Salmon chefs wanted
For those dreaming of summer fun already, the Fort St. James National Historic Site is offering an idea. The historic site is looking for teams for their annual New Caledonia Salmon cook-off. Teams are given salmon and they can prepare it any way they like over a fire at the historic site on July 19, 2014. The competition was won last year by the Nak’azdli team Nu Yiz Nabobs. Help for Ukraine
The honourary consul for Ukraine in B.C., Mir Huculak, is publicizing opportunities for British Columbians to help the families of shooting victims in Kyiv, Ukraine, and those who were injured in anti-government protests. Between 75 and 100 people died in the upheaval, which led to President Viktor Yanukovych fleeing Kyiv on Friday, and a plan for new elections in May. Walk on ... in The Fort St. James Medical Clinic has begun to take walk-in clients on a trial basis and pre-book appointments
Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier The Fort St. James Medical Clinic is currently taking walk-ins on a trial basis. A massive step forward for the clinic, allowing walk-in patients is aimed at addressing acute illnesses, but was simply not possible for the past couple of years due to the physician shortage. For a year the community struggled under the care of one lone physician, Dr. Stent, who had to do what he could to provide some health care to the entire area. Once more physicians were recruited to the community, there was an immense backlog of chronic illness patients which were being dealt with and this then prevented those who had
acute problems such as a flu-related illness to be seen much of the time. But at the beginning of February, the clinic was finally caught up enough with the backlog to begin shifting the physician schedule to accommodate walk-ins and opening up to book appointments, which previously was done via 9 a.m. call-ins during which the clinic was booked everyday within minutes of opening. The three-month trial has been going well so far, according to Kathy Marchal, who manages the clinic. The clinic is so far able to see on average 26-30 walk-in patients a day, and normally Marchal said all the walk-in patients are able to get in by the end of the day on most days. It is a first-come,
first-serve walk-in, and clients write down their names on a list when they arrive, and they are seen in the order on the list, but the patients must be in the clinic when their name is called. With five physicians in the community now, and one nurse practitioner working out of the Nak’azdli Health Centre, the situation has improved significantly since Dr. Stent was the only physician left in Fort St. James, but there are still issues, said Marchal. Due to the population and the amount of chronic disease patients in the area, as soon as the appointment books were opened up to prebook spots, all the available spots until the end of April were filled within two weeks. Now, patients who
need follow-up appointments can not book an appointment with their own physician until May. If they use the walk-in, the patient may not get their own doctor, which is not ideal for follow-up and chronic disease care. “It’s exactly what we predicted would happen,” said Marchal about the bookings. While the system will be re-evaluated after the three-month trial period is up Marchal said so far the walk-in is working well, and she can’t see it going away, but changes may have to be made to continue to address the high number of chronic problems in the population with only five physicians. “We need six physicians,” she said. “That’s absolutely the bottom line.”
RCMP responded to a report of a student in possession of a possible handgun at Fort St. James Secondary School Monday, Feb. 24. At around 1:50 p.m., RCMP were informed by the school administration a student reported he or she had seen another student at the school in possession of a handgun. “The RCMP were immediately contacted and were on the scene within minutes,” said a statement from school administration going out to parents after the incident. Police on duty at the time were immediately sent to create a perimeter around the school, but they quickly learned the weapon involved was not a firearm. The realisticlooking pellet gun was believed to have been passed around by a small group of friends. RCMP then located the pellet gun and seized it. Once it was determined no criminal charges were warranted in the case, it was determined the school would deal with the students involved internally. School District 91 Director of Instruction Manu Madhok said the disciplinary process began immediately and will continue on in partnership with the RCMP and will be both educational and disciplinary. The replica hand gun is expected to be destroyed by police. While the school district does have policies around illegal weapons and firearms at schools, there is not a policy addressing these types of guns, as pellet guns or airsoft guns are not controlled weapons. Madhok said the school district will probably need to go back and look at possibly developing a specific policy around these types of guns, as they are becoming more common. RCMP said the modern pellet and airsoft guns are being made more and more realistic-looking, which can lead to problems and imitation weapons involved in any type of offence, such as uttering threats, carry serious criminal charges.

Keep your family safe - online Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier We live in the days of smartphones, web cams and social media. This much we know, but do you know how your family is using those technologies? In an effort to “encourage, educate and empower” parents and teens, the Fort St. James RCMP and the Fort St. James Senior Secondary School student council are collaborating on a free internet safety presentation. The event, aimed at helping establish an open relationship between parents and their children on internet use, will come complete with a free spaghetti dinner and door prizes.
Attendees could win a Samsung Galaxy tablet while they learn about internet safety. Parents will learn about how to protect their children online no matter what they access and how they can teach youth the basic rules of internet safety so they can use all of it responsibly. Youth will learn how to protect themselves and what they can do if something does happen. While the technology changes all the time and kids always find the newest applications, websites and gadgets, they need to be taught the tools to reduce their exposure to the potential risks of the different technologies, said Jhen Bridgeman, who is helping organize the event. Fort St. James RCMP report Feb. 22 at 11 p.m., RCMP pulled over a vehicle with a burnt out headlight near Highway 27 and Sowchea Road. They then discovered the vehicle had no valid insurance and the driver had no valid licence and was prohibited from driving. The vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days and the driver was issued tickets for driving without insurance, for not having a valid licence and having a non functioning headlight. The driver was also issued an appearance notice for court under the Motor Vehicle Act charge of driving while prohibited. Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. another incident took place involving a
prohibited driver. A member on patrol dealt with a vehicle at Fourth Avenue and Ash Street. The driver was also driving with no valid drivers licence and prohibited from driving under the Motor Vehicle Act. The driver was issued an appearance notice for court and the vehicle was impounded. Feb. 26 at approximately 2:30 p.m., RCMP were called to the downtown core to a report of an intoxicated male causing problems and disturbing businesses. The male suspect was located and arrested and was facing more than 10 counts of breaching a recognizance.

It’s not over yet, so make the most of winter Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier Well, here it is, just the beginning of March and I can not believe how many people have said to me lately “Enough already, I’m ready for summer.” Okay, those of us here for the last couple summers know what summer in Fort St. James can be like: a day at the beach. The sunshine, warm water, sandy beaches and such can make for a heady cocktail we can’t get enough of. But let’s not pretend it’s coming anytime soon. The biggest drawback to the climate here in my mind, is the lack of spring. It is a long, slow and cold season, the lake takes ages to thaw, the mud can be a bit of a challenge - not to mention the gravel on the roads - and then BAM, summer. Then it’s weeknights at the beach, weekends at the beach, anytime at the beach or on the lake. We get spoiled. But winter still will have a long hold on us, and while time does always slip by quickly, I suggest embracing the remnants of our long

winter, while the snow is good. The cross-country and downhill skiing are fantastic right about now, with the sun and blue sky making for some pretty lovely days outside, and it warms up to a reasonable temperature when the sun is out. Sadly, the ice will be out of the arena soon, but there is just enough time to take in one more skate or game, before it’s gone for another season. The weekend this paper goes to press will also be the start of the first annual Fort St. James Winterfest, which will include two weekends of Caledonia Classic Sled Dog racing, some ice sculpting, a sugar shack, a cross country event and speed skating regionals plus some evening entertainment. If there is one thing we can not control, it is the weather (climate change being something else entirely, we’re not exactly picking and choosing how it manifests itself). It’s not yet time to put away the skis and snowshoes, and it’s going to be awhile before the bathing suits get broken out and the lake opens up for the first brave soles, so we might as well enjoy it. Elliot fundraiser There was a fantastic turnout for the Chris Elliot fundraiser on Feb. 22. The spaghetti dinner and silent auction were held to help raise money to assist Chris Elliot whose home and all his belongings were destroyed in a house fire on Feb. 6. Elliot did not have insurance. Donations to help Elliot can be made to a trust set up at the Integris Credit Union. Household items can be dropped off at the Fort St. James RCMP detachment. Caledonia Courier
Coola did a fabulous job welcoming the team to the community. Fort St. James player Carmen Bennison was selected as a first team all-star, a group of five players who stood out through the tournament, selected by all the coaches. Hannah Burgart was chosen
as a second team all-star. There were over 100 players in the tournament, so Burck said it was “quite an honour” for Bennison and Burgart to be chosen. The team heads down to play in the provincials in Lumby in the Single ‘A’ group, seeded 13 out of 16 spots in the tournament.

The Fort St. James Snowmobile Club put on their annual Poker Ride on Feb. 22, a tradition more than 20 years old. The 64 km event drew over 200 snowmobilers to the day of
snow and sunshine, though it was a bit cold, it did warm up once the sun was out for awhile. The club sold 350 poker, hands, up from last year’s 310 hands sold. About one dozen
snowmobile club volunteers were helped out by the local dog sled group volunteers. One of the event organizers, volunteer Pam Tencarre reported participants said the trails were really great,
thanks to the volunteer groomers, headed up by Ed Hill. They also groomed the trails right after the event, so it would be in good shape for this weekend’s Caledonia Classic Sled Dog Races beginning on Feb. 28. The proceeds from the event go towards
helping to pay for some of the fuel costs involved in maintaining the extensive trail network, which this year required the removal of over 2,000 trees after some strong windstorms and given the amount of bug kill in the area. Northern Gateway has proposed tanker-related safety measures designed to maintain safe vessel transportation. These measures, together with lower tanker transit speeds in the coastal channels, not only reduce the risk of marine incidents, they also minimize potential adverse effects on the marine mammal environment. ACTING ON EXPERT ADVICE Northern Gateway has consulted with many of the top experts in Canada and the world, including Chris Anderson who, as a Master Mariner and seafarer, has over 50 years of experience including the development of port and terminal facilities in British Columbia’s coastal waters and internationally. Acting on the advice of a team of experts, Northern Gateway committed to a vessel transit speed range from 8 to 12 knots. Anderson says, “Reducing vessel transit speeds through a confined channel to within this range allows improved response from our escort tugs, substantially reducing the risk of a navigational incident, while maintaining safe vessel operation.”

According to Anderson, “In the event of a mechanical issue, the tethered escort tugs can take over steering and braking which greatly reduces the risk of an incident occurring. This commitment will also help protect British Columbia’s north coast.”

BC Winter Games athletes The local athletes who traveled to the BC WInter Games in Mission have gained some experience and some came home with medals. Speed skaters Emily Sulyma and Morgan Bennison both raced in the mixed relay and their team ended up with bronze after two teams were disqualified. Emily Sulyma skated a personal best time in the 500 m with 57.73 seconds, Jessica Sewell of Vanderhoof also skated a personal best time in the 500 m, clocking 1 min 2.72 sec. Morgan Bennison and Matthew Ebert of Vanderhoof both pushed themselves very hard to make the primary final, according to their coach
Alison Leach. "They both had multiple wipe outs but had great recoveries from getting back up on their feet very quickly and racing very well," said Leach in an email. Emily Prestmo of Vanderhoof also made a personal best time while she skated the 400 m in the Under 14 category, clocking in at 49.61 sec. Connor Ebert of Vanderhoof skated in the Under 14 males and also clocked a personal best in the 400 m of 47.7. The Under 16 relay team was Emily Sulyma, Morgon Bennison, Jessica Sewell and Matthew Ebert, the team bringing home the bronze
medal. "I thoroughly enjoyed attending the BC Winter Games with this group of skaters," said Leach. "They were a pleasure to work with and coach, they responded well to my coaching and were willing to listen and learn. "These guys once again gave me a positive experience at the games and I would be happy to coach again at the games." Leach said the support of both the Fort St. James and Vanderhoof communities was greatly appreciated by the skaters. "They made our community proud with the great attitude and their dedication to their sport to do their
best," she said. Their were a number of other local athletes who traveled to Mission to compete in their respective sports. Harry Goerz shot a compound bow in archery and came in seventh. Daniel Crook shot a recurve bow in archery and came in sixth. The Northwest Under 16 female hockey team had two Fort St. James players: Hannah Olinek and Sophie Davis. The team came in eighth place overall. The northwest wheelchair basketball team placed sixth, with four players from Fort St. James: David Goerz, Cole Taylor, Bryan Caldwell and Will Bennison.

Pink Shirt Day LEFT: Rocking pink on Pink Shirt Day. Students and staff at Fort St. James Secondary School were wearing some serious pink to support the anti-bullying campaign. Student Kiana Ferguson said she wears the shirt to represent standing up for others. "Be proud of yourself," she said. Student Morgan Prince said he wears the shirt because when he was younger, he himself was bullied and to show others: "I'm willing to stand up for the kids that can't stand up for themselves or aren't ready to," he said.
