5) and decide on a recommendation that will then be brought back before the commission. “We’re going to have a lot of discussion amongst ourselves with staff and see if we can come to some solution that will hopefully make most of us happy…” said Coun. Ted Greves. “Maybe we shouldn’t have torn down the Civic Arena.” sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Availability of dry-floor space is drying up in Nanaimo, and that’s concerning to some sports teams. The City of Nanaimo’s parks and recreation department is being asked by user groups to reconsider a decision to go with two ice rinks and two dry floors at its arenas this spring and summer. In recent years, the city has gone with three dry floors and one ice surface. Trying to squeeze so much lacrosse onto two floors in 2014 is creating enough potential problems that 60 advocates of the sport packed a Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission meeting Wednesday at the city hall annex. “There was an anticipation and an expectation of three dry floors … not only for this year but for every year,” said Frank Dubenski, spokesman of the dry-floor users consortium. Some Nanaimo District Lacrosse Association teams will receive fewer than one practice time per week, said the club’s president, Brian Boas. Other lacrosse teams are being given later practice times. The senior B Timbermen, for example, have been allotted a 9:30-11 p.m. slot, a hardship for a dozen out-oftown players commuting from as far away as Victoria. Dubenski said the NDLA is the sixth-largest minor lacrosse association in B.C., but isn’t being given any flexibility to grow. “All that Nanaimo is doing is trying to keep the program running at the bare minimum,” he said. “In comparison to the rest of the province, ask yourselves if we compete, and I don’t think we do.” Roller derby groups are also constrained or shut out by the dry-floor allocation and have

Council terms are workable There is certainly some merit to extending the term of office for municipal councils, regional districts and school boards from three to four years. After all, there will be more time for elected officials to pursue their strategic visions. That could be important when you consider the first year of a new term currently is consumed by newcomers getting used to their duties and the third and final year is focused on the next election. That only leaves a brief period to do the people’s business. Four-year terms would allow for greater consistency, more actual governing to take place. A four-year term would also bring civic leaders into line with federal and provincial politicians who must be lobbied for all-important funding grants. However, longer terms could also have a significant downside. Particularly, people considering to run for office would be asked to give up another year of their lives. That could be challenging for mayors and councillors in small communities where the responsibilities are extensive but the compensation is more reflective of volunteerism. There’s already a challenge with getting younger people, including in their 40s and 50s, to run for office. But are they going to agree to four years when the salary doesn’t reflect the disruption to careers and families? And for those retirees who traditionally fill a lot of posts, will longer terms pull them away from heading south, spending time with grandkids or other activities? At a time when there is considerable public apathy about the electoral process, it’s difficult to know if these so-called reforms from the provincial government will help or send even more people heading for the hills. As always, it will be up to the electorate to mark our ballots thoughtfully and demand good governance for the entirety of council’s term. Really, that should have been our expectation all along. On Feb. 16 the Real Estate Foundation of B.C. released an open letter to Premier Christy Clark saying “without protection, farmland can be lost to irreversible uses during an era when British Columbians are becoming increasingly concerned about where their food comes from.” In my book, most of these threats come under the heading of insatiable demand, which will never stop until either a firm stand is taken in favour of protection of land for future food production or the whole resource has been laid waste. The greatest threat, and the one that speculators and profiteers rely on, is the phenomenon Jared Diamond calls “creeping normality,” whereby the general public becomes so accustomed to gradual destruction that we stop noticing the devastating impacts of our careless ways. u Marjorie Stewart is board chairwoman of the Nanaimo Foodshare Society. marjorieandalstewart@shaw.ca

Jobs plan was just hot air To the Editor,
Re: Editorial cartoon, Feb. 25. The cartoon was brilliant! There’s Christy Clark, sitting in the gondola of an aircraft balloon, with nothing but a toy balloon to raise her aloft, while she exults in the heady ride that is to come. The gondola is labelled ‘LNG.’ Two years ago, Clark unveiled her jobs plan when she promised the private sec-
tor would create thousands of new jobs. Reality check: the private sector actually lost 12,000 jobs in the first ten months of 2013. And have you noticed where many new jobs are located? In the North and in Alberta. A recent article reported the increased activity at Nanaimo airport with all the charters carrying our young men to Fort McMurray and Kitimat. What a life. Dad has to live the dreary life
in camps while mom has to manage the household and bring up the children alone, often along with a job of her own. Adrian Dix had a much better idea: Provide training for our young people so they will have more choices of where to work. A skilled workforce develops our most valuable resource, our people.

Government responsible for rift with teachers To the Editor,
Re: Time to end bloody B.C. school battle, Opinion, Feb. 6. What has caused this major rift between the teachers of B.C. and the Socred and Liberal governments? In my view the problem first arose in the election campaign in 1969 wherein the BCTF ran an ‘apple campaign.’ Little red apple stickers were handed out to members of the public if they supported education. The Socred government of the day was outraged at teachers taking part in the political process. It was the view of the government that teachers were civil servants and therefore were not to be involved in the political process. The Socred governments of the past and the current Liberal government do not want to negotiate class size and other terms and conditions with teachers. They want to dictate the terms of the relationship. This is illegal. The Supreme Court
ruled twice on this issue and said twice that the government is absolutely wrong and that terms illegally stripped from the contracts must be reinstated. The government should have known in 2002 when it introduced the legislation that it could be found to be illegal. To ask for a stay of the legislation or argue that it will cost too much money is a specious argument. They had no difficulty giving scores of millions of dollars in tax breaks to corporations early in 2002. No doubt the clawback from teacher contracts helped pay for that gift. It is time for the government to assume responsibility and act in the best interests of all citizens in B.C. and clean this mess up. At the end of the day the government has the power to control expenditures in the public sector through the budget process so no one is going to run away with the piggy bank. Nelson Allen Nanaimo

Sharing water may not be in Nanaimo’s best interests, says letter writer.
Water deal made hastily To the Editor,
Re: Nanaimo councillors approve water deal, Feb. 27. Once again, council moved precipitously on this significant issue despite the lack of either a clear business plan or a regional government framework. Staff’s report contained insufficient evidence to permit a rational business decision to be made on public policy. Due diligence was not available to anyone involved: another shameful rush to questionable judgment which leaves Nanaimo open to similar requests for water from other neighbouring water-poor areas while they and the province point to this agreement as a precedent. I am not against a shared water system. I just want to be crystal clear about what water, when, with whom, under what circumstances and at what cost. Water may be a human right, but there is a substantial difference of opinion about what this means in the real world. The interests of Lantzville and its developers were well-served last night by Nanaimo’s council. Whether Nanaimo’s interests were well-served remains to be seen.

Colliery dams safe during typical winter To the Editor,
There has been much confusion about emergency measures and the water levels at the Colliery dams this winter. Residents have raised safety concerns during very typical winter weather after learning that the city was close to implementing emergency measures on Jan. 11. The important thing to note is that it is only if the lower dam overtops that there is concern for dam failure and this would take a day or two to occur after overtopping begins. On Jan. 11 the water level that caused so much concern was 40 centimetres, which is 1.6 metres below the top of the dam. When water levels reach 0.6m emergency measures begin. The city begins monitoring the levels more closely and prepares for the next step. At 0.9m residents are called to prepare for possible evacuation. At 1.2m, sirens sound and people are evacuated. This is still 0.8m below the top of the dam. We were told that the highest water level recorded in the last 34 years was 0.9m, well below the dam crest. So I believe, with these facts in mind, our typical winter weather is very unlikely to cause overtopping of the dam this winter.

We are saddened to announce Jim’s death in Nanaimo, on February 24th, from Alzheimer’s. He was predeceased by his much loved wife, Joan in 2005. Jim will be missed by his daughters, Patricia Punnett (Victoria) and Janet Saunders (Nanaimo); sons-in-law, Jon Punnett and Bob Saunders; cherished grandchildren: Elizabeth Punnett, Hilary Punnett, James Saunders and Gareth Saunders; and greatgranddaughter, Amara Garcia. ALEXANDRIA MAILLOT performs at Dinghy Dock Pub. Independent Film Series at Avalon Cinema Sundays at 1, 4 & 7pm; Mondays at 7pm
BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN
March 9 - 10: WADJDA
S
inger/songwriter Alexandria Maillot remembered the day she met legendary songstress Jann Arden in 2006. “I was so worried,” Maillot recalled. “I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes. I was very intimidated.” Maillot was just barely a teenager but her musical talents had caught the eye of David Foster who invited her to perform at the opening of the Michael Lee Ching section of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. The Prince George native would be appearing at the televised event alongside Arden. “It was an overwhelming experience to suddenly work with all these people who are actually relevant in the music industry,” she said. At first Arden was very quiet with Maillot, but it didn’t last long. “We were in a car going to this area to record some stuff and she [Arden] hadn’t really said anything,” Maillot said. “Something happened and I can’t remember what she said but it was one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard in my life and it made me realize that she is a real person and I don’t have to worry about it ... she made me realize that you can be successful and people can respect you but it doesn’t need to affect your mind.” Maillot, who’s in her early 20s, has since gone on to be featured on Oprah Winfrey’s website and won a handful of contests including the Vancouver Island Exhibition Songbird contest and Victoria Idol. On Wednesday (March 5) Maillot will be performing at the Dinghy Dock Pub in Nanaimo. The self-described “swoon pop” artist is looking forward to the show. Maillot, a Peak Performance finalist, has been singing since she was seven years old. In 2012 she released her debut EP, Just Another Girl. She said that she just fell into a musical career path. “I started to write and I really enjoyed writing ... then just after a handful of performances and musical endeavours it just cemented my want to be able to do something in the arts,” Maillot said. “In the last year it’s really made more sense to me.”
Saudi Arabia’s first film by a female director, and one of the first features ever shot in the country, This deceptively simple story is about a determined 10-year-old girl who dreams of owning a bicycle, and is willing to do almost anything to obtain it. TICKETS $12 in advance & at the door

Music has always been central to Alexandria Maillot’s life. She performs at the Dinghy Dock Pub on Wednesday (March 5).
Maillot has lived throughout the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island and previously attended Mark Isfeld Secondary in Courtenay and Ballenas Secondary School in Parksville. She graduated high school at the age of 16 in order to focus on a music career. “My goal was to graduate so I could get out of high school and start focusing on things I wanted to be doing,” she said. “I was able to add a lot of courses into one semester and get out early. I had gone to four different high schools and I was home schooled for a few semesters. When I was in high school I graduated with a bunch of people I didn’t even know.” Maillot’s music was once featured on American Airlines inflight entertainment and one of her co-writes, Revolution, was featured on Swiss singer Stefanie Heinzmann’s debut album Masterplan, which was released by Universal Music, and went gold in Germany and Switzerland. “There was a time when I just applied for a bunch of different things,” she said. “It was really cool because one of my songs got picked up to be played on their in-flight enter-
tainment section, which had over 500,000 views.” In 2004 Maillot travelled to Bucharest, Romania where she performed at the Golden Star International Song Contest. “It was this children’s festival trying to get different nations together. So all these children from around the world were brought into the festival,” Maillot said. “It was an amazing experience and I really appreciate the opportunity to have done it.” Maillot, who also appeared alongside Amanda Seyfried in the 2011 film Red Riding Hood, currently interns at Music Heals Charitable Foundation, a non-profit charity that supports music therapy services in communities throughout the province. “That’s something I am really interested in,” she said. “Obviously music is something that I want to be doing for the rest of my life, but the fact that it can impact people in a way that helps them get better peaks my interest up. I am very excited about being involved in that and creating a bunch of shows so more people can learn about music therapy.” arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Thrift shop takes digital money

BITCoIN USEd for online purchases. By Chris Bush The News bulleTiN
A Nanaimo-area thrift store is the first in town to conduct business in bits and bytes with cryptocurrency. Brad Nelson, coowner of Treasure Island Thrift Shoppe, located in Village Square in Cedar, is taking Canadian money plus Bitcoin and Dogecoin at the virtual currencies’ going rates. The store started taking payments in virtual money, also known as cryptocurrency Wednesday, giving customers another payment option alongside cash, Visa, Mastercard and American Express. “I’ve been looking at cryptocurrency for a little while now and those are the two that I decided to go with simply because Bitcoin has an intrinsic value – people have understood its value,” Nelson said. “Of course, it’s value isn’t backed. based on supply and demand.” Virtual currency is money that can be used online to purchase products and services, similar to any other currency system. Cryptocurrency was introduced in 2009 and is becoming more widely accepted although it has had some controversy surrounding it, not because of the currency itself, but because it was quickly picked up as a way of financ-
ing illicit activity. In 2013 the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation shut down Silk Road, an online black market, and seized 144,000 bitcoins valued at the time at more than $28.5 million US. A bitcoin or dogecoin has a trading value relative to standard currency. One bitcoin is currently trading somewhere north of $290, but instead of being backed by a commodity, such as gold or oil, a crypto-
currency’s value is based on demand for the currency itself. Bitcoins are broken down into fractions to represent smaller denominations. One millibitcoin, for example, equals 1/1,000th of a bitcoin. Dogecoins, while gaining in popularity, are currently trading at the much lower value of about 12 cents. Countries like Canada and the U.S. are considered bitcoinfriendly markets. u See ‘BITCOIN’ /25

Bitcoin payments use smartphone technology
Black Press readers win
u From /24 Vancouver recently had its first bitcoin ATM machine installed in which cash can be withdrawn based on bitcoin accounts. Large companies that accept bitcoins include Overstock.com, TigerDirect and Zynga. The University of Nicosia in Cyprus is the first accredited school to accept bitcoins for tuition payments. “There was a bitcoin crash not too long ago and, I don’t remember the name of the company right now, but there was a tech company that picked up a whole bunch of bitcoin and that shot the value back up again,” Nelson said. Even though most of their customers don’t buy products from the store online, there are potential customers as far off as Scotland and Chicago, Ill., who expressed interest in buying products online using cryptocurrency. The added payment method could spark more sales and interest in the store, which has expanded to include home and office furniture and other products.

Victor Addison of Gabriola Island was one of five Vancouver Island readers who were each rewarded by Black Press with $1,000 cash prizes for their help in taking part in the company’s Pulse Research online survey. Having spent some time completing a confidential questionnaire about their consumer habits and interests, the readers were entered into the draw along with thousands of other readers. Black Press thanks everyone who took part in the survey, which helps us better understand our valued readers and helps Nanaimo businesses craft new and effective ways to serve their clients and customers.
There is nothing illegal about trading in a virtual currencies, Nelson said. He simply converts the currency to Canadian cash and pays taxes on the converted value. Nelson said he believes he is the only company in Nanaimo to trade in cryptocurrency although several companies in Victoria, Parksville and Port Alberni trade in it as well. Cr yptocurrency payments are processed using smartphone technology by scanning quick response codes and then the user types in the purchase amount, which is transferred almost instantly to the merchant’s account. The process is otherwise similar to a regular debit or credit card transaction. “The only difference is rather than ringing the cash through the till or my card reader, I’ll be ringing it through on the smartphone and then ringing the transaction through the till,” Nelson said. BCHL TEAM will play Powell River in first round.
GAME 1 Nanaimo Clippers vs. Powell River Kings. Tuesday (March 4) at Powell River’s Hap Parker Arena, 7 p.m.
BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
The Nanaimo Clippers made one mistake at the wrong time and lost to the Powell River Kings. Now the two B.C. Hockey League opponents are switching to playoff mode, and although mistakes will be magnified, the Clippers are confident they can clean up their game at the right time. The best-of-seven series between the Clips and Kings begins tonight (March 4) in Powell River. The combatants will be quite familiar with one another after playing a close-checking contest Friday at Frank Crane Arena, a 3-2 Kings victory. The game looked to be heading for overtime until Powell River pounced on a giveaway and scored in the last minute of the third period. “It was kind of a look ahead at what playoff games are going to be like,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. “Tight, hardfought, close battles throughout the game.” Sheldon Rempal scored both goals for Nanaimo and the Clips used both their goalies, Tanner

Kovacs and then Jayson Argue, as they tried to set up their roster the way they wanted for playoffs. The Kings, on the other hand, needed every point as they tried for an Island Division title that they ended up just missing. So the Kings (36-16-2-4) draw the Clippers (27-281-2) in Round 1. “We’ve been with them all year, really,” said
Rempal. “I think we play kind of a similar game to them and it’s kind of a hard-working [style] that’s going to win you the games. I think we can definitely compete with them.” Powell River won six of the eight meetings with Nanaimo in the regular season, but five of the games were decided by one goal. “I think we’ll relish the
role of being an underdog in the first round and play with a lot of spirit and passion,” Vandekamp said. “[We’ll] just go do the best that we can and we believe that we can make some noise in the playoffs this year.” The Kings are led offensively by Jarid Lukosevicius, who scored 59 points, and Drew Dorantes, who scored 29 goals.
The Clips’ leading scorer in 2013-14 was Brendan Taylor, who scored 23 goals and 55 points. “You need your top players to be top players. That’s a lot of pressure but that’s something that comes with being a first- or second-line guy,” Vandekamp said. “But the playoffs bring strange and unpredictable heroes sometimes and I’ve seen that with my own eyes many, many times.” ICE CHIPS … For playoff ticket information, please call 250-751-0593 or visit www.nanaimo clippers.com. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
Buccaneers bounced out of junior B hockey playoffs The Nanaimo Buccaneers weren’t able to pull off a playoff upset. The Bucs were eliminated from the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League post-season on Friday, losing 3-0 to the Campbell River Storm up Island to drop their first-round series four games to two. Nanaimo didn’t fizzle out without a fight, as Game 6 saw some back-and-forth hockey as both teams finished with 40 shots on goal. Ryan Waldhaus made 37 saves for the Bucs but the Storm got power-play goals in the first and second periods to build a lead. The Bucs had pushed the series
to six games with a 4-2 win the night before at the Nanaimo Ice Centre in which Johnathan Speer, Garrett Dunlop, Jake Calverley and Thor Rosback scored goals and Waldhaus earned the win. “Winning and losing … you can learn lots from both, but it’s not who you are,” said Brad Knight, Bucs coach. “Who you are is how hard you work. The rest of it you can’t control.” ICE CHIPS … Under the VIJHL’s crossover playoff format, Campbell River will play the Victoria Cougars in one semifinal series and the other semi has the Comox Valley Glacier Kings playing the Peninsula Panthers. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

VIU teams earn silver, bronze Neither of Vancouver Island University’s basketball teams get to go to nationals, but both ended their seasons with podium finishes. The VIU Mariners men’s team placed second and the women’s team came third at the Pacific Western Athletic Association championships on the Lower Mainland this past weekend. The M’s men lost 90-84 to the favoured Langara Falcons in Saturday’s final. Brandon Jones scored 32 points and had 13 rebounds for the VIU men. The M’s women beat the Camosun Chargers 51-43 in the bronze-medal game with Jocelyn Jones and Heather McCarthy scoring 12 points apiece. VIU’s ladies had been upset 50-47 in overtime by the host Douglas Royals the day before.
Wildcats, Isles both advance Two more local high school basketball teams are through to the big dance. The Wellington Wildcats and Nanaimo District Islanders finished second and third, respectively, at senior AAA boys’ Island championships and advance to provincials. The tournament was held this past weekend at the Wellington Secondary School gym and the host ’Cats made it to the title game, which they dropped 57-39 to the Isfeld Ice on Saturday night.
